Abstract [en]
There is a currently a lack of strategies for managing the preservation of genealogists’ archival material, but also a widespread agreement that it is an important part of our cultural heritage. Previous research on privatearchives, personal archives and genealogical research shows that genealogists’ material often is very broad, containing both the research, inherited items and newly created ones. It also showed that genealogical research has been greatly affected by digitization, which has both created new opportunities to access material, and an increased interest in the research. Today, there are a number of different digital platforms that genealogists use, but none that accepts all kinds of digital material. The aim of the essay was to find out how both genealogists and different types of archival institutions view this matter. To do this, I used a mixed method in the form of a survey aimed at genealogists and interviews with a few different types of archival institutions. The investigation showed that genealogists and archival institutions as of today are quite far apart. The limitations and appraisal of the archival institutions mean that the materials often need to be split up, which makes it difficult to determine itsprovenance. Furthermore, there is currently no possibility to get an overview of archived material and very little is available online. The genealogists instead use the digital platforms that exist, some of which function as community archives, but see several risks with them. Instead they wish for a Swedish digital archive service with built-in security control for their many different types of material. The theoretical framework was Terry Cook’s archival paradigms that suited the genealogist’s material well, with all paradigm phases being relevant for this material. The last phase, community, can probably be furtherexplored for the benefit of both archival institutions and genealogists.
