Abstract [en]

AI companions in video games have become increasingly prevalent, yet the impact of these companions' levels of autonomy on player experience remains underexplored. This study investigates how varying degrees of AI autonomy influence player experiences in a video game. A game artefact was designed that required cooperation between the player and an AI companion, featuring three AI companions withdifferent levels of autonomy. Participants played the game artefact and quantitative data was collected via a survey that gauged various aspects of their experience. Additionally, some participants were selected for semi-structured interviews to gather qualitative data. Statistical and thematic analyses were conducted to form a comprehensive understanding of AI companions. The results of the study suggest that the most effective AI companions are those that integrate high autonomy with a clear understanding of player goals and needs, while still offering the player a level of control.

Abstract [sv]

AI-kompanjoner i datorspel har blivit allt vanligare, men hur dessa AI-kompanjoners självständighetsnivå påverkar spelupplevelsen är inte utforskat i stor utsträckning .Den här studien undersöker hur olika grader av AI-kompanjoners självständighet påverkar spelarens upplevelser i ett datorspel. En spelartefakt utformades som kräver samarbete mellan spelaren och en AI-kompanjon. Spelet innehåller tre olika AI-kompanjoner med olika nivåer av självständighet. Alla deltagare spelade igenom artefakten, och därefter samlades kvantitativ data in via en enkät som olika aspekter av deras upplevelse. Vissa av deltagarna fick även delta i semi-strukturerade intervjuer där kvalitativ data om deras upplevelse samlades in. Både statistisk och tematisk analys genomfördes för att få en mer komplett förståelse om AI-kompanjoner. Studieresultaten tyder på att de mest effektiva AI-kompanjonerna är de som kombinerar en hög självständighetsnivå med en tydlig förståelse för spelarensmål och behov, samtidigt som de erbjuder spelaren en viss grad av kontroll.
