Abstract [en]

This project was conducted with the purpose of developing a glide system for height- adjustable desks capable of compensating for dimensional variations in the leg. The dimensional inaccuracies present in the current inner and outer tubes require each glide to be individually machined to achieve proper fit and functionality. This results in high production costs and a rejection rate of about 5%. To reduce scrap, a motion test is currently used to lower friction in the leg to acceptable levels, but this process is both time consuming and expensive.  The objective of the project was to develop a glide system that meets production requirements without the need for individual customization. The requirements include passing a friction test within the range of 5-30 kg, a stability test with a maximal lateral displacement of 1,2 mm under load. It also needs to be compatible with multiple leg variations and could withstand repeated up and down movements without loss of functionality.  Seven different concepts were developed and evaluated. After an initial elimination process, prototypes were designed and 3D printed in PETG and evaluated through friction and stability tests in two different telescopic desk legs. The results together with other product requirements were evaluated using a Pugh matrix to identify the concept that best fulfilled the project criteria.  The winning concept demonstrated a strong ability to compensate for the dimensional variations in both legs while remaining within the specified limits. The friction test measured a maximum force of 206 N and a minimum force of 52N, both within the approved range. The maximum measured lateral displacement during stability testing was 1,01 mm. The results therefore indicate that the developed glide system fulfills the defined requirements and has potential to reduce the need for individually machined glides.  For further development, additional studies regarding material selection are recommended, as well as the development of a more permanent mounting solution for the upper glide attachments.
