Från sökmotorer till stora språkmodeller: En kvalitativ studie om hur LLM-verktyg påverkar utvecklares användning av etablerade verktyg

From search engines to large language models : A qualitative study of how LLM tools influence developers use of established tools (engelsk)
Abstract [en]

Digital tools are central to today’s information seeking, communication, and development work. LLM tools have made several digital development processes more efficient, but high trust in these tools can affect how users process and evaluate information. This raised the question of how trust in LLM tools affects developers’ use of established tools for information seeking. Based on this, the study aimed to examine the underlying factors influencing developers’ experiences of using or avoiding LLM tools in programming. Furthermore, it was examined how the use of these tools has affected developers’ willingness and purpose to use established tools in their work environment. The study also examined how cognitive tolerance when using LLM tools can affect the development process. Data were collected through semistructured interviews, which were chosen to gather qualitative and in-depth data on user experiences within the software industry. The results show that LLM tools have significantly changed developers’ work methods. Code generation has become a central part of the work process where developers increasingly use LLM tools for more efficient programming, leading to a development process that places greater emphasis on manual code review. At the same time, established tools are still used for specific coding problems, source verification and the handling of confidential or business-critical information. Therefore, the study suggests that LLM tools not only affect the choice of tools but also redefines how efficiency and quality are perceived in modern development processes.
