Abstract [en]

Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) is often linked to a detail-focused perceptual style, yet evidence for a behavioural advantage in disembedding remains mixed. This study used the stimulus-controlled Leuven Embedded Figures Test (L-EFT) and a twin based design to examine behavioural and neural mechanisms of disembedding. Behaviourally, ASC and neurotypical (NT) twins showed comparable accuracy and reaction times, and IQ was the only consistent behavioural predictor of disembedding accuracy and speed. Neuroimaging analyses of ASC-discordant twin pairs revealed no significantly greater activation in the hypothesised literature-based region BA19 (occipital lobe) in twins with ASC compared to their NT co-twin, and no significantly greater activation in BA40 (parietal lobe) in NT twins compared to their co-twins with ASC. Overall, the findings do not support a behavioural advantage in ASC or neural differences between ASC and NT co-twins during disembedding.
