Cultural Engagement in a Vulnerable Area: The Rosengård Case Study.
2026 (engelsk)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to explore the cultural engagement in Rosengård, an area that has been depicted negatively throughout years in Swedish Media and public debate. I will focus on the space, specifically at south of Amiralsgatan, that comprehends Herrgården, Örtagården and Törnrosen. The common stereotypes about this location created an alienation between districts of the same city, emphasising the contrast and the social inequalities of residents living there.Firstly I have investigated what made this area to be defined as “segregated” and what are the social and political factors that need to be considered in the analysis.By applying the theories of Goffman and Wacquant, the concepts of stigma and segregation were defined. A deeper analysis of Bourdieu and his concept of Cultural capital and Social capital, with the association of Putnam’s theory and examples of Social capital and institutions, supported the research that was made on the cultural spaces that were identified. The qualitative research I have conducted through autoethnographic observations and semi-structured interviews provided an assessment of opinions, thoughts and shared expression of the spaces.
