Abstract [en]

This thesis presents the design and prototype evaluation of a 5.2--5.9~GHz frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar transceiver. The RF front-end was designed for implementation on Rogers RO4350B; however, due to budget constraints, only the microstrip patch-antenna array and the band-pass filter were fabricated on RO4350B, while the remaining boards were implemented on the JLC0210 and JLC04081H-7628 stackups. Keysight Advanced Design System (ADS) was used for circuit simulation, EM modelling, and layout optimisation of the complete RF chain. Key building blocks include a microstrip patch-antenna array, a Wilkinson power divider, a branch-line quadrature coupler, microstrip band-pass and low-pass filters, matching networks, and amplifier and mixer stages that downconvert the received signal to a 300~MHz intermediate frequency (IF). Selected boards were fabricated and characterised using a vector network analyser (VNA), and measured S-parameters were compared with simulations. Overall agreement is good, while observed frequency shifts and impedance deviations are attributed to PCB thickness and impedance tolerances, dielectric-constant variation, and the influence of connectors and DC-blocking components. The validated design workflow and PCB-level building blocks provide a practical foundation for integrating chirp generation and baseband processing, and for completing full system demonstrations of the FMCW radar.
