Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund Under adolescensen sker många förändringar såsom neurobiologiskt, fysiologiskt, psykologiskt och socialt. Dessa förändringar i kombination med en negativ miljö kan leda till psykisk ohälsa. Just denna ålderskategori har visat en ökning av psykisk ohälsa i Sverige de senaste åren.

Syfte Studiens syfte var att mäta och analysera eventuella könsskillnader utifrån svenska gymnasieelevers självskattade psykiska ohälsa operationaliserat i form av psykiskt lidande.

Metod Data samlades in med en enkät som innehöll, bland andra instrument, det validerade mätinstrumentet, the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI). BSI mäter självskattat psykiskt lidande. Deltagandet i studien var frivilligt och anonymt. Informationen samlades in från 281 svenska gymnasieelever. Med hjälp av identifierad deskriptiv statistik analyserades eventuella könsskillnader i psykiskt lidande med Mann Whitney-U test.

Resultat Ångestrelaterad problematik skattades högst hos svenska gymnasieelever. Både de manliga och kvinnliga gymnasieeleverna skattade domänen tvångstankar högst. Kvinnliga gymnasieelever angav signifikant mer psykiskt lidande i alla domäner av BSI i jämförelse med deras manliga klasskamrater. Den största könskillnaden uppmättes i domänerna ångest (p = <0,001, Eta2 = 0,24), social fobi (p = <0,001, Eta2 = 0,24) och social otrygghet (p = <0,001, Eta2 = 0,19) av BSI.

Konklusion Dem oftast förekommande psykiska symptomer är problem med minne och uppmärksamhet hos gymnasieelever. De kvinnliga gymnasieeleverna rapporterar markant mer psykiskt lidande. Vuxenvärlden i ungdomars vardagsliv har ett stort ansvar att ge stöd under denna sårbara utvecklingsperiod.

Abstract [en]

Background During adolescence young adult experiences neurobiological, physiological, psychological and social changes in their life. The combinations of these changes with a negative environment could cause mental illness. The past few years an increased level of psychological distress was measured in Swedish adolescents.

Aim The aim was to measure self-rated psychological distress level within a Swedish high school student sample, and identify gender specific differences in that.

Method Data was assessed by a survey which, beside other validated measures included the The Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) instrument. The BSI measures psychological distress. Participation was anonymous and voluntary. 281 Swedish high school students completed the inventory. Beside descriptive statistic and Mann Whitney-U test was used to analyse gender differences.

Results Anxiety related complains were the most frekvent in the Swedish high school student sample. Both the male and female students rated highest on the Obsessive Compulsiveness domain. Female high school students had significantly higher psychological distress, and scored higher in each domains of the BSI compared to their male classmates. The biggest gender differences were identified in the Anxiety (p = <0,001, Eta2 = 0,24), Phobic Anxiety (p = <0,001, Eta2 = 0,24) and Interpersonal Sensitivity (p = <0,001, Eta2 = 0,19) domains of BSI.

Conclusion The most frequent psychological distress symptoms are memory problems and problems with attention reported by the high school students. Female high school students experience higher level of the psychological distress. Adults in the adolescents' enviroment have a big responsibility to provide support during this vulnerable developmental period.
