This master's thesis is about how Polish as a first language affects one's pronunciation in Swedish. In the first chapter, reasons and goals for the choice of the essay topic, previous research in the field and other areas that may be relevant for this study are presented, including information about the contemporary Polish emigration to Sweden and teaching methods on the SFI courses (Swedish for immigrants). Previous research mentions, among other things, studies about the critical age for language learning, the influence of other factors on pronunciation, the attitudes of the environment towards the foreign accent in Swedish pronunciations, as well as the importance of different phonetic aspects for good pronunciation (the suprasegmental vs the segmental aspects) and how they should be included in pronunciation teaching. Chapter two concerns the general phonetic terms, choice of the phonetic script used in the essay, and the categorization of sounds and phonemes. In chapter three, the contrasts between Polish and Swedish phonetics that could be distinguished after the comparison of both systems are presented. The points of greatest importance for the study were phoneme composition, vowels, consonants, sound length, co-articulation of sounds, word accent and intonation in sentences. Chapter four describes the actual study that was done to investigate Poles' pronunciation in Swedish. There, among other things, the study's hypothesis, method, participants, results and conclusions are described. In the last chapter of the essay, a summary, suggestions for further research and a summary in Swedish and English are presented.

Denna magisteruppsats handlar om hur det svenska uttalet påverkas om man har polska som första språk. I första kapitlet presenteras bakgrunden till val av uppsatsämne och syftet med studien, tidigare forskning inom fältet samt andra områden som är relevanta för den aktuella studien, bland annat information om den nutida polska emigrationen till Sverige och undervisningsmetoder på SFI-kurserna (Svenska för invandrare). Bland tidigare forskning nämns bland annat studier om den kritiska åldern för språkinlärning, andra faktorers påverkan på uttalet, omgivningens attityder till främmandespråksbrytning i svenskt uttal samt om vikten av olika fonetiska aspekter för bra uttal (suprasegmentella vs segmentella aspekter) och huruvida dessa bör inkluderas i uttalsundervisningen. Kapitel två berör generella fonetiska termer, valet av fonetisk skrift som används i uppsatsen samt kategoriseringen av ljud och fonem. I kapitel tre presenteras de grundläggande kontrasterna mellan polsk och svensk fonetik. De kan urskiljas genom en jämförelse av de båda fonetiska systemen. De viktigaste bland dessa är: fonemsammanställning, vokaler, konsonanter, ljudlängd, koartikulering av ljud, ordaccent samt intonation i meningar.  I kapitel fyra presenteras den empiriska undersökningen av de deltagande polackernas svenska uttal. Där beskrivs bland annat studiens hypotes, metod, deltagare, resultat samt slutsatser. Uppsatsens sista kapitel består av en sammanställning av resultaten, förslag till vidare forskning samt en sammanfattning på svenska och på engelska.
