    Abstract [en]

    This special issue introduction explores the need to study information systems as symbolic action systems, defines broadly the research domain and related assumptions, notes the origins of this perspective, articulates its key lines of study, and discusses the state of the field in light of published research. The essay also positions the three papers of the special issue in the broader Information Systems (IS) discourse and notes their specific contribution in bridging so far unconnected streams of research and expanding research methods amenable to symbolic action research. This introductory essay furthermore observes some unique challenges in pulling together the special issue that invited the editors to combat against the tendency to approach communicative processes associated with information systems as primarily psychological processes. In closing we note several lines of inquiry that can strengthen future studies of symbolic action including better design theories, more flexible and open use of methods, and attentive use of rich traditions that inform symbolic action research in IS.

    Abstract [en]

    Business Intelligence (BI) system facilitates informed and timely decision making incompetitive business environment. However, decision making can turn out to be highlychallenging if information delivered by BI system does not meet certain level of quality.Organization can benefit from provided information if they are correct, comprehensive,current, and accessible. The organizational members who use BI application to make decisionare best informants to verify the quality of delivered information. Additionally,the implementers of BI system are the one who must be aware of delivering high qualityof information and can explain the reason of failures if any. It is critical to inquire bothimplementers and users. Therefore, the factors that can affect the quality of informationwere studied through comprehensive literature review. Low quality of information maymake customers/ suppliers’ relationship worse, shrink the efficiency of the business performance,decrease the level of trust on BI, and eventually cause to lose the competitivenessin market place. This thesis is intended at investigating fundamental dimensionsthat hinder effective utilization of information in BI system and realizing how these dimensionscan affect the quality and outcome of decisions. Study with an exploratorypurpose was designed and conducted at a chain retail stores in Iran to gather empiricaldata from both group of BI users and implementers through focus group interview. Theresult of investigation shows the main BI system utilized to facilitate customer/ supplierrelationship management and store operation management. Business areas and activitiesinfluenced by the quality of information include, inventory management, customer loyalty,competitiveness, and supplier management. The information quality issues are encounteredmainly due to technical failures, lack of competent system developers, changesin business environment, inappropriate documentation during the system developmentlifecycle, and logical error in programming and designing algorithms. The time, effort,and resources spent on exploring and resolving problems regarding to the quality of informationhad a great influence on efficiency and effectiveness. Documentation duringsystem development life cycle is emphasized as a crucial factor that necessitates furtherstudy in documentation subject. The preliminary findings signify the importance of study to consider information quality in BI practice.

    Abstract [en]

    In most of the current applications security is usually provided individually. This means that various applications use their own security mechanisms and services, applied only to their own resources and functions. Furthermore, procedures to configure security parameters are usually inconvenient and complicated for non-technical users. As an alternative to this approach, we have designed and implemented Secure Workstation, which represents an integrated security environment and protects local IT resources, messages and operations across multiple applications. It comprises five components, i.e. four most commonly used PC applications: Secure Station Manager (equivalent to Windows Explorer), Secure E-Mail Client, Secure Documents System, and Secure Browser. These four components for their security extensions use functions and credentials of the fifth component, Generic Security Provider [5]. With this approach, we provide standard security services (authentication, confidentiality, and integrity and access control) and also additional, extended security services, such as transparent handling of certificates, use of smart cards, strong authentication protocol, SAML based single-singe-on, secure sessions, and other security functions, to all PC applications with the same set of security modules and parameters.

    Digitalization has increased over the past decade and changed our ways of solving problems. Studies have shown that digitalization has made a dramatic change in our lives and it's a huge challenge for government, organization, company and citizens. In about 15 years half of today's job will be disappears and will be replaced by digitalization, automatization and robotization. The purpose of the study is to describe and create an understanding of the new digital service that has been implemented in restaurant businesses, a new way of interaction between customers and company. A literature study has been made to give a fair picture of the theory and interviews with the purpose to gathering new information on how the digital restaurant works and get the knowledge of efficiency in business. Qualitative material has been analyzed and compared to theories from the literature study. The results of the study showed that there is immense difference between the employees view and company view of digital service in restaurant.

    Abstract [en]

    The use of medical images has been continuously increasing, which makes manual investigations of every image a difficult task. This study focuses on classifying brain magnetic resonance images (MRIs) as normal, where a brain tumor is absent, or as abnormal, where a brain tumor is present. A hybrid intelligent system for automatic brain tumor detection and MRI classification is proposed. This system assists radiologists in interpreting the MRIs, improves the brain tumor diagnostic accuracy, and directs the focus toward the abnormal images only. The proposed computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system consists of five steps: MRI preprocessing to remove the background noise, image segmentation by combining Otsu binarization and K-means clustering, feature extraction using the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) approach, and dimensionality reduction of the features by applying the principal component analysis (PCA) method. The major features were submitted to a kernel support vector machine (KSVM) for performing the MRI classification. The performance evaluation of the proposed system measured a maximum classification accuracy of 100 % using an available MRIs database. The processing time for all processes was recorded as 1.23 seconds. The obtained results have demonstrated the superiority of the proposed system.

    Abstract [en]

    Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have become very important for the medical diagnosis of brain tumors. The systems improve the diagnostic accuracy and reduce the required time. In this paper, a two-stage CAD system has been developed for automatic detection and classification of brain tumor through magnetic resonance images (MRIs). In the first stage, the system classifies brain tumor MRI into normal and abnormal images. In the second stage, the type of tumor is classified as benign (Noncancerous) or malignant (Cancerous) from the abnormal MRIs. The proposed CAD ensembles the following computational methods: MRI image segmentation by K-means clustering, feature extraction using discrete wavelet transform (DWT), feature reduction by applying principal component analysis (PCA). The two-stage classification has been conducted using a support vector machine (SVM). Performance evaluation of the proposed CAD has achieved promising results using a non-standard MRIs database.

    As information technology (IT)  becomes an integral part of society, public sector organizations have witnessed an increasing shift in how they deliver services to citizens. One area of IT that has  contributed to this transformation in service delivery has been in the domain of cloud computing. Extant research  has focused on the  factors related to the  adoption of cloud computing within public sector organizations, however, little is known about how cloud computing creates value in public sector administration. Addressing this, we conduct a case study research on the Moldova central public administration to investigate how cloud computing enhances value in public service delivery. Accordingly, we identify seven ways cloud computing enhances value creation in public administration. Among those values, faster service delivery, transparency and accountability are values rarely highlighted in the previous academic research. Based on our results, we propose solutions that public administration should take into consideration when utilizing cloud computing as a service delivery model.

    Det saknades teori kring vilka aspekter som var viktiga för potentiella kunder att väga in i ett beslut om övergång till molnbaserade affärssystem. I undersökningen har vi samlat tidigare forskning kring molntjänster generellt och sedan jämfört den med empiri från respondenter med erfarenhet av molnbaserade affärssystem. På så sätt har vi försökt koppla tidigare forskning och undersökt huruvida den är applicerbar på vår studie. Vi kom fram till att det framförallt är aspekter rörande säkerhet, ekonomi och affärsstrategi som kunder bör vara medvetna om när de planerar en övergång till molnbaserade affärssystem. Rörande säkerhet fann vi att det är viktigt att tänka på hur den fysiska lagringen sker och säkerhetsrutiner kring vem som handhar data och hur den säkerhetskopieras samt vem som äger datan. Ekonomiskt kan beslutet om en övergång påverkas av molntjänsters olika prismodeller, hur kostnader skiljer sig mot lokalt installerade system samt potentiellt dolda kostnader. Slutligen kan det affärsstrategiskt finnas avgörande aspekter i hur system interagerar med varandra, hur anpassad en tjänst är till mobila enheter samt att molntjänster enkelt kan skalas upp i storlek vid behov.

    Nowadays companies and organizations are implementing IT-systems that enable surveillances, particularly within the transport business. The implementation within the surveillances systems enables a better security and a more efficient workflow. The systems make it possible for companies to see fuel consumption, the position off the truck and also to plan the most efficient routes. The truck drivers have learned to accept that they are being watched through the companies surveillance systems just because it leads to a more efficient route-planning. The drivers understand why they’re being monitored and they feel safe. Since IT-systems came into the transport business drivers are able to see the fuel consumption and by seeing that they can drive more ecological and save money for their company. The truck driver that works in Bohuslän is well aware that these services are crucial for the companies, by having these systems the companies can compete with the foreign hauliers that takes the same job for a much smaller fee. But where is the limit for acceptable surveillance? We answered the issue by doing interviews in two rounds, first with ten truck drivers then with six. We also did a literature study. The drivers where all driving for companies in Bohuslän. The drivers we interviewed had different experience within the business, some drivers worked at big companies and some drivers worked at smaller companies. By sorting the drivers out we were able to sort out our answers and see if there were a difference in the way the drivers were thinking. We wanted to get knowledge of how different business surveilled their employees and how the employees reacted. So we performed a literature study where we read different case studies from the home care, the sales industry and the elementary school. We compared the result from our study with the result from our interviews. We managed to see that truck drivers generally had more loyal thoughts to their company. The drivers that were interviewed where well aware of the hard competition within the industry. As long as surveillance makes the company more efficient and the surveillance don’t violate their private integrity it´s okay to use it.Keywords: Surveillance, loyal workers, IT-system, competition

    IT-projekt har ofta ett bakomliggande syfte att bidra med ökad affärsnytta, ökad flexibilitet, effektivare arbetssätt, eller ökad kundnöjdhet. Uppföljning av affärsnytta förpassas ofta till förmån för klassiskt definierade framgångsparametrar inom projektledning, tid, budget och resultat. Mycket fokus hamnar på tekniska aspekter kring införande av system och affärsnyttan glöms bort. Vissa anledningar till att uppföljning av affärsnytta bortprioriteras anses vara att det är för svårt, råder oklarhet kring ansvar, och att affärsnyttor är av övervägande ogreppbar karaktär. Affärsnyttorna berör ofta flera olika verksamhetsområden vilket medför svårigheter gällande identifikation och hög kostnad för att involvera berörda resurser. IT-projekt initieras däremot grundat på explicita greppbara värden med tillhörande kostnadskalkyl som visar hur verksamheten kommer få igen investerat kapital. När affärsnytta inte är explicit uttryckt, utan har en ogreppbar karaktär leder det till låg prioritet, då kunskap kring mätning och styrning saknas. IT-projekt innebär en stor investering i tid, pengar, personal och den förväntade affärsnyttan har stor genomslagskraft. Uppfyllelse av affärsnytta kan påverka hela företagets lönsamhet. Teorier gällande Benefits Management Process (BMP) utgör basen för denvetenskapliga plattformen och har kompletterats medrelevant forskning vid behov.

    Syftet med undersökning är att se vilka aktiviteter som behöver föregå för att möjliggöra framgångsrik uppföljning av affärsnytta inom IT-projekt så att måluppfyllelse kan säkerställas.Även undersöka om utformning av projektmål kan bidra till att underlätta uppföljnings aktivitet.Undersökningen genomförs som en kvalitativ studie där en verksamhet inom små och mellanstora företagssegmentet (SMF), undersökts då de bedriver ett aktivt IT-projekt gällande byte av affärssystem. Undersökningen resulterade i fem konkreta slutsatser som är av en förklarande och upplysande karaktär.

     

    Undersökningen visar att:

    • BMP möjliggör uppföljning av affärsnytta inom IT-projekt, men är inte en förutsättning.
    • BMP kräver ett omfattande åtagande för att bidra till ökat värde för en verksamhet.
    • En genomarbetad målformulering enligt akronymen SMART kan öka en verksamhets möjlighet till styrning och kontroll av dess projektmål.
    • Tydligare koppling till identifiering och mätningsmetoder krävs för att maximera värdet av att ta sig an BMP.
    • Systemleverantörs och kundrelationen behöver belysas inom BMP i takt med färre egna utvecklingsprojekt inom affärssystem initieras.

     

    Brister i teorin rör konkreta metoder för att mäta affärsnytta och hur Key Peformance Indictors (KPI) kan användas på ett effektivt sätt. Tillsammans med att forskningen inte redogör för hur en verksamhet kan arbeta med uppföljning av affärsnytta i en kund- och systemleverantörsrelation. Explicit uttryckt när en verksamhet genomför upphandling av affärssystem ifrån en systemleverantör. Detta rekommenderas ligga till grund för framtida undersökningar.

    The final stage of a designers work is always a bit tricky. Design is an abstract phenomenon and no one can tell when a design is really finished. The design process that designers work within has been thoroughly studied but cannot be truly mapped with strict constraints which the designer can follow to succeed. Therefore, in this paper we take a look at the final stage in the design process. The main goal is to get more knowledge and highlight key factors about what designers face when they are about finish their design or what forces them to leave a project that can stay in development for eternity. Together with theories from a literature research and real life experience from people in the design profession we have looked at the issue. The results show that the key elements that are common in the final stage of the design process include evaluation, limitation and trusting your own judgment.

    Det rådande EU-direktivet som behandlar dataskydd från år 1995 är idag inte lika aktuellt som när det infördes. Det är därför i hög tid att en uppdatering kommer. I maj 2018 införs den nya dataskyddsförordningen, GDPR, som är EU:s senaste förordning. Den kommer ersätta Sveriges personuppgiftslag, PuL, som idag styr över hur personuppgifter behandlas. GDPR kommer innebära strängare lagar kring informationshantering och fler rättigheter till privatpersoner. Ett exempel är att privatpersoner kommer kunna be om att få alla data kopplad till personen raderade. Många företag erbjuder medlemskap till privatpersoner och lagrar därför kunduppgifter digitalt, vilket betyder att de påverkas av GDPR i stor grad då de måste omforma sina IT-system för att leva upp till de nya kraven.

    Denna studie handlar om fyra företag och förändringarna de står inför samt hur de arbetar med de nya kraven som GDPR innebär för dem. En kravmodell skapas med en sammanställning av de nya kraven och resultatet visar sedan vilka företag som börjat arbeta med de kraven. Resultatet visar även hur långt de kommit i sitt arbete med dataskyddsförordningen och kan förhoppningsvis vägleda andra företag i hur de bör arbeta med dataskyddsförordningen samt vilka förändringar de bör genomföra för att leva upp till de nya kraven.

    This study is about IT-tools and communication in distributed system development teams. The purpose of this study is to identify how the members of distributed teams perceive their own communication, and to identify the characteristics that are considered important in the IT-tools to be able to maintain a good communication. To carry out this work, we did a case study where we sent out survey to a company that works distributed and that has team members both in Spain and in Sweden. We also conducted an interview with one of the respondents to be able to get deeper answers to our survey questions. The study showed that most were satisfied with the communication, but they still felt that communication could be improved. The study also showed that most respondents lacked certain qualities in their current IT-tools. The result of this study should be of interest to companies with similar conditions.

    Abstract [en]

    Rapid growing volumes of data demands new solutions in terms of analysing and visualizing. The growing amount of data contains valuable information which organizations in a more digitized society need to manage. It is a major challenge to visualize data, both in a static and interactive way. Through visualization of big data follows several opportunities containing risk assessment and decision basis. Previous research indicates a lack of standards and guidelines considering the development of interactive dashboards. By studying factors of success from a user-centered perspective we proceeded with a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews. In addition to this we performed a thorough examination of existing literature in this particular field of research. A total of eight interviews were held, all eight respondents had experience from using or developing dashboards. The results indicates that user experience is an important yet not a sufficiently used principle. They also indicates challenges concerning the management of big data and particularly visualizing it. The results developed into a model which illustrates guidelines and vital components to orchestrate when developing a dashboard. A user-centered approach should pervade the entire developing process. Interactive functionalities are rather a necessity than a recommendation. With interactiveness comes drill-down functionalities which leads to a more intuitively practice. User experience is an essential component of the model, bringing light to individual customisations as well as it makes allowances to a large target group. The last component highlights the importance of early prototyping and an iterative approach to software development. The conclusion of the study is our complete model which brings opportunities to transform big data to great knowledge.

    Social media has increased exponentially since the Internet reached people's homes during the 90's. The social media Facebook alone has 243 million users in Europe, social media also became a primary choice for most users to interact with each other. In a  world where the information flow and each relationship are constant, a flaw emerged in how the social media interacts with the user. To investigate how individuals experience notifications in social media, affect theory by Silvan Tomkins was used and then supplemented by a literature review. The notifications were then examined qualitatively  using tests and  with the help of users in a focus group setting. This study resulted in  a defined set of emotions that individuals experience of notifications as well as  opinions  about  existing  functionality  and  proposed guidelines from a user-centered perspective.

    In this paper, the authors demonstrate the suitability of IT-supported knowledge repositories for knowledge retention. Successful knowledge retention is dependent on whatis stored in a repository and, hence, possible to share. Accordingly, the ability to capture theright (relevant) knowledge is a key aspect. Therefore, to increase the quality in an IT-supported knowledge repository, the identification activity, which starts the capture process, must besuccessfully performed. While critical success factors (CSFs) for knowledge retention andknowledge management are frequently discussed in the literature, there is a knowledge gapconcerning CSFs for this specific knowledge capture activity. From a knowledge retention perspective, this paper proposes a model that characterizes CSFs for the identification activity and highlights the CSFs’ contribution to knowledge retention.

    Many research studies have highlighted the low completion rate and slow progress in PhD education. Universities strive to improve throughput and quality in their PhD education programs. In this study, the perceived problems of PhD education are investigated from PhD students' points of view, and how an Information and Communication Technology Support System (ICTSS) may alleviate these problems. Data were collected through an online open questionnaire sent to the PhD students at the Department of (the institution's name has been removed during the double-blind review) with a 59% response rate. The results revealed a number of problems in the PhD education and highlighted how online technology can support PhD education and facilitate interaction and communication, affect the PhD students' satisfaction, and have positive impacts on PhD students' stress. A system was prototyped, in order to facilitate different types of online interaction through accessing a set of online and structured resources and specific communication channels. Although the number of informants was not large, the result of the study provided some rudimentary ideas that refer to interaction problems and how an online ICTSS may facilitate PhD education by providing distance and collaborative learning, and PhD students' self-managed communication.

    Peer interaction and collaborative learning through the use of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) is used to an increasing extent in higher education. Universities attempt to motivate learners (students) to support their peers to enhance the quality of learning outcomes. This study monitors how an ICTSS (ICT-based Support System) facilitates peer interaction in the Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis process. The aim of the study was to investigate learners’ perception of usefulness of an ICTSS for peer interaction and the influencing factors on the quality of the peer interaction. The ICTSS was developed at the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences (DSV), at Stockholm University. The system facilitates peer interaction in three ways: peer reviews, active participation, and final opposition. The study employed a mixed-method approach, which included an online survey followed by in-depth interviews. The target groups were learners at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level in computer science and information systems. The findings showed that learners perceived the peer interaction useful to enhance the quality of the thesis outcomes. However, there are influencing factors affecting the quality of peer interaction, in different phases of the thesis process. Examples of these factors are the quality of thesis manuscripts, supervisors’ control and grading of the process, clear instructions and guidelines, learners’ understanding of the peer interaction and why it takes place, previous training and learners’ motivation to perform peer reviews. Following these factors, the study developed a set of strategic suggestions from both pedagogical and technical aspects to enhance the peer interaction in the thesis process. Considering these suggestions makes the use of the ICTSS more effective to enhance the quality of thesis learning outcomes.

    Choosing open source software: Strategies behind and reasons for municipalities’ use of Open Office2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of the study was to explore the strategies and reasons for Swedish municipalities to migrate from proprietary office applications, such as Microsoft Office, to the use of the open source software OpenOffice. We performed a comparative case study of three Swedish municipalities in the region of Västra Götaland currently implementing or planning to implement OpenOffice; Alingsås, Falköping and Kungälv. The methods of data collection used in the study were semi-structured interviews with IT managers, such as IT strategists and Chief Information Officers (CIOs), in each municipality, and document analysis.

    The findings of the study indicated that one of the municipalities had an IT strategy including strategies for use of open source software. The second municipality planned implementation of OpenOffice but were “between IT strategies”, as the current IT strategy hadn’t been updated for some years. The third municipality had abolished IT strategies, as the difficulties of anchoring strategies on all levels of the organisations were too large. Instead, operative guidelines concerning i.e. the use of open source software were used in IT management. The main driver of implementing OpenOffice was to lower IT costs. The IT managers were well aware of the fact that open source software is not entirely free of cost, but estimated the total cost of ownership of OpenOffice to be less than for Microsoft Office. Perceived barriers of implementation and use of OpenOffice were lack of standardisation with current administrative and enterprise systems used in the municipalities as well as a general lack of knowledge and familiarity with open source software among staff. There were also a genuine concern over the possibility of the community of OpenOffice developers leaving the program and its users to embark on new open source software project. The traditional relationship between systems suppliers and customers was perceived to disappear and be replaced with a much more uncertain business relationship. Further research in a larger number of Swedish municipalities is needed in order to increase the understanding of the circumstances of migration to open source software in municipalities.

    This qualitative study examines positive and negative effects on effectivity as a result of alternative processes (workarounds) performed within an ISO-certificated organizations information system. To identify these workarounds we used contextual inquiry. This gave us an understanding of how the information systems users actually practice their work. The result of our acquired data revealed six major workarounds. To analyze these workarounds in relation to its complicated context we utilized three theoretical models. This gave us a broad understanding of each of the workarounds and made it possible to understand why each workaround was conducted, its implications on effectivity and what kind of a challenge/dilemma it posed. The analysis indicated that the workarounds had what we deduced as negative impact on the organizations effectivity as a whole. Many of the workarounds could have been seen as very effective alternatives to the designed work process but only if valued in a micro-context. The fact that they still occur are most likely the result of the fact that the users of the information system lack understanding of how the organization and its processes are structured as a whole and how their work as well as how they perform it is part of a bigger picture. Finally we present how future research, based on this study, could focus on developing a better model to understand the complicated context. We also propose that studies could investigate the possibility of shaping an ISO-standard which is responsive to the diversity of organizations actual work processes while still ensuring a qualitative standard.

    Today´s information society is constantly increasing the quantity of digital information that organisations have access to and depend on. Despite this dependency, few descriptions exist of the benefits which this digital information can provide the organisation with. Examples of what the organisation can use the information for include business intelligence or in a business process. The absence of such benefit descriptions results in missed opportunities in organisational management and a failure to cultivate the artefact. In terms of a practical operational work role, this means that the artefact just exists and that there are no decisions, communication and discussions connected to it. Earlier research about benefits in the Information Systems field is focused on describing the process of finding benefit factors from different IT investments and how these investments can be measured financially. The result of this was that it was only the measurable benefits that were taken into consideration. Later benefit management research has shown interest in the intangible benefit factors as well and added this as an activity in the evaluation process. Today´s view is that the benefit consists both of tangible and intangible benefit factors. This thesis emphasises benefit factors found by means of qualitative research in organisations producing Technical Information (TI). TI isinformation connected to goods and services and is a part of a product. The intangible benefit factors found which are connected to TI are semantic interoperability and knowledge. Semantic interoperability is beneficial both for the organisation and the individuals – in the first case exemplified by a uniform working process and in the second as efficiency in the internal communication. Knowledge also provides benefit both to the organisation and the individuals – the organisation can operate without depending on certain individuals and information gives the individuals mobility in their profession.The next part in the thesis discusses information management´simpact on benefit factors. In the case of an autocratic approach, it is the organisation that benefits most, whereas a decentralised management style provides the individual co-workers with a greater number of benefit factors. This proves that information management is an important and decisive ingredient, and that it affects benefit factors.One step in the direction of converting the intangible benefit factors into tangible ones is to visualise them. In this work the theoreticallens provided by a boundary object has been used. This lens adds a qualitative view on cross-boundary information and has efficiency approaches. These approaches are the syntactical, semantic andpragmatic. Via interpretations from the thesis´s two empirical cases, those approaches are "measured" by interpretations and visualised by the three leaves of a clover. This gives the opportunity to describewhat information efficiency, in this case connected to a positiveexpectation, can contribute to the organisation or the individuals. By this procedure, different cases or time aspects can be compared,thereby providing a basis for decision-making, communication and discussion. Future research in this area can be made in different directions – one is to investigate whether the intangible benefit factors can be turned into measurable ones. In this way, the internal organisation can be provided with better knowledge of the digital information's impact. Another research direction is to investigate how the passage of time affects the benefit factors that digital information gives the organisation.

    Seeking out and understanding the benefits of information are essential to an organization. Internal in an organization it is important to understand created benefit in order to communicate, prioritize and increase or decrease prioritization in strategically important business areas. In modern society digitalized information is an area that is on the increase in enterprises, as is the knowledge that information is of importance. Therefore there should be a demand for understanding and measuring the beneficial factors that information gives an organization. In this study, empirical material was collected in a literature study from journals highly ranked in the Information Systems Area and with special focus on the benefit of information. The perspective of the study has been intra organizational. The purpose is to derive found benefit factors and use them as a basis to discuss and problematize on the nature of benefit of information and hereby give organizations help to understand this area.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine what happens with the internal view an organisation has on information management when a holistic view is diminished into a blinkered view and the consequences it conveys for the customer. The customer consequences are divided into two parts – creation of external customers’ values and creation of value for the internal customer explored in terms of efficiency.

    Methodology/approach – Interviews with both outsourced co-workers and project leaders still in the organization.

    Findings – The organisations lack of listening to the external customer affects all three areas lifted in the analysis. The studied organisations have great opportunities for developing their process for producing TI, both regarding their mutual relationship as well as in regards to the external customer with the help of Lean and by applying a more holistic view on the production of Technical Information.

    Abstract [en]

    This chapter revisits a System Dynamics model developed in 2002 with the aim of exploring the future impacts of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on environmental sustainability in the EU, which then consisted of 15 countries. The time horizon of the study was 20 years (2000–2020). We analyze the results in light of empirical data that is now available for 2000–2012. None of the three scenarios that were developed by experts to specify the external factors needed to run the model were realistic from today’s point of view. If the model is re-run with more realistic input data for the first half of the simulation period, however, the main results regarding the impact of ICT remain qualitatively the same; they seem to be relatively robust implications of the causal system structure, as it is represented in the model. Overall, the impacts of ICT for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental burdens for 2020 tend to be slightly stronger if the simulation is based on the empirical data now available.

    The induction of demand by increasing the efficiency of a production or consumption process is known as the rebound effect. Feedback loops in System Dynamics can be used to conceptualize the structure of this complex phenomenon and also for communicating model-based insights. In passenger transport, the rebound effect can be induced through increased cost efficiency (direct economic rebound) and/or increase in speed (time rebound). In this paper we review and compare two models on environmental effects of passenger transport—including a model on the role of information and communication technology. We highlight the feedback mechanisms used to deal with the rebound effect (price, efficiency, and time rebound).

    Development of support systems in the area of e-health have different set of conditions that makes it more difficult than in other context of IS/IT use. In this research we explore a development case and look at the development process and the outcomes in terms of solutions. The research concerns the area of heart failure and how patients could be more successful with self-care. The outcome from the project was the creation of a portfolio of solutions, which was a combination of technical and process solutions. The outcome draws the attention to the need of flexible solutions and cater to the diversity of the patients and their personal situations.     Abstract [en]

    Enterprises need to understand the impact of different types of knowledge management (KM) approaches on business strategy, and how they interact with other types of initiatives to produce synergistic effects. The hypothesis of this paper is that a model based on the balanced scorecard approach (BSC) can be used to balance the diverse set of KM approaches that are described in the KM literature. A literature study has been carried out connecting general examples of BSC objectives to KM approaches and applications. The resulting framework indicates that each of the major aspects of KM has its place in the BSC model, and thus has a role in the success of the company from a strategic viewpoint. A KM strategy according to this perspective should articulate how a company intends to strike a balance between different KM approaches. Contributions of the framework to related theory are discussed and illustrated by using a rich case from literature.

    This thesis studies the usability issues of the mobile phone in informal Swedish language learning. The concept of usability is defined by expanding the technical usability attributes of Jakob Nielsen with other recent attributes derived from considering the technical aspects of mobile learning (m-learning). Thus, the ultimate structure of the usability factors that are discussed in this study consists of: accessibility, easy-to-learn, technical design, efficiency and satisfaction. With the support of the relevant previous literature and interview, we research this topic by considering the mobile-assisted language learning (MALL), informal language-learning and usability elements, in order to explore and identify the usability of mobile phone. The goal of this study is to contribute to detailed understanding of mobile phone usage, further identify the usability issues of mobile phones by obtaining both critical and commendatory feedbacks and reflections from the users. For final results, through qualitative research approach, we offered several findings regarding the mobile phone usability with specified reasons.

    Abstract [en]

    In this study, a method for landing with a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) on a µm size ake of graphene was developed. Two approaches were explored, one using physical guides to navigate on the sample and another one using capacitive pickup in the system. We show that with no modication of the STM that was used, we could land on a micrometer size ake of graphene.

    The advancement in digital technologies drives industries to change their core businesses which present number of challenges. One of them is transformation of manufacturing industries towards servitization. This paper reports empirical findings from an on-going project related to servitization in the age of digital innovation. The research study is in the context of the vehicle industry and concerns e-maintenance services based on remote diagnostics technologies. It explores the servitization of vehicle industry in the age of digital innovation. Such innovations embark challenges to innovation environment. A study in this regard has been conducted and it revealed the challenges related to the design, organizational strategy and organizational transformation.

    Abstract [en]

    The advancement of digital technologies is driving traditional product oriented businesses to move from selling product to selling solutions. In order to exploit business potentials from technology, it is important to understand the potential of the technology and how it influences the value creation in a digital environment where it is developed and to be deployed. To understand this changing environment, I have studied remote diagnostics as an example of digital technology within the vehicle industry as a source of new value for business. The findings show that digitized products not only helps to solve existing problems in providing services but also provides potential to generate value for new products and services in the networked environment. An implication from the findings for product oriented firms is that value creation with digitized products requires new business processes. Based on the findings, a discussion is presented about how generativity influences value creation via value in design, governance and networking in a digital ecosystem.

    Companies and projects often face the challenge of creating something new to increase their competitiveness. In this process of creating something new creativity is an important factor. By using a creative approach and utilizing creative processes new innovations emerges. An industry that has grown in recent years is the computer games industry. Competition is fierce and for the companies to succeed, the product need that extra something to make it stand out among all the produced games.

    The project manager's role in the creative process and the ability to be creative within a distance based company is not something highlighted by previous research. This formed the basis of our research question:

    How do project managers act to create conditions for creativity among employees in a remotely organized computer game company?

    To answer our question, we chose to make a descriptive case study. The project is based in the Nordic countries with employees worldwide. It is altogether a distance based project with no shared workspace. We interviewed the projects two project managers, and supplemented with a qualitative survey amongst the employees. The collected material was analyzed with a methodology inspired by Grounded Theory and previous research results.

    Three approaches of how the project managers act to promote creativity are evident in their stories. These approaches are trust, availability and tolerance. They form the basis of our model on how the project managers in this case act to promote employee creativity. Besides the three approaches, two concepts emerged as important tools for creativity in the project: motivation and communication. Our conclusion can be described as follows:

    Motivation provides the conditions for creative thinking. By building an organization where project leaders show trust in the ability of employees, and allows tolerance to be a watchword for collaboration, project managers work to improve employee motivation. This will create opportunities for creativity among the employees in this distance based project. Communication is essential for creative work in the project and virtual means of communication a way to increase availability.

    Abstract [en]

    We describe cross language retrieval experiments using Amharic queries and English language document collection from our participation in the bilingual ad hoc track at the CLEF 2007. Two monolingual and eight bilingual runs were submitted. The bilingual experiments designed varied in terms of usage of long and short queries, presence of pseudo relevance feedback (PRF), and three approaches (maximal expansion, first-translation-given, manual) for word sense disambiguation. We used an Amharic-English machine readable dictionary (MRD) and an online Amharic-English dictionary in order to do the lookup translation of query terms. In utilizing both resources, matching query term bigrams were always given precedence over unigrams. Out of dictionary Amharic query terms were taken to be possible named entities in the language, and further filtering was attained through restricted fuzzy matching based on edit distance. The fuzzy matching was performed for each of these terms against automatically extracted English proper names. The Lemur toolkit for language modeling and information retrieval was used for indexing and retrieval. Although the experiments are too limited to draw conclusions from, the obtained results indicate that longer queries tend to perform similar to short ones, PRF improves performance considerably, and that queries tend to fare better when we use the first translation given in the MRD rather than using maximal expansion of terms by taking all the translations given in the MRD.

    Abstract [en]

    This study will increase understanding of how a system developer can solve complex problems within organizations by developing a new information technology system (IT-system), with a focus on technical- and organizational interoperability at the integration process. The authors act as system developers through a case study where there is a need for a new IT-system.

    In this thesis an abductive approach is used combined with an instrumental case study. The work is split up into four phases:

    (1) Identifying problems within the organization by drawing up business models, collecting data through qualitative semi-structured interviews with stakeholders, and the development of a theoretical base. As theoretical frame of reference Integration and interoperability (I & I) is defined, business models are explained, how technical- and operational interoperability differs, how business models are created, agile software development and usability of IT-systems.

    (2) Building, intervention and evaluation. The IT-system is built using an iterative and incremental software development process where focus is on solving the identified problems. During the development stage requirements and challenges are identified to create the business model target view. The IT-system is developed to reflect this view where each iteration of the IT-system is revised from flaws discovered during interviews with stakeholders. The first iteration did not fulfill the stakeholders’ requirements and expectations, but later iterations succeeded in this and were implemented within the organization. When the IT-system had been implemented, it was evaluated by the end users to identify if the system developers had succeeded in solving the organizational problems, and to check usability of the IT-system.

    (3) Reflection and learning. The result is analyzed and discussed, compared to the theoretical frame of reference and course of action. The result shows that system developers succeeded in identifying complex problems within the organization and managed to create a new IT-system that met stakeholders’ needs, while also solving identified organizational problems.

    (4) In the last phase formalization of learning are general concepts compiled that can be used in other projects. In this thesis are eight aspects and principles are identified that can be used by system developers when developing IT-systems.

    Small enterprises strive to survive and grow in the business they are involved. They makeefforts to utilize different resources and technologies available to this end as long as it isaffordable and productive. Information Communication Technology or ICT and e-commerceare among those technologies that take the front line. This study asks the question ‘howmuch are Ethiopian small enterprises responsive to ICT and the internet and how much ofthe benefits have they utilized for their growth?’ It takes five small enterprises involved inimport and export business to perform case study research on the issue and examines theirutilization level of the technology. The findings show that small enterprises in the countryare on a very low level of utilizing ICT and e-commerce due to several reasons among whichare scarcity in infrastructure development and expertise in the area coupled with barriersfrom government policy and bank regulations.

    Some 50% of the people in the world live in rural areas, often under harsh conditions and in poverty. The need for knowledge of how to improve living conditions is well documented. In response to this need, new knowledge of how to improve living conditions in rural areas and elsewhere is continuously being developed by researchers and practitioners around the world. People in rural areas, in particular, would certainly benefit from being able to share relevant knowledge with each other, as well as with stakeholders (e.g. researchers) and other organizations (e.g. NGOs). Central to knowledge management is the idea of knowledge sharing. This study is based on the assumption that knowledge management can support sustainable development in rural and remote regions. It aims to present a framework for knowledge management in sustainable rural development, and an inventory of existing frameworks for that. The study is interpretive, with interviews as the primary source for the inventory of stakeholders, knowledge categories and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure. For the inventory of frameworks, a literature study was carried out. The result is a categorization of the stakeholders who act as producers and beneficiaries of explicit and indigenous development knowledge. Stakeholders are local government, local population, academia, NGOs, civil society and donor agencies. Furthermore, the study presents a categorization of the development knowledge produced by the stakeholders together with specifications for the existing ICT infrastructure. Rural development categories found are research, funding, agriculture, ICT, gender, institutional development, local infrastructure development, and marketing & enterprise. Finally, a compiled framework is presented, and it is based on ten existing frameworks for rural development that were found in the literature study, and the empirical findings of the Gilgit-Baltistan case. Our proposed framework is divided in four levels where level one consists of the identified stakeholders, level two consists of rural development categories, level three of the knowledge management system and level four of sustainable rural development based on the levels below. In the proposed framework we claim that the sustainability of rural development can be achieved through a knowledge society in which knowledge of the rural development process is shared among all relevant stakeholders.

    Learning within the organization is not only linked to the formal training and education of the employees, but also to informal processes of sharing knowledge. The knowledge is often embedded in organizational activities, practices and norms, as well as in social ties among individuals in the organization. We analyzed employees' behavior and acceptance of online social networking as an information system (IS) of learning. The analysis is performed by a descriptive case survey within a telecom corporation in Pakistan. The purpose of our study is to bring an informal learning system at workplace. In this study we obtain quantitative data from 105 out of 180 targeted employees. The results show that a majority of the studied employees favor social networking to connect colleagues at different levels and more than half of the respondents share their knowledge and experiences using social sites. Nearly half of the respondents strongly agree that knowledge sharing is an important role of social sites within the organization and many are in favor of social media as an informal learning system. The results also show how the professionals use social networking sites to share their experiences and to build a virtual break in hierarchical levels of professions. This paper illustrates the benefits of social networking sites as an informal work integrated learning tool that also serves as an IS model for the organization.

    While there is a wealth of studies on the subject of serious games, the same cannot be said on the issue of teaching with games, especially in game-based learning settings with adult learners. Over the years, most research in this area has been focused on the ‘active substance(s)’ of games for learning, focusing mainly on characteristics of games, but often failing to take the whole context of game-based learning into consideration, such as the role(s) of the teacher. However, the past two or three years has seen a shift in focus from merely the game as an isolated artefact, to also include more discussions on how games can successfully be integrated into an educational setting, as well as challenges as pitfalls of which instructors need to be aware. This paper aims to outline the contemporary research on instructor-led serious gaming and its implications for the design of serious gaming environments.

    Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) holds the potential to improve contemporary business operations, which are redefined frequently based on the demands of global competition. There are numerous EDI systems, which an enterprise can choose to adopt in order to meet its needs and goals. International literature demonstrates a variation of views regarding the adoption of new technologies, which differ according the size of each organization along with internal and external impediments and determinants. The use of EDI worldwide has gained a positive acceptance by commercial companies, industries and service providers, followed by rapid adoption mainly in the processes of large organizations. Conversely, the predictions of previous years’ studies have not been materialized to the expected extent. In Greece in particular, there is low penetration and a reluctance to adopt EDI technologies by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). This study is based on the theoretical framework of Technology, Organization and Environment (TOE). A qualitative multiple case study research design has been used, in order to provide further insights on the factors that affect the decision of Greek SMEs in adopting EDI technologies. The significance of the perceived direct and indirect benefits, the effects of the perceived financial cost and technical competence and the importance of industry and government pressure on corporate level, are analyzed and discussed. An empirical support of the low penetration of EDI in the Greek SMEs' community is also provided. This research contributes in the existing knowledge about EDI adoption decisions regarding Greek SMEs by providing a variation of views, further insights on how Greek SMEs behave and react during the current economic recession and a new cost factor that emerged within the analysis of multiple cases. Avenues for future research are recommended in order to expand this study's findings in the field of corporate IT innovation.
