    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study was to to examine what teachers think about visual art and how the learning process in this subject does look like. To answer these issues, I made interviews with five teachers of visual art from different schools, and I examined several examples of pupils’ artworks. The stories of the teachers were analyzed in relation to governing documents and with assumptions from sociocultural theory, postmodernism and pedagogical - aesthetic research as theoretical point of view.

    By the qualitative interview method, the observations of the pupil’s artworks, and by the analysis of the interviews with the teachers, I have come to the conclusion that teachers think differently about art but they try to keep themselves in line with the national governing documents. Its affects aspects of disciplines, styles, techniques and medium that is exemplified by the pupil’s art works, and it points out similarities and differences between the pupil’s art works and between the teachers when teaching visual art.

    The work revolves aorund the notion of the artist as a jester. In 6 parts the text points to both (art) history and contemporary art. The form resembles to an extent the structuring of the later solo-exhibition and seeks to prevent a linear reading and as such, form becomes content.

    Abstract [en]

    The study's purpose is to investigate whether children and parents know the instrument trumpet and the beliefs they have about this instrument.  

     

    My questions are:

     

    • What do 6 and 7-year-olds and their parents know of the instrument trumpet? 
    • What are their beliefs concerning the trumpet and what does the trumpet mean to them? 

     

    To find out about these questions, I have conducted a survey study in Arvika with children in first grade and their parents. 33 adults and 34 children from three schools took part in the survey.

     

    The results showed that knowledge of the trumpet are quite good among 6 and 7-year-olds and their parents. All the respondents in this survey know what the trumpet is, and over one-third of the 67 respondents know about someone who plays the trumpet. Among the children exist no big "celebrity" trumpet player. Instead they mention friends or acquaintances that play the instrument. There were some well-known musicians among adults but it was often aging jazz trumpeters. 6 and 7-year-olds are pretty open-minded about trumpet. They seem to consider both that young, old, men and women could be playing the trumpet. The parents, however, think that men dominate playing the trumpet. Otherwise are the parents also pretty open-minded. The music school appears to have a strong name in Arvika. Many respondents stated that it´s possible to contact the music school if you want to start playing the trumpet. The results also showed that the trumpet is not considered as boring. Most people put it midway between boring and fun to play.

     

    Based on the findings in this study, the trumpet seems to be a well-known and somewhat appreciated instrument among the respondents. At the same time it seems to be a bit out of range from a satisfying reputation.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper is about save systems and will analyze save functions in various games. Save systems in games are usually blamed for harming the suspension of disbelief as it is an act taking place outside the game and should only be used for its intended purpose: letting the players store their game data, and progress whenever they need.

    The game save function developed as rapid leaps of technology were made, with the beginning era of home consoles and home computers allowing players to spend more time playing, creating a demand for longer play sessions in games which lead to a need of methods for storing game data.

    The analysis of save systems is carried out in this paper by using MDA Framework (Mechanics, Dynamics, Aesthetics), a tool used for documenting game design. This framework can be used to analyze a game from a designer‟s or player‟s perspective. By reversing the framework ADM (Aesthetics, Dynamics and Mechanics) one can analyze the user experience, which is how the player perceives the game‟s aesthetics to be, depending on the dynamics and mechanics.

    This analysis aims to provide knowledge of how consistency in game design and the save system can be used to create a cohesive game world that facillitates the player's experience and immersion.

    Abstract [en]

    This project degree paper is examining, analyzing and discussing the way towards the final interpretation of a piece of music. As a musician, the way to perform music on stage is always accompanied with some doubts and decisions that are made during its way to a concert performance regarding all kinds of aspects while playing. Therefore, this paper is critically viewing the factors that have an impact on musicians along the study of a piece.To be able to present the different factors Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G minor op. 57 has been analyzed from the point of view of my own interpretation and the interpretation of Shostakovich himself on the piano together with two different quartets: the Beethoven and Borodin Quartet. This in order to clarify and find ways to understand the way Shostakovich himself wanted the music he produced to sound.The study showed that even though Shostakovich was very accurate with his notation in the scores, the music was performed differently depending on the musicians. Music itself is not only produced and generated by the composer likewise the musicians themselves have not only their own thoughts to consider, but also four greater factors: the musician’s technical abilities, the composer’s biography, historical knowledge and the use of both recordings and visuals to receive a more accurate understanding of the music. All this in order to produce an objectively more correct way of playing and to fulfill the intentions of the composer, which also showed can be dependent on the musicians.

    To understand how different design solutions affect users, designers traditionally use different evaluation methods that mainly rely on conscious feedback from the users. However, the complexity of human behaviour, where a large part is unconscious, point to a need for an extended tool box addressing the part not accessible to human conscious knowledge. Here, we describe a design research lab where traditional methods are complemented with tools to measure physiological signals influenced by emotional and sympathetic responses. These tools include galvanic skin response (GSR), electrocardiograph (ECG), and electroencephalograph (EEG). Typical sessions with acquired data of conscious and unconscious user reactions are described. The large body of data collected, which also require non-design expertise for interpretation, suggest that a further development towards simplified output data of the unconscious reactions is needed to allow wider use within industrial design work.

    Syftet med studien var att belysa hur förskollärare beskriver hur barn ges möjlighet att möta musik i förskolan. Semistrukturerade intervjuer med åtta förskollärare har genomförts på sex olika förskolor, för att fördjupa kunskapen om musikens funktion för förskolebarns utveckling samt förskollärares förhållningssätt kring barns spontana musikintressen. Resultatet visar att samtliga förskollärare i grunden hade en positiv relation till musik och var medvetna om musikens betydelse för barns utveckling. Å andra sidan visade det sig att flera av förskollärarna saknade medvetenhet om barns spontana musicerande och i stället lade fokus på den inplanerade verksamheten.

    I två analyser av filmerna; Do The Right Thing av Spike Lee (1989) och Hemligheter och lögner av Mike Leigh (1996), har jag undersökt  hur och varför samhällsproblematik  som berör klass- och rasfrågan presenteras på film utifrån hur cultural studies teoretiskt förhåller sig till problematiska relationer mellan kulturella identiteter i USA och Storbritannien. Jag kom fram till att identifikationen av den kulturella identiteten var olika i respektive länder; USA och Storbritannien. I USA var rastillhörigheten utgångspunkten för den kulturella identiteten och i Storbritannien var det klasstillhörigheten utgångspunkten för den kulturella identiteten.

    Abstract [en]

    Can we change the way we imagine and relate to the risks of our common world, such as plastic pollution, nuclear threats, climate change or economic crisis? With this question at heart, this thesis discusses our interaction with the mediated, and often distant, global complexities and risks.

    Following the perspective of the spectator and consumer, this study weaves together literature with stories from culture, media, design and entertainment. It examines the relationship of the personal to the global by outlining five critical looking lenses focused on distance, emission, contact, disruption and invisibility.

    The resulting project articulates speculative design strategies for reconfiguring our relation to two select global risks; the nuclear contamination threat and plastic pollution. What if these scenarios were real, what if we felt these values, how would the world be different? By questioning the rational, these narratives aim to trigger the imagination of alternative possibilities, and requestion our current global dilemmas.

    In my BA project, I travelled to Tanzania with a MFS stipend and experienced humanitarian architecture up close - by following architectural group Asant Collective´s project in Tanzania: a new Children Centre for a small non-governmental organization called ECONEF. 

    I have worked with social questions / responsibilities regarding our role as interior architects in developing countries - often feeling like a anthropologist.

    In my design part, I have re-drawed the layout for ECONEF´s planned new orphanage after a analyse of the existing orphanage, culture and traditions.

    Detta arbete syftar till att undersöka hur musikteorilärare på gymnasiet arbetar med ämnet musikteori genom observationer av lektioner och intervjuer med lärare. Fokus ligger på att granska utrymmet som ges till elevsamarbete, användandet av digitala verktyg samt hur lärarna relaterar ämnet till elevernas praktiska användande. Detta har undersökts genom att först observera musikteorilärare under lektionstillfällen för att hitta intressanta aspekter av deras undervisning, inspirerat av metoden grounded theory. Sedan intervjuades dessa musikteorilärare närmre om just de aspekter som ansågs intressanta. I arbetets analysdel relateras sedan lärarnas svar till en teori om lärande som kallas Collaborative learning. Inom denna teori är grupparbete, ofta assisterat med digitala verktyg mycket viktigt, vilket är relevant för detta arbete. Under intervjuerna berättade en av de två intervjuade lärarna att grupparbeten var väldigt vanliga och att digitala verktyg användes ofta i undervisningen. Den andre läraren berättade motsatsen: grupparbeten skedde sällan och digitala verktyg hade provats under lektionstillfällen, men med otillfredsställande resultat. Båda lärarna relaterade musikteoriämnet till elevernas praktiska användande.

    Abstract [en]

    Meetings in urban spaces is a thesis in information design with emphasis on spatial design. The aim of this thesis is to is to examine how poorly utilised spaces in urban environments can become more useful, as well as which criteria are required to enable a pleasant stay in these locations. The object of the study is the terrace outside Stockholm Public Library which, due to its current appearance and lack of function, most of the time is unused and deserted.

    The study’s aim is to generate a design proposal that encourages an increase in the flow of people to the terraces and that makes people want to spend more of their time there. The goal is to get more visitors to appreciate the terraces and utilise the space better.

    From the results of collected empirical data through spatial analysis, observations, notations of movement, interviews and discussions it has become clear that the reason for the terraces being unused is a lack of functionality and the spaces appearance. The conclusion of the theoretical and practical studies about spatiality, shape, urban public spaces and cognitive psychology etc., show that the choice of shape and placement of spatial elements can contribute to people choosing to linger on the library terraces. In its turn, this knowledge can create the right conditions for a changed pattern of movement and a greater flow of people to the location.

    A design proposal was created, based on theories and empirical data presented in the study. The aim design proposal is to show how it may be possible to draw visitors’ attention to the terraces and create a more natural flow there. This may be achieved by adding round shapes and curved lines, more variety in shape and proportion and by creating more obvious functions that meet visitors’ needs of activity and aesthetics. While this study is focused on the terraces of Stockholm Public Library it is my hope that these conclusions may also be applicable to similar environments in other location.

    Denna uppsats behandlar hur olika föreställningar kring genus och sexualitet tar sig uttryck, dels i de videos som producerar på internet av karaktären Pewdiepie men också i det material som fansen genererar. Studien fokusera på en specifik videohändelse, en sekvens där Pewdiepie ikläder sig en rosa boa och bland annat säger säger ”It’s not called being gay. It’s called being fabulous!” samt vad som görs med denna händelse, hur den remedieras och tas i bruk av fansen. Detta har jag gjort genom att studera innehållet och aktiviteten på fyra bloggar.

    Det övergripande syftet med studien är att bidra till kunskaper om hur mening görs och förhandlas inom unga nätkulturer. Studiens frågeställning är följande:

    • Hur skapas föreställningar kring genus och sexualitet i Pewdiepies videos?

    • Hur omförhandlas dessa betydelser i fansens tolkande praktik?

    Fokus i undersökning ligger på (de visuella) texterna och hur mening skapas utifrån dem. En utvidgad textanalys har gjorts med utgångspunkt ifrån Norman Faircloughs kritiska diskursanalys (CDA) och en analysmodell som Simon Lindgren föreslår, kompletterat med genusteori som har bidragit med begrepp som används som ”verktyg” i analysen.

    Analysen visar att videohändelsen kan ses ge uttryck för en mängd olika och delvis motstridiga föreställningar kopplade till genus och sexualitet. Mycket av Pewdiepiesa gerande kan dock sägas vara grundat i en heteronormativ kultur. Detta ger sig till känna bland annat genom att Pewdiepie i videosekvensen överdriver och parodierar föreställningen om homosexualitet för att på detta sätt påtala att det är en annan sexuell läggning än heterosexualitet. Analysen visar bland annat att humor i form av förlöjligande kan spela en roll för att upprätthålla traditionella könsroller.

    Studie belyser vidare hur fansen i sin (visuellt) tolkande praktik konstruerar, omförhandlar och utvecklar positioner i sin respons på den aktuella videohändelsen. En tolkningsgemenskap som har framträtt i analysen av bloggarna är slashproducenterna. Slashproducenterna gör queera läsningar, vilket innebär ompositioneringar av texter bortom heteronormativa gränsdragningar.

    Avslutningsvis diskuteras vilka pedagogiska tankar som denna undersökning kan aktualiseraoch problematisera. Studien argumenterar bl.a. för att du som lärare genom att inkluderabilder och blickar som utmanar rådande normer kan arbeta för att förändraföreställningsvärldar och därmed öppna upp för en bredare tolerans.

    Abstract [en]

    Snowboarding is today a major winter sport with its own equipment, its own culture and elite riders. For professional athletes or for those who just snowboard for fun, snowboard becomes an extension of their body while in motion.

    The layout on the boards has changed over the years but despite of this there is a lack of scientific studies in the field. Therefore, this study aimed to identify how the graphics of 240 snowboards have evolved between 1980-2010, and fill some of these holes in the scientific documentation. 

    This survey was based on a visual content analysis, which resulted in interesting observations. The results that emerged were that the result can be generalized and that the development of snowboards graphics has changed over the decades. Snowboards from the various decades have specific characteristics that this study provides.

    Visibility analysis is one of the key methods in space syntax theory that discusses visual information conveyed to observers from any location in space that is potentially directly visible for the observer without any obstruction. Visibility – simply defined as what we can see – not only affects the spatial function of buildings, but also has visual relation to the perception of buildings by inhabitants and visitors. In this paper we intend to present the result of visibility analysis applied on a sample of building layouts of different sizes and functions from a variety of places of periods. The main aim of this paper is to statistically explore the general trends of building layouts and show if and how visibility properties such as connectivity, clustering coefficient, mean depth, entropy, and integration values can make distinctions among different functions of buildings. Our findings reveal that there are significant correlation coefficients among global properties of visibility in which we consider the mean value of properties, a similarity suggesting that they are not intensively manipulated by architecture. On the other hand, there are correlations although less so than the previous, still significant among local properties of visibility in which we consider the (max-min) value of properties, suggesting that social, cultural or other physical parameters distinguish buildings individually. We also show that functions such as ‘museum’ and ‘veterinary’ are relatively well-clustered, while functions such as ‘ancient’ and ‘shopping’ show high diversity. In addition, using a decision tree model we show that, in our sample, functions such as ‘museum’ and ‘library’ are more predictable rather than functions such as ‘hospital’ and ‘shopping.’ All of these mean that – at least in our sample – the usability and applicability of well-clustered and well-predicted functions have been predominant in shaping their interior spaces; vice versa, in well-diverse and unpredicted functions, the pragmatic solutions of people’s daily life developed in material culture affect the visual properties of their interior spaces.

    A geothermal bathing facility utilising exhaust thermal energy from a nearby geothermal power plant. During the process of producing thermal and electrical energy enormous amounts of thermal energy is exhausted into the air, energy that if used must be used on location.

    In designing the bath close contact and experience with local materials was a focus point, intimate connection with the surrounding elements are to be experienced at intervals from within the building.

    Reflecting both icelandic bathing culture as well as seeking inspiration from icelandic nature is a center point, bringing the materials tactility to the visitors fingertips.

    Focus has been the following:

    NATURE - Building in exposed landscape carries a responsibility, explore the boundaries between architecture and untouched nature.  Fusing and simulating external experiences inside the program through sequences of different experiences and testing different senses.

    MATERIAL STUDY - Iceland is a poor provider of traditional building materials, examining the available volcanic substances, aesthetic as well as practical usages. Studying their advantages as well as disadvantages.

    ENERGY - To bring to use otherwise exhausted (wasted) thermal energy, study the energy cycle, amount of available energy and utilize it to activate the building itself as well as to heat the various pools.

    The main idea of my thesis work is to deal with the problem of an adaptive reuse of an existing building, which has been designed many years ago and now lost its function. And the way I am approaching this - is through the idea of infection.  What if an existing building becomes infected by new purposes and qualities, and if so then how this move could be performed and realized?

    Unlike the majority of the adaptive reuse projects, mine has at its core the idea of introducing new feathers and elements in the way that it’s natural and a bit illusive, without contrasting the newly added to already existed. My goal is not to reveal this materiality difference. What I’m presenting today is a completely new envelope but from the inside you still can see this repetition of circular forms and understand that these are the same silos, which at some point were deformed in order to perform a different functions.

    This book explores the complexity of preaching as a phenomenon in the medieval Jewish-Christian encounter. This was not only an "encounter" as physical meeting or confrontation (such as the forced attendance of Jews at Christian sermons that took place across Europe), but also an "imaginary" or theological encounter in which Jews remained a figure from a distant constructed time and place who served only to underline and verify Christian teachings.     My project is a “Urban building” on Kungsholmen in Stockholm. Västra Kungsholmen is an expanding area with a lot of new apartment blocks, and the stereotype habitant in the area is the young family with small kids. My intention is then to do a building for the young people in Stockholm, who need their first home. Since it is quite rare with those kind of buildings in Stockholm and on Kungsholmen.

    The building consists of five volumes surrounding a core. In the five volumes there are apartments and the core is the common spaces, that will be shared among the people living in the house. The building has a passage thorough the building for both the ones living in the house and people who wants to take a shortcut through the house to get to the park.

    The purpose of the study is to get a deeper insight of what it means to develop a new singing technique. To study this I have practiced edge ten minutes per day during a period of four weeks, five times a week. Three of these exercices have been videotaped. I have also used a logbook to document new experiences during the process. I have a socio-cultural perspective as a theoretical base in this study. In the result the different tools that were selected show how these were handled and how the process in learning has developed. The results show that the most central tools that were used were the body, the method book, the piano chair, the wall and a song. In the discussion I describe, from a socio-cultural perspective, what the conditions have been, and which tools I have used.

    In this article childrens musical improvisation is investigated through the reflexive interaction paradigm. We used a particular system, the MIROR-Impro, implemented in the framework of the MIROR project (EC-FP7), which is able to reply to the child playing a keyboard by a reflexive output, mirroring (with repetitions and variations) her/his inputs. The study was conducted in a public primary school, with 47 children, aged 6-7. The experimental design used the convergence procedure, based on three sample groups allowing us to verify if the reflexive interaction using the MIROR-Impro is necessary and/or sufficient to improve the childrens abilities to improvise. The following conditions were used as independent variables: to play only the keyboard, the keyboard with the MIROR-Impro but with not-reflexive reply, the keyboard with the MIROR-Impro with reflexive reply. As dependent variables we estimated the childrens ability to improvise in solos, and in duets. Each child carried out a training program consisting of 5 weekly individual 12 min sessions. The control group played the complete package of independent variables; Experimental Group 1 played the keyboard and the keyboard with the MIROR-Impro with not-reflexive reply; Experimental Group 2 played only the keyboard with the reflexive system. One week after, the children were asked to improvise a musical piece on the keyboard alone (Solo task), and in pairs with a friend (Duet task). Three independent judges assessed the Solo and the Duet tasks by means of a grid based on the TAI-Test for Ability to Improvise rating scale. The EG2, which trained only with the reflexive system, reached the highest average results and the difference with EG1, which did not used the reflexive system, is statistically significant when the children improvise in a duet. The results indicate that in the sample of participants the reflexive interaction alone could be sufficient to increase the improvisational skills, and necessary when they improvise in duets. However, these results are in general not statistically significant. The correlation between Reflexive Interaction and the ability to improvise is statistically significant. The results are discussed on the light of the recent literature in neuroscience and music education.

    My interest in Going Offline was twofold. (1) I wanted to investigate how the entrance of a new (virtual) space had affected our understanding of the concepts of space, time and body, and what this could entail for the sole individual. (2) I wanted to, in a really hands on manner, create a small bug in an otherwise well functioning, fast and effective system of communication. In other words to intervene the course of events in my everyday life to affect myself and others connected to it. Like the small stone thrown into the water creating rings (movements) on the surface, where the closest one, which is the most vigorous, influences the next one and so on. Overall I aimed to explore the sole individual’s connection to social structures and a global phenomena.

    The landmark book series Slott och herresaten i Sverige (transl. Castles and Manor Houses in Sweden), published in 1966-1971 by Allhems forlag, is still today considered the most important art historical reference work on Swedish manor buildings and country houses. The 18 volumes seem to present a near complete picture of the nation's rich heritage of manor buildings, combining the comprehensive and topographically organized guide book with the thoroughness of the architectural monograph. This paper will address the more problematic aspects of the book series, its critical role in the writing of a Swedish architectural history and in shaping a national country house narrative. While each volume provides an authoritative and concise overview of the history, ownership and stylistic development of the most significant manor buildings in the province - their architecture, interiors, gardens and collections - the presentation with its general descriptions, formal analysis and neutral tone omits a more in-depth analysis of these complex environments as well as underlying social, political and economic aspects. The descriptions have, in a sense, been working against the depth of historical understanding and the identification of more complex networks. As a consequence, the Swedish manor house is presented as a continuous and self-contained "treasure house", with the critical perspectives and broader European context very seldom present in the characterizations.

    The Umeå Pantry was a five-week long public art event held in Umeå, Sweden, aimed at making concerns about food production public and supporting local communities interested in food related practices.

    The event consisted of a series of performances where participant communities were invited to a dialogue on food concerns and practices in the region. The performances took the form of communal activities such as food harvesting, cooking, workshops, debates and demonstrations.

    The making of the art event highlights the practice of creating forms for engagement and participation of disparate communities around social issues.

    In the broader picture, this project contributes to the understanding of community participatory design and design for social innovation.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper is about the making of Umeå Pantry, a public participatory art festival performance on matters of concern regarding local food production. Participatory projects have been criticized for the way that researchers harness the creative outputs of collaborative work while safeguarding the underlying power structures. In addressing such critique this project focused on design’s relational and socio-political form rather than the value-added object of design. We argue that a public orientation, as in the case of Umeå Pantry, involves a critical enquiry and reflexive approach, which goes beyond participatory design within institutional boundaries and that there is a need for informal tactics to navigate this open public space. Thus, the paper argues that public participatory design needs to rethink its sensibilities and aim for a greater emphasis on the relational and socio-political underpinnings of a project. Articulating notions such as an open program, movement, relational exchanges and infrastructure, we are trying to find out more about what it takes to prototype new participatory design practices engaging with public matters of concern.

    Industrial design has had a certain character because it was called into being in order to serve new forms of production and consumption. Now, design (research) is being called on to “frame and address the societal problems that face us” and “shape our lives in more responsible, meaningful, and open ways”. This means addressing complex, large-scale, non-local (but locally manifested) challenges. But design—particularly when it has aspirations of being democratic and participatory is typically highly local and situated.

    The aim of this conversation is to speculate about future articulations, practices, and contexts of postindustrial design (research), and in the process to prototype the inclusive, rich, realistic yet hopeful discourse among passionate partial perspectives that is necessary to support it. This is a process of developing our ‘response-abilities’—our ‘collective capacity to respond’ as we face what challenges and calls on us to act.

    De senaste decennierna har det blivit allt tydligare att utbudet på bostadsmarknaden inte matchar efterfrågan. Främst den rådande bristen på bostäder, men också för de bostäder som alla slåss om i huvudsak är byggda utifrån hur Sverige såg ut för 40–50 år sedan. Dagens familjer och deras behov ser inte lika dana ut som när bostäderna byggdes. Bostadsmarknaden måste följa samhällets utveckling och vara villiga att satsa på nytänkande. I mitt examensarbete vill jag visa på hur ett sådant boende skulle kunna se ut.

    Abstract [en]

    This study examines the work of art in the underground station Kungsträdgården in Stockholm and discusses the observers interpretation of the art in the station. When the artist Ulrik Samuelson got his commission to shape the station he was influenced by Marcel Duchamp and the concept art. Two themes were integrated in the work of art, the actual culture life and the palace called Makalös, which was situated just above the currant station, three hundred years ago. The station was built in two stages.

    The first part was opened in 1977 and the second part in 1987. Panofsky´s iconographic working method has been used in this essay. Accurate observations of the work of art and relevant literature studies are described in the study. Samuelson’s work has a lot of references to currant culture, social and political life of the time as well as so called ready-mades from Stockholm and artefacts from Makalös.

    The observers understanding of the work of art is dependent on for example the observers age and knowledge. The parts that were present thirty years ago were known by people at that time but are hardly known by anybody nowadays. The modern young observers may not interpret every part of the numerous things and symbols although this will probably not prevent them to enjoy the work of art as a highly artistic production.
