    Abstract [en]

    The investigation was initiated because of the high workload of the sellers and, additionally, because the Tunadal sawmill has received low ratings in customer surveys. Thus,  two main approaches are adopted here,  the first being to investigate which of the three methods  of working, namely, market divided flow organization, function organizationand flow organization with collaboration, proves to be the most beneficial. The second is to investigate whether there is an available method to ease the daily work. A literature review has been made in order to determine more efficient ways for the sellers to work in the Tunadal sawmill. During the investigation, an in-depth investigation into the total quality management using a balanced scorecard as a management tool was conducted. To identify the current problems, interviews and workshops were conducted with the department members. A customer survey was sent to the customers in order to obtain some indication in relation to their opinions. The results showed that there are many unnecessary working operations such as control, duplication of work and problem solving. Communication between the various departments and individuals proved to sometimes be poor.  A major reason for the sellers’ problems regarding workload was due to the unavailability of goods on the discharge date. Many benefits are associated with the collaborative flow organization as this increases the holistic view and can assist in relation to communication. The function based method of working would, however, lead to greater isolation of the functions in the business. Very little work regarding identification of problems that occur in the processes exists and focus on working with improvements is limited. It would be advantageous to work with total quality management using the balanced scorecard as a management tool in the flow organization based on cooperation as this also promotes the holistic approach.

    Abstract [en]

    In today’s dynamic business environment, a key challenge for all companies is to make adaptive adjustments to their manufacturing strategy. This study demonstrates the competitive priorities of manufacturing strategy in hydro-power case company to evaluate the level of sustainable competitive advantage and also to further analyze how business strategies are aligned with manufacturing strategies. This research is based on new holistic analytical evaluation of manufacturing strategy index, sense and respond, and sustainable competitive advantage models. These models help to describe, evaluate, and optimize resource allocation to meet the performance requirements in dynamic decision making. Furthermore, these models evaluate operational competitiveness for manufacturing strategies according to the multi-criteria priority. The results show that the adjustments of competitive priorities in manufacturing strategies by implementing the proposed holistic analytical models are helpful in strategically managing business operations. The discussion derives the most critical attributes in business operations while alignment of resource allocation with competitive priorities help to strategically focus those attributes. In conclusion, we argue that resource allocation and manufacturing strategies have become the most important capabilities in a business environment where companies focus to get a sustainable competitive advantage.

    Abstract [en]

    Today Delta Terminal AB rents a warehouse, the expenses of the warehouse are much higher than the income and therefore Delta Terminal Ab wants to relocate the warehouse to a different building that they own. The current warehouse is approximately 7900 𝑚2and the intended local is 6400𝑚2. Because of the differ-ence in size between the two warehouses, it is important that the products are placed so that the bearing surface is filled as much as possible without damag-ing the products. To reduce the driving distance in the warehouse the products are placed after a categorization technique called double ABC-analysis, where the delivery frequency is the main factor. To verify that the products fit in the warehouse calculations were made on the fill rate, a localization and product placement were also made based on the categorization. The information is taken from a literature review, scientific articles, previous studies, discussions with the staff at Delta Terminal AB and from each client who has a product in the warehouse. The study shows that the products Delta Terminal AB has in stock will not fit in the intended warehouse and that Delta Terminal AB needs at least 48 m2 to store leftover products.

    Abstract [en]

    A vanguard project is the firm’s entrepreneurial vehicle for exploring opportunities, creating new products, services or markets. This type of projects requires flexibility and innovation to thrive. In this regard, a creative approach to project management is proposed for the successful execution of such projects. This creative approach is summarized in a framework that consists of two main components – flexible planning and creative climate.

    The Central Services project, a vanguard in telecommunications, was used to benchmark the creative project management framework to the current project management methodology of the IT department of TIWS. Results show that there is a gap between the framework and the status quo. Moreover, the Central Services project is not efficiently and effectively managed, therefore, resulting to project delays which consequentially lead to negative company revenues. This reality strengthens the proposition that vanguard projects should be managed differently; hence, the birth of creative project management.

    One of major concerns in gas turbine industry is to reduce emissions.  Tow kind of approaches could be identified in the industry to reduce emissions, namely Primary Emission Reduction approach and Secondary Emission Reduction approach. The primary approach concerns emission prevention in combustion, while secondary approach is all about emission cleanup before releasing to the atmosphere.

    Combustion flame temperature highly influences on emissions specially NOx formation.  NOx emission is lower when the combustor operates close to lean flammability limit. Incorporating catalyst to combustor is one of methods to extend flammability limit.  Heat and Power Division at KTH-Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden has developed a test facility to test performances of catalyst in combustion.

    The combustion test facility available at Heat & Power Davison at KTH, consists of high pressure air compressor and air flow control system, air preheating unit and control system, fuel flow control system, combustor unit, and exhaust gas analyzer system. But lack of proper user interface to control and monitor the operation of the test facility through a computer work station was a major concern from experimenters.

    The purpose of the thesis work is to design and construction of supervisory control and data acquisition system for the full scale catalytic combustion test facility.  Labview 2012 is used as the main platform for implementing data acquisition and control system for the test facility. Thermocouples, pressure transducer signals, air flow meter signal are connected to Keithley 2701 data acquisition system and then connected to the computer. Fuel flow controllers are directly connected to the computer via serial port. Air flow control actuator signal is given through ADAM digital to analogue converter.

    Developed GUI is more convenient for users in terms of easy control of air flow, fuel flow and gas sampling probe systems, and monitoring of temperature, pressure measurements and exhaust gas species systems. And also GUI provides web interface to select correct conversion factor, and also to view live data recording. The developed GUI can be accessed through online to monitor the operation.

    The occupational environment in preschool is becoming increasingly important. Occupational injury statistics show an increased incidence of illness among employees in education, health and care. Before action can be taken to improve the working environment, a careful assessment must be made and an action plan created. To include all possible components requires a comprehensive approach. Mapping of the physical work in Hudiksvall Municipality at all preschools provides a means by which to get an overall picture of risk areas within the preschool staff work environment.

    The aim of this work is to describe how the risk assessment model was developed and used with the ambition that it can be used in other municipalities. The model has been tested in Hudiksvall, on two occasions, in 2005 and 2010. The findings from the survey in 2010 are reported here and a comparison with 2005 is made.

    The risk assessment model is based on a survey with open questions for preschool staff combined with observation and assessment of ergonomics and safety engineer of 11 risk areas within the physical environment of the pre-school.

    The results of the survey give a clear picture of current health risks and can be used as a basis for the development of pre-school activities as well as improved maintenance of the municipal buildings. The results have also been communicated to the individual pre-schools to demonstrate their particular areas of risk.

    The combination of survey and professional assessment of several risk areas has been shown to enable a quick identification of possible causes of illness among pre-school staff. To report both positive and negative environmental factors has been an advantage. The clear method of reporting has facilitated decision-making on what if any actions to take. There is a continuing need to develop this and other instruments for the work environment survey of schools, health and social care.

    I dagens affärssamhälle är utbytet av vanliga visitkort i papper enormt. Det är utan tvekan det ledande sättet för människor som träffas första gången att utbyta information i en affärsrelation. Det finns brister gällande uppföljning och hantering av vanliga visitkort och projektgruppen började då fundera på alternativ till pappersvisitkorten.

    I dagens samhälle flyttas alltmer teknik till mobiltelefoner. En mobiltelefon kan idag användas till allt från att göra bankärenden till att läsa tidningen på nätet, vilket för 15 år sedan skulle låta helt orimligt. Det dyker dagligen upp nya mobilapplikationer som ska underlätta och effektivisera vardagen på något sätt och marknaden är enorm. På denna snabbt växande marknad har projektgruppen valt att ta fram ett koncept som de kallar Meetia.

    Meetia är i huvudsak en mobilapplikation framtagen för att trådlöst utbyta digitala visitkort och förenkla bokning av möten genom att synka användarnas kalendrar. Applikationen har även funktioner som låter användaren enkelt och snabbt skapa nya visitkort direkt i telefonen.

    Projektgruppen har även tagit fram en kompletterande hemsida till mobilapplikationen där användare har möjlighet att lagra och hantera de digitala visitkort som mottagits, för att sedan genom smarta sökfunktioner enkelt hitta de visitkort man söker.

    Meetia kommer vara ett optimalt verktyg för att skapa nya kontakter då hela vägen från första kontakt till möte eller lagring av visitkort enkelt sköts med konceptet Meetia. Meetia kommer framför allt inrikta sig mot mässor där visitkort är vanligt förekommande och mängder affärskontakter skapas. För att nå ut till de stora mässorna i Sverige kommer applikationen finnas med mässfunktioner.

    In order to produce x-ray mirrors the Thin Film Physics group at IFM grows Cr/Sc multilayers, with a typical thickness of the individual layers in the range 5-20 Å, and with as many periods as possible (a few hundred).

    The quality of the multilayer interfaces is crucial for their performance as mirrors. For thick layers poly-crystalline multilayers form with an interface quality that is too poor for the use as x-ray mirrors. For thinner layers, however, amorphous layers are formed with a much better quality of the interface.

    The goal of this project was to understand the formation of amorphous multilayers. Unfortunately it is impossible with the present day's theoretical tools to determine the structure of amorph interfaces. It is also impossible to calculate the interface structure for elements with large mismatch in size.

    So we have to construct interface models that are both simple and based on physical arguments.

    Abstract [en]

    An experiment for estimating Moho depth is carried out based on satellite altimetryand topographic information using the Vening Meinesz–Moritz gravimetric isostatichypothesis. In order to investigate the possibility and quality of satellite altimetry in Mohodetermination, the DNSC08GRA global marine gravity field model and the DTM2006 globaltopography model are used to obtain a global Moho depth model over the oceans with aresolution of 1 x 1 degree. The numerical results show that the estimated Bouguer gravity disturbancevaries from 86 to 767 mGal, with a global average of 747 mGal, and the estimatedMoho depth varies from 3 to 39 km with a global average of 19 km. Comparing the Bouguergravity disturbance estimated from satellite altimetry and that derived by the gravimetricsatellite-only model GOGRA04S shows that the two models agree to 13 mGal in root meansquare (RMS). Similarly, the estimated Moho depths from satellite altimetry andGOGRA04S agree to 0.69 km in RMS. It is also concluded that possible mean dynamictopography in the marine gravity model does not significantly affect the Moho determination.

    The circular economy (CE) has been identified as a catalyst in sustainable development and economic growth that has the potential to move society from the traditional linear model of resource consumption in the form of take-make-waste to an innovative circular model in the form of reduce-reuse-recycle.

    Transitioning from the linear economy to the CE requires changes in four areas: material and product design, business models, global reverse networks and enabling business environments. This study considers the financing needs of CE companies as a result of business model changes.

    Through the case studies of Ragn-Sellsföretagen AB and Inrego AB, analysed with secondary data from ING Bank and primary data collected through semi-structured interviews with the case companies, this research sheds more light on the financing needs of circular economy companies and how they are financed.

    Findings from this research suggest that the financing needs of circular economy companies depend on the value proposition of the company. In accordance with the pecking order of capital structure, all financing needs of the companies studied are financed from internal sources, particularly retained earnings before external debt financing is accessed. Findings indicate the willingness of banks to finance circular economy companies.

    The results of this research suggest that the circular economy companies studied do not need financial support from the government or its agencies to succeed even though favourable laws are welcomed. They report that their long-term success depends on their ability to remain innovative in their business models, aligning with Schumpeter’s creative destruction model.

    Prosumer with demand-response:Distribution network impact and mitigation2013Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This report is the result from a project funded by ELFORSK done by STRI. Theproject is studying the effects the introduction of so called “prosumers”(customers with own production) and electrical vehicles will have on differenttypes of networks. Four different cases are studied: covering urban and ruralareas with different types of customers.In the urban areas the power through the transformer will be the limitingfactor. The major impact in the cases studied is from the introduction ofproduction from photovoltaics at the customer-side of the meter. This willresult in an introduction of surplus due to production which in one case led toan increase of the absolute power through the transformer with more than30%, which resulted in transformer overloading.In the rural areas the voltage drop or rise will be the limiting factor. The casesstudied had already high voltage drops even in the base cases. In the casestudies it was seen that the voltage drop could be slightly reduced whenintroducing more local production, but the production also led to that voltagerise could appear. As a result the interval of the voltage variations wasincreased, which in turn leads to difficulties with designing the network suchthat neither overvoltage nor undervoltage occurs.Introducing control algorithms had a very positive effect on reducing the netproduction from the photovoltaics. Using both hard and soft curtailment madeit possible to remove all overcurrents or overvoltages. Using hard curtailment,where all production is turned off during overcurrent or overvoltage, leadshowever to a large reduction in energy from renewable energy sources.Therefore soft curtailment should as much as possible be used.The control algorithms studied for reducing the net consumption had a morelimited effect and even resulted in an increase of the maximum netconsumption. When trying to reduce the net consumption during an overload,the reason of the overload could only be moved in time and not removed as inthe case of reducing the net production. And since often the period duringwhich the power exceeds the limit is longer than the number of hours possibleto move the energy, sometimes moving the energy had an adverse effect.The model used for controlling the net consumption needs furtherdevelopment, but it is still possible to draw the conclusion that this type ofcontrol offers only limited possibilities for mitigating overload or undervoltage.The effects of introducing prosumers and more electrical vehicles as defined inthe selected cases did not show any alarming results in this study. However,studies to learn more about the possible consequences of changes atcustomer-side are important to be able to handle the impact of such changeson the network.Further future studies needed: database with load and production data;improved control algorithms; demonstration project; experience from othercountries and studies on reactive power compensation.

    There is an on-going paradigm shift in manufacturing, in which modern manufacturing industry is changing towards global manufacturing networks and supply chains. This will lead to the flexible usage of different globally distributed, scalable and sustainable, service-oriented manufacturing systems and resources. Combining recently emerged technologies, such as Internet of Things, Cloud Computing, Semantic Web, service-oriented technologies, virtualisation and advanced high-performance computing technologies, with advanced manufacturing models and information technologies, Cloud Manufacturing is a new manufacturing paradigm built on resource sharing, supporting and driving this change.

    It is envisioned that companies in all sectors of manufacturing will be able to package their resources and know-hows in the Cloud, making them conveniently available for others through pay-as-you-go, which is also timely and economically attractive. Resources, e.g. manufacturing software tools, applications, knowledge and fabrication capabilities and equipment, will then be made accessible to presumptive consumers on a worldwide basis.

    Cloud Manufacturing has been in focus for a great deal of research interest and suggested applications during recent years, by both industrial and academic communities. After surveying a vast array of available publications, this paper presents an up-to-date literature review together with identified outstanding research issues, and future trends and directions within Cloud Manufacturing.

    The Master thesis explores the knowledge sharing that takes place during the requirement engineering phase of globally distributed information systems development. In recent years, due to globalization, information systems development activities have become increasingly distributed across different geographical locations. Requirement engineering is an important and knowledge intensive phase in the development of information systems. Requirement engineering is the process of identifying, analyzing, documenting, validating and managing the requirements of a system. Effective and efficient knowledge sharing during the requirement engineering is vital for the successful development of information systems. However, the global distribution of the stakeholders has affected knowledge sharing during requirement engineering in various ways making it more challenging.

     

    Drawing on the theories of knowledge sharing within the field of information systems, this interpretive research study aims at exploring stakeholders’ perceptions about the challenges met during the knowledge sharing in requirement engineering phase of globally distributed information systems development projects. More specifically, this Master thesis explores the perceived challenges and generates a list of suggestions to overcome the challenges by conducting qualitative semi-structured interviews among the key stakeholders, both customers and business analysts.

     

    The findings indicate that the knowledge sharing is influenced by challenges such as cultural differences, language barriers, communication issues, coordination issues arising from multiple stakeholders, time difference and difficulty in sharing tacit knowledge in the globally distributed settings. Participants’ suggestions for overcoming these challenges include cultural trainings, kick off meetings, language trainings, use of translator, face-to-face communication and interaction, video conferencing, scheduling important meetings in the common suitable timings, identification of the main stakeholders, having a mediator and making close observations with face-to-face interactions.

    The aim of this study is to investigate the role Business Intelligence (BI) can play in government and more specifically at the municipality level. The study aims to investigate how data collected from a municipality Contact Center can be leveraged with the help of a BI solution. The study focuses on the Contact Center at Järfälla Kommun (municipality) and investigates whether a BI implementation can help to realize more effective planning, resource allocation and improved services and e-services. Municipality Contact Centers are becoming an increasingly popular precedent providing municipal residents with a centralized service where they can make inquiries, provide information, lodge complaints or commend actions related to activities within the specific municipality. BI can turn raw data into concrete figures and reports, map patterns and trends and support effective decision making. It can also however be costly and difficult to integrate and face resistance due to perceived complexity. This paper aims to take such notions into consideration and investigate the feasibility of implementing such a solution in the context of a municipality Contact Center.

    This paper identifies various benefits and drawbacks from literature which are then modeled into a SWOT framework. In addition, semi-structured interviews are utilized in this study and targeted at stakeholders knowledgeable in the Contact Center, BI, or both. Findings from the SWOT framework will be measured against the findings from the interviews and an analysis of correlations between the two sources will be investigated.

    This doctoral thesis is about controlling the combustion timing of the combustion concept Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition, HCCI, by means of variable valve timings.

    The HCCI research usually is regarded to have started in Japan during the later part of the 1970´s. The world of HCCI has since grown and HCCI is of today researched worldwide. Of particular interest from a Swedish point of view is that Lund Institute of Technology has emerged as one of the world leading HCCI laboratories.

    The idea with HCCI is to combine the Otto and Diesel engine. As in an Otto engine the charge is premixed but as in a Diesel engine the operation is unthrottled and the compression heat causes the ignition. The combustion that follows the ignition takes place homogeneously and overall lean. The result is ultra low NOx and particulate emissions combined with high total efficiency. A difficulty with the HCCI-concept is that it only works in a narrow area and that there is no direct way to control the Start Of Combustion, SOC. Out of this follows that timing/phasing of the combustion is one of the main difficulties with HCCI combustion concepts. This is particularly emphasized during transient operation and calls for feedback control of the combustion timing.

    This work investigates one method, the variable valve timing, to achieve feedback control of the combustion phasing. From the work it can be concluded that the variable valve timing can control the combustion phasing during engine transients. In order to improve the performance a non-linear compensation from ignition delay to valve timings has been suggested, incorporated in a control structure and tested in engine test. The engine test has been performed in a single cylinder engine based on a Scania truck engine. The speed range from 500 to 1750 rpm and the load range 1.26 and 10.5 bar of netIMEP has been covered with fair transient performance.

    Abstract [en]

    A game could have thousands of sound assets, to fit all of those files to a manageable storage space it is often necessary to reduce the size of the files to a more manageable size so they have to be compressed. One type of sound that often takes up a lot of disc space (because there is so much of it) is dialogue. In the popular game engine Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) the the audio is compressed to Ogg Vorbis and has as default the bit rate is set to 104 kbit/s. The goal of this paper is to see if untrained listeners find dialogue compressed in Ogg Vorbis 104 kbit/s good enough for dialogue or if they prefer higher bit rates. A game was made in UE4 that would act as a listening test. Dialogue audio was recorded with a male and a female voice-actor and was compressed in UE4 in six different bit rates. 24 untrained subjects was asked to play the game and identify the two out of six robots with the dialogue audio they thought sound the best. The results show that the subjects prefer the higher bit rates that was tested. The results was analyzed with a chi-squared test which showed that the null-hypothesis can be rejected. Only 21% of the answers were towards UE4s default bit rate of 104 kbit/s or lower. The result suggest that the subjects prefer dialogue in higher bit rates and UE4 should raise the default bit rate.

    Abstract [en]

    Our aim is to investigate and evaluate the efficiency of crisis management in European aviation, and to recommend enhancements. To fulfill this, we mapped the current crisis management plans and created a fictive scenario where a cyber-attack shut down the power at five of the major airports in Europe. Air traffic in Europe was reconstructed to a chosen day; the 16th of September 2013, and the reconstructed traffic situation was used in the scenario. We also created a model, for the purpose of showing the effect of a cut in time for the steps in the crisis management plan may have on the traffic waiting to depart at the closed airports. When using these means, we could implement the crisis management plans on the fictive scenario and make changes to the plans for a new implementation. The existing crisis management plans were compared to the modified plans made by us, and it was found that usage of a common platform for the different stakeholders involved in the crisis could improve the efficiency of the crisis management.

    Understanding how innovation and renewal occurs in an industry is important for how to manage technical development for individual companies. It is also important for creating a beneficial industrial context for renewal, from both a political and an industrial perspective, in which new solutions can arise and spread through the involvement of several actors of the industry. How innovation and renewal occurs in the construction industry in Sweden is however viewed differently. One challenge that has been pointed to is that most of the work performed in the construction industry is organized in projects, which in turn should affect how innovation and renewal can be achieved.

     

    The aim of this thesis is to provide an understanding of how the project organizing in the industry affects innovation and renewal. This is executed through a case study of the construction of Skandionkliniken, a proton therapy clinic, and by using an industrial network theory that challenges the traditional view of how innovation is achieved. One important understanding drawn from this study is that renewal is created in the interface between companies and their resources. The kinds of innovation and renewal that can take place in the projects highly rely on technical interdependencies and organizational features of the involved actors. Three conclusions are drawn from this study; firstly, innovation and renewal in the construction industry occurs gradually across projects, secondly, the type of innovation that occurs is not what is expected from a traditional point of view, and thirdly, therefore it is not necessarily obvious when or how it takes place, which has implications both for policy and company management.

    Abstract [en]

    Stovepipes, or also called silos, appear in many different organizations and sectors and contribute to problems when employees or managers tend to look more to their own, or the individual departments, objectives rather than to the organizations. The purpose of this study was to identify different communicative factors that promote stovepipes in order to further identify the most critical factor to disarm. A case study has been done at a selected company, with a stovepipe structure, in order to achieve the purpose of the study. The case study has included interviews and observations to identify different problem areas which then have been compared with three communicative factors identified in previous studies. The factor that had the most connections to the problem areas have been considered the most critical factor. The result of the study indicates that “A lack of understanding each other's work” is the most critical factor in stovepipe structures and that it can be prevented by following five recommendations: bring up positive collaboration continually, raise problems with each other instead of with others, identify different communication paths in and between the departments, implement a long-term model for preventing stovepipes and set up workshops between the involved departments. The conclusion of the study is that stovepipes create several undesirable effects in the organization but that the efforts to counter these problems do not have to be complicated. Following five small steps into a better collaboration and communication can be enough to be on your way to a better organizational structure.

    Abstract [en]

    The overall purpose of this project is to devise improved quality acceptance procedures to examine quality characteristics of utility poles at the factory of the supplier (FAT) and on-site upon receipt by the customer (SAT). To that end, the thesis draws upon available standards, literature, and industry practices regarding wood, fiberglass and steel poles. As far as the design of the research, a single case study of a major power company was chosen. Then, a data collection plan was developed in order to build upon the existing knowledge found in the literature, and upon the data that can be collected from three of the Company’s suppliers, in addition to the Technical Research Institute of Sweden (SP). Documents’ analysis, interviews, observations, and a survey were the tools of that plan. It was found that criteria, inspection and test methods of wood poles are all sufficiently covered in the standards and the literature; for wood is the most commonly used material for utility poles. Next, in coverage of research, are the steel poles; while there is currently no standard that covers fiberglass utility poles. Indeed, quality characteristics, criteria, and acceptance procedures can altogether form parts of a sustainable solution, as long as the quality is managed as a process whether at the Company’s end or at the fabrication sites; that is especially true if there is some form of backward partnership between the Company and its suppliers.

    Abstract [en]

    This research presents an analysis of the European Telecommunication strategic environment with particular focus on the three macro-changes which have been influencing the recent history of such industry. These are, first of all, the shift from a government-controlled market to a privatized market. Second, the introduction of price limitations - called Eurotariff - which are supposed to regulate the mobile traffic throughout Europe. Finally, the constant growth of data and internet traffic demand, compared to the voice traffic demand, mainly due to the success of OTTs (Over-the-Tops) and the introduction of NGN (Next-Generation Network) applications and software. Such changes have increased the competition in an industry which was organized in monopolies and are forcing the companies to change, following the different customers' needs. Throughout the essay, a case study about Telefónica has been developed: after a presentation of the company and of Telefónica's deregulation process, the consequences of the environment analysis will be defined and, finally, some strategic actions will be proposed in order to adapt to the new strategic environment. The methodology which has been followed consists in a research on the models existing in literature designed to analyze the strategic environment. The best ones have been used and applied to the real case, involving Telefónica: the findings obtained have then been considered the basis to define the strategic actions. The purpose of the paper is twofold: first of all to offer an understanding of the telecommunications business with a particular focus on the Eurotariff, OTTs and NGN phenomena; second to show how a strategic environment can be effectively studied, focusing on the changes that characterize the industry, and how the consequences can be deduced. The information coming from this type of studies is very important for a company to understand what to change in order to adapt to a new context and achieve better performances.

    Abstract [en]

    The public concern for sustainability issues is ever increasing whilst the trust in corporations is decreasing. CEOs now see sustainability concern and compliance as an important component in retaining their competitive advantage and regaining the trust of their surrounding community. For these reasons it is important to find new manners of uniting societal improvement with business, requiring new forms of competencies. This study has investigated what sustainability education is actually central to the industrial engineering profile, as well as what of this is then covered in the programs.

    The study involved two phases. The first involved interviewing experts as to what was central for these engineers to learn, resulting in a content list. The second phase involved mapping the instances of this content in the five largest industrial engineering programs (covering circa 74% of these students) as well as the associated challenges to broaching this content. The first phase was primarily qualitative whilst the second phase was largely quantitative, though each data point consisted of a qualitative interview.

    Five key insights can be drawn from the study regardless of normative stand-point. 1) The sustainability topics that were deemed relevant cover a vast area of disciplines and aspects. 2) There is a skewedness in the content covered, favouring the environmental aspects. 3) There is a lack of integrative instances where the knowledge from different sources and perspectives is synthesized. 4) The key challenges revolve around concept definition and communication. 5) The normativity, interconnectedness and pedagogics contribute with uncertainty and complexity in the assessment of sustainability education.

    The study is finalized with a synthesis of the various insights to arrive at the conclusion that having sustainable business practice as the aim of the programs, establishing common content goals and employing active learning approach would circumvent many of the perceived challenges as well as align the programs with the need of the industry.

    This study contributes with deeper understanding of the sustainability education required and provided to industrial engineering students in Sweden. As such the study has practical applications for the programs studied. The theoretical implications of this study lie in the empirical data achieved regarding the topics of relevance to these engineers, showing high levels of agreement with current literature, as well as the perceived challenges to broaching this content in the current curricula. Furthermore it provides empirical data as to the sustainability education received at different programs.

    The transport that uses multiple modes of transportation called Intermodal transport. Due of the advantages of intermodal transport offers, the market for intermodal transport has become increasingly important. The benefits can be both environmentally and economically. This terminal is the destination where intermodal transport takes place. The purpose of a terminal is to combine two different modes of transport. This can lower the total cost of transportation and reduce environmental pollution. To get a successful intermodal terminals there are a few factors that should be considered. One of these factors is the primary services and incidental services terminus offer.

     

    The purpose of this study is to examine the ancillary services that can be applied to an intermodal terminal in order to increase revenues and attractiveness of the facility. To answer the research questions I interviewed four different operators in intermodal terminals in Sweden. In addition there are also two interviews were carried out with the existing operator in Sundsvall intermodal terminal and the operator of the new intermodal terminal. The purpose of these two interviews was to see what the operators have the opportunity or plan and how it works in Sundsvall existing intermodal terminal in the present day. Literature studies that I used in this study have been covered by previous surveys, reports and books. The purpose of literary studies was to identify intermodal terminals and the new services that can be used on the terminal.

     

    The results of this study gave a very good picture of these ancillary services that can be applied in Sundsvall new intermodal terminal to increase the terminal's revenues and attractiveness. Examples of these services, repair factories of trailers and containers, refueling station in connection with the intermodal terminal, cross-docking, by scrolling with the electric locomotives. Besides these services, there are other factors that should be taken into consideration in order to increase revenues and attractiveness of intermodal terminal. These are the technologies that are used in intermodal terminal, IT support, security and location of the intermodal terminal.

    Traditional methods of project management are not appropriate for complex projects anymore. Since projects are becoming increasingly complex and uncertain, interaction between activities and resources is growing in ways not considered by these methods. Nowadays, managers need more agile project management methods that are able to recognize and deal with uncertainty and to produce the expected results. Lean project management, the most recent approach of lean methodology, appears as an alternative approach capable of dealing with complexity and uncertainty. The latest investigations in the field show that traditional methods are still adequate for simple projects, while lean methods are more appropriate for complex projects.

    This thesis aims to investigate the nature of lean project management and to examine project risk management processes so that managers can assess the complexity of projects before their beginning and decide which method to apply in order to manage them.

    The increasing globalisation of the market is followed by increased competition between organisations. Therefore it becomes more important to create products with high customer value. To be able to create customer value, deep understanding of the customers’ needs must be obtained by employees, shared between them and transformed into products. Further consequences of globalisation are increasing differences between customers’ needs, which results in demand for customisable and flexible products.The purpose of this study was to analyse how organisations can create more customer value through increased knowledge integration. The focus was on how knowledge that already resides within a globally dispersed organisation can be integrated during the product development process.This study showed that customer value is created throughout the product development process by integrating the knowledge held by R&D and internal stakeholders. Different types of value are created at different phases in the product development process. One important finding is that different parts of the augmented value are created throughout the entire product development process. Since employees obtain different knowledge depending on which customer they interact with, it is important to utilise knowledge from a large number of employees with different roles and in different countries. Hence, the significance of knowledge integration must be disseminated and understood across the organisation. After completing the product development process additional customer value is created by the internal stakeholders’ who sell and implement the product, but it is during the product development process that the basis for their value creation is established.Knowledge needs to be integrated in a formalised, repeatable way, so that the R&D department can ensure that the right product is developed at the right time. Integration means that the tacit knowledge that resides within one employee is codified into an explicit form that can be exploited by more employees. Therefore, four steps must be performed and repeated iteratively to create and spread knowledge throughout the organisation. The first step includes communication by exchanging tacit knowledge. The second step entails documenting the knowledge, and the third step involves combining the knowledge residing in the organisations into one common knowledge system. The final step includes distributing the knowledge so that it recievess wide attention within the organisation. Several factors that have a negative impact on these four steps, and knowledge integration, need to be countered somehow. However, it was found that there are several mechanisms that facilitate knowledge integration, and most often the presence of several mechanisms at the same time had a better effect.

    This thesis is about furniture parquetry and various techniques. Parquetry can be describe as wooden, 2-dimensional patterns used to garnish furniture and other products. It is manufactured in thin veneer layer and applied to the surface. By using thin veneer we are able to minimize stresses in the material, which results in tight joints. In Europe, furniture parquetry is traditionally created by wood veneer pieces that has been formed and joined into a pattern. There are also other proven techniques developed during different stages in history and in different places in the world.

    In my thesis I describe some of those established techniques and some of my experiments in the subject. The report is based on literature studies, observations of movie clips, interviews and empirical practical studies. I have compared different techniques to see in what ways it is possible to rationalize the production of furniture parquetry. At the same time I wanted to try and develop a method that makes it possible to create parquetry patterns containing round shapes. In this way I hope to contribute to the development and modernization in the area.

    Syftet med detta examensarbete var att undersöka om det finns möjlighet att implementera en trådlöst instrumenterings kit från Emerson Rosemount Process AB på dagens styrsystem som finns på Siemens gasturbiner. En prototyp skapades som bygger på Siemens Simatic PCS-7 med en styrenhet och en switch. Där efter implementerades Emerson Wireless gateway och två trådlösa instrument. I examanearbetet skapades även en logik som hanterar kommunikationen mellan simatic och gateway. Modbus RTU och TCP/IP är kommunikationsprotokollet som användes under arbetet. En undersökning om den uppsättningen klarar av de atex (ATmosphères EXplosibles )och sil (saftey integrity level ) krav gjordes, för att säkerställa om det finns möjligheter att implementera detta på dagens tillverkningsprocess. Utöver dessa kontrollerades om det råder för och nackdelar med den trådlösa allternativet inom IT-säkerhet, instrumentdiagnostik och störkänslighet.     Abstract [en]

    In this era of technology, there is a swift increase in the number of applications which operate at the Industrial Scientific Medical Band. The applications of this band ranges from home microwave oven to wireless local area networks (WLAN). Therefore, the design of antennas on this band is essential.

    This thesis work revolves around the detailed study and design of various antennas at 2.45 GHz. All the simulation of the antennas was performed using advanced design system (ADS). Microstrip antenna technology is commonly used in antenna design due to its advantages such as low-profile, small size and easy fabrication on printed circuit boards.

    Firstly, various antennas such as rectangular patch, square patch, dipole, inverted F and printed Yagi were designed using ADS and their different performance parameters such as input impedance matching, voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR), input reflection, and gain and directivity were discussed. Dipole antenna, inverted F and printed Yagi were fabricated on printed circuit board (PCB) to compare their measured and simulated results.

    At the end, a conclusion is drawn for different antennas based on their various performance parameters.

    The effects following ion irradiation of GaN-based devices are still limited. Here we present data on the photoluminescence (PL) emitted from InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well (MQW) structures, which have been exposed to 40 MeV I ion irradiation. The PL is reduced as a function of applied ion fluence, with essentially no PL signal left above 1011 ions/cm2. It is observed that even the ion fluences in the 109 ions/cm2 range have a pronounced effect on the photoluminescence properties of the MQW structures. This may have consequences concerning application of InGaN/GaN MQW’s in radiation-rich environments, in addition to defect build-up during ion beam analysis.

    Abstract [en]

    In order to detect the geo-hazards, different deformation monitoring networks are usually established. It is of importance to design an optimal monitoring network to fulfil the requested precision and reliability of the network. Generally, the same observation plan is considered during different time intervals (epochs of observation). Here, we investigate the case that instrumental improvements in sense of precision are used in two successive epochs. As a case study, we perform the optimisation procedure on a GPS monitoring network around the Lilla Edet village in the southwest of Sweden. The network was designed for studying possible displacements caused by landslides. The numerical results show that the optimisation procedure yields an observation plan with significantly fewer baselines in the latter epoch, which leads to saving time and cost in the project. The precision improvement in the second epoch is tested in several steps for the Lilla Edet network. For instance, assuming two times better observation precision in the second epoch decreases the number of baselines from 215 in the first epoch to 143 in the second one.

    En tecknad film skapad av Pennfilm med Per Åhlin, Alicja Björk och Lasse Persson som regissörer. Filmen består av tre historier av Astrid Lindgren med karaktärerna Emil och Ida i Lönneberga. Astrids egen röst används. 

    Filmen är producerad av Filmlance International AB och fick 8 miljoner i produktionsstöd från Svenska Filminstitutet. Den distribueras av SF Film och finns tillgänglig på flera plattformar. Första gången var biopremiär 25 december 2013. Den senaste plattformen var visning i SVT med påföljande tid tillgänglig i SVT Play under hösten 2016. Både tecknandet och inspelningen av musiken gjordes på ett äldre traditionellt sätt. D.v.s. alla bildrutor har tecknats för hand. Musiken har spelats in i akustisk studio under Georg Riedels ledning med hjälp musiker och musiktekniker. Till den större delen har musikernas insatser skett tillsammans och utan pålägg. Därefter har musiktekniker och Georg Riedel mixat materialet för filmmediet.

    För att få en djupare förståelse för hur yta kan frigöras och användas har en studie genomförts på Villa VIDA som idag inte har tillräckligt med fri yta för kapacitetsökning. När nuläget analyserades kunde det konstateras att lagerbildningar på produktionsyta och ett måleri var det som hindrade företaget från att expandera. Baserat på det nuvarande läget genererades två alternativa layouter. I det ena förslaget valdes outsourcing av måleriet för att frigöra ännu mer yta och få plats med en kapacitetsökning på 50 % istället för 25 % som hade blivit resultatet om måleriet bevarats. Åtgärder som frigjorde yta innebar reducering av antal lagringspunkter och minskade orderkvantiteter. Vid utvärdering blev resultatet att företaget bör satsa på förslaget där måleriet är outsourcat då detta bidrar med ekonomiska så väl som flödesrelaterade fördelar samtidigt som ytan används på ett effektivare sätt.

    In Sweden seven courts has been appointed to specialize in admiralty law cases. These cases are either civil or criminal cases with connection to shipping on Swedish territory.

    The objective was to examine and describe the admiralty law verdicts over time with focus on what types of cases, differences between courts and variation over time. The study focused on merchant shipping.

    Study of literature was chosen as method and with follow-up questions interviews were made with agencies and experts. The literature in this study was the 153 verdicts that were announced between 2009 and 2013.

    Of all verdicts collected were five civil cases and 148 criminal cases with 13 classifications. The largest difference between the courts was the sum of verdicts. A change over time could not be observed.

    Other conclusions that were made were that ships’ masters, that have the utmost responsibility, avoided prosecution when they were not present for the event of the prosecution.

    Profitable production demands continuously improved maintenance decision accuracy to reduce unplanned stoppages, prolong components/machines  life length and maintain production continuity. When CM, e.g. vibration level or oil temperature, value exceeds a warning level, it demands a clear understanding of what happened and how it will develop to avoid failures. It demands also reliable information, e.g. probability of failure, residual  life and when is the most profitable time for maintenance. Companies strive to reduce production cost through reducing non-value adding times, e.g. failures, for offering customers lower prices and generating additional competitive advantages. In this paper, a new tool (Prediction of Vibration and oil temperature, PreVib) for predicting the condition of a turbine, generator and gearbox is introduced,  discussed and tested. The solution offers a unique opportunity to achieve just in time dynamic and cost-effective maintenance by selecting the most profitable time for maintenance. PreVib is tested in a power plant. The major results: Failures can appreciably be reduced thanks the high precision of prediction ( + 90%), i.e. a negligible difference from the real measurement: PreVib does not demand extensive or additional data, and not replace available maintenance systems. The major conclusion is that applying PreVib, it is possible to reduce failures appreciably, prolong life length of components/equipment and perform profitable maintenance

    In this paper a sequential method for the selection of maintenance technique for mechanical systems is presented. It is based on technical knowledge concerning component failure mechanisms and failure causes. Classification of failures according to their consequences is stated. A modified version of failure modes, effects and criticality analysis is given and a way to identify significant components is discussed. Analysis of collected data is discussed and a method to identify a replacement level of a monitoring parameter is proposed. Criteria for the selection of a monitoring technique based on the intrinsic information of monitoring parameters are introduced. Finally, a decision rule for the selection of a suitable maintenance technique is suggested and a modified expression of the long run average cost per unit time is used as a distinguishing criterion between applicable strategies.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper a graphical method for the selection of a cost-effective monitoring technique is suggested. Also, a graphical method to estimate the level at which components should be replaced when using a cost-effective technique, i.e. threshold level, is proposed. These two methods are based on the concept of the Total Time on Test, TTT-plot on age and condition dependent replacement is discussed.

    Abstract [en]

    The cycle between two replacements based on condition monitoring is discussed. Models representing a condition dependent failure rate function reflecting the information in a monitoring parameter are suggested. For the selection of a cost-effective technique, a modified version of the Proportional Hazards Model, PHM, is proposed. Utilizing this modified model, it is possible to reveal the effect of monitoring parameters and operating conditions on the failure rate function. General comments on the application of the cost equation are given.

    Examensarbetet är utfört inom produktutveckling – konstruktion och omfattar 15 högskolepoäng. Arbetet utfördes på halvtid under perioden januari – juni 2013. Examensarbetet utfördes för       OJOP Sweden AB i Eskilstuna av en student på Mälardalens Högskola. Examensarbetet startades den 6/1 – 2013 vid ett uppstartsmöte då uppdraget togs emot av OJOP Sweden AB´s ägare Anders Larsson. Uppdraget var att konstruera om eller konstruera en produkt med samma huvudegenskaper som företagets batterikontakt QuickPower. Detta för att reducera tillverkningskostnaderna som upplevdes för höga från företagets sida. Definitionen av problemet gjordes genom att undersöka den befintliga produkten och dess konkurrenter men också andra föremål som fäster på olika sätt. Undersökningarna resulterade i kunskap om hur problemet tidigare lösts och gav inspiration till en mängd idéer som bearbetades mentalt vilket ledde till skisser.  De olika skisserna sågs redan från början som potentiella koncept och redovisades för OJOP Sweden AB som fick utrymme att ge respons på koncepten. Ett koncept som innan redovisningen visat sig vara det bästa i både Pugh´s matris och QFD valdes gemensamt ut och fortsattes med. Det gjordes en enkel prototyp av det framtagna konceptet vilket bevisade en mycket bra funktionsduglighet. Med detta noterat och testat gjordes CAD-modeller som utgick ifrån prototypens dimensioner. Den slutgiltiga konstruktionen består av 6 (gånger två) komponenter, en huvudkomponent (spiralfäste), en kabelplatta, två plastkåpor och två skruvar. Dessa bearbetas på olika sätt och monteras samman för att vara redo att användas när kunden plockar dessa ur förpackningen. I jämförelse med den nuvarande produkten QuickPower håller sig resultatet på en nivå som matchar QP. En nackdel är att den inte fäster lika hårt som QP men resultatets enkla användning och resursbesparing höjer produkten.

    In orthopaedic practice, fractures are usually stabilised with metal screws or rods. This is done in order to keep the fracture parts in place during the rather slow healing process. The healing time can potentially be reduced by local- or systemic treatment with different bone promoting drugs. In later years, lithium, otherwise used to treat bipolar disease, has shown promise to be such a drug.

     

    The aim of this master thesis was to find a way to coat metal bone screws with lithium and to characterise the coating. The coating was to be designed in such a way that it could release lithium to the surrounding bone tissue.

     

    Lithium chloride was incorporated into a titanate sol-gel and attached to silicon wafers and stainless steel screws by dip coating. Wafers were used for initial in vitro studies of how lithium changed coating characteristics. This was studied using ellipsometry, AFM and SEM. Lithium is most probably physisorbed and not incorporated into the network building up the sol-gel. Coating structure is changed as more lithium is incorporated. For large amounts of lithium, the nanoparticles normally formed when curing the sol-gel are inhibited. One effect of this is reduced bioactivity, seen as a reduced ability for calcium phosphate crystals to nucleate on the coating when immersed in simulated body fluid.

    Lithium release was investigated using AAS. Lithium is released from the coating, showing a burst effect. By changing the number of coating layers used, the release profile can be partly altered. The coating was also applied to screws, showing good attachment, and the lithium release profile was similar to the one seen from wafers.

    Finally, a screw model was used in rats to assess the effect of local lithium treatment from screws and systemic lithium treatment on fracture healing. In the model, a screw was inserted in tibia, mimicking a fracture. When the bone around the screw was healed, a pullout test was performed, giving information about the strength of the bone surrounding the screw. No significant difference could be found for either local- or systemic lithium treatment compared to control. However, when evaluating the strength of intact bone in a similar way, a positive effect of systemic lithium treatment could be seen. Therefore, it is still likely that lithium has a positive effect on bone and further studies are needed to fully evaluate its role in fracture healing.

    In power system planning and operation, accurate assessment of reliability worth is essential for making informed decisions. The accuracy of the reliability worth estimation is directly affected by the interruption cost model used in the analysis. Residential interruption costs vary with season, day of week and time of day, and can be difficult to handle because of their intangible characteristics. This paper develops a cost model for residential customers that includes the timing of the outage by modeling the underlying factors that give rise to the temporal variations in residential interruption costs. By considering the stochastic nature of the underlying factors, as for example outdoor temperature, the proposed model makes it possible to estimate the costs for an event that is extreme in other senses than having a long duration. Time sequential Monte Carlo simulations were applied to a test system in order to assess reliability worth. The results show that the commonly used customer damage function overestimates the reliability worth. By accounting for the timing of the outages a more realistic estimation of the interruption costs can be obtained.

    Alla är sig själv närmast. Och vi gör oftast som vi är vana att göra. Vi styrs av de normer och värderingar som har format oss - även om vi tror att vi är innovativa. Resultatet riskerar att bli lösningar som diskriminerar och begränsar. En stor utmaning är att förstå andra människors behov. Om vi kan använda ett normkritiskt perspektiv och se bortom våra egna ramar kan vi nå en större potential inom innovation. Men att förverkliga den potentialen är lättare sagt än gjort. Det krävs vad vi kallar normkreativitet. Normkreativitet bygger på en medvetenhet om att normer och värderingar kan begränsa och diskriminera. Men den kräver också ett analytiskt arbete att undersöka människors verkliga situation och djupliggande behov - och samtidigt ett kreativt arbete att omsätta kritik och kunskap i nya lösningar. NOVA innehåller konkreta verktyg och handfasta metoder för alla som vill skapa sådana normkreativa lösningar. Materialet är baserat på praktiskt erfarenhet och forskning från en mängd olika projekt och studier. Formatet är valt för att gynna kreativitet och samverkan. Fokus är på normer som diskriminerar, men egentligen är innehållet användbart i alla innovationssammanhang. All innovation handlar ju om att utmana normer.
