    Abstract [sv]

Towards sustainable business models from technology healthcare research2010Ingår i: International Journal of Computers in Healthcare (IJCIH), ISSN 1755-3199, Vol. 1, nr 1, s. 43-51Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

As demographic ageing impacts across the world, health and welfare organisations are seeking new paradigms of care that address people’s needs as well as being inherently more scalable than the incumbent processes and services. The aim of this paper is to describe the current situation in Europe with information on service provision, before signposting some possible new ways to develop sustainable business models that support care models. The paper uses a case study approach to examine the issues in the introduction of such business models, from a perspective of the translation of research proof of concepts into business services and from the perspective of developing innovations from research that address unmet or poorly considered needs of user. The paper shows how several innovative European projects are anticipating the need for service change and are designing their research outcomes to match the needs of service commissioners more fully. The conclusion discusses several different approaches before drawing together trands of the work and providing tentative recommendations on the way forward to develop new inclusive technology-enhanced services in health and social care.

How Hybrid IT Governance Mechanisms Influence Digital Transformation and Organizational Performance in the Banking and Insurance Industry of Indonesia2023Ingår i: Information Systems Development, Organizational Aspects and Societal Trends (ISD2023 Proceedings) / [ed] A. R. da Silva, M. M. da Silva, J. Estima, C. Barry, M. Lang, H. Linger, & C. Schneider, Association for Information Systems (AIS) , 2023, s. 1-12Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [sv]

IT Governance Mechanisms Influence on Digital Transformation: A Systematic Literature Review2021Ingår i: AMCIS 2021 Proceedings, Association for Information Systems (AIS) , 2021, s. 1-10Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Many organizations are concerned about growing their direct investments in digital technologies and going through a digital transformation (DT) that offers value creation opportunities. It has been found that IT governance (ITG) plays an important role in organizations' digital initiatives. Previous studies have identified ITG structures, processes, and relational mechanisms to increase the firms’ performance. However, the traditional ITG mechanisms might no longer be valid in this digital era. Unfortunately, few studies have investigated this area. Therefore, a systematic literature review was performed to identify the ITG mechanisms that influence DT. During the review process, 46 articles were selected from top-rank journals and conference proceedings and analyzed. The process revealed 28 ITG mechanisms that influence DT. The study contributes to both research and practice, providing researchers with the ITG mechanisms that influence DT and informing practitioners on which ITG mechanisms to focus on towards a successful DT.

IT Governance Mechanisms that Influence Digital Transformation: A Delphi Study in Indonesian Banking and Insurance Industry2022Ingår i: PACIS 2022 Proceedings / [ed] Association for Information Systems, Association for Information Systems (AIS) , 2022Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [sv]

An Instance Based Schema Matching Between Opaque Database Schemas2014Ingår i: 2014 4TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY AND TECHNOPRENEURSHIP (ICE2T), IEEE Computer Society, 2014, s. 177-182Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Schema matching is always needed amoung schemas of relational datasets in database integration applications. Heterogeneous database integration involves a significant role of schema matching Most of the previous solution to schema matching problem based on the identification of similarity between the columns names or by recognizing common domains in the data stored in the schemas. These approaches are not applicable on those datasets with unaligned schemas where the name of the columns in the schemas and the data in the columns are opaque. In this paper we proposed an instance based approach to find the matching between the schemas of heterogeneous datasets that share a common primary keys but it is unknown which columns are primary keys. The proposed approach consists of two main phases Row Similarity and Attribute Similarity. In the row similarity phase proposed approach determines all the pairs of rows among datasets that are representing same real world entity based on the same primary keys values. In attribute similarity phase, by comparing the data values within those similar pairs of rows our approach able to find the corresponding attributes. Different experiments are performed to validate proposed approach by using real world datasets. The results demonstrated the viability of the proposed approach.

Emerging Security Risks within Hybrid Datacenter Infrastructure : A Risk Assesment2016Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Datacenters are critical infrastructures in today’s information society, they have undergone significant transformation from their inception days within their underlying technological infrastructure. They are at the core of the cloud computing revolution which is changing business models on how organizations deal with their spending on IT infrastructure.Virtualization has been the disruptive force driving this transformation within the datacenter space and has enhancing efficiencies in terms of server load consolidation, resource provisioning, flexibility, and scalability, lower spend on buying equipment and improved power utilization efficiency. The transition phase has led to modern datacenters incorporating both the legacy traditional datacenter infrastructure with the latest ones that are based on fully virtualized solutions. Though this mix of infrastructures has improved resource utilization and consolidation, the flexibility and scalability aspect that they bring about ushers in new set of emerging security challenges to the modern datacenter. The contents of this research work present a comprehensive Risk Assessment to a set of recentlyidentified security risks extracted from the NIST vulnerability database, these risks are related tothe flexibility and scalability aspect of modern datacenters. The findings of this study show thatvirtualization techniques introduce a set of new security flaws at the Hypervisor level, SDN Controllers and Virtual network layers thus further exacerbating challenges in ServiceAvailability, Confidentiality and Data Integrity in modern datacenters. An EBIOS approach to risk assessment was utilized as the guiding methodology. Security recommendations according to security best practices were then proposed as remedial mitigation measures. Ascertaining risk is crucial component for decision makers and the findings of this thesis research work contribute to that by providing better insight to the emerging security risks in a hybrid infrastructure context. The noted findings have implications to security design considerations for prospective datacenter providers who intend to deploy modern hybrid datacenter infrastructure or those in the process of transition.

Situational ethics: Re-thinking approaches to formal ethics requirements for human-computer interaction2015Ingår i: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems - Proceedings, Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), 2015, s. 105-114Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Most Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers are accustomed to the process of formal ethics review for their evaluation or field trial protocol. Although this process varies by country, the underlying principles are universal. While this process is often a formality, for field research or lab-based studies with vulnerable users, formal ethics requirements can be challenging to navigate - A common occurrence in the social sciences; yet, in many cases, foreign to HCI researchers. Nevertheless, with the increase in new areas of research such as mobile technologies for marginalized populations or assistive technologies, this is a current reality. In this paper we present our experiences and challenges in conducting several studies that evaluate interactive systems in difficult settings, from the perspective of the ethics process. Based on these, we draft recommendations for mitigating the effect of such challenges to the ethical conduct of research. We then issue a call for interaction researchers, together with policy makers, to refine existing ethics guidelines and protocols in order to more accurately capture the particularities of such field-based evaluations, qualitative studies, challenging labbased evaluations, and ethnographic observations.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Eliciting Design Guidelines for Privacy Notifications in mHealth Environments2021Ingår i: Research Anthology on Privatizing and Securing Data / [ed] Information Resources Management Association, IGI Global, 2021, s. 1909-1928Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The possibilities of employing mobile health (mhealth) devices for the purpose of self-quantification and fitness tracking are increasing; yet few users of online mhealth services possess proven knowledge of how their personal data are processed once the data have been disclosed. Ex post transparency-enhancing tools (TETs) can provide such insight and guide users in making informed decisions with respect to intervening with the processing of their personal data. At present, however, there are no suitable guidelines that aid designers of TETs in implementing privacy notifications that reflect their recipients' needs in terms of what they want to be notified about and the level of guidance required to audit their data effectively. Based on an analysis of gaps related to TETs, the findings of a study on privacy notification preferences, and the findings on notifications and privacy notices discussed in the literature, this paper proposes a set of guidelines for the human-centred design of privacy notifications that facilitate ex post transparency.

SafeHome: A cross-platform mobile application that increases homes network security2022Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The Internet, considered the most fast-growing technology ever, is starting to arrive in everyone’s homes regularly. No longer just smartphones, computers, or tablets, now even refrigerators, washing machines, and other household appliances support Internet connection. The more internet connections increase, the more homes are exposed to attacks every day. Companies work hard to protect devices from attacks by periodically releasing security updates that, in most cases, are never executed. The longer devices remain out of date, the more vulnerable they remain, therefore, they continuously risk network attacks. This study presents SafeHome, a cross-platform mobile application that aims to shorten the gap between the release of an update and the actual device’s update. With SafeHome, also people who are not familiar with technology will be able to increase the security of their homes with a few simple steps: pressing a button to scan the home network and just waiting until an update is released for one of the scanned devices. The final result is still a prototype that follows the rules of a research study which highlights the possibility to reach the goal when technology will make another step forward.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Information technology (IT) allows for large-scale data collection and data analysis, e.g. through logs of user behavior and online surveys. While the issue of structured access to data is extremely important, previous research has not sufficiently emphasized design of data export for research purposes. If researchers are to make their data accessible, they must be empowered to export data in a flexible manner. In this paper, we employ action design research to develop design principles for data export in an e-Health context. Design is in- formed by a sociomaterial world-view, object-oriented patterns and principles, and usability goals. Through three build-intervene-evaluate cycles in an empiri- cal setting where randomized controlled trials are designed, we propose nine design principles and a conceptual architecture for data export. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

An Empirical Account of Fitness-Utility: A Case of Radical Change towards Mobility in DSR Practice2014Ingår i: Advancing the Impact of Design Science: Moving from Theory to Practice: 9th International Conference, DESRIST 2014, Miami, FL, USA, May 22-24, 2014. Abstract [en]

Evaluation is an essential part of design science research - a means to demonstrate qualities of artefacts and knowledge abstractions. The utilityfitness model suggests that evaluation needs to move from ‘usefulness’ measures to utility functions that incorporate the long-term evolution and survival of an artefact in its design landscape. In this paper, we interpret a process of innovative change taking place within a design system, in order to provide an empirical account of utility-fitness. We propose that the utility-fitness model pays too little explicit attention to technological-ecological fit, accountability, and robustness: Three ideals that were prevalent in the scrutinized empirical setting.

A System Development Life Cycle for Persuasive Design for Sustainability2015Ingår i: Persuasive Technology: 10th International Conference, PERSUASIVE 2015, Chicago, IL, USA, June 3-5, 2015, Proceedings / [ed] MacTavish, T., and Basapur, S., Cham: Springer International Publishing , 2015, s. 217-228Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The impact of a system development lifecycle (SDLC) often determines the success of a project from analysis to evolution. Although SDLC can be universally used design projects, a focused SDLC for a specific complex design issue could be valuable for understanding diverse user needs. The importance of sustainability elevation using a persuasive system is not new. Previous research presented frameworks and design principles for persuasive system design for sustainability, while an SDLC of sustainable system development also exists. However, at present no SDLC for persuasive design aiming for sustainability is evident, which was proposed in this paper. An existing sustainable SDLC established earlier by the authors was taken as the reference framework. A cognitive model with established persuasive design principles was then analyzed and mapped within the context of the reference framework to come up with the resulting life cycle. Finally, extensive discussions and future work possibilities were given.

An Iterative Information System Design Process for Sustainability2015Ingår i: SIGCHI HCI & Sustainability Workshop - CHI '15, 2015Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Bridging business and computer science into an improvedalignment using the theoretical foundations of informationand computation is one of the aims of information science(IS). Improved design knowledge from other interdisciplinaryresearch fields, like human-computer interaction (HCI),could advance different design thinking and processes forIS. While structuring an IS design process for a sustainableresult is challenging, an HCI-focused viewpoint on IS designcould be beneficial in this matter. In this paper, an iterativedesign process for sustainable information system designconceptualized from HCI is proposed. The resulting designprocess highlights the different roles of HCI towards buildingknowledge in IS by influencing different design choices onuser behavior and contributing towards generating reusabledesigns in different phases of the design process.

Information System Design Space for Sustainability2015Ingår i: New Horizons in Design Science: Broadening the Research Agenda / [ed] Donnellan, B; Helfert, M; Kenneally, J; VanderMeer, D; Rothenberger, M; Winter, R, Cham: Springer International Publishing , 2015, s. 39-54Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The interdisciplinary nature of human-computer interaction (HCI) makes it possible to contribute towards an improved thinking in design and the process of information system designs. It is, however, a challenging aim, because the transformation of different gathered knowledge from HCI to information system designers is not easy, there being multiple design solutions available. In this paper a design space for designing an information system aimed at sustainability is introduced and discussed. The design space could be seen as part of a new design process, or correlating with an existing design setting and consisting of nine different components that are explored elaborately through a design space analysis. Differently selected dimensions of the proposed design space imitate knowledge from HCI and the result thus reflects a support for successfully transferring knowledge from HCI to the information system (IS) designers for improving a design process.

Some Aspects of Using Universal Design as a Redesign Strategy for Sustainability2017Ingår i: Advances and New Trends in Environmental Informatics / [ed] Wohlgemuth, V., Fuchs-Kittowski, F., Wittmann, J., Springer, 2017, s. 49-60Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Sustainability is something that unites humankind and the important 2015 UN Climate Change Conference manifested this and was described by many as our last chance. A shifting towards sustainability through design is a challenge for managers and policymakers of organizations since the existing system or product could be complex and may have difficulty to adopt such a shift. This paper explores how organizations and their designers and developers could benefit from having a predictable process to follow for conducting such a shift, since numerous challenges are associated with costs and revenues. While universal design (UD) is a design philosophy closely associated with the sustainable design, an advanced perspective of UD could be implied as a redesign strategy for existing design and may be used as a radical design and innovation strategy for sustainability. In this paper, some of the aspects of UD as a redesign strategy for sustainability are addressed. Based on the previous theoretical frameworks, a UD approach for redesigning towards sustainability was formulated and discussed.

    Abstract [en]

There is a raise in penetration of smart phone while using enterprise application, as most of them are downloaded from the public market, resulting in challenge for security framework, causing a threat to lose sensitive user data. To prevent this ARM introduces the virtualization technique in hardware level, which prevents processing of trusted application that is completely isolated from general processing. To improvise this, we need to understand ARM Architecture; however it is still black box for users and developers. In this article, we take a deep look at the hardware architecture of the ARM trust zone to study and analyze its implementation and also to create its replica in emulator. Moreover we describe feasibility of various designs, implementation of trust zone feature in android emulator; with sample trusted application called secure channeling and concludes with annotation of suitable design on future enhancement. The security domain for secure processing and utility in emulator is to benefit the user and developer community.

Privacy as Contextual Integrity in Online Proctoring Systems in Higher Education: A scoping review2023Ingår i: Proceedings of the 56th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, HICSS 2023, IEEE Computer Society , 2023, s. 74-82Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Privacy is one of the key challenges to the adoption and implementation of online proctoring systems (OPS) in higher education. To better understand this challenge, we adopt privacy as contextual integrity theory to conduct a scoping review of 17 papers. The results show different types of students' personal and sensitive information are collected and disseminated; this raises considerable privacy concerns. As well as the governing principles including transparency and fairness, consent and choice, information minimization, accountability, and information security and accuracy have been identified to address privacy problems. This study notifies a need to clarify how these principles should be implemented and sustained, and what privacy concerns and actors they relate to. Further, it calls for the need to clarify the responsibility of key actors in enacting and sustaining responsible adoption and use of OPS in higher education.

Taxonomy of Physiologically Adaptive Systems and Design Framework2021Ingår i: International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction: Third International Conference, AIS 2021, Held as Part of the 23rd HCI International Conference, HCII 2021, Virtual Event, July 24–29, 2021, Proceedings, Part I / [ed] Robert A. Abstract [en]

The design of physiologically adaptive systems entails several complex steps from acquiring human body signals to create responsive adaptive behaviors that can be used to enhance conventional communication pathways between human and technological systems. Categorizing and classifying the computing techniques used to create intelligent adaptation via physiological metrics is an important step towards creating a body of knowledge that allows the field to develop and mature accordingly. This paper proposes the creation of a taxonomy that groups several physiologically adaptive (also called biocybernetic) systems that have been previously designed and reported. The taxonomy proposes two subcategories of adaptive techniques: control theoretics and machine learning, which have multiple sub-categories that we illustrate with systems created in the last decades. Based on the proposed taxonomy, we also propose a design framework that considers four fundamental aspects that should be defined when designing physiologically adaptive systems: the medium, the application area, the psychophysiological target state, and the adaptation technique. We conclude the paper by discussing the importance of the proposed taxonomy and design framework as well as suggesting research areas and applications where we envision biocybernetic systems will evolve in the following years.

Architecture for Adaptive Information Security Systems as applied to Social Networks2011Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Users of social networks appear to want and need to share information online without necessarily thinking about the security consequences. Hackers and attackers have understood the potential vulnerabilities in social networks. This paper describes an architecture for adaptive information security systems, which could be applied to provide security services in social networks. The problem with most security architectures is that they do not provide adaptive security measures to environments and to culture of users. In addition, most security architectures provide technical security measures but fail to provide socio-technical measures. The enemies of ICT use both technical and social measures to attack ICT systems. This paper presents a security architecture that provides adaptive security measures and socio-technical measures in social networks.

Modelling the Enemies of an IT Security System - A Socio-Technical System Security Model2011Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a socio-technical security model for security systems that include both the system being defended and the attacking system. We first model security as a ratio or function of the states that an attacker can produce over the states that defend can control. We then sub divided the control states of a defending systems using the security value chain and socio technical system security model. The paper then presents two attempts to validate the acceptance of the defense model using cross culture surveys of individuals from over 20 different countries indicate culture variation in security modeling. An example of how an attacker can model an attack strategy is given at the end of the paper. The paper concludes with a discussion of how the modeling can be new research in modeling criminal organization using effective based operations methodology

Integrated Security System for E-Government based on SAML Standard2004Ingår i: Proceedings of Information Security South Africa ISSA2004, 2004Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes an integrated security system for electronic-government services. Many governments are transforming manual government services to electronic government services. This transformation is in most cases done without involving users of the services. This makes users of these services have little trust in the e-government. Security is in most cases not addressed from the early stages of e-government development. Some governments depend on security solutions from private vendors and these governments do not have full control of security. E-government services have different levels of classification and so they require different types of authentication and authorization methods. Most e-government systems today use one form of authentication in all types of services without considering the different sensitivity levels. All countries have different levels of e-literacy and users with low levels of e-literacy do not understand some of today‘s e-government security systems. This security system provides multiple authentication methods. Some e-government services require simple authentication while other highly classified transactions demand strong authentication. This security system provides multiple authorization schemes, information integrity schemes and digital signature schemes. These schemes can be configured to accommodate different e-literacy levels. The system integrates a registration system, a certification system, an authorization system, and a smart card system. It bases on the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) standard, which is an XML-based framework for exchanging security information. The system can be integrated in existing e-government systems and can be built-in in new e-government systems. Information of different levels of classification can be stored in same websites and can be accessed through multiple authentication and authorization methods. This system enables the society to perform secure e-government transactions and accommodates different e-literacy levels.

A Framework for Adaptive Information Security Systems: A Holistic Investigation2011Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This research proposes a framework for adaptive information security systems that considers both the technical and social aspects of information systems security. Initial development of information systems security focused on computer technology and communication protocols. Researchers and designers did not consider culture, traditions, ethics, and other social issues of the people using the systems when designing and developing information security systems. They also seemed to ignore environments where these systems run and concentrated only on securing parts of the information systems. Furthermore, they did not pay adequate attention to the enemies of information systemsand the need for adaption to a changing enviroment. The consequences of this lack of attentions to a number of important factors have given us the information security systems that we have today, which appear to be systemically insecure.

To approach this systemic insecurity problem the research was divided into mini studies that were based on the Systemic-Holistic paradigm, Immune System concepts, and Socio-Technical System theory. Applying the holistic research process the author started first by exploring adaptation systems. After exploring these systems, the focus of the research was to understand the systems and features required for making information security systems learn to adapt to the changing environments. Designing and testing the adaptive framework were the next steps. The acquired knowledge from this research was structured into domains in accordance to ontological principles and relationship between domains was studied. These domains were then integrated with the security value-based chain concept, which include deterrence, prevention, detection, response, and recovery functions to create a framework for adaptive information security systems.

The results of the mini studies were reported in a number of papers, which were published in proceedings of international conferences and a journal. For this work, 12 of the thesis papers are included. A framework for adaptive information security system was created. Trials to apply and validate the framework were performed using three methods. The first method was a panel validation, which showed that the framework could be used for providing adaptive security measures and structuring  security work. The second method mapped the framework to the security standards, which showed that the framework was aligned with the major information systems security standards. The third and last validation method was to map the framework with reported ICT crimes cases. The results indicated that most crimes appear to occur because the security systems in place lacked deterrence security measures and had weak prevention, detection, and response security measures. The adaptive information security systems framework was also applied to a number of areas including a secure e-learning, social networks, and telemedicine systems.

It is concluded in this thesis that this adaptive information security system framework can be applied to minimize a number of  systemic insecurity problems and warrants more applied research and practical implementations.

Secure E-learning using the Holistic and Immune Security Framework2009Ingår i: The 4th International Conference for Internet Technology and Secured Transactions, 2009, s. 189-196Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes how to secure e-learning systems by applying the Holistic and Immune Security Framework. E-learning has great potential for developing communities but security of e-learning systems has not been fully addressed. We have developed a security framework that considers culture of users and environments where information systems operate. We apply the holistic approach to secure e-learning systems. The holistic and immune security framework is a function of the deterrence, prevention, detection, response, and recovery system. The security framework makes an E-learning system learn to adapt to environments and to culture of users. We apply the principles of immune system to secure E-learning systems. We describe how to secure the weak links that are created by culture of users in E-leaning systems.

Indicators and Implications for Information Quality Management Improvements: A case study within AGA Specialty Gas division2012Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The two largest resources companies have today are knowledge workers and information. Therefore, it is important for companies to focus efforts on providing information users with the best possible quality of information to ensure that knowledge can perform tasks efficiently and effectively. The first task of this study was to figure out if the case division had any information quality problems; this was because our case division did not know if they had any information quality problems and thereby asked the researchers to start from a blank page. Therefore, the focus of this research was to investigate the level of infor-mation quality management implementation as well as knowledge workers’ perception re-garding information product within the company. By using the characteristics of IQMM the researchers were able to find implications and indicators for information quality man-agement at AGA Specialty Gas division. The researchers decided that the nature of the problem was to investigate the current situation within our case company. An inductive approach was the best solution with a philosophical stand point of interpretation to tackle the problem. The collection of data was done in a multi-method approach in which qualita-tive data was gathered from semi-structured face-to-face interviews while quantitative data was gathered by the use of a questionnaire. This data was then interpreted in a narrative style in which the researchers told what was going on and what it implies for the case com-pany by using relevant theories. The analysis illustrates some interesting findings regarding indications and implications for information quality management implementation, as well as the difficulties in assessing the level of information quality maturity level. The results show that there are some limitations towards the use of a linear information maturity mod-el which makes it hard to assess the level of maturity in this study. The contribution in this research study is both practically and academically sound.

    Abstract [sv]

    Bodystorming for Movement-based Interaction Design2016Ingår i: Human Technology, E-ISSN 1795-6889, Vol. 12, nr 2, s. 193-251Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

After a decade of movement-based interaction in human–computer interaction, designing for the moving body still remains a challenge. Research in this field requires methods to help access, articulate, and harness embodied experiences in ways that can inform the design process. To address this challenge, this article appropriates bodystorming, an embodied ideation method for movement-based interaction design. The proposed method allows for early consideration of the physical, collocated, and social aspects of a designed activity as illustrated with two explorative workshops in different application domains: interactive body games and interactive performances. Using a qualitative methods approach, we used video material from the workshops, feedback from participants, and our own experience as participants and facilitators to outline important characteristics of the bodystorming method in the domain of movement-based interaction. The proposed method is compared with previous ones and application implications are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

Designing bodily experiences is challenging. In this paper, we propose embodied sketching as a way of practicing design that involves understanding and designing for bodily experiences early in the design process. Embodied sketching encompasses ideation methods that are grounded in, and inspired by, the lived experience and includes the social and spatial settings as design resources in the sketching. Embodied sketching is also based on harnessing play and playfulness as the principal way to elicit creative physical engagement. We present three different ways to implement and use embodied sketching in the application domain of co-located social play. These include bodystorming of ideas, co-designing with users, and sensitizing designers. The latter helps to uncover and articulate significant, as well as novel embodied experiences, whilst the first two are useful for developing a better understanding of possible design resources.

Mapping the Landscape of Digital Game-Based Learning in Swedish Compulsory and Upper Secondary Schools: Opportunities and Challenges for Teachers2020Licentiatavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Interest in the use of digital games in education has been increasing over the past few decades. Advocates argue that digital games are powerful learning tools with the potential to support increased motivational, cognitive, behavioural, affective, physiological and social outcomes. However, empirical evidence for their effectiveness is mixed. Research has focused primarily on measuring the effect of games on learning in researcher-controlled experiments, whilst relatively less attention has been paid to the role of teachers. The thesis addresses the research gap by investigating how teachers in Swedish compulsory and upper secondary schools use digital games on their own initiative and how they develop their competencies. It also considers the challenges they face.

Data from in-depth qualitative interviews and a mixed method survey are used to investigate the research questions. Both the data collection and analysis have been informed by activity theory. This is also used to problematise the adaptation of digital games as teaching and learning tools. In addition, the analysis explores teachers´ self-reported activities in relation to their disposition towards digital games.

The findings show that a diversity of digital games and gamification tools have found a foothold in Swedish classrooms. The participating teachers are interested in introducing and further developing digital game-based approaches, though there are limitations in their use of gaming resources and the extent to which they can leverage these to achieve educational outcomes. The research identifies and discusses four general categories of teachers: non-game users, sceptics, curious adopters and advanced adopters. Results indicate that the more positive disposition of game-using teachers tends to be related to a higher level of pedagogical integration, a greater variety of game use, and a wider range of educational outcomes, as well as an interest in professional development. Digital game-based learning is often understood as the use of gamification tools in the form of quizzes, whereas complex games and longer gameplay are less typical. Whilst most teachers agree on the motivational benefits of digital games, not as many perceive them as effective in teaching new knowledge and cognitive skills. The introduction of digital games is hampered by the lack of access to relevant and good-quality products, financial resources, preparation time and adequate technology, as well as contextualised and flexible forms of professional development. These challenges hint at deeper issues with preexisting education structures. Future research should have a twofold focus: the development of adequate game resources that can support collaborative forms of learning and higher-level skills, and flexible and contextualised competence-development solutions for teachers which are relevant to their needs.

The thesis contributes to the current literature by mapping the landscape of digital game-based learning in Swedish compulsory and upper secondary schools. It provides a nuanced understanding of the perspectives of teachers on digital game use and the opportunities and challenges presented by digital game-based learning.

Digital Games in Education: Exploring Teachers´ Practices and Challenges From Play to Co-Design2018Ingår i: Proceedings of the 12th European Conference on Game-Based Learning / [ed] Mélanie Ciussi, Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited, 2018, s. 388-395Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Digital games have potential to support increased student motivation and engagement in education, but their use is not yet a widespread practice. Meta-research indicates that empirical evidence for digital games as effective learning tools is mixed. The research area is predominantly quantitative with an emphasis on researcher-led, stand-alone experiments that disconnect research from real-life practices of teachers. This study examined teachers´ practice-based use of digital games. We conducted in-depth interviews with eight teachers from five Swedish schools. Findings show that teachers using nonserious games and game development tools co-design the gaming and learning experience. They develop and share conceptual and practical game-based pedagogical tools or use alongside games, and adopt these to their unique contexts. While access to technology and diversity of students´ background have implications for game implementation, we also find that teachers not only understand digital games as teaching tools but also as contemporary literature to be subjected to critical analysis. Future research includes examining students’ interaction with the pedagogical tools in game-based learning settings.

    Abstract [en]

The interest in research around digital games in education has been significant; however, the integration of games in teaching and teachers´ practice-based use is still somewhat an unexplored area. In this study, we investigate digital game implementation practices and challenges of teachers in Swedish compulsory and upper secondary schools and investigate how factors such as age, gender, and teaching-gaming background may influence digital game-based teaching practices. This study is the first to collect a comprehensive set of data in the Swedish context. Data were collected during March and April 2019 through an online survey consisting of 37 questions from 181 respondents. Our findings show that teachers in our sample apply gamification tools and a variety of digital games across different subject areas, typically to motivate student and practice knowledge. We find that slightly more females use gamification tools and educational games than males while males and young teachers are more likely to use entertainment games for teaching. Teachers report motivational and cognitive outcomes of digital games-based learning but perceive games as less effective for teaching communicative and analytical skills. The access to good quality resources applicable to the curriculum is a concern among all the teachers. However, teachers new to digital games-based teaching are mostly concerned about the integration of games and their unfamiliarity with game-related technologies. Teachers with experience in the area are mostly concerned about game costs, access to good quality resources and preparation time. Future work will include a broader analysis of the data and results may be used to support the customization of game-based teaching tools and professional development programs to meet the needs of teachers.

    Abstract [en]

To effectively support digital game adoption in education, stakeholders need to understand teachers’ current game-based teaching practices, challenges, and needs. This study investigates digital game use of teachers at compulsory and upper secondary school levels in Sweden. Data were collected from 181 respondents during spring 2019 through an online survey. Cluster analysis and descriptive statistics are used to establish the characteristics of game-using teachers and explore their teaching practices, challenges, and professional development needs. Based on their disposition, three subsets of game-using teachers are identified. Findings indicate that a more positive disposition is related to increased pedagogical integration, a greater variety of game use, higher and more varied educational outcomes, as well as interest in professional development. Perceptions of inhibiting factors of games-based teaching tend to shift with teachers’ level of game-based teaching competency. Results highlight teachers’ need for good quality games with curricular relevance as well as relevant professional development options. Moreover, the potential of games to facilitate a collaborative form of learning and skill development may not have been yet fully realized in Swedish schools. Future research should have a twofold focus; the development of adequate game resources that can support collaborative forms of learning and higher-level skills development, as well as competency development solutions for teachers relevant to their needs.

Management of Software Assets: Challenges in Large Organizations2021Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a study about the difficulties managing software assets within larger organizations.Software Asset Management (SAM) is a fairly new practice which has started to be used byorganizations in order to track and manage software assets throughout their life cycle. Existingliterature states that organizations have challenges with the increasing complexity, which comesalong when buying software products from manufacturers. However, the lack of academicresearch, due to the rapid development of technology has been limited. The purpose of this paperis to explore the challenges that large organizations are confronted with when managing softwareassets. A mixed study approach was conducted with main focus on a qualitative approach, where five persons with mainly long experience in Software Asset Management, whereinterviewed. In addition, a survey was sent out to employees who work with IT, to capture ageneral aspect on the topic. The findings of the study include the identified challenges of SAM,which are divided in four main areas. Further, the paper highlights the importance and success ofSoftware Asset Management.

Succeeding implementation: the internet of things as a digitally transformative technology2022Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to ‘smart’, sensor- and intelligence-imbued, interconnected systems, intended to generate and process context-aware data that can be used to improve organizational processes. Improvement of logistical-, process-, or management-efficacy allows firms and organizations to radically change and enhance the efficiency and scale of key aspects of their operations. Such change inevitably affects the actors, actor-groups, and stakeholders involved, regardless of their roles within the system.

Digital Transformation describes the ongoing process in which organizations seek to create additional value through the implementation of digital technologies. This dissertation shows how the IoT can come to affect organizations, by describing and analyzing these changes through the use of three theoretical frameworks – the Technological Frames Framework, the Organizational Culture Framework, and the Practice Lens Perspective. Three appended research papers detail effects of IoT implementation on actors and stakeholders documented in two separate case studies, and a fourth appended research paper describes a scoping study, examining the current discourse of IoT within the social science research-field, with all of the appended papers being first-authored.

The results of the case studies and their three respective papers describe how organizational practices can come to change following the introduction of an IoT system and these changes’ effects on the actors involved. This is detailed through descriptions and analyses of qualitative data obtained from interviews with representatives of all involved actors, and stakeholders, regarding their thoughts, perceptions, and actions related to the IoT system and its impact. Three areas in which an IoT system may cause rapid noticeable change are addressed: ‘Actors’, ‘Organization’ and ‘Value Creation’. How each of these aspects are affected and their consequent effects on one another are described, based on the data obtained in the case studies and findings presented in the first three appended research papers. In contrast, the scoping study illuminates contextual elements of the IoT discussed by social science researchers, highlighting areas that have received too little attention but are crucial for successful Digital Transformation.

In sum, this dissertation contributes to IS research by presenting and discussing results of two case studies involving IoT system implementation in two organizational settings with very similar work practices. It further contributes by examining one of these implementations in a longitudinal fashion, spanning two years, examining the changes both among different actors and within the organization itself. Lastly it contributes by identifying a major research gap in extant studies in social science-related aspects of the IoT, and addressing it based on the gathered results.

Too much information!: Information-overload from an IT-management perspective2016Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

As workplaces have become more digitalized and improvements constantly being made in order to optimize performance, it becomes pivotal for managers to understand how stress within organizations can be linked to the information- and communication technology within them. This thesis addresses the research gap of several studies existing regarding technology-related stress, but where a majority of them are quantitative in nature and overlooking the important aspect of organizational culture. The purpose of this thesis is to create an understanding regarding how managers perceive technostress in their organization, and how counterstrategies, if any, are applied. The added value of this research is that it highlights how poorly understood the problem of information overload is amongst certain managers, while highlighting the cultural aspects within organizations and their contributions to the problem. The results show that while many aspects related to information overload are noticed by managers and employees alike, very few – if any – counterstrategies exists in order to highlight and combat the problems that information overload entails. While individual practices existed, few could be realized at an organizational level without first addressing company culture.

    Abstract [sv]

Tack!

Agilt RUP / Plandrivna Agila metoder: Hur arbetar företagen?2014Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Inom systemutveckling används ett flertal olika arbetsmetoder. Däribland agila metoder som t.ex. XP, SCRUM, Kanban och plandrivna t.ex. RUP, Vattenfallsmodellen.

Nyckelord: Systemutveckling, Metod, Plandrivna metoder, Agila metoder, Metodanpassning, Software crisis, Method in action, Kanban, Scrum, Rational Unified Process
