’Think of it first as an advertising system’: Personalisierte Online-Suche als Datenlieferant des Marketings2007In: Kommunikation@gesellschaft, ISSN 1616-2617, E-ISSN 1616-2617, Vol. 8, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [de]

Downshifting och livsstilsmigration till landsbygden: En kvalitativ studie om kvinnors flyttmotiv till den svenska landsbygden2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The following study aims to give a first look into the process of when tourists searches for information before a trip and to understand how they reflect over the reliability in different kinds of information. Internet has an important meaning for information research, especially within the tourism business and experience economy. The value of reviews has grown increasingly bigger for customers when they are about to look for information, decide which product that suits them the most and to make their decision. While positive reviews have become yet more important for a product/experience to get chosen by the customer, false reviews have started to take their places at the websites of reviews. The reasons behind may be to raise a certain product’s ratings or simply to give another product or company a bad reputation. The following essay put light on the problem with the phenomena of false reviews and how these can harm the tourism industry in several ways. The study will highlight how different segments of tourists searches information, what value reviews have to them and what makes a review seem trustworthy or faked. The segments that were asked to participate in the survey were chosen based on their age and life situation. Through this we created the following three groups: students, parents from a family with children, and people who are retired. The result of the study shows that many of the respondents within the segment Students use online reviews to gather information and to boost their motives for consumption. The respondents within the other two groups mainly use the tourism companies’ own websites when they are about to consume. An important result of the study is that, although many respondents gave the answer that they mainly search information on websites, they still put greater trust in rumors and comments from friends, especially the respondents within the segment parents from a family with children. It has also been proved that the use of internet increases the risk of getting a negative experience.

UAS-noggrannhet i praktiken: En undersökning av dagens UAS-fotogrammetris noggrannhet2013Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The purpose of the study is to understand what the accuracy of UAS photogrammetry today (2013) is. The study was based on the following questions: Can UAS photogrammetry today give precise points, measuring the centre of 1x1 meter plywood boards viewed from an orthophoto?; Can it give similar accuracy as the size of the pixels? And can UAS technology today be used to produce elevation models of good quality?

To investigate these questions, a study has been made to compare coordinates collected from a total station and UAS photogrammetric methods. The results show that the standard error is approximately 1 pixel on flat coordinates and 1 pixel on elevated coordinates. The pixel size was between 4.7 and 9.3 cm. The biggest source of error seems to be the resolution on the pictures, but the technology develops quickly. The UAS photogrammetry method definitely meets the expectations of the questions.

Digitala Utopier.: En studie om digitalisering & planerarens roll i framtidens digitala städer.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Navigating the Storm: A qualitative study of complementary media usage during natural disasters2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze the use of different media channels occurred within a natural disaster situation. This research focuses specifically on charting the factors that affect audiences in their choice of media channels and how these factors ultimately lead to the complimentarily use of sources. This study is based on channel complementarity theory and utilizes a qualitative method consisting of semi-structured interviews and has been complemented with a survey that respondents were required to complete prior to the interview. The twelve college students that made up the sample for this study were selected through convenient and purposive means and have personally been involved in natural disaster situations without exception.

Final results and analysis suggest that individuals utilize several media channels combined, at different points in time or simultaneously, and in random order during a natural disaster. The analysis of the results also shows that individuals use this variety of media channels in order to obtain two different perspectives: broad and narrow. Traditional media channels such as radio and television are shown to be used in order to obtain the broader perspective during a natural disaster event. In contrast, social media like Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat are used to gain the narrower perspective.

The findings of this study also suggest that factors affecting media choices are accentuated by a crisis such as a natural disaster and are intrinsically connected to specific needs audiences have at one particular point in time. The most relevant factors contributing to the choice of media type and leading to channel complementarity found in this study are accessibility, compatibility of sources, tailorability, and humor appeal. Controversially, credibility appears to be disregarded as a key factor, even though it is still perceived as an influential characteristic.

Ecostrategies: Presentation and Elaboration of a Conceptual Framework of Landscape Perspectives2016In: Tourism, ISSN 1332-7461, Vol. 64, no 1, p. 63-80Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The conceptual framework of ecostrategies (views and use of landscape) presented here have been used to analyse various cases of nature-based tourism and related activities such as outdoor recreation, outdoor education, nature reserves and conservation. The role of the ecostrategies is to illustrate the intersections, conflicts and alliances between different types of nature based tourism and relations to other rural activities. The framework consists of four main ecostrategies, which are identified from the tension between "functional specialization" vs. "territorial adaptation" and the tension between the ideals of "utilization" vs. "appreciation". The four ecostrategies are the landscape seen as: (i) a museum for external consumption, (ii) a factory for producing activities and products, (iii) a dedicated place to be utilized and (iv) a dedicated place to be contemplated. These ecostrategies are linked to various consequences in terms of democracy, environmental issues, views of nature, local development, planning, pedagogy, identity and conflicts. The framework has proved fruitful in discussions about landscape futures, as illustrated by the case studies on nature based tourism, outdoor recreation and nature reserves presented in the article. Some of the framework's shortcomings are here presented, together with suggestions for further development, such as quantitative survey investigations and using a three-dimensional version to illustrate previously hidden tensions.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to suggest an outdoor education model that respects the need to critically discuss the general belief in a causal relationship between experiences of nature, environmentally-friendly attitudes and behavioural change, but that at the same time respects the legitimate claims on the part of outdoor education practice for concretisation and clarity. The foundation of this model consists of a combination of theoretical perspectives and models that have been generated through a number of Swedish interdisciplinary research projects concerning human interrelationships with the landscape during the last decade. The paper first focuses on the subtleties of environmental concern with the aid of an environmentally historic model of how care for nature and environmental protection successively developed during the last century. It then addresses different aspects of outdoor education by presenting two specific models: a model of two principally diverse motives for this education, and a model of three different approaches to the landscape when executing outdoor education. In the final section these models are assembled in a suggested model for outdoor education and environmental concern, and identify a handful of main educational paths. The paper concludes with a brief discussion about continued research and examples of what can be regarded as particularly important developments and additions to the suggested model.

Becoming a circumstantial media activist  Brazilian Landless Workers Movement struggle to construct arenas for communication: Brazilian Landless Workers Movement's struggle to construct arenas for communication2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Alternative or radical media (Downing 2000) are characterized by collective production, democratic participation and promotion of minorities’ rights to self- expression. This kind of media production is common among social movements and insurgent organizations whose members do not see themselves and their causes represented in mainstream media. This is the case of the Brazilian Landless Workers Movement (MST), which since its foundation in 1984 has been creating media outlets and producing content for different platforms. However, realizing that alternative arenas would not grant participation in the public debate, MST became also active in the area of media and communication rights in Brazil. Based on fieldwork carried out in 2013 and 2014 this article proposes a perspective to communication rights (cf. Peruzzo 2007 and 2014) that is attentive to the structural configuration of media landscape and not only to the provision of technology and production skills. In the current context were technology enabled activism has become the focus of research; this study shows that collective action and promotion of structural change are still relevant. Because the possibility to express discontentment and organize through digital media does not necessarily mean that those at the margins will be represented (cf. Fraser 2009) in the public sphere.

    Abstract [en]

This study looks into communicative processes and media practices among members of a subaltern social movement. The aim is to gain an understanding of how these processes and practices contribute to symbolic cohesion in the movement, how they develop and are socialized into practices, and how these processes and practices help challenge hegemonic groups in society. These questions are explored through a qualitative study, based on fieldwork and interviews, of a subaltern social movement. The empirical object of the study is the Brazilian Landless Workers Movement (MST), which was founded in 1984 to promote agrarian reform and defend the rights of rural workers in Brazil.

At the macro-level, the discussion addresses social realities marked by the meta-processes of globalisation, neo-liberalisation, and mediatisation. Against this background, the experiences of MST militants and of the movement as a whole help us to understand how different communicative processes play a role in the ways people experience globalisation, neo-liberalisation, and mediatisation in their daily lives. Departing from an understanding of communication as a process that structures practices (mediated and non-mediated), this study questions the media-centric understanding of communication, arguing that media practices are created through appropriation processes.

The results show that communicative processes are crucial to reinforcing values and symbologies associated with the rural worker identity. There is also a high level of reflexivity about media practices and an understanding that they must serve the principles of the collective. As a consequence, the movement seeks to maintain control over media, routinely discussing and evaluating the adoption and use of media. The interviews show ambivalence towards the alleged dialogic and organisational potential of digital media and to the adaptability of these media to the MST’s organisational processes. Through observation, it is possible to conclude that media have an instrumental function, as opposed to a structural function, in the processes of social transformation engendered by the MST.

    Abstract [en]

Due to the technological development, more websites than ever are created, while people at the same time are becoming more accustomed to sift through information on the Internet. This means that the pressure increase for companies to stand out and raise their quality on the Internet more than ever before. It is therefore not sufficient to create just a functional and visually appealing website design, you need to know more specifically who it is that you are designing for, which brings the company closer to achieveing its goals for the website.

Värmlandsgôtt is just one of the many companies fighting for the attention on the Internet, and to succeed it is crucial to choose a valid strategy. To achieve the website product objectives and simultaneously reach out to the intended target audience, it is important to know which people that are actually included in the target audience, and examine what they prefer and reject on various websites, i.e. defining user needs.

In order to define product objectives and user needs for the Värmlandsgôtt website, Maria Sundin at Värmlandsgôtt was put through an informer interview. She is the one who has insight into how the company wants to communicate with its target audience and also knows what goals the company and website are attempting to achieve. She helped defining the target audience, which was then examined through user testing interviews.

Three prototype websites were created that the respondents in the user testing interviews shared their views on. The prototypes’ functionality and design was founded in research and adapted by the intended target audience and product goals that Maria Sundin defined. A prototype was clearly chosen as favorite and was then the one that got developed into the final solution for the website.

Elevers uppfattning av kursen Geografi 1 i relation till ämnets centrala innehåll2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

During the last decade the world has experienced fundamental changes in the way marketing works. The changes has its origin in the rapid development of Web 2.0 and especially social media. Scientists claim that social media is essential in marketing for businesses if they want to be successful in the future.  This makes social media an important channel for marketing that can not be ignored especially in tourism since it is all about experiences. Social media gives tourism companies an opportunity to engage their potential visitors aswell as before, during and after their visit. Tourism itself consists of many small businesses especially the smallest ones, so called micro businesses. On the other hand Social media is not associated with any larger expences in comparison with traditional marketing. Altogether these facts could make social media a suitable channel for microbusinesses since they have restricted resources in both time and money. The fast-moving changes and development in social media might also be a challenge for micro businesses since they additonally have many other assigments to keep up with.

With the previous facts in mind the main purpose of this essay is to examine which obstacles and opportunities social media implies for tourism businesses. Both as an phenomenon and marketing tool. To accomplish this we will look at micro businesses since they are a considerable part of the tourism in Sweden. The research questions we will use to fulfill the purpose of the essay are: What point of view do micro businesses in tourism have on social media and its importance, what knowledge and experience in social media do micro businesses in tourism have and finally how do micro businesses in tourism use social media. This subject will be examined through two separate qualitative methods. One of them consists of five qualitative interviews with micro businesses who are from different parts of tourism and the other is visual analysis of the businesses usage of Facebook and Instagram. The theroetical basis of the essay are social media, communication in tourism micro businesses managment.

The findings of this study shows that the most distinctive possibilitets with social media for micro businesses in tourism are cost effectivness, accessability and through that be able to reach many people with a message in an easy way. The most visable obstacles are the lack of knowledge about social media and the insecurity concerning the different functions of Facebook and Instagram and lastly about what is suitable for sharing and what is not.

En studie om utomhuspedagogikens och fältstudiernas roll i geografiundervisningen2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

For many families and individuals, the car is an obvious part of the daily life. This way of life has created some serious consequences related to the economy and environment both on a local and a global scale. Air pollution, traffic congestion and noise pollution are some of the more common results. This means that we have to change our way of thinking when it comes to car usage. Ideas like public transport, car tolls and developed bike lanes are all part of the solution, but the concept we decided to bring to the light is car sharing. This concept is relatively unknown to the public, even though it has been around since the seventies. This essay aims to explore why the concept is unknown and what can make the public change its view on car usage and car ownership. The theory is made up of five parts, where the first part explores the growth of the car industry in Sweden and the negative impacts of the vehicle based society. The second part explores the concept of sharing economy. How car sharing is a part of that and what new difficulties and obstacles the sharing economy brings. The third part explores the ecological and economical implications of car sharing and how it can affect the individual. The fourth part explores studies done on the concept of car sharing, comparing international results with ones made by Swedish agencies. The fifth part is about marketing methods of car sharing agencies and what the future holds in store for these companies. The empirical material consists of two parts, the first one is a poll for car users, where we wish to explore their knowledge and view of car sharing. The second part consists of an interview with Fredrik Hoppstadius, employed at Karlstad University with a PhD in Cultural Geography. This study concludes that the public’s increasing ecological and economical concerns might benefit the concept of car sharing and the sharing economy as a whole. The sharing economy gives incentive for the population to try new alternatives to the more common idea of ownership. However, most of these solutions are still in the early stages and the safety concerns are still a big holdback for more users. The marketing perspective of car sharing businesses has to evolve in order for people to gain awareness and more information on the concept of car sharing.

The Hyperlinked Scandinavian News Ecology: The unequal terms forged by the structural properties of digitalisation2018In: Digital Journalism, ISSN 2167-0811, E-ISSN 2167-082X, Vol. 7, no 4, p. 507-531Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article presents a network analysis of 22,861,013 geocoded external hyperlinks, collected from 230 Danish, 220 Norwegian and 208 Swedish news websites in 2016. The analysis asks what the structural properties of the Scandinavian media systems—including its geography and ownership structures—mean for news outlets’ centrality within the hyperlinked news ecology. The analysis finds that whereas incumbent legacy media occupy central positions, about one third of the network is absent from the hyperlinked interaction, primarily local, independently owned newspapers. A multiple linear regression analysis shows that national distribution and corporate ownership correlates to network centrality more than other predictors. As brokers in the network consist of the large, legacy, capital-based news organisations, hyperlink connectivity is primarily characterised by proximity to the centres of power, corporate ownership, agenda setting incumbency and national distribution.

"Vi vill återigen be våra kunder om ursäkt": En analys om hur praxis inom kriskommunikation implementeras i en verklig kris.2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The purpose of this essay was to examine whether parts of established theories regarding crisis communication on social media can be found in real crisis communication during a real crisis. The crisis examined was a crisis that the warehouse Åhlens went through in 2017, where they received criticism for putting items that were injured in regards to a terrorist attack on sale just days after the attack. The essay examined both the post where Åhlens apologized as well as the customers response to said post. To answer and examine the purpose, following research questions were formulated:

    • -  How does established praxis show in Åhlens crisis communication on social media?

    • -  What response did the post receive? Are the commentators on Facebook positive or

negative towards the company after taking part of the post?

Few, or no other, studies where men and womens different, or similar, preferences regarding crisis communication were found during research. Therefore will this essay also examine if there are any differences of preferences between genders. To answer this purpose, following theses were enforced:

    - Do men and women react differently to crisis communication on social media? Are men or women more open to excuses on social media?

All three research questions were analyzed by the same analytical framework. This framework was built up by the Situational Crisis Communications Theory (SCCT), scientist Timothy Coombs Reputation Repair and scientist Stuart Halls theory regarding Encoding/decoding. Two different methods were used to answer different research questions. A qualitative content analysis was used when analyzing the post made by Åhlens, while a quantitative content analysis was used when analyzing the answers.

The result to this examination showed that parts of the theories used in this studie could be found in the communication communicated by Åhlens. The result also showed the general attitude towards the post on Facebook was positive. It also showed that most of the people that read and took note of the post developed a more positive attitude towards the company after reading the post. The result also showed that the respondents in general appreciated when the company did research and adapted their communication after what was expected of them regarding the crisis. In other words, the respondents were, in general, positive and appreciative of the SCCT theory. Lastly, the result showed that there were no clear difference between if men or women prefered different parts or theories regarding crisis communication.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to understand why segregation differs in two like-minded municipalities, is the explanation in their history or in the way each of the cities work with their segregation issues? The result showed that both aspects are contributing and have affected the segregation that is seen today. Trollhättan has a much higher level of segregation than Kungälv because of their former housing and immigration politics and the differences in the current work of the municipalities. Their different views on segregation have directly affected the outcome. We have worked with three different theories as to why segregation might occur. One claims that the physical design is what creates segregation while the other one focuses on humans characterizing certain areas as segregated. The last theory deals with neoliberal planning in order to understand how different societal actors influence segregation through different approaches to planning. We have used a qualitative method in which semistructured interviews have been in focus. Both Kungälv and Trollhättan claim that the physical design is the reason for their segregation, but in our discussion we reached the conclusion that all theories play a role in the segregation that is occuring.

Samförstånd för planprogram: En fallstudie rörande kritiken kring planprogrammet för Våxnäs centrum2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Facebookpubliceringar av resmål2017Student paper second term, 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

I denna uppsats behandlas ämnet electronic word of mouth på Facebook.

    Abstract [en]

Dark tourism is a growing phenomenon that gives the tourist the opportunity to travels focusing on death, accidents and the macabre are in focus. As mortal beings, one can argue that there is always some interest in death, both our own death and others (Stone 2006). Dark tourism is also not a new phenomenon. Stone (2006) notes dark tourism can be traced back to the Roman gladiator games. Another early example of dark tourism may be public executions during the Middle Ages. Over the years, the phenomenon of dark tourism has changed. According to Stone (2006), dark tourism in the last century has become more widespread, Stone (2006) cites Smith (1998); “the largest single category of tourist attraction in the world”. When it comes to places that have a connection to dark and historical events. It is mainly places with connections to places damaged by war.

This study aims to create an understanding why individuals visit dark places. The respondents' destinations, are linked to their nationality and the motives behind the trip. This study is based on a quantitative study in the form of an electronic survey created in the program Survey & Report. The collected survey data has in turn been analysed in SPSS to get a deeper insight into the result. In order to answer our research aim and questions, we have chosen to publish the survey in two different facebook groups Dark Tourism Photography & Dark Tourism and Curious Places and in the Reddit group dark tourism. The survey was also sent out to individuals who we considered being suitable for our research subject

52 respondents participated in the survey. The result of this study shows that most of the respondents visited dark places with the motives ‘Educational purpose’ and ‘To remember the past. A central question in the questionnaire was ‘if the respondent saw some ethical dilemma’ with visiting dark places. Here, the result was relatively divided, where almost as many answered Yes as No.
