    Introducing a process manager in healthcare: an experience report2005Ingår i: Health Informatics Journal, ISSN 1460-4582, E-ISSN 1741-2811, Vol. 11, nr 1, s. 45-61Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

To be efficient and patient focused, healthcare units need to be process oriented and integrated with the processes and IT systems of other healthcare units. A process manager facilitates integration of different systems by using graphical and executable process models. The process manager also communicates directly with healthcare personnel via desktop computers and mobile devices. This article reports on a Swedish project where a prototype system was developed and tested with several healthcare units. The experience shows several advantages and opportunities. For example, current information about patients can be transferred automatically between healthcare units; resource intensive manual tasks can be replaced with automated tasks; and long-term process monitoring and quality assessment can be enabled. However, introducing a process manager requires attention to issues of security, ethics and legality. Healthcare units may also show differences in security awareness and IT maturity, which could obstruct the introduction of a process manager.

Building and Exploiting a Business Process Model for Lobbying: Experience Report2007Ingår i: Communications of the IIMA, ISSN 1543-5970, E-ISSN 1941-6687, Vol. 7, nr 3, s. 1-14Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The paper describes a project in the domain of business process modeling that concerns loosely-structured business processes, i.e. processes for which it is difficult to establish an order of activities. The process in focus is the lobbying process, i.e. a process aimed at influencing decisions of others, e.g. politicians. The project was carried out at a non-profit interest organization, and the paper describes the project’s motivation, structure, methodology, results, and how the results were exploited, including a short description of an IT system built to support the lobbying process. As the commonly spread workflow technique is not particularly suitable for loosely-structured business processes, the project exploited an original state-flow technique for developing a model of the lobbying process. The state-flow technique is based on the state-oriented view on business processes that has been used as a foundation for building the support system. The paper reports a number of problems encountered during the introduction of the system into operational practice. These problems led to the needs of reducing the level of details initially introduced into the system; they will be reintroduced at the later stage when the users become more accustomed to work in the process-oriented manner. In the conclusion, the paper discusses success factors important for modeling projects, and pros and cons of the modeling method used, as well as a broader research context of which the work presented in the paper is a part.

Artefact Centric Model for Digital Innovation2019Ingår i: 2019 IEEE 21st Conference on Business Informatics (CBI), IEEE, 2019, s. 38-46Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Many artefacts of today are non-digital or only partly digital. Digital features can often be added to these artefacts to make them more digital. However, for designers, it can be challenging to figure out what digital features to add. In this paper, we outline an artefact centric approach that addresses the challenge called Artefact Centric Model for Digital Innovation (ACMDI). For the time being, ACMDI works only for information artefacts. In the paper, ACMDI is demonstrated on an example of an educational tool called Apprenticeship Simulation (AS). AS is a tool facilitating students acquiring modelling skills; AS was developed by digitalizing an ordinary text description of a business case.

A Value and Model Driven Method for Patient Oriented KPI Design in Health Care2011Ingår i: Biomedical Engineering Systems and Technologies: Third International Joint Conference, BIOSTEC 2010 / [ed] Fred, A., Filipe, J., Gamboa, H., Springer , 2011, s. 123-137Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In all societies, large resources are spent on health care. However, service quality is still unsatisfactory in large parts of the health care sector. One reason for this state of affairs is the complexity of health care organisations, which make them difficult to govern. Furthermore, due to the high degree of specialisation, health care organisations often need to cooperate, which adds to the complexity. One possible way to improve the cooperation and management of health care organisations is the use of performance management, which is a management approach aiming at optimising the performance of an organisation. The main instrument in performance management is the use of Key Performance Indicators (KPI), which measure how well an organisation fulfills its goals. Designing effective KPIs is a complex and time consuming task that requires substantial efforts. Therefore, there is a need for methods that support organisations in designing KPIs. This paper proposes a value and model driven method for identifying patient oriented KPIs.

    Network orchestration for value platform development2017Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management, ISSN 0019-8501, E-ISSN 1873-2062, Vol. 67, s. 106-121Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The traditional firm and product-centric view of platforms is changing. Platforms are increasingly developed around value that is co-created with a network of actors. In such settings, lead firms shape their environments and develop value platforms through network orchestration. This study examines how lead firms mobilize network relationships to support and build novel value platforms. The research adopts a multiple case study methodology, investigating the development of six value platforms in network settings within Europe. A large-scale interview program over several years was conducted. The findings unravel practices constituting four overarching network orchestration mechanisms in the value platform development context; envisioning, inducing innovativeness, legitimizing, and adjusting. The study explains the relationships and interplay between the orchestration mechanisms and articulates theoretical and managerial contributions.

Dybdelæring: en flerfaglig, relasjonello og skapende tilnærming2019Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [no]

Lean collaboration through video gestures: co-ordinating the production of live televised sport2009Ingår i: CHI '09: Proceedings of the 27th international conference on Human factors in computing systems, New York: ACM , 2009, s. 2279-2288Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the work and interactions between camera operators and a vision mixer during an ice hockey match, and presents an interaction analysis using video data. We analyze video-mediated indexical gestures in the collaborative production of live sport on television between distributed team members. The findings demonstrate how video forms the topic, resource and product of collabora-tion: whilst it shapes the nature of the work (editing), it is simultaneously also the primary resource for supporting mutual orientation and negotiating shot transitions between remote participants (co-ordination), as well as its end prod-uct (broadcast). Our analysis of current professional activi-ties is used to develop implications for the design of future services for live collaborative video production.

e-Government challenges: Exploring inter-organisational aspects of e-service development2006Ingår i: Proceedings of the Fourteenth European Conference on Information Systems, ECIS 2006, Göteborg, Sweden, 2006 / [ed] Jan Ljungberg, Magnus Andersson, Göteborg: University of Gothenburg , 2006, s. 1419-1430Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we are applying inter-organizational concepts from the industrial/business network approach on empirical findings from an e-government case, in order to describe and better understand challenges in one-stop government e-service development. We analyze our case by using concepts that characterize an inter-organizational relationship in terms of its level of continuity, complexity, symmetry, informality, and its dimensions (links, bonds, and ties). The purpose of the paper is to explore how these theoretical concepts can help us focus on certain aspects of e-service development challenges. The empirical findings are collected within an on-going action research project for e-service development in the public sector in Sweden. The aim of the project is to develop one-stop government e-services for driver’s license matters as well as a web-based portal where these e-services and information about the driver’s license process will be easily accessible. Our conclusions are that the theoretical concepts helped us reach further understanding of the empirical case. In the spirit of the network approach, we focused on the present situation and been able to give a rather detailed and fine-grained picture of the problems and challenges in this context.

Studies in Semantic Modeling of Real-World Objects using Perceptual Anchoring2019Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Autonomous agents, situated in real-world scenarios, need to maintain consonance between the perceived world (through sensory capabilities) and their internal representation of the world in the form of symbolic knowledge. An approach for modeling such representations of objects is through the concept of perceptual anchoring, which, by definition, handles the problem of creating and maintaining, in time and space, the correspondence between symbols and sensor data that refer to the same physical object in the external world.

The work presented in this thesis leverages notations found within perceptual anchoring to address the problem of real-world semantic world modeling, emphasizing, in particular, sensor-driven bottom-up acquisition of perceptual data. The proposed method for handling the attribute values that constitute the perceptual signature of an object is to first integrate and explore available resources of information, such as a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to classify objects on the perceptual level. In addition, a novel anchoring matching function is proposed. This function introduces both the theoretical procedure for comparing attribute values, as well as establishes the use of a learned model that approximates the anchoring matching problem. To verify the proposed method, an evaluation using human judgment to collect annotated ground truth data of real-world objects is further presented. The collected data is subsequently used to train and validate different classification algorithms, in order to learn how to correctly anchor objects, and thereby learn to invoke correct anchoring functionality.

There are, however, situations that are difficult to handle purely from the perspective of perceptual anchoring, e.g., situations where an object is moved during occlusion. In the absence of perceptual observations, it is necessary to couple the anchoring procedure with probabilistic object tracking to speculate about occluded objects, and hence, maintain a consistent world model. Motivated by the limitation in the original anchoring definition, which prohibited the modeling of the history of an object, an extension to the anchoring definition is also presented. This extension permits the historical trace of an anchored object to be maintained and used for the purpose of learning additional properties of an object, e.g., learning of the action applied to an object.

Towards a Generic Goal Model to Support Continuous Improvement in SME Construction Companies2015Ingår i: The Practice of Enterprise Modeling: 8th IFIP WG 8.1. Working Conference, PoEM 2015 Valencia, Spain, November 10–12, 2015 Proceedings / [ed] Jolita Ralyté, Sergio España, Óscar Pastor, Springer, 2015, s. 27-42Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Small and medium sized (SME) construction companies are often good at bricks, mortar and carpentry but not at management. However, it is often bad management that hinders companies to become financially sustainable over time and to grow. This paper presents a generic goal model aiming to support SME construction companies to systematically work with continuous improvement towards the overarching goal of becoming thriving businesses.

The goal model has been developed based on the principles of lean, balanced scorecards and the business canvas, as well as on a management consultants experiences from working with this kind of companies for many years.

An explorative study into the influence of business goals on the practical use of Enterprise Modelling methods and tools2001Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

An explorative study was carried out to investigate the intentions behind the use of Enterprise Modelling (EM) in organisations and to assess the implications of those intentions for EM tool support and participative EM. Some important conclusions are: 1) Participative EM should only be applied in consensus oriented organisational cultures and if properly applied it is a very strong way of committing stakeholders to business decisions, 2) The preparation of EM activities is critical and complex, meaning that it is not a task for novices, 3) Modelling experts prefer flexible and tools that give them methodological freedom, graphical power and reporting facilities, and 4) Future EM tools will need to cater for integration of methods.

Organizational Adoption of Enterprise Modeling Methods – Experience Based Recommendations2014Ingår i: The Practice of Enterprise Modeling / [ed] Frank, U., Pastor, O., Loucopoulos, P., Petrounias, I, Springer , 2014, s. 179-182Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Organizations normally begin using Enterprise Modeling (EM) within the context of a development project of some sort, where an outside vendor and/or consultant provide the method and related IT tool usage competence. If an organization uses EM sufficiently frequently it may be motivated to develop in-house EM competence and to acquire and adopt an EM method. The paper is an experience paper. It defines what it means to adopt an EM method in an organization and describes the process of adopting and institutionalizing EM as an organizational strategy to support continuous improvement and development. The process consists of three activities: deciding that an EM method should be adopted as part of the organization’s set of institutionalized methods, electing a suitable method and implementing the method.

Development and maintenance of guideline-based decision support for pharmacological treatment of hypertension2000Ingår i: Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine, ISSN 0169-2607, E-ISSN 1872-7565, Vol. 61, nr 3, s. 209-219Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The objective was to build a computer-based decision support system (DSS), which could apply the formal rules embedded in guidelines regarding pharmacological treatment of hypertension. The aim was also to test VISUAL BASIC as a development tool for DSS's in health care. From the Swedish guidelines for treatment of hypertension, the most widely accepted and scientifically best proved treatment strategies were chosen and implemented as rules. A DSS that is capable of applying the evidence-based rules extracted from guidelines regarding drug treatment of hypertension, to any patient's medical profile, was constructed. The output consists of a recommendation regarding preferred generic drug class and also a written report, reflecting decision steps provided by the rule-base and inference engine. We also provide methods for formalising an implementable language of guidelines. A mainstream programming language like VISUAL BASIC can be an alternative when building complicated decision support systems. A logic formal notation can facilitate communication between the expert and the programmer. The program is a stand-alone product independent of computerized medical records and thereby easy to install and maintain.

Toward Citizen-Centered Digital Government: Design Principles Guided Legacy System Renewal in A Swedish Municipality2024Ingår i: Proceedings of the 57th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences / [ed] Tung X. Bui, ScholarSpace , 2024, s. 1963-1972Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Transformation towards a digital government imposes significant demands on the capabilities of legacy infrastructure. We closely followed a Swedish municipality that designed and implemented a solution to improve the building permit application process with an aim to improve citizen service. We developed six design principles (DPs): availability, timeliness, actionability, transparency, personalization, and generalizability. These DPs guide the solution design and provide a seamless application experience for citizens and business owners. We also discuss the reasoning behind the design choices and the implications of the solution. The artifact encompasses understanding citizens’ needs, identifying constraints of the legacy systems, formulating design principles, and developing architectural designs. However, addressing the social aspects of legacy systems, such as organizational culture change, necessitates additional steps, and is worth investigation in future studies.

Gender as perspective in Informatics education: Identifying the potential2009Ingår i: Proceedings of the 32nd Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia, IRIS 32, 2009Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Gender as perspective has had a limited impact on Informatics educations. In this article it is argued that a key problem is that the potential gender as perspective has to enrich Informatics has not been fully explored. The aim with this research is to aid Informatics departments in this exploration by addressing the research question: What potential has gender as perspective to enrich the Informatics education? This research question is addressed in an ongoing action research project in which researchers cooperates with representatives for one Informatics department in Sweden. It was shown that at this particular department some work had been done to realize the potential of the gender-perspective but much was still to do. To understand the potential already implemented as well the not potential not yet explored the concepts of "power" and "voice" are introduced as ways of addressing gender. By using these concepts the following potential was identified: the systems development project is about power, the developer is an authority with an authoritative voice and with the power to listen to and give voice to other actors, a need of voice sensitive methods and that the artifact developed was an extension of the developer’s voice.

Identifying Difficulties in Including Gender in Informatics Education2009Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This article reports on the diagnosing phase of an Canonical action research project of the process of including gender into the Informatics education and the perceived difficulties for this inclusion. In this particular study a group of PhD-students in Informatics, their perception of gender and perception of difficulties in including gender into the Informatics education, is researched.  For the analysis of this research an analytic tool has been developed based on the perception of gender as being about knowledge but also an innovation with attributes such as Relative advantage, Compatibility, Complexity, Trialability and Observability. In the particular setting researched the two attributes in focus became Observability and Trialability. The action that is suggested to be taken is to communicate the need of a milieu to try gender on and that this work is observable to others at the department to the management of the department.

Making the Systemically Desirable Culturally Feasible: Towards the Integration of Gender-Knowledge into Informatics Study Programs2011Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation scrutinizes the problem domain of gender-knowledge integration into Swedish higher education study programs in informatics. This integration has been expressed as desirable by for example the Swedish government, individual universities and university colleges and the student union alike. In Swedish informatics study programs however, gender-knowledge seems to have been integrated to a limited extent and there is a dearth of research in this area as well. This indicates that gender-knowledge has so far only to a limited extent been recognized as important for Swedish informatics study programs. The purposes of this research is to 1) increase the insight of managers and developers of informatics study programs into the potential of gender-knowledge to enrich informatics as a subject; and to 2) inspire commitment and provide a means for the design of informatics study programs in which gender-knowledge is integrated. The overarching research question for this project is: What are the crucial challenges for a successful integration of gender-knowledge into Swedish informatics study programs?

To address the overarching research question, several studies have been conducted through scrutinizing documents like articles, reports, evaluations and syllabuses, as well as listening to the accounts of experiences of the gender-knowledge integration process communicated by lecturers, PhD students and study program coordinators following a hermeneutic research approach. The results of these studies indicate that the process of integrating gender-knowledge is challenging and that there is a need of support for getting the process up and running. For this, a guide that identifies different important questions to be addressed related to challenge categories like knowledge, organization, pedagogical, and resistance has been developed. The knowledge challenge seems to be particularly challenging hence special attention is paid to the development of a basic theoretical gender-knowledge base that, along with some concrete examples on how the basic theoretical gender-knowledge base, could be integrated into areas of concern for informatics study programs.

The different types of support suggested above should be considered food for thought and perhaps pointers of where to start looking. After all, only the local informatics community can integrate gender-knowledge into a study program in an enriching way thus making the systemically desirable culturally feasible.

Crossing Boundaries: Transferring eHealth services across the Northern Periphery2013Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Health care organisations in Finland, Norway, Scotland and Sweden face similar challenges when it comes to providing health services in the sparsely populated rural areas. Vast distances, centralized health services, harsh climate and limited access to public transport can make accessing health services difficult. In order to provide health services for the population of the Northern Periphery it is necessary to develop health care service models which can address the problems of isolation, remoteness and centralized health services. One way of overcoming these issues is to develop eHealth services that focus on increasing access to health services in the rural areas.

As health care organisations’ resources are often limited, the possibilities to develop, test and implement eHealth services can be restricted. Thus, transferring existing eHealth services across organisational and national boundaries can be beneficial, as the services have already been tested in practice. Taking advantage of the knowledge health care organisations in different countries have can support organisations in their drive to develop service provision models that reach out to the population of the Northern Periphery.

The main objective of this thesis is to understand how local conditions influence the outcomes of eHealth transfer. In order to do so the transnational implementation of five eHealth services was investigated in five case studies. This research gives insight into how differences in organisational structure, ICT infrastructure and the size of the patient base impact health care organisations’ possibility to transfer and utilize existing eHealth services. In addition, this research offers rich insights into how these factors impact the sustainability of eHealth services. The case studies also illustrate how stakeholder collaboration and knowledge exchange impact the process of transferring eHealth services, and how patients’ and professionals’ level of trust in eHealth services can materialize in practice. In addition, this thesis demonstrates why the benefits obtained with a specific eHealth service may, or may not be duplicable in another organisational context. The research discussed in this thesis also contributes to the understanding of how assessing organisational readiness prior to transferring and eHealth services can facilitate the implementation process.

    Abstract [en]

The scope of this paper is to „infuse‟ the so called work sys-tem approach (WSA) with a suggested theoretical basis. WSA is a ge-neric approach for understanding information systems in organizations with its aim set on high relevance. By relating the, so called, work practice approach the endeavor of the paper is to elaborate on actions as a theoretical and more rigorous basis for WSA. The results from this elaboration are then used to dispute some lines of criticism that has been raised against WSA. The study can be characterized as ex-plorative and the results points out a direction that states that further cross fertilization between the two approaches would be fruitful.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the paper is to explore a possible theoretical foundation for the `work system approach'. The concept of work systems has been suggested as the core object of study in the field of information systems. The scope of the work system approach is determined by pragmatic relevance and high comprehensibility, with the goal of being applicable for professionals in both IT and business as well as IS researchers. This approach has, however, been criticized for having theoretical shortcomings. In this paper, a theoretical foundation is suggested and explored by relating it to work practice theory and its roots in socio-instrumental pragmatism. The results show that it is both possible and fruitful to ground the work system approach theoretically in socio-instrumental actions.

Enterprise Adaptability Using a Capability-oriented Methodology and Tool Support2018Ingår i: PrOse 2018. Practicing Open Enterprise Modelling within OMiLAB: Proceedings / [ed] Dominik Bork, Jānis Grabis, Birger Lantow, CEUR-WS.org , 2018, s. 61-72Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Complex, dynamically changing business environments impose great need for adaptability, where the enterprise modelling discipline ought to provide relevant support. To investigate how capability-oriented methodologies, aimed to integrate contextual enterprise modelling with system design and runtime adjustments facilitate enterprise adaptability in dynamic contexts, we are using a case of an international financial institution facing, through a timeline of several years, different adverse events. Our scenario follows planned transitions towards improvements, by considering how unplanned disturbing events influence the main enterprise elements - strategy, goals, rules, actors and resources, business processes, as well as technical components; and how context modelling and design of capabilities could be utilized to respond to undesired business situations, by providing an adaptation roadmap for managing planned and unplanned changes. By utilizing our previously defined multi-dimensional framework for enterprise adaptability, we have analyzed how Capability Driven Development methodology complementing an enterprise modelling approach such as 4EM, could be applied to support successful business transformations, as well as we outline the requirements for supporting tools, in our case - ADOxx.

A lexical and semantical analysis on REST cloud computing APIs2018Ingår i: Cloud Computing and Service Science. CLOSER 2017: 7th International Conference, CLOSER 2017, Porto, Portugal, April 24–26, 2017, Revised Selected Papers / [ed] Donald Ferguson, Víctor Méndez Muñoz, Jorge Cardoso, Markus Helfert, Claus Pahl, Springer, 2018, s. 308-332Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Cloud computing is a popular Internet-based computing paradigm that provides on-demand computational services and resources, generally offered by Cloud providers’ REpresentational State Transfer (REST) APIs. Developers use REST APIs by invoking these APIs by their names and, thus, the lexicons used in the APIs are important to ease the developers’ comprehension. In this paper, we study the lexicons and the linguistic (anti)patterns from 16 providers of REST Cloud Computing APIs. We observe that, although the 16 REST APIs describe the same domain (Cloud computing), contrary to what one might expect, their lexicons do not share a large number of common terms and 90% of the terms (3,561/3,947) are just used by one provider. Thus, the APIs are lexically heterogeneous and there is not a consensus on which terms to use in Cloud computing. Further, we observe that the majority of the URIs, 54%, follow the Contextualised Resource Names pattern, which is considered a good practice in REST API design. However, a majority of the URIs, 62.82%, suffer from the Non-pertinent Documentation antipattern. Thus, we present three main contributions: (1) a tooled approach, called CloudLex, for extracting and analysing REST Cloud computing lexicons; (2) our analysis of the terms used in 16 REST APIs in 59,677 term occurrences; (3) our analysis of the linguistic (anti)patterns in more than 23,000 URIs of the 142 services of the 16 Cloud providers. We also show that CloudLex has an average precision of 84.82%, recall of 63.57%, and F1-measure of 71.03% on one complete API, Docker Engine, which confirms the accuracy of our semantic analyses for the detection of linguistic (anti)patterns. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Reputation as a product: Politicians in social media2011Ingår i: The second International Conference on Reputation, ICORE 2011, 2011Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Social media gives us all a new way to connect with each other; it also gives politicians a new way to connect with their voters. The old way was often through the press which gave little room for personal expressions. But have the politicians taken to using social media and if so in what way? To find out we constructed a persona with specific search criteria’s to find out which Swedish Members of Parliament were writing blogs and having facebook and Twitter accounts. The way they were being used was then catalogued. Our results indicate that roughly 50 percent of the 349 Members of Parliament in Sweden blog, roughly 75 percent have a facebook account and roughly 20 percent Twitter. The overall conclusions points to Swedish Members of Parliament having a decentralized and personal way of using social media. The Swedish Parliament has some ways to go before they can fully participate and deliberate with the people of Sweden through social media.

Defining the 'D' in ICT4D: Graduate Papers on Development, Globalisation, and ICT2009Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

IPID – the International Network for Postgraduate students in ICT4D – arranged a course in the academic year 2008/2009 as a response to several requests from IPID members for an introduction to development theories and for guidance in how to define the ‘D’ in the expression ICT4D.

The aim of the course “Development, Globalisation and ICT (Defining the ’D’ in ICT4D) – 7.5 ECTS” was thus to provide a sound foundation for advanced studies in ICT4D. The course was designed to provide insights into some of the most influential development theories. The selection was made on the basis of classical bodies of ideas with strong impact on recent notions of development.

Devoted scholars from relevant fields were invited to lecture and comment on student papers. Postgraduate students from all over the world registered for the course. Video recording was used to provide access to the lectures for those who could not attend. In the event we have eleven completed papers, which are presented in this report.

    Framing the written sign1997Ingår i: Digital Creativity, ISSN 1462-6268, Vol. 8, nr 2, s. 67-73Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper concerns certain aspects of writing in the computer era, aspects that are relevant to linguists but should also be of interest to people working with computer graphis and the human-computer interface. Technology changes patterns of communication by introducing new means of communication, but it also changes our *notion* of human communication. This can be noted from the history of writing: different writings systems seem to have inspired different conceptions of human language. Here, notions of what constitutes writing and written signs will be focussed on. The paper discusses how the material properties of writing affect the pattern of communication particularly at the 'low' level where signs are recognised and processed. Special attention is given to colour and animation in texts: the possibilities provided by a computerised writing surface are contrasted with a recently proposed theory of writing where spatiality (but not visuality) and stability are seen as the primary physical factors on which writing of any sort is founded

    Abstract [en]

There is a discussion in Information Systems as well as in Linguistics about "the relations between symbols and the subject matter they represent". This chapter highlights that relation, on the basis of Langefors three information roles (the pragmatic, semantic and syntactic role), and on criticism of the division of linguistics into pragmatics, semantics and syntax. It appears that by understanding the more mechanical Information Systems, we can illustrate weaknesses in humanistic linguistics, which in turn can illustrate the development of concepts within Information Systems
