The Historicized ‘Self’ and the Hungry ‘Other’: Geopolitical Imaginations in Greek Television Comedy Oi Aparadektoi/The Unacceptables2015Inngår i: Filmicon: Journal of Greek Film Studies, E-ISSN 2241-6692, nr 3, s. 32-48Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Popular geopolitics has recognized in popular culture a platform where geopolitical imaginations are created and discursive constructions of ‘self’ and ‘other’ take place. However, limited work has been done on the employment of specific methodological tools of Critical Discourse Analysis on popular culture texts. This article attempts a hands-on analysis on an episode of a popular product of Greek television fiction (Oi Aparadektoi), and constitutes a combination of theoretical discussion, on one hand, and data presentation and analysis, on the other. Building on a growing body of literature arguing in favor of popular culture’s value for study of politics, the main argument is that television fiction can, and should be, included in investigations of the (geo)politics of the contemporary world and the politics of (national) identity, while special focus is placed on how a discourse-oriented approach can be adopted for the study of products of television fiction.

The Private Life of a Nation in Crisis: A Study on the Politics in/of Greek Television Fiction2018Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The private life of a nation in crisis offers in-depth studies of the fictional reconstruction and negotiation of moments of heightened societal tension that take place throughout the life of a nation. Its constituent papers focus on the role of television fiction in representing and shaping either critical moments, events, or periods that disrupt the normal pace of life, or unresolved societal tensions that become part of everyday life. What is more, the papers investigate the socio-cultural consequences of representations, in terms of the interpretative lenses television fiction provides for understanding the events as such. The empirical focus is placed on television fiction produced and broadcast in Greece, a country that has recently received a large share of publicity because of its protagonistic role in the late 2000s Eurozone crisis and, at the same time, a media landscape with multiple aspects that still remain uncharted. The thesis contains case studies from different periods of Greek television fiction, from 1989 – the year of the launch of the first private channels in Greece – onwards, in an attempt to connect the overall project to the production context characterizing commercial television, another aspect of European television in the process of continuous exploration. Through a close analysis of specific television programmes, as well as a complementary study of the production culture of private television in Greece, this thesis aspires to contribute to the general question regarding the role of the media in critical, uncertain, or tumultuous times, with an emphasis on television fiction’s potential to recode their meaning and to reflect back on society.

[TV review] Maestro/Maestro in Blue (MEGA TV/Netflix, 2022-)2023Inngår i: Filmicon: Journal of Greek Film Studies, ISSN 2241-6692, nr 8, s. 142-149Artikkel, omtale (Annet (populærvitenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [en]

Christopher (Christoforos) Papakaliatis is one of Greece’s most recognizable and successful “television authors” and Maestro in Blue, his latest creation, is the series that managed to turn Greece into a “Netflix nation”, both in the sense of a country being included in the global streaming service’s catalogue and in terms of a national television market being potentially “transformed by a foreign entrant affecting on many levels” (Lobato 2019: xi). On 19 December 2022, Maestro in Blue became the first Greek fiction show to launch on Netflix and the present review provides a critical reading of the series, based on an overview of its major strengths and weaknesses, as well as some additional reflections departing from the critical reception of the series, together with some concluding thoughts about the significance of small television nations being represented in the larger streaming universe.

En kris, tre parter: Retorisk analys av Scandinavian Airlines, Svensk Pilotförenings och SvenskaFlygbranschens externa kriskommunikation2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Artificial Agendas: Polarization and Partisanship in the Turkish Mainstream Media through Fake News2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis revolves around the subject of fake news, a phenomenon that has been highly discussed with the advent of the internet-based media. It aims to shed light on the problem of fake news and its implications in the Turkish mainstream media by mainly departing from the discourse theory, as well as by using additional theoretical approaches over fake news and media in polarized settings. In that sense, five research questions were developed to understand how fake news items disseminate in the Turkish media ecosystem, and what this could mean for the Turkish mainstream media specifically from the contexts of political partisanship and polarization. In order to answer the research questions, a total number of 687 fake news items have been analyzed in three different data sets. After providing an overall picture of the problem of fake news in the Turkish media ecosystem, the thesis specifically focuses on fake news items that circulate within the Turkish mainstream media. Overall, 77 fake news items are further subjected to an analysis of discourse activity schema in order to find out the narratives that the fake news items are connected to the Turkish political and social context. The research shows that the use of fake news items in the Turkish mainstream media indicates divergent and conflicting epistemologies over certain social and political themes, which are government- opposition divide, secular religious divide, economy, and education. Moreover, the research also indicates that certain social and political themes are under the discursive hegemony of certain groups within the Turkish mainstream media organizations. These themes are found to be anti-immigration, anti-US, anti-Israel, and FETO. Eventually, two main points are discussed in relation to the given theoretical background. First, the problem of fake news in the Turkish mainstream media indicates a damaged understanding of journalism in the country, which requires a reorientation and reexamination. Second, media in polarized settings may increase partisan alignments and divergent epistemologies, which can lead to the use of fake news items in order to empower certain agendas.

Barriers to Women Journalists in sub-Saharan Africa2020Rapport (Annet (populærvitenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [en]

Barriers to Women Journalists identifies obstacles hindering women in sub-Saharan Africa from entering, progressing, and/or staying in journalism. The main objective of this study is to assess the status of women in journalism in sub-Saharan Africa. This report identifies a number of obstacles hindering women journalists, and locates possible strategies, responses and interventions that might increase the number of women journalists in sub-Saharan Africa, at various career levels. The aims and objectives of this study are broken down into three research questions.

    1.    What are the lived experiences of women journalists in sub-Saharan Africa, in terms of barriers of entry, progression and staying in the profession?

    2.    Why do these barriers exist?

    3.    How are and might these barriers be challenged in a way that results in an increase in the number, progression and retention of women journalists in sub-Saharan Africa?

    Abstract [en]

Journalism has changed in many ways in today's society. The emergence of digitization has created a new format for journalists to work on. Social media is an example of that and one of the largest reasons for the development that has taken place. Today´s journalists must work at a high speed to produce as much news as possible but especially know how to use social media platforms to reach out and attract an audience both for private use and at work. For journalists social media is a way to create interaction and participation. Journalists get the opportunity to be personal and create their own branding in the text. But where does the limit go from being objective and personal? Can it harm the journalists credibility and the ideal concept objectivite if they expose personal opinions and emotions? In this study six journalist from three huge swedish news media – Svenska Dagbladet (SvD), Aftonbladet och SVT has been chosen whose purpose is to examined the balance between being personal and objective as a journalist on social media that proceeds from the questions:

    1. In what way does six professional journalist from Svenska dagbladet (SvD), Aftonbladet och SVT use social media platforms in their work respectively in their personal life?2. In what way do interviewees feel that social media can influence the role of the journalist?

The results show that these journalists have similar answers and opinions about how they use social media platforms for personal use and at work. They said that not a day goes by without them using social media. The majority also said that social media can iibe useful for their daily work and to build a relationship with the audience because it can create trust among them. Although they can see a potential danger for the journalists occupation. Therefore the results show that the journalist thinks it's hard to know where the border goes, and as a reason for that they often say that every newsroom does not have a unified approach to the situation.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to investigate the subject of young people's communication on social media linked to the concepts of cyberbullying, cyber-love and digital competence. With qualitative methods, focus group interview and interview, four children, two parents and a teacher were interviewed. In the essay, their reflections and perspectives on how they view young people's communication that takes place on socialmedia are highlighted. Previous research shows that the concept of digital competence is difficult to define and there are different interpretations of what the ability to have good digital competence actually means. Research shows that there are tendencies to generalize that all children and young people can handle digitalisation, just because they are born into a time where digital and social media characterize everyday life. The results show that cyberbullying and cyber-love take place in social media. The children surveyed learn to handle communication on social media on their own. To some extent, children have strategies for dealing with online hate and the use of social media, but not to the extent needed. The results also show that both the surveyed parents and the teacher express that there is a need to develop more digital competence and adult participation plays a role in children's development of digital competence.

Ett (o)frivilligt uppkopplat liv: En kvalitativ studie om individers sociala medier vanor.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Changing the narratives of marginalised bodies - a study about body positivism2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to explain and analyse the body positivity movement in the social media platform Instagram, as well as its empowering effects on women active in this movement. The phenomenon based on visuality, body positivism, has more than three million pictures on Instagram, hashtagged under two popular hashtags examined in this thesis: #bodypositivity and #bodypositive. The goal of this movement is to show diversity in the portrayal of women, as well as to encourage acceptance of all body types, skin colours and body flaws - especially marginalised bodies that are often invisible in the current society. The research is conducted with methods of visual content analysis and interviews with women participating in the body positivity movement. This study is framed in feminism theory and this study includes theories of gender-norms, Western beauty standards, the male gaze and questions about identity and body image. The results of this study show that most of the people participating in the movement are white women and are pictured often in their underwear. In the pictures hashtagged with body positivity related hashtags, there are, however, not that many flaws visible - such as cellulite or stretch marks. Nevertheless, after interviewing the women active in this movement - active as picture publishers, conversation holders and as body positive Instagram-user followers - this movement is empowering to the women and helps develop a positive body image and better self-esteem. In addition, this phenomenon can change the narratives of the people with marginalised bodies and modify the image of how women are represented and portrayed in society.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The studied phenomenon is that of police brutality against African Americans, along with the adjacent demonstrations and civil mobilizations that were born out of said phenomenon. This study set out to unveil the way in which Swedish print journalism has constructed the brutal beating of Rodney King and the death of George Floyd, along with the social response following those events. Other central questions have been: What discourses are present in the material, and how does the reporting relate to the protest paradigm? A critical perspective in accordance with Critical Discourse Analysis’ and Postcolonialism’s theoretical foundations has guided this study all the way from its developmental stages to its finalization. Carvalho’s (2008) analytical model, developed for critical discourse studies of journalistic texts, constitutes the methodological frame of the study. The results of the study can be summarized as follows:Heavy stereotyping is present in the material revolving around the LA riots, and an apparent fact is that the African American actors have had minimal input on the way they are constructed in the texts. Mainly political or other authoritative actors are present and heard in the material. The construction of the events has thereby been the product of the other, predominantly white, side of the social conflict, that reasonably wants to put itself in a good light while doing the opposite with their African American opposition. Considerable improvements are apparent since the King era but the flaws in the reporting are still obvious. A discourse of protesters as violent, unlawful individuals is still largely present in the material, although their social struggle is legitimized to a larger margin than in the past. In both King’s and Floyd’s case, opinionated journalism shows a tendency to break free from the dehumanizing patterns of reporting. The discourses present there are significantly more pro-protester and pro-social justice. iiThese results show the urgent need for future journalists to challenge the protest paradigm in their reporting, along with a need to consider and adapt to the underlying repressive effect that our journalistic traditions have on the medial representations of status-quo defying activism. Taking these findings into account is a necessary means to pave the way for a continually positive evolution of journalistic discourse.

    Abstract [sv]

Purpose and framing of the question: To study how Aftonbladet’s news values and news selection have changed in the last two decades.

Method and material: Quantitative study in form of a coding scheme covering Aftonbladet’s front pages in the month of march of 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015.

Main result: Both news selection and news value remains in the bigger perspective unchanged, indicating that the newspaper print version is rather unaffected by the change of online journalism. That in turn indicates that the gatekeeper role more or less remains the same for the print version of Aftonbladet.

Är det här Amerika?: En kvalitativ studie om musikvideon “This is America” och dess plats i den samhälleliga kontexten.2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how hegemonic gender norms are reproduced and resisted in the seventh season of the Swedish reality show Gift vid första ögonkastet. Through the lens of Butler's theory of performativity, the study uses Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis to uncover the hidden ideologies in the language used in the show.

The show’s material consists of the contestants and their discussions, as well as a panel of experts who guide both the audience and the contestants in their relationship struggles. The language analyzed is that of both the contestants and the experts. With a selection of fourteen scenes, the study aims to analyze how the language used can establish and reproduce hegemonic gender norms as well as reject and resist said norms.

The results show that the reproduction of hegemonic gender norms is mainly achieved by differentially ascribing certain attributes to women and others to men. Resistance against hegemonic gender norms by contestants is almost exclusively enacted by the show’s women, mainly by pointing out to the men their use of heterosexist language and demanding them to participate in traditionally feminine behavior. This demand leads to a new masculine gender norm in the studied context, a norm which differs from the one the show’s men usually participate in. The results also show that the panel of experts have an amplifying function: As part of the production apparatus, they elevate certain subjects and disputes to create particular narratives.

Social media addiction and sexual dysfunction among Iranian women: The mediating role of intimacy and social support.2019Inngår i: Journal of Behavioral Addictions, ISSN 2062-5871, E-ISSN 2063-5303, Vol. 8, nr 2, s. 318-325Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Social media use has become increasingly popular among Internet users. Given the widespread use of social media on smartphones, there is an increasing need for research examining the impact of the use of such technologies on sexual relationships and their constructs such as intimacy, satisfaction, and sexual function. However, little is known about the underlying mechanism why social media addiction impacts on sexual distress. This study investigated whether two constructs (intimacy and perceived social support) were mediators in the association of social media addiction and sexual distress among married women.

METHODS: A prospective study was conducted where all participants (N = 938; mean age = 36.5 years) completed the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale to assess social media addiction, the Female Sexual Distress Scale - Revised to assess sexual distress, the Unidimensional Relationship Closeness Scale to assess intimacy, and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support to assess perceived social support.

RESULTS: The results showed that social media addiction had direct and indirect (via intimacy and perceived social support) effects on sexual function and sexual distress.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study facilitate a better understanding of how problematic engaging to social media can affect couples' intimacy, perceived social support, and constructs of sexual function. Consequently, sexual counseling should be considered an essential element for assessing individual behaviors in the context of social media use.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the boundaries and limitations of the diffusion of "development journalism" among both the editorial body and the journalist body in the Egyptian newsrooms after the 2011 Arab Spring. Newsrooms under study represent different perspectives including state-owned, private-independent, and opposition newspapers. Through in-depth interviews with thirty-seven editors in chief and journalists, the authors studied how the editors and journalists at each newspaper define development journalism, whether the diffusion of development journalism follows a top-down or bottom-up approach, and if development journalism could influence the setting of the news agenda. Results show that the differences are not only apparent in the way development journalism is defined inside the different news organizations, but also between managers and journalists within each. Organizational structures and technological developments are as well factors that affect the way development journalism is diffused inside newsrooms.

Imagining intelligent artefacts: Myths and a digital sublime regarding artificial intelligence in Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Artificial intelligence (AI) has over the past years become a hot topic for discussion in Sweden, as the technology presents exciting unique possibilities and challenges for the country and its citizens. Coverage of AI in Swedish news media presents imagined scenarios with both current and future AI that contribute to myths about how the technology is able to radically transform life, that spring out of a central digital sublime. Through a mixed-method study of 55 newspaper items about AI from Svenska Dagbladet from 2017 to 2018, the thesis studies what evident AI myths occur in coverage and how such discourses spring out digital sublime regarding AI. A total of four AI myths are found in news media coverage that revolve around existing and future intelligent computers, robots, machines and perceptions with them. Myths and hopes and concerns with them point to digital sublime regarding AI as a force of intelligent digitization that promises to empower a sublime citizen, economy, and welfare state. Emotional values with sublime AI are understood to reflect a general Swedish techno-optimism as digital artefacts have allowed Sweden to become prosperous.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter focuses on the basis of Nordic research, present data about the incidence, types and consequences of scandals in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden as well as discuss the political and societal effects of scandal journalism. It discusses the way in which mediated political scandals are launched, dramatized and interpreted. For Nordic news media, information on norm violations that can be reported, staged and dramatized as a political scandal is a competitive resource and a strategic, market-related investment in terms of reputation and audience interest. In practice, professional standards in Nordic scandal journalism vary considerably. The most typical Nordic “sex scandals” are accusations of rape or sexual harassment, buying sexual services from prostitutes or intercourse with minors, actions prohibited by law. Several factors may have influenced the increased importance of scandals in Nordic countries after the millennium. The liberalization and deregulation of the public sector in all Nordic countries has created opportunities for more private competition, but it has also increased the importance of lobbyism.

    Abstract [en]

Among the questions discussed is how important are the norm violations that have led to political scandals? Have the types of scandals changed over time? How may rivals and political opponents use mediated scandals? Are character assassination and demonization typical traits of a scandalization process? Are male and female politicians treated differently? Scandalous! is based on case studies and content analyses of mediated political scandals in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, including an analysis of the frequencies, types, characteristics and consequences of national political scandals in 1980 – 2010.

    Abstract [en]

The development of social media applications, such as blogs, Facebook and Twitter, has offered new participatory opportunities to everyday media users. In some respects, this also marks a transformation of public space, as the broadcasting era’s “audiences” nowadays also can take on the role as participating “co-creators”. Or to put it slightly differently: Contemporary media landscape allows for new forms of coexistence between producer and user generated content. For traditional media companies, this transformation has brought both challenges and opportunities. User generated content has always played a part in media production, but the current media situation has certainly made it a more salient feature. Among online newspapers, specifically, the new opportunities to include users’ participatory practices have taken different forms. For instance, they nowadays allow for convenient Facebook-liking and users linking blog posts to articles. They also spend both time and energy on making it easier for readers to get in touch with them in order to provide pictures, information, corrections, etc. Within this context of offering new, participatory opportunities to the previous “readers”, online newspapers have also come to adapt to and develop on one specifically salient strategy: To allow readers/users to comment on articles online. Media research has already paid attention to user comments as a participatory practice. These studies have typically looked into what technological features for participation that are offered and how they enable and limit users’ participatory practices (cf. Domingo et al., 2008; Hermida & Thurman, 2008). In this paper, we take on a slightly different approach. Firstly, the paper looks into the conditions for participation in terms of topics: What content are users allowed to comment on? How do content characteristics differ between news that are made available and news that are withheld from comments? After having mapped these conditions for participation we – secondly –analyze how users actually navigate within this (conditioned) space: What news are they interested in commenting on? How does commenting vary between different kinds of articles? These questions are answered by help of an analysis of 1.100 news items and their adjacent user interface in an online news site (affiliated with a professionally produced, local newspaper). In terms of methodology we apply quantitative content analysis. Our analysis reveals that the participatory space offered to the readers is geared towards light news, whereas users themselves have clear preferences for commenting news concerning changes in their local environment, about general national politics and welfare issues. The paper concludes with a discussion on potential explanations as to why this discrepancy exists and it also further reflects on its potential implications for users’ participatory practices.

    Abstract [en]

During the Covid-19 pandemic, public campaigns were an important part of the Scandinavian health authorities’ strategies to combat the spread of the virus. Denmark, Norway, and Sweden had different strategies to manage the crisis: Denmark had the most political crisis management, Sweden the most informational, and Norway was placed somewhere in between. This chapter examines how public risk and crisis communication during a pandemic was handled in these campaigns in the Scandinavian countries, how they function as a governance technology, and how this was carried out rhetorically. We show how indirect, governmental steering dominated the campaign rhetoric in Scandinavia, through a focus on the culturally decided aspects of purity and danger, and through appeal to a sense of personal responsibility and willingness to avoid taking risks among the citizenry. Furthermore, we find that the campaigns are representative for the crisis management strategy in each country.

    Abstract [sv]

When You Wish Upon a Character Banner: An Exploratory Discourse Analysis of a Genshin Impact Player Community2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

An exploratory discourse analysis was performed on a community of practice based on Discord, an instant messaging platform. The community of practice is a group of gamers (people who play video games), dedicated to the cross-platform free-to-play game Genshin Impact. A corpus of messages was gathered from the community’s public message logs, which spanned a period of three days during the release of Genshin Impact’s most financially lucrative character banner. From the corpus, numerous themes in players’ discussions have been observed; such as reactions to the gacha’s probability system, displays of problem gaming, sexualization of female characters, and opinions regarding monetization & the game’s developers. This study would be beneficial for future studies that pertain to player behavior and gamer culture that can also use communities of practice on platforms such as Discord, in order to gain insight into niche communities of engaged users.

Be beautiful and speak up: Africana beauty at the forefront of an inclusive Internet beauty culture.2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The beauty industry has been booming in the last few years, generating immense profits as it now translates into an Internet global beauty culture in its own right that finally made room for women of color. As research barely mentions African women and their diasporas, this study aims to critically analyze the dynamic of this North American-dominated Internet beauty culture celebrating non-white women, looking at how it impacts African women and their diasporas and participates in affirming a global woman of color through commodity capitalism.

Based on discourse analysis of multiple actors in the industry using popular culture sources, I then conducted a critical feminist autoethnography of my beauty journey, put in perspective with the results of decolonial interviews with African and African diaspora women recruited online. I asked about their relationship with the beauty industry and their opinions on some arguments I made. Self and collective analysis demonstrated the emergence of an African diasporic hybrid beauty culture, empowering women to feel like actors of change.

How to Extract and Analyze Twitter Data Using Mecodify2022Annet (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

As a social networking and microblogging platform that allows communication with short messages, Twitter has the potential of being used by social scientists to study users, uses, and societal communication and networking online. This How-to Guide introduces practical steps on how to extract and analyze Twitter data using the Mecodify open-source tool as a demonstration of using one of the widely used tools to do Twitter research. The intention behind using just one tool is to shorten the reader’s learning curve through a brief but practical introduction to an established open-source tool that is meant to make Twitter research more intuitive and easier to do. Readers who wish to explore the field further are encouraged to experiment with other tools that have richer features such as advanced correlation and regression analysis and artificial intelligence-driven natural language processing, which are beyond the scope of this guide.

How Do Social Media Users Link Different Types of Extreme Events to Climate Change?: A Study of Twitter During 2008–20172019Inngår i: Journal of Extreme Events, ISSN 2345-7376, Vol. 6, nr 2Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines how three types of extreme events (heat waves, droughts, floods) are mentioned together with climate change on social media. English-language Twitter use during 2008–2017 is analyzed, based on 1,127,996 tweets (including retweets). Frequencies and spikes of activity are compared and theoretically interpreted as reflecting complex relations between the extreme event factor (the occurrence of an extreme event); the media ecology factor (climate-change oriented statements/actions in the overall media landscape) and the digital action factor (activities on Twitter). Flooding was found to be by far the most tweeted of the three in connection to climate change, followed by droughts and heat waves. It also led when comparing spikes of activity. The dominance of floods is highly prevalent from 2014 onwards, triggered by flooding events (extreme event factor), the climate science controversy in US politics (media ecology factor) and the viral power of celebrities’ tweets (digital action factor).

Could blockchain save journalism? : An explorative study of blockchain’s potential to make journalism a more sustainable business2019Inngår i: Blockchain and Web 3.0: Social, Economic, and Technological Challenges / [ed] Massimo Ragnedda & Giuseppe Destefanis, London: Routledge, 2019, 1, s. 97-113Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Ever since the Bitcoin phenomenon gained momentum in recent years, much has been written about blockchain applications and prospects in the FinTech industry, business and healthcare. Yet, very little if any scholarly work has been done to study how the peer-to-peer, decentralized and highly disruptive blockchain technology may impact or be used by news media and journalists. This article is an effort to contribute to the body of scholarship on journalism as well as distributed ledger technologies (DLTs) by exploring blockchain’s potential applications and challenges when dealing with journalism's most fundamental pillars such as fact checking, data gathering and analysis.

The study explores two case studies demonstrating distinct uses of permissionless blockchains. The first revolves around blockchains as a source of information that could be used by data journalists to extract valuable insights regarding payment transactions and network formation as illustrated by the investigative reporting done on the 2017 WannaCry ransomware attack.

The second case study is around the use of the technology as a basis for revolutionizing journalism as an industry by leveraging the technology’s core characteristics, namely decentralisation, immutability and transparency. The latter case study will look into two ongoing journalistic projects namely the Distributed News Network and Civil, which promise allowing the creation and management of content without centralized control or even a centralized newsroom in ways that could effectively limit the spread of fake news and propaganda.

The paper analyses the objectives, methods and limitations of the case studies and uses interviews and content analysis of empirical data obtained from primary sources. By reflecting on Rogers’ theory of the diffusion of innovation, the study assesses the impact of blockchains in comparison to other earlier technologies such as the diffusion of the Internet.

It is hoped that the conclusions drawn from this study could help inform journalists and media about the potential uses and limitations of blockchain technology in journalism as well as initiate a scholarly curiosity with a futuristic outlook to understanding the role of cutting edge and disruptive technologies on society.

External Digital Communication of Employer Branding Inclusivity: A Multiple Case Study:CGI Inc., Nexer Group & Toxic Interactive Solutions2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background: To win the “war for talent” and recruit highly skilled candidates, employers need to distinguish themselves from their competitors by securing employer-of-choice (EOC) status. In competitive industries such as information technology (IT), companies focus on shaping unique employer branding (EB) strategies to help find or retain top talent and the indispensable edge or advantages that come along with them. At the same time, diverse IT employees are contending with different forms of prejudice and discrimination within the industry, making it essential for companies to clearly present their agendas of diversity and inclusivity through EB that communicates a “great place to work” for employees.

Purpose: While there are various bodies of EB-focused research, few studies have empirically explored how diversity and inclusion are communicated across industries. Accordingly, this study explores the use of external digital communication for promoting EB inclusivity deployed by the human resources (HR) and marketing departments of IT companies.

Method: This study uses exploratory research within a qualitative research design, along with an abductive approach, preexisting theories, and empirical data gathered from seven semi-structured interviews and digital communication materials from three IT companies: CGI, Nexer, and Toxic. The data is analyzed using the Gioia method and content analysis. Finally, a revised conceptual framework is developed.

Conclusion: The results of this study show that a range of external digital communication channels are needed to effectively communicate EB inclusivity. This can be achieved by portraying diversity and inclusion in different dimensions, in addition to successful diversity- and inclusion-driven projects, initiatives, and storytelling. It is essential to highlight different demographics within the company, for instance, from junior and senior, to male and female employees, as well as individuals from underrepresented groups. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the IT industry is in a state of continuous innovation and evolution while also being highly competitive in terms of securing top recruits who can choose between their prospective employers. There is also a need to gain wider perspectives when creating IT solutions for diverse groups worldwide and there is a clear shortage of women in the industry. Therefore, it is important for IT companies to communicate their EB with diversity and inclusion in mind — and in practice through using the revised framework that presents relevant actors, tools, communication channels, and dimensions of D&I. On a managerial level, local and international actors are recommended to work in close collaboration, utilize modern technology, and follow up their external communication to attract potential employees who may one day become ambassadors for the company.
