Influential Factors in IT Outsourcing Relationships in a Swedish Municipality: A Client and Vendor Perspective2017Inngår i: International Journal of Innovation in the Digital Economy, ISSN 1947-8305, E-ISSN 1947-8313, Vol. 8, nr 3, 1Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Information Technology Outsourcing (ITO) has generated considerable interest within Information Systems (IS) research as a consequence of its benefits in terms of cost efficiency and freedom to focus on core capabilities. This study covers the area of ITO in the public sector, specifically, in Swedish Municipalities where ITO has become a mainstream strategy. The influential ITO factors of the post-contract stage of an ITO relationship are examined and debated in light of existent research literature. The research is based on a case study of a Swedish Municipality and a direct IT vendor. A thematic analysis brings light upon three new ITO influential factors which are: (1) mutual understanding and long-term engagement; (2) Multi-sourcing, and (3) Communication between Municipalities, together with other seven factors present in the research literature that have an influence on the ITO relationship. The findings of this study can support ITO decision-makers from Swedish municipalities in improving the ITO relationship between their organizations and IT vendors.

The Influence of Organizational Politics on Business-IT Alignment2016Inngår i: International Journal of IT - Business Alignment and Governance, ISSN 1947-9611, E-ISSN 1947-962X, Vol. 7, nr 2Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Business-IT alignment continues to remain a top management concern. Regardless of ample research, achieving and sustaining business-IT alignment remains challenging to organization's management. To this day, the influence of organizational politics remains unstudied in the light of business-IT alignment. By performing a case study in a large organization in Sweden, the authors present and discuss how organizational politics influences business-IT alignment from the viewpoint of practitioners. They find that organizational politics has a negative influence on communications, partnering, IT governance, IT scope, and business and IT skills of the Strategic Alignment Maturity model. Furthermore, the authors identified several root causes for organizational politics in the business-IT alignment context, not addressed by the commonly used business-IT alignment constructs. The findings of this research study are useful to business and IT practitioners for achieving and sustaining business-IT alignment in their organizations considering the influence of organizational politics.

The Strategic Role of Information Technology in a Multinational Company: A Case of an Organization with Subsidiaries in Egypt and Sweden2011Inngår i: Cases on Business and Management in the MENA Region: New Trends and Opportunities, IGI Global , 2011, 135-155 s.Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this case study research is to study the strategic role that information technology ( IT) plays in two subsidiaries - located in Egypt and Sweden - of a multinational company with a federal organizational structure. Using a well-established evaluation framework and a widely accepted model, we examine two important aspects of the strategic role of IT: i) how IT supports business and organizational strategy; and ii) the maturity of business and IT strategy alignment. The case study discusses the importance of having a balanced relationship among business strategy, information strategy, organizational strategy, and the way in which business and IT managers should act to improve business-IT alignment, also referred to as strategic alignment. Based on the results of the comparative analysis of the two companies, the research presents concrete recommendations that IT decision-makers from the two subsidiaries of the multinational company should consider to improve IT performance.

ERP Systems Implementation: Characteristics and Critical Success Factors. A Case Study of Electrolux2007Inngår i: Proceedings of the 8th IBIMA Conference, 2007, 501-508 s.Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The new era of business information systems promises a sagacity of information flow among different modules and departments within an organization. In this context Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems or enterprise systems are playing today a crucial part and their advantages and benefits gained are noteworthy. Therefore the paper has analyzed and identified which are the key aspects of the ERP systems implementation such as their critical success factors and their characteristics using as a case study Electrolux that has continue to maintain their strategic advantage on the business market in spite that the competitors have implemented global ERP systems versus the local ERP systems implemented by Electrolux. Based upon the review of other ERP systems implementation our research has looked mainly to highlight the processes streamlined by using local ERP systems that are integrated now in Electrolux which is in fact a global organisation. The main research questions addressed in the paper were looking to: (1) Highlight the characteristics of the ERP systems that are essential for any enterprise system and in particular in the case of Electrolux ERP system; (2) The examination of the different critical success factors of an ERP system implementation in order to improve the organization business information flow: (3) The investigation of how can organizations improve their practices in successful implementation of their ERP systems. Finally the research paper it is analyzing why in the designing phase of different processes, it is important to involve both the customers and the users with their needs which in case of Electrolux has due to the increased of their benefits from ERP systems implementation locally.

An Organizational Culture Perspective in Business-IT Alignment2012Inngår i: International Journal of IT - Business Alignment and Governance, ISSN 1947-9611, E-ISSN 1947-962X, Vol. 3, nr 1, 1-26 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Business-IT alignment (BITA) has gained attention during the last decade. As a result, a number of theoretical models that can be applied as supportive tools for assessing different components of BITA have been developed. However, most of these efforts have been produced in different countries and they ignore the factor that’s subjected to change due to cultural contexts. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of organizational culture on achieving BITA and influences its maturity. The research method and process follows the design science research and is done in three phases. First, an in-depth literature survey followed by a survey was carried out to identify and classify limitations of BITA attributes (based on Luftman’s strategic alignment maturity (SAM)) model and then, hypothesize the potential impact of organizational culture element (based on the Smit et al. model) on BITA attributes. Second, an empirical study is carried out to test the hypotheses in order to identify the limited BITA attributes based on organizational culture context. These attributes are further classified for proposing an extended version to the SAM model. Finally, the extended-SAM model is evaluated in 6 Swedish large and medium organizations to test its practicality for comparing its assessment with the assessment of the original SAM model.

IT Alignment in Public Organizations: A Systematic Literature Review2017Inngår i: Information Technology Governance in Public Organizations: Theory and Practice / [ed] Lazar Rusu, Gianluigi Viscusi, Cham, Switzerland: Springer, 2017, nr 0, 27-57 s.Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

IT alignment is one of the widely researched topics in the information systems research area and continue to be a top management concern. However, IT alignment in the context of public organizations is still less explored. A systematic literature review is conducted to provide an overview of the current status of the research in this area and the possible future research directions. Major databases and top conference proceedings in information systems and e-government area were searched by using key words to collect articles for analysis. Finally, a total of 58 articles were identified and included in the literature review. The findings of this study indicate case study research as the most preferred research method. But due to the small numbers of public organizations explored in these studies the results are problematic for generalisation. Apart from these findings we have identified and discussed the research concepts addressed in IT alignment in public organizations studies that were categorized using the dimensions of Strategic Alignment Maturity model. The findings of this study have revealed some potential future research directions that have been less explored like organizational culture, organizational politics, social interaction, and informal organizational structure influence on IT alignment in public organizations.

Assessing the risk exposure in IT outsourcing for large companies2011Inngår i: International Journal of Information Technology and Management, ISSN 1461-4111, E-ISSN 1741-5179, Vol. 10, nr 1, 24-44 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The decision process for companies to outsource information technology (IT) or not is a substantial business change and in many cases the competence to take such decisions is limited and has major consequences for the company's future performance. In this context, the paper is presenting the design of an information technology outsourcing (ITO) tool that includes a procedure based on transaction cost theory (TCT) for assessing the risk exposure in ITO. The ITO tool presented in this paper is a useful and effective instrument for the IT decision-makers in support of decisions to outsource IT or not. In the development of the ITO tool, we have approached two large companies in Sweden with more than 20 years experiences in ITO that helped us in the improvement and evaluation of the usability and effectiveness of this tool.

Managing the Reliable Design of an Enterprise IT Network Infrastructure2010Inngår i: Information systems management, ISSN 1058-0530, E-ISSN 1934-8703, Vol. 27, nr 3, 238-246 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Today's businesses are more and more dependent upon their information technology (IT) infrastructure. Therefore, the managers are aware of the huge costs associated with data loss (and recovery) and invest millions of dollars in special equipments in order to increase the reliability of their IT systems. Thus, the focus in this article is on the practical modalities of designing a reliable IT network infrastructure in an enterprise. In this direction an algorithm has been developed that is a hybrid between classic greedy and simulated annealing that search for the most reliable IT network infrastructure meeting the imposed budget cost constraints and the enterprise managers' decisions constraints. A key point of the proposed solution is the way in which the enterprise managers are involved in the estimation of the relative importance of their interconnections between their business's data centers. Furthermore, the algorithm presented in this article has been evaluated in the case of a retail enterprise for addressing the business's demands for a higher reliability of their IT network infrastructure.

IT Governance in the Healthcare Sector: A Case Study of a Public and Private Hospital in Tanzania2010Inngår i: International Journal of Information Systems and Change Management, ISSN 1479-313X, Vol. 4, nr 4, 314-337 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Today in many organisations in the healthcare sector the use of IT has become crucial in sustaining and extending the organisations' strategies and objectives. From this perspective the paper provides an analysis of the current state of IT governance practices in two hospitals, one public and one private, located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. During this research study we found that these hospitals manage their IT resources with a limited awareness of IT governance best practices. Moreover IT governance processes which now are in place are at an initial stage. As a result of this analysis we have found that the major problems facing these hospitals are regarding the lack of IT governance awareness among IT and business executives (that is one of the major reasons for having a lower governance of IT performance) together with the lack of or inadequate IT strategies that have negative consequences on strategic alignment.

Information Technology Governance in Public Organizations: Theory and Practice2017Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This book examines trends and challenges in research on IT governance in public organizations, reporting innovative research and new insights in the theories, models and practices within the area. As we noticed, IT governance plays an important role in generating value from organization’s IT investments. However there are different challenges for researchers in studying IT governance in public organizations due to the differences between political, administrative, and practices in these organizations.

The first section of the book looks at Management issues, including an introduction to IT governance in public organizations; a systematic review of IT alignment research in public organizations; the role of middle managers in aligning strategy and IT in public service organizations; and an analysis of alignment and governance with regard to IT-related policy decisions.

The second section examines Modelling, including a consideration of the challenges faced by public administration; a discussion of a framework for IT governance implementation suitable to improve alignment and communication between stakeholders of IT services; the design and implementation of IT architecture; and the adoption of enterprise architecture in public organizations.

Finally, section three presents Case Studies, including IT governance in the context of e-government strategy implementation in the Caribbean; the relationship of IT organizational structure and IT governance performance in the IT department of a public research and education organization in a developing country; the relationship between organizational ambidexterity and IT governance through a study of the Swedish Tax Authorities; and the role of institutional logics in IT project activities and interactions in a large Swedish hospital.

IT outsourcing relationships in Swedish public organizations2014Inngår i: Perspectives in Business Informatics Research: Proceedings, Springer, 2014, 15-29 s.Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Information technology (IT) is not only beneficial for the private sector but has a lot to offer for the public sector as well. However, most of the studies in IT outsourcing relationships consider only the private sector and do not pay attention to the public sector. In this context, the research has looked to determine the influential factors in IT outsourcing relationships in Swedish public organizations like are Swedish municipalities and classified them according to the importance. The research methodology used has included a survey among IT outsourcing decision makers from Swedish municipalities and a case study in a Swedish municipality. The survey has revealed that trust, cooperation, commitment, communication, and flexibility are the top five most important factors which are influencing the provider-recipient IT outsourcing relationship in Swedish municipalities. While the case study has revealed that all the factors that were identified during the literature review are influencing the provider-recipient IT outsourcing relationship in Swedish municipalities plus the identification of two new factors which are legislation and economy/money.
