    Abstract [fr]

Three Arabic Novels Starting with a Crime2012In: Edebiyât A journal of Middle Eastern literatures, ISSN 1475-262X, E-ISSN 1475-2638, Vol. 15, no 1, p. 1-19Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present study treats three Arabic novels which belong to different periods and use different narrative techniques. Yet they all start with the same theme: the discovery of a murder. Despite this apparent similarity in their beginnings, the murder plot develops in a different way in the three cases. Each beginning contains elements that announce the development of the story. The three beginnings serve the special purposes of their respective novels, in the way the murder is presented to the reader, in the elements each beginning tries to draw attention to, in the language used in this purpose, in the identity of the character who discovers the murder and even in the type of the murder itself. The three novels have, beside the murder plot, various thematic and ideological objectives which influence the way the novel starts and even overshadow, in some cases, the murder plot.

Skrivundervisning i grundskolans tidigare år F–3: En systematisk litteraturstudie2021Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Transmedial Migration: Properties of Fictional Characters Adapted into Actual Behavior2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Research in the field of fictional and possible worlds examines the real and its hypothetical counterparts. The interaction between the actual and the fictional is a cause of debate within this field, and includes questions concerning the ontological status of fictional characters and their relation to reality. The following discussion will engage current positions in this debate. These include questions of reference regarding the correlation between fictional characters and actual personalities. Studying the transmedial migration of character properties from fictional worlds into the actual world engages with the possible as dependent on the actual, as well as the influence fiction can have on reality, by demonstrating how individual characters are perceived as packages of properties, some of which we identify and recognize as adaptable to our own behavior. Transmedial migration requires compatibility between different media. Accordingly, it is explained through the direct correspondence of fictional properties to actual properties, and the indirect correspondence of fictional characters to actual people. I am claiming that an interaction can be observed between different media, such as fictional worlds and the actual world, with particular emphasis on the example of fictional characters and their properties. In order to comprehend this we need a robust framework and the model that I am proposing here comprises the essential elements for such a framework. The transmedial migration of character properties from a textual medium, such as a Sherlock Holmes story, into the physical, social medium of the actual world is the action of adapting a fictional character’s package of properties into an actual person’s behavior. The agency of actual people in adapting fictional character properties to their corporal, social actions is what constitutes transmedial migration. This is a specific example of behavioral learning that recognizes certain behavior by the means of a label or trademark that is acquired from a fictional character. It is conceivable that any number of behavioral attributes, such as attitudes or habits, could be scientifically proven to have transmedially migrated by means of experimentation. Nevertheless, culturally and socially, it is only the definite identification of such character properties that substantiates my argument of transmedial migration through adaptation.

"En fullkomlig man": Kropp och samhällsutveckling hos Viktor Rydberg2021In: Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap, ISSN 1104-0556, E-ISSN 2001-094X, no 1-2, p. 120-128Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article treats the place of the body in thecultural criticism of Viktor Rydberg, not only as a central theme but also as an image with the potential to figuratively describe societal and even cosmic relationships. Rydberg’s idealof the symmetrical and athletic body is seen inthe perspective of his dependence on German neo-humanism and the gymnastic movement. The ideal of bodily symmetry figures as an image of universal man who defies the division of labor, while the deformed body inversely figures as an image of the lack of wholeness in a stratified bourgeois society. This is further elucidated by an analysis of Rydberg’s view of Darwinism and his fear of degeneration .In the final section, special attention is given to Rydberg’s broodings on the “Future of theWhite Race”. In this text, the body is a figure of the collectivity (the body politic) and its diseases signify political and moral crisis, while the remedy for this state of affairs lies in recognizing the unity of the living, the deadand the unborn in the body of Christ.

The Impact of Preconceived Notions: A Literary Study of Moral Complexity in the Harry Potter Series2020Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the use of the character Harry Potter as focalizer in the Harry Potter series. The objective is to see how Harry’s preconceived notions are caused by his inability to grasp moral complexity. The study is conducted by a close reading of the novels with the focus on the relationship between Harry and the character Severus Snape. The study is based on the theoretical foundation of narratology by Gérard Genette, as well as Wolfgang Iser’s explanation of the implied reader. Many instances of interaction between Harry and Snape in the book series are dependent on Harry’s viewpoint and his preconceived notions. Harry as the focalizer of the text affects the implied reader’s given view of Snape, while the real reader sees other parts of his personality due to the independence from the focalizer’s point-of-view. Snape’s moral complexity shows by the choices he makes is the cause of the misconceptions held by Harry and the implied reader.

    Abstract [en]

This article studies the translation flows of picture book series between Scandinavia (Sweden and Norway) and France between 2011 and 2021. According to studies on literary flows, countries having so-called « dominated » and « peripheral » or « semi-peripheral » languages, for example Norway and Sweden, should import more literature from the core (France) than the other way around. However, the present study shows that this theory does not hold water regarding picture books for children aged 3-6 years, where the literary flows from the core to the (semi-)periphery are uneven, or even non-existing. We are able to ascertain that the status of the picture book series is maintained as they cross the borders between France and Scandinavia. Moreover, the series translated to French are almost always characterized by a high literary legitimacy (symbolic recognition of authors and works, limited number of titles per series, affirmation of graphic and authorial creativity), with often a representation of a Scandinavian perspective. The fact that the books originally are part of a series is rarely foregrounded as a marketing device in Scandinavia, but on the contrary, this could be the case in France. The translation flows concerning picture book series show that seriality, sales figures and literary legitimacy are compatible.

Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Därefter börjarutvecklingen ske i skolan under olika tillfällen.

    Abstract [sv]

The effectiveness of reading aloud on vocabulary acquisition for young learners2021Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This research study explores to what extent reading aloud is beneficial for vocabulary acquisition. Based on research statistics provided by Eurostat (2020) the majority of students in Sweden learn English as a foreign language. Therefore, the focus of the study is based on investigating the EFL classroom in Sweden. The research question this study is based on is to what extent reading aloud is beneficial for teaching English as a foreign language in the Swedish school from grade one to three in terms of children's ability to learn vocabulary. The method used for this research to collect scientific journals, dissertations and related research that can contribute to this discussion and result of this study is collected through different electronic databases. The access to studies conducted in an EFL classroom was rather restrictive and therefore the majority of the studies used were conducted on children who studied English as a first language in preschool and grade one to three in primary school. Whilst the selected studies target groups differed in age, findings indicate that the benefits of only reading aloud have little influence on children’s vocabulary acquisition. However, findings also presented that using word explanation and repetition during read aloud is shown to be more beneficial for vocabulary acquisition.

    Abstract [en]

In YA dystopias, adolescent girls are repeatedly used as breeders of the new generation and must go to the extremes to protect their offspring from an oppressive society. The motif of the adolescent mother is used both to highlight the vulnerability of the young mothers and the challenges that they face when they bring a vulnerable child into their dystopian worlds. It illustrates inequalities in the distribution of power between the adult generation and adolescents. It is one of several tools that authors of YA dystopias use to problematise adults’ oppression of adolescents in real-life societies through the lens of extreme power abuse in dystopian, future worlds. Through an analysis of Amy Ewing's The Lone City trilogy (2014–2016) and Jennie Melamed's Gather the Daughters (2017), the chapter illustrates in what ways the young mothers are oppressed, how they respond to this oppression, and how they rebel against it. An intersectional approach is applied, which clarifies that intersections between for example youth, motherhood, and gender affect both how the adolescent mothers are positioned in their dystopian society's matrix of domination and what possibilities they have to challenge their oppression for the sake of themselves and/or their child.

Galna män av kvinnliga genier: –En studie av gotiska genrekonventioner i Aurora Ljungstedts Hin Ondes Hus och Lucie Lagerbielkes En Sällsam Upplefvelse2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study looks at how “risky play” and children’s independence is portrayed in picture books aimed at children ages 3-6. The picture books are analyzed using narratological concepts, focusing on how power relations are portraited. Some of the key concepts dealt with in the analysis, in addition to risky play, are power, resistance and negotiation. Research shows that risky play in ECEC is important for children to develop not only physically, but also their cognitive development and ability to assess risks. Although it was concluded that risky play is portraited in different ways in the books analyzed, an overarching theme of the play portraited as joyful was identified. In some of the picture books analyzed, adults were absent throughout. When the adults were included in the stories, they generally had a negative view on the potential risk children face in risky play. By working pedagogically in ECEC with conversations and activities around literature that portrays risky play, representations could shift to better align with educational theory and children’s own experience. The conversations, with a focus on topics such as risky play, power and participation connected to the ECEC context, can enable adults and children to, through conversations, give the children the opportunity to influence their own situation in the ECEC settings.

    Abstract [sv]

”I Want to Make Them Think”: An Analysis of Teachers’ Use of Dystopian Literature in the Swedish EFL Classroom2020Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate the role of dystopian literature in the Swedish EFL classroom. In particular, it intends to investigate and analyze the method that Swedish EFL teachers use to employ this genre into the classroom, as well as the aim for the usage. The study is qualitative and has been carried out through the conducting of semi-structured interviews consisting of open-ended questions. The findings of the study show that there are a number of common aims and methods among the respondents.  The aim for the using of this particular genre was commonly to increase the students’ willingness to read by working with literature that would hopefully be appealing to them. Common methods for  using this genre of literature include discussions in different group-constellations, as well as employing films and shorter video clips as a complement to the standard literature used during lectures. Further findings show that teachers are inclined to adapt their teaching depending on the individual student groups. In other words, there is a tendency among the respondents to be flexible in their teaching, in order to favor students’ development in the English language.

    Abstract [en]

This essay analyzes the character of Beverly Marsh in Andrés Muschietti’s It and It Chapter 2. By using previous research on women in horror, Beverly’s character is dissected with regards to sexualization and agency. Both the films contrast the common trope of the weak sexualized woman in horror movies by staying away from over-sexualization and making Beverly an equal to her male counterparts.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims at (reading and) analysing a selection of children's picture books stories within the critical framework of ecocriticism. The book series is entitled Environmental Preservation Series, Endangered Animals and comprises ten stories written by Ghassan Shibārū.The research relies on the theoretical foundations outlined by Lawrence Buell in his The Environmental Imagination. The study highlighted how this series of stories focus on scientific topics related to the environmental risks the planet is exposed to now, such as global warming, indiscriminate hunting and poaching, urban expansion, the use of chemical pesticides, and air, water and environmental pollution caused by the release of waste, gases, and oil. The stories present such environmental issues in a simple narrative form within the structure of the selected picture books. The research concluded that the theoretical framework of ecocriticism principles is suitable for these texts and that children's literature can contribute greatly to the building of the child's cultural literacy in relation to the environment and its possible dangers.

    Abstract [en]

This research deals with Anorexia nervosa disorder in the novel ʾIjāṣat Mīlā, which portrays the impact of modern-day materialism and its effect on the emerging and spreading of some disorders to such an extent that it has become a phenomenon needing investigation. Because of a number of social and materialistic factors, this disorder deeply affects young people, who easily fall under the influence of social media. This research examines both the background of the disorder and the suffering that the main character of the novel goes through. It further investigates the effects of social media platforms and fora on young people, together with the role of literature in portraying the damages caused by their usage. The novel is examined through critical cultural theory, which searches for the hidden cultural significance of the phenomenon. The result of the study shows that ʾIjāṣat Mīlā can be seen as a sphere, comprising all the social changes that communication technology causes in the new generations.

“I should think what politics he has are just a little bit left of center”:An analysis of James Bond’s personal ideology2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Ian Fleming’s debut novel Casino Royale (2015) introduces the iconic character James Bond. The savvy British spy who must save the world from Soviet villain is a cultural icon the world over. Yet not much is known of his personal political leanings. Fleming once claimed that James Bond’s politics lies just left of center. In this essay I analyze where James Bond lies on the left-right political scale by using Cichoka & Dhont’s (2018) “Big-five personality model”.Research has been made about the contextual, historical and political settings of the Bond novels such as Jeremy Black’s (2001) “The politics of James Bond: from Fleming's novels to the big screen” which serves as a complement to this research. Black’s (2001)claims suggest that Britain struggled for dominance after The Second World War as they were financially in ruin and although Britain lost some of its colonies, they still had many territories under their control. However, with the rising power of the Soviet Union, the nationalistic feeling in Britain grew as their reputation as a powerful empire needed to be upheld. Therefore, a need for a strong British symbol grew, which also acted as a reason for why Fleming created James Bond. The essay concludes that James Bond represents a specific part of Great Britain. The analysis has shown James Bond is a product of his time by symbolizing the longing for the return of the great British empire. This is supported by the fact of him scoring low on categories such as Agreeableness and Openness combined with the fact that he harbors anti-Communist beliefs. The analysis show that he acts in a manner that would highlight the colonial days of Britain where their strength had not yet diminished as opposed to the times after the Second World War. As such, the actions of James Bond, together with his explicit views suggest that he lies slightly more towards the right on the political scale and thus, disputesthe claim of Ian Fleming.

Att främja nyanländas språkutveckling: En litteraturstudie om lärarens betydelse ochframgångsfaktorer som påverkar nyanländas språkutveckling i svenskundervisning i årskurs F -3.2022Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
