    Abstract [en]

    We study solvability of convolution equations for functions with discrete support in Rn, a special case being functions with support in the integer points. The more general case is of interest for several grids in Euclidean space, like the body-centred and face-centred tesselations of 3-space, as well as for the non-periodic grids that appear in the study of quasicrystals. The theorem of existence of fundamental solutions by de Boor et al. is generalized to general discrete supports, using only elementary methods. We also study the asymptotic growth of sequences and arrays using the Fenchel transformation.

    Abstract [en]

    We raise two questions on Euclid's Elements: How to explain that Propositions 16 and 27 in his first book do not follow, strictly speaking, from his postulates (or are perhaps meaningless)? and: What are the mathematical consequences of the meanings of the term eutheia, which we today often prefer to consider as different?

    The answer to the first question is that orientability is a tacit assumption. The answer to the second is rather a discussion on efforts to avoid actual infinity, and having to (in some sense or another) construct equivalence classes of segments to achieve uniqueness.

Den nämner så de framgångsrika matematiska modeller som bygger på de reella talen och tar därefter upp diskreta modeller, som har helt  andra egenskaper. Knutna mattor och mosaiker är diskreta och kan ses som föregångare till den digitala geometrin. Genom datorernas utveckling har diskreta modeller blivit allt mer betydelsefulla. Avslutningsvis framförs vissa mer personliga varningar.

    Abstract [en]

    Mikael Passare (1959–2011) was a brilliant mathematician. His PhD thesis from 1984 was a breakthrough in the theory of residues in several complex variables. Later he switched to the theory of amoebas and coamoebas. In discussions with him during the last thirty years many questions have emerged—not all of them were resolved at the time of his premature death.  The purpose of the paper is to save from oblivion some of the mathematical ideas of Mikael Passare. In the article some of these unanswered questions are presented, always preceded by a discussion leading up to the question. Some of the questions might present challenges to his nine former PhD students, to his many collaborators around the globe—and to anybody interested. Is there an associative algebra of residue currents and principal-value distributions? Is there an interesting non-associative algebra of such currents? Meromorphic extension using two parameters often leads to points of indeterminacy—what is the natural choice at such points? Several questions have bearing on tropical mathematics. Is it possible to build an axiomatic theory for tropical geometry? There are also questions on tropical polynomials as limits of classical polynomials. Can the absolute values of the coefficients of a polynomial be retrieved from its growth function? Some questions are concerned with digital convexity. Finally, there is a question on the constant term in powers of a Laurent polynomial.

    For several centuries following its founding in 1477, all lectures and dissertations at Uppsala University were in Latin. Then, during one century, from 1852 to 1953, several languages came into use: there was a transition from Latin to Swedish, and then to French, German, and English. In the paper this transition is illustrated by language choice in doctoral theses in mathematics and in a Nordic journal.

    Werner Fenchel was a pioneer in introducing duality in convexity theory. He got his PhD in Berlin, was forced to leave Germany, moved to Denmark, and lived during almost two years in Sweden. In a private letter he explained his views on the development of duality in convexity theory and the many terms that have been used to describe it. The background for his move from Germany is sketched.
