    Abstract [en]

This chapter is intended to offer assistance for the linguistic description of writing systems throughout the history of one or, especially, several languages and provide a comparative description of the different units of writing systems. The first section establishes the definitions of the concepts of grapheme, graph, allograph and suprasegmental grapheme. The application of these concepts to English and Romance languages is exemplified by three models and methods of diachronic and comparative description of writing systems: Romance scriptology, cultural history of European orthographies, and comparative graphematics of punctuation. The second section discusses biscriptality, the phenomenon of employing two or more writing systems for the same language, not rare in the history of languages from different families, and related to different aspects of society and language users. With examples mainly from Russian and other Slavic languages, biscriptality is shown to be present on several levels of written language, and various applications of biscriptality are characterized with the help of dichotomies such as synchronic vs. diachronic biscriptality, monocentric vs. pluricentric biscriptality, and societal vs. individual biscriptality.

    Abstract [en]

This study investigates whether two Swedish digital educational materials for the subject Swedish in secondary school can be associated with any form of discrimination or not. The study has examined the parts of the educational material that contains fiction. To achieve this goal the study has followed three research questions. The first question investigates how the educational material represents the intersectional terms gender, ethnicity, sexuality and social class. The second question investigates whether any discrimination related to the terms can be found or not. The third question investigates if and how a connection to the Swedish curriculum and its value-system can be perceived in the educational material. The results show that different forms of discrimination can be found in the analysed material. The presence of discrimination in the educational material weakens the connection to the Swedish curriculum’s value system. The study’s conclusion is that there should be a sterner outlook upon the educational material teachers use in the classroom to avoid the possibility of teaching with discriminatory material.

Colonial and indigenous movements toward and through the landscapes of Swedish Lapland in the journals of Petrus Læstadius2019In: Narratives of place in literature and film / [ed] Steven Allen and Kirsten Møllegaard, New York: Routledge, 2019, p. 21-35Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter argues that movement – the way individuals and groups are imagined to move toward and through the landscape – can be used to understand and problematize the colonization of Lapland in the 1700s and 1800s. It explores how different movements in the texts create a paradoxical place of desolate, wild, and dangerous nature that at the same time is inhabited by the indigenous Sami. The chapter explains the way different groups are described as moving toward and through the landscape in colonial texts is a fruitful way of examining the ideology and mechanics of colonialism. Petrus Laestadius was ordained in 1825 and two year later he entered the service as a missionary in Swedish Lapland. Laestadius took up subscriptions for an upcoming travel narrative based on his work in Lapland in 1828 and the first book was published in 1831 under the title Journal af Petrus Laestadius for forsta aret af hans tjenstgoring sasom missionaire i Lappmarken.

    Abstract [en]

Proverbs offer insights into normative symbolic systems of mean- ing. In this article, proverbs collected in Northern Sweden that mirrors an older agrarian environment are studied with a specific subset of such a normative meaning system in focus: masculinity and femininity. The analysis is centered on three important domains of human experience: The Marriage Market, The Household and The Sexuality. It is argued that the gender conceptions found in the proverbs form a system of gender hegemony, with hierarchically superior masculinity and hierarchically subordinate femininity. Furthermore, a possible cultural model found in the proverbs, that of The Successful Household, is out- lined and discussed.

Fega pojkar pussar aldrig vackra flickor: Könsrelaterade ordspråk i nordnorrländsk agrarmiljö belysta ur språkligt och kulturellt perspektiv.2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation deals with 199 gender related proverbs that were collected in northern Sweden and were used in an agrarian environment, approximately between the beginning of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. The conceptions of gender which these proverbs convey also belong to the same time range and place.

The aim of this dissertation is to find out which conceptions of gender that is conveyed by proverbs in an older agrarian environment in northern Sweden. In order to achieve this aim the following question is examined: What conceptions are found in the proverb material of the cultural category woman, the cultural category man and of the relationship between these categories?

As a base for an interpretation of the proverbs, which are written in various Swedish dialects, a linguistic analysis is carried out. The interpretation is then formed through a concept that was developed by Kirshenblatt-Gimblett (1982); namely, base meaning. This concept relates to the shared meaning of a proverb by a group of people. The proverbs that include metaphors and similes are analyzed with a method that is developed from the cognitive linguistic theory of blending (Fauconnier & Turner 1996, 1998).

The proverb material is sorted in three analytical categories, and presented in separate chapters: Chapter four, The Marriage Market (Äktenskapsmarknaden), chapter five: The Household (Hushållet) and chapter six, Sexuality (Sexualiteten). These categories are in turn divided into sub categories.

One example of a salient conceptions of gender that is found in the category The Marriage Market is that the man chooses a woman, not the other way around. One example of a central conception in the category The Household is that the man earns money and supply other resources and the woman takes care of these resources. The significance of the conceptions of male and female sexuality is that they convey the difficulty in controlling a virulent male sexuality.

The gender conceptions are analysed as part of a system of gender hegemony and a cultural model of the successful household is suggested based on the proverb material.

Indigenous Place-Names in (Post)colonial Contexts: The Case of Ubmeje in Northern Sweden2020In: Scandinavian Studies, ISSN 0036-5637, E-ISSN 2163-8195, Vol. 92, no 1, p. 104-126Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Postcolonial societies around the world still struggle with lingering colonial structures, among them the many official place-names on maps, signs, and in various registers and databases that have largely replaced Indigenous names. In the wake of strengthened minority policy globally, many Western countries today are striving to mend some of the damage that colonial place-naming practices have done, by acknowledging precolonial names and helping to revitalize their usage. However, as place-names are connected to issues of identity and power, especially in plurilingual and multicultural areas, such processes often become complicated.

The purpose of this study, then, is to illuminate the meanings and functions of Indigenous place-names in postcolonial settings. It does so through a case study of the proposed implementation of the Ume Sámi name Ubmeje as an additional official name for the city of Umeå in northern Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

Narratives about northern Sweden are often narratives about nature. This has been true throughout history and is still true today. Different ways of understanding nature have become intertwined with the place and the people who live there. The nature in northern Sweden can be magnificent and impressive, but it can also be desolate, threatening and dangerous. A dominant image of nature in northern Sweden - then as now - is the image of resources, assets.

The overall aim of the study is to shed light on the role of nature in linguistic place-making in northern Sweden with a particular focus on the settler colonization during the 18th and 19th centuries. Through a selection of text sources, nature’s central place in the story of the colonization, of the place, its history, change and future is highlighted.

The texts that are analyzed are the two journals in which Petrus Læstadius described his work as a missionary in Lapland, as well as Olov Petter Pettersson's detailed description of the settler colonization in the work Gamla byar i Vilhelmina.

The settler colonization took place in areas with Sami presence and history and this study connects to the research field of Settler Colonial Studies in a critical discussion of the linguistic place-making in the texts.

One of the aims of the study is to also shed light on the connections that exist between the settler colonization depicted in the texts, and the linguistic place-making with nature at the center that is ongoing in northern Sweden today.

    Abstract [en]

This article analyses the intertextuality of a chapter of the book Gamla byar i Vilhelmnina (Old Villages in Vilhelmina), by folklore scholar Olof Petter Pettersson. It illustrates how the work is a many-voiced and hence sometimes complex text, with much to tell us about the colonisation of Swedish Lapland.

Alongside a neutral narrative voice, it is possible to make out intertextual references by Pettersson to traditional knowledge of various kinds. There are references, for example, to names in use at the time the author was writing, sometimes linked to a specific geographical area or thnic group. Other instances that are discussed include the written texts cited by Pettersson, which reflect the strict legal and economic perspective of the state, and references to early legends and names used in the past, which the author often traces to old Sami oral traditions.

It also emerges that Pettersson alternates between conveying folk traditions and knowledge, on the one hand, and a more analytical mode of writing, on the other.

Understanding figurative proverbs: a model based on conceptual blending2013In: Folklore: the journal of the Folklore Society, ISSN 0015-587X, E-ISSN 1469-8315, Vol. 124, no 1, p. 28-44Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Proverb meaning has been an issue in paremiological research for a long time. In this paper the cognitive linguistic theory of conceptual blending, or blending theory, is explored as a starting point in the discussion of figurative proverbs. This theory is combined here with the notion of ‘base meaning’. Furthermore, the concept of ‘extended base meaning’ is introduced as a ‘thick’ meaning description, especially useful when proverbs are discussed in relation to collective knowledge structures.

Narrating climate change: conventionalized narratives in concordance and conflict2016In: Narrative works, ISSN 1925-0622, Vol. 6, no 2, p. 1-27Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, we take a narrative approach to Swedish media texts regarding farming, forestry, and Sami livelihoods. The main purpose is to illuminate how a master narrative on climate change is shaped, activated, and put into practice in different ways in different settings and contexts. The study discusses the complex interplay between different levels of narratives and the narrative dynamics that influence and shape collective representations of climate change. We discern a narrative level that does not explicitly challenge the master narrative, but operationalizes it in close relation to cultural contexts and specific goals, resulting in what we call conventionalized narratives.

Making Sami place-names visible in Sweden: guidelines, practice and ways forward

In this article, the authors illuminate the process in Sweden when a Sami place-name is considered for inclusion in the official place-name database, which in turn is a prerequisite for the name being made visible in the linguistic landscape through its use on road signs. Based on some problematic aspects of the current process, the authors argue for a revised set of guidelines for working with Sami place-names in Sweden, taking into account the colonial history and ongoing revitalization efforts. Furthermore, it is proposed that increased local participation in place-name processes could be beneficial to the work of finding the right name form, and to gain support from the name users.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this quantitative study was to examine if there is a correlation between morphological knowledge and decoding and between morphological knowledge and word knowledge among high school students. In order to examine the correlation between these variables, we recruited participants from two high schools in two parts of Sweden. 38 students completed and did all nine tests (two decoding, one word knowledge and six morphological knowledge). The result of our study showed, for this group, that there is a correlation between morphological knowledge and decoding and between morphological knowledge and word knowledge. The strongest correlation showed to be between morphological knowledge and word knowledge.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

This work examines teachers’ experiences of teaching students with reading and writing difficulties / dyslexia in a regular class-room setting. The questions were: General experiences of the needs of additional adjustments in teaching. How additional adjustments strengthen classroom teaching. Experiences of the implementation of digital teaching tools in teaching and reflections regarding additional adjustments in relation to the control documents? A research design with semi-structured interviews with a phenomenological approach was chosen. Ten teachers from six different schools participated in the interviews. Some general patterns occurred in the interviews. The participating teachers generally identified students’ need of extra support by observing their degree of participation in different instructional activities in the classroom. The participating teachers found implementation of digital tools difficult because of their own lack of knowledge as well as technical issues regarding the capacity of the network at the school and computer problems. The teachers were well aware of the overall goal in the curriculum about giving all students equal opportunities to reach the goals in the curriculum. However, the teachers’ knowledge about policies and guidelines in relation to how to implement and evaluate instructional adjustments were scarce.

A thorn in the side and its equivalents in French and Swedish: One sense realized as three different idioms2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyse how three idioms, in English, French and Swedish, despite different lexical compositions are capable of conveying the same meaning. The idioms in question are a thorn in the side, une épine au pied/dans le pied and en nagel i ögat. This study is concerned with how different metaphorical images are used to express the same meaning. Furthermore, it examines what it is in the semantics of the lexical items that enables these idioms to express the same idiomatic meaning. Using a cognitive linguistic approach the analysis is conducted at a linguistic and a conceptual level. The analysis shows that these three different idioms are capable of conveying the same idiomatic meaning because they are motivated by the same conceptual metaphor.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to explore preschool- and primary school teachers’ perceptions of fairytales, why they use fairytales and what thoughts they have about the impact of fairytales on children’s reading and writing development. We interviewed seven teachers and three preschool teachers in northern Sweden to find out how work with fairytales is carried out in preschool and primary school. We also interviewed twelve pupils who were seven and eight years old to find out what they thought of fairytales in primary school. The result showed that preschool- and primary school teachers had a positive attitude towards fairytales and the opportunities provided by fairytales. The preschool- and primary school teachers in this study used fairytales to stimulate the imagination and the language development of the children. Fairytales were believed to create engagement and emotions within the children. To stimulate reading and writing among the children many teachers let the children write their own fairytales, pointing out the structure of a typical fairytale before the students start writing. Preschool teachers used fairytales to introduce the children to written language, since not all children were familiar with written language. This study shows that fairytales were used in different ways among the teachers and the preschool teachers and that the pupils enjoyed working with fairytales

Intensivundervisning i läsförståelsestrategier för elever i åk 7: En interventionsstudie2016Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of an intervention of reciprocal teaching (RT) strategies in students’ reading comprehension. A quantitative method using a quasi-experimental design is used in the intervention with three students in seventh grade with reading comprehension difficulties. The intervention of twelve lessons took place during a period of five weeks. A reading comprehension test was made before and after the intervention. The results from the experiment group are compared with the results from the reference group, and three intervention lessons were filmed. The findings from the film documentation revealed a progress in using different strategies to overcome obstacles to achieve reading comprehension. The students develop the ability to ask spontaneous questions and make critical reflections when reading. The test results also show a positive trend in the development of reading comprehension. This study thus confirms previous studies showing that students with reading difficulties benefit from being taught in how to use reading comprehension strategies, where RT is an available model.
