Identifying irreducible loops in the Instrumentation Point Graph2011In: Journal of systems architecture, ISSN 1383-7621, E-ISSN 1873-6165, Vol. 57, no 7, p. 720-733Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Instrumentation Point Graph (IPG) is a program model whose primary usage is within hybrid measurement-based frameworks that compute Worst-Case Execution Time (WCET) estimates. The IPG represents the transitions between instrumentation points (Ipoints) that are inserted into the program to collect measurements at run time. However, uncontrolled Ipoint placement often causes the resultant IPG to contain unstructured (i.e. irreducible) loops, potentially compromising the safety of WCET estimates unless the hierarchical containment among IPG loops can be correctly identified. The contributions of this paper are fourfold: (1) we show that the IPG is more susceptible to irreducibility even when the program itself is well structured; (2) we demonstrate that state-of-the-art loop detection algorithms, designed specifically to handle irreducible loops, generally fail to construct the correct hierarchical relationship between IPG loops; (3) we present an algorithm that identifies arbitrary irreducible loops in the IPG during its construction from another graph-based model, an extended type of Control Flow Graph (CFG) called the CFG(+); (4) we show how the structural relation between the IPG and the CFG(+) allows loop bounds obtained through static analysis to be transferred onto the IPG. Pre-hospital trauma care resources for road traffic injuries in a middle-income country-A province based study on need and access in Iran.2011In: Injury, ISSN 0020-1383, E-ISSN 1879-0267, Vol. 42, no 9, p. 879-884Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Access to pre-hospital trauma care can help minimize many of traffic related mortality and morbidity in low- and middle-income countries with high rate of traffic deaths such as Iran. The aim of this study was to assess if the distribution of pre-hospital trauma care facilities reflect the burden of road traffic injury and mortality in different provinces in Iran. METHODS: This national cross-sectional study is based on ecological data on road traffic mortality (RTM), road traffic injuries (RTIs) and pre-hospital trauma facilities for all 30 provinces in Iran in 2006. Lorenz curves and Gini coefficients were used to describe the distributions of RTM/RTIs and pre-hospital trauma care facilities across provinces. Spearman rank-order correlation was performed to assess the relationship between RTM/RTI and pre-hospital trauma care facilities. RESULTS: RTM and RTIs as well as pre-hospital trauma care facilities were distributed unequally between different provinces. There was no significant association between the rate of RTM and RTIs and the number of pre-hospital trauma care facilities across the country. CONCLUSIONS: The distribution of pre-hospital trauma care facilities does not reflect the needs in terms of RTM and RTIs for different provinces. These results suggest that traffic related mortality and morbidity could be reduced if the needs in terms of RTM and RTIs were taken into consideration when distributing pre-hospital trauma care facilities between the provinces.

Att leva som Robin Hood?: En hermeneutisk studie om vad det innebär att vara sopdykare i ett postmodernt konsumtionssamhälle2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to describe and bring deeper understanding as to what dumpster diving means in a postmodern consumer society. Also, the theoretical framework of this study will be derived from the works of sociologist Zygmunt Bauman in which he discusses consumption lifestyles, globalization and postmodern ethics. The data consist of interviews with three men and two women who have been dumpster diving continuously for extensive amounts of time. The methodological point of departure is a hermeneutic approach and the material is interpreted on three levels. Moreover, the results of the study will be divided into themes. An ambivalent consumption, rush seekers, think globally – act locally, the righteous brigand and old-fashioned morals are those terms that aligned comprise the principal interpretation of what it means to be a dumpster-diver in the postmodern world. The results it shows that dumpster divers live in a Robin Hood culture as righteous brigands where it is considered justified to take from the rich and give to the poor people. Dumpster divers are significantly ambiguous in their actions due to the fact that they have an idea that they are not contributing to consumption society, but in reality they do indeed. In fact, this study shows that dumpster divers would not exist if they were not fed by consumption.

Ledarskap på distans: Förutsättningar, utmaningar och möjligheter2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study based on ethnographic methodology aims to describe and understand the meaning of the animal-assisted therapy for older persons´well-being from an interactionist perspective and what other effects this can contribute to. The result of the study is based on four observations that were conducted at a care home in a medium-sized municipality in Sweden, as well as five complementary interviews with some of the professional staff. The result shows that therapy dogs contribute to the well-being of the older adults by creating a meaningfulness in their everyday life. To make it possible for older persons to let go of their concerns if only for a little while as well as to give health-promoting effects in the form of, among other things, increased physical activity. Assuming that the older person do not have a fear or allergy associated with dogs. From the result, the conclusion is that the mental health of older persons needs to be treated as well as their physical health, by implementing therapy dogs to a greater extent within eldercare

Intensive care nurses' conceptions of a critical pathway in caring for aortic-surgery patients: A phenomenographic study2013In: Intensive & Critical Care Nursing, ISSN 0964-3397, E-ISSN 1532-4036, Vol. 29, no 3, p. 166-173Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the present study was to identify and describe intensive care nurses' different conceptions of a critical pathway in caring for patients that have undergone aortic-surgery. Individual semi-structured interviews with eight specialist registered nurses at a Swedish intensive care unit were conducted and phenomenographically analysed. Three descriptive categories, with a total of five sub-categories, constituted the outcome-space of how the pathway was conceived of in caring: as a guide open to individual patients needs (clinical judgement governs caring and patient autonomy governs caring), as an instrument to promote patient safety (a source of knowledge, a planning tool and a reference standard) and as a source of support for professional confidence. In accordance with current literature, the nurses in the present study identified a number of advantages in applying the pathway in caring even if they were also conscious that the use of a pathway can give rise to unreflective standardisation. The nurses' conceptions indicate that the pathway prescribed for managing patients who have undergone aortic surgery is supportive and facilitates patient safety without jeopardising respect for the patient's individual care needs. This insight may be used to influence a thoughtful dialogue about the practice of pathways in intensive care.

Factors affecting the implementation process of clinical pathways: A mixed method study within the context of Swedish intensive care2015In: Journal of Evaluation In Clinical Practice, ISSN 1356-1294, E-ISSN 1365-2753, Vol. 21, no 2, p. 255-261Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Rationale, aims and objectives Clinical pathways (CPs) can improve quality of care on intensive care units (ICUs), but are infrequently utilized and of varying quality. Knowledge regarding factors that facilitate versus hinder successful implementation of CPs is insufficient and a better understanding of the activities and individuals involved is needed. The aim of this study was to explore the implementation process of CPs within the context of ICUs. Methods An exploratory design with a sequential mixed method was used. A CP survey, including all Swedish ICUs, was used to collect quantitative data from ICUs using CPs (n = 15) and interviews with key informants (n = 10) were used to collect qualitative data from the same ICUs. Descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis were used, and the quantitative and qualitative findings were integrated. Results The CP implementation was conceptualized according to two interplaying themes: a process to realize the usefulness of CPs and create new habits; and a necessity of enthusiasm, support and time. Multiple factors affected the process and those factors were organized in six main categories and 14 subcategories. Conclusions Bottom-up initiatives, interprofessional project groups and small ICUs seem to enhance successful implementation of CPs while inadequate electronic health record systems, insufficient support and time constrains can be barriers. Support regarding the whole implementation process from centralized units at the local hospitals, as well as cooperation between ICUs and national guidance, has the potential to raise the quality of CPs and benefit the progress of CP implementation.

Att trivas på arbetet: Psykosocial arbetsmiljö och arbetstrivsel inom en statlig myndighet2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background:Person-centered care is a relatively new concept and is one of the core competencies for nurses. Person-centered caring means having a holistic perspective and see the person behind the patient which can generate the patients' unique history. The patients often find that the nurses do not have the time to listen and talk, which is essential to be able to provide a person-centered care. Aim:To describe nurses' experiences of providing care according to person-centered approach. Method:A qualitative literature study with descriptive approach. Results:The result generated two themes and four sub-themes. The first theme: To strive for better attitudes in the meetingcontains two subthemes; Qualities that are of value to understand the patientand The importance of giving more time to the patient. The second theme:Having a mutual relationship with the patientcontains two sub-themes; Seeing the person behind the patientand Making the patient involvedConclusion:To be able to provide care according to person-centered approach and see the person behind the patient, the nurses considered that a certain amount of self-knowledge was required. Being able to give their time and be genuinely present and listen to each patient was important in order to increase the safety and participation of the patient.

The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health and the version for children and youth as a tool in child habilitation/early childhood intervention: Feasibility and usefulness as a common language and frame of reference for practice2010In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 32, no SUPPL. 1, p. 125-138Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Early childhood intervention and habilitation services for children with disabilities operate on an interdisciplinary basis. It requires a common language between professionals, and a shared framework for intervention goals and intervention implementation. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and the version for children and youth (ICF-CY) may serve as this common framework and language. This overview of studies implemented by our research group is based on three research questions: Do the ICF-CY conceptual model have a valid content and is it logically coherent when investigated empirically? Is the ICF-CY classification useful for documenting child characteristics in services? What difficulties and benefits are related to using ICF-CY model as a basis for intervention when it is implemented in services? A series of studies, undertaken by the CHILD researchers are analysed. The analysis is based on data sets from published studies or master theses. Results and conclusion show that the ICF-CY has a useful content and is logically coherent on model level. Professionals find it useful for documenting children's body functions and activities. Guidelines for separating activity and participation are needed. ICF-CY is a complex classification, implementing it in services is a long-term project

Arbetsförhållandens betydelse för hälsa: En kvantitativ studie ur ett salutogent perspektiv bland lagerarbetare.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sick leave due to mental ill-health, caused by poor working conditions in the social and organizational work environment is a growing problem in the society. There is a lack of research on working conditions’ impact on health from a salutogenic perspective. The purpose of this study is to investigate the extent to which perceived working conditions can be associated with self-rated health from a salutogenic perspective among warehouse workers at a workplace. The study is based on questionnaire data. Univariat- and multiple linear regressions were performed to investigate the relationship between working conditions and health. The result showed that there are significant associations between working conditions and self-rated health. The strongest associations were found with supportive working conditions, time experience, individual inner experinces, and health. This means that it is important to have a high social climate in the workplace with access to support from both colleagues and employer, that work is perceived as meaningful, to have opportunities for development, that personnel education matches the requirements for the job and that there is enough time to perform tasks without stress. Self-rated health increased with age but there were no significant differences by gender, employment status, education or ethnic background. The result has been discussed on the basis of sense of coherence (SOC) and the demand-control-support model as a theoretical perspective.

Foot Barriers in Patients With Early Rheumatoid Arthritis: An Interview Study Among Swedish Women and Men2018In: Arthritis care & research, ISSN 2151-464X, E-ISSN 2151-4658, Vol. 70, no 9, p. 1348-1354Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: Foot impairments are related to reduced mobility and participation restrictions in daily activities in patients with established rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The new biologic medications are effective and reduce disease activity, but not disability to the same extent. Foot impairments are assumed to be related to participation restrictions also in patients with early RA, diagnosed after the introduction of biologic medications. Knowledge of foot impairments needs to be explored further after the introduction of biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs). The aim of this study was to explore the patients’ perspective of foot impairments related to early RA. Methods: The sample included 59 patients (ages 20–63 years) who were interviewed about participation dilemmas in daily life using the critical incident technique. The interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. Data related to foot impairments were extracted and analyzed thematically. A research partner validated the analysis. Results: Patients with early RA described a variety of participation restrictions related to foot impairments: foot hindrances in domestic life, foot impairments influencing work, leisure activities restricted by one's feet, struggling to be mobile, and foot impairments as an early sign of rheumatic disease. Conclusion: There is a need to focus on foot impairments related to early RA, and for health care professionals to understand these signs. A suggestion for future research is to conduct a longitudinal followup of foot impairment related to medication, disease activity, and disability in patients diagnosed after the introduction of bDMARDs.

Att vårdas lättsederad i mekanisk ventilation2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Children's experience of going through an acute radiographic examination2012In: Radiography, ISSN 1078-8174, E-ISSN 1532-2831, Vol. 18, no 2, p. 84-89Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Children's experience of radiographic examinations remains largely unexplored, although most radiographers examine children on a daily basis. In order to provide the high quality care that meets the needs of patients it was considered important to undertake research focused upon the patients' experience of radiographic practice. The aim of the study was to investigate children's experiences undergoing a radiographic examination for a suspected fracture.Inclusion criteria were Swedish-speaking children between 3 and 15 years of age who were submitted for a radiographic examination with an acute condition of the upper or lower extremity. Patients were informed of the study and together with the escorting parent or relative asked for consent to participate.During the examination the child was videotaped and immediately after, the child was interviewed in a nearby facility. The interview contained open-ended questions and was conducted while watching the videotape together with the child and their parent or relative and the researcher.Qualitative content analysis was used in analyzing the collected data. The analysis resulted in two categories - " feeling uncomfortable" and " feeling confident" The subcategories contained in these categories were " pain in relation to injury and examination" , " the waiting time is strenuous" , " worries for the future and consequences of the injury" , " confidence in parental presence" , " confidence in radiographic staff and examination procedure" , and finally " recognition entails familiarity" .The results revealed that for the younger children, the experience of undergoing an acute radiographic examination was associated with pain and anxiety, but for the older children, the anxiety was more connected to whether the injury had caused a fracture and any anticipated future consequences or complications. © 2011 The College of Radiographers.

Att möta genus: En diskursanalys av hur genus framställs i det offentliga rummet2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Kontinuitetens betydelse för patienten: En litteraturstudie2018Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the work is to investigate whether investigations and assessments regarding children within the social services are affected by the parent's and/or social worker's gender affiliation. The work has been carried out quantitatively through web surveys which were answered on the basis of a case description. The respondents were child administrators from the social services in six Swedish municipalities. A total of 71 respondents answered the survey, 35 of the respondents answered the questionnaire based on a case description of a single mother with a child and the remaining 36 respondents took part of the same case description but with a single father instead. The empiricism has been analyzed in the analysis program IBS SPSS Statistics, version 24. A significant difference is shown in the result that the female social workers are more likely than male social workers to initiate an investigation. Furthermore, the social worker holds the parenting skills of the mother in low regard by comparison with the father's parenting skills. Thus, more social workers initiate investigations/inquiries related to the mother. The previous research also shows that both the client's and the social secretary's gender are influencing factors in social service assessments. This is in line with the results of this study. The fact that assessments are influenced by both the client's and the social secretary's gender affiliation indicates that there are more factors that influence the assessment than the child's best, which according to the portal section of the Social Services Act (2001: 453) should always be taken into consideration in assessments regarding children.

Hur sjuksköterskor kan finna kraft i vårdandet2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: Nurses experience compassion fatigue after showing compassion towards patients in combination with high work demands, lack of support and a certain personality. Compassion fatigue can lead to resignation for nurses. The well-being of nurses and compassion energy also creates good care towards patients. Problem: It takes compassion energy for nurses to show compassionate care and still maintain their well-being. Since care is affected by the well-being of nurses, it is of importance to highlight how nurses can find compassion energy. Aim: To make a review of how nurses are finding compassion energy in caring. Method: A general literature review was made. Data was collected through Cinahl Plus and PubMed where ten articles was found. Seven of the articles had a quantitative approach and three had a qualitative approach. Result: Results showed four themes which described how nurses could find compassion energy; knowledge, encountering between nurses and patients, support from the environment and recovery influenced compassion energy among nurses. Conclusion: This study shows that knowledge, encountering, support and recovery should be maintained for nurses to experience compassion energy. This way, they will find energy to give good care.

Sex, inte för alla?: Self-efficacy, pedagogisk kompetens och stödjande bemötande av sexualitet2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Vinjetten varierade i två olika betingelser.

    Abstract [sv]

Nurses' blogs as part of a political process - Professional identity as a rhetorical resource for negotiating responsibility and blame2016In: Discourse, Context & Media, ISSN 2211-6958, E-ISSN 2211-6966, Vol. 13, p. 82-88Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The working conditions of nurses in the Swedish healthcare system are often debated in the news media, where the various stakeholders' (nurses, union, politicians and healthcare managers) versions of events are laid out. By using social media, nurses can participate in the debate and in a political process by drawing on narrative elements as responses to politicians' and healthcare managers' neglect of the nurses' situations. This article reports on a study of 50 topic driven blogs written by nurses from 2013 to 2015 and published on the website of a union magazine for healthcare professionals. Departing from a discursive narrative approach, the aim of the study is to analyse how the nurses narrate their working conditions and what they convey. The study shows that the bloggers create a we-ness by constructing and displaying their professional identity, illustrating unfair working conditions, conveying criticism and negotiating responsibility and blame. Addressing other nurses, the bloggers presume that others in the profession experience similar things in their workplaces and thereby encourage them to take action and make the injustices known. In order to gain credibility for the reported events and the relations, rhetorical resources such as factual accounts, categories, pronouns and a media discourse are used. The media discourse that is (re)produced in the blogs and elsewhere may result in nurses being trapped in their way of talking about their working situation, normalising it and having difficulty finding solutions.

“We’re not magicians!” On the use of rhetorical resources in Swedish news media narratives portraying the social services and social workers2019In: Qualitative Social Work, ISSN 1473-3250, E-ISSN 1741-3117, Vol. 18, no 2, p. 229-246Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article focuses on how the Swedish news media depicts the functioning of the social services and the situation of social workers. The empirical material consists of 586 articles published online during the years 2010–2015. A discursive approach makes up the theoretical and methodological framework. The aims of the article are to identify and categorise media narratives about social services and social workers, how they are portrayed, what is conveyed and how the stakeholders’ (politicians, managers and social workers) negotiate the question of responsibility for the situation in the social services. The study identifies and categorises seven different types of media narrative. In these narratives, social workers are portrayed in various ways, such as unwilling to stay in the profession, concerned, hardworking, etc. Reports on the crisis in the social services tend to dominate, e.g. how the social services fail to follow-up cases of child abuse, social workers’ heavy workload and that legal security cannot be guaranteed. Stakeholders, faced with reported criticism, maintain credibility by taking some responsibility and/or displacing liability by using various rhetorical resources. The media produces a public image of the lack of responsibility for solving the problematic situation. In this respect, the take-action-narratives are central to the debate, which argues for joint action to be taken to find solutions. Although the media is a powerful and scrutinising tool, it also needs to report on the improvements that have been made in order to give a more balanced picture of the social services.

The chronological I: The use of time as a rhetorical resource when doing identity in bullying narratives2013In: Narrative Inquiry, ISSN 1387-6740, E-ISSN 1569-9935, Vol. 23, no 2, p. 245-261Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the article is to problematise and discuss the usefulness of the chronological I as a new analytical approach for studying the doing of identity in storytelling. The chronological I can be both a rhetorical resource for narrators and a new analytical tool for studying the process of doing identity. The article suggests that the chronological I adds a new analytical dimension to different types of narrative analysis. The article takes its point of departure in the understanding of the narrator as using time as a rhetorical resource for telling or doing identity in ongoing interactions. In this discursive narrative approach, narratives are viewed as socially situated actions in a context in which the narrator has to relate to culturally accepted agreements about responsibility and agency. The data for this article is based on interviews with twelve individuals exposed to workplace bullying. As this topic is sensitive, there is a need for narrators to manage their accountability when asked to account for their agency or non agency in the reported events.

    Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of the article is to shed light on the social dynamic that characterizes communicative breakdowns. As a first stage, this has been explored through individual and group interviews with 34 healthcare professionals about situations where they claim there has been a communication breakdown. Based on the professionals’ testimonies, the research question was: how do professionals illustrate their experiences of communicative breakdowns? In terms of theory, the study draws upon an integrated approach to language and social interaction dynamics – for example how actors mediate positions and roles, but also present, negotiate and determine the course of action in patient cases. Findings show: (1) different degrees of severity in communicative breakdowns, and (2) that the professionals have developed and use both explicit and implicit strategies to handle ”delicate relationships” in this kind of interactions.

Flashback as a Rhetorical Online Battleground: Debating the (Dis)guise of the Nordic Resistance Movement2019In: SOCIAL MEDIA + SOCIETY, ISSN 2056-3051, Vol. 5, no 1, article id 2056305118823336Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The right-wing Swedish Nordic Resistance Movement (NRM) is increasingly active on social media. Using discursive psychology, this text explores the rhetorical organization of text and rhetorical resources used on the Swedish online forum Flashback. The aim is to reveal and problematize truth claims about NRM made by antagonists and protagonists. Questions are (1) how and what do NRM antagonists and protagonists convey in Flashback posts about NRM, and its ideology and members? (2) how do NRM antagonists and protagonists make truth claims about NRM in Flashback posts? The empirical material consisting of 1546 Flashback posts analyzed to identify typical discussions on "NMR's true nature"; accomplished social actions stemming from the posts. Findings show that the Flashback thread can be understood as being a rhetorical battle that concerns the "truth" about NRM, where a variety of rhetorical resources are used to render statements credibility and those involved legitimacy.

Lanseringen och etableringen av ett socialt problem: En analys av debatten om ledarkulturen inom svensk landslagsgymnastik i Dagens Nyheter 2012–20132015In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, Vol. 52, no 1, p. 61-79Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The launching and establishment of a social problem: An analysis of the debate on Swedish national level gymnastics in Dagens Nyheter 2012-2013

In 2012 Sweden’s largest daily newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, published a number of articles on the state of affairs in Swedish national level gymnastics. In these articles, ex-gymnasts, coaches, parents and physicians stepped forward and testified about recurrent wrongdoings and abuse against young (particularly) female gymnasts. In response to the criticism, the accused coaches and representatives of the Swedish Gymnastics Federation downsized or dismissed the criticism as inaccurate. This being said, and using discursive psychology and a qualitative design, this article sheds light upon this debate – by viewing it as a struggle between a hegemonic discourse of ”the goodness” of sports, on the one hand, a number of unfavorable and negative testimonies of the state of affairs in Swedish national level gymnastics on the other. More concretely, this struggle has been analyzed with regard to the discursive and rhetoric resources the involved parties’ used to pursue their claims about the state of affairs in Swedish national level gymnastics and the impact these resources had for their credibility and legitimacy. Questions were: Who is entitled ”to spell out” their view on the state of affairs within Swedish national level gymnastics? What is mediated and how? How are descriptions and accounts about reality constructed as credible and factual? It is concluded that social problems are launched via co-production; in this process, the gymnastics community, the research community, single individuals, and the media – were co-actors.

Metaphorical expression used in Swedish news media narratives to portray the shortage of nurses and their working conditions2016In: Journal of Advanced Nursing, ISSN 0309-2402, E-ISSN 1365-2648, Vol. 72, no 2, p. 382-395Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: The aim of the study is to uncover and reveal how nurses as a profession and their working conditions are dramatized and portrayed inSwedish media narratives about the shortage of nurses. Background: The media is an arena where stakeholders can air their views of the healthcare sector in general and the situation for nurses in particular. The focus in this study is the debate in Sweden on the shortage of nurses. Design: Qualitative discursive study. Method: A discourse analysis of media narratives about nurses and their working conditions published in several Swedish newspapers from 2009-2014. 1779 articles were included in the study. A selection (113 articles) of these articles was further analysed using a qualitative discursive psychological approach. Findings: Nurses are portrayed as being good, concerned about and critical of healthcare managers and politicians for not taking action. The accused actors justify their actions by partially accepting or displacing responsibility. The shortage of nurses is framed as a social problem - a threat to patients' safety. Seven different types of metaphorical expression frame the problem as inevitable, beyond control, abstract, an individual and collegial problem and nurses as replaceable. In addition, nurses and patients are dehumanized and no-one is held responsible. Conclusions: This study analyses the role of the media in emphasizing the seriousness or obscurity of the problem and possible solutions to it. The launching and establishment of a social problem: An analysis of the debate on Swedish national level gymnastics in Dagens Nyheter 2012-2013.2015In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, Vol. 52, no 1, p. 61-79Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In 2012 Sweden's largest daily newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, published a number of articles on the state of affairs in Swedish national level gymnastics. This being said, and using discursive psychology and a qualitative design, this article sheds light upon this debate by viewing it as a struggle between a hegemonic discourse of "the goodness" of sports, on the one hand, a number of unfavorable and negative testimonies of the state of affairs in Swedish national level gymnastics on the other. More concretely, this struggle has been analyzed with regard to the discursive and rhetoric resources the involved parties' used to pursue their claims about the state of affairs in Swedish national level gymnastics and the impact these resources had for their credibility and legitimacy. Questions were: Who is entitled "to spell out" their view on the state of affairs within Swedish national level gymnastics? What is mediated and how? How are descriptions and accounts about reality constructed as credible and factual? It is concluded that social problems are launched via co-production; in this process, the gymnastics community, the research community, single individuals, and the media - were co-actors.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Mental illness can aggravate difficulties in transcultural nursing. Migrants often have one form of mental illness or another depending on their past experiences. They might understand the healthcare systems in their homelands and also have expectations from the system in their host country. Distrust for both staff and the system might arise when these expectations are not met. Underlying cultural perceptions of mental illness can be one of the reasons why these issues are not addressed which can create more suffering for these patients. Aim: The aim was to describe nurses’ experiences of transcultural nursing in connection with care of patients with mental illness in a closed ward setting. Method: Personal interviews with eight nurses at a hospital in mid-Sweden. The interviews were processed using qualitative content analysis. Findings: Nurses identified a number of difficulties in the care of mentally ill patients whose cultural background differed from theirs. These emanated from language barriers, cultural perceptions and the nurses’ approach. Conclusion: The nurses needed to approach every patient individually to overcome cultural difficulties and mental illness. By doing this, they were able to establish individual focus and a sense of security required to reach patients and offer good care.

    Abstract [en]

Health promotion is to promote healthy living, preventing diseases and change the determinants of health through various strategies. Public health work at community level associates with intersectoral, health promoting efforts and influence by legislation, governance and policy work. The purpose of this study is to examine how health professionals perceive health promotion in Aland Islands, cooperation between different actors and the development of health promotion work in Aland Islands. A qualitative method was chosen, where four professionals from Aland Government and the Aland healthcare participated in interviews. A semi-structured interview guide where used for the interviews. A manifest content analysis method was used for analysing the material from the interviews. The results show that public health work in Åland is done both by local associations and organizations, but also by law based work. The results also indicate shortcomings in the cooperation for health promotion, but the corporation is overall good. Furthermore, the opportunities for development of health promotion and public health in Aland Islands were perceived as good. Questions like physical activity, alcohol use, drugs and the health of the elderly were considered as prioritized areas to work with. The conclusion of this study is that cooperation and collaboration between other organizations, authorities and sectors of the society should be improved to maintain the health of the population in Aland Islands, and the Aland Islands autonomy could provide a basis for guiding health promotion through laws.

    Abstract [en]

The school has a responsibility to work preventively against sexual harassment. However, surveys show that students feel that sexual harassment is occurring at school, while teachers perceive their skills in sex and cohabitation as inadequate. Through #metoo, sexual harassment had a worldwide impact.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how preventive work against sexual harassment is carried out in primary school and whether sex and cohabitation education has changed since #metoo.

The study is based on a qualitative method where data has been collected through semi-structured interviews. Interviews have been conducted with five NO teachers who teach grades 6-9 from various primary schools in Stockholm County, Västmanland County and Uppsala County. A manifest content analysis was applied to analyze the interview material.

The result shows that the work against sexual harassment is mainly done during sex and cohabitation education, in the form of discussions and exercises to promote the personal integrity of the students. Teachers feel that they do not prioritize sex and cohabitation education as much as they would like. The student health team contributes to support the teachers through counseling. Teachers feel that sex and cohabitation education has changed since #metoo, with more lively discussions in the classroom about, especially regarding sexual consent. Finally, the results show that the teachers emphasize that the work against sexual harassment is important, on the other hand, they experience a need for skills development in sex and cohabitation education and a more subject-integrated teaching.

    Abstract [en]

Background: ’Feeling of safety’ means an assurance of optimum quality of life for the individual. Patients have expectations of the medical staff and for nurses to be able to pay attention to patients' needs for feeling of safety and create patients' feelings of safety, further knowledge of what contributes to patients' perceptions of safety in the care is needed. Objective: To describe nurses experiences of factors that may influence patients' perceptions of safety in the care. Method: Qualitative interview study of six nurses in Stockholm, Sweden. The interviews have been processed using a qualitative content analysis, designed by Graneheim och Lundman (2004). Results: The nurses perceived that their attitude towards the patient could affect the patient's feeling of safety. The nurses perceived that the information they gave and the environment around the patient and the disease could affect a patient's feeling of safety. Conclusion: All patients could experience a non-feeling of safety when they had a disease and underwent treatment. The nurse's role in the creation of a feeling of safety in the care are emphasized. Nurses could create feelings of safety in the care by, for example, be confident in their professional role and inform the patient.
