Digital nomads and the Swedish supremacy – cosmopolitan and national identification among transnationally mobile Swedish Internet entrepreneurs2015Inngår i: 33. Nordic Ethnology and Folklore Conference: Copenhagen 2015, 2015Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is based on a research project studying national identification among Swedish Internet entrepreneurs and swe-des belonging to the start-up community in Berlin, New York, San Francisco and Stockholm. Swedish entrepreneurs have in recent years been establishing successful companies in the internet/tech-field, such as for example Skype and Spotify. A positive national identification and a good reputation of Swedes in this particular context, is sometimes considered an advantage for example when trying to raise venture capital and attract foreign investors. The paper examines to what extent and how “the Swedish” is something that is understood as a factor of success and how this identification is linked to a history of Swedish entrepreneurship, with parallels to the dot-com boom in the nineties, as well as present-day thri-ving companies. However, a national identification is sometimes de-emphasized in favor of a more cosmopolitan identifi-cation connected with the ideal of being mobile and a part of a global professional elite, rather being than associated with a particular nationality. The negotiation of a meritocratic identification as a cosmopolitan vagabond and expert; in this context sometimes referred to as a “digital nomad”, travelling between globally important tech hubs, and the privileged identification with a Swedish nationality is thus further examined.

    Abstract [en]

The article is based on my postdoc project that is studying national identification among a total of 23 Swedish internet and tech entrepreneurs based in Stockholm, Berlin, New York City and San Francisco. The purpose of this article is to explore how and when ”Swedishness” is considered as something of value for the informants, possible to use as an asset, for example, when it comes to attracting foreign investors, and how and when it is rather toned down in favor of a more cosmopolitan and meritocratic identification. In recent years, Sweden has had significant success in the tech/internet sector. Especially informants based in Europe highlighted the interest of Swedes on the tech scene as something important and used ”Swedishness” in their self-presentations. The informants who were based in the US, and especially in San Francisco, showed a tendency instead to emphasize an identification with a global elite. On the other hand, they also showed a greater tendency to highlight qualities of the Swedish society at large, which those who were still based in Europe did not do to the same extent

Utopian imaginaries of San Francisco among tech-entrepreneurs2015Inngår i: Utopias, Realities, Heritages: Ethnographies for the 21st Century, 2015Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This paper takes its starting point from a research project studying Swedish tech-entrepreneurs, living and working in Europe and in the US. Sweden has in recent years been playing a relevant role in the internet/tech-field with successful companies such as for example Skype and Spotify. The paper sets out to investigate San Francisco, as both an actual and an imagined place. Migrating to San Francisco (and/or Silicon Valley) is for the internet/tech-community primarily associated with opportunities for success - and it is for many entrepreneurs in the field regarded as the ultimate location to live and work. How is San Francisco constructed as a mythical, imagined place that holds relevance for the tech scene? And how is this image mediated in different channels such as for example social and traditional media? The social ideal of making a difference in a global context can be regarded as an important value for the Internet/tech community but the utopian image of San Francisco as the most important global tech hub is at the same time challenged by the city's social problems such as poverty and segregation. How do the skilled migrants of the transnational network that is the tech community experience this conflict? Including perspectives from both residents and prospective residents of San Francisco/Silicon Valley, this paper explores envisioned migration, as well as actual everyday life and concrete experiences.

    Abstract [en]

What happens when well-educated, highly skilled professionals leave their country of origin to work abroad? How do they make use of their skills and competences in another organizational framework and cultural context, and do they experience any limits regarding the acknowledgement of their seemingly transnational competences and diplomas? What kind of obstacles do they meet and what are their strategies for reestablishing professionalism and status in a new setting? In this chapter, we present the results from our ethnographic study “Polish Doctors in Swedish Medical Care”1 as a point of departure for a Bourdieu-inspired discussion on negotiations regarding symbolic capital in another national medical field (cf. Bourdieu 1984, 1988) and the conditions and limitations of transnational mobility of symbolic capital.

    Abstract [en]

The article, based on 43 narrative interviews with Swedish physicians and molecular biologists, discusses family timing and family management as crucial factors in temporary international mobility of highly skilled professionals. In the narratives, the family often created a kind of inertia and complication for a prolonged period of working abroad. The interviewees’ dreams and wishes had to be negotiated with a partner pursuing his/her own career, as well as the rest of the family, and there were also a lot of logistics and practicalities to take care of. However, mobility was also regarded as an amazing opportunity for the whole family to be together and to learn about new cultural and social contexts. In several narratives, the temporary and thus “parenthetic” living abroad influenced the otherwise cherished ideals of dual careers, equal gender contract and a respectful parenthood.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation concerns everyday life and sustainability in sparsely populated parts of Northern Sweden. The aim is to study how sustainability is constructed, experienced, practised and perceived in a field of tension between local everyday life and political discourses.

Apart from written material, the study is based on interviews and observations performed in the municipalities Strömsund and Örnsköldsvik. Empirical themes include everyday life movements and means of transport, work and spare time practices, and experiences of time. The central theoretical concepts used are everyday life, provinces of meanings, typifications, community, place and policy. These concepts shape the analysis of processes pertaining to space and movement, work and leisure, time and tempo.

The study shows gaps between sustainability policies and local experiences of sustainability. In order to highlight complications like the ones between the center and the periphery, polices and lived experiences, I have stressed the importance of the social dimension of sustainability. It is nevertheless important to nuance the concept of social sustainability since it carries an ambiguity, for example in terms of collisions with other dimensions of sustainability. Socially good life styles have a tendency to collide with the ecological definitions of sustainability. The emphasis on the social dimensions has been done in order to draw attention to unfair effects from a time-space perspective, and to point at the problem with urban norms in policies on sustainability.

Dancing at the Crossroads: Memory and Mobility in Ireland2007Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

"Dancing at the crossroads" used to be an opportunity for young people to meet and enjoy themselves on mild summer evenings in the Irish countryside until this practice was banned by the Public Dance Halls Act of 1935. Now a key metaphor in Irish cultural and political life, "dancing at the crossroads" also crystallizes the argument of this book: Irish dance, from Riverdance (the commericial show) to competitive dancing and dance theatre, conveys that Ireland is in a crossroads situations. Irish dance, with a firm base in a distinctly Irish tradition, is becoming a prominent part of European modernity. While this book highlights the captivating tensions and ties surrounding debates on Irish dance, it also aims to extend broader understandings of place, mobility and rooted cosmopolitanism.

Introduction: The Cultural Study of Mood and Meaning2007Inngår i: The Emotions: A Cultural Reader, Berg Publishers, Oxford , 2007Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This introductory chapter provides a critical review of the study of emotions in anthropology, sociology, psychology and cultural studies. It discusss cultural and social science research on emotions in relation to the major topics of the Reader: opening with the study of emotions in terms of culture, biology and ecology, and moving on to captivating cases of happiness, fear and envy, as well as to investigations into love and hate; anger, shame and grief, desire and expectations, and the emotional self and identity. Based on classic articles on emotions, the Reader applies a cross-cultural perspective which reveals a whole range of new issues in the study of emotions brought out in commissioned articles. This chapter offers an analytical synthesis of the study of emotions, which will show the force, richness and omnipresence of emotions in modern social life.

Longing for the Land: Emotions, Memory, and Nature in Irish Travel Advertisements2007Inngår i: Identities: Global Studies in Culture and Power, ISSN 1070-289X, Vol. 14, nr 4, s. 527-541Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

With its large diaspora, Ireland has a long tradition of travel ranging from emigration to return migration, expatriate visits as well as tourism. Although Irish tourism increased substantially with the climax of the so-called Celtic Tiger in the early 1990s, Ireland was a major tourist destination even before that. This article explores emotions, memory and nature in images (in travel catalogues and on the Internet) advertising Ireland in a global context. The images target Irish expatriates, indigenous tourists and non-Irish tourists in Europe, the United States and Australia. Images featuring pastoral landscapes, rural harmony and dramatic cliffs can be emotionally evocative in different ways, exemplifying people’s social relationships to their environment. Central themes in the images are expatriate emotions of displacement, longing and nostalgia often connected with Irish nationalism while at the same time managing to include non-Irish people. This confirms the notion of images as ambiguous, yet points at the possibility of steering the viewer’s attention through a caption including “home” and “our land”. The article also focuses on expatriare emotions that recur in the narrative of Irish travel advertisements in an increasingly globalized world.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The research subject is the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm as a public institution between 1943 and 2013. I examine how public spaces in the museum body are designed in relation to cultural policy objectives and the museum’s vision of a democratic, inclusive museum. However, the focus is not on the museum’s exhibits, but on other public spaces visitors encounter in the museum, mainly the entrance, the shop and children’s spaces. These spaces tend to be invisible in the museum hierarchy, and their practices are rarely observed in museum studies. Main research questions are: How are democratic ideals materialized and expressed over time? Which publics are created by the public spaces?

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate what underlying causes drive people to take part in the Swedish autonomous left-wing movement. The autonomous left-wing movement is an extraparliamentary mob, in Sweden often attributed in negative terms, considered as extremists. Interviewing six activists has given me the chance to better understand the movement in terms of ideology as well as understanding their lack of reliability in the Swedish government and other social structures. The study also shows a complexity in the relationship between the interviewees and fascists, as well as in the Swedish police and the Swedish migration office, which is based on a combination of ideological values as well as a lack of trust to the Swedish system as a whole.

Cultural Perspectives on Highly Skilled Mobility

This special issue is based on a panel at the 33rd Ethnology and Folklore Conference in Copenhagen in 2015, and focuses on cultural perspective on international mobility of highly educated employees. The articles’ joint analytical input can be summarized in Russell King’s (2002) phrase “double embeddedness of migration”. Everyday life and people’s narrated experiences are at the heart of the articles, but the focus is also set on the intersection of structural conditions and individual life circumstances. Mobility across national borders contributes with new experiences and knowledge and has different kinds of impact on social status and the individual’s resources acquired by education. This is something the voluntarily mobile have in common with those who are forced to leave their countries of origin. However, there are crucial differences in how highly skilled professionals are received and regarded in the countries they come to, the status they can achieve and the framework within which they can make use of their assets.

Inre utlänningskontroll: En etnologisk studie av svenska polisers berättelser om och erfarenheter av arbetet2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
