    Abstract [en]

    Several attempts have been made in the past to develop a European harmonized testing and assessment method for façades before the European commission decided to publish a call for tender on the topic. A project consortium from five countries (Sweden, UK, France, Germany and Hungary) applied to the call for tender and was contracted to develop a European approach to assess the fire performance of façades. 24 sub-contractors and 14 stakeholder entities were part of the project.

    The objective of the European project was to address a request from the Standing Committee of Construction (SCC) to provide EC Member States regulators with a means to regulate the fire performance of façade systems based on a European approach agreed by SCC. In addressing this objective, the project team was asked to consider a number of issues which are presented and discussed.

    The initial stages of this project were focused on:

    • establishing a register of the regulatory requirements in all Member States in relation to the fire performance of façade systems, and
    • to identify those Member States who have regulatory requirements for the fire performance façade systems which go beyond the current EN 13501 (reaction to fire and fire resistance) classification systems and to collate the details of these additional requirements. [6]

    After having confirmed the regulatory needs the following steps were discussed:

    • a testing and classification methodology based on BS 8414 - Fire performance of external cladding systems series and DIN 4102-20 - Fire behaviour of building materials and building components - Part 20: Complementary verification for the assessment of the fire behaviour of external wall claddings to address the identified key performance and classification characteristics [4] [5]
    • a verification and validation proposal, in the form of a round robin programme to support the development of the proposed testing and classification methodologies.
    • an alternative test method which was developed on the basis of the comments from stakeholders during the project

    Several hundreds of comments were received during the project and were implemented in the development.

    This paper is a short overview of results the two-year development work, which Final Report published by the European Commission in 2018 [1].

    Abstract [en]

    Façade fires do not occur often (in comparison to other major structure fires) but in recent years there have been a number of spectacular façade fires in high rise building such as the recent fire in Grenfell Tower, London.Under-ventilated compartment fires may cause flames to spill out of window openings impinging the façade, thus devastating façade fires may start on one floor leap-frogging to adjacent floors. It is therefore necessary to limit or delay fire spread to higher floors. Requirements built on large scale fire testing may decrease the risk of these types of fires provided that the building is constructed according to the specifications provided by the manufacturer. Different countries have different regulations and tests for façades. New materials and façade systems are continuously introduced which might call for an update of these tests and regulations.This report summarizes experimental and modelling efforts in characterizing the fire safety of façades using the Swedish SP Fire 105 and the British BS 8414 methods. Recent experimental results and modelling is presented exploring the variations in the fire exposure, fire load and the fuel used. The fire source and the heat exposure to the façade are characterized by additional temperatures measured by plate thermometers while some other aspects are only treated in the numerical study such as a change in fuel. It is found that the results from the BS 8414 are largely affected by wind and climate since the experimental test was performed outdoors, moreover fire spread on wooden façades is also briefly discussed.In order to obtain a deeper understanding of the test methods and the results CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) Modelling in FDS was used. The models were based on measured input parameters including uncertainties and an assessment of the impact of said uncertainties. The models could often reproduce the experimentally found temperatures qualitatively and quantitatively. A detailed discussion on the regulations and the tests that lead to the SP Fire 105 test method is also presented. Summaries of the façade testing methods and conditions in other European countries are presented in the appendices.Finally possible ways forward in updating the façade testing and regulations are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

    A comparison between full‐scale façade fire tests where SP Fire 105 and BS 8414‐1 were used regarding repeatability and the use of modeling to discern changes in the setups is presented. Two test series according to BS 8414‐1 were repeated outside using the same façade systems on 2 different days, whereas for the SP Fire 105 a set of common façade systems in Sweden were tested indoors. In particular, the results show that the wind around the test setup may have a significant impact on the tests and that the heat exposure to the façade surface will depend on the thickness of the test specimen where an increased temperature in front of the façade, and a decreased temperature on the façade 2.1 m above the fire room, is observed experimentally. The heat exposure to the test specimen varies to a more limited extent when an uncontrollable free burning fire source is used (in this study heptane and wood, respectively) and that this variation increases when wind is present.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper, a comparative simulation study on 3 large‐scale facade testing methods, namely,the SP Fire 105, BS 8414‐1, and the ISO 13785‐2 methods, is presented. Generally goodcorrespondence between simulations and experimental data has been found, provided thatthermal properties of the facade material and heat release rates are known; however, thecorrespondence deviates in close proximity of the fire source. Furthermore, a statistical ensemblefor evaluating the effects stemming from uncertainty in input data is used. Here, it wasfound using this statistical ensemble that the variability was smaller in the ISO 13785‐2compared to the BS 8414‐1 method. The heat release rates (HRR) used in the simulations wereadopted from measurements except for the ISO method where the information in the standardwas used to approximate the HRR. A quantitative similarity between the HRR in the ISOmethod and the British method was found.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper a comparison between test and modelling results are performed for two large-scale façade fire testing methods, namely SP Fire 105 and BS 8414-1. In order to be able to compare tests and modelling the uncertainties have to be quantified both in the test and the modelling. Here we present a methodology based on deterministic sampling to quantify uncertainties in the modelling input. We find, in general good agreement between the models and the test results. Moreover, temperatures estimated by plate thermometers is indicated to be less sensitive to small variations in model input and is thus suitable for these kind of comparisons.

    Presented is a comparison between full-scale façade tests where SP Fire 105 and BS 8414-1 were used regarding repeatability and the use of modelling to discern changes in the set-ups. Results show that the air movements around the test set-up (the wind) may have a significant impact on the tests and that the heat exposure to the façade surface will among other depend on the thickness of the test specimen. Also demonstrated was that good results could be obtained by modelling of the façade fire tests giving us the opportunity to use these methods to determine the effect of a change in the experimental setup.

    Abstract [en]

    Modelling of structures exposed to fires is prone to be heavily influenced by uncertainties in geometrical parameters, thermal material data as well as uncertainties in the boundary conditions. Assessing the effects and influences in variations of all the uncertain parameters is often cumbersome and traditional methods are impractical thus modelling of the total uncertainty is needed. Uncertainty Quantification with deterministic sampling is one possible way ahead to accommodate and evaluating the effects of uncertainties with as few repeated simulations as possible. In this paper the uncertainties stemming from error in the input data and boundary conditions on one example of a steel beam under four point bending exposed to fire is evaluated.

    Abstract [en]

    In this paper a coarse graining process is used to subsequently model large wildland fires, starting from a model of a single tree. The models are created using Wildland Urban Interface Fire dynamics Simulator (WFDS), and it is here found that reasonable fire spread in small forests can be obtained although the results are quite dependent on grid resolution as well as moisture content. In most realistic scenarios the computational volume is rather large yielding massive amounts of data. In using WFDS a rather small grid size is needed to appropriately model the fire spread this will be a severely limiting factor in creating large models.

    This paper demonstrates the possibility to predict a battery system's performance in a fire resistance test according to the new amendment of United Nations Regulation No. 100 "Uniform Provisions Concerning the Approval of Vehicles with Regard to Specific Requirements for the Electric Power Train" (R100) based on careful measurements of the physical properties of the casing material, as well as modeling of the battery modules and computer simulations. The methodology of the work consists of estimating the heat transfer coefficients by using a gasoline pool fire model in the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software FIRE DYNAMICS SIMULATOR (FDS), followed by finite-element (FE) calculations of the temperatures in the battery.

    Assessment of Self-Heating in Wood Pellets by FE Modelling2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    The self-heating process in a laboratory scale experiment has been modelled using the Comsol Multiphysics software. In the simulations the gas flow and air movement in the volume and heat diffusion in the bulk were taken into account however only one reaction in the pellets bulk is considered. The input data is found from measurements of the reaction chemistry and the heat transfer properties. It is found that all relevant physics is needed in order to obtain reasonable predictions in particular the heat transfer between the bulk and the gas is important but also condensation and evaporation of moisture.

    Abstract [en]

    The present paper investigates a travelling fire scenario in an elongated structure (Length 18 m x width 6 m x height 3 m) with a controlled fire source of six pans filled with diesel (width 4 m x length 0.5 m). The fire spread is controlled manually by initiating fires subsequently in the pools. Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) is used to a-priori investigate variations in geometry, material data and fire load whereas simulations using the final design were performed after the test. The input to the model beside fire source and geometry are thermal material data. The FDS simulation were used to determine the appropriate size of the downstands (2 m from the ceiling in the final design) on the side to create a sufficiently one-dimensional fire spread. The post test simulations indicate that although there are a lot of variations not included in the model similar results were obtained as in the test.

    Abstract [en]

    Onshore and offshore studies show that an expanded, grounded ice sheet occupied the Ross Sea Embayment during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Results from studies of till provenance and the orientation of geomorphic features on the continental shelf show that more than half of the grounded ice sheet consisted of East Antarctic ice flowing through Transantarctic Mountain (TAM) outlet glaciers; the remainder came from West Antarctica. Terrestrial data indicate little or no thickening in the upper catchment regions in both West and East Antarctica during the LGM. In contrast, evidence from the mouths of the southern and central TAM outlet glaciers indicate surface elevations between 1000 m and 1100 m (above present-day sea level). Farther north along the western margin of the Ross Ice Sheet, surface elevations reached 720 m on Ross Island, and 400 m at Terra Nova Bay. Evidence from Marie Byrd Land at the eastern margin of the ice sheet indicates that the elevation near the present-day grounding line was more than 800 m asl, while at Siple Dome in the central Ross Embayment, the surface elevation was about 950 m asl. Farther north, evidence that the ice sheet was grounded on the middle and the outer continental shelf during the LGM implies that surface elevations had to be at least 100 m above the LGM sea level. The apparent low surface profile and implied low basal shear stress in the central and eastern embayment suggests that although the ice streams may have slowed during the LGM, they remained active. Ice-sheet retreat from the western Ross Embayment during the Holocene is constrained by marine and terrestrial data. Ages from marine sediments suggest that the grounding line had retreated from its LGM outer shelf location only a few tens of kilometer to a location south of Coulman Island by similar to 13 ka BP. The ice sheet margin was located in the vicinity of the Drygalski Ice Tongue by similar to 11 ka BP, just north of Ross Island by similar to 7.8 ka BP, and near Hatherton Glacier by similar to 6.8 ka BP. Farther south, Be-10 exposure ages from glacial erratics on nunataks near the mouths of Reedy, Scott and Beardmore Glaciers indicate thinning during the mid to late Holocene, but the grounding line did not reach its present position until 2 to 3 ka BP. Marine dates, which are almost exclusively Acid Insoluble Organic (AIO) dates, are consistently older than those derived from terrestrial data. However, even these ages indicate that the ice sheet experienced significant retreat after similar to 13 ka BP. Geomorphic features indicate that during the final stages of ice sheet retreat ice flowing through the TAM remained grounded on the shallow western margin of Ross Sea. The timing of retreat from the central Ross Sea remains unresolved; the simplest reconstruction is to assume that the grounding line here started to retreat from the continental shelf more or less in step with the retreat from the western and eastern sectors. An alternative hypothesis, which relies on the validity of radiocarbon ages from marine sediments, is that grounded ice had retreated from the outer continental shelf prior to the LGM. More reliable ages from marine sediments in the central Ross Embayment are needed to test and validate this hypothesis.

    Geomorphic expression of collapsing ice streams revealed by latest generation swath bathymetry images2011Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    There is now a substantial swath bathymetry data set from Antarctica that reveals subglacial bedforms, in particular mega-scale glacial lineations, which were formed by ice streams that occupied glacial troughs during the LGM. However, with the exception of grounding zone wedges, few studies have yielded high-resolution sea floor images that show geomorphic features formed by retreating ice streams. For example, deep-tow side-scan sonar records from Ross Sea show a range of recessional features, mostly 1-3 meters high, that overprint mega-scale glacial lineations. These features were not imaged in swath bathymetry records. During the 2010 austral summer, the Swedish ice breaker Oden was used to conduct an extensive survey in the sparsely studied central trough in Pine Island Bay using the latest generation multibeam technology. The bedforms imaged in Pine Island Bay are similar to small-scale recessional features previously imaged in Ross Sea using deep-tow side-scan sonar. These include fishbone moraines and corrugated iceberg furrows, which we argue were produced daily through tidally-influenced motion of a disintegrating ice shelf. During this event a 65 km long stretch of the trough was cleared of floating ice in about 1.5 years. The break-up occurred ~12,000 cal ka BP and was likely a response to rapid sea-level rise at that time. Acquisition of more high-resolution swath bathymetry data should greatly increase our understanding of ice stream interaction with the seafloor and those factors that have influenced ice stream behavior during retreat. Future work should focus on the rugged inner shelf, were subglacial meltwater is believed to have contributed to ice stream instability.

    Kompetens har blivit en allt viktigare konkurrensfaktor för dagens organisationer. Därför har allt fler organisationer börjat arbeta mer aktivt med kompetensfrågor och Uddeholm Tooling AB är inget undantag. Kompetens kan beskrivas utifrån ett antal olika teorier. Vi har i uppsatsen valt att använda oss av ett kunskapskluster för att beskriva kompetensskapandet inom Uddeholm Tooling AB. Kunskapsklustret består av tre kognitiva processer och de utgörs av berättelser, samarbete och den sociala konstruktionen. Syftet med uppsatsen är att beskriva hur berättandet, den sociala konstruktionen och samarbetet bidrar till kompetensskapandet inom en avdelning på Uddeholm Tooling AB. Utifrån syftet har en forskningsfråga preciserats enligt följande. När och hur sker kompetensskapandet och hur bidrar berättandet, den sociala konstruktionen och samarbetet? Vi har i uppsatsen använt oss av en kvalitativ metod och vi har genomfört fokuserade, semistrukturerade intervjuer med medarbetare på Uddeholm Tooling AB. Utifrån det empiriska materialet som erhölls vid intervjuerna gjorde vi tolkningar med utgångspunkt i vårt teoretiska tolkningsverktyg. Vi kom i uppsatsen fram till att kompetensskapandet sker inom fyra huvudfält. Kompetens genom praktik, lärlingskapet, skiftlagen och de extraordinära händelserna var fält inom vilka kompetensskapandet sker. Berättandet, den sociala konstruktionen och samarbetet bidrar till kompetensskapandet inom det fyra fälten. De tre processerna berättande, samarbete och social konstruktion finns där hela tiden på avdelningen och det framträder extra tydligt i lärlingsskapet, det praktiska arbetet, i samband med de extraordinära händelserna och vid överlämningarna mellan skiftlagen.

    The client in this study, Attentec, has seen an increase in the demand for services connected to Internet of things systems. This study is therefore examining if there is a tool that can be a used to build fast prototype visualisations of data from IoT systems to use as a tool in their daily work.

    The study started with an initial phase with two parts. The first part was to get better knowledge of Attentec and derive requirements for the tool and the second part was a comparison of prototyping tools for aiding in development of data visualisations. Apache Zeppelin was chosen as the most versatile and suitable tool matching the criteria defined together with Attentec. Following the initial phase a pre-study containing interviews to collect empirical data on how visualisations and IoT projects had been implemented previously at Attentec were performed. This lead to the conclusion that geospatial data and NoSQL databases were common for IoT projects. A technical investigation was conducted on Apache Zeppelin to answer if there were any limits in using the tool for characteristics common in IoT system. This investigation lead to the conclusion that there was no support for plotting data on a map.

    The first implementation phase implemented support for geospatial data by adding a visualisation plug-in that plotted data on a map. The implementation phase was followed by an evaluation phase in which 5 participants performed tasks with Apache Zeppelin to evaluate the perceived usability of the tool. The evaluation was performed using a System Usability Scale and a Summed Usability Metric as well as interviews with the participants to find where improvements could be made. From the evaluation three main problems were discovered, the import and mapping of data, more feature on the map visualisation plug-in and the creation of database queries. The first two were chosen for the second iteration where a script for generating the code to import data was developed as well as improvements to the geospatial visualisation plug-in. A second evaluation was performed after the changes were made using similar tasks as in the first to see if the usability was improved between the two evaluations. The results of the Summed Usability Metric improved on all tasks and the System Usability Scale showed no significant change. In the interviews with the participants they all responded that the perceived usability had improved between the two evaluations suggesting some improvement.

    Rapportens syfte är att beskriva det tekniska och teoretiska framtagandet av e-boktjänsten BookShark. Den innehåller bland annat styrkanden rörande tjänstens hållbarhet på marknaden samt hur teamet har förhållit sig till arbetsmetoden Scrum. Målgruppen för BookShark är kunder som vill ha möjligheten att handla böcker online på ett smidigt sätt till ett förmånligt pris. Utifrån detta har teamet arbetat enligt visionen Vår vision är att revolutionera sättet människor konsumerar böcker på genom att göra böcker billigare och mer lättillgängliga för alla.

    Den tekniska utvecklingen har delats upp i fyra lager: Databas, Databasinterface, Serverskript och Front-end. Teammedlemmarna har delat upp ansvarområden inom dessa fyra lager, men samtidigt haft en kontinuerlig uppdatering om varandras arbete för att på så sätt ha koll på respektive teammedlems arbete.

    BookShark har uppnått den kravspecifikation som sattes av teamet i projektets början, och även om viss utveckling fortfarande skulle krävas för en kommersiell lansering har önskad funktionalitet uppnåtts.

    The rapid development of new diagnostic procedures, the mapping of the human genome, progress in mapping genetic polymorphisms, and recent advances in nucleic acid- and protein chip technologies are driving the development of personalized therapies. This breakthrough in medicine is expected to be achieved largely due to the implementation of "lab-on-the-chip" technology capable of performing hundreds, even thousands of biochemical, cellular and genetic tests on a single sample of blood or other body fluid. Focusing on a few disease-specific examples, this review discusses selected technologies and their combinations likely to be incorporated in the "lab-on-the-chip" and to provide rapid and versatile information about specific diseases entities. Focusing on breast cancer and after an overview of single-nucleofide polymorphism (SNP)-screening methodologies, we discuss the diagnostic and prognostic importance of SNPs. Next, using Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) as an example, we provide a brief overview of powerful and innovative integration of traditional immuno-histochemistry techniques with advanced biophysical methods such as NMR-spectroscopy or Fourier-transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. A brief overview of the challenges and opportunities provided by protein and aptamer microarrays follows. We conclude by highlighting novel and promising biochemical markers for the development of personalized treatment of cancer and other diseases: serum cytochrome c, cytokeratin-18 and -19 and their proteolytic fragments for the detection and quantitation of malignant tumor mass, tumor cell turn-over, inflammatory processes during hepatitis and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-induced hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis and apoptotic/necrotic cancer cell death.     Ecologists studying consumer-resource interactions in advection-dominated systems such as streams and rivers frequently seek to link the results of small-scale experiments with larger-scale patterns of distribution and abundance. Accomplishing this goal requires determining the characteristic scale, termed the response length, at which there is a shift from local dynamics dominated by advective dispersal to larger-scale dynamics dominated by births and deaths. Here, we model the dynamics of consumer-resource systems in a spatially variable, advective environment and show how consumer-resource interactions alter the response length relative to its single-species value. For one case involving a grazer that emigrates in response to high predator density, we quantify the changes using published data from small-scale experiments on aquatic invertebrates. Using Fourier analysis, we describe the responses of advection-dominated consumer-resource systems to spatially extended environmental variability in a way that involves explicit consideration of the response length. The patterns we derive for different consumer-resource systems exhibit important similarities in how component populations respond to spatial environmental variability affecting dispersal as opposed to demographic parameters.

    We model the spatial dynamics of an open population of organisms that disperse solely through advection in order to understand responses to multiscale environmental variability. We show that the distance over which a population responds to a localized perturbation, called the response length, can be characterized as an organisms average lifetime dispersal distance, unless there is strong density-dependence in demographic or dispersal rates. Continuous spatial fluctuations in demographic rates at scales smaller than the response length will be largely averaged in the population distribution, whereas those in per capita emigration rates will be strongly tracked. We illustrate these results using a parameterized example to show how responses to environmental variability may differ in streams with different average current velocities. Our model suggests an approach to linking local dynamics dominated by dispersal processes to larger-scale dynamics dominated by births and deaths.

    Background Psoriatic plaques present a complex expression profile, including high levels of cytokines, chemokines and growth factors. Circulating cytokines have been suggested to reflect the activation status of the inflammatory process. Objectives To analyse 20 cytokines, chemokines and growth factors in 14 patients with psoriasis vulgaris at the start and during the course of ultraviolet B treatment. Methods A multiplex cytokine assay was used. Results We identified increased serum levels of epidermal growth factor (EGF) (mean 323 vs. 36 6 pg mL(-1), P = 0 0001), interleukin (IL)-1 receptor antagonist (mean 39 1 vs. 14 6 pg mL(-1), P = 0 02) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (mean 7 5 vs. 4 5 pg mL(-1), P = 0 04) at baseline in patients with psoriasis compared with matched controls. None of these cytokines was correlated to the severity of the disease (Psoriasis Area and Severity Index) or decreased with phototherapy, suggesting that sources other than lesional skin contribute to the production of these cytokines. Using cluster analysis, we observed coordinate upregulation of EGF, IL-6, macrophage inflammatory protein-1 beta and vascular endothelial growth factor. Conclusions The sustained high expression of inflammatory circulating cytokines is a potential mechanism linking psoriasis with its extracutaneous comorbidities.

    BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a disease of dysregulated inflammation and epithelial hyperproliferation in the skin, involving both the innate and adaptive immune system. Psoriatic keratinocytes express high levels of psoriasin (S100A7), a small calcium-binding protein. OBJECTIVES: To determine if patients with active psoriasis have elevated serum levels of psoriasin and psoriasin-specific autoantibodies. METHODS: Blood was collected from 14 patients with psoriasis vulgaris at the start of narrowband ultraviolet (UV) B therapy and from 11 of these patients every 2 weeks during the course of the UVB treatment. Patient and control sera were tested for psoriasin antigen levels by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and for psoriasin autoantibody titres using recombinant purified psoriasin and overlapping peptides. RESULTS: We confirmed strong and specific expression of psoriasin in psoriatic epidermis by immunohistochemistry. Systemic psoriasin antigen levels tended to be lower in patients (mean 213 ng mL(-1)) than in controls (mean 331 ng mL(-1), P = 0.308) and decreased with increasing disease severity. Psoriasin-specific autoantibodies were detected in a subset of patients with psoriasis and healthy normal donors (mean 0.347 vs. 0.255 units, P = 0.246). The epitopes recognized by the autoantibodies were mapped to an external loop domain of the molecule but did not show corresponding T-cell immunogenicity. CONCLUSIONS: Although psoriasin is overexpressed in psoriatic skin lesions, systemic levels of psoriasin tended to be lower with increasing disease severity, which may be due to the presence of psoriasin-specific autoantibodies. Neither psoriasin nor psoriasin-specific autoantibodies appear to be promising serum biomarkers for clinical psoriasis.

    The Information Systems research group at Mid Sweden University is the result of four separate groups, spread across three disciplines, artificially thrown together because we didn’t seem to fit into other developed research groups. What we were seen to have in common was ‘information’. The disciplines are: Archives and Information Science, Business Management and Organization, and Informatics.

    Shortly after this uncertain start, the University launched a demanding internal process for Assessment of Research and Coproduction (ARC13) over the previous five years. We didn’t have that much past together, so we set out to build ourselves a future, exploring our common interests as we gathered data for the evaluation. We pooled our research, hired a facilitator to help with a SWOT analysis, built trust within the group and achieved a remarkably good report from the external assessors. Participation in the multidisciplinary InterPARES Trust in Digital Records in an Increasingly Networked World Project has been an inspiring factor in the Archives and Information Science contribution to our new collaboration. Our Information Systems research group now focuses on five research challenges: Information value, quality, accessibility, sustainability and trustworthiness.  Now we are having fun exploring the possibilities, confident that our InfoSys research group has its own sustainable future.

    Educators and trainers in the field of archives and records management face the challenge of providing for practitioners with a widely varying educational background while preparing them for a professional environment that has changed rapidly in recent years.  Development of research programs is also crucial to the advancement of the profession and the survival of university-based professional education in the discipline.  Competency standards for records management are discussed, including their appropriate role in training and education for practioners. Examples of education and training programs from around the world are mentioned, although the coverage in this article is not intended to be exhaustive.  The role of professional associations as providers of training and in supporting and evaluating professional education programs is also addressed. The International Council on Archives Section for Archival Educators and Trainers provides a community of practice for educators and trainers. Its objectives and recent activities are described.

     

    A wide and growing range of career choices is available to archivists and records managers. Traditional employers are national and regional archives, but there are many opportunities for specialising in aspects of the profession and the types of organisations served by the archives. Professionals with the necessary expertise required to manage digital services are in demand. Initiatives to support people of indigenous origin joining the profession and encouragement for the development of community archives are an area of growing interest.

    Purpose – This paper aims to explore the definitions of and the differences between education and training and the role of each in nurturing and supporting lifelong learning for records professionals: records managers and archivists.

     

    Design/methodology/approach – General definitions of “education”, “training”, “competence” and “competencies” have been deliberately selected as an accessible starting-point for reflection. Different models for competencies and the lack of consensus on what constitutes an appropriate competency model for the profession are considered.

     

    Findings – Education provides new professionals with knowledge of theory of the discipline and helps them to explore current practice. It provides the information-seeking skills and encourages a reflective habit that underpins independent lifelong learning. Training focuses on acquisition of specific skills and competencies necessary in the workplace. More is needed for a viable professional future; education for research is essential to the development of professional knowledge and for the survival of education programmes in universities.

     

    Practical implications – Professional associations as leaders of opinion and practice have an important role in finding the way forward. Although competency standards are more appropriate for evaluating training programmes, professional associations which have embraced competency standards have attempted to use them to evaluate education programmes, but prefer not to consider evaluating training programmes and training providers.

     

    Originality/value – This paper aims to raise awareness of the need to give appropriate weight to education, training and research to ensure that records professionals are known for high levels of competence as well as productive reflection and creative forward thinking.

    Abstract [en]

    The International Council on Archives Section for Archival Educators and Trainers (ICA/SAE) has had a research agenda as one of its projects for eight years, but to date there has been little contribution and no real outcomes. A research database has also been developed by ICA/SAE, with the purpose of documenting research projects of any size from dissertations to collaborative projects. It remains to encourage researchers and research students to record their projects and keep them up to date. One of the main barriers to developing strong research programmes in universities is the difficulty of developing a research culture in small programmes where academics carry heavy teaching and administrative loads. A learning community of potential researchers must be developed, as well as ways to encourage connections for future partnerships between experienced and novice researchers as well as between university-based researchers and practitioners. A few very successful collaborative research programmes have been developed and we can learn from them. These include InterPARES, the Records Continuum Research Group and the Cedars Project. They are exemplified by

    •a clear focus for their research;

    •collaboration between universities and industry partners;

    •a clear management structure and sound documentation;

    •a well-managed website for dissemination of research products.

    Abstract [en]

    An implementation program for organisation-wide recordkeeping systems in two Swedish local governments is being informed by a research-based approach in cooperation with Mid Sweden University. The Sundsvall and Härnösand municipalities will provide the platform for the Research Centre’s major project for 2009-2011, which brings together experience in researching recordkeeping issues in small and medium enterprises as well as expertise in enterprise information architecture and content management. The last two provide an umbrella for document, records and archives management, web content management and business process management. The aim of this enterprise information management strategy is to promote support by decision-makers for a whole of organisation approach to sound records and information management. The overall aim of the research program is to develop models and implementation methods that will support standards-compliant, efficient and long-term digital information management in both public and private organisations.

    Legislation is important to recordkeeping strategies and requirements, since it determines which records are needed for legally legitimate actions. Yet the concepts of a document, a record, a case, a transaction, etc., are frequently defined differently in various laws even within national boundaries and are urgently in need of harmonization to minimize complications and barriers to e-business transactions.

    Every country has its own legislation system which has been adjusted over time in correlation to national context and its surrounding society (Duranti, 1989-1990, p. 5). Duranti and Goh (2012) provided sound arguments as to why it is important to ensure national archival legislation keeps pace with our digitally networked society with its increasingly blurred borders. In addition to their own national law, members of the European Union (EU) are obliged to follow EU-legislation requirements. There are three types of EU legislation: regulations, directives and decisions. A regulation is applicable in all EU countries. Directives are general rules. A decision is a stipulation of issues of concern for specifically mentioned persons or organizations (European Commission, 2013).  Recommendations and statements are not binding, but may, for example, be used by the EU as support in interpretation of EU-legislation (Sveriges Riksdag, 2013). Hence, within public organizations, there is a close relation between records, recordkeeping processes, legislation and accountability.  Yet research in Sweden has shown that 24/7 e-service web-interfaces serving e-government strategies and ambitions are sometimes developed without consulting recordkeeping professionals, in ignorance of legal requirements for capture of records and that preservation issues are rarely considered when acquiring new digital systems (Kallberg, Svärd and Sundberg, 2010). Several other European studies also identify a lack of recordkeeping awareness within public organizations (Barata, 2004; Valtonen, 2007; Shepherd, Stevenson, & Flinn, 2009; Riksarkivet, 2010). However, there is currently a strong European political ambition to implement eGovernment services, which aims to promote cross-border business development. On the other hand, this challenges archival thinking to meet business, technological and legal requirements stipulated for each country. Varying legal definitions used can cause major problems for transactions both within a country and across national borders, even in something as seemingly simple as exchanging e-invoices. This paper will discuss an approach to identifying a way forward for harmonizing legislation that contains recordkeeping requirements across the EU.

    • Identifying the range of / types of laws within countries and EU that define a record
    • Using the ICA multilingual terminology database, to check and add to definitions already found there
    • Checking against definitions found in international standards.

    Research towards harmonizing these crucial definitions will be very challenging, given linguistic and cultural differences but the ICA multilingual terminology database is a potential vehicle for checking existing usage, adding to the definitions and quotations from legalislation and the literature already found there and adding new terms. The foundation version of the ICA-funded Terminology Database, developed as an ICA Section for Archival Educators’ project led and hosted by the University of British Columbia, contains definitions with examples of usage for an initial 300 archival terms across 16 languages. It is planned for public release in the first half of 2013.

    The author, a senior lecturer at Edith Cowan University in Australia, discusses the literature used to teach macroappraisal of electronic records through distance education techniques within an environment rooted in the Australian records continuum. In this context, students are given a sound grounding in systems analysis and design, as well as functional appraisal and the importance of metadata. A key teaching element is the International Standards Organization’s Information and Documentation – Records Management (ISO 15489), which she demonstrates has strong parallels to the principles of systems analysis and design.

    Australian archival authorities take a very active role in setting records management standards, providing guidelines for records managers in their work and approving records retention and disposal schedules for state and national government agencies. Thus ‘archivists’ in Australia have a very strong role in records management processes. There are two principal drivers for this approach: one is the practical matter of capturing and managing digital records, and the other is the acceptance of the Records continuum theoretical model. This paper  outlines some specific approaches taken to identifying and managing archival records in Australian government systems and how this affects the structure of the recordkeeping professions and professional education.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper explores the possibilities for international common core curricula across archival education programmes in three ways. Three universities’ existing but independently developed curricula are analysed to identify common core content. The development of the programmes over time is also described noting some of the influences that have contributed to the current content of the three programmes.            A survey of the views of archival educators on the possibilities and the barriers to developing and sharing courses internationally was also conducted. Some attempts to cooperatively develop shared courses across international borders are also described, demonstrating that collaboration between archival educators is in progress.

    Sustainable archives and preservation education in a global digital society demand collaborative frameworks and multiple, geographically diverse partnerships.  This poses considerable challenges for educators. A consortium between archival education programs at University College London, Mid Sweden University and Simmons College, Boston, is addressing these challenges within an innovative virtual learning environment developed, built and shared among the three schools. Participants from each of the three programs describe, analyze and demonstrate ongoing collaboration, research and curriculum development unified through the Digital Curriculum Laboratory (DCL). They also explore the implications of these types of learning resources and collaborative approaches for supporting archives education internationally.
