Det förlorade landet: Människors bild av och syn på Jugoslavien i exilen.2017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study is an analysis of how people from the former Yugoslavia saw their homeland. The aim is to investigate exiled Yugoslavs’ view of their homeland. The paper will also examine how Yugoslavia contributes to nostalgia. Additionally examine various groups’ of people view of Yugoslavia and the civil war. The source material used in this paper is mainly interviews. The interviewed persons are exiled Yugoslavs who were born between the years 1946-1960. Secondary source material is from literature. First hand literature used to examine Yugoslavia are: New Perspectives on Yugoslavia: Key issues and controversies edited by Dejan Djokic and James Ker-Lindsay, Balkan history: Yugoslavia rise and fall written by Sanimir Resic, Tito: Folkets diktator written by Björn Kumm. Method used in this paper is oral history. Through oral history, exiled Yugoslavs will tell how they experienced the former Yugoslavia. The survey showed that most exile Yugoslavs highlighted how good society, and their lives were back then in Yugoslavia. In addition, the study came to the conclusion that Yugoslavia contributes to nostalgia among exile Yugoslavians. Most of them travel back to their home country during their holidays to recharge both mentally and physically.

    Abstract [en]

Online social networks are a natural part of the lives of today’s western youth. Media and information literacy is a central part of research in Library and Information science and until now there has always been more focus on these subjects in a learning context rather than in an every day life context.

The aim of this study is to further examine how adolescent boys value and trust the information they receive via Twitter in their personal lives, and how this effects their view of their environment. The study was done with a qualitative method, where we conducted interviews with six boys who were all born in 1997. The results showed that they knew how to react critically to information on Twitter. Although none of the participants valued information on Twitter too seriously, they did feel that it kept them more updated than if they had not been using the social network.

    Abstract [en]

We can conclude that there are differences between the curriculum of primary and secondary school from year 1994 and 2011, current concepts of historical consciousness, gender and equality between men and women. Our paper describes the differences among the four curriculums focusing on the subject history. In our paper we have used an document analysis and our theory is based on curriculum theory. The result that we have presented demonstrate the development of the historical consciousness, it is more developed and divided which makes it more simplified to understand. The gender and equality perspective have various differences, but for the most part the equality perspective are well presented in the curriculum, and more developed in the 2011 curriculum. The curriculum from 1994 have similarities with the curriculum from year 2011 but the word gender is only presented once in the new curriculum for the secondary school from 2011. The result of this paper is that we found the gender concept relatively new, but the perspective is produced in the curriculums through other words like sexuality, female and male.

Savu: History and Oral Tradition on an Island of Indonesia2018Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The work combines anththropological fieldwork and archival research in order to study the historical trajectories of Savu, an island in the Indonesian province Nusa Tenggara Timur. Savunese society is marked by a tight genealogically defined social system which has been able to allocate scarce natural resources. The island, traditionally divided into five domains or princedoms, was included in the political network of the Dutch VOC in the 1640s. The Savunese had importance for the Dutch as providers of auxiliaries, and later as exporters of horses, textiles, etc. The book follows the vicissitudes of Savu over the colonial period, Japanese occupation, revolution, and the postcolonial era.

Vad är informationskompetens?: Lärares syn på informationskompetens i grundskolan2018Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate how teachers, at secondary schools, think about children’s information literacy. This is explored based on three questions:

    • What do teachers consider information literacy to be?

    • How do teachers work to develop student’s information literacy?

    • How do teachers view children’s information literacy?

The reason for this study sprung form the lack of former research in the area of teacher's view of information literacy. The reason why this is a problem is because students are viewed to benefit from a partnership between thelibrarians and teachers when learning information literacy. It’s also necessarythat children develop information skills to make sure that they can be a part of a democratic society. To answer these questions nine teachers are interviewed. The way these interviews were structured were in line with whatis written about “semi-structured interviews”. To analyze the results from the interviews performed, Christine Bruce’s “Seven faces of informationliteracy” is applied.

The results and analysis showed that teachers often view information literacy as the ability to search for information, evaluate it from a critical standpoint and handle digital tools. When it comes to how they explain these differentconcepts it’s often connected to a specific task. The teachers explain whatthey consider the students to know at this point in their life. A few times the teachers view on information literacy differs from Bruce, but for the most time Bruce categories of information literacy are still relevant despite the differences in context and time.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to found out about what is a good treatment in the university library and what librarians can do to make the user happy. The study focused on the meeting between the doctoral student’s and the library staff, about how the doctoral student’s wanted to be treated. The study was carried out thorough a series of four qualitative interviews with doctoral student’s. The result I analyzed from the qualitative interviewers with theories. The result of this study showed that often appreciated by the user of librarians are friendly, smiles, have eye contact during the meeting and show that they are really interested in helping the user and have patience. As a result, I worked out my own model on the parts that some of them I thought were important regarding a correct user response. Then in the analysis I explain the parts in more detail.

Stadsarkeologi, Förmedling och Skolan: Bortom historieämnets horisont2020Licentiatavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The title of this licentiate thesis is: Urban contract archaeology, public outreach and schools. Beyond the horizons of history teaching.

The aim of my licentiate thesis is to investigate how educational programs for schools are implemented within the framework of contract archaeology. I study the underlying incentives that motivate public outreach within contract archaeology, who carries out the outreach and what impact educational programs have on schools. My research project also aims to explore how public outreach within contract archaeology can be organized to meet schools´ demand for knowledge and activities. With an interdisciplinary approach, taken from archaeology and educational sciences, the goal is to instigate a dialogue between the scientific community and contract archaeology, as well as between contract archaeology and schools.

As a primary goal, midway into in my doctoral degree, I have chosen in this licentiate thesis to study the practices of public outreach on urban excavation sites in Sweden, specifically studying outreach practices towards schools.

The research queries in the licentiate thesis are:

    1. What are the purposes and objectives with public outreach in contract archaeology?
    2. What are the preconditions for working with public outreach in contract archaeology?
    3. How are the practices of public outreach aimed at schools conducted at urban excavation sites?
    4. How do educational programs within contract archaeology address the needs and goals of school education?

Based on these queries, I also discuss how contract archaeology in the future can make possible broader collaborations with schools. This serves as an introduction to how archaeo-didactics can evolve bringing together contract archaeology's goals and potential in an educational situation, with the needs and goals of school education.

    Abstract [en]

During the 19th and 20th century, Sweden saw a dramatic increase of illegitimate children. The phenomenon was not however equally distributed, as the frequency was much lower in the western parts of the country. In several doctoral thesis, the development has been explained with the advancing industrialization of the modern society. The primary aim of this study has been to test this thesis in Västbo district 1860-1939. The district, which is located in the heart of the south western parts of Sweden, had around the turn of the century 1900, several more or less industrialized towns, but was still strongly influenced by the surrounding agrarian parishes. As expected, the parishes with an established industry, tended to have a higher proportion of illegitimate births than those of agrarian character. Therefore, the same thesis that has been accepted on a national scale, can also be applied on a local scale, even within the region that represents a low proportion of illegitimate births. The study has also proven that the majority of the illegitimate children’s fathers were unknown, which often put the mother in a difficult economic and social situation. On the other hand, a bigger proportion of the fathers were identified from 1926, when each municipality was obliged to institute a child welfare committee. The main material of the study has been the birth books and the child welfare committees’ protocols.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the educational value of time travel role-play organized by Kalmar läns museum and how the method relates to the current curriculum Lgr11. This is done by examining the method using Gagné´s events of instruction and applying two theories represented by Vygotskij and Dewey. The material analyzed consists of two interviews in which respondents are familiar with the educational tool´s structure and the manuals written by Ebbe Westergren, first curator at the museum. The results show that depending on how the role-play is designed, it has the potential to serve as a teaching tool in history. This for its varied teaching technique and of it extent the method complies with Gagné´s nine points. In the final section of the analysis shows that the time travel role-play as a teaching method is compliant with the elements of Lgr11. Due to the amount of time that the method requires in order to reach its full potential, there is a debate on whether the time travel role-play takes much time away from other crucial content in the curriculum.

    Abstract [en]

The ever-evolving information technology gives users more opportunities, but also put higher demands on them. The digital agenda of the state and society clarifies the objectives and effects academic libraries’ development. E-books influence the development of organizational, economic, legal and political perspectives.

At the University Library in Gävle work is ongoing. The process is controlled by the acquisition policy which makes it clear that e-books should be purchased if possible. By offering e-books including textbooks it expands the availability for student demands. It is one of University Libraries fundamental tasks.

The curiosity about how this work is received by students is the purpose of this thesis and addresses the questions concerning what affects students' acceptance, perception, attitude and usage of e-books in studies at the University of Gävle?

Through an online questionnaire based on a theoretical foundation developed to be used in tests of new information technology, Technology Acceptance Model, students' perceptions of e-books is mapped. Important variables are perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use which influence the attitude, the intention to use and actual use.

The thesis concluded that students accept e-books as a supplement to printed books. The factor students’ value as most important is availability and that it is easy to find. The main goal of students' reading is to gain access to required literature of the course and perceived usefulness of e-books is primarily to its being available which affects studying and learning.

    Abstract [en]

Between craftsmanship and outsourcing - challenges in purchasing literature in languages other than Swedish and English at Swedish public libraries. This paper examines how ten librarians working in Swedish public libraries perceive challenges connected to the acquisition of books in languages other than Swedish and English. It makes an attempt to explain how these challenges affect the librarians’ acquisition process and push it towards either a craftsmanship based process or a process based on a high degree of outsourcing responsibility. The method used was qualitative interviews with librarians that had acquisition of books in languages other than Swedish or English as part of their work responsibilities. A total of eight interviews, two of them group interviews with two participants, were conducted. Five of the interviewed librarians worked in a large city, while five worked in three smaller municipalities. The analysis was inspired by Evans’ & Saponaro’s model of the collection development process and Brian Quinn’s use of George Ritzer’s theory of McDonaldization to examine the state of academic libraries in the U.S.A. Three main challenges are discussed; identifying user needs, absence of language or literature knowledge and poor availability of books. The interviewed librarians acquisition processes could be said to exist on a scale between a high degree of craftsmanship and a high degree of outsourcing. One factor pushing librarians towards an outsourcing of responsibility was absence of language knowledge, which lead to a higher degree of dependency on vendor assessment of literature. Mandatory purchasing agreements and lack of adequate technical and cataloging services inhouse were also factors affecting the acquisition process as they lead to less choice in vendor selection and as a consequence hindered the librarians’ ability to take on responsibility in selecting and acquiring books.

    Abstract [en]

Within the educational system you will experience students from different cultures, thus the question was asked: what are the expectations on you as a teacher when working with the students’ process of a positive identity view? The essay has examined how elementary school and the sami school work with identity in school and in history class. The investigation has been executed through Critical Doscourse Analysis (CDA) on the source material Syllabi and course plan for history subject for elementary school and sami school fråm 1994 and 2011, and syllabus for sami school from 1996. The results presented reveals a change in how the words identity and the sami people are assoicated with and how these concepts should be treated in the syllabi and the cours plans for history from 1994 and 2011. In the syllabi and course plan in history from 1994 identity is strongly associated with culture and cultural heritage and the sami perspective should be included as a part of the swedish and nordic perspective. The sami school has provided the teachers with a guidance in the history subject including how to teach in order to mediate a sami perspective. In the syllabus and course plan for history from 2011, the sami perspective is exkluded and instead the sami people are placed in a context of learning about “the others”. Identity is no longer strongly associated with culture in this syllabus, but instead the focus is directed towards language and historical narratives connected with identity development.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus?: A comparative study of Karl Marx, Slavoj Žižek and Alain Badiou’s reflections on revolution2015Studentarbete övrigt, 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This qualitative thesis analyses the development of Marxian thought on riots and revolution in the works of Slavoj Žižek and Alain Badiou. Due to the structural limitations of this essay, the research has been limited to a comparison between Karl Marx’s The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte and a selection of Žižek and Badiou’s works. Furthermore, the scope of the essay focuses on two material events; the coup d’état of Louis Bonaparte and the England riots of 2011. The comparison was concretised through the usage of Ludvig Beckman’s model for idea analysis and the method of ideal types. This study demonstrated how the modern theorists remain loyal to Marx’s basic analysis of society and concepts such as alienation and exploitation. However, the deterministic and eschatological aspects of Marx’s philosophy have been abandoned for a less ineluctable history, and resonate more towards the Hegelian notion of an open history. This study has also elucidated and cemented the vital importance of the material circumstances in a historical materialist study; moreover, it has revealed the necessity for the modern theorists to reinvent and radicalise a number of Marx’s original concepts for the modern world. Žižek and Badiou also contest Marx’s insistence on the requisite nature of violent revolution, and promote the politics of subtraction as an alternative.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to get a better understanding of why people turn to astrology in todays secularized Sweden. More specifically, the purpose of the study is to investigate whether astrology functions as a mean of self-fulfillment in the pursuit of a deep self. Petteri Pietikäinen's five aspects of the deep self were used as theory in the study to define the concept of the deep self. To conduct the study, qualitative semi-structured interviews were used. Eight astrologically interested individuals participated in individual interviews. The result shows that astrology plays a function in all aspects of a deep self. How and when the respondents turned to astrology looked different. With everything from divination, narrative about the past and as maps of the deep self.

MBD, DAMP, ADD and ADHD are all concepts that through history have been used as labels to explain people with concentration difficulties. The purpose of this essay is to illustrate how the school's view on pupils with concentration difficulties has changed over the years. In addition, it shows how the school's view of pupils with concentration difficulties has affected both the teaching, the role of the teachers and the students. In the 1950s, the concept of MBD was used. In the 1990s, the term DAMP was used and today children with concentration problems are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. In this essay I follow how perceptions of these difficulties has changed in line with the concept differences.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine whether the descriptions of Stalin's terror in history textbooks for high school changed from the 1950s until the 2010s. Since previous research shows that textbook content is influenced from different directions and that it dominates in teaching, therefore I want to find out what similarities and differences that exist in the textbooks. The survey is based on a qualitative approach because I want to have a profound picture of the descriptions of Stalin's terror. The results of the survey show that the number of casualties and the descriptions on the famine has changed over time. Furthermore, textbooks also found it difficult to distinguish between terror, politics and ideology. The analysis of the results linked to the theoretical bases, historical consciousness model and history didactic model. The analysis shows that the result always ends up in historical consciousness as the basis for reproducing change and continuity, but in some cases the result has also been connected with historical consciousness of identity formation. In the history didactic model, the result has fallen into the material history teaching subcategories, objective, purpose and classically purpose.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine how children's librarians work with younger children with language disorders. We want to explore how children's librarians can support and stimulate the language of the children's development and what difficulties they might find. Children with different types of disabilities is a prioritized group according to the Swedish library law but previous studies have shown that children's librarians express an uncertainty in the interactions with children with disabilities. We used qualitative interviews as a data collection method. Five children's librarians who participates in a project called Språklust have been interviewed. In that project the children's librarians work together with speech therapists. Säljö’s sociocultural theory has been used as a theoretical framework. According to Säljö’s concepts, this study shows that cooperation between the children's librarians and other professions helps the children's librarians to reach and work with the children. The children's librarians have an important role when it comes to inspire caregivers to read with their children and to encourage them to talk about the books. One of the difficulties is that the children's librarians are dependent on the speech therapists and it is of importance that the cooperation functions or else there is a risk the children with language disorders will not come to the libraries.

This article investigates how British officials and observers of the Malay Archipelago in the nineteenth century explained the prevalence of piracy in the region, particularly in terms of race and civilization. The writings by, among others, Thomas Stamford Raffles, John Crawfurd, James Brooke and Peter Benson Maxwell on contemporary Malay piracy are analysed. Whereas there was broad agreement among these observers that the alleged lack of civilization on the part of the Malays was a major reason for the prevalence of piracy in the region, there was considerable disagreement about the Malays’ capacity for civilizational progress and improvement. The degree to which the Malays were deemed capable of civilization in turn influenced the policies and measures implemented by the British to suppress piracy, ranging from the promotion of free trade to the wholesale extermination of entire villages and communities of suspected pirates. Criticism from humanitarians and liberals in London against the brutality of the latter tactics, however, led to a more restrained British deployment of violence in the Malay Archipelago from the middle of the nineteenth century.

Fredens och barmhärtighetens budbärare? [The harbingers of peace and mercy?]: Hugh Lenox Scott och den amerikanska arméns relationer med Oklahomas indianer under 1890-talet [Hugh Lenox Scott and US Army−Indian relations in Oklahoma in the 1890s]2019Ingår i: Historisk Tidskrift (S), ISSN 0345-469X, Vol. 139, nr 3, s. 455-481Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Three tense events involving the US Army and the Kiowa, Comanche and Apache nations in Oklahoma in the decades after the end of the Great Plains Wars seemed destined to end in violence: The Ghost Dance in 1890−91, the death of three Kiowa boys in a blizzard in 1891 and the transfer of Geronimo and around three hundred Chiricahua Apache Indians to Oklahoma in 1895. In all of these events a US Cavalry officer, Hugh Lenox Scott, played a key role as a soldier-diplomat. Through his linguistic skills and inter-cultural competence, Scott, assisted by Iseeo, a Kiowa army scout and close friend of Scott’s, managed to prevent the three situations from erupting in violence. These outcomes are in stark contrast to what happened around the same time in the Northern Plains, where violence erupted on several occasions, most conspicuously at Wounded Knee in December 1890, when US troops killed between 150 and 200 Lakota Indians. The purpose of this micro historical study is to highlight how the military, in concrete action, could promote peace and development in their dealings with American Indians and to explore the significance of personal relations, tolerance and trust for the maintenance of peace. These factors were crucial for the more peaceful development on the Southern Plains compared with in the north. In promoting peace, moreover, Scott not only acted as a diplomat in relation to the Indians; he also successfully advised his superior commanders not to send troops into the field in order to uphold order and quell any possible unrest. Such deployment of troops, Scott was convinced, was like putting a keg of gunpowder in front of an open fire and risked sparking uncontrolled and lethal violence between the soldiers and the Indians, to the detriment of the latter, as happened at Wounded Knee. Based on his long service as a soldier-diplomat, Scott later in life developed a general theory about the military as a peacemaking institution. According to Scott, it was politicians and the people who made war and the task of the military was to conquer the peace. His styling of the US soldier as the ”harbinger of peace and mercy”, however, depended on Scott ignoring the many instances when the US military had failed to maintain peace and order, both in relation to the American Indians and in colonies overseas.

Pirates and pearls: Jikiri and the challenge to maritime security and American sovereignty in the Sulu Archipelago, 1907–19092017Ingår i: International Journal of Maritime History, ISSN 0843-8714, E-ISSN 2052-7756, Vol. 29, nr 1, s. 44-67Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In 1908–1909, maritime commerce, fishing and traffic in the Sulu Archipelago in the southern Philippines almost came to a standstill due to a surge in piracy and coastal raids that challenged US colonial rule in the area. The leader of the outlaws was a renegade subject of the Sultan of Sulu, a Samal named Jikiri. Together with his followers, Jikiri was responsible for the murders of at least 40 people in numerous raids on small trading vessels, pearl fishers, coastal settlements and towns throughout the archipelago. In spite of the concerted efforts of the US Army, the Philippine Constabulary and private bounty hunters, Jikiri was able to avoid defeat for more than one and half years, before he was eventually killed in July 1909. His decision to take to piracy was triggered by the failure of the US authorities to pay compensation for the loss of the traditional claims that many families in the Sulu Archipelago had to the pearl beds of the region, as stipulated by a law on pearl fishing adopted in 1904. The law was in several respects disadvantageous to the native population of Sulu and this – together with the high-handed behaviour of the local officers in charge of the Sulu district from 1906 – fuelled widespread discontent with colonial rule and led several of the leading headmen of Sulu covertly to sympathize with, and protect, Jikiri and his followers. This sponsorship combined with the general reluctance of the population to cooperate with the US military explains why Jikiri was able to defy the vastly superior US forces for so long. American officers at the time tended to attribute the depredations to the allegedly piratical nature of the Sulus, but this article argues that the so-called 'decay theory', first proposed by Raffles a century earlier, is a more appropriate explanation of this surge in piracy.

Pirates of Empire: Colonisation and Maritime Violence in Southeast Asia2019Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The suppression of piracy and other forms of maritime violence was a keystone in the colonisation of Southeast Asia. Focusing on what was seen in the nineteenth century as the three most pirate-infested areas in the region - the Sulu Sea, the Strait of Malacca and Indochina - this comparative study in colonial history explores how piracy was defined, contested and used to resist or justify colonial expansion, particularly during the most intense phase of imperial expansion in Southeast Asia from c.1850 to c.1920. In doing so, it demonstrates that piratical activity continued to occur in many parts of Southeast Asia well beyond the mid-nineteenth century, when most existing studies of piracy in the region end their period of investigation. It also points to the changes over time in how piracy was conceptualised and dealt with by each of the major colonial powers in the region - Britain, France, the Netherlands, Spain and the United States.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to investigate how Shared Reading facilitators consider the method to function as a reader development strategy. What purpose does Shared Reading serve for the participants according to the facilitators? Does Shared Reading affect the participants’ interest in literature? What social functions does Shared Reading serve for the participants? How does the facilitator regard his/her own role in reader development? To answer these questions six facilitators have been interviewed, four of them with leading roles in projects with a purpose of spreading Shared Reading as a reader development strategy in Sweden. The results are analyzed using Louise M. Rosenblatt’s reception theory. The results show that Shared Reading influences the participants’ reading habits, that Shared Reading can have an important social function for individuals living in social exclusion and that there is an interest in working with the method from several organizations in Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

This paper explores how local saints were constructed in early medieval Scandinavia. Focussing on the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries, it specifically considers how four female saints fit into the new narratives which were created in the process of the Christianization of Scandinavian society. What made female Scandinavian saints unjque? How did they fit into the larger, over-arching Christian narrative? By studying the composition of new, unique liturgical texts, this study suggests that mythopoetic moments can instead be seen as movements. The textual co=unjties which authored these texts and their interconnectivity are thus related to the active and permanent establishment of emerging cults.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter explores perceptions of historical saintly travel and discusses whether travelling was to convey a precise ideology or to provide an interpretation of a historical situation, highlighting social and communal aspects of travel. It focuses on the groups of saints in terms of their being members of the laity or missionaries, these aspects were shown to have had a bearing only on the type of journey the saint undertook. The chapter aims to explore perceptions of travel in the past and its association with holiness by studying accounts of travel in the hagiographical texts that were composed for a selection of Danish and Swedish saints. Studying sources written for the cults of early local saints in Scandinavia can provide insights into previously neglected aspects of medieval history in the area. Several of the local Scandinavian lay saints are described as having undertaken important journeys during their lifetimes.

Åtvidabergs öde i Facits händer?
    Abstract [en]

At the end of the 1960s, the business community in the small town Åtvidaberg was dominated by the worldwide company Facit AB. Åtvidaberg was highly dependent on Facit AB, which made the municipality vulnerable in case something should happen. In 1970, the labor market situation was good in Åtvidaberg thanks to the Facit expansion but the situation would change rapidly during the following years due to the Facit crisis. In October 1972, the company was sold to Electrolux. In 1972, AB Åtvidabergs Industries was founded to prevent the crisis by attracting companies to Åtvidaberg. The aim of this thesis is to investigate how Åtvidaberg’s local press reflected the industrial community Åtvidaberg during the Facit crisis in 1972 and to investigate in what preventive measures took Åtvidaberg Industribyggen in order to meet the ongoing crisis. The full study examines a ten-year period, from 1972 to 1982.

The result shows that the local press reflects a troubled Åtvidaberg in 1972. The Facit crisis gets a lot of attention where many issues are raised in connection with the sale of Facit to Electrolux. However, the situation is still under control in Åtvidaberg who suffer little from the crisis. 1976 is the year when the second Facit crisis becomes apparent when problems grow for Facit as well as the labor market in Åtvidaberg Municipality. It is at this point Åtvidaberg Industries seriously starts to discuss measures to promote the local business community. I will also describe a didactic perspective where I discuss how I as a future teacher could work with archive material in history teaching which I have used in this paper, in the teaching of history.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose with this essay is to enlighten the comprehension of the school librarian’s perspective of his/ her function, mainly when it deals with assisting work with pupils who have reading disabilities and in which ways the school librarian should encourage the pupils. The thesis is based on two research questions. How does the school librarian define what a school library is and its obligations? How does the collaboration between the school-librarian and the teacher operate? In order to acquire answers for these questions I conducted a semi-structured interview with schoollibrarians working at public primary schools. As an empirical point of departure, I applied a theoretical reading-circle model by Aidan Chambers combinated with Kerstin Rydsjös och Anna-Carin Elfs three different ways of observing reading: Chambers’ model is based on six different phases and these are: To pick, to read, time, place, reaction and response and adult support. The result of my study brings about a great many different views linked to the school librarian's role, the most dominant part is about the school librarian’s most important task, and that is to guide pupils when it comes to picking out the most adequate books so they can start developing better skills in the reading stage.

Folkbibliotek och integration: Hur personliga relationer mellan användare och bibliotekspersonal bidrar till integration2020Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

There are more and more expectations of research that it will be able to "solve" society's problems. Library and Information Science (LIS) is also expected to contribute. One of the current topics that has been important in LIS research in recent years is integration.

For this reason, the aim of this thesis in Library and Information Science is to examine the role of library staff in strengthening the integration process for the target group of adult immigrants. The emphasis is on how relationships are created at interactions in public libraries and how libraries are used as an arena for integration. The theoretical framework is based in the integration model by Ager and Strang, their ten core domains of integration process, and Social Capital’s theory. The method used is qualitative interviews with 7 library staff members in seven public libraries in small to medium-sized cities in Sweden. The interviews were recorded, except one which was conducted via e-mail, and the content was analyzed using a thematic content analysis through the theoretical framework.

The result of this study show the kind of interactions that occur which can affect society and the individual’s level of social inclusion. The result support the assertion that public libraries have an important role to play in strengthening the integration of immigrant groups into society. The thesis show that library staff are a strong resource when it comes to achieving social interactions, and that the relationships created at public libraries helps support integration.

    Abstract [en]

This essay provides a study of the plans for the spaces that is used to integrate newly arrived immigrants that occurs within the society of Kalmar. A qualitative analysis consisting of two official documents provided by the local authorities of Kalmar have been used, to examine what kind of strategy the local government use, when it comes to creating space to host and integrate newly arrived immigrants to the local society. Recent researches in the field of human geography and immigrants have shown that previously focus has been with the immigrants travel and what occurs at the borders. Recently the focus has shifted towards what happens on a regional scale when the immigrants settle down. This study provides results that show the desired spaces are constructed as places for integration both in action and in thought. Although many of the spaces that are constructed are with the intention to both integrate the new immigrants and create a multicultural society that benefits from the many cultures that flourish in it. The focus is not only on integration but also on a perspective of growth to be able to use the immigrants as work resources. And by doing so, the local government assure not only an integrated city but also makes the immigrants fill the gap in an economic and growth perspective. Conclusions that are drawn from this study shows that most spaces that is planned to be created will indeed help to bring different groups closer and bond to each other, but some of the plans may backfire and create segregation instead of integration.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to find the virtue ethics John Bunyan presents in Pilgrim´s Progress part 1, compared with the virtues Max Weber presents, and then try Weber´s theory on the empirical data, Pilgrim´s Progress. When I compare the virtues in Weber´s theory with the virtues in Pilgrim´s Progress, I interpret Weber´s theory as limited. From Weber´s theory emerges the puritan virtues: fulfillment of duty, struggle, self-control and live simply. He also mentions gratitude to God and helpfulness to other people, but this is shown through work in the society. These virtues can also be found in Pilgrim´s Progress. The fulfillment of duty in Weber´s theory is mainly focused on work-ethic, while I interpret the fulfillment of duty in Pilgrim´s Progress more focused on the struggle with the Belief in God. The virtues self-control and to live simply is clearly seen in both sources, which strengthens this part of Weber´s theory. The most interesting thing is that I found several virtues in Pilgrim´s Progress, which Weber did not attributed any significant. These are: forgiveness, help, spiritual communion, and gratitude to God.

Kalmars turismprofilering ur ett tidsperspektiv: En komparativ studie mellan två historiska platser2015Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The world has become a globalized place in constant development and much of which is now taken for granted did not even exist 30-40 years ago, such as smartphones or Internet in common households. As new tourist destinations is continuously being created, it becomes increasingly important with effective place marketing to compete in the global market. Developing a good and interesting profile is thus a way for places to become more attractive for tourists. The main theory in the paper is "post-industrialization and the entrepreneurial city" which describes how cities in the global north have moved away from industry towards becoming post-industrial cities – very often with a strong focus on tourism. A review of previous research in tourism, marketing, profiling, image and branding of places have been made, whereupon a knowledge gap has been identified regarding studies concerning comparison of how the structure of places and arguably also the profiling of places has changed over time. The aim of this paper is therefore to examine how the Swedish city of Kalmar's profiling and geographical space has changed from 1972-82 compared to 2010-14. In order to do so, interviews have been conducted and written material have been analysed. The result demonstrates inter alia that Kalmar, like many other post-industrial cities, has gone from being an industrial city to a place of tourism.

Digital Maritime Sights: Digital visual documentation and communication in Scandinavian contract maritime archaeology2018Licentiatavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This licentiate thesis investigates the use of digital visualisations for knowledge production and communication of maritime heritage located underwater. The archaeological practice that takes place in response to development, contract archaeology, is the field that is being investigated.

Much of the practical and administrative aspects of contract maritime work involves the survey, excavation and interpretation of archaeological remains. In addition, shifts in heritage policy emphasise that the results of this work move beyond their own value to provide access and democratic participation to heritage and be of benefit to society (e.g. Faro Convention, 2005).

Since the inaccessibility of maritime archaeology underwater makes outreach especially challenging, digital, and in particular 3D, technologies have been recognised as having great potential to meet the needs of both maritime archaeological researchers and public audiences. Advances in methodologies for digitally documenting and visualising archaeological sites, both on land and underwater, are providing a range of innovative and multidisciplinary solutions for both archaeological analysis and outreach activities.

The aim of this research is to understand current uses of digital visualisation for knowledge production and communication of maritime archaeology located underwater, in order to identify knowledge gaps that would benefit from future research. This aim is met through a study drawn primarily from the fields of digital archaeology, maritime archaeology and heritage studies, as well as discourse and thematic analysis of the factors that influence the use of these technologies in the sector. The case study is the contract maritime archaeology sector in Scandinavia, with a primary focus on the practice in Sweden and also including perspectives from the Danish and Norwegian sectors.

The results show that an emphasis on efficiency within the contract sector shapes the understanding and use of digital technologies, in some instances limiting their potential for archaeological interpretation and communication. While the maritime sector was found to be partly defined and restricted by a distinct identity, at times operating independently from mainstream archaeology, it was also found to be open to innovation. This represents great potential for digital workflows aimed at enhancing both interpretation and communication to be applied to the maritime archaeological sector in the future.

By the qualitative interview method, the study showsthat the two boys want to be integrated and not assimilated. I have also come toconclusion that positive factors for the acculturation for adaption in the Swedish societyis language, residential area, social support and that the boys didn ́t feel discriminated inSweden. This study shows that the biggest negative impact on motivation to adapt to theSwedish society is not to be given a permanent residence.

This study investigates in what respects Celtic mythology influenced J. R. R. Tolkien when writing the sagas incorporated in the mythopoeic compilation of The Silmarillion. Through narrative and comparative analysis, stories from the Irish prose collection Lebor Gabála Érenn, as well as the Welsh medieval manuscript Mabinogion, are collated to the tales of The Silmarillion in order to illuminate possible influences. The survey showed that even though Tolkien expressed a certain distaste for everything Celtic, several elements of Irish and Welsh mythology are indeed visible in his works.

    Abstract [en]

Swedish public libraries offer different kinds of digital help for their users. Sometimes by ”digital drop in” or ”smartphone courses”, and sometimes spontaneously at the reference desk. This study investigates librarians’ experience of helping users with non-traditiontal library questions, for example: banking issues and smartphone problems. Four librarians were interviewed and a phenomengraphical theoretical approach was taken. In the beginning of the interviews the informants was asked to define what digital questions are for them which resulted in a broad definition that included for example: Youtube, copying, e-mail, e-books, wifi, virtual reality and information seeking. The interviews were transcribed and then categorized in four themes that was especially prominent: definition of digital questions, what should the library help with, librarians competence for digital questions and digital help at the library related to the democracy mission. Because of the phenomengraphical approach the study focused on the librarians experience of digital questions as a phenomenon rather than on describing the digital activities the libraries offers itself. The result showed, among other things, that the librarians in this study experience digital help at libraries as an important task and describes it as relevant for the libraries mission of prevent digital alienation. The informants also problematize banking issues as a phenomenon at libraries in the light of legal and ethical dilemmas.

    Abstract [en]

This essay was to investigate what self-image public libraries convey on Facebook and what image is received by the users, along with comparison of those. It was investigated if the received image corresponded with the users’ previous image of public libraries. The method used was interviews with the Facebook administrators and surveys with the users. The theoretical framework was Kotler’s model for image creation. The research is mainly American and shows Facebook as an accepted marketing tool for libraries among students, but as not taken seriously by the library staff. Also the Swedish studies show that Facebook is used for marketing. They show there are no policies for working with Facebook image and that the process is randomized. The results of the interviews show that the main purpose for the libraries’ participating on Facebook is marketing and conveying a positive library image, although there are no specific guidelines. The results of the surveys show that the majority has a positive view of the pages. The negative image is due to a lack of correlation between the recipients’ earlier image of libraries and the mediated image. The receivers believed that the pages were created for marketing. The analysis of the results showed that the libraries that used Kotler's model for image creation got more positive response among users than those who did not. The most important factor in library image creation on Facebook is how well it reflects reality and how well the image corresponds with the recipients' perception of reality.

    Abstract [en]

There is a growing interest among libraries for using assistance of dogs in reading training for children. Many Swedish school libraries and public libraries are already today using this kind of pedagogy. From study results we can see that humans feel relaxed and calm together with kind animals. This affects humans physically and psychologically in different ways for example; lowering the blood pressure and set off calming hormones oxytocin. As we all know that reading out loud can be a very stressful situation so taking assistance of a reading dog or an assisting dog can be very helpful.

Designed as a qualitative interview study, by interviewing project leaders, school and children’s librarians working with this kind of reading activity, this study examines the questions: how is reading stimulation using reading dogs depicted in practice? How does the projects and how function and how does the Project’s librarians experience this kind of pedagogy? Finally how do reading dogs affect reading activities in the school libraries and public libraries looking through the sociocultural view and the literacy concept?

The interviews made in this study suggest that research in the field is needed and financial help is crucial for them to survive so the ongoing or finished projects with assistance or reading dogs can continue in the future. Though the positive results from trying the method gave a wanting for a continuation but sometimes there is no clear plan how to proceed. The guidance from research and financial help could make a huge difference for the librarians working with this pedagogy.

Biblioterapi i praktiken: En undersökning vid Växjö lasarett2017Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines how a hospital chaplain, a children therapist, the therapy group Children in grief and a hospital teacher use words in their activities with mourning children and adults. The aim of this study was to learn more about bibliotherapy, how words can assist in diminish the distress of being in a very stressful situation such as grief and sickness. Beneficial to the whole community, bibliography can also be used by libraries as a preventive tool to promote mental health. The research questions studied were: What do you think about bibliotherapy and do you consider bibliotherapy as a part of your work in your clinic? How do you use texts in your activities? How do you select suitable literature for your clients? The focus was not upon which literature used. To examine these questions semi-structured interviews were conducted. The interviews took place at Växjö Hospital during March 2017. Through the interviews the answers have been showing the forms of activities used to soothe the suffering for children and adults, and how important the reading is as a complement to their other therapies. None of the interviewees used the term bibliotherapy, but the study shows that they all use bibliotherapy in different forms: creative bibliotherapy, informal bibliotherapy and clinical bibliotherapy.

Världen hälsar på: Rasrepresentationer i Svenska familj-journalen 1864-18812015Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
