Subjects, Citizens and Law: Colonial and independent India2017Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This volume investigates how, where and when subjects and citizens come into being, assert themselves and exercise subjecthood or citizenship in the formation of modern India. It argues for the importance of understanding legal practice – how rights are performed in dispute and negotiation – from the parliament and courts to street corners and field sites. The essays in the book explore themes such as land law and rights, court procedure, freedom of speech, sex workers’ mobilisation, refugee status, adivasi people and non-state actors, and bring together studies from across north India, spanning from early colonial to contemporary times.

Representing scholarship in history, anthropology and political science that draws on wide-ranging field and archival research, the volume will immensely benefit scholars, students and researchers of development, history, political science, sociology, anthropology, law and public policy.

At nature’s edge: the global present and long-term history2018Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In an epoch when environmental issues make the headlines, this is a work that goes beyond the everyday. Ecologies as diverse as the Himalayas and the Indian Ocean coast, the Negev desert and the former military bases of Vietnam, or the Namib desert and the east African savannah all have in common a long-time human presence and the many ways people have modified nature. With research covering countries from Asia, Africa, and Australia, the authors come together to ask how and why human impacts on nature have grown in scale and pace from a long pre-history.

The chapters in this volume illumine specific patterns and responses across time, going beyond an overt centring of the European experience. The tapestry of life and the human reshaping of environments evoke both concern and hope, making it vital to understand when, why, and how we came to this particular turn in the road. Eschewing easy labels and questioning eurocentrism in today's climate vocabulary, this is a volume that will stimulate rethinking among scholars and citizens alike.

Ecological Nationalisms: Nature, Livelihoods, and Identities in South Asia2014Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The works presented in this collection take environmental scholarship in South Asia into novel territory by exploring how questions of national identity become entangled with environmental concerns in Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and India. The essays provide insight into the motivations of colonial and national governments in controlling or managing nature, and bring into fresh perspective the different kinds of regional political conflicts that invoke nationalist sentiment through claims on nature. In doing all this, the volume also offers new ways to think about nationalism and, more specifically, nationalism in South Asia from the vantage point of interdisciplinary environmental studies. The contributors to this innovative volume show that manifestations of nationalism have long and complex histories in South Asia. Terrestrial entities, imagined in terms of dense ecological networks of relationships, have often been the space or reference point for national aspirations, as shared memories of Mother Nature or appropriated economic, political, and religious geographies. In recent times, different groups in South Asia have claimed and appropriated ancient landscapes and territories for the purpose of locating and justifying a specific and utopian version of nation by linking its origin to their nature-mediated attachments to these landscapes. The topics covered include forests, agriculture, marine fisheries, parks, sacred landscapes, property rights, trade, and economic development. Gunnel Cederlof is associate professor of history, Uppsala University, Sweden. K. Sivaramakrishnan is professor of anthropology and international studies and director of the South Asia Center, Jackson School of International Studies, at the University of Washington. The other contributors are Nina Bhatt, Vinita Damodaran, Claude A. Garcia, Urs Geiser, Goetz Hoeppe, Bengt G. Karlsson, Antje Linkenbach, Wolfgang Mey, Kathleen D. Morrison, J. P. Pascal, and Sarah Southwold-Llewellyn.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The majority of Sweden's population has access to the Internet and are frequent users of social media. Social media do not only meet people's needs to network, but can also play a role when it comes to their information needs. The library users are on social media, so therefore it is natural for libraries to also be there. Because young people of today grow up in a digital media world, we thought it would be interesting to examine how school libraries make use of these media. The purpose of this paper is to examine high school librarians’ use of social media. We connected four research questions; why does the librarian use social media, how can the librarian use social media in their professional, how can the use of social media contribute to the librarian's skills and how does librarians communicate via social media. We used qualitative interviews as our method to answer our questions. The theoretical framework was based on Jochumsen, Hvenegaard & Skot-Hansen's "The four space" model, which regards the library as a meeting space, inspiration space, learning space and performative space. It is in the original directed at the public library, but in our application it has been adapted for the school library operations and focused on the digital part of the school library. We found that librarians use social media mainly to promote their libraries. They also use social media to keep up on current research and to keep in touch with other librarians. They all find it desirable to have more contact with their users and a greater use of two-way communication.

"Hemska Sven": En studie av tv-serien Fröken Frimans krigs skildring av Svenska Hem och kvinnans position i Sverige under början av 1900-talet2018Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (yrkesexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to do a qualitative analysis of the swedish television drama Fröken Frimans krig. The story is focused around a group of women that starts a cooperation with the goal of providing women from all layers of the society with affordable and fresh groceries free from contamination that could diseases like tuberculosis and cholera. The goal of the analysis is to investigate the way historical surrounding circumstances and the obstacles for swedish women in the beginning of the 20th century are portrayed in the drama. The theoretical basis of the study is based on the way in which the creator uses history and to what extent the content is historically accurate according to conventional facts.

The results of the analysis showed that the drama was mostly historically accurate but that during certain scenes deviations were made from the accuracy, for example an epithet used in the drama concerning the name of the cooperation was mentioned 25 years before it appears in history. The analysis also showed that one of the biggest obstacles for women to achieve social equality was the class structures which divided women into firmly established categories in society. For example a lower class woman was offered the position as manager of the cooperations first store but she firmly and clearly declines the offer as a result of her awareness of the current class structures in swedish society.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this qualitative research study has been to investigate seven young adult Pentecostals conceptions about religious evil, that is Satan, demons and hell. The purpose has also been to analyze how these conceptualizations are formed. The method that has been used in this study is individual semi-structured interviews. The result of the study show that conceptions of Satan, demons and hell are strong in most of the individuals’ life but one. Berger & Luckmanns theories of socialization has been applied to the results and the discussion shows that conceptions about religious evil are formed in the primary socialization or the secondary socialization if the person goes through the process of alternation. Bultmanns argument that modern man can’t accept the world view that is presented in The New Testament has also been discussed and the discussion reveals that modern day people can believe in the New Testament worldview.

Feeling like at home in airports: experiences, memories and affects of placeness among Third Culture Kids2018Ingår i: Applied Mobilities, ISSN 2380-0127, s. 1-16Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

When analysed as network places for the mobility of subjects and objects, many descriptions refer to airports as placeless and meaningless spaces carrying no singular identity to themselves and to their users. This imagery does not necessarily fit with those people whose experiences are intrinsically linked to mobility as a recurrent early life style and as a part of their subjective identity. Drawing on affect theory this paper portrays an alternative picture of airports as meaningful places through the narratives made by a particular community of onward/multiple migrants, adult “Third Culture Kids”, associated with the experiences and memories of transiting in airports. By doing it, this article aims to add another dimension to mobilities that regards people’s affections and experiences ascribed to places of mobility.

Heritage on the move: Cross-cultural heritage as a response to globalisation, mobilities and multiple migrations2017Ingår i: International Journal of Heritage Studies (IJHS), ISSN 1352-7258, E-ISSN 1470-3610, Vol. 23, nr 10, s. 913-927Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Globalisation is creating new perceptions of social and cultural spaces as well as complex and diverse pictures of migration flows. This leads to changes in expressions of culture, identity, and belonging and thus the role of heritage today. I argue that common or dominant notions of heritage cannot accommodate these new cultural identities-in-flux created by and acting in a transplanetary networked and culturally deterritorialized world. To support my arguments, I will introduce ‘Third Culture Kids’ or ‘global nomads’, defined as a particular type of migrant community whose cultural identities are characterised high patterns of global mobility during childhood. My research focus on the uses and meaning of cultural heritage among this onward migrant community, and it reveals that these global nomads both use common forms of heritage as a cultural capital to crisscross cultures, and designate places of mobility, like airports, to recall collective memories as people on the move. These results pose additional questions to the traditional use of heritage, and suggest others visions of heritage today, as people’s cultural identities turn to be now more characterised by mobility, cultural flux, and belonging to horizontal networks.

The politics of human remains in managing archaeological medieval Jewish burial grounds in Europe2014Ingår i: Nordisk kulturpolitisk tidskrift, ISSN 1403-3216, E-ISSN 2000-8325, Vol. 17, nr 2, s. 168-186Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The archaeology of Jewish Medieval burial grounds has been a matter of dispute over the non-disturbance of Jewish human remains by Ultraorthodox Jewish groups. They call for the application of the Halakha, the Jewish religious law, claiming that those graves are of people of Jewish faith. The topic of non-disturbance of human remains by archaeologists may echoes the disputes, claims, and arguments defended by indigenous communities. But I will argue here that the two cases show little resemblance since neither are Jewish people uniquely indigenous in the European context, nor do religious laws govern the management of medieval heritage in Europe. Accordingly, the topic under discussion has little relation to religious claims to ancient heritage nor to the ethics of archaeological practice in relation to human remains, but to the politics of archaeological practice in the contemporary multireligious world. The article seeks to provide a full picture of discussion on the issue of the management of ancient burial grounds in Europe, raising sensitive issues regarding particular religious communities. Here the recommendation given by the Faro Convention will be introduced, but also its limitations discussed when mediating with particular communities and their religious agendas.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this research is primarily to examine and explore how imperialism/colonialism is depicted in teaching material from 1929 through to the present day and the changes which may or may not have occurred. This research’s point of departure is postcolonial theory and Edward Said’s harrowing critique of other cultures inaccurate representations in literature; reinforced with the West’s tendencies to portray the East as culturally and intellectually inferior. Previous research has indicated that Western perspectives still dominate textbooks and even suggests that old prejudices are alive and well. This investigation has even a dual-purpose, that is, to determine if the teaching aids meet the requirements of a good textbook, as stipulated by didactic researcher Tom Wikman. Wikman has devised principles to interpret the quality of a textbook which will thus be applied as analytical tools in conjunction with this research. The results of this study reveal, in correlation with previous research that Western perceptions of other cultures are still an issue in modern teaching aids. Despite the exception of one textbook’s attempt to incorporate a more sympathetic viewpoint, a rigid dichotomy between ‘us’ and ‘them’ is nonetheless upheld in the texts. Furthermore, the results allude to that outdated ethnocentric tendencies are seemingly ubiquitous in recent teaching materials, whether the authors are conscious or unconscious of this. To conclude, based on Wikman’s interpretation principles none of the teaching aids fulfil all the requirements of a good textbook.

    Abstract [en]

The transatlantic slave trade started in the 17th century and lasted for more than two hundred years, and many nations across the world abolished the slave trade during the 19th century. As slavery became a rather controversial topic, it led to hectic debates about the moral aspects of buying and selling human beings. During the 19th century in North America, newspapers were used to influence people and make them aware of the contemporary slave trade. Ideas and thoughts about the slave trade were conveyed to the public through newspapers, which became important and widely used media phenomena. Newspapers have always been used to convey different kinds of information, and as slavery was a much-disputed topic, the newspapers frequently wrote about it. This study aims to give an analysis of how three 18th century Swedish newspapers – Folkets röst, Jönköpingsbladet and Post- och inrikes tidningar – depicted the slave trade and slavery in general, between 1840 and 1860. In each newspaper, 15 news articles were analysed. The results show that the number of news articles where slavery was depicted in a negative context in Folkets röst and Post- och inrikestidningar, the results were approximately the same. As for Jönköpingsbladet, slavery was depicted in primarily neutral contexts. Neither of the newspapers depicted slavery positively.

    Abstract [en]

Research shows that almost 30 per cent men and 20 per cent women at the age of 16-24 in Sweden download music on a regular basis instead of buying records. Thanks to modern technologies teenagers of today have become used to downloading music illegally from theInternet. Even though legal alternatives, such as Spotify, have become popular, the behavior of illegal download of music still persists. What do record companies do to prevent this phenomenon and why do they go to such length to stop this widespread movement? The question is, why is illegal download of music a problem – and for whom? To investigate this I’ve read books about the subject, analyzed web pages of alternative record companies and interviewed a drummer in a local band. As a conclusion I discuss the pros and cons of free download of music in Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to look into what qualifications required necessary to a collaboration between the school library and the afterschool recreational center. The research questions are: 1) What is the position regarding school librarians to collaboration between the school library and the afterschool recreational center? 2) What qualifications are required of school librarians, according to themselves, in order to collaborate with recreational teachers? 3) How can school librarians view on collaboration and need of competence relate to the Afterscool Recreational Center with the support of the TLC- model? The method used is qualitative research interviews with six school librarians. The interviews took place at their place of work. The theoretical framework for the study have been Montiell-Overalls Theory on collaboration between school librarians and teachers, TLC.

The outcome of the interviews shows that in collaboration and competences, as requested in research issues, is of importance of how the principal and school management organizes the work at the schools and it plays a major role in the ability to collaborate. It also shows that school librarians are positive of collaboration but the school's organization is one reason why it is difficult to find time to collaborate. The outcome also shows that the activities of the school library are important for collaboration. Connections between the School Library and the Afterschool Recreational Center lies in the difference and the similarities between them. The qualifications school librarians believe they have can also be used during recreational time. Their functions in their pedagogical work are meant to operate enriching for the students’ progress growth.  Further research within the area is to look into what priorities the school management think is the school libraries assignment towards the after school recreational center and what result the students will get with that pedagogical method that TLC is.

I rösebyggares land: en studie av Misterhults bronsålder2014Licentiatavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

In this work, I have mainly aimed to show how the results of previous field surveysin Misterhult parish, Småland province, Sweden have influenced past andcurrent research. Targeted surveys may in fact still change the picture radically. Our state of knowledge may also change through reviews of previous fieldworkand new excavations targeted at knowledge gaps. I have discussed Misterhult’sBronze Age and problems in that field. I have emphasised our current state ofknowledge and made a call for further fieldwork in the area. There is still muchto be done, and this study pinpoints what, in order to approach an answer towhat attracted people to the area 3000 years ago. Misterhult is one of NorthernEurope’s most extensive and best preserved Bronze Age settled landscapes, andconditions for research are good.In addition to surveys and the spatial site distribution, my focus has been on theunderlying economy, i.e. the economy behind the burial-cairn environments. Ihave tried to show that the economy was crucial to the design and ritualisationof those environments.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

For decades, memory institutions such as libraries and archives have been engaged in digitizing cultural heritage materials in their holdings (also in the form of large private-public partnerships such as Google Books). The collections usually take on the form of image reproductions (scans, digital photographs), text transcriptions (OCR’d or manually keyed) and varying degrees and types of metadata (usually legal and rudimentary bibliographic metadata). Although there are signs that public funding for large-scale digitization is decreasing in the US and many European countries, significant resources are still being invested in digitization. A whole range of humanities research depends on having these digitized collections available. Further, in humanities research such as digital scholarly editing, digital reproductions produced by memory institutions are not only referred to but incorporated as building blocks in the editions themselves. In such cases, they are not only used as mere illustrations accompanying a scholarly text transcription, but can also serve as research tools and as instruments for accountability and accessibility. Nevertheless, the critical inquiry of scholarly editors is directed towards text transcriptions, whereas digital images are often uncritically taken at face value, as objective representations of the source documents. There seems to be room for an increased critical understanding of such images as interpretations based on scholarly informed deliberation, or a ’document criticism’ for digital image reproductions in the manner of how textual criticism has been established since centuries to establish the history, relation and provenance of texts and their versions. Partly, this face value approach is fostered by mass digitization, with projects such as Google Books as a paradigm, where there is little room for scholarly considerations during the image capture. As a result, image capture is portrayed as a fairly trivial and straightforward task that can be more or less automated. But there are in fact many types and levels of library digitization, suggesting a map of variety with mass digitization in one corner and what has been termed critical or slow  digitization in the other. The choices made in terms of preferred processes have been shown to matter to the way memory institutions such as museums, archives and libraries are conceived of (Dahlström, Hansson and Kjellman 2012).

A relatively small amount of research has explored the accuracy, usability and reusability of these digital representations to humanities scholars, the kind of research questions they open up for, and what degree of authenticity and trust we are able to ascribe to them. This paper explores the needs and potentials of such keys, instruments with which users can “investigate the road that documents have travelled”, to use the phrase from the CFP for this conference. What pieces of information (if any) do the digitizing institutions provide for users to ascertain the link between the digital representation on screen and the physical source document it purports to represent? The paper will:

    • address some of the critical considerations libraries and archives face when digitizing their holdings of text-based materials, with significant bearing on the value and (re)usability of the digital reproductions when placed within a scholarly context
    • discuss if and how scholarly inquiry is hindered by the way digitized collections are selected, formatted, made available and presented
    • discuss crucial concepts to understand the relation between digital image reproductions and represented sources, and
    • propose research avenues for exploring these concepts and questions in depth.

Key concepts discussed in the paper are:

    • mass/speedy digitization versus critical/slow digitization and their un/critical management of digital reproductions
    • relation between source and reproduction:
      • linearity
      • historical provenance (to a single object, to several objects, or to a series of historical anchor points) and the variety of potential trajectories
    • authenticity, faithfulness and exhaustiveness of digital reproductions vis-à-vis sources
    • transparency and keys:
      • metadata and paradata (paradata concerns the processes of collecting, digitizing and curating the materials)

The digital image reproduction invokes the virtual presence of the source, so the bond between reproduction and source is not only graphical and material but is also defined by a retrospective relationship between two points in history, the then and the now. A heightened awareness of this on the basis of a dedicated image criticism could serve as an incentive for digitizing institutions to increase the transparency of the production history of such images and to subject their degree of authenticity and (un)certainty to better scrutiny. Exhaustive paradata and metadata for the images, for instance, might be of paramount importance, providing information about states, production history, and digital provenance. What is missing for many current reproductions in digitized collections is the historical-bibliographical link between, on the one hand, what we see on the screen and, on the other, a particular identified artefact in a physical collection. In other words, which document was actually used when producing a given digital reproduction?

    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to investigate how three public libraries are working and perceive their role located in a municipality with a Sami population. The Sami population is one of Sweden's five minorities and a recognized indigenous people which gives them certain rights according to the minority law. Qualitative interviews are used as a method to gain a deeper understanding of how librarians and Sami coordinator discusses their work with the Sami people. The theoretical framework was based on Jochumsen, Hvenegaard Rasmussen and Skot-Hansen's "The four space" model (2012), which describe the library as a meeting space, inspiration space, learning space and performative space. The analysis shows that three of the four spaces, based on theoretical framework was dominant, and that was learning space, inspiration space and meeting space on the concept of the librarian and Sami coordinators view of the library as a public space.Respondents view the library as a public space where the Sami culture can be seen in cooperation with the Sami coordinator. Librarians highlights a couple obstacles in their work with the Sami people, and that was: lack of resources, language skills, no demand for library resources and geographical distances.

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines how three big Swedish newspapers depicts e-sports and computer gaming and how the depiction change during 2000-2013. The study will also examine whether e-sports is being portrayed as competitive sport. The purpose is to investigate which attitudes that can be identified towards computer gaming and its culture in major newspapers such as Aftonbladet, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet and how these attitudes eventually changed over time.

The sources that will be used in both the quantitative and qualitative analysis are based on web articles, mainly because the paper editions does not provide much, if any, information about computer gaming and e-sports and also because of the convenience of being able to quickly find articles to study.

Results indicate that computer gaming is being depicted in a clear negative fashion during 2000-2006, and that the depiction of e-sports is somewhat positive but not as glorifying as for the years 2007-2013. During this period, there is a apparent tendency of e-sports being introduced to readers who are unfamiliar with the gaming culture. As for the attitudes towards computer gaming, the depiction is still somewhat negative, mainly because the debate about computer games and violence was revived because of several acts of violence in shape of school massacres and mass murder. Finally, there are only partial results that indicate that e-sports is being portrayed as a competitive sport, based on Allen Guttman's criteria for competitive sports.

    Abstract [en]

Since reading difficulties is a growing problem in Society and a problem that hinders Children to take an active part in every day life, I wanted to investigate how the School Library can be an educational resource for students with reading difficulties. Using qualitative interviews, I have gained insight into how three school librarians and two teachers work with Students with reading difficulties at two different Schools. The Respondents feel that they have the Knowledge necessary to work with students with reading difficulties, but Wish they had more Resources in terms of Time and Staff to help Students achieve School Goals even better. There are always new assistive technology for Students with Reading Difficulties, and an important part of the Educational work of the School Library, is to be informed of the Facilities available and how they work. I show, in my Research the importance of cooperation between school libraries and teachers to provide the students with reading difficulties the love of reading and work to promote reading. It is important that the School Librarian is an integral part of the School's Team to take full advantage of every opportunity to help the Reading Impaired Students with Information and finding the right Reading Level. Other important aspects that I see as very important to help the Reading Impaired Students in their Reading Development, is that they are given a lot of time and a Peaceful and Stimulating Environment to read and learn in.

    Abstract [sv]

    Nyckelord: undervisningsstrategier, halvstrukturerade intervjuer, historiedidaktik.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate what ideas there are about the future role of the public libraries in society, what challenges the public libraries may face and how the public libraries will continue to be a place to meet. The future of the public libraries has been, and still is, a discussed topic and many believe that public libraries have an obvious place in society. The thesis focuses on library plans from the ten largest municipalities in Sweden. The theory used to analyze the source material in the study is The Four Space Model made by Henrik Jochumsen, Casper Hvenegaard Rasmussen and Dorte Skot‐Hansen. This model consists of four “spaces”, learning, meeting, inspiration and performative space that represents different aspects of how to manage a library, these spaces were more or less represented in the library plans. The results of the thesis showed that the library is a popular meeting place and that the public library has an important role, as an institution, to play in the society. Results also showed that cooperation between the libraries in the same municipality, but also cooperation with public libraries in other municipalities is important for the future.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor´s thesis analyzes the video game Red Dead Redemption and the historical use of the environment and atmosphere in the game. The theory and method used is media research and social memory studies. Two questions were asked: how does Red Dead Redemeption convey and produce the historical environment and the historical atmosphere. Furthermore subqueries/criterias were used to help answer the main questions.

The analysis was divided into two parts, the first part we analyze and discuss the games historical environment and the second part analyzes and discusses the historical atmosphere of the game.

The conclusion is that both the historical environment and the historical atmosphere is present in the game through picture and sound, the text only works as a guide. The picture and sound live in a symbiotic relationship and depend on each other to fully immerse the player to the game. The social memory is also highly present due to it being inspired by movies such as The good the bad and the ugly and For a fistful of dollars.

In Dialogue: Tradition and Interaction in the Mesolithic-Neolithic Transition2016Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This book developed from discussions following the 2012 In Dialogue: Tradition and Interaction in the Mesolithic–Neolithic Transition conference held in Manchester, UK. This conference provided a forum to compare not only the processes through which material innovations were adopted and elaborated during the Early Neolithic, but also the ways in which these processes have been understood and represented within the respective archaeological research traditions. The book examines the developments that followed the introduction of farming into Britain and Southern Scandinavia (Denmark and Southern Sweden). Contributors to the volume discuss the idiosyncratic social and cultural patterns that emerged at this pivotal period. An overarching narrative is woven by scholars from both regions who seamlessly integrate material culture, dwelling practices, controversial theory and ritual activities into a detailed image of the changing world of the early Neolithic in North-West Europe. Through a theoretically informed approach, the relationshA between material culture, subsistence regimes, monumentality, ceremonial activity and social relations is explored. The process in which people became 'Neolithic' is complex and required changes not just in subsistence but in every facet of their lives; this is what this book wishes to investigate. By leaving the traditional colonization and adoption debate for a more nuanced approached, an intricate cultural tapestry can be woven. From their organisation of the landscape to their place in the world, things were fundamentally altered: this is where the authors of this book focus their attention. This is a regionally focused, theoretically and methodologically complementary set of papers by specialists who offer a comprehensive and authoritative overview of different aspects of this fundamental transition.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the communication within archaeology and cultural heritage through mobile applications, also known as apps. It brings up digital media and apps as a way of communicating and in what ways this could broaden the existing communication within cultural heritage and archaeology towards a changing and digitalized society.

The thesis furthermore presents a study that was made with the purpose of investigating how three chosen apps communicating archaeology and cultural heritage are used and experienced and also if there was room for improvement within these apps

The study showed that every app was following a similar design since every app was at least partly dependent on that the person testing it was located in a particular place. This was experienced as limiting and this feature got a high amount of negative response from the users. Even though the apps delivered knowledge through popular digital media they still could not reach all the way to the users and the conclusion was made that it most likely was because of the location-based design and because they did not give the users themselves the ability to be involved in the content.

The conclusion is that it is not simply enough to digitalize communication because they also have to meet certain goals within quality and interactivity standards. This because modern smartphone users have higher expectations due to the high amount of apps avaliable on todays market. Suggestions are made about investments in working with the gaming inustries to make communication and learning via digital media interactive and with focus on the audience and the user.

This study is an analysis of how people from the former Yugoslavia saw their homeland. The aim is to investigate exiled Yugoslavs’ view of their homeland. The paper will also examine how Yugoslavia contributes to nostalgia. Additionally examine various groups’ of people view of Yugoslavia and the civil war. The source material used in this paper is mainly interviews. The interviewed persons are exiled Yugoslavs who were born between the years 1946-1960. Secondary source material is from literature. First hand literature used to examine Yugoslavia are: New Perspectives on Yugoslavia: Key issues and controversies edited by Dejan Djokic and James Ker-Lindsay, Balkan history: Yugoslavia rise and fall written by Sanimir Resic, Tito: Folkets diktator written by Björn Kumm. Method used in this paper is oral history. Through oral history, exiled Yugoslavs will tell how they experienced the former Yugoslavia. The survey showed that most exile Yugoslavs highlighted how good society, and their lives were back then in Yugoslavia. In addition, the study came to the conclusion that Yugoslavia contributes to nostalgia among exile Yugoslavians. Most of them travel back to their home country during their holidays to recharge both mentally and physically.

    Abstract [en]

Online social networks are a natural part of the lives of today’s western youth. Media and information literacy is a central part of research in Library and Information science and until now there has always been more focus on these subjects in a learning context rather than in an every day life context.

The aim of this study is to further examine how adolescent boys value and trust the information they receive via Twitter in their personal lives, and how this effects their view of their environment. The study was done with a qualitative method, where we conducted interviews with six boys who were all born in 1997. The results showed that they knew how to react critically to information on Twitter. Although none of the participants valued information on Twitter too seriously, they did feel that it kept them more updated than if they had not been using the social network.

    Abstract [en]

We can conclude that there are differences between the curriculum of primary and secondary school from year 1994 and 2011, current concepts of historical consciousness, gender and equality between men and women. Our paper describes the differences among the four curriculums focusing on the subject history. In our paper we have used an document analysis and our theory is based on curriculum theory. The result that we have presented demonstrate the development of the historical consciousness, it is more developed and divided which makes it more simplified to understand. The gender and equality perspective have various differences, but for the most part the equality perspective are well presented in the curriculum, and more developed in the 2011 curriculum. The curriculum from 1994 have similarities with the curriculum from year 2011 but the word gender is only presented once in the new curriculum for the secondary school from 2011. The result of this paper is that we found the gender concept relatively new, but the perspective is produced in the curriculums through other words like sexuality, female and male.

Savu: History and Oral Tradition on an Island of Indonesia2018Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The work combines anththropological fieldwork and archival research in order to study the historical trajectories of Savu, an island in the Indonesian province Nusa Tenggara Timur. Savunese society is marked by a tight genealogically defined social system which has been able to allocate scarce natural resources. The island, traditionally divided into five domains or princedoms, was included in the political network of the Dutch VOC in the 1640s. The Savunese had importance for the Dutch as providers of auxiliaries, and later as exporters of horses, textiles, etc. The book follows the vicissitudes of Savu over the colonial period, Japanese occupation, revolution, and the postcolonial era.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate how teachers, at secondary schools, think about children’s information literacy. This is explored based on three questions:

    • What do teachers consider information literacy to be?

    • How do teachers work to develop student’s information literacy?

    • How do teachers view children’s information literacy?

The reason for this study sprung form the lack of former research in the area of teacher's view of information literacy. The reason why this is a problem is because students are viewed to benefit from a partnership between thelibrarians and teachers when learning information literacy. It’s also necessarythat children develop information skills to make sure that they can be a part of a democratic society. To answer these questions nine teachers are interviewed. The way these interviews were structured were in line with whatis written about “semi-structured interviews”. To analyze the results from the interviews performed, Christine Bruce’s “Seven faces of informationliteracy” is applied.

The results and analysis showed that teachers often view information literacy as the ability to search for information, evaluate it from a critical standpoint and handle digital tools. When it comes to how they explain these differentconcepts it’s often connected to a specific task. The teachers explain whatthey consider the students to know at this point in their life. A few times the teachers view on information literacy differs from Bruce, but for the most time Bruce categories of information literacy are still relevant despite the differences in context and time.

    Abstract [en]

During the 19th and 20th century, Sweden saw a dramatic increase of illegitimate children. The phenomenon was not however equally distributed, as the frequency was much lower in the western parts of the country. In several doctoral thesis, the development has been explained with the advancing industrialization of the modern society. The primary aim of this study has been to test this thesis in Västbo district 1860-1939. The district, which is located in the heart of the south western parts of Sweden, had around the turn of the century 1900, several more or less industrialized towns, but was still strongly influenced by the surrounding agrarian parishes. As expected, the parishes with an established industry, tended to have a higher proportion of illegitimate births than those of agrarian character. Therefore, the same thesis that has been accepted on a national scale, can also be applied on a local scale, even within the region that represents a low proportion of illegitimate births. The study has also proven that the majority of the illegitimate children’s fathers were unknown, which often put the mother in a difficult economic and social situation. On the other hand, a bigger proportion of the fathers were identified from 1926, when each municipality was obliged to institute a child welfare committee. The main material of the study has been the birth books and the child welfare committees’ protocols.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the educational value of time travel role-play organized by Kalmar läns museum and how the method relates to the current curriculum Lgr11. This is done by examining the method using Gagné´s events of instruction and applying two theories represented by Vygotskij and Dewey. The material analyzed consists of two interviews in which respondents are familiar with the educational tool´s structure and the manuals written by Ebbe Westergren, first curator at the museum. The results show that depending on how the role-play is designed, it has the potential to serve as a teaching tool in history. This for its varied teaching technique and of it extent the method complies with Gagné´s nine points. In the final section of the analysis shows that the time travel role-play as a teaching method is compliant with the elements of Lgr11. Due to the amount of time that the method requires in order to reach its full potential, there is a debate on whether the time travel role-play takes much time away from other crucial content in the curriculum.

    Abstract [en]

The ever-evolving information technology gives users more opportunities, but also put higher demands on them. The digital agenda of the state and society clarifies the objectives and effects academic libraries’ development. E-books influence the development of organizational, economic, legal and political perspectives.

At the University Library in Gävle work is ongoing. The process is controlled by the acquisition policy which makes it clear that e-books should be purchased if possible. By offering e-books including textbooks it expands the availability for student demands. It is one of University Libraries fundamental tasks.

The curiosity about how this work is received by students is the purpose of this thesis and addresses the questions concerning what affects students' acceptance, perception, attitude and usage of e-books in studies at the University of Gävle?

Through an online questionnaire based on a theoretical foundation developed to be used in tests of new information technology, Technology Acceptance Model, students' perceptions of e-books is mapped. Important variables are perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use which influence the attitude, the intention to use and actual use.

The thesis concluded that students accept e-books as a supplement to printed books. The factor students’ value as most important is availability and that it is easy to find. The main goal of students' reading is to gain access to required literature of the course and perceived usefulness of e-books is primarily to its being available which affects studying and learning.

    Abstract [en]

Between craftsmanship and outsourcing - challenges in purchasing literature in languages other than Swedish and English at Swedish public libraries. This paper examines how ten librarians working in Swedish public libraries perceive challenges connected to the acquisition of books in languages other than Swedish and English. It makes an attempt to explain how these challenges affect the librarians’ acquisition process and push it towards either a craftsmanship based process or a process based on a high degree of outsourcing responsibility. The method used was qualitative interviews with librarians that had acquisition of books in languages other than Swedish or English as part of their work responsibilities. A total of eight interviews, two of them group interviews with two participants, were conducted. Five of the interviewed librarians worked in a large city, while five worked in three smaller municipalities. The analysis was inspired by Evans’ & Saponaro’s model of the collection development process and Brian Quinn’s use of George Ritzer’s theory of McDonaldization to examine the state of academic libraries in the U.S.A. Three main challenges are discussed; identifying user needs, absence of language or literature knowledge and poor availability of books. The interviewed librarians acquisition processes could be said to exist on a scale between a high degree of craftsmanship and a high degree of outsourcing. One factor pushing librarians towards an outsourcing of responsibility was absence of language knowledge, which lead to a higher degree of dependency on vendor assessment of literature. Mandatory purchasing agreements and lack of adequate technical and cataloging services inhouse were also factors affecting the acquisition process as they lead to less choice in vendor selection and as a consequence hindered the librarians’ ability to take on responsibility in selecting and acquiring books.

    Abstract [en]

Within the educational system you will experience students from different cultures, thus the question was asked: what are the expectations on you as a teacher when working with the students’ process of a positive identity view? The essay has examined how elementary school and the sami school work with identity in school and in history class. The investigation has been executed through Critical Doscourse Analysis (CDA) on the source material Syllabi and course plan for history subject for elementary school and sami school fråm 1994 and 2011, and syllabus for sami school from 1996. The results presented reveals a change in how the words identity and the sami people are assoicated with and how these concepts should be treated in the syllabi and the cours plans for history from 1994 and 2011. In the syllabi and course plan in history from 1994 identity is strongly associated with culture and cultural heritage and the sami perspective should be included as a part of the swedish and nordic perspective. The sami school has provided the teachers with a guidance in the history subject including how to teach in order to mediate a sami perspective. In the syllabus and course plan for history from 2011, the sami perspective is exkluded and instead the sami people are placed in a context of learning about “the others”. Identity is no longer strongly associated with culture in this syllabus, but instead the focus is directed towards language and historical narratives connected with identity development.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus?: A comparative study of Karl Marx, Slavoj Žižek and Alain Badiou’s reflections on revolution2015Studentarbete övrigt, 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This qualitative thesis analyses the development of Marxian thought on riots and revolution in the works of Slavoj Žižek and Alain Badiou. Due to the structural limitations of this essay, the research has been limited to a comparison between Karl Marx’s The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte and a selection of Žižek and Badiou’s works. Furthermore, the scope of the essay focuses on two material events; the coup d’état of Louis Bonaparte and the England riots of 2011. The comparison was concretised through the usage of Ludvig Beckman’s model for idea analysis and the method of ideal types. This study demonstrated how the modern theorists remain loyal to Marx’s basic analysis of society and concepts such as alienation and exploitation. However, the deterministic and eschatological aspects of Marx’s philosophy have been abandoned for a less ineluctable history, and resonate more towards the Hegelian notion of an open history. This study has also elucidated and cemented the vital importance of the material circumstances in a historical materialist study; moreover, it has revealed the necessity for the modern theorists to reinvent and radicalise a number of Marx’s original concepts for the modern world. Žižek and Badiou also contest Marx’s insistence on the requisite nature of violent revolution, and promote the politics of subtraction as an alternative.

    Abstract [en]

MBD, DAMP, ADD and ADHD are all concepts that through history have been used as labels to explain people with concentration difficulties. The purpose of this essay is to illustrate how the school's view on pupils with concentration difficulties has changed over the years. In addition, it shows how the school's view of pupils with concentration difficulties has affected both the teaching, the role of the teachers and the students. In the 1950s, the concept of MBD was used. In the 1990s, the term DAMP was used and today children with concentration problems are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. In this essay I follow how perceptions of these difficulties has changed in line with the concept differences.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine whether the descriptions of Stalin's terror in history textbooks for high school changed from the 1950s until the 2010s. Since previous research shows that textbook content is influenced from different directions and that it dominates in teaching, therefore I want to find out what similarities and differences that exist in the textbooks. The survey is based on a qualitative approach because I want to have a profound picture of the descriptions of Stalin's terror. The results of the survey show that the number of casualties and the descriptions on the famine has changed over time. Furthermore, textbooks also found it difficult to distinguish between terror, politics and ideology. The analysis of the results linked to the theoretical bases, historical consciousness model and history didactic model. The analysis shows that the result always ends up in historical consciousness as the basis for reproducing change and continuity, but in some cases the result has also been connected with historical consciousness of identity formation. In the history didactic model, the result has fallen into the material history teaching subcategories, objective, purpose and classically purpose.
