Behovet alltid större än möjligheterna: En fallstudie av de drabbade kommunernas kriskommunikation i samband med branden i Västmanland2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The tsunami in Thailand in 2004, 9/11 and hurricane Katrina in New Orleans 2005 are all reminders that no organization is immune to crises, which also means that all organizations should be prepared and know how to handle a crisis if one was to occur.

A case study has been conducted, on a crisis regarding a fire that occurred on the 31st of July 2014 in Västmanland, Sweden. Through Qualitative interviews empirical data was gathered and then analyzed together with our theories and previous research. The purpose of the study is to analyze how the municipalities affected and the County Administrative Board of Sweden handled and communicated with/to the public during the fire that spread in Västmanland 2014.

Our study shows that a risk analysis and analysis of surroundings is crucial in anticipating a crisis event and that it is essential for organizations to undergo training to prepare organization members on how to handle a crisis. Another conclusion is that the need for information is large during a crisis event and grows throughout the entire course of the crisis. The crisis that we studied had a lack of information, but at the same time the public’s need for information is a need that can’t be satisfied during a crisis. And if the organizations concerned do not satisfy the public’s need for information, rumors will start to disseminate to cater to the public’s needs. Rumors have always been a part of crisis communication but has with today’s technologies assumed a digital form which means that they can spread to a wider group of people. The digital and social media constituted of an essential tool for the affected stakeholders crisis communication and the local radio played an important role in managing the crisis.

    Abstract

Title: The Emperor’s New Clothes? - A qualitative case study about content marketing

The digital media landscape has created a shift in how information is produced, consumed and shared. This has led to difficulties for companies, in reaching their costumers through traditional marketing teqniques. To operate in the digital environment marketing has shifted towards a more content based marketing. Which has led to the use of content marketing, a marketing technique that focuses on creating and distributing valuable, relevant and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience. To understand the use of content marketing the purpose of the study has been to examine content marketing, in which areas it operates and how it used as a means of strategic communication.

The method applied for the research was based on a hermeneutic methodology and has an abductive approach. Furthermore the empirical material consists of qualitative interviews with four people from four different content bureaus: Annica Thorberg from Marketing House, Dennis Guldstrand from Doidea, Mikael Asp-Tjällden from Digital Dominance and Oscar Johansson from Glory Days. The theoretical framework applied consists of convergence culture, the marketing mix and relationsship marketing.

The result of the study indicates that content marketing seems to be a marketing strategy striving towards a more journalistic approach, though operating on the terms of the marketing industri. Through a more content based strategy the goal is to create visibility. Furthermore the study showed that SEO is used as a way of creating visibility more than anything else. Through search engines the bureaus are able to distribute content without affecting the costumers with intrusive commercial messages.

Keywords: Content marketing, relationship marketing, the marketing mix, the convergence culture

Allt kött är hö: En kulturanalytisk studie om hur produktion och konsumtion av animalier legitimiteras i samtal om klimat och hållbarhet2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

I slutet

    egentligen uppkom.

”Vi ville ha en plats att vara på”: En undersökning om tillkomsten av ett kulturhus2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The use of computer and video games has increased immensely over the past few decades and today a majority of the Swedish population enjoys them on a daily basis. With such a large number of frequent users, the media reporting on the subject of games becomes interesting and important. How are games represented in the media, and has there been any change in the way they are portrayed as their popularity has grown?

The aim of this study is to determine if and how the portrayal of computer and video games in Swedish newspapers has changed during the period 1995–2012. The study was conducted with the use of quantitative content analysis and the empirical data was collected from the two most widespread newspapers in Sweden – DN and Aftonbladet. The main theories used to analyze and interpret the data consisted of framing theory and theories on the concept of moral panics.

The result of the study shows that there has been a large increase in the number of articles that treats the subject of games, especially in the period 1995—2002. When games are described in negative contexts, the issue most often discussed is the violent content and the negative effect it has on the user. In recent years, however, more focus has been directed towards the beneficial effects of games.

    Abstract [en]

This article discusses the construction of death in popular media's use of surveillance footage, and more specifically images depicting the time before death occurs. There are many explanations why these kinds of images of death seem to fit the media format: They are assumed to be authentic; they potentially produces a point of identification for spectators; and finally they represent the time before it is all too late – before death occurs. Hence, they paradoxically represent also hope.

Medierad övervakning: En studie av övervakningens betydelser i svensk dagspress2009Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This doctoral thesis explores the use of surveillance images and discourses of surveillance in the Swedish press. Questions concerning surveillance appear frequently in the news today. The ongoing »War on Terror« has generated numerous news reports informing their audiences how surveillance technologies will protect society, prevent terrorist attacks, and ensure security. The purpose of the study is to examine representations of surveillance in Swedish newspapers, more specifically, how they use surveillance- and amateur images in their reporting. In order to carry this out, the thesis sets up two areas of concern: news on terrorism and news on police violence. The questions that produce the field of inquiry relate to how discourses of surveillance are articulated in text and image. They also concern construction of social identities related to reproduction of power relations, normality, and deviance. Research material used in this study consists of journalistic texts and visual images published in mainly four major Swedish newspapers; Aftonbladet, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. A qualitative research strategy was undertaken inspired by discourse analysis. The analysis focuses on four major issues: representations of terrorists, intensified surveillance, victims, and representations of police violence. The analysis concentrates on surveillance images that were used by news media to visually represent the terrorists involved in the so called »London bombings« in 2005. The thesis also highlights how politicians and other experts become the predominant subjects who proclaim the need for a more modern, efficient, and enhanced surveillance technology. A further issue ofinterest concerns media representations of victims and especially how the construction of victims reproduces normality, and further, how victimisation is related to surveillance. The newspapers used amateur footage from ‘the bomb scene’ in ways that represent the victims, not as objects, but as active agents participating in an act of surveillance. How the public become represented as victims of the surveillance society is examined. Dystopic stories about negative aspects of surveillance including islamophobia and fear of intrusion of privacy emerge as major themes. Finally, the study seeks to connect surveillance to resistance. Different media events on police violence are discussed in the light of events that have been filmed by amateur video or surveillance cameras. Surveillance in a mediated context is a complex field with many different and contradicting meanings and connotations. However, it is clear that surveillance links up with security, resistance, power and control, intrusion of privacy, and above all, to the reproduction of social differences between Us and Them. The news media seems to promote a public discourse of fear, which may contribute to legitimisation of both present and future demands for intensified surveillance. Nonetheless, mediated surveillance may also help to resist and challenge power hierarchies in society and promote social change.

Visibility and surveillance in a hybrid media culture2013In: Hybrid media culture: sensing place in a world of flows / [ed] Simon Lindgren, London: Routledge, 2013, p. 34-50Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article provides a theoretical discussion of the relationship between visibility and surveillance in the context of digital media from three intersecting perspectives. As its starting point the chapter takes the concept of the panoptic gaze to discuss how new media platforms can be understood as a site where social control is managed. In order to gain a better understanding of the relation described above the notion of synopticism and the interplay between new and old media is discussed. The third perspective to be examined is the individualization of surveillance and here the connection between digital media, empowerment and identity building is scrutinized. A conclusion that is drawn in this chapter is that it seems to have become more legitimate to watch others and to be watched by others in today's hybrid media culture. Visibility and surveillance has become, not only associated with monitoring by states and commercial sectors, but has also become a tool for political resistance as well as technology for subjects to build identity.

From realism to post truth? News, museums and higher education against fake news and fact resistance

Recently, the problem with fake news, fact resistance and the growing digital, global circulation of disinformation have caused debates and worries, and posed a challenge for several institutions of knowledge in society. In this article, we discuss how the news industry, museums and higher education confront the challenges of the ‘post truth’ era. We can see a mobilization by these institutions in Sweden: The news industry has initiated so-called fact checking sites, the major museums create exhibitions about false news and educate youth in digital literacy and many universities have launched initiatives to legitimize scientific knowledge production, thereby safeguarding professional authority. However, these initiatives are faced with dilemmas concerning how concepts of knowledge, truth and facts are negotiated and understood. This article discusses such epistemological issues in general, and focuses in particular on the risk of falling into the trap of so called neorigorism.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to analyse and compare how technologies of media monitoring have been imagined as seeing devices at two turning points in media history – around 1900 and in the 2000s. The press-cutting agencies that were established during the late nineteenth century, depending on human eyes and scissors, were said to deliver customized news updates, business data and information on public opinion. As seeing devices, they took names such as Argus, Observer and Atlas. These agencies made it possible to see the world on paper. Today, media monitoring depends on automatic processes rather than human eyes. Yet, digital technologies are usually represented by images of old media devices such as magnifying glasses, binoculars, telescopes and watchtowers. These well-known and transparent technologies make the black boxes of digital media seem less strange, but they might also mask the assumptions and complexities that are built into them.

Technologies of participation: community news and social media in northern Sweden2016In: Journalism - Theory, Practice & Criticism, ISSN 1464-8849, E-ISSN 1741-3001, Vol. 17, no 8, p. 1113-1128Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores how different meanings of 'participation' are developed in the intersection between local journalism and social media. The study is based on qualitative interviews with media professionals working in community media organisations in northern Sweden. Three key themes are identified: participation as marketisation, participation and production, and participation and democracy. This article discusses how these three different forms of participation contribute to the constitution of journalistic identities in a local context and to its meanings within the media sphere in general. This article argues that the emergence of new digital media has not so much renewed the role of the media professional as it has led to a cementing of their professional identity. Social media are a necessity for the development of journalism and are celebrated for their potential to include audiences; yet journalists paradoxically seem to consider these same technologies of participation as a threat, not only to journalism but also to democracy.

Digital politik: sociala medier, deltagande och engagemang2015Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Zara Larsson and the male haters.

A critical discourse analysis of the medias depiction of the singer Zara Larsson’s commentary on Bråvallafestivalen 2015

Zara Larsson, born in 1997, is a famous, young swedish singer. Besides her career in music she is also famous for her feminist thoughts in social media. In 2015, she critizised the swedish festival Bråvallafestivalen for its lack of female artists. This critizism was first published in the swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter and afterwards there was a huge reaction in social media where lots of people critizised and threatened Zara Larsson because of her thougths.

Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore how swedish newspapers reports about this situation and how Zara Larsson is portrayed, from a genderperspective. We are using a thematic analysis and a critical discourse analysis as a method. The analysis is based on articles and opinion journalism in swedish newspapers from all over the country.

Theories we have used for the study is gendersystems and ideology.

The main conclusion of this study is that the debate ended up to be very polarized, and that the supporting side of Zara Larsson dominated the debate, while the opposition tended to be some sort of hopeless contenders. We could also se that the main ideology was feminism, both visible and hidden in the texts.

Keywords: Critical discourse analysis, Thematic analysis, gender, Zara Larsson, Bråvalla festival.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to discern the didactic potential of fanfiction and transmedial storyworlds in a classroom context. This is studied through the analysis of works from two transmedial storyworlds: Star Trek and Sherlock Holmes. The works are examined using Herman’s (2009) four narrative elements. The study shows that fanfiction writers change one or more narrative elements of a story to build their own narrative. Some writers keep the narrative elements intact but instead write stories that reflect their own lives. Both the Star Trek and Sherlock Holmes narratives are prototypical stories that are easy to follow and recreate and that might be why they are popular in a fanfiction context. The study shows that fanfiction has a didactic potential and that one important aspect of using fanfiction in the classroom is to be open to student’s interpretations of the narrative.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation studies the Swedish author Jeanna Oterdahl (1879–1965), and the fairy tales and stories she wrote in the period 1908–1927. Oterdahl was a well-known Christian public intellectual in her day. Besides being an author, she worked as a teacher and a lecturer, and was importantly involved in a number of organizations for societal development, such as the Association of the Christian Social Life [Förbundet för kristet samhällsliv] and the Settlement Movement [Hemgårdsrörelsen].

The purpose of this study is to investigate the religious elements in her fairy tales and stories, and to study how these elements relate to the ideology of the early Swedish women’s emancipation movement. This movement rejected the conservative Christian faith of the Lutheran State Church, and aligned itself with the liberal form of Christianity that, to a greater extent, recognized the equality of men and women before God.

Part I deals with the Christian message of love and its relation to emancipatory elements in Otherdahl’s stories. The point of departure for the analysis is Bremer’s interpretation of the Virgin Mary’s response to God’s calling, "Behold, the Lord’s servant" [Se, Herrens tjänarinna] and its emancipatory meaning. The women of Oterdahl’s stories take the role of servants of the Lord – not Lords [Herrens tjänarinna, inte herrarnas]

Part II studies the female characters’ quest for their true (female) selves and their true home where alienation between the sexes will cease to exist and a spiritual kinship can take its place. This true home need not necessarily be a physical place; it can be in the form of an idea or a faith in something higher – such as God – where the self can live and reach its full personal potential. Part II analyzes Oterdahl’s understanding of the female characters’ quest against the background of Emilia Fogelklou’s interpretation of the role of Eve in the Genesis creation narrative (presented in her work “Two fairy tales” [Två sagor]), and against the background of one of Oterdahl’s own lectures, “How We Create a Home” [Hur vi skapa ett hem].

The study ends with a discussion of how the concepts of freedom and power figure in Oterdahl’s stories. “Freedom” in Oterdahl’s stories is not a pursuit of power, but has to do with the use of one’s special gifts and with service to others. Freedom, in other words, means to take on responsibilities not only in the private home, but also in the community. Fogelklou describes this as a “human cause” [människosak] – something for women and men to strive for together.

By examining how the Christian message of love is expressed through the emancipatory efforts of the female protagonists in Oterdahl’s stories, the dissertation highlights a new dimension in her work, and puts in question the common description of her stories as reactionary. Reinterpreted against the background of the Christian concept of calling/vocation and the ideology of the early emancipationist movement, the seemingly reactionary stories can be understood as emphasizing the importance of women in a changing society.

Hälsokommunikation i ett nytt medielandskap: En kvalitativ studie av Hälsa 2020 kommunikativa utmaningar i en konvergenskultur2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate the communication challenges of Hälsa 2020. To achieve this purpose, the following theories have been used: media convergence, mediatization, social communication, excellence model and communication strategies. The material of this study consists of four interviews with both public health workers and communication professionals.

The results and analysis of the study showed that mediatization is influencing the communication work of Hälsa 2020 in terms of language and formats. Another thing that influenced the communication is the obligation to communicate to everybody, where communicating to vulnerable groups is seen as particularly challenging. The results of the study also showed that Hälsa 2020 is working with production of facts to frame themselves as experts. This indicates how Hälsa 2020 is navigating in a new media landscape where a consumer can be a producer and vice versa. Therefore, the previous information monopoly of medical expertise can be said to be challenged by other sources of information in this new media landscape.

Alternativa medier – Propaganda eller inte?: En kritisk diskursanalys av Samhällsnytt och Fria tiders rapportering av Sverigedemokraterna.2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Alternative Media is a new phenomenon when it comes to bringing us the news. These Alternative News sites has often being accused for being bias and favour right-wing parties. The purpose of this thesis has been to see how the Alternative News sites Samhällsnytt and Fria tider have been reporting news about the Swedish right wing party, Sverigedemokraterna (SD) before the Swedish election 2018. And if their articles have similarities to propaganda. With help of a critical discource analysis, it has been possible to see traces of propaganda in the material. The majority of the articles reproduce a discourse where SD is seen as the alternative to a Swedish society that does not work as it should. SD are also presented as a victim in the society when they are involved in news that otherwise could give them a negative image.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study is about rock art and cultural heritage. The main focus is how the participants in the project Rock Art in Sápmi work with these issues. The aim with the project is to increase the knowledge about rock art and cultural heritage and open up for new thoughts and visions about the past, present and future. The project involves different professions such as archeologists and various kinds of artists.

Except literature studies, this study is based on interviews with persons who are involved in Rock Art in Sápmi. As the participants work with the material and questions based on various inputs, this provides a broad basis for understanding of what rock art and cultural heritage mean and how they can be used.

The aim with this study is to examine the meaning of cultural heritage, such as rock art, how it is used and what possibilities it gives us today.

Cultural heritage is an ambiguous term. It is something that changes over time and cannot be seen as something static. It is obvious that it has and can be used by different groups to prove opinions when the interpretations support a given answer. Furthermore, it is clear that the structures in the society can be seen in the interpretations.

Due to the ambiguity of the term, different perspectives have been used in this work, for example, gender perspectives and theories of ethnicity. By examining such perspectives on the material, it shows that it is not obvious that a particular interpretation is the only right one. Interpretations can often be dependent on time and structures in the society, built on a variety of factors.

Depending on what issues that are being discussed, different theories have been tested but a constructivist approach is consistently used, meaning that gender roles and cultural heritage for example, are created by social structures and are not determined.

This study shows that meanings ascribed to cultural heritage and rock art can be seen as the effects of ideology and time. Interpretations change over time and it is clear that they often say something about how it looks in the societies in which they are made. The man, for example, has often been seen as the norm and women have been disparaged. Besides, the connection between Sami culture and rock art has in some societies been invisible, while in others it has been not. It is also clear that rock art and cultural heritage can be relevant for us today when they show universal human aspirations and challenges.

"Hur kan ni använda denna sortens kvinnoförtryck i er reklam!!": En kvalitativ undersökning av responsen H&M och Åhléns fått på Facebook i och med sina kampanjer med slöjbärande kvinnor.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper, ”How can you use such kind of oppression against women in your advertising!!!”- A qualitative study of the response H&M and Åhléns recieved due to their campaigns with veild women” is about how the veil and the veild woman are mentioned in the respons of the campaigns and which values that can provide the veiled woman in the society. To find this out, I have used a critical text analysis where I have analyzed the vocabulary and sentence structure. The theories underlying this study are post-colonial feminism, Stuart Halls representation and the New media landscape. All of these theories has been used to analyse the material. The results showed that the veil was both mentioned as a symbol of oppression and freedom and the veild woman was someone who, for some people, both fought for justice and a free society and by some, someone who is deeply oppressed. The conclusions that can be drawn from the results is that the veil, still is something that is seen as an oppression of women, and doesn’t belong in Sweden. But it is also possible to interpret it in such a way that the veil is something that has come to be accepted in society, and for many, gained a new and different meaning from before. The main conclusion is that the veil still is something that is highly debated and that the veiled woman is someone that the western countries have different views on.

    Abstract [en]

Today’s fashion trends come and go with lightning speed creating a system that embodies unsustainability and consumerism, at the same time an increasing environmental consciousness is putting pressures on companies to operate in a more sustainable way, without losing profits. This study examines how fast fashion giant H&M communicates about corporate social responsibility (CSR) – specifically in their press releases, and how they portrait themselves as a sustainable company. A qualitative rhetorical analysis was conducted on H&M:s press releases between 2016 – 2018, applying Weber’s theory of legitimacy as well as Putnam’s theory of social capital. The results show that H&M frequently reinforces their own legitimacy and ethos in sustainability issues by “borrowing” other organizations credibility through cooperation with environment-focused NGO:s. As well as distancing themselves from their suppliers when problems arise in the supply chain, denying any responsibility.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to see how men, women and children are made in the Ikea 2014 catalog, this from a gender perspective. It will also examine if gender stereotypes are seen and how equal the people in the images is produced.

This essay is studied on the basis of gender theory and theories about stereotypes and how men, women and children are prepared in advertising and commercials. The method that was used during the analysis process was a qualitative semiotic method. The analysis tool that was used from the semiotic method was denotation, connotation and metonymy.

The result of the study shows that the major part of the pictures that was analyzed was gender stereotypical and that a few of the pictures showed some kind of equality between men and women, both between grow ups and children. One of the conclusions that were made is that Ikea, in some, pictures show that equality is something that they think about and that they care about the Swedish opinions when it comes to equality between human beings, as they, Ikea, are a Swedish based company.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to investigate how depictions of transgenders in fiction can be used to discuss gender identity. The essay examines how transgenders is portrayed in three novels and how these novels can be used in Swedish schools. Transgenders in literature has historically only been used to normalize cisgender. The Swedish school is an arena dominated by norms and the cisgender-norm controls the students, furthermore it penetrates the school curriculum. At the same time, there is room for teachers to criticize norms and to choose the literature that best suits their purpose. The characters that appear in literature are supposed to be able to say something about real people, and the analysis of the novels is made from a queer feminist perspective. The novels Skarven and Jag, En have some norms to debate and stereotypes to problematize, therefore they are useful when transgender is to be elucidated through fiction. Pojkarna, on the other hand, have a disrespectful portrayal of the transgendered character which instead risks confirming the view of cisgender as the normal and transgender as the abnormal.

    Abstract [en]

The study of the museum visitor has undergone radical transformation. Each author here has asked unfamiliar questions and responded with fresh answers. Some of these questions involve the visitor's identity, what she brings to her museum experience. Can we gain entry into this experience? Does more technology really increase access to the objects themselves? Others probe the very nature of museum going and exhibition making, demanding that we reexamine the traditional exhibition to reposition the visitor and her meaning-making at the centre. The volume provokes imaginative research and encourages new conclusions.

    Abstract [en]

Gender is a constantly debated subject, especially within the world of sports. The representation of athletes in the media is dominated by the males. It is often that the athletes are portrayed on the basis of their sex and gender. With the extreme skiing being a new and modern sport, should it not be autonomous from gender? This study aims to examine whether and if so how the cover design differ between female and male extreme skiing athletes and how it affects the professional skiers. A semiotic analysis was used on the covers of the Swedish skier’s magazine Åka Skidor and interviews were held with some of Sweden’s professional extreme skiers using a hermeneutic approach. The theoretical framework used for this study was poststructuralism, poststructuralist feminism and gender theory.

The semiotic analysis showed that there is in fact a difference in both representation and how the skiers are portrayed on the covers of Åka Skidor. The interviews that were held resulted in three themes to answer the aim of this study. They were; the climate of extreme skiing, extreme skiing in media and the future of extreme skiing. The skiers had acknowledged that there is a difference between females and males when it comes to media representation and how they are portrayed. Although the explanation for this differs between the skiers they all mentioned the power of sponsors and sponsorship. However; the issue with athletes being portrayed and represented different based on their gender is not important enough to debate within the world of extreme skiing today. Therefore, it can be concluded that extreme skiing will probably not be autonomous from gender in the near future.

    More Media, More People—On Social & Multimodal Media Intelligence2017In: Human IT, ISSN 1402-1501, E-ISSN 1402-151X, Vol. 13, no 3, p. 54-84Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to address some challenges facing media intelligence in general, and competitive intelligence in particular within an altered information landscape. To understand this new situation, the notion of social and multimodal media intelligence are introduced. With cases taken primarily from the Swedish media intelligence sector, we argue that data driven media intelligence today needs to pay increasing attention to new forms of (A.) crowd-oriented and (B.) multimedia-saturated information. As a subcategory of media intelligence, competitive intelligence refers to the gathering of publicly available information about an organisation or a company’s competitors—using it to gain business advantages. Traditionally such intelligence has implied a set of techniques and tools that transforms numerical or textual data into useful information for business analysis. Today, however, we argue that such techniques need to consider media alterations in both a social and multimodal direction. Our analysis hence offers a conceptual understanding of a rapidly evolving field, were methods used within media intelligence need to change as well. By presenting some findings from the so called CIBAS-project, we describe how Swedish organisations and companies rely on social networking structures and individual decision making as a means to increase rapid response and agile creativity. If competitive intelligence was traditionally based on insights gleaned from statistical methods, contemporary media analytics are currently faced with audiovisual data streams (sound, video, image)—often with a slant of sociality. Yet, machine learning of other media modalities than text poses a number of technical hurdles. In this article we use fashion analytics as a final case in point, taken from a commercial sector where visual big data is presently in vogue.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the depiction of mental illness with elite athletes. Mental illness has long been a sensitive object in the public's eye, but in recent years that has started to shift and the subject has destigmatized. More and more people are open and talk about their inner problems. But in one group in society the development has not been up to pace, and that is elite athletes. The study has also looked at the difference between tabloid and daily press. The theoretical framework was constructed by using the agenda setting theory, the framing theory, theories of media logic and the thoughts of news evaluation. The method used in the study was critical discourse analysis, and used in the way through out by Norman Fairclough and his three dimensional modell. A total of 38 articles from the newspapers Dagens Nyheter, Svenska dagbladet, Aftonbladet and Expressen was analyzed.

The analysis found that the papers tend to portray mental illness as a negative major problem of today's society. A majority of the articles analyzed tended put the athlete aspect of the person in limelight, rather than letting the athlete just be a suffering person. They way the papers achieved to sustain the image of being a unbeatable hero by reminding the audience about the athletic achievements won, when the athlete was presented in the article.
