    Abstract [sv]

The securitization of asylum seeking in Sweden after 2015 in light of experiences of asylum-seeking girls with roots in Afghanistan2018In: The migration crises? Criminalization, security and survival / [ed] Dina Siegel, Veronika Nagy, Uppsala: The HAgue:Eleven , 2018, p. 363-388Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter aims to shed light from a gender perspective on the issue of security for asylum seeking adolescent girls in context of increased securitisation of the asylum-seeking process following the migration vogue of 2015. Half of those 163,000 asylum-seeking people who arrived to Sweden in 2015 were children, and half of them were unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC), a majority being boys from Afghanistan. As a response Sweden has reversed its open asylum regime to the minimum EU standard in 2016, including restrictive attitude towards granting residency for UASC. This article explores how the securitization radically changed the preconditions for the establishment of asylum-seeking adolescent girls. Beyond the review of previous research and new data sources it also explores the issue through the analyses of the life stories of two girls of Afghan origin. One of them arrived with her parents through family affiliation with her brother who had previously received asylum as an UASC. The other girl arrived as an UASC in 2015. The narrative analysis provides a voice to two girls and their experiences, and is to complement the research on post 2015 securitisation with focus on gender based vulnerabilities of adolescent girls.

The gendered subject of postsocialism: State-socialist legacies, global challenges and (re)building of tradition2018In: Gendering Postsocialism: Old Legacies and New Hierarchies, Taylor and Francis , 2018, p. 1-17Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

When the Berlin Wall fell in November 1989 and when, two years later, the Soviet Union crumbled and was divided into 15 independent states, the huge space formerly called the Communist Bloc or the countries of state socialism seemed to disappear forever, and an unprecedented process of change began. This process was just as unique from a historical perspective as the earlier attempts to build communism and/or state socialism. The changes had different speeds and directions, and while some states embraced the process of democratisation in order to “return to Europe”, others were experimenting with the ideals of a strong authoritarian state, religion, and a “return to tradition” to build a new society.

Now, however, nearly 30 years later, the different countries of this huge geographical space often continue to be addressed according to their common past, or as countries still in a state of transition or transformation from their previous condition – as postsocialist. In some cases the communist past seems to have been totally overcome, and these countries are recognized as European and democratic states with well-functioning market economies (as in the case of many countries that have joined the European Union). However, their position in the formerly socialist space can suddenly be remembered in exceptional circumstances, like during the refugee crisis of 2015 (Dalakoglou, 2016). In other cases, the changes do not seem to be thorough due to the emergence of authoritarian regimes and corruption. Thus, the states that have experienced slower changes are more frequently referred to through their past as “formerly” or “post” socialist.

In deference to these temporal interpretations, following Madina Tlostanova, we approach postsocialism not only in temporal terms, but also in spatial terms – as a space populated by millions of people whose experience is “underconceptualized” in the analysis of globalisation (Tlostanova, 2017, pp. 1-3). In choosing to analyse postsocialism as a “critical standpoint” in order to avoid the essencialisation of the region (Stella, 2015, p.133), we consider it important to explore gendered changes focusing on institutions, discourses, memories, identities, and fantasies that in one way or another connect to this postsocialist condition.

Although taking place in varied shapes and degrees, the dismantlement of state socialism and the emergence of “capitalism” in the former state socialist countries led to radical shifts in their economies as well as in the welfare state’s involvement in social citizenship. Gender relations were a key arena for the moulding of state-socialist citizenship where institutions, guarding women’s reproductive rights as well as their work opportunities, were raised to create the ideal socialist citizen. Gender norms and gender relations have also been a prime field for forming the postsocialist citizen. While we assume that the bondage between economic regimes and gender norms is not deterministic (Asztalos Morell, 1999), the contributions to this book further explore the connectivity between gender and economy without assuming reductionist causality or restricting the sphere of gender norms to the sphere of economic importance.

Thus, the main aim of this book is to explore changing gendered norms and expectations in relation to the postsocialist transformation in Eastern Europe and Eurasia. We explore how the gendered legacies of state socialism are entangled with the geopolitical re-orientation of the region and the simultaneity of socio-economic, political, and cultural changes in this geographical space. How are gender expectations shaped in the conflict between impulses towards more gender equality versus the re-naturalisation/re-traditionalisation of gender norms, and how are the new gender norms entangled with the neoliberal economic demands, precarities, “multifaceted injustice” (Suchland, 2015, p. 188), new forms of socio-economic differentiation, and insecurities? How can the analysis of gender norms and expectations in the space of former state socialism contribute to a study of global developments in gender relationships?

    Abstract [en]

This study deals with how school counselors at primary and secondary schools work preventively with honour oppression and forced marriage in school. The study also deals with the obstacles and opportunities the school counselors have in their work. To fulfill the aim of this study we have interviewed five school counselors in primary school and secondary school. The interviews were based on a qualitative method, through semi-structured interviews. The results shows that school counselors identify the vulnerable students by the students themselves or someone in their environment telling about the situation. They also go out with information about the problem and at the same time show that they are available no matter what the subject is about in order to be able to defuse their role as school counselors. They help and support the students by talking and listening to them, by paying attention to identify oppression and also by calling social services for advice and practical efforts. The last theme deals with what obstacles and opportunities the school counselors encounter in their work. It appears that there are more obstacles than opportunities for the school counselors because they are limited in their work. They find that they can only talk, inform and exist as support for the students.

The relevance of WHO injury surveillance guidelines for evaluation: learning from the Aboriginal Community-Centered Injury Surveillance System (ACCISS)and two institution-based systems2011In: BMC Public Health, ISSN 1471-2458, E-ISSN 1471-2458, Vol. 11, no 744Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    BACKGROUND:

Over the past three decades, the capacity to develop and implement injury surveillance systems (ISS) has grown worldwide and is reflected by the diversity of data gathering environments in which ISS operate. The capacity to evaluate ISS, however, is less advanced and existing evaluation guidelines are ambiguous. Furthermore, the applied relevance of these guidelines to evaluate ISS operating in various settings is unclear. The aim of this paper was to examine how the World Health Organization (WHO) injury surveillance guidelines have been applied to evaluate systems operating in three different contexts.

    METHODS:

The attributes of a good surveillance system as well as instructions for conducting evaluations, outlined in the WHO injury surveillance guidelines, were used to develop an analytical framework. Using this framework, a comparative analysis of the application of the guidelines was conducted using; the Aboriginal Community-Centered Injury Surveillance System (ACCISS) from Canada, the Shantou-Emergency Department Injury Surveillance Project (S-EDISP) from China, and the Yorkhill-Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program (Y-CHIRPP) imported from Canada and implemented in Scotland.

    RESULTS:

The WHO guidelines provide only a basic platform for evaluation. The guidelines over emphasize epidemiologic attributes and methods and under emphasize public health and injury prevention perspectives requiring adaptation for context-based relevance. Evaluation elements related to the dissemination and use of knowledge, acceptability, and the sustainability of ISS are notably inadequate. From a public health perspective, alternative reference points are required for re-conceptualizing evaluation paradigms. This paper offers an ISS evaluation template that considers how the WHO guidelines could be adapted and applied.

    CONCLUSIONS:

Findings suggest that attributes of a good surveillance system, when used as evaluation metrics, cannot be weighted equally across ISS. In addition, the attribute of acceptability likely holds more relevance than previously recognized and should be viewed as a critical underpinning attribute of ISS. Context-oriented evaluations sensitive to distinct operational environments are more likely to address knowledge gaps related to; understanding links between the production of injury data and its use, and the effectiveness, impact, and sustainability of ISS. Current frameworks are predisposed to disassociating epidemiologic approaches from subjective factors and social processes.

Prevention av Malignt Melanom: En litteraturöversikt över sjuksköterskors preventionsarbete2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Yngre kvinnors upplevelser under pågående bröstcancerbehandling: En litteraturstudie2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund:

Uppsats inlagd av Nadja Aula: Attityd till oskuldsnormen2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Swedish parents' experiences of parenthood and the need for support to siblings when a baby is stillborn2011In: Birth, ISSN 0730-7659, E-ISSN 1523-536X, Vol. 38, no 2, p. 150-158Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background:

It has been argued that having a stillborn baby in the family affects older siblings more than parents realize. The aim of this study was to describe parenthood and the needs of siblings after stillbirth from the parents' perspective.

    Methods:

Six focus groups were held with 27 parents who had experienced a stillbirth and who had had children before the loss. The discussion concerned parents' support to the siblings, and the sibling's meeting, farewell, and memories of their little sister or brother. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

    Results:

The overall theme of the findings was parenthood in a balance between grief and everyday life. In the analysis, three categories emerged that described the construction of the theme: support in an acute situation, sharing the experiences within the family, and adjusting to the situation.

    Conclusions:

The siblings' situation is characterized by having a parent who tries to maintain a balance between grief and everyday life. Parents are present and engaged in joint activities around the stillbirth together with the siblings of the stillborn baby. Although parents are aware of the sibling's situation, they feel that they are left somewhat alone in their parenthood after stillbirth and therefore need support and guidance from others.

Although there is an increasing interest in siblings' experiences of loss and grief there is limited knowledge of adolescent's own perspectives, especially in a unique situation as after stillbirth in a reconstituted family. The authors interviewed 13 bereaved adolescents. They were sad that their family was not the same and expressed feelings of being inside family grief, yet outside, because they did not have full access in their reconstituted family. An implication of present findings is that it is important to include all the members of the family in the grieving process, even half-siblings of the deceased child.

Parental grief and relationships after the loss of a stillborn baby2013In: Midwifery, ISSN 0266-6138, E-ISSN 1532-3099, Vol. 29, no 6, p. 668-73Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

OBJECTIVES: to describe the grief of mothers and fathers and its influence on their relationships after the loss of a stillborn baby.

DESIGN: a postal questionnaire at three months, one year and two years after stillbirth.

SETTING: a study of mothers and fathers of babies stillborn during a one-year period in the Stockholm region of Sweden.

PARTICIPANTS: 55 parents, 33 mothers and 22 fathers.

FINDINGS: mothers and fathers stated that they became closer after the loss, and that the feeling deepened over the course of the following year. The parents said that they began grieving immediately as a gradual process, both as individuals, and together as a couple. During this grieving process their expectations, expressions and personal and joint needs might have threatened their relationship as a couple, in that they individually felt alone at this time of withdrawal. While some mothers and fathers had similar grieving styles, the intensity and expression of grief varied, and the effects were profound and unique for each individual.

KEY CONCLUSIONS: experiences following a loss are complex, with each partner attempting to come to terms with the loss and the resultant effect on the relationship with their partner.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: anticipating and being able to acknowledge the different aspects of grief will enable professionals to implement more effective intervention in helping couples grieve both individually and together.

Medkänslotillfredsställelse: Sjuksköterskors erfarenheter2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Background: Patients with heart failure are a common patient group in many caring facilities. Previous research shows that the number of heart failure patients may increase in the future and that nurses do not have enough knowledge of how to treat patients with heart failure. Aim: To describe patients’ experiences of living with heart failure. Method: A literature study with descriptive synthesis. Result: Patients with heart failure may experience a change in life. These changes are limitations in performing physical activities which may result in increased stress on relatives and friends. Patients can feel that they are a burden as they become more dependent on others. Heart failure causes patients to experience anxiety and fear in their lives. Despite adverse consequences of heart failure, patients can accept the situation and thereby experience well-being. Conclusion: lack of knowledge, bodily and emotional changes were the root cause of patients experiencing a change in life due to heart failure. Nurses can help patients deal with the new life through support and good information. They should be perceptive to patients' experiences and can therefore promote patient’s well-being.

Ledarskapets betydelse för medarbetarnas hälsa: En kvalitativ studie om hur medarbetarna upplever att ledarskap bidrar till hälsa på arbetsplatsen2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sickness absence in Sweden increased sharply in the late 20th century and hit the higher educated persons who have not previously been on sick leave. Many people spend most of their lives at work and the work environment affects employees in different ways, where the leadership is a factor affecting the health of the individual. The workplace is therefore considered to be one venue where health promotion interventions to improve health can be implemented. That leadership affects employee health is considered given, but there is not much research in this area.

The aim of the study was to examine how employees in a workplace with low levels of sickness absence feel that leadership contributes to health in the workplace. The study was based on a qualitative approach where data was collected through telephone interviews with five persons. The workplace that is being studied has a low absenteeism and is based out of a county council in Sweden.

The results show that a good leader should be available, be supportive and clear. A leader who contributes to the health trust their staff, helping to prioritize, is sensitive and caring. A conclusion that can be drawn about the results is that contributing to employee health is the same as good leadership.

Fathers' care of the newborn infant after caesarean section in Chile: A qualitative study2016In: Sexual & Reproductive HealthCare, ISSN 1877-5756, E-ISSN 1877-5764, Vol. 8, p. 75-81Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: In Chilean hospitals the current model of care after caesarean section is to separate newborn infants from both parents. The care of newborn infants and the parents' experience immediately after caesarean section requires further exploration. Aim: To describe fathers' experiences and perceptions of being the primary caregiver to their newborn infant during the first 90 minutes after caesarean section in a public general maternity hospital setting in Santiago de Chile. Method: The questionnaire was one part of a larger research programme named: "Caregiving Models after Elective Caesarean Section Parents' perceptions and effects on infants' wellbeing". Four open ended questions were used to gather written text on the experiences and perceptions of 95 fathers who were the primary caregiver to their newborn infant. Ethical approval was obtained from the Ethics Committee, Scientific Assessment Metropolitan Health Service South East. Systematic text condensation according to Malterud's description was used for analysis of the written text. Findings: Two themes were identified: "understanding the first moment of life" and "shared responsibility for future family life" with each theme divided into six categories. Conclusion: This study concludes by arguing that in situations where the mother is unavailable or unable to provide basic care, the father should be supported to care for the newborn infant. Clinical implications: Parents should be made aware of the benefits of this caring model especially when mother and baby have been separated after birth.

Mother’s Experiences and Perceptions of a Continuous Caring Model with Fathers after Caesarean Section: A Qualitative Study2015In: The Open Women's Health Journal, ISSN 1874-2912, E-ISSN 1874-2912, p. 63-71Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: In Chile, mothers and newborns are separated after caesarean sections. The caesarean section rate in Chile is approximately 40%. Once separated, newborns will miss out on the benefits of early contact unless a suitable model of early newborn contact after caesarean section is initiated.

Aim: To describe mothers experiences and perceptions of a continuous parental model of newborn care after caesarean section during mother-infant separation.

Methods: A questionnaire with 4 open ended questions to gather data on the experiences and perceptions of 95 mothers in the obstetric service of Sótero Del Rio Hospital in Chile between 2009 and 2012. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

Results: One theme family friendly practice after caesarean section and four categories. Mothers described the benefits of this model of caring. The fathers presence was important to mother and baby. Mothers were reassured that the baby was not left alone with staff. It was important for the mothers to see that the father could love the baby as much as the mother. This model of care helped create ties between the father and newborn during the period of mother-infant separation and later with the mother.

Conclusions: Family friendly practice after caesarean section was an important health care intervention for the whole family. This model could be stratified in the Chilean context in the case of complicated births and all caesarean sections.

Clinical Implications: In the Chilean context, there is the potential to increase the number of parents who get to hold their baby immediately after birth and for as long as they like. When the mother and infant are separated after birth, parents can be informed about the benefits of this caring model. Further research using randomized control trials may support biological advantages.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Involuntary Marriages From a Human Rights Perspective: Towards an Analytical Framework2018In: The Journal of Mesopotamian Studies, ISSN 2147-6659, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 95-120Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to develop an analytical framework for understanding involuntary marriages from a human rights perspective based on the United Nations’ human rights conventions and the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. The empirical material used as a basis for an analytical framework consists of 16 thematic open-ended interviews with Kurds in Sweden. A total of eight of the 16 respondents were below 18 years of age when they married. The results from these interviews show that the majority of interviewees’ marriages are arranged. The results also show that the reasons behind these marriages and the consequences of them are complex and go beyond being mere expressions of gender roles. In addition to the fathers who typically have greater influence than the mothers do, there are differences in power and influence among women as well, such as mothers’ power over daughters and step-mothers’ power over step-daughters. Therefore, there is a need for new and wider perspectives on involuntary marriages, and the analytical framework developed in this article is a part of such a purpose.

    Abstract [en]

Developing a program theory for a project and evaluate the project based on this program theory has both its merits and limitations. These merits and limitations in turn may be depend on the existing attitude towards a particular program theory. This study is about exploring how different phases and parts of the national learning project Care on equal terms (2011-2014) functioned in relation to the program theory developed in the beginning of the project. The result shows that the program theoretical perspective on the project contributed to a better structuring of the various forms of evaluation, given a broader understanding of the project's components and provided better opportunities to improve monitoring of the project by the research team in collaboration with the project management of the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR) and the participating health care units.

Mångfaldens organisering: Om integration, organisationer och interetniska relationer i Sverige2007Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this dissertation is to examine inter-ethnic relations between organizationally active people with different ethnic backgrounds. I focus on relations that are based on a mutual interdependence between parties, mutual respect, common procedural rules, real opportunities that expressly approve or reject a proposal in a decision or deliberation situation free from compulsion, where people, who have different ethnic backgrounds, strive after insight and understanding in their relations.

In this dissertation I present three empirical cases about cooperation, consultation and participation as forms of inter-ethnic relations from the organizational fields in the society. These cases are examples of what I characterize as “organizing inter-ethnicity”, or organizing people with different ethnic backgrounds around common concerns. Organizing inter-ethnicity is in turn a part of organizing and integrating diversity in society. Drawing on the results of three case studies, I distinguish between opportunities and barriers.

My case studies clearly illustrate that the tensions that influence the patterns of and variation in opportunities and barriers have sources that reach well beyond ethnicity. Tensions between old and new organizations, between working immigrant organizations and refugee organizations, between organizations from same group or between organizations that have conflicts from their members’ countries of origin provide some examples of the difficulties that generate barriers to broad interest constellations between organizations.

Empowering Unaccompanied Children in Everyday Life in a New Country: A Resilience Support Centre in Sweden Evaluated from the Perspective of Program Theory2016In: Revista de Asistenta Sociala, ISSN 1583-0608, Social Work Review, ISSN 1583-0608, Vol. 15, no 2, p. 35-56Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children coming to Sweden are almost all fleeing from violent or threatening situations in their home country and have been sent abroad for their protection. They form a specific growing group of children looked after by local authorities in kinship foster families, network foster families or traditional foster families, as well as in small institutions (HVB-hem) or interim accommodation (Mellanbo) as preparation for independent living. This study explores success factors and impeding factors in a social work intervention for empowering unaccompanied children at a support centre for daily activities in a Swedish municipality from a program-theory perspective. The unaccompanied children in this study are staying in foster families. The data was collected at the centre and with a mixed method design. The results show that unaccompanied children’s relationships with other children improved; they developed their ability to plan and adapt; some of them started to attend regular schools; and traumatic experiences were processed to some extent. All of these can be interpreted as increased empowerment in unaccompanied children’s everyday life. However, there were still significant gaps in participation in clubs and associations and leisure activities, and some children were mentally unwell. Success factors, challenges and risks coexist in a transnational life situation in which most unaccompanied asylum-seeking children continue to interact with their parents and other family members in their home country or another country using modern technology (online parenting).

    Abstract [en]

Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children coming to Sweden are almost all fleeing from violent or threatening situations in their home country and have been sent abroad for their protection. They form a specific growing group of children looked after by local authorities in kinship foster families, network foster families or traditional foster families, as well as in institutions (HVB-hem) or interim accommodation (Mellanbo) as preparation for independent living. This research study explores some daytime activities within social work for unaccompanied children at a support centre, Solitario. The centre existed for three years and some of the activities are now included in regular activities by the local authorities supporting unaccompanied children. The methods used in this study were 12 in-depth interviews with children, in-depth interviews with all staff at the centre and systematic longitudinal assessments performed by staff of 17 children attending the centre in 2009 as well as in 2011. The results show that there is a breakdown of the structures and communities that should support the unaccompanied child in the everyday life. There is not good enough cooperation and coproduction in supporting the best of the child in line with United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC). The basic idea of UN CRC is that the child should be seen as an independent subject and actor. Because of their living situation, unaccompanied children are forced to take action and to do so independent of their microsystem – their nuclear family – or with just a trans-national support in web-based microsystem relationships.
