    Abstract [sv]

Value Chain and its Productivity in the Manufacturing Buiness: A Case Study of Food Partners Group, UK.2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In today’s business world, quality and customer service is what determines the existence of a firm. The success of achieving the named parameters for business growth revolves around the value chain process adopted by the firm. This affirms that Food Partners Group UK indeed is integrating the use of the value chain process in its manufacturing system in their quest to become the leader in sandwich production and distribution in UK. A decrease in the production from the production 2009/2010 to 2010/2011 was observed both visually and statistically (p < 0.05) based on the limited data analysed. However, no statistical difference (p > 0.05) was established between manufactured and sales volumes for 2010/2011. Customer complaints have decreased from a statistically significance (p < 0.05) during the production year of 2009/2010 to no statistical difference perspective (p > 0.05) within the twenty-six week production of 2010/2011. This signifies a positive note on value creation within Food Partners Group UK.

Språkinlärning och undervisningsskultur2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Management of the Free Health Care Initiative in Sierra Leone: Does the Health Workforce have the Right Managerial Competencies?2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

A 2007 WHO report outlined that many least developed countries will not meet the United Nations health related Millennium Development Goals because the health workers did not possess the appropriate managerial competencies. The public health care system in Sierra Leone, a Least Developed Country, is implementing a Free Health Care Initiative targeting pregnant women and children under five years. The focus of this study is to determine if the health workers have the right managerial competencies to implement the Free Health Care Initiative by identifying the health workers perceptions on the relevant managerial competencies and the competency gaps. 39 managerial competencies derived from a similar study in South Africa were analysed in health facilities in the Western Health District of Sierra Leone. The qualitative findings showed that clusters of skills related people management, strategic management, tasks, self-management and health delivery were most important to the health workers and personal competency requirements included computing, staff motivation and communication skills. The findings have broader relevance for stakeholders in the public sector healthcare management and quantitative research is recommended across all 12 Health Districts of Sierra Leone for all level of health workers.

Venture Capital- Backed Investment: Impack on Corporate Governance in Sweden2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Title: VENTURE CAPITAL-BACKED INVESTMENT: IMPACT ON CORPORATE GOVERNANCE IN SWEDEN Author: John Gartchie Gatsi Supervisor: Anders Hederstierna Department: School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology Course: Master’s Thesis in Business Administration, 10 Credits Background and problem discussion: Sweden is one of the small open economies with flourishing venture capital investments. Much research has not been conducted into corporate governance in Sweden when venture capital is involved. I therefore studied how venture capital investments affect corporate governance and performance in Sweden. The research question focuses on board chairperson’s separation from the CEO, independent audit and compensation committees and other board members. Purpose: The study was conducted to understand how corporate governance has developed into the management of Venture Capital backed investments in Sweden since, Sweden ranked third to Venture Capital investment destination currently. The result will add to the limited existing literature on the subject in Sweden with venture capital as the focus. Theory: The study was conducted using both complementarities framework and governed corporation principle in which venture capital firms and their portfolio firms in Sweden benefit from each other. Analysis: Data for the thesis was collected from selected Venture Capitalists who are members of the Swedish Venture Capital Association through simple Open and closed ended self administered questionnaire. Conclusion: Venture capitalists ensure active participation in the portfolio firms through board representation but do not consider appointment of board chair as a means to enhance corporate governance. Separation of the board chair from the CEO of a portfolio firm is a clear characteristic of corporate governance in venture capital backed investments in Sweden. More importance is placed on collective decision making than Audit and Compensation Committees.

Leadership Recruitment by Private Work Agencies: A Case Study Assessing Knowledge of Leadership Traits2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis investigates the leadership recruitment of private work agencies, a sector that has grown significantly in Sweden over the past two decades. Through interviews with leadership recruiters in three firms, desirable and undesirable destructive leadership traits were investigated and the question was addressed of how leadership traits are identified and assessed by recruiters. A distinction was made between desired and undesired leadership traits, both tacit and explicit, and a special focus was given to destructive traits. The results and analysis demonstrated that although there seemed to be a general coherence about the desirability of managerial and intellectual leadership traits, there was no coherence in terms of how to assess undesired destructive leadership traits. Moving beyond the wide categories of managerial and intellectual, an in-depth analysis also showed the existence of an incoherent body of tacit knowledge of desirable leadership traits involved in the recruitment process. The results of the study raised the question whether leadership recruitment could be made more explicit, coherent, and efficient or whether it is inherently difficult and perhaps not relevant to classify leadership traits systematically.

Strategic Partnership within Supply Chain2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background and Problem Discussion: One of the widespread conclusions in supply chain management research is that huge benefits can be achieved if suppliers are involved in the OEM’s product development process as early as possible, since suppliers often possess vital product and process technology leading to significant improvements in product design and new product development process. The issue is a need for a model of supplier selection to support the contribution of suppliers in product development processes; whilst supplier attributes or performance metrics for traditional supplier selection do not seem to include specifications that are usually required in close relationships. What practitioners need in practice, is a simple-to-use methodology with producing logically precise results. Purpose: The purpose of this study is developing a model of supplier selection to support the contribution of suppliers in product development processes, and eventually, developing a strategically integrated supply base for Volvo Powertrain Corporation (VPT). Among the first part of this study, a model of supplier evaluation and selection has been developed, considering attributes and success factors for integration with suppliers, and also examined in VPT with the aims of achieving mutual success in both products and commerce for VPT, as the focal company, and its supply chain members. The second part of this study presents a model to boosting the integrated partnership established on the basis of the first part endeavour. Theory: The first part covers the theories emerges from a large number of stochastic studies concerning hypotheses proofing of relations between diverse aspects of hypothetical influential characteristics of partnerships and its performance. And the second part deals with theory of suppliers association. Analysis: Collected data from suppliers of VPT as well as practitioners is analysed and compared with the academic studies in the first part. Second part, however, deals only with theory since it needs more time and effort which is proposed as prospect studies. Conclusion: The conducted survey shows that two-way communication (or multi-way in more developed situations) and mutual trust are the most vital elements to partnership survival. It has been presented in this effort, and suggested to VPT, that the best practice in this respect is developing the supplier association in a framework of Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle (PDCA) constituted of key suppliers for a particular system and /or subsystem.

Change of entrepreneurial agenda in a core competence context: exploring the transformation from technology focus to market focus2012In: International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing, ISSN 1742-5360, E-ISSN 1742-5379, Vol. 4, no 2, p. 148-167Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The newest small firms – the start-ups in general and the international new ventures (INV) in particular – face major difficulties from the beginning. Not only do they need to bring competitively unique products to a new, highly competitive market, but they also must be successful in convincing customers of their products' benefits. This ultimate small firm test is in fact very similar to the criteria that define the core competence concept. Still, core competence matters have historically been delimited to large, preferably diversified companies. In this paper, we apply core competence theory and entrepreneurship theories on a small firm's empirical context. We concentrate on technology focused INVs and on the change, or transformation, these start-ups must complete in order to adopt a more market-oriented focus. Without the transformation, we argue, the small firm will not be able to expand. The purpose of the paper is to explore parts of the processes changed during the transformation and to enhance our understanding of core competence applicability on small companies. We formulate propositions, empirically guided and theoretically anchored, that describe four different components that facilitate the small firm technology-to-market transformation.

upplevelse av lycka i parförhållande2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Spindeln I (stress) nätet?
    Abstract [sv]

“Who are we as a board?”: Linking board’s identity to board behavior2007Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

I use identity theory to conceptually develop board identities that help us explore and understand board behavior. I develop two specific board identities, which I label board’s organizational identity and board’s contextual identity and develop assertions about board behavior that can be expected based on these identities. A key contention is that each type of identity helps board conceptualize its role holistically and develop appropriate behavior routines, and a lack of a coherent and strong identity leads to poor discharge of board’s duties.

    Entrepreneurs, effectual logic and over-trust2006In: Entrepreneurship: Theory & Practice, ISSN 1042-2587, E-ISSN 1540-6520, Vol. 30, no 4, p. 477-493Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article complements extant literature on entrepreneurship and trust by proposing a model of over-trust (the tendency to trust more than what is warranted) using entrepreneurial characteristics and effectual logic. We trace how entrepreneurs following effectual processes may tend to over-trust. More formally, we propose that specific personality characteristics of the entrepreneur interact with effectual logic to make the entrepreneur more susceptible to over-trust. The proposed model is value neutral in that we do not imply that over-trust has negative consequences for entrepreneurs. In fact, it may be part of the overall risk that entrepreneurs assume in a new venture creation.

THE EFFECT OF DIFFUSION OF FOUNDING FAMILY INFLUENCE AND INSIDER HOLDING ON FIRM VALUE: THE MODERATING EFFECT OF PYRAMIDAL OWNERSHIP2006Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Insights from agency theory and the theory of altruism are used to empirically examine the relationship between founder descendant board membership and the market value of publicly traded firms in Norway, Sweden, and Spain. We argue that both economic incentives and positive altruism drive the board room behavior of persons associated with inherited wealth. Consequently, founder descendant board membership may reduce agency costs in public firms by ensuring the continuity of the founder’s strategic vision. We also hypothesize a non-linear relationship between insider holding and firm value in firms with a descendant board member, arguing that both market discipline and altruistic behavior can be key competitive advantage for family-influenced firms. We also hypothesize an efficiency based argument for a positive influence of pyramid ownership structures on the performance of firms with descendant board membership. This suggests that pyramids favor the creation of firm value in second and later generation family firms. Evidence from 254 firms in the three non-Anglo-American countries largely supports the presented hypotheses.

Stock Investors’ Confidence on Low-Cost and Traditional Airlines in Asia During Financial Crisis 2007-2009: Evidence from Air Asia and Singapore Airlines2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The birth of low-cost carriers (LCC) in recent years, have added a new dimension to the aviation business, especially in Asia. There have been several success stories of these LCCs, compared with conventional full-serviced carriers. Two renowned airlines in Asia, Air Asia and Singapore Airlines have been chosen as our sample companies for the purpose of this research paper. Air Asia will represent the LCC segment, while Singapore Airlines is the proxy for traditional carriers. These two classes of airlines have different business models, which prompt us to find out how each has performed in the recent financial meltdown in 2007/08. In this paper, we will use financial ratios and stock analysis to find out the performance of Air Asia and Singapore Airlines. This quantitative and event methodology approach is apt to provide market participants, such as investors, which segment of the airline industry tend to outperform in time of an economic crisis. Based on our empirical findings, we have found that Air Asia has a better financial performance and is a less risky stock, compared with Singapore Airlines, during such economic downturn. So investors seeking for a more sound investment in such troubled times, may be able to find some gem in LCCs.

Viral Marketing Communication: A study on consumer perception and consumer response2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Advancements in communication technology have given rise to the evolution of a new electronic form of word-of-mouth – Viral marketing communication (VMC). VMC is a form of marketing tactic which encourages individuals to spread a marketing message to others by means of the internet. Currently, VMC is still considered to be at a premature phase of development, therefore information about its behavior and magnitude has yet to be clearly set upon and determined. In addition, limited research has been done on consumer perception and response to such marketing techniques. The objective of this thesis is to explore consumer receptivity, perception and behavioral response to this relatively new marketing strategy. With the use of a structured questionnaire conducted with 236 respondents and in-depth interviews conducted with 15 consumers, we analyzed their response and perception with regards to five different platforms on which viral marketing can take place on the internet, namely 1) E-mail, 2) Video, 3) Blog, 4) Social networks and 5) Forums. Employing a pluralistic approach as our research methodology, both the quantitative and qualitative results worked hand in hand in the analysis of our hypotheses and provided valuable findings regarding the way consumers view and react towards traditional word-of-mouth and VMC. Our main findings showed that 1) VMC helps to raise consumer awareness but does not significantly impact their purchasing decisions, 2) Consumers attach different trust levels to the five platforms of which forums have the highest trust and credibility level, 3) Consumers do not view VMC as spam messages, 4) Consumers are more receptive to VMC which market services compared to products, 5) Negative VMC has a stronger influence on consumers than positive VMC and 6) Monetary incentive is not the strongest motivator in influencing consumers to actively spread messages. With this study, we hope to provide new insights on VMC as a marketing tool from a consumer standpoint and serve as a first step for future research on how VMC can successfully reach out, connect with and influence consumers.

    Abstract [sv]

Do managers that coach become better leaders? An exploration into the relationship between managerial coaching and leader development2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Within managerial coaching research, no-one has specifically explored the relationship between managerial coaching and leader development for the manger. Does the manager derive beneficial outcomes from coaching others? Do these outcomes help develop the manager to be a better leader? The Authors ask What is the relationship between managerial coaching and leader development from the perspective of the coaching manager? In answering, two objectives are addressed. First, establish if there is a relationship. Second, seek to understand the linkage between applying managerial coaching skills and any resulting perceived and/or actual leader development. Design/methodology/approach: A mixed methods embedded research design was applied to a branch of Motorola Solutions in Colombia. For the first objective (embedded), the authors adapted managerial coaching and leader development questionnaires from current models to determine a quantitative correlation between the two activities. For the second objective, paucity of directly relevant research forced an exploratory search of disparate topics to better understand the phenomenon of coaching and its workings. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were developed and administered. Findings: For the first objective, quantitative data supports a strong positive correlation between managerial coaching and leader development. For the second objective, the authors developed a new taxonomy for describing the components of the managerial coaching - leader development relationship. The components consist of outcomes, pathways and mechanisms. The mechanisms identified help explain why and how coaching outcomes occur. Pathways help explain from where outcomes arrive - through the primary act of coaching itself or via secondary routes. With an understanding of pathways and mechanisms, potential outcomes for the manager are more readily identified - for example the circuitous relationship between managerial coaching, employee development and leader development. Originality/value: The aim is to develop a more complete picture of managerial coaching as a method of development for the manager and others. The quantitative method for the correlation between managerial coaching and leader development is original. The proposed taxonomy, used to explain the inner workings and routes of coaching outcomes, is original and provides building blocks for further research. Examples of key facilitating mechanisms for coaching and development are given. The pathways concept is unique within managerial coaching and supports positive leader development outcomes for the manager, not only from superiors, but from oneself and from those coached.

Skapa och leverera kundvärde i ett teknikkonsultföretag /2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The increased specialisation and complexity in products and services has created the need for Swedish companies to focus more on their core businesses. This has resulted in them opting to buy services and products that lie outside of their core business from consultancy businesses or other types of suppliers. When companies describe their offers in internal and external marketing it is done often in terms of company or service attributes that are not based on customer value or offered value for the customer. The reason for this is that companies have not adapted their services to the different needs of their customers. As a result of this, they run the risk of offering the same services as their competitors and communicate values that the customers either do not understand or experience as value adding. By using the theory on the data collection from the case company we have an understanding and shown how the customer values can be developed from a service company’s internal and external prerequisites and competitive advantages. Our belief is that valuation and development of customer values shall always be based around the individual customer’s requirements. This can be done when the segment that responds positively on the company’s offer can be found and targeted. By focusing on this segment that has been found the offer can be differentiated in such a way the experienced value for the customer can be maximised.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Investigate and examine industry practice with regards to evaluation of process improvement, identification of measures and methods for success evaluations. The main reasoning is to use empirical data from industry, data from academia and research as input for suggesting proposals for improvement and discussion new avenues for future research in a field not addressed by e.g. traditional investment theory or marketing research. Method: Interviews were used and several data sources were elicited to gather empirical data. Literature surveys complemented this. Ultimately a triangulation approach was adopted to gradually and continuously compare and identify the chasms between academia and the reality and needs of industry. Results: The results can be described in three parts. First, there is a empirical investigation showing what measures and models are used in industry. These are discussed and put against literature (the academic view) in both the software engineering field, but relevant research is also scrutinized in business management field, e.g. investment theory. The second contribution is the concrete proposal of three methods for evaluating process improvement success. The first two of these are actually useable and take notice of the limitations identified in industry through the empirical investigation, i.e. no assumptions and theoretical models are presented in the first part of the proposal. The second part of the proposal is designed to present an outlook of the overall potential, provoking a discussion and ultimately leading out to a conclusion of future research needed in the field.

Betydelsen av kompetensutveckling inom olika verksamheter2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose is to create understanding for the meaning of competence development so the operation can change. Finding needs of competence development and compare their correspondence with the operation’s goals can be a start of right competence on the right place. An operation’s change depends on its use of different competences. Evaluating might be a chance for the operation to estimate their way towards changing The study is based on the hermeneutic tradition since my interest is to study the meaning in competence development and create understanding. By using interview, the interviewee can tell about their different experiences. In this study has six interviews been made with people who works with competence development in six different operations. The opportunity to make changes depends on their work with finding needs of competence, tries to fill them and which result they try to attain. The result of competence development is the co-workers responsibility though they have the will and ability to take action to develop competence. The result appear that strategic work with competence development, the different investment in competence development and their meaning for the operation is a question of matter for what can be changed and how operations can meet changes.

Helgar ändamålet medlen: Kvalitativ undersökning om upplevelsen av motivation i förändring.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

How can Knowledge Management be integrated into the Culture of Organizations: The Case of Investment Brokers2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Abstract Knowledge Management (KM) in not a new phenomenon, but is, instead a concept that dates back to ancient philosophy, and which gained significance in the social and psychological sciences in the 1950s. The use of KM in business is however more recent, emerging in the 1980s, (Grover & Davenport, 2001). Knowledge is the key to an organization’s performance; hence its methodical distribution assures “innovation, non-duplication of efforts and a competitive edge,” (Dubrin, 2004, p. 415). Very often within organizations, there are knowledgeable individuals, (who through their experiences and associations) possess informal knowledge which is resident only in their minds. This knowledge is used in the efficient and effective execution of their daily functions. However, research has shown that organizations often face serious problems when these individuals leave, as this informal information goes with them, often resulting in instability and loss of income to companies (Alavi & Leidner, 2001). It is common practice for these knowledgeable employees to be reluctant to share their knowledge, as their know-how gives them a competitive advantage, and provides them with a certain level of power and recognition. Hence, knowledgeable employees tend to hoard their informal knowledge (De Long & Fahey, 2000). It is therefore incumbent on organizations to create environments within which this informal knowledge may not only be shared, but also documented, forming a part of the policies and procedures, and incorporated in the production of goods and services. This may be achieved by way of organizational culture. Organizational Culture, simply put, is “how things are done around here” (Goffe & Jones, 1998). It speaks to the norms, values and standards in a company, written or un-written which holds the company together, and which distinguishes that company from other businesses. It is organizational culture that assists in identifying informal knowledge. Organizational culture also promotes the need for conversion of this formally documented knowledge to be shared in the interest of innovation, profitability, and posterity. Despite its numerous known advantages, and its potential for the promotion of growth and development, organizational culture could be the greatest hindrance to the transfer of knowledge in an organization, (Watson, 1998). Consequently, it is in the best interest of organizations to foster a culture that is accommodating to the integration of KM. The question of what constitutes knowledge management and organizational culture, the role and importance of these paradigms, and how they may be integrated, are the focus of this thesis. Objectives The research question, How can KM be Integrated into Organizational Culture - The Case of Investment Brokers, incorporated a case study to explore and collect data on KM, using the company’s documentation, observations and open-ended questions. The research investigated the culture of the organization being explored using Delong & Fahey (2000) four frameworks of culture. This qualitative approach required direct collaboration with the individuals involved in the study, and facilitated an examination of the physical environment of the company, as well as the cultural factors which impact KM. Methods John Creswell (2003) describes the method of “open-ended questions interview data, observation data, and document data” as qualitative, (Creswell, 2003, p. 17). These approaches were used to gather information on the company being reviewed. The company’s documentation – policies and procedures as is listed in Appendix D, were extensively reviewed, and open-ended questions, and observations, (other sources of evidence) were used to validate the findings. Yin (2003) recommends six illustrative structures for composing case studies, namely, Linear-analytic, Comparative, Chronological, Theory building, Suspense, and Unsequenced. I have chosen the Linear-analytical structure, that explains the phenomenon being investigated, the methodology used in this activity, and the findings and conclusions. Major Findings Delong & Fahey (2000) Four Frameworks linking culture and knowledge was used to ‘match’ the practices at the company under review, to ascertain if the theories hold true in this organization. In analyzing and interpreting the data, the information was arranged and classified into groups to establish any pattern that may exist in the data, after which the conclusions were drawn. Eight of 13 employees were questioned, and review of documentation and observation revealed that the cultural framework used to conduct the research was evident at the company studied. The faith-based, bureaucratic, conservative culture at Investment Brokers influences the knowledge that is resident in the organization, leading to the conclusion that culture not only determines the level of knowledge, its creation and adoption, but also engenders the structure for teamwork and associations between divergent levels of knowledge.

Barns välmående och föräldrars stress2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Preschool belongs to Lpo-94. School readiness can interprets in different kind of aspects, then you can not found any goals to reach in Lpo- 94 for the pre-school, which preschool teachers can relay to. There are comprehensive goals for the nine-year school in Lpo- 94, about which knowledge the student should have for the fifth grade. Purpose of the studie is to examine preschool teachers understanding of the phenomenon school readiness. Qualitative interviews by preschool teachers in south and middle of Sweden has been carried out and a hermeneutic analyse has been used for a deeper understanding of pre-school teachers interprets of school readiness. It has been clear in the results that common for the pre-school teachers are that they seen school readiness from a comprehensive view which can be divided in three aspects, which is socially skills, cognitive skills and motoric skills. Common for the pre-school teachers are also that they try to integrate socially, cognitive and motoric knowledge whit the plying, from the Lpo -94 goals, which is leading to school readiness. The pre-school teachers use Lpo-94 when they plan the goal, but same of the teachers even use Lpfö-98, when the pedagogic of playing is more agreement whit the preschools learning by playing.

Intranät 2.0: Intranätsansvarigas uppfattningar av interaktivitet på intranät2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

Nyckelord: Smak-faktorer. Idrottsprestationer. Arbetsprestationer. Principal komponent analys.

Small Family Firms in Sweden: Analysis of Factors Determining Long Term Survival2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Family firms span from small where the founder is the only person in the company to large corporations that are listed at the stock exchange. Moreover, they differ culturally depending on the home country of the respective firm. However, what all family firms have in common is that they constitute a large part of the total amount of firms in the world providing employment opportunities and thus contributing to the welfare of countries. This fact makes family firms a highly interesting field of research. On the one hand family firms have many competitive advantages over other firms such as majority control of shares allowing fast decisions as well as customer and long-term orientation. On the other hand family firms face difficulties that non-family firms do not. One of the most common problems of family firms is its long-term survival which can be hindered by a lack of family members that can and want to take over, control issues due to family members who sold their shares, insufficient innovation, growth or profitability. That problem leads to the two main questions which will be analyzed in this thesis: a.) “Why do many small Swedish family firms often not survive in the long run?” b.) “What can be done to increase the survival rate of small family firms in a long term perspective?” Past and current research focused a lot on large family firms even though companies with less than 50 employees constitute approximately 96 percent of all firms in Sweden. Therefore, the thesis concentrates on small family firms in Sweden. Data needed for the analysis in order to answer the questions stated above have been gathered by a survey followed up by an interview to test and compliment the results of the survey. The results of the survey indicate that the main reason why small family firms in Sweden often do not survive in the long run is because they do not want to. Reasons why they were not interested in long-term survival several state that there are no relatives that can take-over. Based on the results of the survey an attempt to answer the question what can be done to increase the survival rate was as follows: For the family firms not interested in succession the benefits of long-term survival such as better products and services, wealth for owners, jobs and tax income for society were presented. For the ones interested in succession but facing difficulties recommendations such as the introduction of governance mechanisms were suggested. To test and compliment the results from the survey a telephone interview was performed with a few of the survey respondents get more in-depth information and opinions of the small family firms. The results of the interview validate the results of the survey.

E-handel: En studie kring utvecklingen av e-handeln i Sverige med inriktning på möbelbranschen.2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Hyperkonkurrens: En studie i tillverkningsindustrin2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

E-mail is a non-verbal text based communication tool that today is used widely in organizations and perhaps because of its familiarity seen as just a tool with no complications. Can other ingredients affect the communication except the obvious missing non-verbal cues? The main purpose of this thesis was to examine how leaders experience their communication between the different public administrations, but also to see if the text based communication, in particular e-mail, and was affected by organizational culture and emotions. Both a questionnaire, interviews and document analysis was used at a “Samordningsförbund” where the study was performed. The results indicated in general good communication between the individuals but also that emotions, personality and organizational culture can have an effect on communication and thus should be taken a more serious interest both in the actual “samordningsförbund” and also in further research, particularly e-mail in association with emotions and different personalities.

Säkert lärande? Incidentutredningar inom flygtrafikledning2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Motivating knowledge workers2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The emergence of a knowledge based economy facilitated by the globalisation has changed the rules of the game for many organisations. The most valuable assets within many organisations are no longer the physical resources but the knowledge capital. In contrary to the era of industrialisation, these assets are no longer owned and controlled by the companies but by the employees. The largest challenge for management in the knowledge economy is the need to increase the productivity of the knowledge workers. The most effective approach to increase knowledge worker productivity is by improving their level of motivation. The question for how to best motivate people in an organisation is neither new nor does it have a single clear answer. To create a situation characterised by satisfaction and motivation, focus should be on the motivator, the factors with the potential of creating long time sustainable results. Factors influencing motivation can be described as either intrinsic or extrinsic relating to their nature of effect. Traditionally, most organisations have been focusing on extrinsic motivators such as monetary incentives to increase motivation. Intrinsic motivators include factors relating to the work itself as autonomy, mastery and purpose. This study has included a survey where 355 knowledge workers have ranked 29 different motivational factors. The results show the top five factors all are typical intrinsic factors which indicate employees’ true commitment and motivation originates in the intrinsic nature of the task being performed. Another important finding from this study is each of the factors investigated can play a role in order to motivate the individuals in a group of knowledge workers. As a result of that insight, all organisations with the aim to increase knowledge worker productivity have to take the time to find out how to best motivate each single employee. One way for an organisation to increase individual employee motivation is to start paying attention to personal interests and try to direct different work tasks in accordance with that.

The progress of e-Government in Iran2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis intends to examine the progress of e-government in Iran and its plans towards practices in the field of e-government as well as comparing related developments with some other developing countries. A literature review has been performed for the purpose of this study, which has involved a review and synthesis results from scientific publications. The obtained results show that the necessity of utilizing the new electronic, information, and communication technologies, the movement toward implementation of e-government in Iran has recently received the attention of the authorities and policy makers. The premise of the work is set around the fact that the e-government is a momentous opportunity for developing countries like Iran to improve and streamline their government’s operations, provide breakthrough performance, and reduce their existing gaps with developed countries. 1 The chosen method was a qualitative case study method which was achieved by conducting of telephone interview (with a senior official)2 who is namely involved in e-government projects in Iran and a systematic survey of relevant literature using the electronics databases such as Elin@Blekinge and other valuable information on the Internet by using the search tool Google as the major source of data. The paper follows a literature study approach for developing the concept of excellent e-government in Iran. It first theoretically differentiates between e-government in Iran and some other developing countries and describes the status of e-government in developing countries which describes by case studies. It then differentiates between the two approaches to e-governance and e-government. 1 Sharifi, H., Zarei, B. (2004) 2 Ashrafologhalaeia ,A

    Abstract [sv]

The focus of this study is on the salary negotiation discussion and the emotions that arise before, during and after the discussion and how they are handled cognitively. The study also explores how respondents perceive the general working conditions in order to compare their experiences of the daily work with their experiences of the salary negotiation discussion. This is an inductive exploratory study using semi-structured interviews that took place with six female respondents who are working in an authority. Phenomenology is used as a research approach because it is the respondents' experiences that are of interest. The answers have been processed by using thematic analysis. The results showed that there were many negative emotions, such as anxiety and frustration that were experienced in the salary negotiation discussion while the daily work conditions were perceived as more positive.

Lönesättande samtal: samspelet mellan medarbetare och ledare2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The backgrounds of this study are my own thoughts on how the salary negotiation discussions in the workplace really work because they now have become common in the workplace. The purpose of this study is to investigate how communication is handled during a salary negotiation discussion, for both employees and managers and to develop awareness of the importance of communication influence on the interaction in the salary negotiation discussion. The research question has been how employees and managers perceive the interactions during the conversation, so the socio-cultural theory has been used together with other communication concepts and theories. The study had a phenomenological approach to obtain the respondents’ subjective experiences of the interaction in the salary negotiation discussions. The method which was used was an open interview with an interview guide which contained a number of different themes that the respondents had to relate to. The different themes were verbal communication, nonverbal communication, feedback, greeting and feelings. The results showed that there was an interaction, but also that it is important to have developed concepts that facilitate conversations and interactions.

Hatkärlek. Hur Facebook påverkar oss i vår vardag.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Facebook has opened up a brand new way to communicate. Most people have an opinion about it, whether they are using the service or not. Different people using Facebook in different ways. The aim with the study is to investigate how the informants are feeling, how the use of Facebook is affecting them in their daily lives. To conduct the study, active observations and qualitative interviews were used, with six Facebook users. The observations studied what informants were actually doing on Facebook, and in the interviews they got the chance to explain how Facebook influence them. The result shows that the informants had some kind of love – hate relationship to Facebook, they felt annoyed but at the same time they could not stay away from Facebook, which is one of the most important conclusions of the study. The informants saw through their friends positive updates, which can be connected to Goffman´s theatrical metaphor, and peoples way of playing different roles in front of their public. Another conclusion is that they see Facebook as a good way to keep in touch with friends, but at the same time they feel stressed because they are logging on too often, to not miss out on the flow of news.

Interdependency of Culture, Strategy and Management Control Systems in an R&D Context2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Organisational culture, strategy and management control systems have all been subjects of much discussion and many books and papers have been written on these topics. What is less well-established is how they interact with and influence one another, the investigation of which is the purpose of this thesis. Based on previous research, the authors develop a theoretical model based on aspects of organisational culture, strategy formulations and management control systems. This model is tested within the R & D department of Sandvik Coromant AB, a part of the Sandvik AB Group. This is conducted by means of deep interviews with key managers, as well as through a survey targeted at non-managerial personnel. The authors also review internal documentation. To complement more conventional methods, they investigate how material culture and materialities influence uphold and prohibit cultural development. The findings indicate clear correlations between organisational culture, strategy and management control systems. This is also reflected and conserved in materialities and changes thereof. Due to the esteemed age of our case company, many cultural practices can be traced over a long period of time, being both the root cause of their present success, but potentially also a stumbling block for future organisational development. The findings also indicate that some strands within the culture of the case company may be at odds with one another, possibly resulting in interference with business operations. The theoretical model, which is best viewed as preliminary, could serve as point of departure for future research. It could be tested within additional organisations, resulting in a broader scope and a more generally applicable model. It could also be expanded to include market conditions and surrounding culture, regional or national, in order to add additional depth. Finally, the importance of leaders in shaping, changing and upholding organisational culture could be further explored, particularly in regards to the active use of materialities.

Overcoming Organisational Challenges related to Agile Project Management Adoption2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

For the past few years, Agile methodologies have been hailed as the silver bullet which will successfully address the high project failure rate. Many organisations have been using a traditional project management methodology for years and are now either considering or in the progress of introducing a more agile approach as a substitute for the more rigid, inflexible and control oriented traditional methodologies. Potential benefits include, but are not limited to, faster return on investment, better products/services, and higher customer satisfaction. Often however, this leads to a painful introduction because employees are uncomfortable with the drastic changes Agile methods impose or because there is internal resistance to change, and in many cases the expected increase in project efficiency does not occur. The purpose of this thesis was to determine the perceived challenges related to organisational adaptation to agile project management and to develop a conceptual model of best practices to help guide agile adaptation. Research and data collection was performed through a review of relevant literature within both traditional and agile methods, principles and techniques, along with papers on organisational transformation and case studies and in parallel, interviews with experts and practitioners in the field. Data analysis was performed in two phases: the literature review helped us find data in relevant project management fields and through a subset of the Burke-Litwin organisational change model extract challenges and questions, and in the second phase the outcome of interviews based on these questions was fed back through the change model, analysed and compared with the original data. Some of the main findings of this thesis are: - Adaptation to an environment with less structure and control is often a hard challenge, but it can be overcome with proper guidance and the support of a high-level internal sponsor who champions the agile vision top down. - The change in management style from the traditional „command and control‟ to self-regulation is a challenge for former project managers, who must evolve into project facilitators. - For agile adaptation to be successful, it should be implemented company-wide, and not in for instance a single department.

Kunskapspåverkande omständigheter: En jämförelse mellan privat och offentlig sektor2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
