    Integrating Humanities Scholarship within the Science of Global Environmental Change: The example of Inscribing Environmental Memory in the Icelandic Sagas (IEM), an IHOPE case study2014Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    Inscribing Environmental Memory in the Icelandic Sagas (IEM) is a major interdisciplinary research initiative examining environmental memory in the medieval Icelandic sagas. The initiative brings together teams of historians, literary scholars, archaeologists and geographers, as well as specialists in environmental sciences and medieval studies, to investigate long-term human ecodynamics and environmental change from the period of Iceland’s settlement in the Viking Age (AD 874-930) through the so-called Saga Age of the early and late medieval periods, and well into the long period of steady cooling in the Northern hemisphere popularly known as the Little Ice Age (AD 1350-1850). In her 1994 volume inaugurating the field of historical ecology Carole Crumley argued in favor of a “longitudinal” approach to the study of longue durée human ecodynamics. This approach takes a region as the focus for study and examines changing human-landscape-climate interactions through time in that particular place. IEM involves multiple frames of inquiry that are distinct yet cross-referential. Environmental change in Iceland during the late Iron Age and medieval period is investigated by physical environmental sciences. Just how known processes of environmental change and adaptation may have shaped medieval Icelandic sagas and their socio-environmental preoccupations is of great interest, yet just as interesting are other questions concerning how these sagas may in turn have shaped understandings of the past, cultural foundation narratives, environmental lore, local ecological knowledge etc. Enlisting environmental sciences and humanities scholarship in the common aim of framing and thereby better understanding nature, the IEM initiative excludes nothing as “post- interesting” or “pre-interesting.” Understanding Viking Age first settlement processes informs understanding of 18th century responses to climate change, and 19th century resource use informs understanding of archaeological patterns visible at first settlement a millennium earlier. There is much to gain from looking at pathways (and their divergences) from both ends, and a long millennial scale perspective is one of the key contributions that the study of past “completed experiments in human ecodynamics” can make to attempts to achieve future sustainability. IEM is a case study of the Integrated History and future of People on Earth initiative (IHOPE) led by the international project AIMES (Analysis, Integration and Modeling of the Earth System), a core project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme; the initiative is co-sponsored by PAGES (Past Global Changes) and IHDP (The International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change). This talk brings together two of the main coordinators from IEM’s sponsoring organizations, NIES and NABO, to reflect on the particular challenges, innovations and advances anticipated in this unprecedented undertaking of integrated science and scholarship, a new model for the scientific framing of nature.

    People in Between: Ethncity and Material Identity, a New Approach to Deconstructed Concepts2009Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)

    In questions concerning ethnicity and cultural identity in prehistory, there is a great divide between the conclusions maintained on a theoretical level of discussion and the interpretations given to material remains, when these theories are practiced on the archaeological material. Inherited scientific and political structures, usage and ideas contribute to our understanding of ethnicity and the everyday use of the concept, and influence archaeological interpretations. By illuminating these inherited preconceptions, they can be deconstructed, and a workable definition of the concepts found. A categorical approach to material culture needs to be abandoned, along with the hope of identifying ethnic groups in an archaeological material. Analyses should instead concentrate on the concept of ethnicity, as a relational, situational social identity created in the prehistoric present.

    The discussion is here approached through case studies set in different contextual situations, displaying great chronological, geographical and political variation, but also revealing some obvious points of contact. Scientific, materialistic, colonial and national perceptions of ethnic groups and ethnicity are penetrated in the case studies of the Varangians in 8th to 10th century Russia, the history of the Métis in Canada from the 18th century till today, and the Swedish speaking population on the island of Ruhnu outside Estonia at the turn of the 20th century. The Varangians are part of the Russian national myth of origin, and have been understood as a Scandinavian people, especially by Scandinavian researchers. Archaeological material of Scandinavian character dating to between the 8th and 11th centuries confirms intense interaction between Russia and Scandinavia in this time period. The Métis trace their roots back to the fur trade era and the encounter between Indian and European traders. Since 1982, they have been recognised as an indigenous people of Canada. The population of Runö was documented as Swedish speaking in the Middle Ages. They were discovered by Swedish ethnography in the 19th century, and interpreted as archaic Swedish. As a consequence of this narrative, the population was evacuated to Sweden in almost its entirety during the Second World War.

    In these cases, scientific, political and ideological aspects of social practice interface with the everyday practices in communities and influence the outward perception of that group's identity, as well as the self-perception within the community. It can be concluded that the ideological setting is equally important to a historical development as are economic or geographical circumstances. The final chapter introduces an alternative interpretation to the early Scandinavian towns as a disappearing phenomenon towards the end of the 10th century, deduced from the conclusions made in the previous case studies.

    Cross-Border Commemorations: Celebrating Swedish Settlement in America2018Bok (Fagfellevurdert)

    The histories of colonial settlement in America are generally presented as uniquely national stories. Yet because these histories involved settlers who crossed oceans, they are inherently transnational and have been important for different groups throughout the world. To understand how settlement histories are used to promote social, political, and commercial relations across national borders, Adam Hjorthén explores the little-known phenomenon of cross-border commemorations.

    Focusing on two celebrations of Swedish settlement in America―the 1938 New Sweden Tercentenary and the 1948 Swedish Pioneer Centennial―Hjorthén examines a wide variety of sources to demonstrate how cultural leaders, politicians, and businessmen used these events to promote international relations between the United States and Sweden during times of great geopolitical transformation. Cross-Border Commemorations argues that scholarship on public commemoration should expand beyond national borders and engage the shared and contested meanings of history across local, national, and transnational contexts.

    Kulturmiljövårdens hantering av de gröna miljöerna har länge varit bristfällig, vilket Visby vallgravar utgör exempel på. Park­området som sträcker sig utmed ringmuren från norr till söder ger idag ett till viss del naturpräglat intryck trots att det under slutet av 1800-talet genomgick omfattande planteringar och därmed i hög grad är medvetet gestaltat. Detta har medfört att kun­skapen om varför vallgravarna ser ut som de gör är otillräcklig. När Visby togs upp på UNESCO:s världsarvslista 1995 pekades vallgravarna ut som buffertzon. På ett kontrasterande sätt har man från kommunal sida på senare år utvecklat planer för exploa­tering både i och nära inpå vallgravsområdet.

    Undersökningen har syftat till att med Visby som exempel belysa hur gröna kulturmiljöer kan komma att tolkas på olika sätt när vi väljer att tillskriva dem särskilda tidslager och därmed bortse från andra. Dessutom har syftet varit att syna hur buffert­zonskonceptet applicerats i den kommunala planeringen och på detta sätt lyfta fallet till ett internationellt perspektiv.

    Undersökningen har visat på att Planteringsgillets verksamhet till stor del format dagens vallgravsområde. Samtidigt har histo­riens bristande förvaltning tillsammans med senare års ”medeltidifiering” lett till att fokus riktats bort från senare historia och snarare koncentrerats till medeltiden. I relation till den medeltida världsarvsstaden och ringmuren har vallgravarna kommit att mer utgöra en kuliss än en del av kulturarvet. Buffertzonskonceptet har visats möta problem i implementering i nationell lagstift­ning vilket är ett av skälen till ett avvaktande förhållningssätt till området i världsarvsfrågan. Paradoxala motsättningar i form av exploateringsplaner och en vilja att utöka och tydliggöra världsarvet är ett av resultaten som uppvisat ett behov av att öka kun­skapen och på ett tydligare sätt säkra världsarvets och vallgravarnas fortlevnad.

    Theme parks and other themed environments commonly evoke stories about the past in order to provide their customers with enjoyable experiences. The underlying visions of the past can easily be dismissed as creative fiction drawing on common stereotypes. Usually, these visions are only very loosely related either to historical accounts based on academic research or to genuine cultural heritage. However, rather than dwelling on anachronisms in theme parks, I am interested in this paper in exploring discernible connections between cultural heritage and artificiality, authenticity and theming. Even cultural heritage needs to evoke stories about the past to provide visitors with enjoyable experiences. I argue that an important precondition for that to succeed is not the historical age of an observed object but its pastness. Pastness denotes the perceived quality that a given object is of the past. Pastness is not immanent in an object but may result from the object’s appearance (e.g. patina), its context (e.g. in a museum), or its correspondence with preconceived expectations among the audience. Therefore, pastness can – and indeed must – be designed and managed. There are thus important lessons to be learned from successful theme parks for cultural heritage management. I conclude by speculating about the social significance of fictitious heritage in themed environments.

    This article argues for a modified constructivist approach to archaeological object authenticity which takes the object’s materiality seriously. This is accomplished by defining authenticity not in relation to the age of an object but to its age-value, i.e., the quality or condition of being (of the) past—its pastness. Pastness is the result of a particular perception or experience. It derives from, among others, material clues indicating wear and tear, decay, and disintegration. These material clues, and thus the presence of pastness, can be created entirely in the present.

    Abstract [en]

    This anthology utilizes the concept of encounters to investigate the linked constructions of identity and difference in modern European history. The articles use representations of others to ask basic questions about identity: how is the encountered group described, and what does this description say about the observer and about the cultural group and discourse that the observer represents?

    The studies span 150 years and a wide geographical area (Germany, the U.S., Sweden and Russia). Importantly, they also demonstrate how descriptions of the “other” vary according to the media used. The form in which the representation is placed – in novels, travel literature, web sites, newspapers or World Fairs – affects the way in which its messages on identity and otherness are conceptualised and conveyed. These articles, thus, not only present insights into how the discourses of, e.g., race, Orientalism, educational, gender and class hierarchies affect concepts of “us and the others”. They also show how the medium functions as an integral part of that message.

    The book is written by a range of authors ranging from advanced students to professors. It is, accordingly, aimed not only at experts in the field, but also those starting out in identity and cultural studies – serving both as a textbook, and as a work for seasoned scholars looking for recent and innovative investigations in the field of identity studies.

    Today nearly the entire adult population in Sweden uses a digital BankID for more purposes than only financial ones. Issuing identity documents is commonly perceived as a task for state authorities, but in Swedish society banks have played a dominant role as identificators. The first contribution of this article is that it explains this unique emergence of bank identity and traces the historical roots of a financial identification society to the mid-1960s. Banks started issuing standardized identity cards as a complement to the new system of paying salaries and wages by direct deposit to checking accounts, and these cards eventually became quasi-official identity documents. The Swedish story thus contrasts the scholarship on identification and state control. By treating identity as both a socio-cultural category and a materialization of a technology of control, I argue that the formalization of official identity documents for everyday use was intertwined with the creation of new financial identities. The introduction and general distribution of ID cards were parts of a process whereby wage earners became financial consumers, and the banks transformed themselves into retail companies. My second contribution therefore relates to the scholarly narrative on the financialization of everyday life since the 1980s. While the mass move to financial identification in Sweden, highlighted in this article, certainly fits the content of this narrative, it questions its chronology.

    The paper explores cultural historical and gender aspects of the financialisation of everyday life through a case study of an extensive Swedish bank campaign in the 1960s targeting women. I analyse the so called Golden Everyday conferences (1961-1969) as representations of popular finance and I focus on two questions: firstly how the financial identities for a broad population were constructed and enacted; and secondly, which role the bank adopted in relation to its (presumptive) clients. The development of retail banking has been roughly outlined in historical studies of banking, but the challenge faced by the banks, and their strategies for entangling finances in everyday practices has not been looked upon in detail. Through the case of the Golden Everyday conferences I argue that in he 1960s a domestication of banks occurred intertwined with the “bancarisation of households” described in the history and sociology of banking.

    I highlight how emotionality, familiarity and references to consumer skills were used to domesticate a new kind of popular banking. The conferences attempted to reconcile the “hostile worlds” of economy and intimacy. They furthermore framed everyday finance by a ‘housewifely’, consumerist and familiar discourse, which reinforced the bank’s new role in managing personal finance on an everyday basis. This new line was made practically possible by the introduction of a system of direct deposits and cheque accounts for salaries and wages, but the new practices were to be extended also to those who did not lift own salaries and even more importantly needed to be rooted in a domestic context – for both women and men. The financial identity that came into being in the Golden Everyday conferences differed from the identities emphasised by scholars of financialisation of everyday life or those writing about popular finance. The new clients of the Swedish bank, might very well have been engaged in investing, saving or borrowing, but they were addressed here as consumers of financial products. They were supposed to choose and buy in the “department store of finances”.

    The bank certainly represented itself as a “department store” of finances. At the same time it also institutionalised the expertise about family economics/personal finances, an expert knowledge that previously belonged to many different governmental and non-profit organisations. Thereby the topics of sharing within the family were discussed in the same context as shareholding.

    This study aims to analyse the mediation of cultural memory in Christopher Nolan’s newest production Dunkirk. Furthermore, the audiences are supposed to identify and create meaning from cultural memories they have not inherited. This problem will therefore be analysed in relation to the mediation of cultural memory. A critical discourse analysis will mark the cornerstone of a methodical analysis model, followed by a semiotic textual analysis. Both the discourse and semiotic analysis will be preceded by a socio historical theory of contemporary ideology.   

    Dunkirk assumes the form of a popular-cultural text itself, and will therefore be analysed as such. With the help of cultural-historical concepts such as identity creation and collective, cultural and prosthetic memory the study in question will supply a relevant contribution through analysis and result. The result itself concluded that Nolan dedicated his depiction of the events at Dunkerque to the people and civilians. 

    Through heavily romanticised depictions of civilian efforts, small boats in focus, and the intimate narratives of the soldiers’ struggles, the identification easily cements itself in the audience through sheer emotional investment with the characters and the intricate social hierarchies they produce through isolation and exclusion. In relation to mediating a cultural memory through popular-culture film, these possibilities of identification also create possibilities of prosthetic memories to develop, through which audiences undertake cultural memories they are not entitled to by heritage.

    Abstract [en]

    It is well known that cultural heritage conservation is a part of contemporary society and as such mirrors contemporary society’s values. In this study I have examined how this is expressed in the way cultural heritage has been represented at Gamla Uppsala, using our current zeitgeist as a culture of consumption as a starting point. The results show that antiquarian efforts at this site have contributed to creating a heritage site on display that emanates authenticity and clarity, which in this study is tied to the current spirit of consumerism. The results also show that the site museum’s narratives to some extent offer an alternative to a culture of consumption, by providing narratives about the site through time, narratives that are multifaceted and require an effort to absorb.

    How can revealing the past at historic sites benefit our society? This question has been discussed recurrently over the years within heritage studies and heritage practices; the suggested answers are many. This text analyses what has been remembered and forgotten in an urban development process, when the previously industrial area of Lomma Eternit in south Sweden was turned into a luxury residential area. The result shows that the visualization of industrial heritage as a result of the cultural heritage practise at the site, have created a place which today is highly appreciated, but is also conflict generating.

    In this paper we take stock of how cultural heritage and the future are interconnected, from a largely archaeological perspective. We indicate which future trends can be identified that heritage sector strategies will need to adjust to. We also discuss some specialcategories of cultural heritage that in all likelihood will be of the distant future, whether we like it or not. We review how the heritage sector has failed to give sufficient attention to future issues and argue that this short-coming should be remedied as soon as possible. We would like to draw attention to the fact that the heritage sector lacks a thorough engagement with questions concerning the future benefits of cultural heritage and thus concerning the appropriateness of present-day practices and policies in heritage management.

    This article examines the multiplayer environment that has become a central part of most competitive First Person Military Shooter (FMPS) franchises, including Battlefield and Call of Duty. While framed by a narrative, multiplayer games involve most directly a repeated negotiation of a particular space informed by certain rules. When narrative fades into the background the way that space is imagined and produced in the game becomes crucial. The ideological import of the game now relies on the nature of the ludic space where the gamer is placed and which he or she interacts with. With this in mind, the article explores the Battlefield 3 multiplayer map Grand Bazaar. Like some other Battlefield 3 maps, Grand Bazaar exists also as an actual place and is thus not only an imaginary ludic territory. To discuss the connection between this map, the real place and the way that the Middle East is often imagined in Western discourse, the investigation will make use of Sybille Lammes’ notion of “magic nodes” (Lammes, 2008) - a concept that stresses the ways in which ludic spaces are connected to the social and actual world - and Josh Smicker’s contention that First Person Military Shooter games increasingly produce “proleptic” or anticipatory warfare scenarios. The conclusion of the article is that the map Grand Bazaar is imagined as a permanent battleground and that the creation of such a ludic space is part of the “combat against futurity” that this genre of games often engages in.

    “You’re a terrorist, that’s why I’m doing it to you”: Torture and Discipline in Zero Dark Thirty2014Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    The introduction to Foucault’s study Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison describes the public execution of Robert-François Damiens who in 1757 attempted to assassinate King Louis XV of France. Foucault describes how Damiens had the flesh of his body torn from his chest, arms and legs with red-hot pinchers, how sulphur, lead and boiling oil was poured into his wounds, and how his body was drawn apart by four horses assisted by his executioner, until only his dismembered torso remained to be burnt at the stake.

     

    Foucault’s revolutionary thesis is that in the decades that follow, discipline ceased to be a public spectacle. While this tremendously important observation has revolutionized our understanding of the operations of discourse, power and institutions in our society, it has become increasingly obvious that the practices Foucault describes as essentially pre-modern in fact never disappeared. Steven Pierce and Anupama Rao show in Discipline and the Other Body (2006) that torture was routinely used to discipline the subaltern in the European colonies during the nineteenth century. In reconstruction US, black Americans were tortured and mutilated, sometimes in front of crowds of thousands, in ways that directly recall the treatment of Damiens in 1757. In 2004, images from the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq were made public and circulated in the press, on television and on the Internet.

     

    From this perspective, it is not strange that torture has retained a central position in literature and film concerned with the meeting between the (imperial) state and its enemies. In Rudyard Kipling’s 1890 short story “The Mark of the Beast,” the narrator applies red-hot iron to the strung-up body of a literally faceless Indian leper who has cursed one of his friends. In D. W. Griffith’s racist epic Birth of a Nation (1915), the freedman Gus is castrated (in an eventually censored scene) and then murdered by the budding Ku Klux Klan for desiring a white woman.

     

    With this history in mind, the present paper examines Katherine Bigelow’s controversial movie Zero Dark Thirty. Torture is a brutal practice in Bigelow’s movie, but within the dramatic structure of the film, which opens with authentic sound recordings from the World Trade Centre and ends with the retributive killing of Osama bin Laden, it comes across as a deplorable but essential tool for justice. At the same time, the film often makes it clear, as in the title to this paper, that a certain category of people must be tortured. The fact that public torture and execution have continued to be a way to discipline the enemies of the imperial state indicates that these enemies are not perceived as possible to control with the aid of discourse or social institutions. As with Damiens, their transgressions, real or imaginary, must be manifested on their bodies as a lesson that cannot be misunderstood. Thus, this paper argues that torture is not only a current practice, it is also imagined by contemporary culture as a necessary form of violence designed to maintain the impossibly porous borders between metropol and periphery.

    El Niño denotes a periodical warm water stream in the Pacific Ocean. But who knew about this phenomenon, where and how? El Niño ‘the boy’ emerged as a fabric of local experiences and stories of extreme weather events: tropical winter storms, floods, droughts and famines in the coastal states of South America, Indonesia and Southeast Asia. In the Northern Hemisphere this rich cultural history went largely unnoticed. Only in the 1980s and 1990s did El Niño acquire global recognition as an effect of the oceanic and atmospheric currents in the tropical Pacific region. As the oceans moved from a marginal to a central position in the discourse on the Earth’s climate cycles, ENSO – the ‘El Niño Southern Oscillation’ – became part of a global climate pattern. This paper explores El Niño ‘the boy’ and ENSO El Niño Southern Oscillation as juxtaposed and superposed environmental perceptions. While El Niño the boy conveyed horrific weather experiences on the human scale, ENSO became known through terrific scientific views of Earth from space. Earth observation by remote sensing satellites collected vast arrays of local measurements into new data fabrics. Studying the case of the US–French orbital satellite mission of TOPEX/Poseidon, this paper examines both the imagery from satellite data and the forecasting effortspreceding the strong El Niño winter of 1997–8. From the data and image sets of remote sensing satellites, recurring local disruptions emerged as a periodic global climate condition. Local experiences of El Niño and scientific perceptions of ENSO as a global climate cycle did not translate easily into each other. The paper discusses some of the epistemological tensions across spatial scales. While El Niño’s shift from exception to regularity fed into the framing of ‘climate change’ as a global disaster, the emerging ENSO regime obscured disaster locally.

    In 2000 when Sweden signed the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities the Roma minority became one of the acknowledged national minorities in the country. It meant that the rights of the Roma mi-nority would be safeguarded and the knowledge of its history and culture would be spread. In that context, the Swedish school, with its founded as-signment of democracy, was given an important role. The education was to communicate the multicultural values of the society and to make visible the history and culture of the Roma minority.

    The school books used in teaching today do not meet these demands. The view of the Roma minority given in school books is often inadequate and simplified. The present study will therefore examine a different type of edu-cational material used in schools and teaching, The Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company‟s programs of history and social studies regarding the Roma minority. Starting in postcolonial theory as well as critical dis-course analysis the study examines how the picture of the Roma cultural and ethnic identity in the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company‟s material has been displayed and possibly changed during the period of 1975 to 2013.

    The results show a picture of Roma which, both in form and content, con-sists of some clearly demarcated discursive categories. The obvious continui-ty of the categories gives a picture of static and invariable Roma identity. At the same time this unambiguous picture is broken both by giving the existing discourses new meaning and also adding new discourses. The complexity and nuances become more prominent and the Roma identity is integrated in common Swedish history telling. The changes in the view of Roma, given by the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company, can mainly be explained by the change of the Swedish immigration and minority policy and, as a conse-quence of this, the change of the school‟s mission regarding knowledge communication of Sweden as a multicultural country.

    År 1100 var Sverige ett kristet land, i alla fall till namnet, men det skulle dröja ytterligare nära 700 år innan de svenska samerna helt övergett sin gamla tro och gått över till den kristna läran. Religionsskiftet skedde långsamt, och även om många samer döpte sig redan under medeltiden är det först under 1600-talet som man på allvar kan se hur den gamla samiska religionen försvinner till förmån för kristendomen. Denna uppsats syftar till att utöka förståelsen för hur detta religionsskifte gick till och hur detta upplevdes av de berörda samerna själva. Genom att analysera protokoll ifrån lappmarkens domböcker rörande religionsbrott (så kallade "trolldomsrannsakningar") har jag undersökt hur de åtalade samerna själva uppfattade sina brott och hur de försvarar sig själva inför rätten, samt hur stark kristendomens ställning var bland den samiska befolkningen under denna period. Jag har även strävat efter att få en tydligare bild av vilka dessa personer var, och om detta svarar mot den gängse uppfattningen om att de åtalade i regel var nåjder.

    Genom en kvalitativ hermeneutisk metod har jag kommit fram till att den gamla samiska tron under skiftet mellan 1600- och 1700-tal fortfarande var relativt stark i stora delar av de svenska lappmarkerna, och min undersökning visar också att det var i de södra lappmarkerna som den gamla tron levde kvar längst. Jag har också dragit slutsatsen att den svenska kyrkan var relativt tolerant mot religionsbrott hos samerna fram till år 1689 då missionsverksamheten gick in i ett nytt skede. Jag kan också konstatera att det inte finns någon homogenitet hos de åtalade samerna – ålder och social status varierar markant, och ingen av dem beskrivs som nåjder i källmaterialet

    Between 1918 and 1933, the masses became a decisive preoccupation of European culture, fueling modernist movements in art, literature, architecture, theater, and cinema, as well as the rise of communism and fascism and experiments in radical democracy. Spanning aesthetics, cultural studies, intellectual history, and political theory, this volume unpacks the significance of the shadow agent known as "the mass" during a critical period in European history. It follows its evolution into the preferred conceptual tool for social scientists, the ideal slogan for politicians, and the chosen image for artists and writers trying to capture a society in flux and a people in upheaval. This volume is the second installment in Stefan Jonsson's epic study of the crowd and the mass in modern Europe, building on his work in  A Brief History of the Masses, which focused on monumental artworks produced in 1789, 1889, and 1989.

    This essay examines a central problem in historiography: how are radical social changes and political transformations represented in history? This problem concerns the figuration of agency and causality in historical explanations of revolutions and periods of sudden social disintegration and reintegration.

    A brief look at historiographies of modernity and modern society shows that ”the crowd” or ”the masses” – or, more generally, popular revolts and uprisings – are often introduced as explanations of such moments of transition. How do such explanations work, in which “the masses” are referred to as a historical causality and agent? To which extent can such explanations be seen as a general feature of histories of modern and contemporary history? These will be important questions in this essay.

    I draw examples and cases from 19th- and 20th-Century European historiography, historical sociology, history of literature and the arts.  In my earlier studies of the category of “the masses” in European political and cultural history, I have noted many such instances, from the French Revolution onward (Canetti offers a very interesting example, which I will perhaps focus on.) To make my discussion more relevant, I will also discuss reports and commentaries on the change and transformations that, allegedly, were generated by spontaneous collective movements in 2011–2013. What can a picture or an eyewitness account of the Tahrir Square in February 2011 tell us about historical causality?

    Underlying the notion of the crowd and the protesting collective as a historiographic motif in histories of modernity, there seems to be a certain understanding of collectivity as a trope or figure that, in a paradoxical sense, is introduced as a device for representing historical moments characterized by radical singularity – moments which are therefore ”unrepresentable” in an epistemological sense. Since masses and multitudes are plural agents marked by boundlessness and heterogeneity, they have apparently served historians well as explanations or causes of events that break existing political and social frames.

    The essay investigates whether this mode of explanation is empirical or figural, or both. Simply put, do crowds and collective revolts really explain historical transitions? Or do they serve mainly as tropes and substitutes, which impute some kind of causality and agency on events that are so complex that they surpass the explanatory power of historical categories or, indeed, of historiography as such?

Deutlich wird das Ringen um ein Verständnis von dem Phänomen der Masse in einer hochgradig nervösen Zeit - Jonsson ergründet das Spannungsfeld, das sich zwischen Bedrohung und Faszination öffnete. Gegenstand der interdisziplinären Untersuchung sind u. a. die Werke von Theodor W.
