    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

United by Inattention?: A Study of the Official Group of the Party United Russia on the Social Network Vkontakte2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study analyzes the official Vkontakte group of United Russia during the period of January 10 – April 10, 2013. Parliamentary majorities of United Russia have been a pillar of the Russian political regime which, despite being undemocratic, is still characterized by considerable competition. Therefore, the study draws upon the two-way symmetrical model of public relations which is compatible with the catch-all character of the party and the horizontal, open-ended nature of social networks. According to the model, an organization wishing to build an attractive image should communicate with its publics in a two-way fashion and be ready to change in accordance with people’s preferences.

The method of content analysis is employed in the study in order to establish instances of two-way communication between the members of the group and its moderators. Special attention is paid to discussions regarding legislation since such conversations can clearly evidence that the party is ready to react to ordinary people’s interests and preferences. However, according to the findings of the study, the users’ messages seldom received feedback and almost all of their suggestions and questions regarding legislation were ignored.

Skolsegregation: En fallstudie över etnisk och socioekonomisk skolsegregation på Frödingskolan2018Student paper second term, 5 poäng / 7,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this research the development of Abisko national park in Swedish Lapland has been studied from an accessibility perspective and how companies and organisations in the area is affecting it. The focus has been on the possibilities to travel to Abisko and also the accessibility and information in Abisko. An observation has been done where the the accessibility was looked at and interviews with operators in the area. Finally an analysis of documents which contains information about the accesability was done.

From our research we can show that an improvement of the transport to Abisko from Kiruna must be done in order to continue the development of Abisko as a tourist destination. From the establishment of Abisko national park till today the development of transport have played a big part in creating a destination. Operators in the area has also played a vital part in creating a destination by offering services that makes the park available to more people. Special laws and rules regarding national parks has formed the way companies can operate in the protected area, but has not been a bigger issue.

Stockholms stolthet: Stockholm Pride: En undersökning om Stockholm Pride festivalens påverkan på Stockholms besöksnäring.2015Student paper other, 5 poäng / 7,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis the survival and development of a yearly recurring event will be examined. The purpose of this work is to examine how the festival Stockholm Pride has developed and to find out what underlying factors and conditions that lays behind the development. Also being examined is how the event affects Stockholm city’s tourism industry. To be able to fulfill the purpose of the thesis a qualitative research has been used and two persons with allot of knowledge about Stockholm Pride and Stockholm’s tourism industry has been interviewed. Complementary data has been selected in the form of statistics over the number of visitors and nights spent in Stockholm and a project description about development and marketing has been analyzed. The result of the collected data has then been analyzed with the help of earlier theories and research and has led to a conclusion. With these components the purpose of the thesis has been fulfilled.

The analysis of the result and theories leads to the conclusion that Stockholm Pride both as a festival and an organization from its stars has developed and grown in size, however the development has not always been consistent but has had its downfalls. There are many factors leading to the positive development, examples are the hosting cities commitment and the target groups travelling pattern. The festival has a tendency to only affect Stockholm’s tourism industry in a positive way and attracts visitors and contributes to the city’s image.

Home and away: Immigrant’s Home-making processes and media use for integration2019Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Home as concept is profoundly symbolic and imbued with positive desires. Therefore, it needs to be discussed in relation to issues of power, hierarchies and control. In this presentation the migration-home nexus will be discussed, why also location/dislocation, home and away are important matters to grasp the relationship between humans, space, mobility, integration and feelings of home.

In migrating practices the processes of homing is accentuated, since migration entails leaving one(s) home behind, searching for a new place called home. The connection between identity and a specific geographical place can however be ambiguous, since we are becoming more and more mobile – physically and virtual. Connections and relations to other places and people ranging over geographical borders can be as important for sense of belonging and togetherness, as connections to places and people in the neighborhood. Home-making processes and feelings of home, in relation to the use of different media for these purposes, are therefore important perspectives to bring into studies of migration and integration.

In this paper, the relation between home-making, belonging, integration and media use will be discussed, based on an ongoing qualitative study on immigrants/refugees feelings of home and belonging in a small Swedish town.

The preliminary results indicate that the very opposition between home and away can be questioned. Rather they are enacted in affective, material and symbolic relation to each other and the homing is practiced through different medias to make away present in home, to feel at home.

Integration of social dimensions in climate resilient urban planning: A case of waterfront areas2017Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Urbanization demands sustainable planning and building, to handle the strain of a growing population. Strong urbanization is considered as a driver for vulnerability, and climate resilience has become a key concept. The UN 11th Sustainable Development Goal in Agenda 2030 states that cities should be made inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, making green and public spaces accessible in particular for women, children, elderly and people with disabilities. Yet, a social sustainable analysis is often lacking in planning aiming for the climate resilient city.

The waterfront area is a place where the tensions between “green cities”, climate resilience and social sustainability will bring the matters to a head, why we will use planning in waterfront areas as an example in our discussion. Waterfront areas have in many cities become areas of revitalization and planning ideals of concentration and competiveness, often with attractive, high cost housing aiming for environmental sustainability and “the green city”. These are areas planned to handle multiple climate effects, e.g. flooding and rising sea-level, while the local physical milieu, for example feelings of inclusion and safety, often get less attention in these processes.

The presentation builds on ongoing work that bring together literature of social sustainable perspectives - including topics like accessibility, safety, inclusion/exclusion, gender and justice - with climate resilience planning research, since there is a lack of research addressing these issues together. These fields need to be connected, in theory and practice, to reach a planning with both climate change resilience and social sustainability in mind.

Knocking on the Doors of Integration: Swedish Integration Policy and the Production of a National Space2019Inngår i: Journal of International Migration and Integration, ISSN 1488-3473, E-ISSN 1874-6365, s. 1-17Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article contributes to theoretical discussions on how immigrant integration is produced as a part of redefining national policy to local everyday practice, and what this tells us about the society in which the policy is formed. Integration is from this perspective a way to understand imagined social communities, how they are produced, who is considered to belong, and who is not. Document analysis and interviews with immigrants, local politicians, and officials in small- and medium-sized Swedish towns give insights into both what taken-for-granted assumptions the integration policy builds on and reproduces, and what consequences the integration policy have for the persons the policy is intended for. It is shown that the Swedish integration policy is itself a part of the production of a Swedish space as a container with closed doors, where immigrants are not given equal access and possibilities. This is created by putting sameness and difference at the core of the integration policy and by describing integration as an act of entering the Swedish space. © 2019, The Author(s).

Production of National Space and the Every Day Practice of Local Integration Policy2019Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, the system for the establishment of immigrants receiving residence permit is centralized to national level. However, local and regional authorities, as well as NGOs, are important for implementing integration on a local level. Even more so since immigrants themselves have identified belonging as the “ultimate mark” of integration. The place, people in the neighborhood and local practice therefore become as important as practical resources provided.

This presentation contributes to discussions on how integration is produced as a part of redefining national policy to local everyday practice, and what this tells us about the society in which the policy and practice are formed. The study shows that there is an unclear perception of what integration policies should achieve – who should be integrated and what the objectives of the policy are. The national definition of integration has locally partly been redefined.

Integration is in this presentation a way to understand imagined social communities, how they are produced and who is considered to belong and who is not. Interviews with immigrants, local politicians and officials in small and medium-sized Swedish cities give insights into both what taken-for-granted assumptions the integration policy builds on and reproduces, and what consequences the integration practices have for the persons the policy is intended for. Stereotyped perceptions about immigrant women and men are shown to be important factors in how local integration policies and practices are formed, which also forms the image of the receiving society and the Swedish society at large.

Spaces of Similarity – Practices of Difference: Swedish politics of integration and immigrated women’s organizations2013Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper focuses Swedish local integration politics and the specific ways immigrated women active in different women’s associations meet the Swedish society and local authorities and on how negotiations on similarities and differences are made, with a special focus on immigrant women's situation.

Four Swedish municipalities have been selected for this study on how integration is implemented and how ideas about integration produce and reproduce both local and national space. The empirical material of the paper consists of interviews with politicians and officials, as well as with immigrant women in various associations and organizations.

The paper concludes that integration may be likened to a space of similarity, as integration is construed by means of different metaphors as a move from something “outside” to Sweden, as a room to be entered. The policy and practice of integration is shown to be based on a (dis)similarity paradox in that integration is constructed on a discourse of similarity at the same time as assumptions and constructions of difference are a fundamental point of departure for the policy objectives. The paper also concludes that the template of immigrant women make real immigrant women unseen and faced out. Their associations are regarded as a space between home and society, why they are often given additional support, with the logic that immigrated women need help to come out of their homes. These facts are something the interviewed immigrated women are aware of and try to navigate through in their everyday life.

Spaces of the in-between: home, away and local integration policies2018Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Integration policies have been highly discussed in many Western countries over the last decade, both in academia and among politicians and practitioners - and the debates have received new actuality with what was called the “refugee-crisis” in the fall of 2015. In this paper, integration policies in Sweden is discussed, in relation to local practical work for immigrant/refugee integration and immigrants/refugees own struggles to make themselves feel belonging and at home in their new places. The question of local integration policies and their actual impacts on the urban living conditions of immigrants and refugees is addressed.

The presentation departs from an ongoing study on integration and feelings of home and belonging in a small town in the middle of Sweden. The discussion builds on interviews with immigrants, politicians and officials.

Feelings of home and belonging to a place is an important perspective to bring into studies of integration. At the same time, the connection between identity and a specific geographical place can be ambiguous, since we are becoming more and more mobile – physically and virtual. Connections and relations to other places and people ranging over geographical borders can be as important for our sense of belonging and togetherness, as connections to places and people in the neighborhood. We are not as place bound today as earlier at the same time as physical and mental borders seem to increase in importance. This relation between home and away and its meaning for local work and policies for integration will be discussed.

    Abstract [sv]

The woman as problem and solution: Analysis of a gender equality initiative within the Swedish Rescue Services2016Inngår i: NORA: Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender Research, ISSN 0803-8740, E-ISSN 1502-394X, Vol. 24, nr 2, s. 95-109Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to study how problem definitions of gender equality affect the possible outcomes of gender equality initiatives. The Swedish Municipal Rescue Services were chosen as the empirical example because they offer a workplace where women are greatly under-represented despite years of gender equality efforts. The article analyses how reasoning around gender equality shapes and constructs problem formulations around gender and equality. This article contributes to the debate on the conditions of gender equality founded on gender equality definitions, and how this relates to the potential for change. The gender equality efforts within the Rescue Services are problematized based on Bacchi’s policy analysis model. We do so by analysing the applications attracted by a call for a gender equality initiative within the Municipal Rescue Services—A Fire Station for Everyone. The article argues that, to some extent, the problem definitions in this case undermine gender equality initiatives as they place women—whom they wish to recruit to the Rescue Services to make it more gender equal in a numerical sense—in a paradoxical position as both problem and solution. Nor do they problematize power issues. It is stated that the given problem descriptions do not leave a lot of room for change, but that the method used to analyse the problem descriptions can be an important tool for understanding why gender equality initiatives may struggle to achieve their intended objectives.

Fusionizing ethnicity as a journey from liability to advantage: A study of Vietnamese restaurants in Sweden2019Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Traditional ethnic businesses are often associated with ‘sweat shops’ – a token of low-quality and low-tech or as mainly targeting the ethnic enclaves and remaining foreign to the local population. Strictly speaking, ethnicity has been viewed as a disadvantage. The last decades, however, witness changes in ethnic businesses, relating to the expansion of high-tech firms or as a unique case, of high-end ethnic restaurants. This study explores the process of transforming ethnicity from a liability to an asset. For this purpose, we draw upon a case study of 10 luxurious, high-end Vietnamese restaurants in Sweden. Primary visual content analysis of home pages and social media is performed to understand how, and which, ethnic markers are used to express exclusiveness. Observations and ‘mystery shopper’ experience are used as supplement. As a theoretical lens, we adopt international institutional and immigrant entrepreneurship literatures and theories of production of space. The initial findings indicate that ethnicity is transformed from a liability to an asset through a distinctive fusionizing process. This process comprises of two sub-processes: (1) ethnicitizing of home and (2) homing of ethnicity. The ethnicitizing of home produces a space that gathers and displays the most distinguished features of the given ethnicity. The homing of ethnicity is the outcome of not only diversifying but also, harmonizing ethnic values with local values.

Regional Development, Sense of Place and Belongingness: a Swedish perspective2015Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden discussions on regional identity and regional belonging have become more and more integrated with perspectives of the meaning of culture and local communities as important for regional development and growth. In local, regional and national policies cultural diversity is emphasized as a potential for development and growth. Sweden is today a multi-cultural society where its citizens have backgrounds from all over the world. However, there is a distance in regional politics between policies of cultural diversity for local and regional development and the actual citizens. It is therefore not clear how policies of cultural diversity are to be applied in practical regional planning. Research shows that immigrants in Sweden often have a feeling of exclusion and that they do not belong there and that they aren’t accepted as they are. There seems to be a gap between policies and the actual situation in everyday life of inhabitants in Swedish regions.

Research on sense of place and migration is extensive, but there is still not much done on the influence of place in relation to issues of integration. The meaning and importance of place has not been emphasized enough in immigration studies. Therefore, this paper will – from a Swedish perspective - discuss the sense of place and belonging related to a person’s identity and background, with the aim to contribute to an understanding of who feel belongingness where. This discussion is mainly based on a survey conducted in the region of Värmland in Sweden. The results show that persons with a Swedish background feel more at home in the place where they live, in the municipality where they live, as well as in the region of Värmland, than persons with a foreign background. Not surprisingly people having lived more than ten years or their whole life at the same place feel more at home in as well the local, regional as the national level. This can in turn be related to Swedish integration policy and the situation of immigrants in Sweden experiencing a sense of exclusion and thereby a lack of sense of belonging to a certain place. But we can also see that other factors, like if you live in the city or in the countryside), are important for a sense of place and feeling at home. Our results will be discussed in relation to issues of urban, regional and social sustainable development.

Obstacles and Possibilities with Collaboration in Municipal Public Sector: A study of collaboration between the rescue service and home-help services2016Inngår i: The 2016 RSA Annual Conference Building Bridges: Cities and Regions in a Transnational World, Karl-Franzen University, Graz, Austria. 3rd-6th April 2016, 2016Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of collaboration in municipal public sector is to ensure welfare and safety for its citizen, as well as to ensure economic sustainability in the municipality. Different forms of collaboration in the public sector can be an important part of sustaining a satisfactory service, especially in regions with a declining population, but also to give a faster and better service in all kind of regions. In this study we put focus on collaboration between municipal rescue service and home-help service, a collaboration that can be placed in civil and societal contingency and preparedness for unexpected events.

Both the rescue service and the home-help service are highly gendered sectors. The point of departure for this study is that the gender coding of occupations and competences lay down conditions for the collaboration, why it is important to shed light on these codings and how they effect an effective collaboration and sustainable implementation. Our understanding is that gender is a social construction that is produced and reproduced through interaction. This construction have effect on how we are “made” as men and women, how we are formed as individuals, and how the society is both symbolic and structurally organized around what is conceived and perceived as male and female duties, occupations and places.

The results of this study build on 30 interviews with staff in rescue services and home-care services (both employees and heads of these services). The results show that collaborations differ between municipalities, both what is included in the collaboration and how it is staged and performed, and that the processes of collaboration are complex and that they challenge ideal of organization, contents, responsibilities and who or whom should do different work tasks. We can see that conceptions of gender in male and female dominated work are often reproduced and reinforced in many of the studied cases, which hinder an effective service. But we can also notice that the collaboration by home-care service staff is perceived as a possibility for increased status and better resources when they collaborate with the rescue service.

The Unchallenging Method is a Good One: about Measures for gender Equality and Diversity in the Swedish Rescue Service2013Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Gender equality in the Swedish Rescue Services has been a political directive since the 1990ies, but has led to few visible changes. The Swedish Rescue Service is still a male-dominated organization with a traditional focus on firefighting. The call for change is made with references to new economic realities, conceptualizations of risk, and directives for gender and ethnic equality. The overriding concern of this paper is discursive constructions of equality work in relation to political directives on increasing equal opportunities in the Swedish Rescue Services. Gender is treated as a prevailing power structure and as an integral part of organizational practices. The paper is based on a questionnaire about the practical work made on equality in the Swedish Rescue Service, answered by over 1000 persons working in the Swedish Rescue Service. The questionnaire contains a large amount of open comments, which is analyzed in this paper. The result shows that two thirds of the respondents have a mainly positive attitude towards gender equality in the Rescue Service, but that the measures for equality are considered as "wrong methods". Our analysis discusses that only methods that doesn’t challenge the present organization are considered as acceptable.

Journalism as Livelihood: gender, space and mobility2015Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Despite a large body of research on how journalistic work has changed in the past few decades, very little attention has been paid to what journalists do outside work (e.g. their lifestyles, personal networks, family situations, overall work and life situation), nor to how journalists negotiate their work lives and their private lives, despite the fact that such factors also may have an impact on the ability of journalists to fulfil some kind of public/democratic function. Such questions are arguably becoming more and more salient as journalistic work is becoming more mobile, more contingent, and more insecure.

In this paper we propose a multi-disciplinary approach to analyzing the interplay between journalistic work and lifestyles/life situation that combines intersectional feminist theories and methods in human geography with media studies through the concept of livelihood (rather than paid work, profession, occupation, etc.) at the center. We argue that this concept better captures aspects of mobility, place restraints, contingency and mutual interrelation between the public and private spheres in relation to journalistic work. The livelihood concept provides a tool for critically analyzing the gendered spaces and mobilities of journalism and the consequences for men’s and women’s daily life.

Rumslig socioekonomisk variation i Karlstad: En studie av vattnets roll för socioekonomisk fördelning i Karlstad tätort2018Student paper second term, 5 poäng / 7,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Where people choose to live is a consequence of a variety of factors, such as housing cost, design, localization and personal considerations. Urban blue spaces provide a range of perceived benefits to nearby inhabitants and is generally seen as attractive traits for an area, influencing housing cost and demographics amongst other things. This has implications for socioeconomic spatial distribution, and thus the city could also be viewed as a map of socioeconomic variation. This paper seeks to examine the socioeconomic spatial variation in the city of Karlstad in relation to urban blue spaces. Using publicly available statistics for 23 different areas of the city, this variation is visualised in a series of maps and tables. Two models, one using average income and one using a proposed local socioeconomic index, are devised and used to estimate the impact of blue spaces on socioeconomic spatial variation in Karlstad. Results show a significant socioeconomic variation between different areas. Certain areas score high and certain areas score low in every category of the socioeconomic index, painting the picture of a socioeconomically divided city. The models used are proven to be inaccurate. Although the four areas with the lowest average income are all located in zones furthest from blue spaces, no evidence indicate that high and medium high average income areas, nor areas with high socioeconomic index, generally are located in closer proximity to blue spaces. Findings imply that socioeconomic spatial variation in Karlstad cannot be reduced to blue spaces and is a complex area of further research.

Entrepreneurial Urban Governance Shaping Regional Territories2013Inngår i: Regional Studies Association European Conference, Shape and be Shaped: The Future Dynamics of Regional Development, Gateway: Territorial politics and policy. Tampere, 5th - 8th of May 2013., 2013Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this presentation is to discuss how the ongoing decentralization processes of the state transforms and shapes regional territories and regional politics and policies. The discourse of enhanced competition between different places has led to new territorial strategies aiming at enhancing the competitiveness of places, both at a local, regional and national level.  This has resulted in the implementation of urban regeneration policies where different place marketing techniques are used to strengthen a place brand or a place image. To a great extent these policies work in favor of supporting larger metropolitan areas, both as growth engines but also as representative and image building for a larger region. Harvey (1989) calls this shift from a state Keynesianism building on convergence between weaker and stronger regions, to new policies supporting economic growth on the local, regional and national level entrepreneurial urban governance. This entrepreneurial urban governance rather supports urban metropolitan areas, than less economic developed regions. It is the city-regions that are seen as able to compete with other regions all over the world, where the importance of being a “global city”, represented by cosmopolitanism, culture, diversity, internationalization and most important as a financial center and as a headquarter for international firms that are promoted. These processes are characterized by market driven growth, flexibility, competitiveness but also larger economic disparities between regions and cities both nationally and internationally.

To adapt to the competitiveness discourse new territories and spaces are being created.  The concept of urban regeneration of a city or in this case a region to better its reputation has led to a shift away from being a provider welfare services to the importance of being someone in an international market by changing its image and reputation. In some cases by focusing on a larger urban area to create a different image as a metropolitan region represented by cosmopolitanism, culture, diversity but also by being innovative, learning and entrepreneurial. Policies and planning are enhancing urban economic development, by investments in infrastructure, new shopping areas, new neighborhoods, flagship projects, monuments but also by privatization of welfare services and public space. As a result there has been an increase in different place marketing techniques that aiming to better the image and the place brand of a certain region to attract investments, firms, visitors and new inhabitants to the region. Capital and investments are no longer as place bound as before which increase the competition between different places and a necessity to be as attractive as possible in an international market. New solutions such as New Public Management are therefore challenging more traditional political systems in the democracies of the western world. Public administration have more similarities with how firms and businesses are run by being dependent on the market, rather than being a provider of public services, democratic responsibility and public participation. The competitiveness discourse shapes territory and space, creating new and complex networks of relations between multiple actors in society, both private and public. This in turn makes it difficult for citizens to affect politics and the creation of space leaving little or no room for marginalized groups in society to participate.

Based on two separately case studies of two essentially different regions, one administrative region, Värmland in Sweden and one informal, functional region “The 8 million city”, stretching from Oslo in the north to Copenhagen in the south, the practices  and techniques used in urban regeneration projects on the regional level will be presented.

Jakten på den attraktiva regionen: En studie om samtida regionaliseringsprocesser2014Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores different expressions of regionalism(s) and regionalization processes in a Swedish and a westernized context. The case studies in the study conducted are represented by two different kinds of regions, Värmland and The Eight Million City. Värmland is a rather typical administrative and political bordered region at the subnational level in the Midwest of Sweden. The Eight Million City in turn exemplifies an imaginary cross border region, stretching from Oslo in the north, to Gothenburg, Malmö and Copenhagen in the south, connected in a network by a larger infrastructure corridor. It is also an example of how new planning practices stretching over already institutionalized national as well as local and regional borders, can be seen as challenging earlier planning and policy structures connected to the state.

It is possible to see how different kinds of strategies related to strategic spatial planning practices are used to enhance the competitiveness of each region. In both cases this produce and reproduce different perceptions about what represents and constitute a competitive region. The empirical material analyzed in the study has been generated by interviews, participant observations, and document analysis based on discourse theory and discourse analysis.

Different imaginaries are institutionalized in each region by different means and practices. In Värmland new perceptions about regional citizenship, regional identity and the idea of what constitutes a modern region are being institutionalized into the regional context by building a brand for the region. In The Eight Million City the project idea is based on an enlarged labor market connecting the larger cities in the region together in a network. As well as in Värmland, the knowledge produced in the project contributes to institutionalize different perceptions of citizenship and what makes up a competitive and attractive region.

A Quadruple and Quintuple Helix Approach to Regional Innovation Systems in the Transformation to a Forestry-Based Bioeconomy2016Inngår i: Journal of the Knowledge Economy, ISSN 1868-7865, E-ISSN 1868-7873, Vol. 7, nr 4, s. 963-983Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article aims to understand the possible preconditions for the transformation of a regional innovation system (RIS) into a quadruple and quintuple helix system applied to the development of a sustainable forestry-based bioeconomy in Värmland, Sweden. Research points to the necessity not only of further developing current innovation systems to include more actors than earlier but also of taking concern for the environment as a way towards attaining sustainability. The research was carried out in response to the need to understand he fourth helix and its role in RIS and to transform to a sustainable bioeconomy, as identified by researchers, policymakers and industry representatives. This study was inspired by participatory transdisciplinarity and a transdisciplinary research design, acknowledging the importance of a variety of actors in knowledge production from different spheres of society. Much of the empirical material gathered for this research was based on interviews and a workshop with different stakeholders. The results show that the use of a quintuple helix RIS in Värmland for the transformation to a forestry-based bioeconomy could be a possible way forward towards sustainability. The model proposes that involvement of civil society in the innovation system could contribute to a larger societal transformation that aims to change consumer behaviour, production patterns, technological developments, infrastructure, norms and values. However, the involvement of civil society in the innovation system must still be regarded as part of a vision statement in regional policy documents.

A Quadruple Helix Approach to Regional Innovation Systems for a Transformation to a Forestry Based Bio Economy?2015Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Climate change and environmental problems are becoming more complex, uncertain and multi-scalar, affecting a variety of actors and agencies. Therefore calling for a variety of knowledge’s and values in decision making processes. New forms of government and governance are being implemented and in the same time public participation in decision making processes is pointed out as a democratic right by as well environmentalist and pressure groups as in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe 1998 (Reed, 2008). Further collaboration between more actors than in earlier innovation systems is pointed out as important in as well innovation policys concerning smart specialization strategies as well as in the development of a European bio economy. In the latter context the European 2012 Bio Economy Communication Strategy lifts the importance of engaging society in the transition, thereby creating a link between society and policy makers in decision making processes. Thereby, this article mainly takes its departure in the broadening field of literature around regional innovation systems and the concepts of quadruple and quintuple helix in a forestry bio economy in Sweden. More specifically it aims to examine the preconditions of a possible transition into a forestry based bio economy by the move from a triple helix to a quadruple helix system in the region of Värmland in Sweden. Which actors are involved in the current innovation system and how is environment included in the transition?

One point of departure is where the European Commission in 2012 established a strategy for the development of a European bio economy; Innovating for sustainable growth: A bio economy for Europe, aiming to transform the European economy into becoming more sustainable by the: production of renewable biological resources and the conversion of these resources and waste streams into value added products, such as food, feed, bio-based products and bioenergy (The European Commission, 2012:3). The European Union thereby sees the bio economy as one possible way of transforming society into becoming fossil free, creating a more sustainable European economy. Further the European Commission’s imposition on European regions to develop smart specialization strategies so called RIS3 – Research and innovation smart specialization strategies (Aranguren & Wilson 2013), have led to an extension of earlier regional innovation systems. Regions around Europe now develop smart specialization strategies to draw on their own unique resources to withhold funds from the European structural funds (Aranguren & Wilson 2013; Carayannis & Rakhmatullin 2014).

    Abstract [en]

This publication is to be seen as my testament to human geography with a focus on my research. The publication consists of two parts: two paper presentations and a text that summarizes all my published research results together with a list of my publications.

An explanation of the paper presentations is necessary here. They have been in my desk drawer for a long time but have never been published. Now  when I am finishing my research career I would love to see them in print at last. Let us call them the expression of my last scientific ambition. They are unpolished versions directly from my heart.

The first paper is entitled “Complementary Aspects of Thoughts in Human Geography” and the second paper is entitled “Geographical Identities and Social Change – Some Critical Aspects on Regions as Key Factors for Development”. Both papers represent central concluding ideas from my academic career.

The second part consists of a summary of my research during my academic career. I also relate the text to my publication list at the end of the volume.

Stadsdelen Kronoparken i Karlstad: Samhällsplaneringens vedermödor2016Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Gender and elections: Female journalists’ Twitter use2017Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Existing studies show that Twitter has become an appropriate tool for journalists to share

breaking news, network, connect with sources or to brand themselves and their news

organizations. However in using Twitter journalists have to contend with their conflicting

professional and private identities (Holton & Molyneux, 2015). In this paper, we return to this

debate by interrogating the question whether journalists assert themselves in terms of their

gender identities especially when the national discourse on gender equity is pervasive. We

examine Twitter use by journalists during the 2017 elections in Kenya with a special focus on

female journalists who constitute one-third of the number of journalists in the country (Ireri,

    2015).

Major constitutional change in 2010 set a one-third gender threshold for representation in

government and politics in Kenya. Consequently, media discourse surrounding gender has

focused on representation of women in politics and the institutionalization of gender parity in the

Kenyan society. With a slow reform pace and male-dominated politics, civic organizations, media

professionals and social movements have intensified gender campaigns, particularly during

election periods. In the run-up to the 2017 general election, for example, there have emerged

movements that seek visibility offline and online in a bid to change attitudes of Kenyans “rooted

in a patriarchal cultural system” (Kareithi, 2013, p. 266). One example is the 2017 Twitter

campaign against political TV talk shows dominated by male panellist (or ‘manels’).

The pervasive gender discourse during elections puts female journalists at the centre of

constant conflicting demands to promote their professional roles as well as project their voice in

a national discourse on gender. In fact, their journalistic work exposes them more to pressure

from civic organizations, political parties and gender activists as well as growing Twitter

communities [recent studies show Kenyan Twittersphere is one of the most vibrant in Africa

    (Portland-Communications, 2015)].

We will track and analyse tweets from a sample of 20 male and female journalists on

Twitter from four media outlets in Kenya over a period of two months preceding the Kenyan

general election in 2017. By analysing Twitter profiles, sourcing, retweets, news stories shared and

whether their tweets carry opinion, we aim to deepen the understanding of how Kenyan

journalists utilise Twitter in election times and whether there are distinct female and male

practices. We expect to find disparities between the content male and female journalists post,

and that female journalists are more assertive about national gender discourses. The expected

contribution of this paper is in discussing journalists Twitter use during elections and the

implications of a gender discourse that puts to test the professional and personal identities of

    journalists.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Samlande och status i en annan värld: Spelares syn på kapital i onlinespelet World of Warcraft2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Aim: To gain a better understanding of how online players value collectible items and gaining status and success in the game World of Warcraft.

Methodology: The data was collected through semi structured interviews with active World of Warcraft players. The answers were then put against existing theories on capital and subcultures, mainly the online gaming culture.

Results and conclusion: The players in the study had differing opinions, mainly because every person is unique and sees the game differently. Some patterns did emerge, however, that seemed to work well with the theoretical groundwork.

Future research possibilites: Building a similar study using a larger survey instead of personal interviews would make for a more general understanding of the population. It would also serve to either confirm or dispute the findings in this study. Also widening the field of view by asking players of different kinds of games would give a more complete understanding of the gaming culture as a whole, not just World of Warcraft players.

Contributions to science: The study gives a more personal and empirical view on what is considered valuable in an online game world. Previous studies have mostly relied on theories and observations. The aim also is to further to connect traditional capital theory on a relatively new field, the gaming culture, and legitimize it as a serious field of study.
