    Abstract [en]

Encounters  and  relations  between  people  with  different  cultural  backgrounds  tend  to  be  primarily  discussed  in  terms  of  exclusio,  prejudice  and  conflict.  This  thesis  focuses  on  the  creative  aspects  of  intercultural  encounters.  The  starting  point  is  that  the  parties  involved  sometimes  succeed  in  avoiding  the  latent  conflicts  between  cultures  by  acting  trategically.  The  aim  of  this  thesis  is  to  increase  understanding  of  the  possibilities  represented  by  intercultural  encounters  and  to  identiy  the  strategies  employed  by  the  actors  who  try  to  deal  with  the  contrasts  and  dilemmas  involved  in  encounters  with  other  peopl  with  different  cultural  experiences,  identities  and  methods.  The  empirical  part  of  the  thesis  is  based  on  four  qualitative  case  studies  that  are  characterised  by  rather  positive  co‐operation  between  the  actors  in  the  intercultural  encounter,  i.e.  "immigrants"  and  the  majority  society  in  Sweden.  The  empirical  data  are  based  on  45  individual  interviews,  two  focus  group  discussions  and  a  number  of  minor  observations  made  in  the  inland  part  of  northern  Sweden,  where  the  case  studies  were  carried  out.  The  principal  result  of  this  research  is  that  the  actors  begin  to  see  culture  as  a  possibility  when  they  find  themselves  in  a  osition  where  they  feel  obliged  to  change  their  established  patterns  of  behaviour,  due  to  some  sort  of  crisis  situation.  The  strategies  used  by  the  actors  to  deal  with  culture  conflicts  can  be  divided  into  intra‐group  strategies  and  inter‐group  strategies.  The  former  attempt  to  achieve  relative  homogeneity  between  the  competing  groups  in  the  field  of  the  intercultural  encounter,  while  the  latter  illustrate  how  the  participants  deal  with  what  they  experience  as  differences.  Four  inter‐group  strategies  have  been  identified:  1)  the  status  quo  strategy,  2)  the  loose  coupling  strategy,  3)  the  selective  strategy  and  4)  a  culture  mixing  strategy.  The  latter  three  are  characterised  by  innovative  combinations  that  organise  the  existing  cultural  elements  in  a  meaningful  way  These  strategies  result  in  new  cognitive  structures,  whose  limits  maintain  the  balance  between  different  cultural  elements.

The integration of immigrants in northern Sweden: A case study of the municipality of Strömsund2009In: International migration (Geneva. Print), ISSN 0020-7985, E-ISSN 1468-2435, Vol. 47, no 1, p. 101-131Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the integration process with regard to an integration and voluntary re-settlement project in a rural area in northern Sweden. The project was an attempt to use existing resources in the municipality to attract people with an immigrant background to move from segregated urban environments to a rural municipality. Potential settlers were also recruited abroad. The empirical data were based on eight group interviews with recently arrived immigrant families, and eleven individual interviews with people who played an active role in the project organisation. The results showed that the new families had been integrated into the community to the extent promised by the local authority. The process was facilitated by the resources provided by both parties, but it did not involve significant costs. The immigrants were motivated to move because they wanted a new lifestyle, while the local community was motivated to provide a supportive structure for the new inhabitants because of an awareness of the imminent demographic crisis facing the community due to depopulation. The integration process was strongly influenced by the implicit criteria on which the newcomers were recruited.

    Abstract [en]

The goal of the paper is to optimize the design of Email-Marketing campaigns for hotel companies on the base of a test market approach. For this aim first, a fractional-factorial design is employed to reduce the amount of test variables related to different versions of Email campaigns. Secondly, based on the Email Marketing Response Model proposed by Rettie and Chittenden (2002) a logistic regression is performed to identify the influence of the proposed variables on the click-through rate. Finally, the obtained results and further research questions are discussed.

Beyond the numbers: qualitative growth in women's businesses2012In: International Journal of Gender and Entrepreneurship, ISSN 1756-6266, E-ISSN 1756-6274, Vol. 4, no 3, p. 289-315Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this research paper is to investigate the growth of women's businesses from a qualitative perspective. The paper identifies strategic building blocks for defining a set of different growth platforms. Moreover, the paper investigates growth ambitions for women inside each identified "type" of growth platform and identifies critical motivation variables that can influence the decision to move from growing one business platform to growing another platform. Design/methodology/approach: The results are based on 191 women entrepreneurs. Data were analyzed by coding narrative statements from the survey into overarching themes for business platforms, descriptive frequency analysis and logistic regression analysis techniques. Findings: The paper discerned five different growth platforms and noticed intrinsic or extrinsic growth ambitions for platform growth. The extrinsic platforms are the most common, but all platforms can be characterized by equally high growth aspirations. Each of the identified platforms is associated with distinct and unique blocks that the women entrepreneurs try to put together and resolve in order to grow their companies. Women entrepreneurs move between the different platforms when the building blocks of previous platforms have been established and secured. Variables such as profits and ownership may explain such transfers of growth ambitions. Research limitations/implications: While acknowledging the qualitative growth of business platforms, the paper takes an approach that goes against the traditional view of quantitative growth. Originality/value: This study is a response to the lack of research on qualitative growth and women's entrepreneurship and suggests that the manifested qualitative growth can be in order to secure blocks on different business platforms.

Why bother to plan for crisis: A study of the use of crisis plans during a water pollution incident2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: This case study elaborates on the theme of crisis planning and addresses the question of the use of crisis plans in actual crises. Using Merton’s concepts, the article considers the manifest and latent consequences of prepared crisis plans. Method: The study is based on data collected during one particular incident, consisting of interviews, notes, and observations at a Municipal Council, County Administrative Board, and County Council in Sweden. Result: The results show that the organizations did not use their crisis plan during the incident. The most important factor was the drawing up of the plan. Even if the plan did not cover the specific set of problems that arose, it helped people think systematically about how to handle this new crisis. Conclusion: The crisis plan’s latent function prepared officials for what to do in an emergency.

The Swedish Reserve Officer: Filling Vacancies or Using Competences2011In: Armed forces and society, ISSN 0095-327X, E-ISSN 1556-0848, Vol. 37, no 2, p. 284-300Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract The aim of this study is to examine the reserve force’s role in and contribution to the new Swedish expeditionary armed forces. Survey data were obtained from 418 reservists. The results show that reserve officers are well educated and hold high positions in the civil society. According to the reserve officers themselves, the Armed Forces do not ask for their nonmilitary competence. The discontent with this situation is greater among the younger reservists as opposed to the older ones. Four different opinions on the need for the reserve officers are suggested. First, reserve officers are requested to fill vacancies, that is, a volume regulator. Second, the reserve officers are needed because they have unique competences other than military that are used by the armed forces. Third, reserve officers are needed from an economic point of view. Finally, reserve officers contribute to the civil–military relationship. However, when using a framework intended for regular officers, the contribution of the reserve officers’ civil professional competence has not been recognized.

Joint Staff for Emergency Response Operations2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

When incidents or disasters occur, focus is often on response operations at the incident site, or on the highest command of emergency response organizations. Studies on the work performed in staffs are, however, rare. The term “staff” is often used in connection with the line-staff organization, to denote a permanent support unit for executives. The staffs in focus for this study are, however, temporary and specific for a certain emergency response organization. They are activated when a sizeable incident or a disaster has taken place, and they are disbanded when the incident is over. The aim of this study was to investigate interaction within a joint staff when a number of emergency response organizations, geographically localized in the same building, created a joint staff during an exercise, in response to a (fictitious) major incident. Thereby, organizational boundaries were transgressed in a way that may sometimes occur at the incident site, but is very uncommon in staff organizations. The boundaries between staff units of different emergency response organizations are generally fixed and rigidly upheld, each staff more or less independently supporting the operative units of its own organization. The focus of this study was trans-boundary interaction under pressure within a joint staff.

    Samverkan i praktiken2011Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Upplevd arbetstillfredsställelse: - En jämförelse mellan heltidsanställda och deltidsanställda gymnasielärare2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Boundaries between work and leisure within psychosocial life environment: –an interdisciplinary literature review2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Today, being physically away from the workplace does not mean that we necessarily are changing to another environment or leaving our work tasks behind in psychological terms. This paper presents a review of the literature that identifies the effects that cause a blurring of the line between work and leisure. It combines theories from the fields of Informatics, Psychology and Work Science. The results show that people express the need for a balance between work and leisure but are less able to find or create ways of allowing the necessary time for recovery. Presented are some initial suggestions on how to design ICT in order to separate work and leisure activities.

    Abstract [en]

The presence of ICT (Information Communication Technology) in our psychosocial work environment and in our personal lives, has increased rapidly during the past 40 years. This way of interacting with ICT is often characterized in terms of access to information and social networks with the possibility of being independent of time and place. Every person’s psychosocial health is influenced by their life environment; a combination of their work and home environments, their life roles and of their social networks. People who work professionally in the field of ICT or use ICT in their work experience a blurring between their professional and private roles. However, when people’s experience of work and leisure becomes blurred, this may impact on their psychosocial health. They need to develop strategies to create ways of allowing time for recovery. In this chapter we present a review of the literature that identifies the effects that cause a blurring of the line between work and leisure. Moreover, we present some examples of strategies for managing the blurring of contexts facilitated by ICT. Presented research combines theories from the fields of psychology, informatics and work science.

    Abstract [en]

The development of accounting is distinguished by two different accounting traditions, the Anglo-Saxon and the Continental European tradition. They have taken different directions since they are founded on different legal systems. In order to harmonize accounting between the member states the EU has issued a number of Directives on Company Law. The most fundamental is the Fourth Directive. It contains a requirement that the annual accounts shall give a true and fair view of the company's assets, liabilities, financial position and profit or loss. Since there is no definition of the meaning of ”a true and fair view”, the interpretation has come to vary among the member states. As Sweden entered the EU, the requirement of a “true and fair view” was implemented in Årsredovisningslagen (the Annual Accounts Act). The purpose of this thesis has been to, in the light of the different accounting traditions, describe and analyze how the concept of ”a true and fair view” is interpreted and applied by Swedish companies. To do this a qualitative method has been used. We have conducted a survey among companies and an interview with an auditor. The results show, among other things, that the companies and the auditor interpret “true and fair view” unanimously, despite the lack of a definition. The interpretation corresponds well to how the requirement is described in Årsredovisningslagen. We can see ”true and fair view” as an objective for the annual accounts which can be achieved by complying with laws, recommendations and “good accounting practice”.

Does Gibrat's law hold for retailing?: Evidence from Sweden2012In: Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services, ISSN 0969-6989, E-ISSN 1873-1384, Vol. 19, no 5, p. 464-469Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Gibrat's Law predicts that firm growth is a purely random effect and therefore should be independent of firm size. The purpose of this paper is to test Gibrat's law within the retail industry, using a novel data-set comprising all surviving Swedish limited liability companies active at some point between 1998 and 2004. Very few studies have previously investigated whether Gibrat's Law seems to hold for retailing, and they are based on highly aggregated data. Our results indicate that Gibrat's Law can be rejected for a large majority of five-digit retail industries in Sweden, since small retail firms tend to grow faster than large ones. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

    Abstract [sv]

Translation and inscription in development projects: Understanding environmental and health care-related organizational change2009In: Journal of Organizational Change Management, ISSN 0953-4814, E-ISSN 1758-7816, Vol. 22, no 5, p. 480-493Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to argue that the interface between projects is of particular interest when organizing development projects. It offers a theoretical discussion of translation and inscription phases, not only because they are important to the understanding of mobilizing action in development projects, but also because they are crucial in a chain of sequential projects that are organized as responses to new situations.

Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses illustrations of development projects in public management in Sweden to discuss a fundamental organizing problem of projects: how project delimitation and formation take place.

Findings – The paper has focused on organizational change and development projects regarding environmental and health care organization renewal projects. It has analyzed how such projects are organized and linked to context. Development problems and their solutions cannot be divided into a functional structure since they overlap and demand attention by a multitude of perspectives during translation.

Research limitations/implications – It is theoretically interesting to highlight certain slices of the organizational reality in projects. The paper has chosen a project perspective and focus at the beginning and end of projects. In theoretical terms, it has chosen to call these phases translation and inscription.

Practical implications – Projects are different compared with permanent organizations due to the existence of beginnings and endings. On the one hand, permanent organizations are normally “going concerns” where the start is back in history and the end is clouded in a distant future. On the other hand, in a project, translation and inscription phases are unavoidable as they are triggered by the specific conditions underlying beginnings and endings.

Originality/value – Projects with clear boundary-overlapping character cannot be judged with concepts stemming from the methods of construction project management. In contrary, the paper argues that there are two other concepts that can better explain the special organizing problems invoked by the cases cited here: translation and inscription.

Att marknadsföra en region: En jämförande studie om fem olika regionala turistorganisationer och deras uppbyggnad av marknadskommunikation2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The current financial crisis and its effects on the French economy2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

AbstractIn this paper, we will be interested by the current financial crisis and how it did affect on the French economy. After setting the global French point of view and an overview of other crises, the discussion will be focused on the subprime crisis and how it turned into a worldwide financial crisis to reach the state of France. The data of the French statistic institute (INSEE) will be used as an analytic tool to show how France has been hit.To discuss this topic, we start from a chronology of the last crises to an overview of the French point of view in economy to correlate the current financial crisis to the French economy shrink. To set the subprime principles permit to explain the spread of the toxic mortgages in the worldwide finance and the collapse of economies. In more details, that explains the French economy collapse. The shrinking French economy started with the GDP and as a snowball effect, foreign trade, and companies followed. In the same time, the rise of unemployment and the change of the consumer behaviour can be notice. All of those are correlated with the current financial crisis.Going through this paper, we learnt that the subprime crisis is the cause of the current financial crisis. Indeed, the spread of the toxic loan into the whole financial market provided its collapse and finally reached to a fall of the world wide economy. In this study, we were focused on the effects of the current financial crisis on the French economy. This paper showed in the conclusion that the economy are recovering after a period of depression.

France within the European Union and the Eurozone : a survey study2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we are going to study the relations between France, the European Unionand the Eurozone. The involvements of France in the European Union and the Eurozone aswell as the effects of the European evolutions in France. As France has played many roles indifferent areas for the European Union, the relations are social, political, juridical andobviously economic. We cannot analyse these relations without interest in the historicalpart, which shows the chronological involvements of France in the EU, from the firstagreement in 1951 to the Treaty of Lisbon in December 2009. Beside this, our analyse needsalso to focus on the European Union as several institutions; as well as the Eurozone and itseconomic consequences in Europe and in France. To do so, we are going to raise monetaryand institutional questions and develop the most important European stakes as theenlargements, the European budget, the common policies and the European institutions.France can be considered as a founding father of the European Union, and in spite ofsome difficulties; both France and the European Union have had positive influences on eachother and the European Union could not have grown in this way without France.

The Natural Forest Protection Program in China: A contingent valuation study in Heilongjiang province2012In: Journal of Environmental Science and Engineering B, ISSN 2162-5263, Vol. 1, no 3, p. 426-432Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In 1998 the Chinese government implemented the Natural Forest Protection Program, NFPP, which included logging restrictions, protected areas, replanting, and a range of other policies aimed at safeguarding the state of the country’s forests and reducing the risk of erosion and flooding. A second phase of this policy is currently being discussed. In this paper, we use contingent valuation to estimate the WTP for maintaining the program among the inhabitants in Heilongjiang Province in northern China. Our results show that, even with fairly conservative assumptions, the aggregated WTP for maintaining the program for another five years is some 3.24 billion Yuan per year. This can be compared to the current cost of the program in the province, which is some 1.57 billion Yuan per year.

Överskuldsatta människors mentala hälsa med avseende på depression, ångest och självmord2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sustainable Tourism Practices in the Hospitality Sector: A Case Study of Scandic2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Recently the interest in green environmentally friendly products and services increased dramatically. This trend does not stop at tourism related products. Therefore, this thesis aims to have a closer look at the sustainability issues in the hospitality industry. The theoretical background of this study defines associated terms like sustainability, sustainable tourism and development as well as eco tourism, because they are often used interchangeably. Moreover, sustainable practices including their benefits within the hotel industry are examined. Lastly, the role and importance of eco labels is analyzed. The second part of this thesis is dominated by a case study of the Swedish-based hotel chain Scandic. A qualitative research approach was chosen in order to explain and describe the case in detail. The findings show that Scandic implemented various sustainable practices in their daily operations. The business believes in the concept of sustainability, incorporates it in every possible area of action and profits from the benefits. Scandic is clearly a leader when it comes to sustainability efforts in the hotel industry. In this regard, the business acts as a role model and may motivate other businesses to follow. The thesis concludes by giving recommendations for further research.

What matters most to prejudice: Big Five Personality, Social Dominance Orientation, or Right-Wing Authoritarianism?2004In: European Journal of Personality, ISSN 0890-2070, E-ISSN 1099-0984, Vol. 18, no 6, p. 463-482Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Whereas previous research has studied the relation of either (i) personality with prejudice, (ii) personality with social dominance orientation (SDO) and right-wing authoritarianism (RWA), or (iii) SDO and RWA with prejudice, the present research integrates all approaches within the same model. In our study (N = 183), various causal models of the relationships among the Big Five, SDO, RWA, and Generalized Prejudice are proposed and tested. Generalized Prejudice scores were obtained from a factor analysis of the scores on various prejudice instruments (racism, sexism, prejudice toward homosexuals, and mentally disabled people), which yielded a one-factor solution. The best-fitting causal model, which was our suggested hypothetical model, showed that Big Five personality had no direct effect on Generalized Prejudice but an indirect effect transmitted through RWA and SDO, where RWA seems to capture personality aspects to a greater extent than SDO. Specifically, Generalized Prejudice was affected indirectly by Extraversion, Openness to Experience, and Conscientiousness through RWA, and by Agreeableness through SDO, whereas Neuroticism had no effect at all. The results are discussed against the background of previous research and the personality and social psychology approaches to the study of prejudice.
