    Abstract [en]

Ann-Mari Borgelin has edited the memoirs of her father, who commanded the Danish voluntary corps in the Estonian and Latvian wars of independence 1919. Captain Richard Gustav Borgelin was a talented writer who not only gives precious information on the operations, but who also presents the reader with interiors from homes of peasants and officers, and recounts numerous interesting conversations with people he met during the campaigns. He likewise met some Swedish volunteers to Estonia, most notably Georg Malmberg, who was the commander of an armoured train.

    Abstract [en]

Markets of the future: Swedish economic diplomacy in Africa and Asia during the era of decolonization

This paper analyses Swedish commercial responses to the political developments in Africa and Asia during the 1950s. The primary sources consist of correspondence and reports in the archives of the General Export Association, and articles in the periodical Svensk Export. The theoretical framework departs from the claim that economic diplomacy is a market practice that has contributed to the construction of foreign markets. The collective efforts of the Association to promote Swedish trade with African and Asian regions, and the ways in which those efforts were represented to its members, created a shared geographical imagination in Swedish business circles.

Demanding but potentially lucrative, framtidsmarknader (”markets of the future”) formed a central tenet of this shared imagination. According to the Association, the promise of future profits in the postcolonial world required that Swedes become more pro-active and ”modern” when marketing their products overseas. The analysis focuses on India and the Belgian Congo. Both were the subject of a series of Swedish economic-diplomatic efforts, and they represent different articulations of this market type. The paper makes several contributions. It argues that the construction of framtidsmarknader resembled that of so called ”emerging markets” in the 1990s. It contextualizes the commercial logic behind Sweden’s early ventures into development aid. Furthermore, it highlights the relationship between the commercial category framtidsmarknader and the social-scientific category ”developing countries” which emerged around the same time. Finally, it traces the formation of a professional cadre of commercial experts on developing countries: the Trade Commissioners.

Arabian Nights in the Midnight Sun?: Exploring the temporal structure of sexual geographies.2009In: Historisk Tidskrift (S), ISSN 0345-469X, Vol. 129, no 3, p. 487-510Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Self-preservation is usually associated with biological drives and instincts. In the case of mankind, self-preservation has also been associated with self-love and the prevention of one's own extinction by avoiding life-threatening situations. Self-preservation as a love of finite existence is also something that is at the heart of the historian's endeavor. The historian's love of finite existence and the idea of self-preservation have self-love in common. But the historian's love also embraces other existences than his own. This love of finitude cannot be separated from a will to prevent the extinction of finite existences and to allow their existence to continue in history. The article traces the love of finitude in autobiographies written by Swedish historians in the last 150 years. In the analysis, nature represents everything that extinguishes finite existences and history represents the preservation of humans in time. I argue that this issue recurs in many autobiographies although often only mentioned in the margins as random utterances or comments made in passing. The texts analyzed are the autobiographies of Erik Gustaf Geijer (1783-1847), Wilhelm Erik Svedelius (1816-1889), Alma Soderhjelm (1870-1949) and Ronny Ambjornsson (b. 1936).

Filmen som historisk källa: Historiografi, pluralism och representativitet2006In: Historisk Tidskrift (S), ISSN 0345-469X, Vol. 126, no 3, p. 471-490Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article discusses why films have not been used more than they have as historical sources and argues that films ought to be used more by historians. Principally, historians can use film in three basic ways, all of which give access to information about the period when it was produced.

First, films can with caution be used for information about the persons, objects and events depicted in documentary films. Historians’ preference for the written word has though largely excluded the use of motion pictures. Attempts to use documentaries as historical sources fell victim to the criterions of source criticism, which declared all films to be false because they are manipulated through use of cuts and voice-overs etc.

Second, films can be used as a source for time-bound audiovisual configurations of historical events and historical individuals: Recently historical didactics have taken an interest in films due to the insight that audiovisual historical writing is dominates the dispersion of views of the past among the general population. The audiovisual writing of history thus becomes important because regardless of whether or not it is false it contributes to the formation of a historical consciousness among the public.

Finally, films can be used as a source for time-bound conceptions concerning, for example, gender, class, race and age in feature and documentary films. Because films are produced for a mass audience, are made by many people, and are expensive to make, there arise the phenomenon of the films pluralism. This pluralism gives considerable weight to the value of motion pictures as historical source material. Since a film is a collective effort that has to reach as many people as possible in order to turn a profit, it has to keep very close to its own time preferences, which, in turn, makes the motion picture inclusive by nature. Furthermore, through motion picture’s close connection to realism, the human raw material – the actors – will function as representations of a range of different conceptions concerning gender, race and class, and its mutual relations. Obviously, there are also exceptions to this pluralism. For this reason, the scholar must learn to “read” the films in relation to both the social and medial context in order not to misinterpret them.
