Sexual assault, irresistible impulses, and forensic psychiatry in Sweden2014In: International Journal of Law and Psychiatry, ISSN 0160-2527, E-ISSN 1873-6386, Vol. 37, no 1, p. 99-108Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

After forensic psychiatry was firmly established in Sweden in the 1930s, many rapists and individuals charged with assaulting children underwent a forensic psychiatric examination. The physicians found that most of them had not been “in control” of their senses or not “in complete control” of their senses at the time of the crime. If the court ordered a forensic psychiatric examination, the defendant had a very good chance of either being discharged or having his sentence reduced considerably. By the 1950s psychological perspectives began to dominate in forensic psychiatry. In the forensic records of the 1950s we can notice a shift from a biomedical to a socio-psychological perspective, and crime was increasingly related to conditions that were not seen as mental derangement from a legal point of view. As a result, it became less and less common, from the 1950s onwards, for sentences to be commuted or defendants discharged.

Den föraktade friheten: En idéhistorisk analys av några politiska värderingar i öst och väst2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Annorlunda i Östs ögon.

    Abstract [sv]

Building a New Society: Ideas on social revolution and the conception of the people’s community in interwar Swedish fascism2007In: Ideas in History, Vol. 2, no 2Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article discusses how the idea of a social revolution was interpreted by the major fascist movements in Sweden during the interwar period, and how this social revolution was intended to result in the rebirth of the collective folkgemenskap [people’s community] in the form of the fascist ideal state the folkstat [people’s state]. The analysis will focus on the ideological rather than the practical political level, and is based on source material from the three major fascist organisations in Sweden: the Swedish National Socialist Party, the National Socialist Labour Party and the New-Swedish National Federation.

The importance of the specific context of interwar Sweden will be taken into account, and the analysis of the fascist quest for the people’s state will be made against the background of the contemporaraneous discourses on the people’s home and on eugenics. To conclude, it will be considered whether there are any variations discernible within the fascist ideological spectrum regarding the idea of a social revolution and the construction of a people’s state.

En värld av geometri och rörelse: Ontologi och multiversum i Emanuel Swedenborgs Principia, i jämförelse med Leibniz2011Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This article explores the manner in which the virtues and vices play a part in the representation of the social order in the work of Don Juan Manuel, with a particular emphasis on the Libro del cauallero et del escudero, and in reference to the configuration of chivalry in Alfonso X’s Siete partidas (2P, Title XXI) and Ramon Llull’s Llibre de l’orde de cavalleria. I discuss how Don Juan Manuel’s representation of knighthood and chivalry differs from that of his predecessors, the moral and ethical notions inherent therein, and its relation to conceptions of social order. The discussion concerns the motivations and aims of these diverging conceptions of chivalry and how they are legitimated and justified.

Banbryterskorna: Skapandet av den kvinnopolitiska arenan och kvinnan som politisk aktör kring sekelskiftet 1800-19002017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

When women gained access to the medical field in late the late 1800’s the ideal image of a physician was a masculine man. Women doctors needed more than officially recognised competence to be successful within the profession.

Several of the first Swedish women doctors was published in the great medical journals of the time. They also wrote hygiene books to teach common women about their bodies. By writing for colleagues and other women to read, women doctors constructed a persona which was upheld by gendered performative actions. These were expressed in how the women doctors wrote about their own and other doctors’ research as well as in how they wrote about women’s bodies. In this way they created a professional identity which included current ideals for physicians as well as women. The goal which these actions were to reach a doctor’s ethos, which was considered needed to be seen as a good doctor. The first women doctors did so in a feminine way.

Got Milk?: En undersökning av mjölkpropagandan 1960–19792019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A Fractured Position in a Stable Partnership: Ebba Hult, Gerard De Geer, and Early Twentieth Century Swedish Geology2014In: Science in Context, ISSN 0269-8897, E-ISSN 1474-0664, Vol. 27, no 3, p. 423-451Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores the scientific partnership between geology professor Gerard De Geer and his wife Ebba Hult following their marriage in 1908. De Geer was an influential participant in Swedish academia and international geology. Hult worked as his assistant until his death in 1943. The partnership was beneficial for both spouses, in particular through the semi-private Geochronological Institute, which they controlled. The article argues that marriage was a culturally acknowledged form of collaboration in the academic community, and as such it offered Hult access to geological research. However, the paper also argues that the gendered scientific institutions produced a fractured position. Partly, Hult managed to create her own role as researcher in geochronology. As a woman and a wife, however, she never moved out of her husband's shadow. Gender is understood as a relational category: Hult was an outsider who participated partially in standardized structures which gave great power to her husband and other men. The fact that she shared this status with other women in Swedish science at the time indicates the structural nature of their position. Nevertheless, they all had individual trajectories through academia. Indeed, the study of collaborative couples illustrates the multifaceted links between individual actions and the historical context of science.

An Assemblage of Science and Home The Gendered Lifestyle of Svante Arrhenius and Early Twentieth-Century Physical Chemistry2014In: Isis, ISSN 0021-1753, E-ISSN 1545-6994, Vol. 105, no 2, p. 265-291Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This essay explores the gendered lifestyle of early twentieth-century physics and chemistry and shows how that way of life was produced through linking science and home. In 1905, the Swedish physical chemist Svante Arrhenius married Maja Johansson and established a scientific household at the Nobel Institute for Physical Chemistry in Stockholm. He created a productive context for research in which ideas about marriage and family were pivotal. He also socialized in similar scientific sites abroad. This essay displays how scholars in the international community circulated the gendered lifestyle through frequent travel and by reproducing gendered behavior. Everywhere, husbands and wives were expected to perform distinct duties. Shared performances created loyalties across national divides. The essay thus situates the physical sciences at the turn of the twentieth century in a bourgeois gender ideology. Moreover, it argues that the gendered lifestyle was not external to knowledge making but, rather, foundational to laboratory life. A legitimate and culturally intelligible lifestyle produced the trust and support needed for collaboration. In addition, it enabled access to prestigious facilities for Svante Arrhenius, ultimately securing his position in international physical chemistry.

Father, Son and the Scientific Spirit: Otto Pettersson, Hans Pettersson and the imitation of oceanographyIn: Science as Culture, ISSN 0950-5431, E-ISSN 1470-1189Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Families have historically facilitated a migration of science across generations, but how has this repetition been achieved? The Swedish oceanographer Hans Pettersson (1888-1966) inherited oceanography, primarily through is father, Otto Pettersson (1848-1941). Academic power was transferred from father to son, and one of Otto’s major concerns was to find a successor from his family. By exercising control over the early institutions of oceanography, he created a regime where that goal was achieved. Nonetheless, the process of transferring knowledge was multifaceted and paradoxical. Resources were exchanged between father and son, and Hans did accept the academic kingdom, but their relationship was marked by severe tensions.

The key analytical concept to capture these contradictions here is imitation – drawn from Gabriel Tarde’s sociology. Hans Pettersson did not so much overtake his father’s research as he imitated a posture – including attitudes, desires and embodiments – towards science. The right posture included dedication and asceticism in the laboratory setting as well as an ambition to produce new results. Pettersson imitated the desires of an academic entrepreneur. He learned how to design strategies, create his own institutional setting and a research field to dominate. In sum he imitated efforts to create renewal. Moreover, a key feature of the posture towards science was the willingness to struggle for academic survival, often through controversies. Imitating science thus meant repeating a historically specific culture.

    Abstract [en]

Recontextualization: The creative construction of contextsThis chapter deals with ”recontextualization”. It argues that a core analytical function of any history writing is reflecting upon which context a source, actor, or other historical phenomenon is placed within. The chapter draws on the example of the early twentieth-century Swedish geographer Sven Hedin to indicate various contexts that his travels, publications and images can be placed in. Depending upon which context we as historians construct, different narratives about Hedin’s endeavors emerge. More importantly, the choice of context has repercussions on the object of study beyond Hedin as a concrete actor. Accordingly, the chapter indicates how it is possible to reread and recontextualize the work of the geographer as part of a much broader history of planetary scales, produced through travel narratives and imagery going back to the seventeenth century. While Hedin himself did not explicitly claim to be part of such a history, the historian is at liberty to construct such a broader context. Thus, Hedin is recontextualized, and important steps in historical analytical work can be produced.

Panoramic visions: Sven Hedin in ’Transhimalaya’ 1906-19092018In: The power of the In-between: Intermediality as a tool for Aesthetics Analysis and Critical Reflection / [ed] Sonya Petersson; Christer Johansson; Magdalena Holdar; Sara Callahan, Stockholm: Stockholm University Press, 2018, p. 185-212Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter studies the panoramic visions created by Swedish geographer Sven Hedin on a journey to Tibet between 1906 and 1909. It reads Hedin’s geographic images and texts through a broader nineteenth-century history of the panorama and indicates how his panoramic visions were part of a broader media culture of the century. Furthermore, the chapter claims that Hedin’s geographic images and texts contributed to the shaping of a modern regime of vision where the world in overview was a desirable object. Using intermediality as a method, I display how these visions emerged through a network of media formats, including photographs, hand-drawn panoramas, water-colour sketches, and texts. The article argues that these formats were combined through “descriptive layering.” They shared the panorama as a motif, yet they were also layered in a material sense: attached to, and interlaced with, each other. I argue that descriptive layering was a way of handling the vexed relationship between overview and detail, and it allowed the panoramic representations to move between knowledge-based and aesthetic experiences.

The Historicity of the Physics Class: Enactments, Mimes and Imitation2014In: Cultural Studies of Science Education, ISSN 1871-1502, E-ISSN 1871-1510, Vol. 9, no 2, p. 495-501Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This essay discusses Anna Danielsson’s article “In the physics class: university physics students’ enactments of class and gender in the context of laboratory work”. The situated co-construction of knowledge and identity forms the crucial vantage point and I argue that it is a point of intersection between the history of science and research in science education. The former can provide a valuable understanding of the historicity of learning science. I thus highlight the importance of knowledge as situated in time and space, for instance the importance of the historical division between “head and hand” clearly visible in the discourse of Danielsson’s informants. Moreover, the article discusses how identity is produced in specific knowledge contexts through repeated performances. The article closes by briefly suggesting analytical alternatives, in particular “belonging” and “imitation”. Both draw on post-structuralist ideas about the citational nature of identity. Belonging is created by citing and reinstating norms. Imitating knowledge, identity and norms is an issue that should be brought to the fore when we speak of education and training.

Svensk snillrikhet? Nationella föreställningar om entreprenörer och teknisk begåvning 1800-20002014Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]
