    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how former pupils in a daycareschool experienced there stay, in relation to the ordinary school. The method we used was an qualitative interview study with former pupils of a daycareschool. We have analyzed the result with help of Goffmans theory about stigma, Beckers labeling theory, Antonovskys SOC (a Sense Of Coherence) concept and Gjaerums theory of controlling. After analyzing the results we came to the conclution that the pupils where stigmatized and labeled as deviants in the ordinary school whilst in the daycareschool they got an enhanced SOC and a feeling of control. Due to the daycareschool’s work with these pupils they no longer sees as stigmatized and labeled.

”I princip svensk”: En kvalitativ studie om hur fem unga med utländsk bakgrund upplever och hanterar rasifiering2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Place and youth political action: how place shapes political action in rural Sweden2024In: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research, ISSN 1103-3088, E-ISSN 1741-3222, Vol. 32, no 2, p. 125-141Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There are important gaps in the research on youth political action due to a lack of attention to the roles of place and the experiences of young people in rural places. To address these gaps, this article presents findings from intensive interviews with 15 young people (aged between 16 and 29 years) who identified as politically/socially engaged and lived or had recently lived in a rural place in Sweden. Analysis of their responses, based on constructivist-grounded theory, shows that place dimensions shaped three social processes of young people’s political action: engaging in politics in (rural) places, finding recognition as political actors in (rural) places and negotiating political belonging in relation to (urban) places. By linking these processes with Agnew’s three-dimensional understanding of place, the analysis provides novel insights into how various dimensions of place shape crucial social processes of youth political action.

Upward wage mobility of low-wage workers: The role of trade unions2023Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

While previous studies have demonstrated the disadvantages of workers who get stuck in low-wage employment, more knowledge is needed about the institutions that facilitate getting better-paid jobs. This paper examines the role of trade unions, taking a cross-country comparative perspective. It uses data on 29 European countries from the European Union Statistics on Income and Living Conditions and multilevel modelling techniques. The results suggest that stronger trade unions improve chances for upward wage mobility among low-wage workers. We also find differential effects across population subgroups, with larger benefits among better educated employees and workers in the prime-age.

Temporary employment, employee representation, and employer-paid training: a comparative analysis2022In: European Sociological Review, ISSN 0266-7215, E-ISSN 1468-2672, Vol. 38, no 5, p. 785-798Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines the moderating role of employee representation on the chances of receiving employer-paid training among temporary and permanent workers from a cross-country, comparative perspective. The impact of employee representation is considered at the individual level and at the country level. The statistical analyses are performed using data from the 2015 European Working Conditions Survey and multilevel modelling. Our results suggest that temporary workers receive less employer-paid training than permanent workers. Access to employee representation increases workers' access to employer-paid training, regardless of contract type. At the country level, we found that the training-related benefits from union coverage are larger for permanent than for temporary workers. Our findings suggest that employee representation in the workplace could operate as an equalizer between temporary and permanent workers; while at the country level, the lobbying effect of union coverage is more beneficial for permanent workers.

Understanding how place is addressed in research on young people’s political action: cases from Sweden2024In: Journal of Youth Studies, ISSN 1367-6261, E-ISSN 1469-9680, Vol. 27, no 3, p. 455-469Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Following recent critiques of the metrocentric nature of global youth studies, this paper explores the role of place in current research on youth political action in Sweden. Drawing on Agnew’s [2011. “Chapter 23: Space and Place.” In Handbook of Geographical Knowledge, edited by J. Agnew, and D. Livingstone. London: Sage] concept of place and using qualitative interpretive review as our method, we examined three sets of research publications on three different aspects of youth political action in Sweden. Our analysis found that place was addressed differently in each set of publications: youth political socialization and civic engagement were approached as placeless, street protests were examined as place assumed and urban justice movements were studied as place-based. The first two sets of publications contribute to reproducing a metrocentric understanding of youth political action, where urban areas are constructed as the key settings for political action among young people, while rural or peripheral areas are assumed to work in the same way or are depicted as non-political. By contrast, the publications on urban justice movements offered an alternative by exploring political action as place-based. The need to study the place-specific ways that young people do politics is discussed, with its potential to further the understanding of how young people do politics from where they are.

Ungdomars cannabisanvändning: Yrkesverksammas förståelse för orsaker samt risk- och skyddsfaktorer på individ-, grupp- och samhällsnivå2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

FIXED-TERM CONTRACTS, TRADE UNION REPRESENTATION AND EMPLOYER-PAID TRAINING: A Comparative Multilevel Analysis Across 35 European Countries2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the moderating role of trade union representation in addressing the gap in employer-provided training between permanent workers and workers with fixed-term contracts (FTCs) from a cross-country, comparative perspective. The impact of trade union representation is measured on two different levels: (1) access to trade union representation at the workplace at the individual-level (2) average trade union representation at the country-level, measured as trade union power. The statistical analyses are performed using data from the 2015 European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS) and multilevel modelling. Our result suggests that, across the European countries, workers with FTCs receive less employer-paid training than permanent workers. Regarding the impact of trade union representation, statistically significant result is found only at the individual-level, where access to trade union representation increases employer-paid training regardless of employment contract. For the interaction between access to trade union representation at the individual-level and FTC, no significant relationship is found. However, the models with the cross-level interaction between trade union power and FTC indicate that employer-paid training increases for permanent workers only. Our findings suggest that trade union representation at the workplace could operate as an equalizer between permanent workers and FTC workers, while at the country-level, their lobbying effect is beneficial for permanent workers only

Exploring changes over time in habilitation professionals' perceptions and applications of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, version for children and youth (ICF-CY)2010In: Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine, ISSN 1650-1977, E-ISSN 1651-2081, Vol. 42, no 7, p. 670-678Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective:This study explored how professionals in interdisciplinary teams perceived the implementation of the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, version for Children and Youth (ICF-CY) in Swedish habilitation services.

    Design:Descriptive longitudinal mixed-methods design.

Methods:Following participation in a 2-day in-service training on the ICF-CY, 113 professionals from 14 interdisciplinary teams described their perceptions of the implementation of the ICF-CY at 3 consecutive time-points: during in-service training, after 1 year, and after 2.5 years.

Results:Implementation of the ICF-CY in daily work focused on assessment and habilitation planning and required adaptations of routines and materials. The ICF-CY was perceived as useful in supporting analyses and in communication about children’s needs. Professionals also perceived it as contributing to new perspectives on problems and a sharpened focus on participation.

Conclusion:Professionals indicated that the ICF-CY enhanced their awareness of families’ views of child participation, which corresponded to organizational goals for habilitation services. An implementation finding was a lack of tools fitting the comprehensive ICF-CY perspective. The study points to the need for ICF-CY-based assessment and intervention methods focusing on child participation.

Identifying child functioning from an ICF-CY perspective: everyday life situations explored in measures of participation2011In: Disability and Rehabilitation, ISSN 0963-8288, E-ISSN 1464-5165, Vol. 33, no 13-14, p. 1230-1244Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose. This study was part of a larger work to develop an authentic measure consisting of code sets for self- or proxy-report of child participation. The aim was to identify common everyday life situations of children and youth based on measures of participation.

Method. The study was descriptive in nature and involved several stages: systematic search of literature to find articles presenting measures for children and youth with disabilities, identifying measures in selected articles, linking items in included measures to the ICF-CY, analysing content in measures presented as performance and participation and identifying aggregations of ICF-CY codes across these measures.

Results. A large number of measures for children and youth with disabilities were identified but only 12 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. A slight distinction in content and age appropriateness appeared. Measures presented as performance covered all the ICF-CY Activities and Participation chapters, whereas measures presented as participation covered five of nine chapters. Three common everyday life situations emerged from the measures: Moving around, Engagement in play and Recreation and leisure.

Conclusion. Only a small number of life situations for children and youth emerged from items in selected measures, thus, other sources are needed to identify more everyday life situations.

Varför vill ni inte delta?: En kvantitativ studie om orsaker till låg svarsfrekvens på en medarbetarundersökning.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Mothers with cognitive limitations who have children in placement benefit from intervention2021In: Child & Family Social Work, ISSN 1356-7500, E-ISSN 1365-2206, Vol. 26, no 1, p. 79-88Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Mothers with cognitive limitations who have children in placement need to be listened to and to receive help in understanding and dealing with their situation. A support programme for this group was developed in Australia and then adapted for use in a Swedish context and named 'Mamma Trots Allt' (MTA). The aim was to examine the experiences of these mothers regarding their mothering role after participation in MTA. An explorative and qualitative design was used. Inclusion criteria were mothers with cognitive limitations, a child in placement and participation in MTA. Nine mothers, eight of them from a previous study, gave their informed consent to participate. A study-specific interview guide was adapted to people with cognitive limitations. The interviews took place after the final MTA session. The qualitative analyses resulted in a description of the mothers' experiences and how they changed after MTA, resulting in an overall theme, two subthemes, four categories and 11 subcategories. MTA facilitated the mothers' maturation and broadened their earlier, stereotypic life expectations. Offering a support programme benefits not only the mother but most likely the child as well.

A father nevertheless: Self-confident but resigned fathers with children in foster care2023In: Journal of Intellectual Disabilities, ISSN 1744-6295, E-ISSN 1744-6309Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This qualitative study aimed to explore the experiences of nine fathers with neurodevelopmental disabilities with children in foster care, including their fathering role, visits and formal and informal support. Systematic text condensation was the analysis method used. The respondents’ experience of fatherhood revealed two categories: I accept my situation and I am frustrated. Though self-confident, the fathers expressed ambivalence between acceptance and frustration with their role. The study shows that more should be done to provide adapted support for these vulnerable fathers with children in foster care, although they seldom demand such support. Social workers and professionals from the rehabilitation team within the healthcare service should be aware of gendered settings, specifically norms of masculinity. Increased efforts from the social workers may reduce the risks of detachment in parenthood because engaged and informed fathers are in the children’s best interests.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to gain a deeper understanding of the administrative officials work with assessments in home studies of adoption. To answer the purpose, we chose to focus on the guidelines for administrative official’s assessments in home studies of adoption and what assessment areas that is fundamental to the administrative official’s assessments. The study is structured on the basis of a qualitative approach where we have used semi-structured interviews. We interviewed seven administrative officials in the social services which conducted home studies of adoption. The interviews were conducted in different municipalities in order to demonstrate that the result does not depend on local circumstances. We can however say that administrative officials in the various municipalities had close cooperation among themselves, which resulted in that the local factor could have some impact on the result. We have analysed the results based on theories of discretion and the street-level bureaucracy. We have in this study concluded that all administrative officials used the same guidelines and almost all of the administrative officials used the same investigation method. Even though all the administrative officials emanated from the same guidelines and though almost all of the seven administrative officials also used the same investigating method, we discovered in the results and analysis section that the implementation in home studies of adoption may differ between administrative officials in the various municipalities. We have interpreted this result as a consequence based on how each administrative official uses their discretion. Furthermore we found that the administrative officials did not think that there was one assessment area that was more important. There are a number of areas that are important to consider which depends on the applicant's background.

Kapitel XIX. Typer och syndrom2023Other (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our study was to describe, compare and analyze how representatives from different professions in high school look upon their experiences of the schools work with helping students with mental health issues as well as preventing mental illness among the students. In our study we chose to use a qualitative approach by conducting interviews since we wanted to receive views from the representatives from different professions regarding the high schools work with mental illness. We interviewed six people who represented different professions in school and they worked at two different high schools. In the research we used it appears that collaboration and discretion were significant components regarding the schools work with mental illness. In our study we find that the Student Health Care have a central role in the work with mental illness among the students, but other professional groups seem to have an important role as well. The different professional groups collaborates in the work with mental illness and how collaboration function appears to affect the discretion of the professionals in their work.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to increase knowledge about how latinamerican women are potrayed in American popular films. We examine whether ther are apparent sterotypes in relation to gender, ethnicity and class. With the support of an intersectionality approach and with the use of conceptual explanations of ''latino'' represantations in films, we aim to analyze three Hollywood films over the time period of 2003 to 2011. These films are ''Chasing papi'' (2003), ''Ask the dust'' (2006) and ''Without men'' (2011). The used method to enable us to further analyze the material is a qualitative content analysis. The crucial aspect of a qualitative content analysis is to work with themes, which we have done. These themes are (1) sexual discourse (2) rasified discourse (3) class marked femeninities.  Through our analysis we have found that the latinamerican female character is stereotyped in relation to her gender, ethnicity and class in the sense that she is portrayed different and exotic in contrast to other actors in the films.

Vägen upp: hur socionomer hanterar sin arbetssituation och når ett högre välbefinnande2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Integrationsprocessen och invandrare: Intervjuundersökning med sex invandrarkvinnor2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Social work is a social phenomenon, existing in most societies, that has given rise to a multitude of special organizations and professions. For that reason social work is dealing with a complex identity. The purpose of this study is to illustrate how social workers and the scientific discourse interpret the concept of social work. In addition to that the study intends to show similarities and differencies. The research process containes two studies, one based on qualitative interviews with five social workers and the other consisting a surway of academic litterature. To enable a comparison of the results the studies start out of some, deliberatly choosen, themes. These are “definitions of social work”, “socialworkers”, “society, law and organization” and “ethics”.

In summary, the results, reviled a surprising unity in the interpretations of social work. Social workers, as well as the scientific discourse, manifest social work as a profession that promotes social change and problem solving in human relationships. The differencies concern social work beeing interpret normative by the social workers and more descriptive by the scientific discourse.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study investigates how the host community of Tenerife perceives the socio-cultural effects of tourism on the island. The method chosen for the study was qualitative interviews which were performed with six respondents, each born in Spain, living permanently in Tenerife and employed within service-related occupations. The interview material was interpreted and handled according to a hermeneutic approach. The results of the study showed that the respondents had an over-all positive perception of tourism. Perceived positive socio-cultural effects were related to cultural and linguistic influences. Problems related to alcohol and community disorder were believed to be negative effects although they were not present to the same extent according to the respondents. The sociological theory “us and them” could be applied to this study since the locals chose to live and spend their free-time outside the tourist areas.

Oro för brott – ett storstadsfenomen?: En kvantitativ studie om oro att utsättas för brott utifrån regionala skillnader i Sverige.2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Discretion gives social insurance officers a certain amount of self-determination in the assessment of work ability. A legally secure assessment of work ability and a sharp relation to rules and guidelines are expected. It thus becomes difficult to be self-determinate as rules and guidelines entail some restrictions in the discretion. The purpose of the present study is to examine how social insurance officers with responsibility for disability pension experience their discretion in relation to their main assignment; assessment of the insured’s work ability. To answer the study's purpose and questions, a qualitative method has been used where five semi-structured interviews were accomplished with social insurance officers, all of whom with responsibility for disability pension. The results show that the social insurance officers’ discretion is limited based on legislation, formal roles and the quality of the medical report. Furthermore, there is a minimal space for enabling through the assessment chain, but the limitations prove to have a superior role. Finally, the results show that the social insurance officers’ make the assessment of work ability in different ways. The results of the study have then been analyzed in a thematic analysis based on previous research and theoretical points of departure.

    Abstract [en]

We have investigated social workers' work with women living in dual vulnerability, namely women who are both subjected to intimate partner violence and have substance abuse problems. Through interviews with social workers from Stockholm County, we have gained insights into their perceptions and experiences, as well as the challenges and conditions that affect their work. In our study, we used a qualitative research method focusing on hermeneutics to deeply explore social workers' experiences of working with intimate partner violence and substance abuse. We applied thematic analysis to systematically identify and analyze key themes from the data collection, which facilitated a detailed interpretation of their professional perspectives. The study showed that working with women in dual vulnerability is particularly difficult and demanding. Women in dual vulnerability often have more extensive and severe needs than those who only live with violence or abuse. The social workers emphasized the importance of building trust and creating a safe environment for abused women, as many have previous experiences of betrayal and lack of trust. Long-term commitment and continuity of contact are crucial for providing effective support. Cross-professional collaboration among various actors such as women's shelters, treatment centers, and healthcare proved to be central to offering holistic support. The conditions for providing adequate support are affected by the availability of resources such as time, personnel, and education. Many social workers experience that they have limited resources, which can hinder their ability to provide effective help. Continuous training is also important for addressing the specific needs of women in dual vulnerability. Working with women who are both substance abusers and victims of violence differs from working with women who only experience violence or abuse in several ways. It requires a broader and more integrated approach, a higher degree of flexibility and adaptability, as well as a greater emotional burden. Social workers need to handle multiple problem areas simultaneously and be creative in their solutions. By highlighting the specific needs and challenges that social workers face in their work with women in dual vulnerability, this study has contributed to a deeper understanding of how support efforts can be developed and improved. To enhance working conditions and the effectiveness of support, more resources, better training, and improved collaboration between various actors are required. We hope that our research can contribute to the development of more effective methods and strategies within social work to improve support for this vulnerable group.

Kan alla nå toppen?: En kvantitativ studie om könsskillnader i olika befattningar på den svenska arbetsmarknaden2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Health Effects of Overweight and Obesity in 195 Countries over 25 Years2017In: New England Journal of Medicine, ISSN 0028-4793, E-ISSN 1533-4406, Vol. 377, no 1, p. 13-27Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND Although the rising pandemic of obesity has received major attention in many countries, the effects of this attention on trends and the disease burden of obesity remain uncertain. METHODS We analyzed data from 68.5 million persons to assess the trends in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children and adults between 1980 and 2015. Using the Global Burden of Disease study data and methods, we also quantified the burden of disease related to high body-mass index (BMI), according to age, sex, cause, and BMI in 195 countries between 1990 and 2015. RESULTS In 2015, a total of 107.7 million children and 603.7 million adults were obese. Since 1980, the prevalence of obesity has doubled in more than 70 countries and has continuously increased in most other countries. Although the prevalence of obesity among children has been lower than that among adults, the rate of increase in childhood obesity in many countries has been greater than the rate of increase in adult obesity. High BMI accounted for 4.0 million deaths globally, nearly 40% of which occurred in persons who were not obese. More than two thirds of deaths related to high BMI were due to cardiovascular disease. The disease burden related to high BMI has increased since 1990; however, the rate of this increase has been attenuated owing to decreases in underlying rates of death from cardiovascular disease. CONCLUSIONS The rapid increase in the prevalence and disease burden of elevated BMI highlights the need for continued focus on surveillance of BMI and identification, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based interventions to address this problem. Pandemins påverkan på ungas identitet: En kvalitativ sociologisk studie om nya riskers betydelse för identitetsskapande2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In the field of sociology there is an established idea that risk has importance for identity-building, and existing research shows that risk is a part of transitioning into adulthood. The Covid-19 pandemic has, on the one hand, introduced new risks for young people to consider, and on the other restrictions aiming to prevent the spread of infection. The restrictions have to a varying degree, limited us in everyday life, and constructed new norms which may have influenced youth’s identity-building. This qualitative study aims to examine young people's experience of risk and how those and other experiences during pandemic have affected their identity-building. The results show that youths' understanding of risk was informed by their unique context. Further, the study establishes that young people’s disciplinary attitudes and actions reflected those on the institutional level, whilst other risk behaviour was dependent on the context of the action. Young people have also revealed a level of flexibility and adaptation which enabled them to maintain social practices important for identity-building. Through the integration of feelings of loss and gratitude, establishment of a new everyday life, and wider perspectives on life, young people maintained the feeling of ontological security. Further research should examine how experiences of risk during the pandemic may have long term effects on identity-building, and the possible need for supportive interventions.

    Abstract [sv]

Intersected groups and discriminatory everyday behavior: Evidence from a lost email experiment2021In: Social Psychology, ISSN 1864-9335, E-ISSN 2151-2590, Vol. 52, no 6, p. 351-361Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

De-racialization research suggests that depicting members of ethnic minority groups as gay leads to less stereotypic perceptions oftheir ethnic group. However, whether the consequences of de-racialization translate into real-world behavior is unclear. In a large “lost letter” field experiment (N = 6,654) where an email was ostensibly sent to the wrong recipient by mistake, we investigate whether the relative impact of signaling gayness (vs. heterosexuality) differs for Arab (minority) versus Swedish (majority) senders. The results show clear evidence of ethnic discrimination where Arab (minority) senders receive fewer replies (prosocial response) than Swedish (majority) senders. However, there is no evidence indicating that Arab senders would receive a lower penalty for revealing gayness. Implications for multiple categorization research are discussed.

Crime victims in Indicatorland – Open comparisons in the social services’ work with victim support

Since the 90s there have been extensive changes in the public sector, such as rationalization and increasing demands for documentation and review. The changes have also affected the social services’ victim support work that has increasingly been subject to various forms of regulation, such as requirements for monitoring, evaluation and quality assurance. This article aims to examine one of the monitoring systems applied in the victim support work: the instrument of open comparisons. This article is based on an exploratory study of the local organization of crime prevention in two municipalities and analyses how the processes of open comparisons are organized at local, regional and central levels. The empirical data consists of documents such as legal sources and handbooks from e.g. the National Board of Health and Welfare and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, as well as documents obtained locally in the two municipalities. Furthermore, interviews were conducted with professionals working on different organizational levels.

Analytically the study has been inspired by programme theory, which made it possible to concentrate on clarifying the operational idea in which open comparisons are based and capturing the consequences in the two cases.

The study shows that open comparisons have been implemented without support from existing research. However, strong normative support for open comparisons exists within governmental agencies and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions. They are included as one of many elements of New Public Management and result in changes in the victim support work. In contrast to present visions, the performance is not affected to any significant extent. In contrast, a comprehensive administration is created, where employees of municipalities are supposed to collect data, register information and analyse the results generated by the open comparisons.

Fighting men`s violence against woman in the age of evidence and NPM2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Men's violence against women is a widespread global problem and a serious threat to women's health. This symposium will report from a study in Sweden that studies mechanisms that influence the design of interventions contesting domestic violence in two cities.

The symposiums three presentations will answer the following questions:

    1. Given the fact that the organizations face many different views and ideologies; how does this affect the ways the problem of domestic violence is represented?

    2. In what way affects ideas from performance measurement and new public management the interventions?

    3. In what way are the social services organizing towards an evidence-based practice in this field?

Presentation 1 Interpersonal violence-From policy to local practice

Presentation 2 Open Comparisons in social work

Presentation 3 Negotiating in risk assessment practices

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Max-Weber's methodological essays, published-posthumously as Gesammelte Aufsätze zur Wissenschaftslehre, continue to attract scholarly attention. They also continue to pose formidable problems to a modern reader. Part of the reason for this is that Max Weber both responds to and draws upon scholarly work that has long ceased to be familiar to social scientists. In order to grasp Weber's methodological project, we therefore need to uncover the historical co-ordinates within which it was framed. A framework of this order is to be found in the discourses over method that took place in the human sciences in Germany during the 19th century - particularly in jurisprudence, economics and history. Max Weber's methodological views, however, did not square with any of the positions taken in these debates. He had other methodological convictions. They were partly taken over from Heinrich Rickert, partly from Johannes von Kries. Heinrich Rickert's philosophy of science furnished Weber both with a general theory of science and with a theory of concept formation in the historical sciences, whereas Johannes von Kries provided him with a theory of causality. It can be shown that these theories combine in Max Weber's methodological thought to provide the basis for theoretical notions such as the ideal type - but also that this has implications both for Weber's empirical work and for the characteristic way in which he criticises the different standpoints in the prevailing methodological discourse.
