    Abstract [en]

    Increasing rates of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and younger age at diagnosis pose a challenge to preschool intervention systems. In Sweden, most young autistic children receive intervention service in community-based preschool programs, but no tool is yet available to assess the quality of the preschool learning environment. This study adapted the Autism Program Environment Rating Scale Preschool/Elementary to Swedish community context (APERS-P-SE). Following translation and a multistep modification process, independent experts rated the content validity of the adaptation. Findings indicate high cross-cultural validity of the adapted APERS-P-SE. The cultural adaption process of the APERS-P-SE highlights similarities and differences between the American and Swedish preschool systems and their impact on early ASD intervention.

    Abstract [en]

    Deviant as well as changing auditory distractors interfere with short-term memory. According to the duplex model of auditory distraction, the deviation effect is caused by a shift of attention while the changing-state effect is due to obligatory order processing. This theory predicts that foreknowledge should reduce the deviation effect, but should have no effect on the changing-state effect. We compared the effect of foreknowledge on the two phenomena directly within the same experiment. In a pilot study, specific foreknowledge was impotent in reducing either the changing-state effect or the deviation effect, but it reduced disruption by sentential speech, suggesting that the effects of foreknowledge on auditory distraction may increase with the complexity of the stimulus material. Given the unexpected nature of this finding, we tested whether the same finding would be obtained in (a) a direct preregistered replication in Germany and (b) an additional replication with translated stimulus materials in Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

    Relapse prevention after pain management is a neglected area and Internet-based interventions have the potential to partly fill this gap. A challenge in designing effective relapse prevention program is how to motivate patients to persist throughout the full length of treatment. Following a regular pain management program, 29 participants underwent a 20 week long Internet–based relapse prevention program based on acceptance-oriented CBT. Qualitative analyses showed changes in attitudes towards their pain and body during the course of treatment. Degree of personal commitment in treatment goals seemed to affect gains relating to new perspective on self and future. Therapeutic strategies of defusion and mindfulness seemed to ease perspective changes and persistence to comply. Values interventions are hypothesized to be a plausible therapeutic strategy to engage participants in continuous behavior change. Further studies on non-compliers and drop-outs could enhance understanding of interventions necessary to maintaining motivation. When and how to give therapist support during Internet-based treatment for chronic pain is another area in need of further studies.

    Abstract [en]

    Mental disorders and related behaviors such as suicidality and violence have been associated to dysregulation of e g carbohydrate metabolism. We hypothesized that patients after suicide attempt, compared to healthy controls, would have higher insulin and lower glucagon levels in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid and that these changes would be associated to violent behavior. Twenty-eight medication-free patients (10 women, 18 men), hospitalized after suicide attempt, and 19 healthy controls (7 women, 12 men) were recruited with the aim to study risk factors for suicidal behavior. Psychological/psychiatric assessment was performed with SCID I and II or the SCID interview for healthy volunteers respectively, the Karolinska Interpersonal Violence Scale (KIVS) for assessment of lifetime violence expression behavior, the Montgomery-Asberg-Depression-Scale (MADRS) and the Comprehensive Psychological Rating Scale (CPRS) for symptomatic assessment of depression and appetite. Fasting levels of insulin and glucagon were measured in plasma (P) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Suicide attempters had higher insulin- and lower glucagon-levels in plasma- and CSF compared to controls. Except for P-glucagon these associations remained significant after adjusting for age and/or BMI. Patients reported significantly more expressed interpersonal violence compared to healthy volunteers. Expressed violence was significantly positively correlated with P- and CSF-insulin and showed a significant negative correlation with P-glucagon in study participants. These findings confirm and extend prior reports that higher insulin and lower glucagon levels in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid are associated with suicidal behavior pointing towards a potential autonomic dysregulation in the control of insulin and glucagon secretion in suicidal patients.     The study's purpose was to map differences between individual factors and the perception of the social and organizational work environment among students at Jönköping University. The social and organizational work environment in this study is based on six different segments: demands, control, social support, balance between studies and free time, health and wellbeing and offensive behavior. The study is quantitative and is based on a cross-sectional design with a deductive approach. In March 2017, an online survey was distributed to students with a study pace of 75 % or more at the university. The survey generated 1324 responses with at response rate of 19,3 %. The data were analyzed with Independent Sample t-test, Independent One Way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis ANOVA. The results showed that particularly women, older students, international students who are not part of an exchange program, Swedish students and students from the Health and Technical Schools, perceived the social and organizational work environment more negatively than their comparison groups. The segment, health and wellbeing, showed the lowest mean score of all the segments. The study's results confirmed existing theories with the exceptions that the older students experienced the social and organizational work environment more negatively than the other students, and that the exchange students perceived it more positively. For further research the authors suggests qualitative studies to identify the causes of the differences that showed significant results.

    Feasibility of an email-based electronic screening and brief intervention (e-SBI) to college students in Sweden2006In: Addictive Behaviors, ISSN 0306-4603, Vol. 31, no 5, p. 777-87Article in journal (Refereed)

    An email-based electronic screening and brief intervention (e-SBI) with personalized normative feedback on alcohol habits was offered to all 3,875 second term students at Linköping University, Sweden. The students received an email with a link to a computerized alcohol habit test and were offered personalized feedback directly on the computer screen. The students evaluated the test and were asked to state whether they were going to consider changing or actually change their alcohol habits. The response rate was 44%, with 742 female and 843 male students participating. The students displayed a strong gender difference in drinking pattern. A three-fold higher percentage of males than females were risky drinkers with regard to a high average weekly volume consumption. The gender differences were less pronounced regarding heavy episodic drinking that was reported by 51% of the females and 70.5% of the males. The email-based computerized normative feedback was appreciated by the students and one-third of the females and one-fifth of the males believed that they would benefit from the normative feedback; 8% of the females and 3% of the males believed that they would actually change their habits after the feedback. Students with a risky drinking pattern, previous experiences of blackouts, being dissatisfied with their current drinking and students that had considered to change their habits before the e-SBI, yielded a stronger motivation to change their drinking after having performed the intervention compared to students without such characteristics. The e-SBI with normative feedback was simple to administer and has the potential to be used repeatedly and on a large scale with minimum effort in terms of cost and time.

    Syftet med föreliggande studie var att empiriskt undersöka en teoretisk modell för samband mellan mindfulness och psykologiska färdigheter hos idrottare (Birrer, Röthlin & Morgan 2012) genom att (1) undersöka samband mellan mindfulness och sex påverkansmekanismer samt (2) samband mellan fem aspekter av mindfulness och dessa påverkansmekanismer. De påverkansmekanismer som undersökes var emotionsreglering, klarsynthet, kognitiv acceptans, ältande, flexibilitet och non-attachment. De aspekter av mindfulness som undersöktes var icke-reaktivitet, observerande, beskrivande, agera medvetet och icke-dömande. I studien deltog 82 tävlande idrottare från idrottsföreningar i sydvästra Sverige. Medelåldern var 22,01 år (SD = 4.32) varav 24 kvinnor och 58 män. Frågeformuläret som användes i studien bestod av en sammansatt enkät innehållande sex olika skalor med syfte att mäta mindfulness samt sex påverkansmekanismer. Resultaten visade signifikanta samband mellan självskattad mindfulness och samtliga sex påverkansmekanismer. Regressionsanalys visade att mindfulness var en signifikant prediktor till samtliga påverkansmekanismer. Multipel regressionsanalys visade att aspekten icke-dömande visade sig vara signifikant prediktor för flest påverkansmekanismer och att aspekten observera inte var signifikant prediktor för någon av de sex påverkansmekanismerna. Resultaten diskuterades utifrån teoretiska referensramar och tidigare forskning.

    The aim of the study is to gain an understanding how preschool teachers motivates to their work. What factors increases or reduces the motivation in the workplace, and what is the significance of the work design for motivation and job satisfaction? The study was based on Herzberg (1993) two factor theory on motivation and Hackman and Oldmans The Job Characteristics Model (Robbins & Judge, 2007) explaining that the work arrangement can be seen as the basis of how motivated the personal is. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews. Six preschool teachers were interviewed about the experience whether job satisfaction and motivation arises. Results show that as a primary basis for job satisfaction is a good relationship with colleagues. Results also show that children's development is as a basis for the respondents motivation in their professional. The children developing and the social support motivate the respondents to continue their effort and also motivates them to remain in the workplace. Besides positive factors results show inhibitory factors of motivation. Things such as to little time for planning and for educational discussions. Furthermore, the interviews think that too much responsibility and high demands in relation to the resources they have to provide is also something that inhibition their motivation. The results have been processed with Herzberg (1993) two factors theory on motivation and job satisfaction. The design of work has been compared to Hackman and Oldman (Robbins & Judge, 2007) theory.

    Studiens syfte var att undersöka ett urval erfarna HR-representanter inom offentlig verksamhets upplevelser av att arbeta med stressrelaterad ohälsa. För studien valdes en kvalitativ forskningsmetod bestående av semistrukturerade intervjuer med efterföljande tematisk analys. Ett snöbollsurval ledde till åtta deltagare (n=8) fördelat på sju organisationer. Stressrelaterad ohälsa är en vanlig orsak till sjukskrivning i dagens samhälle och en del i gällande arbetsmiljölagstiftning. Analysen resulterade i fyra övergripande teman; stress, arbetsmiljö, ambitionsnivå och HR-funktionens roll. Resultatet visade att stress är ett komplext ämne. Många gånger beror stress på annat än arbetets utformning såsom till exempel privatliv eller höga ambitioner hos medarbetare. Den sociala och organisatoriska arbetsmiljön spelar också roll för den upplevda stressen och det är HR:s uppgift att ge chefer rätt förutsättningar för att bedriva arbetet mot stressrelaterad ohälsa.

    Unrestricted or so-called trimmed mopeds and speeding are experienced as an increasing traffic safety problem. There is a risk of an increased number of seriously injured and casualties among adolescents as a consequence of the increased number of mopeds found in traffic today and the higher speeds they are driven at. One common police action to reduce trimming is to follow the moped riders who are suspected of altering their vehicles. This can lead to "chase situations" which increase the risk to both moped riders and fellow road-users. One purpose of this report is to study the effects of an alternative way of working with the moped problems by the police in four different towns and by interviews, observations and a questionnaire study broaden our knowledge about attitudes to moped riding and trimming among youths. The results showed that the efforts of the police in the experiment towns had not had any effect on the attitudes and the points of view of the youths towards traffic safety. One possible reason for this is that the method used is too new and that it was not extensive enough. Parents have an effect on the attitude of the youths towards trimming. The parents of those who trim seem to have a more tolerant attitude towards trimming. The results from the questionnaire study show that those that had driven but do not a moped but did not have av moped of their own, as well as those who have a trimmed moped of their own were more positive towards taking risks in traffic, would consider driving at faster speeds and had more experience of traffic offenses. In addition, they are of the opinion that parents, friends and fellow roadusers find it acceptable to exceed the speed limits. Furthermore, these two groups were not as involved in organised leisure activities as the other two groups, their parents were not as strict, grades were not considered as important and they indicated to a greater degree that attending school is difficult or boring. Based on this study, it can be concluded that trimming is not an isolated behaviour but related to a certain lifestyle. In order to reduce trimming an increased understanding of those mechanisms which determine the behaviour of the target groups are needed as well as improved methods to detect trimming. Qualitative studies could be used to discuss the problem with parents, youths and those living in special residential areas where the problem is experienced as being widespread. It might also be interesting to analyse incoming calls/complaints to police communication centres and evaluate the effects police work has on the number of trimmed mopeds over a period of time.

    Background and objectives

    Clients' knowledge about their condition and treatment is considered crucial for general health improvement, and knowledge acquisition is an essential part in internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (ICBT). Yet, little is known about the role of knowledge and how it influences treatment outcome. This study aimed to examine if explicit knowledgeincreased following ICBT for adolescent depression, if knowledge gainwould be associated with symptom reduction, and if pre-existing knowledge predicted changes in depressive symptoms.

    Methods

    Seventy-one adolescents were randomised to a therapist-supported ICBT or a attention control condition. A measure of depression (BDI-II) and a knowledge test dealing with depression, comorbid anxiety, and its CBT-treatment were administered before and after treatment.

    Results

    Significant improvements in knowledge were observed following ICBT compared to the attention control (between-group Cohen's d = 1.25, 95% CI [0.67–1.79]). On average, participants in the treatment group answered 1.4 more questions correctly at post treatment compared to the control group. No relation between change in knowledge and change in depressive symptoms could be observed. Knowledge scores at baseline were high for both groups, with participants answering approximately 75% of the questions correct. A higher level of initial knowledge level predicted poorer treatment response (Parson's r = −0.38, p = .048).

    Conclusions

    The findings indicate that knowledge about basic concepts and principles about depression, anxiety, and CBT increases following ICBT. This increase in knowledge was not related to change in depressive symptoms, indicating that knowledge is a different construct. The results also suggest that clients who are more knowledgeable prior to treatment might benefit less from ICBT. In sum, the results highlight the need to further examine the role of knowledge in ICBT.

    Syftet var att undersöka hur barn i olika familjeformer ser på familjer, sin egen och andras. Intervjuer har genomförts med sammanlagt 22 barn varav elva kom från familjer med olikkönade och sammanboende föräldrar som fått barn på egen hand, nedan kallade relationsbarn, och övriga elva kom från familjer med en frivilligt ensamstående mamma som skaffat barn med hjälp av assisterad befruktning, nedan kallade femmisbarn. Barnens ålder varierade från tre år och tio månader till nio år och nio månader. Studien kan ses som en del av barndomsforskningen, där barns ses som kompetenta aktörer vars röster förtjänar att lyftas fram. En semistrukturerad intervjuguide låg till grund för intervjuerna där barnen ombads att måla sin egen och en annan familj. Barnens berättelser har analyserats med hjälp av tematisk analys.

    Resultatet visar att femmis- och relationsbarnens berättelser huvudsakligen liknar varandra samtidigt som vissa skillnader framkommer mellan grupperna. Det förkommer också stora individuella skillnader inom grupperna. En kärnfamiljsnorm är tydligt framträdande i både barnens prat och teckningar, samtidigt som barnen visar på en öppenhet kring olika familjeformer. I relationsbarnens berättelser omnämns far- och morföräldrar, föräldrars syskon och kusiner som släktingar medan femmisbarnen i större utsträckning inkluderar dessa samt husdjur som medlemmar i sina familjer. Gemensamt för alla barnen är att deras berättelser om familjelivet utgår från barnet och har barnet i fokus. I såväl femmis- som relationsbarnens prat om mammor och pappor framträder en bild av traditionella könsroller.

    Såväl relations- som femmisbarnens berättelser om familj är mestadels i linje med tidigare forskning kring barns syn på familj. Femmisbarnens inklusion av såväl husdjur som släktingar i familjen, kan vara ett resultat av att nätverket får en större betydelse hos de ensamstående föräldrarna vilket även setts i tidigare forskning. Den kärnfamiljsnorm som blev tydlig i barnens prat kan ses som en avspegling av de rådande normerna i samhället. Trots en ökad variation gällande familjeformer är kärnfamiljen fortfarande ett rådande ideal.

    Objective, easy to use, easy to comprehend, high face- validity assessment methods for measuring shared awareness in teams are hard to find. This paper describes an experiment where a new measure called Shared Priorities, which is based on ranking of self-generated strategic items, is tested. Trained teams were compared to non-trained teams in a dynamic problem-solving task in terms of performance and shared awareness. The shared priorities measure was used alongside other, well-documented measures of team awareness based on self-rating. The results show that the Shared Priorities measure correlate with performance and could also distinguish between trained and non-trained teams. However, the Shared Priorities measure did not correlate with the other team measures, suggesting that it captures a different quality of team work than the self-rating measures. Further, the shared priorities measure was found to be easily administered and gained a high user acceptance.

    Assessing Command and Control Effectiveness: Dealing with a Changing World offers a description of the current state of Command and Control (C2) research in imperfect settings, showing how a research process should assess, analyse and communicate results to the development cycle of methods, work, manning and C2-technology. Special attention is given to the development of C2 research methods to meet the current and coming needs. The authors also look forward towards a future where effective assessment of C2 abilities are even more crucial, for instance in agile organisations.

    The purpose of the C2 research is to improve the process and make it more effective while still saving time and money. Research methods have to be chosen carefully to be effective and simple, yet provide results of high quality. The methodological concerns are a major consideration when working under such circumstances. Furthermore, there is often a need for a swift iterative development cycle, and thus a demand to quickly deliver results from the research process. This book explains how field research experimentation can be quick, simple and effective, being able to draw valid conclusions even when sample sizes are small and resources are limited, collecting empirical data using measures and procedures that are minimally intrusive.

    The aim of this retrospective qualitative study is to increase knowledge about three sisters' experience of the development of their relationships before and after both parents death. A qualitative research method was chosen. Two sibling groups of three sisters in middle age 49-62 years were interviewed. The data were analyzed with empirical thematic analysis. The result showed a structure with four different time intervals with fifteen themes. Despite the extremely strong dysfunctional nature of the relations in their origin families the sisters caught sight of each other when the parents died. The sibling relationships have been overshadowed by the parents' presence and their problems. Relationships and roles changed in the process before and after parental death between the sisters and matured into something else. This runs as a thread throughout the material; to exist in life, sibling relationships are reviewed, and it leads to intimacy, autonomy and differentiation, an acceptance that everyone is different in the triad that guides them to protect each other even more in middle age.

    To describe the development of words and sentences in Swedish children 16-28 months old, 900 parental reports on 336 children were analyzed. Subjects were randomly selected from the national birth register, and there was a response rate of 88%. The assessments were made using the Swedish Early Communicative Development Inventory-words and sentences (SECDI-w&s).

    Age-based norms for productive vocabulary, pragmatic skills, grammar skills, and maximum length of utterance (MaxLU) were determined. We describe the development of feedback morphemes, semantic categories, and single words and tasks. Correlation across measures was significant, and especially strong between vocabulary size and grammar skills. Optimized positive predictive values were high for 25 to 28 month predictions (71%-88%), and vocabulary scores were found to be of particular predictive importance. No significant gender differences were detected. The clinical relevance of the instrument is discussed.

    Experiencing a sexual abuse creates a life-long traumatic memory. The life-long effect of such abuse on sexuality, well-being, the risk of contracting cervical cancer, or problems after treatment for cervical cancer is not known. A population-based follow-up study in 1996-97 that used an anonymous postal questionnaire for data collection, 256 women with stage IB-IIA cervical cancer registered in 1991-92 in Sweden, and 350 women without cervical cancer frequency matched for age and region of residence, provided information. Among the women with a history of cervical cancer and the control women, 46 (18%) and 50 (15%), respectively, reported a history of sexual abuse. The follow-up was 1-70 years after the sexual abuse. The relative risk (with 95% confidence interval) of decreased well-being was 2.4 (1.1-5.2) among controls and 2.7 (1.1-6.4) among former cervical cancer patients. A history of both sexual abuse and cervical cancer gave a relative risk of 30.0 (7.0-129.0) for superficial dyspareunia. Sexual abuse increased the risk of sexual problems after treatment. The sexually abused cervical cancer patients were generally less willing than other patients to trade off possible maximal survival and forgo parts of the treatment. A history of sexual abuse and cervical cancer are both independent risk factors for sexual dysfunction and decreased well-being, and there may be a large synergy when both factors are combined. Diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer may be improved by recognition of a sexual abuse history.

    Abstract [en]

    Introduction: Depression is one of the most common psychiatric symptoms among Swedish adolescents and young adults. Attachment Based Family Therapy ( ABFT ) focuses specifically on depression and suicidal young people. This paper will focus on the work with emotions in family therapy/ABFT.

    Question: In order to explore how psychotherapists that follow ABFT manual can work to deepen the emotional level of the family members. Is it possible to see conections between therapist’s interventions and the emotional deepening in the family?

    Method: Qualitative case study on a filmed psychotherapy, a total of 18 sessions. The family consists of a youth and his or her parents. A number of episodes have been selected where the psychotherapist's interventions and what happened in each episode have been studied with thematic analysis.

    Result: To connect familymembers to each other awokes most emotions within the family. Meetings occur that are interpreted to be healing and to have long term effects at the family members' relationships.

    Discussion: The studys result are linked to Daniel Stern's theory of "moments of meeting", intersubjectivity in the family and family therapy unique opportunity to work with emotions in the presence of the objects that it actually applies to.

    Abstract [en]

    The movements of a person's eyes are an interesting factor to study in different research areas where attention is important, for example when driving. In 2004 the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) introduced Simulator III - their third generation of driving simulators. Inside Simulator III a camera based eye tracking system is installed that records the eye movements of the driver. To be able to be used, the raw data from the eye tracking system needs to be analyzed and concentrated into a number of measures relevant for the research at VTI. This thesis presents methods to analyze the data from the eye tracker and to transform it into something more useful. A world coordinate system is set up to connect the eye tracking system with the real world in a consistent way. A set of measures is collected, mainly from ISO and SAE standards, to be used as output from the analysis. Finally an application is developed for performing the analysis. The application reads the data from the eye tracker and the simulator, analyzes the data, and outputs a set of eye movement measures usable for the researchers at VTI.

    Although non-consciously perceived information has previously been assumed to be short-lived (<500 ms), recent findings show that non-consciously perceived information can be maintained for at least 15s Such findings can be explained as working memory without a conscious experience of the information to be retained. However, whether or not working memory can operate on non-consciously perceived information remains controversial, and little is known about the nature of such non-conscious visual short-term memory (VSTM). Here we used continuous flash suppression to render stimuli non-conscious, to investigate the properties of non-consciously perceived representations in delayed match-to-sample (DMS) tasks. In Experiment I we used variable delays (5 or 15s) and found that performance was significantly better than chance and was unaffected by delay duration, thereby replicating previous findings. In Experiment II the DMS task required participants to combine information of spatial position and object identity on a trial-by-trial basis to successfully solve the task. We found that the conjunction of spatial position and object identity was retained, thereby verifying that non-conscious, trial-specific information can be maintained for prospective use. We conclude that our results are consistent with a working memory interpretation, but that more research is needed to verify this interpretation.

    The aim of this study was to investigate employees' work satisfaction at a construction company and if the employees' working position, age and length of service were the basis for differences in work satisfaction. The participants in this study included all employees (= 116) at a Swedish medium-sized construction company and the respondents were selected through a convenience sample. To collect data, the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (Weiss, Dawis, England & Lofqvist, 1967) was used and it consists of three subscales: intrinsic, extrinsic and general work satisfaction. The study's reliability was ensured by Cronbach’s Alpha, which showed .83. Continuously, the result was obtained through a one-way ANOVA analysis for all variables. The results showed that the work position had a significant impact on intrinsic work satisfaction (= .004) and general work satisfaction (= .036), and that age had a significant impact on intrinsic work satisfaction (= .009) and general work satisfaction (= .020). The study concluded that length of service did not have a significant impact on work satisfaction (= .550, n.s.). This suggests that work position and age are relevant factors in relation to employee's work satisfaction and since previous research has shown that work satisfaction contributes to countless benefits, these factors should not be neglected by organisations.

    I Sverige beräknas 17 % av befolkningen ha en hörselnedsättning, vilket innebär att det är den vanligaste sensoriska funktionsnedsättningen. Idag finns det en mängd studier som visar att hörselnedsättning är relaterat till sämre psykisk hälsa. Acceptans av sin hörselnedsättning har visat sig vara positivt för hörselnedsatta och samvarierar med hjälpsökande. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) är en transdiagnostisk behandling där psykopatologi antas bero på en hög grad av upplevelsemässigt undvikande och fusion med tankar. Målet i ACT är att öka psykologisk flexibilitet där acceptans är en betydande komponent. Denna explorativa studie undersökte förändringsprocesser i ACT för personer med hörselnedsättning där utfallet var känslomässig och social anpassning för hörselnedsättningen (HHIE-S). De förändringsprocesser som prövades var acceptans (HAQ), som tidigare visat på medierande effekt för ACT, samt två alternativa förändringsprocesser; self-efficacy (HSE-4) och upplevd stress (PSS-4). Behandlingen bestod av åtta internetadministrerade moduler givna med behandlarstöd där veckovisa mätningar av förändringsprocesser och utfall användes. Studiens resultat visar att behandlingsgruppen upplevde marginellt signifikant mindre problem med känslomässig och social anpassning för hörselnedsättningen (HHIE-S). Studiens resultat pekar på att hörselrelaterad acceptans (HAQ) och self- efficacy (HSE-4) medierar behandlingens effekt på deltagarnas känslomässiga och sociala anpassning för hörselnedsättning (HHIE-S). Således tillför denna studie ytterligare belägg för acceptans som förändringsprocess i ACT. Även self-efficacy kan vara en intressant mediator att beakta i fortsatt forskning.

    Abstract [en]

    Investigated the relation among response inhibition, hyperactivity, and conduct problems in a nonclinical sample of 115 preschool children, using 2 different types of go/no-go tasks well as a Stroop-like task. In line with the assumption that hyperactivity is related to disinhibition, the results showed that it was the measures of response inhibition, and not other performance measures, that were related to teacher ratings of hyperactivity. There was also a significant relation between response inhibition and conduct problems. Interestingly, the correlation between response inhibition and conduct problems was not significant when partialling out the effect of hyperactivity, whereas the correlation between inhibition and hyperactivity did remain significant when controlling for conduct problems. Although the association between inhibition, hyperactivity, and conduct problems appeared to be partly different for boys and girls, these differences were not statistically significant.

    Drawing on stress and justice literature, we argue that perceptions of job insecurity induce feelings of low procedural justice, which has immediate and prolonged negative effects on health (depressive symptoms, sleep difficulties). Moreover, we explore whether the strength of the job insecurity–justice relationship differs between individuals as a function of their average level of job insecurity over time. Finally, we explore whether the procedural justice–health relationship differs between individuals as a function of variability in justice perceptions over time. We analyzed Swedish panel data from permanent workers over four consecutive waves (with a two‐year time lag between waves) using multilevel analysis, separating within‐ and between‐person variance. Results showed that job insecurity associated negatively with procedural justice at the same time point for all waves. Prolonged effects were less stable. We found immediate (but not prolonged) indirect effects of job insecurity on health outcomes via procedural justice. Average levels in job insecurity over time moderated the within‐person job insecurity–justice relationship. However, variability in procedural justice over time did not moderate the within‐person justice–health relationship. In conclusion, disentangling within‐ and between‐person variability of job insecurity and justice perceptions contributes to the understanding of health effects.

    This study investigates whether temporary contract volition and workers' expectations for contract renewal are boundary conditions to explain differences in temporary workers' job insecurity feelings and well-being. It is hypothesized that (1) low volition through higher job insecurity indirectly associates with lower well-being and that (2) temporary workers' expectations of contract renewal weakens the links between both low volition and high job insecurity and high job insecurity and impaired well-being. Results based on an international data set of 1755 temporary workers employed in the education, manufacturing, and service sectors supported the first hypothesis and partly also the second. More specifically, low preferences for temporary contracts associated via higher job insecurity with lower job satisfaction, impaired health, and higher irritation. Contract expectations placed a boundary condition upon this indirect relation; however, the negative association between high job insecurity and impaired well-being was not weakened but strengthened. In conclusion, particularly temporary workers with low contract volition and high job insecurity feelings, who have high expectations for contract renewal are at risk for impaired well-being. Hence, this study sheds light onto the question how volition for temporary work and expected contract renewal relate to job insecurity and associate with individual well-being.

    Objective. The aim of this study was to further develop and investigate a newly constructed 15-item questionnaire on strategies for coping with dental treatment, used by fearful adult patients undergoing regular dental care and those with phobic avoidance. Materials and Methods. The dental coping strategy questionnaire (DCSQ-15) was distributed to 77 individuals with dental phobic avoidance and 94 fearful patients undergoing regular dental care. Previous analyses of a 20-item coping questionnaire (DCSQ-20) revealed that 2 of 4 identified factors predicted regularity or phobic avoidance of dental care. However, one of these factors was considered related to catastrophizing thoughts and not to coping strategies and it was therefore removed in the present study. Results. The reduced 15-item questionnaire was analyzed to identify its factor structure and a 5-factor solution was found. The five factors were labeled (i) 'self-efficacy', (ii) 'self-distraction', (iii) 'distancing', (iv) 'praying' and (v) 'optimism'. The factors of 'praying' and 'optimism' correlated significantly with dental anxiety and were assessed significantly higher and lower respectively, among individuals with phobic avoidance. A logistic regression analysis revealed that 'optimism', together with gender and dental anxiety, was predictive of the regularity or phobic avoidance of dental care.

    Dental fear is a common and widespread problem, which can cause severe stress. Even so, most patients with dental fear undergo regular dental treatment in spite of their fear and many enjoy good oral health. The aim of this study was to obtain a deeper understanding of how patients with dental fear manage to undergo dental treatment. Fourteen patients with dental fear, who undergo regular dental care, were interviewed. Qualitative analysis of the transcribed interviews was performed according to the principles of grounded theory. A conceptual framework was generated, and the main concern was identified as making dental care possible – a mutual affair. Four additional categories explained how patients handled their dental fear and how dental care became possible. The strategies were labelled taking part in a mental wrestling match, trust-filled interaction with dental staff, striving for control and seeking and/or receiving social support. The results showed that making dental care possible for patients with dental fear is a mutual challenge that requires interplay between dental staff and patients, involving verbal and non-verbal communication reflecting respect, attention, and empathy. Moreover, a balance between nearness and distance and between professional and personal treatment is required.

    Being capable of getting new employment may enable an employee to cope with turbulent situations or deteriorating job conditions. Individuals who have higher perceived employability are likely to appraise a situation at work more favourably, and consequently experience better health and wellbeing. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between perceived employability and subsequent health, while controlling for baseline health, background factors, and work environment exposures. The study is based on 53 items in the National Working Life Cohort in Sweden from two data collections (2004 and 2005), comprising 1918 individuals. Forced entry hierarchical regression analysis showed that, after controlling for demographics, psychological demands, control, and ergonomic exposures, perceived employability was positively associated with global health and mental well-being, but unrelated to physical complaints. When baseline health status was added, perceived employability was still a significant predictor of two out of three outcome variables. Individuals with higher perceived employability had a tendency to report better health and well-being a year later. It is concluded that how an employee perceives his or her possibilities in regard to acquiring new employment is relevant for well-being at a later stage. Perceived employability, which has been little studied before, is therefore a useful concept in health promotion, both at the individual and at the organizational level.

    Background

    Several researchers have studied atmospheric factors like crowding, col-ours, music and olfactory cues and tested their effect on shopping behav-iour. In the particular case of the influence of music in consumers‟ be-haviour, several notable observations have been made.

    Yet, the majority of the studies have focused on the phenomena of the music and the influences of its different factors towards consumers‟ be-haviour but little research has focused on managerial awareness of such effects on its consumers. Thus, there are still a lot of doubts about man-ager‟s practices and perception regarding the use and effects of atmos-pheric music.

    In line with the approaches mentioned above, this thesis intends to fill this gap in the literature through the attainment of two objectives: the first one is to study what exactly clothing retailers are doing in terms of atmospheric music and the second objective is to examine their implicit theories about the impact of the music on consumers‟ shopping behav-iour.

    Purpose

    The purpose of this thesis is to study managerial practices and percep-tions of how music affects customers‟ shopping behaviour in clothing retailers in Sweden.

    Method

    This study employs a qualitative method. The Data was obtained through semi-structured face to face interviews with managers and staff of clothing retailers in Jönköping. These interviews were conducted in clothing stores located in the two main commercial areas of the city where the majority of the stores were located.

    Conclusions

    Our research found that in the big retailers the atmospheric music is used in a more systematically way than in the small ones. This level of sys-tematization is directly related to the level of centralization in decision-making and to the size of the store.

    On the other hand, with regards to our second objective we found thatnot only managers but also the salespersons working in the clothing stores have a high degree of knowledge about how music affects their customer´s shopping behavior. Some of their implicit theories coincided with what previous researchers have found while others didn´t.

    Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term outcomes 1 year after undertaking an audiologist-guided Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (iCBT) intervention for tinnitus. Secondary aims were to identify any predictors of outcome and whether there were any unwanted events related to undertaking iCBT for tinnitus. Method: Participants who had previously undertaken a randomized iCBT efficacy trial for tinnitus were invited to participate. Of the 146 who were initially randomized for the efficacy trial, 104 participants completed the 1-year post-intervention assessment measures. The primary outcome was a change in tinnitus distress as assessed by the Tinnitus Functional Index. Secondary assessment measures were included for insomnia, anxiety, depression, hearing handicap, hyperacusis, cognitive failures, and satisfaction with life. An intention-to-treat analysis using repeated-measures analysis of variance and hierarchical multiple regression was used for statistical analysis. Unwanted effects were categorized according to the unwanted events checklist. Results: Undertaking iCBT for tinnitus led to significant improvements 1 year post-intervention for tinnitus and related difficulties, for example, insomnia, anxiety, depression, hearing handicap, hyperacusis, and life satisfaction. The best predictors of improving tinnitus severity at 1-year post-intervention were greater baseline tinnitus severity scores, reading more of the modules, and higher satisfaction with the intervention. Unwanted events were reported by 11% of the participants and were more likely to be reported by women than men. These events were related to worsening of symptoms, the emergence of new symptoms, negative well-being, and prolongation of treatment. Conclusions: The clinical benefits of audiologist-guided iCBT for tinnitus and tinnitus-related difficulties were sustained 1 year post-intervention. Predictors of outcome indicated that the intervention is applicable to a wide range of participants regardless of their demographic backgrounds. Attempts should be made to minimize unwanted events in subsequent trials.
