The impact of different organizational cultures on IT outsourcing relationship management2013In: International Journal of Innovation in the Digital Economy, ISSN 1947-8305, Vol. 4, no 2, p. 50-66Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Globalization has affected the organizations in many aspects such as structure, architecture, internal/external strategies and sourcing management. Outsourcing is one of the recent business strategies used to provide IT needs via external agents. The relationship between the service buyer and provider companies is a constituent playing a significant role in IT outsourcing success or failure. This research has a focus on the influence of organizational culture of buyer companies on the specific factors of trust, cooperation, communication and commitment in their relationship with the IT service provider. Two explorative case studies are done in global companies using ITO which revealed the presence of organizational culture effect. Particularly, being innovative, having open discussion as an organizational culture and looking for extending contracts with providers as a strategy, appeared as the major difference between the two cases organizational culture; which influences the studied factors of ITO relationship in this research.

Facing The Digitalization Challenge: Why Organizational Culture Matters and How It Influences IT Governance Performance2017In: Information Systems Development: Advances in Methods, Tools and Management: Proceedings / [ed] N. Abstract [en]

Today it is not possible for the companies to compete without having IT as a strategic driver. That is why IT governance becomes crucial for managers to bring the most value from IT to the business. Additionally organizational culture is an important factor and often blamed when IT governance projects fail. However little in-depth research investigated how the organizational culture changes can improve the IT governance performance. This research is a case study of the IT department of a large company attempting to improve the IT governance while facing the digitalization challenge. In this case the IT department has an organizational culture change journey seeking to improve the IT governance performance. The results indicate that the initial clan culture orientation of the IT department has led to a successful IT governance performance in cost-effective use of IT. Furthermore, adhocracy is identified as preferred culture for improving IT governance for growth.

Culture Influence on IT Governance: What We Have Learned?2017In: Organizational Culture and Behavior: Concepts, Methodologies, Tools, and Applications, IGI Global, 2017, no 2017Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Managers face enormous challenges today to plan the decision rights and responsibilities in order to reach desired IT behaviors which are aligned with business objectives of organizations. This is known as IT governance and is ranked as one of the firms' top concerns. Not surprisingly, it is crucial for organizations to find the affecting factors on IT governance and solve the problems associated with it. Culture in national, organizational or group level is an affecting factor in organizations that can play a role in IT governance and this role is rarely explored in academic research. This paper provides a literature review investigating the influence of culture on IT governance. The research purpose is to identify how culture and IT governance in the companies can be linked together and promote this area for future research. The literature review is done systematically and the findings are classified by using an IT governance framework with three main components of structures, processes and relational mechanisms. The results indicate there is an influence from national and organizational culture on IT governance. However, the number of studies is very few and there is still a lack of knowledge on how culture can influence IT governance. This research calls upon a further research on culture impact on achieving an effective IT governance implementation in organizations.

IT governance is one of the top concerns of organizations today seeking to gain value from their IT investments and create competitive advantage. Organizational culture on the other hand is one of the various factors influencing IT governance performance. However there is not much research conducted to understand this topic deeply. This research thus, is exploring the influence of organizational culture on four IT governance performance outcomes through a case study in IT department of a large Swedish company. The results provide evidence that organizational culture is influencing IT governance performance. Specifically the current clan culture orientation of the IT department has led to a successful IT governance performance in cost-effective use of IT. Furthermore adhocracy as the preferred culture is identified to influence IT governance in effective use of IT for growth which is not so successful with the current clan culture.

IT Organizational Structure Relationship with IT Governance Performance: Case of a Public Organization2017In: Information Technology Governance in Public Organizations: Theory and Practice / [ed] Lazar Rusu, Gianluigi Viscusi, Cham, Switzerland: Springer, 2017, no 0, p. 229-252Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Information Technology (IT) is widely used in organizations and managers continue to struggle with how to govern IT. IT governance concerns the decision rights and division of responsibilities to achieve value from IT investments. Any IT governance approach is incorporated into a given organizational structure. However in the particular context of public organizations, there is little research on IT organizational structure relationship with IT governance performance. In this research, a case study is done in a public organization to find out how suitable is the organizational structure of the IT department is in relation with the IT governance performance. The results reveal that the IT department organizational structure needs to suit the IT governance performance desired outcomes. In this case, operating as a public organization has actuated the organization to focus on IT governance outcome of effective use of IT for growth. This together with the IT governance archetypes of this public organization for different IT decisions led the IT department leaders to adopt a matrix organizational structure.

How Does the Organizational Culture of Collaborative Networks Influence IT Governance Performance in a Large Organization?2018In: Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences 2018 (HICSS-51), 2018, p. 4941-4951Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In today's complex organizations, IT governance is an important managerial challenge. IT governance deals with decisions and responsibilities concerning IT. There are many factors influencing IT governance. One factor that has remained relatively unexplored by academic research is that of organizational culture. This research explores the influence of the organizational culture of collaborative networks on IT governance performance. A case study was conducted in a large complex company with several networks. The findings indicated that the networks desire different organizational culture types based on their priorities for IT governance outcomes. A clan organizational culture is desired when aiming for effective use of IT for asset utilization and cost effective use of IT. An adhocracy culture is desired when prioritizing the effective use of IT for business growth. Finally a combination of market and hierarchy organizational culture is desired when seeking effective use of IT for business flexibility and cost cutting.

Nature Interpretation for Children and Young People in the Nordic Countries2013Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This TEMA-Nord report is a result of a one-year project with all of the Nordic countries participating. The primary goal of the project has been to collect, develop and mediate a series of good examples of how nature interpretation, aimed at children and young people, can encourage children's understanding of nature, and inspire them to involve themselves with questions on humans nature and thus help contribute to sustainable development. Several issues should be considered when planning nature interpretation activities if nature interpretation aims to lead to sustainable development. These points of view are concerned especially with how nature interpreters can encourage children and young people to take ownership, to be involved with their body and mind, and to reflect and put the experience and the activities in nature into a wider context.

    Abstract [sv]

Analysen resulterade i fem slutgiltiga kategorier.

The science systems in Russia and, even more so, the Baltic States have undergone radical change in the years following the break-up of the Soviet Union. Although this report does not aim to provide a thorough description of the Soviet science system1, it is nevertheless useful to give a very brief outline of the structures which Baltic and Russian policy-makers were confronting at the outset of systemic reforms in the early 1990s.

For Children in Our Neighbourhood: An evaluation of the Nordic Action Plan for Children and Young Adults at Risk in the Adjacent Areas2005Other (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

The Nordic Action Plan for Children and Young Adults in the Adjacent Areas was launched in 1999 in order to contribute to an improvement of the living conditions of young risk groups in the Baltic states and North-West Russia. More than 400 small and large projects have received funding from the programme since then. The present evaluation of the programme has been carried out by the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research (NIBR). The evaluation team recommends a continuation of the programme founded on its achievements in focusing on risk groups, keeping a cross-sectoral approach, involving the policy level in the adjacent area countries, emphasising competence transfer and capacity building, and stimulating an interest in Nordic approaches and models in work with the risk groups. At the same time the evaluators suggest that in the future more emphasis should be put on a further institutionalisation of the programme, it should be used more actively to build partnerships in the region, more attention should be paid to the human resources in the projects, and dissemination activities should be given a more prominent place.

Going Nordic – A NordForsk user survey: A survey among participants in NordForsk and NorFA networks and research training courses 1999-20052006Report (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

This survey conducted among participants in Nordic research network and research training course activities in the 1999-2005 period shows that 90% of the project participants continue collaborating after Nordic funding has ended.

One in five respondents have applied for EU funding as a direct result of the Nordic collaboration.

More than half the activities included partners from the Baltic countries, 28% involved partners from Russia.

Eight in ten would find it impossible to carry out their activity without the support fromNordForsk (or former NorFA).

Most respondents find the application procedures clear and easily accessible. NordForsk is not perceived to be overly bureaucratic, and most people are satisfied with their communication with the responsible NordForsk staff.

    Abstract [en]

Before 1970, special institutions, often prison-like, were built for the severely dependent. The effect of this type of treatment, often lasting for months or even years, was hard to document scientifically. During the 1970s several steps were taken towards a more preventive strategy that involved delivery of alcohol interventions in general health care settings, particularly within primary health care. The World Health Organization's (WHO) introduction of the concepts of hazardous and harmful drinking represented a shift from the traditional dichotomous view of individuals being alcoholic-or-not to a continuum where, in line with Rose's "prevention paradox", a large number of people with low risk may give rise to more cases of disease than the small number with high risk. The need for efficient methods to detect persons with various degrees of alcohol risk was evident, and a WHO multinational project that resulted in the publication of AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders identification Test) was carried out in the mid 1980s. The usefulness of this principle of case finding was then investigated in a subsequent multinational WHO project of brief intervention, as well as in several other similar projects. Many of these projects have proven quite efficient, but screening and brief intervention for alcohol problems is still not standard procedure in primary health care. The paper discusses some of the reasons why.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our essay is to investigate the discourse of foreign policy from a Swedish perspective. In this essay we explore how Swedish politicians discuss the Swedish foreign policy of today and of the future. The study is based on interviews with seven members of The Advisory Council on Foreign Affairs of the Swedish Riksdag. The point of departure for our analysis of these members’ narratives is discourse analysis and discourse theory. In history Swedish foreign policy has been associated with neutrality and the work for important values such as human rights and disarmament. However, as a consequence of the development of a common foreign and security policy for Europe, there is a debate concerning what Swedish foreign policy is today. Furthermore, there is today an academic debate about how foreign policy is to be understood in a more and more internationalized world. This makes our study of the understanding of foreign policy of Swedish politicians highly legitimate.

In our study we show that both unity and difference of opinion is present in the discourse of foreign policy that the interviewees give voice to. During our interviews we found that foreign policy was defined as relations between states and that the right of states to pursue foreign policy was commonly seen as derived from the thought that citizens of a state share a common identity. During the interviews it also became obvious that feelings of belonging to a certain group were thought to affect European foreign policy cooperation. To sum up the results of our study we conclude that a deeply rooted sense of identity seem to be very influential when it comes to the understanding of foreign policy.

    Abstract [en]

In Argentina, Pentecostalism had a breakthrough in the early 1980s, and today more than 10 per cent of the population are Pentecostals. The revival coincided with a socio-political transformation of Argentinean society. After half a century of dictatorships and Peronism, democracy was restored, and structural changes paved the way for a certain “autonomisation” of politics, law, economy, science and religion. The "new" form of society that developed resembles what in this study is called a Western model, which to a large degree is currently being diffused on a global scale. This work examines the new religious sphere and how Pentecostals relate to society at large, and the political and judicial sphere in particular.

Social systems theory and an idea of communication as constitutive of social spheres, such as religious, political and judicial ones, form the theoretical foundation for the study. Methods that have been used are fieldwork, interviews and analyses of written material. It is concluded that evangelisation and transformation are of major concern to Pentecostals in contemporary Argentina and that this follows a global trend. Evangelisation has always been important to, even a hallmark of, Pentecostalism. What has become as important is the urge for transformation, of the individual, the family and society. This leads to increased socio-political engagement. However, Pentecostals do not have a “fixed” idea of how society should be organised, i.e., they do not yet have a full-fledged political theology, a public theology or what could be called a Pentecostal ideology. This is mainly because they experience a lack of “compatibility” between the Pentecostal and the political communication. Their approaches to socio-political concerns seem to be based on an understanding of certain “values” as the fundamental building block of society.

    Abstract [en]

The structural anisotropy of various poly(alkylthiophene) films have been studied by X-ray diffraction, using both conventional methods and synchrotron radiation at grazing incidence. Solution-cast films orient with the side chains preferably normal to the film surface, whereas spin-cast films of nonstereoregular material orient with both the main and the side chains in the film plane. For thick (10-50 µm) solution-cast films, the degree of orientation depends strongly on the solvent used for casting, and on the stereoregularity of the polymer, films of stereoregular materials being more oriented than those of nonregular materials. The most oriented nonregular films are those cast from mixtures of chloroform and tetrahydrofuran. Thin (50-500 nm) solution-cast films are more oriented than the thicker ones, and the effects of different stereoregularity or different casting solvents are small. For spin-cast films, the degree of orientation is independent of substrate and solvent. Spin-cast films of stereoregular material have two different phases: One with the side chains normal to the substrate, and another where they are parallel to the substrate. The diffraction peaks of spin-cast poly(octylthiophene) narrow considerably upon heating.

Structural aspects of electrochemical doping and dedoping of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)2000In: Synthetic metals, ISSN 0379-6779, E-ISSN 1879-3290, Vol. 113, no 1, p. 93-97Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Electrochemical dedoping and redoping of p-toluene sulfonate doped poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) has been studied with in situ grazing incidence diffraction with water used as an electrolyte. The diffraction peak positions and integrated intensities do not change significantly during doping and dedoping, while the peak widths increase upon dedoping and decrease upon doping. This implies that the lattice parameters and the relative positions of the polymer chains and the p-toluene sulfonate ions remain unchanged, the redox processes being carried out by the motion of smaller ions between the polymer and the electrolyte, and that the structural order decreases upon dedoping and increases upon doping in a reversible manner.

    Abstract [en]

Various substituted poly(phenylthiophene)s have been studied by X-ray diffraction. They are semicrystalline, with very different degrees of crystallinity. Those with para-substituted phenyl groups have a low degree of crystallinity, whereas those with ortho-substituted phenyl groups are more crystalline. The most crystalline materials in this study have two equally long substituents on the phenyl ring, one at the ortho position and the other at the ortho or meta position on the opposite side of the phenyl ring. Poly(3-(2,5-dioctylphenyl)thiophene) (PDOPT) was most thoroughly studied, and a structural model is proposed. The structure of PDOPT is quite different from previously studied substituted polythiophenes in that the octyl side chains are directed normal to the thiophene planes. In this way, the conjugated polymer chains are kept separated from each other. Solution-cast and spin-cast PDOPT films are anisotropic, with the octyl side chains oriented normal to the film surface in both cases. This is contrary to the situation for poly(3-alkylthiophene)s, where solution-cast and spin-cast films orient in different ways.

Drift och underhåll för högre effektivitet av järnvägar.2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

representerade inom Blekinge: A – Sydsveriges sedimentära berggrundsområde, B –

Sydsvenska höglandet och C – Väst- och sydostkusten. Efter indelning i grundvattenmiljö

och djup hamnade 20 av lokalerna i

    B3g = ”grunda brunnar (<4 m) i öppna akviferer i

    hydrogeologisk dokumentation i fält.

    Abstract [en]

Studies have shown that the care should be adapted to the individual patient. The postoperative patient has a special need for information. The postoperative needs are ranked different by nurses and patients. Nurses find that competent caregivers, pain relief and the treatment should be a high priority. Patients feel that competent caregivers, communication and a good care are the most important needs that they have in the postoperative setting. The aim of this study is to describe nurses postoperative care of patients who has undergone a general anesthesia and who is treated at surgical ward. The study has a qualitative approach. The data has been collected through semistructural interviews. Six nurses’ have been interviewed. This study shows that information is an important aspect in the patients care. It is important to inform the patient about what is going to happen and what has happened, the patient should also inform the nurse about their condition. There should also be a communication between the different caregivers. Is it also essential that the nurses are attentive to the patient’s pain. Collaboration between caregivers and between the nurse and patient is vital for a good care. The care should be adapted to the individual needs of the patients.

    Abstract [en]

Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy and quartz crystal microbalance, integrated into a one-surface analytical system, and complemented with tapping mode atomic force microscopy, has been used to explore the metal/atmosphere interfacial region under atmospheric pressure conditions. This unique combination of ill situ techniques, all possessing submonolayer sensitivity, has revealed information on the different accelerating roles of ozone (O-3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on the SO2-induced atmospheric corrosion of copper. The formation of reaction products could be followed quantitatively with respect to chemical identity and kinetics. Exposure in SO2-containing humidified air resulted in CuSO3. xH(2)O-like species, formed atop a cuprous oxide, designated Cu2O, all over the copper surface. O-3 introduction resulted in an accelerated mass gain with an increased formation rate of both Cu2O and of CuSO4. xH(2)O all over the surface. NO2 introduction resulted in less mass gain than observed under SO2 and O-3, with no formation of new Cu2O, an initial oxidation of CuSO3. xH(2)O to CuSO4. xH(2)O, and with sulfite oxidation gradually replaced by copper nitrate formation, possibly as CuNO3(OH)(3) The formation rates of the dominating end products, CuSO4. xH(2)O in SO2/O-3 and Cu2NO3(OH)(3) in SO2/NO2 seemed to be limited by the supply of the gaseous constituents.

    Abstract [en]

Three complementary experimental techniques for in situ surface analysis have been combined for the first time in order to explore the chemistry and physics of a copper surface exposed to humidified air. Infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, quartz crystal microbalance and atomic force microscopy provide a congruent picture of the processes occurring at the surface. At a given relative humidity, cuprous oxide forms according to an approximately logarithmic rate law. In addition, an aqueous adlayer of constant mass physisorbs on the surface. Increased relative humidity stimulates the physisorption of water and enhances the nucleation rate of oxide grains, thereby increasing the formation rate of cuprous oxide.

In situ investigations of the metal/atmophere interface1999Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other scientific)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis presents a new experimental setup for surfaceanalysis studies, incorporating chemical information frominfrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) andquantitative information from quartz crystal microbalance(QCM). The integrated IRAS/QCM surface analysis system enablesin situstudies to be conducted of the metal/atmosphereinteraction on a sub-monolayer level. In combination withtopographical information from tapping mode atomic forcemicroscopy (TM-AFM), it was possible to follow the formation ofcorrosion products providing information about chemicalidentity, quantity and lateral distribution. The newlydeveloped system was used to study the influence of relativehumidity (RH) and levels of sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3)and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) down to concentrations of subparts-per-million (ppm), on the initial stages of atmosphericcorrosion of copper.

Exposure to RH led to the formation of small grains ofcuprous oxide (Cu2O), with an average diameter of approximately40 nm. The grain nucleation rate increased with increasing RHdue to the increasing amount of physisorbed water on thesurface.

Exposure to RH and SO2 led to the formation of coppersulfite (CuSO3•xH2O) species as well as reduction in therate of Cu2O formation. The formation of CuSO3•xH2Ooccurred through the dissolution and consecutive precipitationof surface-bound copper sulfite complexes.

The roles of O3 and NO2 in the SO2-induced atmosphericcorrosion of copper was also investigated. O3 was found to havea two-fold effect, resulting in the oxidation of the coppersulfite species to copper sulfate and the enhancement of Cu2Oformation. NO2 promoted the oxidation of copper sulfitespecies, though less efficiently than O3, and reduced Cu2Oformation. In addition, copper nitrate formation wasobserved.

IRAS was also used to investigate the interaction betweenSO2 and surfaces made of platinum and palladium. Sulfuric acidformation was observed on both metals, showing the importanceof the surface on the formation of the metal/atmospherereaction products.

    Abstract [en]

The overall aim was to study transgender persons’ experiences of, and reactions upon, attitudes and social norms in relation to their gender identity. Another question that was relevant to answer was how transgender persons are affected by the hetero norm. The method used to collect data was through questionnaires published on the internet. The only requirement to participate was to be a transgender over 18 years old, and when the survey closed, 35 respondents had answered it. The questionnaire consisted of both quantitative and qualitative questions. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis.

The results indicate that transgender persons living conditions are largely affected by norms, and that they encounter a considerable amount of negative attitudes due to their gender identity. To "pass" as either man or woman turned out to be something that made it easier for transgender people to evade negative attitudes.

One hope is that this study can provide knowledge to different instances in the community to open up to be more open to critical thinking around norms.

The conclusion was that persons with a transgender identity are affected by societal norms and by heteronormativity. It takes a lot of courage to be able to be one self but everything boils down to how strong a person are and the availability of support and role models in the surrounding society.

Stadens mikroklimat: Hur värmeöeffekten och värmeböljor påverkar det urbana livet2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Adaptive Music System for DirectSound2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Magister), 20 points / 30 hpStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With the intention of surveying the field of research in adaptive audio systems for interactive media, a suggested audio system design for adaptive music control is described, and a prototype implementation of key parts of the system is presented and evaluated.

Foregoing midi-triggered sound banks, the proposed design uses layered segmented audio files, defined and controlled by XML-scripts. The results demonstrate an inclination of a flexible system, capable of adequate adaptive behaviour of high quality sound.

The implemented system will serve as an extensive basis for future work contributing to the research of adaptive behaviour to both music and sound effects for interactive media, and also as a preliminary foray into the more experimental field of stand-alone non-linear music playback.

Improved dashboard storage solutions for VCC2008Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This project has been preformed as a master degree thesis in the engineering program Ergonomic Design and Production at Luleå University of Technology (LTU). The project was assigned by Volvo Car Corporation (VCC) in Gothenburg and carried out at Cross Design AB. The purpose of the project was to investigate how storage in the front part of the Volvo models S80, V70, XC70 and XC90 could be improved and optimised. The project should result in one storage solution concept. The procedure of the project was based on a combined methodology of the Sirius Masterplan Design Process and Systematic Problem Solving. To find the existing needs in car storage a survey was performed on a group of 20 car drivers who represented the target group of potential buyers. To make sure to receive extensive information both questionnaires, interviews and observations were carried out. In order to incorporate inspiration and an overview of the range of products on the market the team carried out a benchmarking of most of the leading car makes in Sweden. Related technologies were also studied to find new angles of approach and to increase the number of ideas. An analysis of how the car will be used in the future was performed as well as a general trend analysis of peoples life styles and habits. In the surveys it was found that people are spending more and more time in their cars and that it is becoming important to provide for other needs than the traditional. The studied cars are often used for longer trips at work or on vacation. This creates a need for possibilities for storing office equipment and to have easy access to beverage and food. The idea generation was carried out through the methods of brainstorming, categorising and and adjusted form of the Delphi method and resulted in a wide range of storing solutions. To narrow down the project it was decided to focus only on the glove compartment, the area in the middle of the dashboard, and on the area behind the centre stack. Several concepts were put together for each of these areas on the basis of the previously developed ideas. It was decided to proceed with the development of the glove compartment concepts. These were to be applied on the coming XC90 which has the largest glove compartment volume of VCC’s cars. The glove compartment concepts were compared to previously stated product demands and wishes as well as to each other. The ones with the most innovative ideas and best scores were extracted and supplemented with good ideas from other concepts. The selection specially focused on flexibility, organisation and individualisation possibilities as well as innovation. A combination of concepts ended up with a notch and a case concept, which both could be supplemented with a so called sleigh for easier access. Since both concepts and combinations lived up to the demands the final concept choice was based on calculated scores as well as which was considered to be the most innovative. On these grounds the case concept, called the Glove Compartment Case (GCC), was elected. The GCC consists of two removable cases: one cooling unit and one organised unit. The concept fulfils the wishes of flexibility, organisation and individuality since it allows the user to organise the glove compartment after occasion and stored items.
