Extending a Teachable Agent with a Social Conversation Module – Effects on Student Experiences and Learning2011Inngår i: Artificial Intelligence in Education: 15th International Conference, AIED 2011, Auckland, New Zealand, June 28 – July 2011 / [ed] Gautam Biswas, Susan Bull, Judy Kay, Antonija Mitrovic, Springer, 2011, s. 106-114Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The paper discusses the addition of off-task socially oriented conver-sational abilities to an existing “teachable agent” (TA) in an educational game in mathematics. The purpose of this extension is to affect constructs known to promote learning, such as self-efficacy and engagement as well as enhance students’ experiences of interacting with the game. A comparison of students that played the game with the off-task interaction to those who played without it, shows trends that indicate that students who played the game with off-task interaction had a more positive experience of the game, and that they also learnt more, as reflected in the learning outcomes of their TAs.

Taking advantage of the "Big Mo": Momentum in everyday english and swedish and in physics teaching2015Inngår i: Research in science education, ISSN 0157-244X, E-ISSN 1573-1898, Vol. 45, nr 3, s. 345-365Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Science education research suggests that our everyday intuitions of motion and interaction of physical objects fit well with how physicists use the term “momentum”. Corpus linguistics provides an easily accessible approach to study language in different domains, including everyday language. Analysis of language samples from English text corpora reveals a trend of increasing metaphorical use of “momentum” in non-science domains, and through conceptual metaphor analysis, we show that the use of the word in everyday language, as opposed to for instance “force”, is largely adequate from a physics point of view. In addition, “momentum” has recently been borrowed into Swedish as a metaphor in domains such as sports, politics and finance, with meanings similar to those in physics. As an implication for educational practice, we find support for the suggestion to introduce the term “momentum” to English-speaking pupils at an earlier age than what is typically done in the educational system today, thereby capitalising on their intuitions and experiences of everyday language. For Swedish-speaking pupils, and possibly also relevant to other languages, the parallel between “momentum” and the corresponding physics term in the students’ mother tongue could be made explicit.

Towards a mobile user interface used for monitoring purposes in context of a Geographical Information System2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Mobile Geographical Information Systems are becoming a more and more important tool for presenting geographical data. They are used to support decision making processes, present an overview of distributed information or are in a form of location based services. The problem lies in the fact that mobile devices have limited resources and should still be able to present massive amounts of content. Ideally, the user and the conditions in which the program runs are well defined, but this is usually not the case. This thesis provides a sample prototype implementation of a mobile GIS developed as an alternative to an existing web-based user interface (UI). It focuses on specific conditions present on mobile devices, ways of presenting the data and possibilities of reusing existing elements from the web UI that could be suitable for the mobile environment.

Towards mHealth Systems for Support of Psychotherapeutic Practice: A Qualitative Study of Researcher-Clinician Collaboration in System Design and Evaluation.2016Inngår i: International Journal of Telemedicine and Applications, ISSN 1687-6415, E-ISSN 1687-6423, Vol. 2016, artikkel-id 5151793Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We examined clinicians' and researchers' experiences from participation in collaborative research on the introduction of Internet and mobile information systems (mHealth systems) in psychotherapeutic routines. The study used grounded theory methodology and was set in a collaboration that aimed to develop and evaluate mHealth support of psychotherapy provided to young people. Soundness of the central objects developed in the design phase (the collaboration contract, the trial protocol, and the system technology) was a necessary foundation for successful collaborative mHealth research; neglect of unanticipated organizational influences during the trial phase was a factor in collaboration failure. The experiences gained in this study can be used in settings where collaborative research on mHealth systems in mental health is planned.

Game mechanics’ effects on user retention2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In the era of smartphones and millions of apps just a few taps away, the effort required to retain the users in a particular app is increasing. Gamification is a relatively new tool to increase user engagement and is used in a wide range of apps belonging to categories far away from traditional games. Game mechanics, like achievements and leaderboards, belongs to the fundamentals of gamification. This master thesis examines how some of these game mechanics affect user retention. A custom made app game was implemented as an experiment to measure the effects of different game mechanics during a couple of months. The results indicate that game mechanics does affect some types of user retention but also that it might have no or negative impact of other types. In the end, the purpose of the app might play a central role in the decision making of picking the "right" mechanic. This demonstrates the importance of knowledge about game mechanics and their effects.

Content Ontology Design Patterns: Qualities, Methods, and Tools2017Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Ontologies are formal knowledge models that describe concepts and relationships and enable data integration, information search, and reasoning. Ontology Design Patterns (ODPs) are reusable solutions intended to simplify ontology development and support the use of semantic technologies by ontology engineers. ODPs document and package good modelling practices for reuse, ideally enabling inexperienced ontologists to construct high-quality ontologies. Although ODPs are already used for development, there are still remaining challenges that have not been addressed in the literature. These research gaps include a lack of knowledge about (1) which ODP features are important for ontology engineering, (2) less experienced developers' preferences and barriers for employing ODP tooling, and (3) the suitability of the eXtreme Design (XD) ODP usage methodology in non-academic contexts.

This dissertation aims to close these gaps by combining quantitative and qualitative methods, primarily based on five ontology engineering projects involving inexperienced ontologists. A series of ontology engineering workshops and surveys provided data about developer preferences regarding ODP features, ODP usage methodology, and ODP tooling needs. Other data sources are ontologies and ODPs published on the web, which have been studied in detail. To evaluate tooling improvements, experimental approaches provide data from comparison of new tools and techniques against established alternatives.

The analysis of the gathered data resulted in a set of measurable quality indicators that cover aspects of ODP documentation, formal representation or axiomatisation, and usage by ontologists. These indicators highlight quality trade-offs: for instance, between ODP Learnability and Reusability, or between Functional Suitability and Performance Efficiency. Furthermore, the results demonstrate a need for ODP tools that support three novel property specialisation strategies, and highlight the preference of inexperienced developers for template-based ODP instantiation---neither of which are supported in prior tooling. The studies also resulted in improvements to ODP search engines based on ODP-specific attributes. Finally, the analysis shows that XD should include guidance for the developer roles and responsibilities in ontology engineering projects, suggestions on how to reuse existing ontology resources, and approaches for adapting XD to project-specific contexts.

    Abstract [en]

Ontology Design Patterns (ODPs) show potential in enabling simpler, faster, and more correct Ontology Engineering by laymen and experts. For ODP adoption to take off, improved tool support for ODP use in Ontology Engineering is required. This paper studies and evaluates the effects of strategies for object property specialisation in ODPs, and suggests tool improvements based on those strategies. Results indicate the existence of three previously unstudied strategies for ODP specialisation, the uses of which affect reasoning performance and integration complexity of resulting ontologies.

Effects on performance and usability for cross-platform application development using React Native2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

A big problem with mobile application development is that the mobile market is divided amongst several platforms. Because of this, development time gets longer, more development skills are needed and the application gets harder to maintain. A solution to this is cross-platform development, which allows you to develop an application for several platforms at the same time. Since September 2015 the cross-platform framework React Native, created by Facebook, has been available for public use. This thesis evaluates React Native, for both Android and iOS, in regards to performance, platform code sharing as well as look and feel. An application was developed for both platforms, one version using the native language and one version using React Native. The different versions were compared through automated test scenarios to evaluate performance, manual code review for platform code sharing and with a user study to evaluate the look and feel. The results show promise as the user study shows that the React Native versions of the application have similar user experiences as their native counterparts without significantly affecting performance. The results also show that for the specified application about 75% of the React Native code could be used for both platforms, while it was easy to add platform-specific code.

Improvement of recognition percentage andspeed of ZXing based cellphone EAN-13 reader2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 poäng / 16 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Prevas AB, a consulting company focused on industrial systems and  embedded systems, are looking to expand their mobile phone competency  and started two projects for this purpose. The rst is a diploma work to create a proof-of-concept barcode reader running on Symbian mobile phones, and the second is a student project for the new Innovative Programming bachelors degree to create a functioning price comparison application using IMS1 around the proof-of-concept created earlier.

Both projects achieved their stated goals. However, due to none of the projects focusing on eciency or theoretical correctness the resulting application is dicult to start, runs slowly, leaks memory and is codewise bloated. These defects prevent the application from being realistically deployable, and a third project is started to clean up the application and improve it. This report describes the solutions employed in that third project

The barcode reader in the application was split into two parts: First is the actual application written in C++ responsible for capturing images, sending them to the decoding server and displaying the result to the user. Second is  the decoding server, a separate application written in java that using a TCP-socket waits for images, decodes them, and returns the result.

The primary goal of this project is to not only improve, but actually integrate the decoder into the C++ application, massively improving speed and memory usage. This report was written to highlight the lessons learned during this project, to describe the algorithms and methods used to improve the decoder and to be of use to anyone else writing time-constrained and heavily optimized barcode or pattern recognition code for Symbian devices.

Porting XDtools from NeOn Toolkit to Protégé2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

XDtools is a plugin originally used in the NeOn Toolkit ontology editor. XDtools is used as a tool for the ontology engineer when designing new ontologies or to add new parts to existing ontologies. The XDtools plugin was partially ported to another ontology editor, Protégé. This thesis describes the implementation and design choices made during the work with porting the plugin. A description of the parts that have been ported can be found in the report. It also contains the result of the testing and user study made after the implementation. Conclusions of those results and proposed changes to the plugin are also found in the report.

A multivariate model for classifying texts’ readability2015Inngår i: Proceedings of the 20th Nordic Conference of Computational Linguistics / [ed] Beáta Megyesi, Linköping University Electronic Press, 2015, Vol. 109, s. 257-261, artikkel-id 033Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We report on results from using the multivariate readability model SVIT to classify texts into various levels. We investigate how the language features integrated in the SVIT model can be transformed to values on known criteria like vocabulary, grammatical fluency and propositional knowledge. Such text criteria, sensitive to content, readability and genre in combination with the profile of a student’s reading ability form the base to individually adapted texts. The procedure of levelling texts into different stages of complexity is presented along with results from the first cycle of tests conducted on 8th grade students. The results show that SVIT can be used to classify texts into different complexity levels.

    Abstract [en]

We report results from ongoing research on developing sophisticated measures for assessing a student’s reading ability and a tool for the student and teacher to create a profile of this ability. In the project we will also investigate how these measures can be transformed to values on known criteria like vocabulary, grammatical fluency and so forth, and how these can be used to analyse texts. Such text criteria, sensitive to content, readability and genre in combination with the profile of a student’s reading ability will form the base to individually adapted texts. Techniques and tools will be developed for selecting suitable texts, automatic summarisation of texts and automatic transformation to easy-to-read Swedish.

A scalable back-end system for web games using a RESTful architecture2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The objective of this thesis was to design and implement a scalable and load efficient back-end system for web game services. This is of interest since web applications may overnight gain a significant increase in user base, because of viral sharing. Therefore designing the web application to service an increasing amount of users can make or break the application, in regard to keep the user base. Because of this, testing how well the system performs during heavy load can be used as a foundation when making a decision of when and where to scale up the application. The system was to be generically accessible through an Application Programming Interface (API) by the different game services. This was done using a RESTful architecture where emphasise was put on building the system scalable and load efficient. This thesis focuses on designing and implementing such a system, and how load testing can be used to evaluate this systems performance for an increasing amount of simultaneous clients using the web application. The results from load testing the implemented system was above the expectations, considering the hardware used when running the tests and hosting the system. The conclusion of this thesis is that by following REST when designing a web service, scalability becomes a natural part of how one would design the system.

Reducing workload by navigational support in dynamic situations2012Inngår i: Proceedings of the 9th International ISCRAM Conference / [ed] L. Rothkrantz, J. Ristvej, Z. Franco, 2012, s. 1-9Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

By presenting continuously updated heading and distance information on a small head-mounted display (HMD), as a supplement to a GPS-receiver, we examined if workload could be reduced and performance increased, when navigating in a demanding situation. The purpose was to present limited but sufficient information to facilitate navigation. The technique was tested on ground troops, but could also be used by rescue services and police in situations that require navigation in unknown environments. The main findings were that the workload was reduced in one aspect (during navigation) but increased in another (looking for foot placement). There were no clear differences in performance, except that participants stopped fewer times to look at the GPS-receiver if they had updated heading and distance information. This suggests that a supplement display with minimal information could be useful when navigating with a GPS-receiver in an unknown environment.

Vilken Open Source SIP-server lämpar sig bäst förAndroid?2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 poäng / 16 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Multiple System Combination for PersoArabic-Latin Transliteration2018Inngår i: COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS AND INTELLIGENT TEXT PROCESSING, CICLING 2017, PT II, SPRINGER NATURE SWITZERLAND AG , 2018, Vol. 10762, s. 469-481Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we model a PersoArabic to Latin transliteration system as grapheme-to-phoneme (G2P) and word lattice methods combined with statistical machine translation (SMT). Persian is an Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European family of languages belonging to Arabic script-based languages. Our transliteration model is induced from a parallel corpus containing the PersoArabic script of a Persian book together with its Romanized transcription in Dabire. We manually aligned the sentences of this book in both scripts and used it as a parallel corpus. Our results indicate that the performance of the system is improved by adding grapheme-to-phoneme and word lattice methods for out-of-vocabulary handling task into the monotonic statistical machine transliteration system. In addition, the final performance on the test corpus shows that our system achieves comparable results with other state-of-the-art systems.

Operationalising resilience for disaster medicine practitioners: capability development through training, simulation and reflection2019Inngår i: Cognition, Technology & Work, ISSN 1435-5558, E-ISSN 1435-5566Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Resilience has in recent decades been introduced as a term describing a new perspective within the domains of disaster management and safety management. Several theoretical interpretations and definitions of the essence of resilience have been proposed, but less work has described how to operationalise resilience and implement the concept within organisations. This case study describes the implementation of a set of general resilience management guidelines for critical infrastructure within a Swedish Regional Medical Command and Control Team. The case study demonstrates how domain-independent guidelines can be contextualised and introduced at an operational level, through a comprehensive capability development programme. It also demonstrates how a set of conceptual and reflective tools consisting of educational, training and exercise sessions of increasing complexity and realism can be used to move from high-level guidelines to practice. The experience from the case study demonstrates the value of combining (1) developmental learning of practitioners’ cognitive skills through resilience-oriented reflection and interaction with dynamic complex open-ended problems; (2) contextualisation of generic guidelines as a basis for operational methodological support in the operational environment; and (3) the use of simulation-based training as part of a capability development programme with increasing complexity and realism across mixed educational, training and exercise sessions. As an actual example of a resilience implementation effort in a disaster medicine management organisation, the study contributes to the body of knowledge regarding how to implement the concept of resilience in operational practice.

Comparing a multi-linear (STEP) and systemic (FRAM) method for accident analysis2009Inngår i: Safety, Reliability and Risk Analysis: Theory, Methods and Applications. / [ed] Martorell, S., Guedes Soares, C., & Barnett, J., London, UK: Taylor & Francis Group, 2009, s. 19-26Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Accident models and analysis methods affect what accident investigators look for, which contributing factors are found, and which recommendations are issued. This paper contrasts the Sequentially Timed Events Plotting (STEP) method and the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) for accident analysis and modelling. The main issues addressed in this paper are comparing the established multi-linear method (STEP) with the systemic method (FRAM) and evaluating which new insights the latter systemic method provides for accident analysis in comparison to the former established multi-linear method. Since STEP and FRAM are based on a different understandings of the nature of accidents, the comparison of the methods focuses on what we can learn from both methods, how, when, and why to apply them. The main finding is that STEP helps to illustrate what happened, whereas FRAM illustrates the dynamic interactions within socio-technical systems and lets the analyst understand the how and why by describing non-linear dependencies, performance conditions, variability, and their resonance across functions.

    Abstract [en]

In order to compile a comprehensive representation of the available guidelines regarding interface design for an elderly audience, the available literature was scoured. A prototype interface was then produced based on the guidelines produced from this in combination with previously established needs among elderly that are subject to home care. Six subjects participated in a series of usability test that were implemented to evaluate the design of the prototype, along with complementary interviews that served to investigate the subject’s attitudes towards such a product that the prototype represents in general. The chosen method for these usability tests proved problematic and appropriate measures had to be implemented in order for the tests to produce adequate data. The results of the attuned method showcased an expected animosity towards the type of technology used in the tests while at the same time demonstrating the perceived redundancy in the product due to already established systems in use by the subjects as well as the requirements for such a product to be viable. That is primarily the extended ability to contact and/or communicate with caregivers that such a product offers.

    Abstract [en]

In this small essay I will explore the notion of the design value of business. Interpreted as merely a play with words; such a statement may be regarded as a bearer of little value. But; taken as seriously as the more common question; what the business value of design is; it turns into a critical examination of basic conceptions of what design is for. It also paves the way for the critical claim that design value precedes business value.

Designing for Resourcefulness in Service: Some Assumptions and Consequences2012Inngår i: Service Design with Theory: Discussions on Change, Value and Methods / [ed] Satu Miettinen, Anu Valtonen, Lapland University Press , 2012, s. 151-172Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Research on design for service has mainly concerned itself with understanding the design process. In this research paper focus will be shifted towards service performances, based on a suggested model that can work as an aid to distinguish between different stages in the service development life-cycle and in co-creation of value. In a service performance, participants will enter with resources, competence and attitudes.

What if we view every person in the performance of a service as resourceful? What are the assumptions? How does it fit with figures of thought in service and design research? Which consequences does it bring? The analysis will be based on situated cognition and socio-cultural theories. In contrast to activity theory, theories that highlight emergent activities and participation will be used. It is shown that, design research on service research can find a good foundation in theoretical concepts such as activity theory, zone of proximal development and legitimate peripheral participation, to direct future development of the area.

Implications for strategic arena design: Integrating digital interaction design and service design2009Inngår i: Design Research Journal, ISSN 2000-639X, E-ISSN 2000-3080, Vol. 2, s. 34-39Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [sv]

One approach to understand design's value under a service logic2014Inngår i: Design Management in an Era of Disruption, Boston, MA: Design Management Institute , 2014, s. 2633-2640Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The value of design has been an issue for several decades, where design promotion agencies and national statistics agencies have tried to find ways of measuring and evaluating the contribution of design. Many of these efforts collect their basic model from a traditional view of business value as being created in a value chain. However, when approaching value creation from a service logic perspective, these views are no longer feasible outsets to understand the value of design. In recent developments of business and market logics for service, there is no value before or beyond the value-in-use. In this paper, we develop an understanding of design’s value under a service logic.

The foundation for this understanding is developed through revisiting the productivity paradox, through the three spheres of value creation, through resource integration and through an individual perspective on value.

The conclusion is that design’s value is hinged on its contribution to enhancing intended value creation in the joint sphere, and indirect and inferred value created for continued independent value creation.

    Abstract [en]

Product designers have been the main design competence to be employed in product oriented businesses. When it comes to the design of Product-Service Systems, employing product design competences would be a conservative approach. Design theorist Buchanan identifies design orders spanning from graphic, over product and interaction, to systemic design, explaining important differences in perspctives. Contemporary studies on design disciplines show that differences are significant, and it becomes important to know how to select and direct adequate design work. Methods and tools service designers use are typically serviceblueprints, customer journeys, prototypes etc, all focused on processes and value-in-use, where product desigerns focus on form and function. In this paper we show how service designers relate to industrial design in the context of PSS. We review the profile of service designer and compare design disciplines. We conclude that service designers are well suited to deal with PSS design, with their focus on value in use, together with product designers. We also highlight that busineess need to develop competent judgement and design management to get the appropriate design competence.

    Abstract [en]

In Design for Services, Anna Meroni and Daniela Sangiorgi articulate what Design is doing and can do for services, and how this connects to existing fields of knowledge and practice. Designers previously saw their task as the conceptualisation, development and production of tangible objects. In the twenty-first century, a designer rarely `designs something' but rather `designs for something': in the case of this publication, for change, better experiences and better services.

Mapping What Actors Know When Integrating Resources: Towards a Service Information Canvas2016Inngår i: Service design geographies: Proceedings of the ServDes.2016 Conference / [ed] Nicola Morelli, Amalia de Götzen and Francesco Grani, Linköping: Linköping University Electronic Press, 2016, Vol. 125, s. 544-550Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Even though service is described as actors integrating resources to achieve values, research on perspectives on knowledge that these actors have when integrating resources has not been part of service design research. In this paper we experiment with a technique, based in a service scenario, to map what actors know as a consequence of the events in the service process. We suggest that the technique called Service Information Canvas is valuable in a service design toolbox, and give access to understanding of service processes that is not currently available through other design tools.

In practice based research, especially when working with non-research organisations, sometimes researchers face challenges related to the willingness of participants to openly share experiences outside the realms of the project. As a consequence there are methodological challenges with showing results, and working with knowledge verification. In this paper we suggest that some of these obstacles might be dealt with by using service archetypes.

    Abstract [en]

IBM has taken the lead in recognizing that college graduates need new skills to address business and technical issues in a service business environment. Because services depend critically on people working together and with technology to provide value for others, these new skills include the ability to integrate across traditional disciplinary areas to obtain globally effective solutions. Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME) is one such approach to properly focusing education and research on services, and to preparing tomorrow s graduates to work in an expanding services economy. This contributed volume was developed from the IBM-hosted conference on October 5-7, 2006, designed to discuss the current status and foster the development and advancement of SSME. Contributions explore the ways SSME has been introduced into curricula, services research that is underway or is planned, and recommended actions for academia and governments to establish SSME as its own discipline.

Exploring the concept of feedback with perspectives from psychology and cognitive science2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 12 poäng / 18 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study explores the concept of feedback from various perspectives in psychology and cognitive science. Specifically, the theories of ecological psychology, situated and Distributed Cognition, Cognitive Systems Engineering and Embodied cognition are investigated and compared. Cognitive Systems Engineering provides a model of feedback and related constructs, to understand human behavior in complex working environments. Earlier theories such as ecological psychology, considered feedback as direct perception. Situated cognition clearly inherits ideas from ecological psychology, whereas distributed cognition provides a deeper understanding of feedback through artifact use. Cognitive Systems Engineering provides a systematic view of feedback and control. This framework is a suitable perspective to understanding feedback in human-machine settings.

Självbetjäningsteknologi i butiksmiljö: Hur interaktiva säljdisplayer kan möte konsumenternas behov och mål2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 poäng / 16 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Using Shared Priorities to Measure Shared Situation Awareness2010Inngår i: Proceedings of ISCRAM 2010, 2010, s. 1-5Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Shared situation awareness is hard to measure, especially in operative environments such as crisis management. In this paper the purpose is to develop a novel method to measure to what extent the team has shared situation awareness that can be used in operations. 20 two person teams participated in a study where a dynamic and evolving tactical decision-making task was solved. Shared situation awareness, shared priorities, and team performance were assessed. The results show that the shared priorities measure in this study did not relate to shared situation awareness. Several methodological concerns was identified which could have affected the results. The measure did relate to subjective ratings of cooperation which is very interesting and it is suggested that the measure captured aspects of teamwork. The shared priorities measure was easy to employ, required little preparation, and is a promising addition to team research

    Abstract [sv]

Creating & Enabling the Useful Service Discovery Experience: The Perfect Recommendation Does Not Exist2013Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

We are rapidly entering a world with an immense amount of services and devices available to humans and machines. This is a promising future, however there are at least two major challenges for using these services and devices: (1) they have to be found and (2) after being found, they have to be selected amongst. A significant difficulty lies in not only finding most available services, but presenting the most useful ones. In most cases, there may be too many found services and devices to select from.

Service discovery needs to become more aimed towards humans and less towards machines. The service discovery challenge is especially prevalent in ubiquitous computing. In particular, service and device flux, human overloading, and service relevance are crucial. This thesis addresses the quality of use of services and devices, by introducing a sophisticated discovery model through the use of new layers in service discovery. This model allows use of services and devices when current automated service discovery and selection would be impractical by providing service suggestions based on user activities, domain knowledge, and world knowledge. To explore what happens when such a system is in place, a wizard of oz study was conducted in a command and control setting.

To address service discovery in ubiquitous computing new layers and a test platform were developed together with a method for developing and evaluating service discovery systems. The first layer, which we call the Enhanced Traditional Layer (ETL), was studied by developing the ODEN system and including the ETL within it. ODEN extends the traditional, technical service discovery layer by introducing ontology-based semantics and reasoning engines. The second layer, the Relevant Service Discovery Layer, was explored by incorporating it into the MAGUBI system. MAGUBI addresses the human aspects in the challenge of relevant service discovery by employing common-sense models of user activities, domain knowledge, and world knowledge in combination with rule engines.

The RESPONSORIA system provides a web-based evaluation platform with a desktop look and feel. This system explores service discovery in a service-oriented architecture setting. RESPONSORIA addresses a command and control scenario for rescue services where multiple actors and organizations work together at a municipal level. RESPONSORIA was the basis for the wizard of oz evaluation employing rescue services professionals. The result highlighted the importance of service naming and presentation to the user. Furthermore, there is disagreement among users regarding the optimal service recommendation, but the results indicated that good recommendations are valuable and the system can be seen as a partner.

    Abstract [en]

Currently one of the challenges for the ontology alignment community is the user involvement in the alignment process. At the same time, the focus of the community has shifted towards large-scale matching which introduces an additional dimension to this issue. This paper aims to provide a set of requirements that foster the user involvement for large-scale ontology alignment tasks.Further, we present and discuss the results of a literature study for 7 ontology alignments systems as well as a heuristic evaluation and an observational user study for 3 ontology alignment systems to reveal the coverage of the requirements in the systems and the support for the requirements in the user interfaces.

Enklare sjukvårdsrådgivning med mobil app: designförslag och utvärdering2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 poäng / 16 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

On a Need to Know Basis: A Conceptual and Methodological Framework for Modelling and Analysis of Information Demand in an Enterprise Context2016Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

While the amount of information, readily available to workers in information- and knowledge intensive business- and industrial contexts, only seem to increase with every day, those workers continue to have difficulties in finding and managing relevant and needed information despite the numerous technical, organisational, and practical approaches promising a remedy to the situation. In this dissertation it is claimed that the main reason for the shortcomings of such approaches are a lack of understanding of the underlying information demand people and organisations have in relation to performing work tasks. Furthermore, it is also argued that while this issue, even with a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms, still would remain a complex problem, it would at least be manageable.

To facilitate the development of demand-driven information solutions and organisational change with respect to information demand the dissertation sets out to first provide the empirical and theoretical foundation for a method for modelling and analysing information demand in enterprise contexts and then presents an actual method. As a part of this effort, a conceptual framework for reasoning about information demand is presented together with experiences from a number of empirical cases focusing on both method generation and -validation. A methodological framework is then defined based on principles and ideas grounded in the empirical background and finally a number of method components are introduced in terms of notations, conceptual focus, and procedural approaches for capturing and representation of various aspects of information demand.

The dissertation ends with a discussion concerning the validity of the presented method and results in terms of utility, relevance, and applicability with respect to industrial context and needs, as well as possible and planned future improvements and developments of the method.

Procedural Generation in Gravel2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10,5 poäng / 16 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is concerned with  procedural generation in a genre of games where it is not very common; 2D  physics-based  puzzle  games.  I  will  explore which  different  methods  of  procedural  generation that  will  work  with  this  kind  of  game,  if  any.  If there  is  an  easy  way  to  implement  procedural generation  it  could cut down on the game designers work  load  significantly,  which  would  allow  more content to be produced at a higher pace.

Design and implementation of a timeline for the Web2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Visuzalizing time information using a timeline has been done for over 250 years.

Using a timeline can assist users in making sense of time data which could otherwise be hard to understand.

A timeline has been implemented at Ida Infront, and its purpose is to help managers understand how cases are progressing in a case management system created by Ida Infront. The timeline is designed using usability methods and has been evaluated with regards to its usability and how it interacts.

Results show that there are a number of things that can increase usability and add meaningful interaction, such as using icons to collect similar data into one point and adding filtering capabilities so that users can find interesting data faster.

Putting a spin on SPINN: Representations of syntactic structure in neural network sentence encoders for natural language inference2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis presents and investigates a dependency-based recursive neural network model applied to the task of natural language inference. The dependency-based model is a direct extension of a previous constituency-based model used for natural language inference. The dependency-based model is tested on the Stanford Natural Language Inference corpus and is compared to the previously proposed constituency-based model as well as a recurrent Long-Short Term Memory network. The experiments show that the Long-Short Term Memory outperform both the dependency-based models as well as the constituency-based model. It is also shown that what is to be explicitly represented depends on the model dimensionality that one use. With 50-dimensional models, more explicit representations of the dependency structure provides higher accuracies, and the best dependency-based model performs on par with the LSTM. Higher model dimensionalities seem to favor less explicit representations of the dependency structure. We hypothesize that a smaller dimensionality requires a more explicit representation of the relevant linguistic features of the input, while the explicit representation becomes limiting when a higher model dimensionality is used.

Developing a web application: a usability approach2015Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The objective of this thesis was to develop a user-friendly web application for quality annotation of text translations. Prototypes were designed in an iterative process to allow for continuous feedback from potential users. The iterative method drew attention to the frequently occurring difference between the developer’s and the user’s perception of the design, and was helpful to meet the high usability requirements. This thesis’ work included users throughout the process with user evaluation of each prototype, to ensure the usability of the final product.

IPA in UX Research: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis in a User Experience Design Practice2017Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [sv]

One approach to user experience (UX) is phenomenology, but there are no well-defined methods for how to conduct UX research using phenomenology, especially not in a professional design practice. One well-defined approach developed in psychology is Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), which in this paper is adapted to professional UX research practice. The adaptation is put to test in the case of understanding how newly-arrived immigrants to Sweden experience a start-up service that introduce them to the job market. Contributions and shortcomings of the method in the views of professional UX researchers and designers are documented and discussed. It is concluded that IPA contributes to UX research by investigating both experience and meaning, and by providing holistic insights appropriate for service design and the fuzzy front-end of innovation.

Progressive Web Applications and Code Complexity: An analysis of the added complexity of making a web application progressive2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Web applications have a common code base across multiple platforms, but have previously lacked some core features compared to native applications. However, recent web technology advancements have, in terms of functionality and user experience, reduced the gap between the two development approaches. Applications that leverages these technology advancements are dubbed progressive web applications, or PWA. This thesis explores the concepts of PWA and how it, in terms of code complexity, affects an Angular web application. The results show that implementing considered PWA features does not excessively increase the size of the application and that the overall added complexity is low. The complexity of PWA lies in all the new technology concepts, which are probably unfamiliar to most developers. To reduce this complexity, automated PWA tooling shows great promise, and using Angular PWA tooling when building Angular applications seems to minimize this complexity.

How can Atlassian products be modified to reduce the average time usage for common tasks2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Software tools such as Build systems and project management tools are sometimes notwell designed when it comes to usability. This paper investigates the possibility of creatingcustom solutions for the three Atlassian products Jira, Confluence, and BitBucket, in orderto increase the efficiency when performing common tasks at the Atlassian administration atSaab AB. It was discovered that the main issue was performing reoccurring project-accesspermission audits, which was a very repetitive task with many manual steps involved. The solution to the issue was a Python script that, through the use of the Atlassian RESTAPI, could collect all the necessary information automatically and present it in a readablesummarized view. The amount of manual steps was significantly decreased to just a fewsteps which made a huge difference for the Atlassian administrators at Saab AB.
