Dense-Timed Pushdown Automata2012Inngår i: Proc. 27th ACM/IEEE Symposium on Logic in Computer Science, IEEE Computer Society, 2012, s. 35-44Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We propose a model that captures the behavior of real-time recursive systems. To that end, we introduce dense-timed pushdown automata that extend the classical models of pushdown automata and timed automata, in the sense that the automaton operates on a finite set of real-valued clocks, and each symbol in the stack is equipped with a real-valued clock representing its "age". The model induces a transition system that is infinite in two dimensions, namely it gives rise to a stack with an unbounded number of symbols each of which with a real-valued clock. The main contribution of the paper is an EXPTIME-complete algorithm for solving the reachability problem for dense-timed pushdown automata.

Verification of Cache Coherence Protocols wrt. Trace Filters2015Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We address the problem of parameterized verification of cache coherence protocols for hardware accelerated transactional memories. In this setting, transactional memories leverage on the versioning capabilities of the underlying cache coherence protocol. The length of the transactions, their number, and the number of manipulated variables (i.e., cache lines) are parameters of the verification problem. Caches in such systems are finite-state automata communicating via broadcasts and shared variables. We augment our system with filters that restrict the set of possible executable traces according to existing conflict resolution policies. We show that the verification of coherence for parameterized cache protocols with filters can be reduced to systems with only a finite number of cache lines. For verification, we show how to account for the effect of the adopted filters in a symbolic backward reachability algorithm based on the framework of constrained monotonic abstraction. We have implemented our method and used it to verify transactional memory coherence protocols with respect to different conflict resolution policies.

Stochastic games with lossy channels2008Inngår i: Foundations of Software Science and Computational Structures: Proceedings / [ed] Amadio R, Berlin: Springer-Verlag , 2008, s. 35-49Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We consider turn-based stochastic games on infinite graphs induced by game probabilistic lossy channel systems (GPLCS), the game version of probabilistic lossy channel systems (PLCS). We study games with Buchi (repeated reachability) objectives and almost-sure winning conditions. These games are pure memoryless determined and, under the assumption that the target set is regular, a symbolic representation of the set of winning states for each player can be effectively constructed. Thus, turn-based stochastic games on GPLCS are decidable. This generalizes the decidability result for PLCS-induced Markov decision processes in [10].

    Parameterized tree systems2008Inngår i: Formal Techniques for Networked and Distributed Systems: FORTE 2008 / [ed] Suzuki K, Berlin: Springer-Verlag , 2008, s. 69-83Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Several recent works have considered parameterized verification, i.e. automatic verification of systems consisting of an arbitrary number of finite-state processes organized in a linear array. The aim of this paper is to extend these works by giving a simple and efficient method to prove safety properties for systems with tree-like architectures. A process in the system is a finite-state automaton and a transition is performed jointly by a process and its parent and children processes. The method derives an over-approximation of the induced transition system, which allows the use of finite trees as symbolic representations of infinite sets of configurations. Compared to traditional methods for parameterized verification of systems with tree topologies, our method does not require the manipulation of tree transducers, hence its simplicity and efficiency. We have implemented a prototype which works well on several nontrivial tree-based protocols.

Handling parameterized systems with non-atomic global conditions2008Inngår i: Verification, Model Checking, and Abstract Interpretation / [ed] Logozzo F; Peled DA; Zuck LD, Berlin: Springer-Verlag , 2008, s. 22-36Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We consider verification of safety properties for parameterized systems with linear topologies. A process in the system is an extended automaton, where the transitions are guarded by both local and global conditions. The global conditions are non-atomic, i.e., a process allows arbitrary interleavings with other transitions white checking the states of all (or some) of the other processes. We translate the problem into model checking of infinite transition systems where each configuration is a labeled finite graph. We derive an over-approximation of the induced transition system, which leads to a symbolic scheme for analyzing safety properties. We have implemented a prototype and run it on several nontrivial case studies, namely non-atomic versions of Burn's protocol, Dijkstra's protocol, the Bakery algorithm, Lamport's distributed mutual exclusion protocol, and a two-phase commit protocol used for handling transactions in distributed systems. As far as we know, these protocols have not previously been verified in a fully automated framework.

Monotonic abstraction for programs with dynamic memory heaps2008Inngår i: Computer Aided Verification / [ed] Gupta A, Malik S, Berlin: Springer-Verlag , 2008, s. 341-354Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We propose a new approach for automatic verification of programs with dynamic heap manipulation. The method is based on symbolic (backward) reachability analysis using upward-closed sets of heaps w.r.t. an appropriate preorder on graphs. These sets are represented by a finite set of minimal graph patterns corresponding to a set of bad configurations. We define an abstract semantics for the programs which is monotonic w.r.t. the preorder. Moreover, we prove that our analysis always terminates by showing that the preorder is a well-quasi ordering. Our results are presented for the case of programs with 1-next selector. We provide experimental results showing the effectiveness of our approach.

Monotonic and downward closed games2008Inngår i: Journal of logic and computation (Print), ISSN 0955-792X, E-ISSN 1465-363X, Vol. 18, nr 1, s. 153-169Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In an earlier work [Abdulla et al. (2000, Information and Computation, 160, 109127)] we presented a general framework for verification of infinite-state transition systems, where the transition relation is monotonic with respect to a well quasi-ordering on the set of states. In this article, we investigate extending the framework from the context of transition systems to that of games with infinite state spaces. We show that monotonic games with safety winning conditions are in general undecidable. In particular, we show this negative results for games which are defined over Petri nets. We identify a subclass of monotonic games, called downward closed games. We provide algorithms for analysing downward closed games subject to safety winning conditions. We apply the algorithm to games played on lossy channel systems. Finally, we show that weak parity games are undecidable for the above classes of games.

Monotonic abstraction for programs with multiply-linked structures2013Inngår i: International Journal of Foundations of Computer Science, ISSN 0129-0541, Vol. 24, nr 2, s. 187-210Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We investigate the use of monotonic abstraction and backward reachability analysis as means of performing shape analysis on programs with multiply pointed structures. By encoding the heap as a vertex- and edge-labeled graph, we can model the low level behaviour exhibited by programs written in the C programming language. Using the notion of signatures, which are predicates that define sets of heaps, we can check properties such as absence of null pointer dereference and shape invariants. We report on the results from running a prototype based on the method on several programs such as insertion into and merging of doubly-linked lists.

    Constrained monotonic abstraction: A CEGAR for parameterized verification2010Inngår i: CONCUR 2010 – Concurrency Theory, Berlin: Springer-Verlag , 2010, s. 86-101Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we develop a counterexample-guided abstraction refinement (CEGAR) framework for monotonic abstraction, an approach that is particularly useful in automatic verification of safety properties for parameterized systems The main drawback of verification using monotonic abstraction is that it sometimes generates spurious counterexamples Our CEGAR algorithm automatically extracts from each spurious counterexample a set of configurations called a "Safety Zone" and uses it to refine the abstract transition system of the next iteration We have developed a prototype based on this idea, and our experimentation shows that the approach allows to verify many of the examples that cannot be handled by the original monotonic abstraction approach.

Mediating for reduction (on minimizing alternating Buchi automata)2014Inngår i: Theoretical Computer Science, ISSN 0304-3975, E-ISSN 1879-2294, Vol. 552, s. 26-43Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We propose a new approach for minimizing alternating Buchi automata (ABA). The approach is based on the mediated equivalence on states of an ABA, which is the maximal equivalence contained in the mediated preorder. Two states p and q are related by the mediated preorder if there is a mediator (mediating state) which forward simulates p and backward simulates q. Under further conditions, letting a computation on some word jump from q to p preserves the language as the automaton can anyway already accept the word without jumps by runs through the mediator. We further show how the mediated equivalence can be computed efficiently. Finally, we show that, compared to the standard forward simulation equivalence, the mediated equivalence can yield much larger reductions when applied within the process of complementing Buchi automata where ABA are used as an intermediate model.

    Abstract [en]

We study decidability and undecidability results for parameterized verification of a formal model of timed Ad Hoc network protocols. The communication topology is defined by an undirected graph and the behaviour of each node is defined by a timed automaton communicating with its neighbours via broadcast messages. We consider parameterized verification problems formulated in terms of reachability. In particular we are interested in searching for an initial configuration from which an individual node can reach an error state. We study the problem for dense and discrete time and compare the results with those obtained for (fully connected) networks of timed automata.

    A classification of the expressive power of well-structured transition systems2011Inngår i: Information and Computation, ISSN 0890-5401, E-ISSN 1090-2651, Vol. 209, nr 3, s. 248-279Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We compare the expressive power of a class of well-structured transition systems that includes relational automata (extensions of), Petri nets, lossy channel systems, constrained multiset rewriting systems, and data nets. For each one of these models we study the class of languages generated by labeled transition systems describing their semantics. We consider here two types of accepting conditions: coverability and reachability of a fixed a priori configuration. In both cases we obtain a strict hierarchy in which constrained multiset rewriting systems is the most expressive model.

Using Forward Reachability Analysis for Verification of Timed Petri Nets2007Inngår i: Nordic Journal of Computing, ISSN 1236-6064, Vol. 14, nr 1, s. 1-42Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We consider verification of safety properties for concurrent real-timed systems modelled as timed Petri nets by performing symbolic forward reachability analysis. We introduce a formalism, called region generators, for representing sets of markings of timed Petri nets. Region generators characterize downward closed sets of regions and provide exact abstractions of sets of reachable states with respect to safety properties. We show that the standard operations needed for performing symbolic reachability analysis are computable for region generators. Since forward reachability analysis is necessarily incomplete, we introduce an acceleration technique to make the procedure terminate more often on practical examples. We have implemented a prototype for analyzing timed Petri nets and used it to verify a parameterized version of Fischer's protocol, Lynch and Shavit's mutual exclusion protocol and a producer-consumer protocol. We also used the tool to extract finite-state abstractions of these protocols.

    Abstract [en]

This paper is concerned with the universality problem for timed automata: given a timed automaton A, does A accept all timed words? Alur and Dill have shown that the universality problem is undecidable if A has two clocks, but they left open the status of the problem when A has a single clock. In this paper we close this gap for timed automata over infinite words by showing that the one-clock universality problem is undecidable. For timed automata over finite words we show that the one-clock universality problem is decidable with non-primitive recursive complexity. This reveals a surprising divergence between the theory of timed automata over finite words and over infinite words. We also show that if epsilon-transitions or non-singular postconditions are allowed, then the one-clock universality problem is undecidable over both finite and infinite words. Furthermore, we present a zone-based algorithm for solving the universality problem for single-clock timed automata. We apply the theory of better quasi-orderings, a refinement of the theory of well quasi-orderings, to prove termination of the algorithm. We have implemented a prototype tool based on our method, and checked universality for a number of timed automata. Comparisons with a region-based prototype tool confirm that zones are a more succinct representation, and hence allow a much more efficient implementation of the universality algorithm.

Verifying Safety and Liveness for the FlexTM Hybrid Transactional Memory2013Inngår i: Design, Automation & Test in Europe (DATE 2013), Grenoble, France, March 18-22, 2013., IEEE , 2013, s. 785-790Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We consider the verification of safety (strict se- rializability and abort consistency) and liveness (obstruction and livelock freedom) for the hybrid transactional memory framework FLEXTM. This framework allows for flexible imple- mentations of transactional memories based on an adaptation of the MESI coherence protocol. FLEXTM allows for both eager and lazy conflict resolution strategies. Like in the case of Software Transactional Memories, the verification problem is not trivial as the number of concurrent transactions, their size, and the number of accessed shared variables cannot be a priori bounded. This complexity is exacerbated by aspects that are specific to hardware and hybrid transactional memories. Our work takes into account intricate behaviours such as cache line based conflict detection, false sharing, invisible reads or non-transactional instructions. We carry out the first automatic verification of a hybrid transactional memory and establish, by adopting a small model approach, challenging properties such as strict serializability, abort consistency, and obstruction freedom for both an eager and a lazy conflict resolution strategies. We also detect an example that refutes livelock freedom. To achieve this, our prototype tool makes use the latest antichain based techniques to handle systems with tens of thousands of states.

An Integrated Specification and Verification Technique for Highly Concurrent Data Structures2013Inngår i: Tools and Algorithms for the Construction and Analysis of Systems, 2013Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We present a technique for automatically verifying safety properties of concurrent programs, in particular programs which rely on subtle dependen- cies of local states of different threads, such as lock-free implementations of stacks and queues in an environment without garbage collection. Our technique addresses the joint challenges of infinite-state specifications, an unbounded num- ber of threads, and an unbounded heap managed by explicit memory allocation. Our technique builds on the automata-theoretic approach to model checking, in which a specification is given by an automaton that observes the execution of a program and accepts executions that violate the intended specification. We extend this approach by allowing specifications to be given by a class of infinite-state au- tomata. We show how such automata can be used to specify queues, stacks, and other data structures, by extending a data-independence argument. For verifica- tion, we develop a shape analysis, which tracks correlations between pairs of threads, and a novel abstraction to make the analysis practical. We have imple- mented our method and used it to verify programs, some of which have not been verified by any other automatic method before.

    Abstract [en]

We present a general framework for verifying programs with complex dynamic linked data structures whose correctness depends on ordering relations between stored data values. The underlying formalism of our framework is that of forest automata (FA), which has previously been developed for verification of heap-manipulating programs. We extend FA with constraints between data elements associated with nodes of the heaps represented by FA, and we present extended versions of all operations needed for using the extended FA in a fully-automated verification approach, based on abstract interpretation. We have implemented our approach as an extension of the Forester tool and successfully applied it to a number of programs dealing with data structures such as various forms of singly- and doubly-linked lists, binary search trees, as well as skip lists.

    Abstract [en]

We introduce R-automata - finite state machines which operate on a finite number of unbounded counters. The values of the counters can be incremented, reset to zero, or left unchanged along the transitions. R-automata can be, for example, used to model systems with resources (modeled by the counters) which are consumed in small parts but which can be replenished at once. We define the language accepted by an R-automaton relative to a natural number D as the set of words allowing a run along which no counter value exceeds D. As the main result, we show decidability of the universality problem, i.e., the problem whether there is a number D such that the corresponding language is universal. We present a proof based on finite monoids and the factorization forest theorem. This theorem was applied for distance automata in [12] - a special case of R-automata with one counter which is never reset. As a second technical contribution, we extend the decidability result to R-automata with Buchi acceptance conditions.

    Abstract [en]

Timed automata can be studied in not only a dense-time setting but also a discrete-time setting. The most common example of discrete-time semantics is the so called sampled semantics (i.e., discrete semantics with a fixed time granularity epsilon). In the real-time setting, the universality problem is known to be undecidable for timed automata. In this work, we study the universality question for the languages accepted by timed automata with sampled semantics. On the negative side, we show that deciding whether for all sampling periods epsilon a timed automaton accepts all timed words in epsilon-sampled semantics is as hard as in the real-time case, i.e., undecidable. On the positive side, we show that checking whether there is a sampling period such that a timed automaton accepts all untimed words in epsilon-sampled semantics is decidable. Our proof uses clock difference relations, developed to characterize the reachability relation for timed automata in connection with sampled semantics.

    Abstract [en]

Regular model checking is the name of a family of techniques for analyzing infinite-state systems in which states are represented by words, sets of states by finite automata, and transitions by finite-state transducers. In this framework, the central problem is to compute the transitive closure of a transducer. Such a representation allows to compute the set of reachable states of the system and to detect loops between states. A main obstacle of this approach is that there exists many systems for which the reachable set of states is not regular. Recently, regular model checking has been extended to systems with tree-like architectures. In this paper, we provide a procedure, based on a new implementable acceleration technique, for computing the transitive closure of a tree transducer. The procedure consists of incrementally adding new transitions while merging states, which are related according to a pre-defined equivalence relation. The equivalence is induced by a downward and an upward simulation relation, which can be efficiently computed. Our technique can also be used to compute the set of reachable states without computing the transitive closure. We have implemented and applied our technique to various protocols.

Computing Optimal Coverability Costs in Priced Timed Petri Nets2011Inngår i: LICS'2011, Proceedings of the 26th Annual IEEE Symposium on Logic in Computer Science, 2011, s. 399-408Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We consider timed Petri nets, i.e., unbounded Petri nets where each token carries a real-valued clock. Transition arcs are labeled with time intervals, which specify constraints on the ages of tokens. Our cost model assigns token storage costs per time unit to places, and firing costs to transitions. We study the cost to reach a given control-state. In general, a cost-optimal run may not exist. However, we show that the infimum of the costs is computable.
