    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Letters by Anne Marie Appelgren is based on the author’s own experience. It tells the story of a woman trapped in her past. After her mother dies the protagonist inherits old family letters and soon starts her journey to find out how the family situation got so toxic. She finds out about her mother’s childhood in Germany, at the beginning of World War II, and  how the child was bounced between Germany, Finland and Sweden during the war.

The rift between mother and daughter began when the daughter felt stifled and invisible in her home environment and needed to break free. Her mother would never forgive her for this.

The daughter finds out that she is the last link in a series of only daughters. If there were two daughters only one gave birth. Six generations all have at least three things in common; they followed a man to a different country, they all got divorced, except for one who remained in a loveless marriage, and each had a problematic relationship with their mother.

Den implicite författaren: En diskussion kring begreppet "implicit författare", med en exemplifierande analys av Karl Ove Knausgårds roman Min kamp2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Musik, utbildning och genus: En litteraturstudie2016Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The article investigates Swedish translations of Georges Brassens’ chansons. The aim is to establish what translation methods have been used when the songs were transferred to the target language and covered by Swedish artists. Ten target texts have been analyzed using Johan Franzon’s (2021) system of classification of popular songs in translation. Seven target texts stayed faithful to the source texts and were classified as “Near-enough translations.” The three remaining target texts did not resemble the source texts at all and were classified in the category “All-new target lyrics.” A tendency towards a higher degree of fidelity in the song translations was observed from the 1980s and onwards.

    Abstract [fr]

Migrant Literature Migrating. The Case of Fatou Diome’s Le Ventre de l’Atlantique and Its Swedish Reception2018Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines Fatou Diome’s novel Le Ventre de l’Atlantique [The Belly of the Atlantic] published in 2003, and the reception of its Swedish translation Atlantens mage (2010). The study has an intrinsic (text-centered) perspective, as it examines the representations of migration and of migrants in Diome’s work – but it also has an extrinsic and reader response-oriented perspective, as it focuses on the public discourses emanating from the novel.

Le Ventre de l’Atlantique tells the story of a Senegalese woman who has emigrated to France, and of her younger half-brother who has been left behind. Migration, belonging, exile and xenophobia are important themes in the novel, and it has been cited as an example of francophone migrant literature and of World Literature (Lindberg 2015 and 2016). The female Senegalese narrator claims that many people in Senegal still suffer from what she calls a “colonisation mentale” (Diome 2003:53). Thus, according to the main character, the French cultural and economic hegemony persists even after 40 years of political independence for the nation of Senegal.

The reader-response part of the study deals with the reception of Diome’s novel in Sweden. Reviews published in the Swedish press (here called “established criticism”) have been examined, as well as reviews published in the blogosphere (labelled “alternative criticism”). The material has been collected in the database Mediearkivet (for the press) and by using the search-engine Google for reviews published in the blogosphere, see Aronsson (2016) for a thorough presentation of the method used. The paper seeks to answer the following questions: How is the theme of migration depicted in Diome’s novel, and how does this theme appear in the Swedish literary reception? Is the novel inscribed in a particular literary and/or intellectual tradition? If that is the case, which arguments and references are used by the reviewers?

On connaît la chanson ! La médiation de la chanson française en traduction suédoise2021In: Nordic Journal of Francophone Studies/Revue nordique des études francophones, E-ISSN 2003-0401, Vol. 4, no 1, p. 29-44Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article studies the mediation of French chansons translated into Swedish. The corpus of the study consists of 200 songs in the original French language. These 200 songs have generated 247 Swedish translations and 303 recorded interpretations in the target language. The corpus is dominated by the stars of French chanson from the post-war period: Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens, Barbara, Édith Piaf, and Léo Ferré. The most productive translators are Rikard Wolff, Lars Forssell, Lennart Brummer, Thomas Kinding, and Thorstein Bergman – and the most prolific Swedish performers are Rikard Wolff, Maria Stoltz, Tommy Körberg, Pierre Ström, and Thorstein Bergman. The mediation of French chanson is a male-dominated activity: men account for 56,4 % of the Swedish artists, 66,5 % of the French artists, and 81,4 % of the translators in the corpus. The vast majority of the source texts date from the 1950s and 1960s, and the production of target texts reached its peak some twenty years later. The translation and interpretation of French chansons have become, from the 1970s and onwards, activities imbued with nostalgia. Interest in the mediation of contemporary French music has declined in Sweden; however, the translation of canonized artists from the post-war period has continued.

Making the Muggle: A Study of Processes of Othering in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and how Teachers Can Use the Novels to Work with Issues of Ableism2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The magical fictional setting of the Harry Potter novels is not one separated from our own. It features the same nations and the same history as the real world. Its society is parallel to ours due to similar traditions and hierarchies, such as heteronormativity, ageism, racism, and fascism. Some of these are clearly problematised in the novels, others are not. While issues of racism and blood status are clearly at the forefront of the story of Harry Potter, there are layers to the conflict which reveal that there is more to the discriminatory dilemma than the issue of blood purity. This essay aims to investigate how teachers can use J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series to lead a discussion about othering and discrimination, focusing on the issue of ableism in particular.

The goal when studying processes of othering in Harry Potter is not necessarily for the reader to identify with the protagonists. Instead, textual silences will be interpreted to investigate whether the othering of people like the readers themselves, an othering the reader partakes in when empathising with the protagonists, can be compared to ableism in the real world, and how teachers can use Harry Potter as means to introduce the idea of able-bodiedness as a social construct. By applying crip theory to the text, it can be stated that the division between the protagonist and his non-magical Other is based on ableist ideologies, which result in a positioning of the non-magical as disabled in the magical society. This position is maintained by naturalising the link between impairment and character flaws.

    Abstract [sv]

Narcissism and the American Dream in Arthur Miller´s Death of a Salesman2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay focuses on the theme of the American Dream in relation to narcissism in Miller’s Death of a salesman. The purpose is to demonstrate that a close reading of the main protagonist, Willy Loman, suggests that his notion of success in relation to the American Dream can be regarded as narcissistic.  This essay will examine this by first observing how Willy´s notion of success is represented in the play, then look at how his understanding of it can be viewed from a narcissistic standpoint.  The results I have found in my analysis show that there is a connection between Willy’s understanding of success and his narcissistic behavior. He displays traits such as grandiosity, arrogance, need of specialness and denial of emotions. His relationship with other characters reveals his lack of empathy, manipulation and exploitation of others as well as his need of superiority and fear of inferiority.  The conclusion is that Willy and his notion of success could be considered as narcissistic.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to present the reader an analysis of Harry Potter as high fantasy and how Rowling has expanded on high fantasy norms which can be seen as a contributing factor to why the saga became such a global phenomenon.  This essay will show the ways in which Harry Potter elaborates on the high-fantasy norms by analyzing its narrative elements (setting, narrative structure, characters, and language). The first part will be a brief introduction to high-fantasy and its norms while the second part will be an analysis of the novels in terms of these norms.

En attendant Godot: une étude sur les conditions humaines dans le théâtre de l’absurde2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The authors argue that, using different nar-ration strategies, these comics present intricate interactions between placeand identity which shed new light on the contemporary identity discourse inand vis-a-vis Germany.

    Abstract [en]

Sherlock Holmes has travelled across media borders extensively: from technical to technical medium, from basic to basic medium, and from qualified to qualified medium. Through the decades, Sherlock Holmes appeared in many different forms of storytelling and media constellations, so we can analyse the character in terms of transmediality. This chapter discusses one such example: Penny Dreadful, which originated in 2014 as a television series created by the acclaimed Hollywood screenwriter John Logan. The very same processes of worldmaking that have made Welcome to Night Vale successful have enabled the creation of the transmedial worlds of the Sherlock Holmes universe and the transfiction Penny Dreadful. Following Marie-Laure Ryan’s analysis of transmedia, Jan-Noel Thon also notes that transmedial storyworlds can be varying mixtures of canonical media products and fan-produced material. In terms of media modalities, a contemporary audio drama that mimics a community radio broadcast uses a single sensory modality: all information reaches the listeners through the ear.

    Abstract [en]

Research on multimodal narration in illustrated children´s books and picturebooks have mainly focused on the relations between the text, the illustrations and the book itself as a medium. Relatively few studies discuss the importance of sound in this context. In this article, however, I examine what Irina Rajewsky refers to as a medial configuration presented by an illustrated book for children and an accompanying CD including the narrator’s voice, songs and music. Drawing on the concept of aurality and Lars Elleström’s model for intermedial analysis, I analyze how text, illustration, and sound mediate a detective story for children: Martin Widmark’s and Helena Willis’ Schlagersabotören (2012). The concluding discussion combines perspectives from both genre theory and intermediality studies: In which ways can auditory text and non-verbal sound present the young reader with some of the clues needed in a detective story? Two major functions of sound as a medium can be identified. Firstly, non-verbal sound helps the reader distinguish between the different diegetic levels in the story, thereby focusing the locked room so typical of the detective story. Secondly, auditory text and vocal pitch help the reader perceive some of the anger and frustration among the suspects in that room. Sound, together with text and illustration, presents the reader with a mystery, but also with the cognitive tools to solve it.

”My heart was with Malin”: Mediation and Transformation in Fredrika Bremer’s The Neighbours. This article focuses on a scene in Fredrika Bremer’s 1837 novel, Grannarne (Th e Neighbours), investigating the relationship between reading aloud and empathy established in this work. It discusses the characters’ varied responses to the shared reading experience, utilising reception theory. In a follow-up discussion, I examine the feasibility of using newer theories concerning narrative empathy. Fritz Breithaupt’s theory is of particular interest since he suggests that second-level observation (and thus placing oneself in another person’s perspective) is central to the experience of empathy. Finally, I consider the emotional responses of the characters in relation to melodrama in Bremer’s work.

    Abstract [sv]

Four Men and a Woman – Swedish Interpretations of a Bulgarian Poet This article considers the work of the Bulgarian poet Elisaveta Bagrjana (1893–1991) and her reception in Sweden. Her work provides an example of how poetry can be received and interpreted differently over time within one and the same literary context (in this case Swedish). Bagrjana’s reception in Sweden covers a period of almost 30 years, from 1943, when she was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, to 1970, when a selection of her poetry was translated into Swedish. Different interpretations by four Swedish men, Anton Karlgren, Józef Trypućko, Artur Lundkvist and Nils Åke Nilsson, all of whom were involved in various ways with the Nobel Prize in Literature, place Bagrjana’s poetical world between two opposite poles – ranging from a view of her poetry as limited by her personal life to an emphasis on its universal significance.

    Abstract [en]

Penčo Slavejkov was nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature in 1912. In Bulgaria he is considered the most successful of all Bulgarian writers nominated for the award. On the basis of two translated documents from the Swedish Academy’s Nobel Archive – the nomination letter and the expert’s appraisal, both written by Alfred Jensen – a persistent myth has been created with a recurring theme, namely Slavejkov’s unexpected, early death as the main reason for not being one of the laureates. The reconstruction of the events in 1912, based on all relevant documents in the archive, contradicts the previously accepted position. The article argues that the myth surrounding Slavejkov’s nomination is a result of an incorrect interpretation of the annual procedure for selecting a laureate and the inaccurate translation of the two previously published documents.

Abstract: A Literary Expedition: Swedish Students as Explorers of Bulgarian Literature

Bulgarian literature in the distant European North is unknown for both Swedish readers and literary scholars. The ‘real’ readers of our native literature in Sweden are the students, who participate in the courses in Bulgarian at Uppsala University. By examining exams, papers, abstracts, analyses, and coursework, written between 2014 and 2017, we can understand how and what they discover in the Bulgarian literature. Their literary expedition suggests that the perseption of a literary text is strongly related to the place and time at which it is read. The article argues also that the interpretation of one and the same literary work depends on the readers’ individual situation.

The Meaning of Flight in Steven Spielberg's Films2010In: 11th International Conference 'Da Ulisse a... Il viaggio aereo tra fantasia e realtà' [From Ulysses To... Air Travelling between Fantasy and Reality], University of Genoa, Imperia, Italy, 7-9 October 2010, 2010Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In Steven Spielberg's cinema the theme of flight is central and can be divided into two categories: the real flight and the magical flight. The real flight is influenced by the war stories of Spielberg's father - a radio operator in the US airforce during the Second World War - and can be found in films like 1941 (1979), Empire of the Sun (1987), Always (1989)... The source of inspiration for the magical flight is JM Barrie's famous literary creature: Peter Pan. Films like E.T. The Extraterrestrial (1982) and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) have clear references to Barrie's works, while Hook (1991) even offers a continuation of the Peter Pan story. The theme of the flight in Spielberg's cinema is analyzed as to its autorial motivations and its development, starting from its origins to the present day, paying particular attention to the episode The Mission (1985) that Spielberg directed for the TV series Amazing Stories, which is an exemplary case in which both the categories (real flight and magic flight) overlap.

Läroböcker och etnicitet: En analys av några läroböcker inom språkundervisning2014Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine, from a didactic perspective, messages conveyed about technology (view of technology) in a selection of Swedish children’s books containing elements of technology education, and to explore how these views of technology relate to nature and futures perspectives. The analysis is based on children’s books by six Swedish authors: Selma Lagerlöf, Otto Witt, Elsa Beskow, Karl-Aage Schwartzkopf, Sven Wernström and Sven Nordqvist. These books contain depictions of technology, but also depict issues and problems relevant in the field of technology education. The study has three analytical perspectives: the identification of technologies represented in the books; interpretation of the views of technology transmitted in the stories in relation to nature and futures perspectives; and identification of shared and divergent themes in the stories. The analysis shows that in general, the books present technology in diverse ways. Various facets of technology appear in the material and these are categorized into six themes: technology as metaphor or analogy; as anthropomorphic; as autonomous; technology as a result of a creative driving force; masculine technology; and technology as enduring. There are also different views of technology and its impact on individuals as well as society. The dominant view of nature in the books is weak anthropocentric and a majority of the stories convey the image of an effective future society in which technology solves human problems. A conclusion is that the technology landscapes in children’s fiction could contribute to broadening technology education. The ambivalent messages in these books reveal technology’s multifaceted nature and its complexity. The messages in children’s literature could also make it possible to problematize the nature of technology in ways that  textbooks seldom can. Children’s fiction could thereby be jumping boards for creative discussions about the nature of technology, and technology’s effects on individuals, society and nature in past and present time.

Facts for youngsters: Contextualised technology or fragmented artefacts? A study on portrayals of technology in picture books from a gender perspective2015In: PATT 29 Plurality and Complementarity of Approaches in Design and Technology Education, Marseille, France, April 2015 / [ed] M. Chatoney, Marseille: Presses Universitaires de Provence , 2015, p. 42-48Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Technology is a field with strong connections to the female/male dichotomy and children's gender stereotyping starts as early as the age of two (Berner, 2004; Nisbet, Pendergast & Reynolds, 1998; Turja, Endepohls-Ulpe & Chatoney, 2009). According to the Swedish Curriculum for the Preschool, the preschool should strive to ensure that children ”develop their ability to identify technology in everyday life, and explore how simple technology works” (Lpfö98/2010, p. 10). The preschool also has a goal to actively counteract traditional gender roles and patterns (Lpfö98/2010, p. 4). An important part of children's activities in preschool relates to picture books. A government investigation states that the preschool, through its activities (among them ”reading aloud”) is an arena where societal norms can either be preserved or challenged (SOU 2006:75). Books about cars, airplanes, boats etc. often serve as an introduction to human applications of technology. Based on these, children start to identify and categorize the technologies they encounter in everyday life.

The aim of this study is consequently to investigate the technological content from a gender perspective in a selection of picture books, more specifically; how do the books content preserve or challenge preschool children's view of technology and gender? Preschools use books from libraries in their daily activities, therefore the empirical material in this study is derived from the library section ”facts for youngsters”. A thematic analysis was employed to discover the dominant themes within the books. The result of the study shows that there is a focus on how separate artefacts function but no detailed explanation on how these artefacts are connected or what kind of implications they have in a societal context. There also seems to be an emphasis on traditionally masculine coded technology. This study will serve as a basis for a comparative study between two preschools, one where gender and technology is a prioritised goal and one where it is not.

    Abstract [en]

Lina Axelsson Berg (2017). (Bambi – a comparative analysis of Felix Salten’s book and Walt Disney’s film). Independent project, Swedish, Specialization in Grades 4-6, Advanced Course, 15 credits. School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences.

The aim of this study is to examine the changes that have occurred when Saltens novel Bambi was adapted to Disney’s Bambi. The specific elements that are examined are the scenes, some of the characters and the environment. This has been done through a comparative analysis. The results shows that the changes that has been done when Disney adapted Bambi is fairly small but the (for some) underlying meaning of Saltens Bambi, that it can be read as an allegory, is gone. There has been a change of characters, for Disney has chosen to ignore a couple of the significant characters in Salten and choose to add a couple of new characters which is a reason to why the underlying meaning of the story has changed.

The study also examines if and how the story of Bambi (mostly Saltens) can be used in school subjects, primary when working with human values and how human treat animals. The result shows that the story can be used for that purpose but that the pedagogy who chooses to use is have to see to their own students and how they would react to a story like Saltens.
