    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

UTVECKLING I EN FRAMGÅNGSRIK VERKSAMHET2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Analysis of the Remote Access Market in North America2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

How can a small European technology company make it to the giant North American market? This thesis deals with how a new entrant with disruptive technologies and products in the remote access automation market could enter and develop a business in North America where this market barely exists. To address this problem, we have analyzed if the Porter Five Force framework together with the Blue Ocean concept is a viable approach to evaluate a company’s competitive edge, and what strategy to apply for a company with disruptive products. To this end we make use of a case study of the Belgian high-tech company eWON to do a market analysis, competitor analysis, and analysis of the distribution channels in this market. eWON is already the market leader in Europe and therefore has unique knowledge of this market that could be of advantage in analyzing the US market. We find through interviews and market analysis that the remote access market, which is closely linked to the programmable controller market, is a growing niche market with great potential. There is only one weak direct rival, no solid substitutes, the vast majority of customers are small companies buying small volume and therefore having a limited bargaining power. Furthermore, suppliers could possibly control price due to high demand for components, and due to high capital investments and a need of high quality R&D, entry barriers should be high. With a unique differentiated product, this market has high potentials. Finally, after an analysis of the distribution channels available in the US, we conclude that a high-technology distributor probably is the best option. In this thesis we find a complementarity between the Blue Ocean concept and the Porter framework that is needed for launching innovative products.

FoU vid MAM (3). I närkamp med "tredje uppgiften".2012Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

THE NEED FOR STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT FOR SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED LANGUAGE SCHOOL BUSINESSES IN REPULBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN: A CASE STUDY OF REGENT CALDERDALE LANGUAGE CENTER2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Post independent Kazakhstan has seen the emergence of many companies in the form of small and medium size businesses. Contrary to the practice in the western world of business, where strategy development is a logical and expected practice, post-Soviet-era way of doing business in Kazakhstan is completely different. Companies are started without the initial steps that are usual in the western world of business. Heads of businesses rely mainly on their own intuition and experience in the running of the businesses, without recognizing the need to develop any documents (strategy) that will have the inputs or contributions of the business to serve as a guide for the future of company. This study tries to bring forward the need for the recognition of strategy as a tool in achieving the tops for the businesses in Kazakhstan. After learning different companies’ strategy successes (such as Panasonic and others) we attempted to reveal the main factors which will benefit the strategies of the companies in their long-term success. As an example for the study we observed the works, success activities, and further development of the language school, “Regent Calderdale” (RC) which has a very rich experience in its field, moreover, and a very good reputation in the market. It already has a long list of partners from countries like Canada, the UK, the USA, and Malaysia etc. Company keeps expanding the area of their companions all over the world. Moreover, the company seeks for the new areas it could invest and become even more profitable in the market. We are confident that the present work will develop a new outlook on the business by introducing the novelties the managers of the company could implement in order to make the business blossom.

    Abstract [sv]

Icke-finansiella mått inom dagligvaruhandeln2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Multidimensionell kundlojalitet i tjänsteföretag2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The goal of this qualitative essay is to approach the knowledge of people who commit crimes. From a development psychology point of view, questions relating to childhood ang growth are some of the important subjects we choose to discuss. Our purpose is also to reveal the linkage between criminal behavior and different theories of the above mentioned perspective. To bridge the gap between the general and the individual, our survey was based on profound interviews with four inmates in prison. This offer an opportunity to capture the individual´s inner thoughts, feelings and experience about the criminal action. The result exemplifies episodes through quotations from the inmates´childhood, different experience concerning attachment, training in school, relations, offence, relapse etc. The theme of the inmates narratives support many of the different theories we examined, similar patterns appeared and could be found from there common experince.

Cultural challenges to leaders in an American company in Sweden2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is an explorative research study in which I interviewed 16 leaders at St. Jude Medical (SJM), which is an American company with a satellite site in Stockholm, Sweden with 700 employees. Twelve of these sixteen leaders are Swedish and constitute the main source of information for this thesis. The remaining four leaders were senior managers from the USA, included to contrast the outcome of the Swedish interviews. The interviews were semi-open and on average ~40 minutes long. The purpose of the study was to isolate what challenges the leaders at SJM face and then try to find and identify common patterns in how they attack these problems. I envision this work to be of use to any junior manager who is starting his/her career and especially so if it is at an international company where cultural differences are present. My main conclusions were that leaders at SJM need to - Build and maintain a network –and this is imperative to succeed. - Use the phone frequently and communicate all the time - Create your own vision, as nobody will give it to you - Help your co-workers define the limits of their responsibility and help them prioritize when heavily loaded - Find the appropriate level of work and learn that “good enough is perfect”. - Always strive to meet deadlines, exceed expectations and learn your internal customers’ trigger points. I also conclude that the company, SJM Sweden that is, may need to review their hiring policy and their cultural training. They also need to improve the knowledge management and knowledge transfer between managers and also expand the exchange programs and make it easier to travel for face to face meetings and encourage the same.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Socialization in family firms: A model of managing family firms across generations2006Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research in the area of family business aims to understand three primary issues: (1) how family firms are different from non-family firms, (2) what the competitive advantages for family firms are, and (3) how families can transfer knowledge about their competitive advantage between generations. In this paper we use the concept of family firm capital to differentiate competitive advantages of family and non-family firms, and to clarify what are the different types of knowledge that are important to transfer across generations of families. We also borrow from the socialization literature to provide a framework to explain how knowledge can be transferred across family generations and family employees. We discuss this model and present potential implications for family business research.

VD-byte och effektivitet: i en turbulent och en stabil bransch2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Allt fler företag byter VD allt oftare.

Using Web2.0 Aspect fro Designing a New Business Incubation Model2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis work has examined and analyzed a new operating model in business incubation era, based on utilizing the second generation of web. The main objective of this survey is developing a model of representing many of business incubation services, by enlarging the network relationships between entrepreneurs (including innovative start-up firms), in order to let them share their own experiences, business knowledge, and abilities, in a mass-collaborative networking system. Business incubation is a dynamic process of enterprise development, which accelerates the successful development of start-up and fledging companies by providing entrepreneurs with an array of targeted resources and services. The basic idea of this survey is applying social aspect of web2.0 regarding to develop a new business model, based on the fact that many of business incubating services can be introduced and developed by the dynamic interactive correlation between different types of start-up firms, in which they can share their own experiences, as the extremely valuable practical guidelines for one another, in an open-source collaborative area. I believe that web2.0 aspect, especially social networking system, and Wiki can be utilized as the effective tools for facilitating and improving the entrepreneurs’ communication, where a start-up firm would be helped by other entrepreneurs during its incubating and growth process.

Total Quality Management: Aspects of implementation and human resource2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Problem Discussion Total quality management has become a frequently used term in discussions concerning quality. The international and national competitive environment is in a proces of constant change by the globalisation of markets and increased interdependence of economic agents. This process of change has brought increased demands on the organizations compettiveness and the customers have gained a central role in the organizations focus. Total quality management is considered to be an important management philosophy, which supports the organizations in their efforts to obtain satisfied customers. However traditional work practice and management attitudes does not conform with total quality management, which could cause a resistance towards an implementation of total quality management. Purpose The overall aim of this thesis is to study the role and the aspects of the human resource department tasks in regards to an implementation of total quality management. Conclusion The theoretical analysis reveals the implications there are in building a quality cuture. The analyze implies that builing a quality culture would require a matching human resource strategy, which would involve the human resource management, the organizations way of working as well as the human resource policies and practices. In context to this, was it furthermore argued that the literature of total quality management often have a hidden implicit agenda, which call upon a topdown method for the implementation of total quality management. This could underestimate the difficulties, there are in gaining a commitment to continuous improvements in the current pluralistic industrial relation culture. The empirical analysis in the Grundfos Group reveals the different roles of the human resource management and shows that the implementation of total quality management has posed quite a lot of human resource challenges to human resource employees such as, motivating knowledge workers, obtaining employees satisfaction, overcoming communication barriers, solving problems associated with vastness of the organization.

The effects of price promotions on building a customer base within the Ghanaian mobile Telecommunication industry; the case of Vodafone Ghana2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The recent advances in telecommunication have led to increase in the number of subscriptions to mobile telecommunication networks in Ghana. In today’s competitive telecom market place several marketing communication tools are used by telecom operators in Ghana to retain existing customers and also add on to their customer base. Price related promotion is one such marketing communication tools and the impact of sales promotions in increasing subscriber base forms the basis of this study. We review some sales promotions, its impact on subscription, customer perception about the effects of price promotions in telecommunications, as well as benefits customers realize. The National Communication Authority, the communications regulator, reported 17.437mn mobile subscribers in Ghana at the end of December 2010 which represented overall growth of 15.4% in 2010. This increased growth was as a result of increased subscriber uptake from lower call tariffs introduced by telecom service providers in mid-2010 and promotional offers that were introduced to attract new customers. Promotions thus played a role in this growth rate. Price promotions are used to a large extent to increase sales in today’s competitive markets; there are serious repercussions however, if they are applied wrongly. Hence, this thesis seeks to examine the effects of price promotions on building a customer base within the Ghanaian mobile Telecommunication industry. Questionnaires were administered together with online survey to ascertain what the consuming public feels about sales promotion and how that affects their subscription to a telecom service provider. In all printed survey questionnaires were administered and online survey launched and together there was 84.5% response rate. The results show interesting trends in the market place and consumer perception of the numerous sales promotions given out by the telecom companies. Apart from what this research seeks to contribute theoretically, we see the results as quite relevant to both consumers and service providers. This work gives the mobile telecommunication service providers information on how consumers view their price related sales promotions and thus the need to intensify their consumer education in respect of promotions offered and the benefits of taking advantage thereof and subscribing to a service. For the consumer, accepting that the promotions are meant to give them value for money, retain them and also get new ones on board would increase their adoption rate and also enable them to make an informed decision, among other factors, when considering a mobile telecommunication service provider.

Food retailing during economic downturn. In what way can marketing strategies be adapted to changing consumer’s behavior? Case study of Russian X5 Retail Group and Swedish the ICA Company2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Retailing is the considerable element of today economy. This sector was rapidly developing during past years. It was easy to make consumers spend their money because they wanted to spend money. Today consumers are no longer eager to spend as much as before. Therefore retail companies should find new ways to motivate customers to expend. The aim of this research is to define to which extent retailers suffered from economic downturn and to find out which marketing tools they implemented in order to adapt to new market conditions. In order to investigate the variety of possible scenarios, two countries were taken into consideration. Sweden as one of the most stable economies in the world and Russia as country with promising perspectives but unpredictable and risky environment. The goal of taking two countries for the survey was identifying common and diverse traits of changed retailing conditions and necessary measures to follow it. Qualitative method was chosen for current dissertation embodied by case study analysis of leading retail companies in both countries. Primary data from conducted interviews and secondary data from annual reports and statistical authorities were used for analysis. The findings showed that Russian retail was stricken by economic downturn much more than Swedish. Apart from it, customer’s behavior in Sweden did not change significantly as long as Russian consumers changed their store format preferences in favor of discounters. Despite difference revealed in this issues the common characteristics of successful post-recession marketing strategy were discovered. Low price is now the key element of successful retailer. Other elements of marketing strategies play only supportive role in struggle for consumer’s wallets.

Driving Corporate Growth Through Strategic Entrepreneurial Orientation: A survey of the professional hair cosmetic industry in Russia2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today’s competitive environment as well as after-recession period requires that companies become adept at finding and exploiting opportunities to create value if they are to remain competitive and grow. Consistent with the linear process of entrepreneurship, in this study we conceptualize performance orientation as a variable that is influenced by certain key antecedents. We therefore seek to find out as to how creativity, risk-taking, responsiveness and strategic market orientation influence corporate growth. Key empirical conclusions and validation of our hypotheses are made on the basis of the survey of professional hair cosmetic industry in Russia. The industry represents particular interest as it recovers after 2008-2009 recession and tends to grow, being the flagman of products and services innovation as well as having very competitive environment. Basing on the model of the study with four hypotheses – risk-taking, creativity, responsiveness, and strategic market orientation - we consider them having a positive effect on the performance orientation, though only creativity was confirmed by data analysis. Therefore, we get the empirical evidence of the fact that the companies participating in the survey aspire for performance and creativity plays the important role in their growth.

Growth and subsidizing in a company group2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is about growth, and the factors influencing growth in a positive or in a negative way. Particularly this thesis elaborates on growth of a profitable brand that is part of a group; i.e. growth within an internal capital market. A company being profitable does not equate growth; short-term profit is actually higher if the growth is held limited. This since growth implies a need for more assets, profit is traded for growth. However to keep market share a division needs to identify and pursue projects with positive net present value (NPV), otherwise competitors can find these same market opportunities and take the chance to grow stronger. The data for this thesis has been gathered from annual reports and from interviews with managers having influence of decisions affecting growth and profit. Text books and published research papers have been used for the theory building. The gathered data has been analyzed using the theory and conclusions have been drawn. The DuPont identity, relating the profit margin, asset turnover and leverage to the return on equity is used for analysis. The concept of external finance needed (EFN) has also been elaborated on i.e. that it takes money to make money. Finally Higgins equation for sustainable growth ratio (SGR) based on EFN, describing the relationship between growth and profit is the cornerstone of the theory used. A company operates under several stringent restraints leading to a trade of between growth and profitability. The group studied in this thesis consists of several divisions of which some consist of several brands. While the group as a whole has a relationship between growth and profitability in line with Higgins equation the individual brand in focus has the potential to grow faster. It seems that positive NPV’s need to be left out due to a subsidizing of weaker parts of the group by better performing parts. Capital allocation within a heterogeneous company is complex; a trade off between diversification to attenuate risk and a concentration of resources where profitability is highest is made. The brand in focus of this study has a tradition of preferring high profitability before growth. Trading that high profitability to a higher growth is challenging the mindset both at group, division and brand level. Another reason for turning down positive NPV project may be the payback method being used extensively to make investment decisions, resulting in a project having a long payback period being ruled out despite having a high NPV. A way of increasing revenue growth without affecting profitability can be to providing service in conjunction with the hardware offer. Service offers can be made without heavy investments in production machinery, piggybacking on existing investments. The somewhat opaque structure of the studied group decreases the external market scrutiny and increases the likelihood of the above mentioned capital allocation behavior including subsidizing. Recent changes at group level addresses this, by forming new divisions that are more specialized within each product area.

Capability and core competency identification of a knowledge-based organization2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The concept of core competencies has been discussed for the last 20 years; however concept itself has yet to be standardized. Using the theories concerning core competencies as laid out by Porter, Prahalad, and Hamel, and using a framework created by Clayton M. Christensen that adds support to the identification of core competencies through the examination of capabilities, this paper illustrates a path that supports a method of identifying core competencies through the capabilities of an organization.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Purpose The purpose of this study is to evaluate the transfer pricing system at Blekingesjukhuset in Karlskrona. Method This essay is a case study on the transfer pricing system at Blekingesjukhuset in Karlskrona. To be able to make a rather broad evaluation our empirical material consists of interviews with division managers and controllers as well as the hospitals´ finance manager. In order to simplify the presentation of the results of this study and the investigation, as such, we have created a model for evaluation based on the information gathered in our interviews. Results The results show that the hospitals´ purpose using a transfer pricing system is to create cost-consciousness among its employees and in that way reduce the internal consumption of health care services. Furthermore the results prove several weaknesses in the structure of the transfer pricing system, but also in the manner of which the system has been implemented and how it is supervised. This resulting in difficulties achieving the systems´ intended purpose or goals. Thus, the imprints or the effects using the transfer pricing system have been small.

    Abstract [sv]

Title Loyalty – Is it possible to preserve after an outsourcing Authors Joacim Carlsson och Fredrik Thanche Supervisor Marie Aurell Department School of Management, Blekinge Institute of Technology Course Bachelor’s thesis in Business Administration, 10 credits Purpose Our purpose is to investigate what affects the loyalty in the outsourcing process. We will also look how the outsourcing company can improve the process to keep the former employees loyal after the outsourcing process. Method The investigation is a qualitative study. We have examined two companies that have outsourced any part of the company for two or three years ago. This means that the outsourcing took place between 2001 and 2002. Five persons were interviewed. We will make the conclusions based upon their experience. Results We have in our study reached the following results. To be able to maintain the loyalty after an outsourcing, the outsourcing company is required to communicate well with their employees. It’s also of importance to inform the employees in a satisfying way. If the outsourced personnel understand why they have been outsourced they are more likely to accept it. It’s also important to preserve the commitment between the outsourced personnel and those who weren’t outsourced. This is of great matter when the outsourced personnel still work in the same building as before the outsourcing. The last point we found was that it is important to choose a good outsourcing partner. To find a good, new employer for the former employees has also a great effect on their loyalty.

Med livet som utbildning: Team och enskilda entreprenörers uppfattningar av lärande2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Motiverande beslutsfattande: Relationen mellan chefens beslutsfattande och anställdas arbetsmotivation2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine how key performance indicators are being used as performance management tools within the production industry. Specifically the purpose is to investigate how the KPI:s within the telecommunications industry drives reusability regarding production test systems. This thesis will also highlight today’s cost models and suggest improvements of the KPI and what new ones could be introduced. A case study at Ericsson AB has been performed. The study has an abductive approach because the study is both based on current theories and hypotheses but also from empirical data. Personal interviews were also conducted at HWDSS, Ericsson AB. The conclusion of this case study is that the management control measurements used today, to some extent creates incentives for modular design with high reusability. However, there is room for improvements, both in order to more clearly show the positive effects with high reusability and to more directly control the activity toward this goal. It’s our belief that better monitoring of the proportion of previous modules/components being used in new designs and to have a target value for this part clearly would promote modular design with high reusability. It’s also important to continuously measure the enablers for the goal and not just follow the implementation of identified key activities. KPI, PI and cost models of the business must always be up to date and pointing in the direction of the business laid strategy.

Information Processing and Decision Making in Organizations. The Case of the Department of Fiscal-Administrative Affairs in Ceará (Brazil)2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT This thesis aims to investigate information processing and decision making in organizations. The overall perspective is dedicated to explore initiatives that managers could use in order to improve information processing and decision making in their organizations. I start by a theoretical overview of the literature and research in the field of information processing and decision making. Then, I proceed, thanks to a case study, to an analysis of a tax administration. Theories will inform comparison and help the reflective analysis concerning the work processes. Finally, I will suggest ideas for change and possibilities of adaptation. The literature review, as well as the case study, indicates multiple relevant aspects to the analysis of information processing and decision making. For example: quantitative analytical techniques, cognitive aspects, the conception of knowledge workers, individual and group work, leadership, the impact of technology, organizational model, continuous learning, and others. Organizational model has to taken into account individual careers and technological developments which put central emphasis on information processes and decision making. Information processing and decision making are important part of the normal functioning of bureaucracies, both private and public. Information processing and decision making can not be simply considered as a commodity: they imply to consider the organizational work to be both technical activity as a social one. An appropriate atmosphere is important for every organization – where should dominate trust, open communication, interaction and negotiation. In this respect, managers have to understand their socio-technical role within the organization. Technological resources and quantitative techniques are important to support the development of speedy and ever changing activities. Continuous learning is therefore a necessity and should happen through informal practices at work as well as traditional teaching. The demands of adaptation are so strong that the behavioral perspective needs to be thought within a common organizational demand.

Empowerment – i en organisatorisk förändring2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to identify the level of empowerment developed in an organization exposed to higher standards of efficiency, how it changed the leadership and the situation of employees, as an effort to contribute to the organization theory research. Method: The method chosen was based on the study to investigate the level of empowerment within a company that has undergone a major organizational change. The method used to meet the objective was qualitative. The qualitative study was conducted with a hermeneutic basis, where individuals were asked to describe their experience and the experience of empowerment, to provide answers to how empowerment impacted in an organization that has gone from monopoly to competition. This thesis has a deductive approach, where existing theories dealing empowerment formed the basis for the design of interview substrate, which is then paired with the empirical evidence, based on this, and then the conclusions drawn. Results: The conclusions drawn by the authors of this study, is that empowerment level in an organization that has gone from monopoly to competition increased. Moreover, it seems an organization that has gone from a monopoly to a competitive situation developed like an empowerment culture, to adapt to market requirements. The reason may be that competition demands more customer-oriented and efficient organizations. These, generally leaner organizations asking employees who are flexible, responsible and able to cooperate. The cited research showing that empowerment strategies support these properties. In the study conducted, the survey shows that empowerment partially grown. Employees have been given greater individual and collective responsibility, where core values and central directives provide the framework for their action. Manager's task is to create team spirit and empowerment by encouraging employees to personal responsibility. Both managers and employees of the surveyed pharmacies experiencing greater personal and collective responsibility for the local pharmacy. The perceived control limits the possibility of raising the level of empowerment further, because the control set limits for managers and employees to make independent decisions, based on personal knowledge and experience.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is about the concept of strategic alignment of business intelligence. It is based on a theoretical foundation that is used to define and explain business intelligence, data warehousing and strategic alignment. By combining a number of different methods for strategic alignment a framework for alignment of business intelligence is suggested. This framework addresses all different aspects of business intelligence identified as relevant for strategic alignment of business intelligence: technology, organization, processes, people and strategies. Using the framework to analyze the strategic alignment of business intelligence of an organization will result in the identification of potential alignment gaps. These gaps can be considered as potential areas of improvement. By addressing these areas an organization could improve their alignment and also increase the value of the business intelligence investment

Budgeten som styrverktyg – En studie av Blekingesjukhuset i Karlskrona och S:t Görans sjukhus i Stockholm2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Our purpose is to investigate if and how the purpose is different between a public and a privet heath care organization. We have based our essay and our conclusions on interviews, that we did at Blekingesjukhuset in Karlskrona and S:t Görans hospital in Stockholm. We have done the interviews on four to five different levels in both organizations, to get a depth in our investigation. Our conclusion is that there is big a difference in the budgeting between the public sector and the private sector. The big difference is in the follow up process of the budget, but we could not see that it differed so much in the lower levels of the organizations. It was much more obvious when we came up to the managerial level. Another conclusion we made was that it does not have to be the form of ownership that makes the difference; it can also be the interaction between individuals.

E-handel med Kläder: en marknadsundersökning2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

An Emerging Innovation Agenda: Leveraging Intrapreneur’s Influence on the Dynamic Capabilities of a Company2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this paper was to identify and establish the relationship between intrapreneurs and the Dynamic Capabilities (DC) framework in a company. This relationship aided us in exploring whether intrapreneurs could positively influence the sensing, seizing and transforming of innovations. Findings: This paper explored and identified a possible applicability of intrapreneurial theory and dynamic capabilities in the Innovation Value Chain. Ten intrapreneurial skills that could be carried out by an Innovation Agent (IA) in various parts of the innovation chain were identified. The results showed how these intrapreneurial skills could positively influence the dynamic capabilities and contribute to an improvement in sensing, seizing and transforming of idea in full-scale innovations. Although it was shown that intrapreneurs positively influence the sensing, seizing and transforming as separate elements of the dynamic capabilities framework, it was also discovered that intrapreneurs play a crucial role in managing the ‘dynamic capabilities’ and ‘Innovation Value Chain’ as a whole. They do this by synthesizing and connecting the separate elements. In addition, a roadmap illustrating the focus areas of these intrapreneurial skills within the innovation chain was formulated during the study. Research Implications: The research findings contribute to the understanding the Innovation Value Chain through the lens of the Dynamic Capabilities Framework which consists of sensing, seizing and transforming and how the role of intrapreneurship could positively influence the dynamic capabilities and contribute to a better innovation process. Practical Implications: The practical implications of this study contribute to the innovation management of big high tech global companies. The use of intrapreneurs contributes to addressing the bureaucracy and innovation barriers that big companies usually create as part of their organizational structure and culture. Although it was discovered that all employees and managers should act as intrapreneurs, the research showed that in big global companies there is a need for a separate role of Innovation Agent, who would be responsible for seeing the ‘big picture of the innovation process’, supporting and navigating the employees with innovative ideas through the complexity of innovation process, and playing diverse intrapreneurial roles in order to creatively address the barriers to innovation in the company.

Evolution of Product Management in Web 2.02009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim was to study how product management is practiced in emerging startups in today‟s hi-tech world with emphasis on companies working in Web 2.0. Following key problems were assessed: 1. Often, most companies do not have a defined produc management approach. 2. Product managers use their experience when assigned products rather than a uniform approach throughout the organization suggesting confusions within the teams. 3. Most Tech-startups are too focused on technological advancements that they ignore their intended clients – a reason why products fail.

A Virtual Collaborative Didactic: Experimental Design in a Local Context2004Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Based on a pilot study at a school where pupils work together exploring a virtual world (Fifth Dimension 5D), the objective of this article is to investigate the potential of software, interaction and integration related to instruction. Foci are set on a conceptual development of a virtual collaborative didactic. More concretely, we explore mediated interaction in collaborative weblogs between pupils managing classroom and computer room congenial problems, tasks and assignments. The objectives and foci are set on development of an integrated didactic on English and computer competence. From a starting point where the design of a virtual learning environment is investigated and developed, the idea of weblogs, agency, instruction and integration is portrayed as a situated approach for operating 5D as a game, a mystery and a challenge. The design of the study has motivated the whole class of pupils, as well as inspired and increased narrative text production.

Study on the Relationship between Business Planning and SMEs or Individual Entrepreneurship2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Objective: The objective of this study is to identify the role of business planning in SMEs. Attempts were made to figure out why the business planning is used and in what extent the planning are used by the entrepreneurs. In such case, studies were made to find whether the entrepreneurs use the business plan to achieve higher performance in their business or not. We assumed that a well developed plan leads to convenient access to finance and thereby improving the performance through various measures Methodology: In order to carry on the research, different literature and articles have been read extensively to structure the theoretical framework. To test our objective we have extensively studied literatures, journals and articles along with carrying out a telephone interview on a short number of specific questions. Conclusion: The analysis and conclusion were based on the literatures and the interviews. We relied on a response of 8 SMEs between one to five years old to test our hypothesis. We were able to see the positive relationship between business planning and bank finance. But the data doesn‟t reveal that planning had any significantly direct relation with improving the performance of the business but it does have positive benefits. The findings of this research gives the idea that a business plan is useful in other context besides attracting finance like as a guide, for increasing management efficiency. The respondent also supported those facts but could not provide any significant evidence to their assumptions. Lastly, based on the outcome of the study some recommendations were offered to the prospective entrepreneurs and interest people.
