Kampen om verklighetsbeskrivningen: Hur begreppen renovräkning, bortträngning och hållbarhet cirkulerat som kunskap i renoveringsfrågan2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Bedövade tillstånd: Eter och kloroform inom den medicinska praktiken i Sverige 1847 – 18802019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine perceptions and attitudes regarding death during the Spanish flu epidemic in Jämtland and Östersund (Sweden) 1918. The study asks what attitudes and perceptions were pronounced, how people attempted to make death meaningful, and how this can be understood in a wider historical context of changing attitudes toward death in Sweden and the west at the time. To do this, the study draws primarily upon newspaper articles, obituaries, and diary entries from August–November 1918, and works critically with theoretical and methodological aspects of history of mentalities, backed by cultural history. Historical research regarding death as well as the Spanish flu is extensive, but a more detailed study of the two combined appear so far lacking despite their connection. The study shows how death was made meaningful and understood through a multiplicity of perceptions and attitudes. Previous research has noted how the Spanish flu oftentimes were remembered as personal histories rather than through collective historiography. During the epidemic we see the foundation of this take form. People wish to preserve the memory of their loved ones, and attempt in diverse actions to make their deaths meaningful and understandable. For people in general, both religious and secular ideas toward death become clear. In light of suffering, death appears as an alleviation and a form of stillness, though was neither met with resignation nor apathy. Many instead dedicated themselves to a battle against the disease and its deadly consequences that became part of everyday life. Nurses became heroes going out into battle, and when they succumbed their deaths were described in heroic undertones. Not only do these insights allow us to understand perceptions and attitudes of humans’ historical consciousness, but aids us in our attempt to make death meaningful in times of epidemics and beyond.

Morgonrodnad: Socialismens stil och mytologi 1871-19142016Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

I Morgonrodnad. The Holy and Noble Order of the Knights of Labor.

Röd tro: Socialistisk livsåskådning och religion under 200 år2023Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

I Röd tro.

The Style and mythology of socialism: Socialist idealism, 1871-19142017Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Arguably no modern ideology has diffused as fast as socialism. From the mid-nineteenth century to the last quarter of the twentieth, socialist ideals played a crucial part not only in the political sphere, but also influenced the way people worked and played, thought and felt, designed and decorated, hoped and yearned. By proposing general observations on the relationship between socialism, imagination, myth and utopia, as well as bringing the late nineteenth century socialist culture – a culture imbued with Biblical narratives, Christian symbols, classic mythology, rituals from freemasonry, Viking romanticism, and utopian speculations – together under the novel term ‘socialist idealism’, The Style and Mythology of Socialism: Socialist Idealism, 1871–1914 draws attention to the symbolic, artistic and rhetorical ways that socialism originally set the hearts of people on fire.

Den axiella ålderns innebörd: En studie av Karl Jaspers idé om människans kulturella ursprung och existentiella liv i moderniteten2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines Karl Jaspers' theory of the origin of man in a historical period 2500 years ago.Jaspers believes that it was then that man's current mental and spiritual consciousness was formed and developed. Jaspers was convinced that man should use the abilities of his origin as a counterforce in the struggle in modern reality, a development which in many respects was based on myths, dogmas and irrationality, and which characterized man's living conditions. After suffering the trauma of World War II until 1945, Jaspers decided to identify the good qualities that he believed all people should have in common, thereby creating new existential conditions. Jaspers started from the archaic and classical times in history and then found a period where man had obviously been endowed with specific soul gifts and cognitive qualities. He called the period "the axial age" in the book published in 1949, Vom Ursprung und Ziel der Geschichte, which was then translated into English in 1953 with the title The Origin and Goal of History. The English edition is the primary source in this study. In his book, Jaspers uses a philosophical-historical perspective on the origins and events that he associates with human development during the axial age, in order to draw attention to the normative image we have of our selves and others as human beings in the world. Jaspers pedagogically describes the life man lives in modernity in the same way as when Plato explains the world of ideas. As it is demonstrated in the thesis, Jasper's idea is based on a speculative reflection on the origin and properties of man and regards it as a "tabula rasa" with new existential conditions intended for man in the modern world, facing a charge and a prelude to the future. Furthermore, the thesis explores comments on and critique of this theory expressed by other scholars.

    Abstract [en]

This article outlines a direction for a research endeavour bringing togetherdesign research and design historical research from a perspective of contem-porary design methods. There is a need to probe and question the historiesand geographies of design’s methods, to explore how they could contribute toexpanding conceptual foundations and develop new ways of designing. We are proposing a programmatic framework that brings design methods tothe attention of design history, and to historicity of design in design prac-tices, by sketching a map, a geography in time, to move toward a deeperunderstanding of the evolution of methods linked to the specific cultures andcontexts from which they emerge. It is a starting point for a wider researchproject, an example bringing design historical and design methodologicalresearch agendas closer to each other. Starting from interviews with Italiandesigners we highlight the need for a deeper and continued investigation intodesign histories of design methods.

Political Aesthetics: Addison and Shaftesbury on Taste, Morals and Society2019 (ed. 1)Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Providing a gateway to a new history of modern aesthetics, this book challenges conventional views of how art's significance developed in society. The 18th century is often said to have involved a radical transformation in the concept of art: from the understanding that it has a practical purpose to the modern belief that it is intrinsically valuable. By exploring the ground between these notions of art's function, Karl Axelsson reveals how scholars of culture made taste, morals and a politically stable society integral to their claims about the experience of nature and art. Focusing on writings by two of the most prolific men of letters in the 18th century, Joseph Addison (1672–1719) and the third Earl of Shaftesbury (1671–1713), Axelsson contests the conviction that modern aesthetic autonomy reoriented the criticism and philosophy originally prompted by these two key figures in the history of aesthetics. By re-examining the political relevance of Addison and Shaftesbury's theories of taste, Axelsson shows that first and foremost they sought to fortify a natural link between aesthetic experience and modern political society.

Shaftesbury om poetisk sanning och det naturliga samhället2017In: Lychnos, ISSN 0076-1648, p. 11-26Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

One of the most original voices in British post-revolutionary philosophy belongs to the third Earl of Shaftesbury (1671–1713). Rather than supporting the Hobbesian and Lockean idea of modern political society as an artificially formed creation, Shaftesbury perceives society as a beneficial outcome of nature and natural rationality. Shaftesbury’s understanding of natural society is furthermore entwined with aesthetic matters. The aim of the following article is twofold. First, due to the fact that Shaftesbury’s ideas rarely are analysed in any detail by Swedish scholars, it offers an introduction to Shaftesbury’s take on the complex relation between society and poetry to readers of eighteenth-century intellectual history in general, and readers of the history of literature in particular. Second, given that Shaftesbury is frequently regarded as the first modern advocate of aesthetic autonomy, I wish to problematize such an account by showing how Shaftesbury opposes the idea that poetry holds an instrumental value for society, while he simultaneously maintains the inseparability of poetical truth, artistic whole, and political naturalism. As this article shows, the Promethean myth of creativity is central for Shaftesbury’s understanding of the relation between society and poetry.

    Abstract [en]

This article examines Swedish health research regarding the Indigenous Sami people and the lack of epidemiological data. A historical overview underlines that Swedish research is hampered by Sami people having been the subject of studies by the National Institute of Racial Biology between 1920 and 1950. Public health research has mainly taken place during the last 20 years. There are no current epidemiological studies and this is linked to the fact that Swedish official statistics do not report on ethnic groups in the country. Ethnic statistics is a sensative issue and new ethical principles need to be worked out where the Sami, as constitutionally recognized indigenous people, are allowed to decide whether they want to be part of official statistics, and if so, what statistics would be relevant and how it should be collected.

My purpose is to mirror how the Corona-virus pandemic inflicted a social crisis in Sweden, through the achievement society theory formed in the book The Burnout society by Byung-Chul Han. The methods used are hermeneutics and socio-economic contextualisation. Swedish society did not shut down completely due to the assumption of maintaining ”business as usual”, yet with a controlled rate of infection. Corona generated debates about the future society. The debate is wide but can be narrowed down to two perspectives; those who prefer to stay with the neo-liberal plan and those in favour of forming a more sustainable society. The Corona pandemic has shown us that we live in achievement society, but has also made us question it. The population have also been forced to think in new ways to cope with the crisis and other questions about the human responsibility and mere existence has surfaced.

Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to offer an approach to understanding the development of the idea of federalism during the process of European integration following the Second World War and its impact on the Brexit referendum. Quentin Skinner’s methodology for rhetorical analysis and the study of the meaning of political concepts as determined by their context and use is applied in order to describe the changes in attitude. This can also help explain why there is no consensus on whether the European Union is a federation or not. More specifically, significant persons and documents promoting or rejecting a European federation and depicting the British role in it are analyzed. Despite the importance of economic and immigration issues, the conclusion of this study is that the conflict between the idea of European federalism and British sovereignty was a primary factor determining the outcome of the Brexit referendum and may have far-reaching consequences in the future.

Sergius of Reshaina, Introduction to Aristotle and his Categories, Addressed to Philotheos: Syriac Text, with Introduction, Translation, and Commentary2015Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

There are two related texts extant in Syriac written by the physician and commentator Sergius of Reshaina (d. 536) about the philosophy of Aristotle. This book provides a critical edition and a facing English translation of the shorter of these texts. The edition is based on the single preserved manuscript of the text (Berlin, Petermann I 9). An introduction to Sergius’ life and works, and an analysis of the text in its intellectual context, is also provided. His writing is one of the earliest analyses on Aristotelian philosophy in the Syriac language and presents concepts that were taught at the Neoplatonist school of Ammonius Hermeiou (d. 517-526) in Alexandria.

Sergius received his philosophical and medical education in Alexandria and was active in the city of Reshaina as one of the first translators of profane Greek material into Syriac. He translated chiefly medical works by Galen, especially those that were studied in the Alexandrian school, but also the theological corpus of Pseudo-Dionysius. Sergius composed some original works on Aristotle’s philosophy as well. Through his translation work and literary activity, he paved the way for the later engagement in medicine and Aristotelian philosophy among Syriac writers. His importance and influence is acknowledged by the historical testimonies to him, as well as by the numerous ways in which his works were read and used.

The text of Sergius, edited here, treats themes that are primarily found in Aristotle’s Categories. After a preface, in which the author refutes potential criticism and justifies his writing, he begins his work with a traditional division of the philosophy into theory and practice with their respective subdivisions. He also presents the Platonist notion of universals, before introducing the ten categories of reality into which, according to him, Aristotle had arranged all existing things. However, Sergius discusses the categories of substance, quantity, quality, and relatives more extensively, since these four were considered to be the main categories. Many problems related to these categories are presented together with proposed solutions. Other topics described by Sergius are such as what is a distinctive property, the natural philosophers’ view of the four elements, the modes of opposition and its difference from contrariety, and the five kinds of priority. Moreover, Sergius provides a relatively lengthy discussion of the nature of space and whether it belongs to the category of quantity. This discussion is based on the Alexandrian commentators’ interpretations of Aristotle’s Physics rather than the Categories. In the commentary section of this edition, Sergius’ line of thought is clarified and compared to some Greek commentaries from the same tradition.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is about the origin, planning and establishment of the European Space Research Organisation's (ESRO) sounding rocket base Esrange outside Kiruna in Northern Sweden. Three main questions are examined. First I show there were not just scientific and technical but also political, economical as well as military reasons to build a European rocket base. Second, I scrutinize the reasons to choose Northern Sweden as the location for the rocket base. As it turns out, the main reasons were the favourable location of Northern Sweden within the aurora oval zone, the proximity of the Kiruna Geophysical Observatory, and the possibility to use a large, although not quite uninhabited, area where the launched rockets could crash. Finally, I examine the difficulty of talking about boundaries of various kinds, such as temporal, spatial and functional. The essay also provides a discussion on possible ways to continue research on this topic.

Making Place for Space: a History of 'Space Town' Kiruna 1943-20002015Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Science and technology have a tendency to clump together in places where they spawn other forms of societal activities. Sometimes these places become famous through processes known as place-making, or the social construction of place. Because the scientific and technological activities affect the places, and the places conversely affect the science and technology, it is relevant to study how and why these connections emerge.

This dissertation examines the particular case of the northern Swedish town of Kiruna, which has become known for being a `space town' because of its scientific, technological, and other activities that relate to the near space around the earth. The overall objective is to analyse the processes underlying the making of Kiruna as a space town in the period 1943--2000.

Five parts make up the study. First is an examination of how the development of space physics research in Kiruna led to the setting up of a scientific observatory. The second part studies how the Swedish participation in the European Space Research Organisationmade Kiruna the place for a rocket base. Next follows an analysis of how local business efforts contributed to forming a new satellite technology business and the Space House office building. The fourth part concerns how the visions to establish a space `university' eventually led to the emergence of the Space Campus. Last is an epilogue that briefly analyses the space tourism efforts in Kiruna.

A central finding is that the space town has emerged as the result of entwined processes where, on the one hand, ideas about the near space around the earth have led to new activities and physical structures, and, on the other hand, these new activities and built structures conversely have inspired to new ideas. Of importance is also the geographical place where these developments have occurred. Here, a reoccurring argument to placing the activities and structures in Kiruna was the town's geographically favourable location for specific scientific and technological activities.

Another finding is that the development has gradually led to the emergence of a kind of identity or notion of Kiruna as a particular place for space activities. Although this form of place-making has occurred largely through spontaneous processes, it was also the result of intentional efforts.

Together, these different place-making processes have formed the `space town' of Kiruna.

Is there a Nordic Model for the treatment of introduced tree species?: A comparison of the use, policy, and debate concerning introduced tree species in the Nordic countries2016In: Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research, ISSN 0282-7581, E-ISSN 1651-1891, Vol. 31, no 2, p. 222-232Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article compares the use, policy, and debate concerning introduced tree species in the five Nordic countries (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland). These countries have a long common history and are culturally similar. They are often framed under the benchmark of the Nordic Model or even the Nordic Forestry Model. Therefore, we hypothesize that the Nordic countries' treatment of introduced tree species share common aspects, and that global environmental agreements and international currents in science and policy have reinforced these similarities. The comparison shows that globalization is strong and it seems, at least at a first glimpse, that the Nordic countries follow a kind of Nordic Model in their approach to introduced tree species. However, the history and importance of forestry, ecological conditions, afforestation campaigns, traditions of using introduced trees, understandings, and stakeholder positions have shaped different national and even regional path dependencies and circumstances. This, in turn, has transmuted international policy-making, regulations, and discussions into different specific ways to interpret, control, and implement the use of introduced trees in practice. This article concludes that global environmental agreements and international currents in science and policy adapt to diverse national contexts.

Kolonialismens spöke: En undersökning av svensk kolonialism inom svenska arkiv angående samiskt material2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Colonialism is a word coated with history of trauma, opression and self-governance, something most people only apply to the past. However, most people do not realize that colonialism is still alive within our modern community and all the different levels of it. This essay is a analysis if colonialism exists within the swedish archival world in the context of the indigenous people of Sweden: the Sámi. The essay shall discuss how colonialism has affected Swedish archival ways of working in regard to Sámi issues and documenation, but also how colonialism affects todays archival work and the discussion around who should manage the historical items and documets that have been stolen from the Sámi people by Sweden.

As the Sámi people live in four different countries, it’s needed to point out that this essay will be focusing on the Swedish side of Sápmi, as the situation in Finland, Norway and Russia are entierly different in regard to politics and, archival practices, yet some of the discussion will be around the Norwegian work with Sámi archives and discussing how it might be applicable to Sweden.

As I am part of the Sámi and indingenous community this essay will be using a indingenous perspective of colonalism and the process of decolonisation and the affect it has on our communities, not only does it affect Sweden but globally and why indigenous people are working towards de-colonizing it even if it goes against typical archival practices. As i have the knowledge in both perspectives I will discuss why this is such a complex subject and how the process of de-colonization of swedish archives looks from the Swedish and archival perspective and the Sámi indigenous.

THE ORIGIN AND EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF NORMALISATION IN SWEDEN. Normalisation can be seen as a key concept, both in disability research and in special education. In Sweden so far, the origin of this basic approach is connected to the time period after World War II. The purpose of this paper is to nuance this perspective. The existing Swedish historiography on normalisation, to some extent written by protagonists of the concept, will be discussed. We agree on the full effectiveness of normalisation based on a reform-oriented social policy from the 1960s. However, by means of historical research and based on hermeneutic methods, this study aims to demonstrate the concept’s origin and early development in Sweden already some decades before. For that purpose historical sources from contemporary Swedish litera-ture and reports from school authorities will be analysed. In particular the so called external schools for the feeble-minded had a certain impact on the emergence and spreading of the normalisation approach. As a result of our research, and by linking it to the development of the Swedish welfare state, normalisation can be contextualised historically. This outcome is of high relevance for understanding the history of a path-breaking concept. Finally, and with regard to the future, the question of adaptability and modernity of normalisation arises.

Hegelian Marxism: The Uses of Hegel’s Philosophy in Marxist Theory from Georg Lukács to Slavoj Žižek2018Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since Georg Lukács and Karl Korsch in the 1920s, Hegelian Marxism has played a prominent role as a radical intellectual tradition in modern political theory. This anthology investigates how these Hegelian Marxists, in different historical, political and intellectual contexts during the last century, have employed Hegel’s philosophy with the aim of developing and renewing Marxist theory.

Besides Lukács and Korsch the volume includes articles dealing with the thoughts of Herbert Marcuse, Theodor W. Adorno, Walter Benjamin, Evald Ilyenkov, Lucio Colletti and Slavoj Žižek. The overall purpose is to investigate if, and the degree to which, these thinkers could be interpreted as Hegelian Marxists, and how they use the Hegelian philosophy to better understand their own current society as well as situate themselves in relation to orthodox forms of Marxism. Taken together, the articles can hopefully contribute to an intensification of discussions about the critical and self-criticalphilosophy of Marxism today.

    Abstract [en]

Despite the sympathy for Vladimir Putin’s Russia expressed by much of the European far right (EFR), the question of Europe and Russia has for decades represented a considerable ideological challenge for it. This essay examines the ways in which this challenge is addressed in the work of the French intellectual Guillaume Faye (1949-2019), one of the EFR’s most influential theoreticians. Faye’s writings reveal the full scope of the far right’s ambivalence toward Russia, identifying it alternatively as a mortal enemy of the pan-European project, a potential strategic ally that despite its non-European character was vital for Europe’s purposes of resisting the American behemoth, or finally as a thoroughly European country and an essential part of the European “bio-culture.” In order to support these various positions, Faye deploys alternative ideological narratives, one based on geopolitics and the other on the precepts of ethnopolitics. This particular ideological juxtaposition has a deep history in the thinking of the EFR, and Faye’s polemics reveal how it has become intertwined with the special complexities of the Russia problem.

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the Etnogenez series of science fiction and fantasy novels. Launched in 2009 by the media producer, "political technologist," and Kremlin insider Konstantin Rykov, Etnogenez has enjoyed truly phenomenal success, developing into one of the most ambitious publishing projects of the post-Soviet period. At present it numbers more than fifty works, which circulate in millions of copies and additionally are broadly disseminated on the Internet and as e-books, audiobooks, and podcasts. There are Etnogenez fan clubs, computer games, and dozens of Internet discussion groups. Although the novels in the series differ widely in their plots and subjects, and are written in a variety of different science fiction genres, all of them are loosely inspired by the work of the historian and geographer Lev Nikolaevich Gumilev, in particular his theories of ethnogenesis (from which the project takes its name), passionarnost', and Eurasianism. The essay explores the powerful resonances between the Etnogenez project, the Gumilevian legacy, and the leading political and social narratives of Putin's Russia.

    Abstract [en]

The essays collected in this forum discuss the geopolitical legacy of the Russian Revolution of 1917, one of the most momentous political events of the twentieth century. From a range of different academic disciplines and perspectives, the authors consider how the profound transformations in society and politics were refracted through space and geography, and how enduring these refractions proved to be. The authors focus on three themes that have been dominant in Russian affairs over the past century: 1)the problem of center-periphery relations, 2)the civilizational dynamics of Russia’s self-identification in relation to Europe and to Asia, and 3)the geopolitics of national identity.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the knowledge circulation surrounding the Linnean student Lars Montin’s journey to Northern Sweden in 1749. More specifically, the intention is to examine how agents contributed to the knowledge circulation and to map the movements of the living and dried plants and seeds Montin brought with him to Uppsala. The thesis concludes that local households and agents were vital to Montin’s journey and the gathering of knowledge and specimens. However, some agents created a break in the knowledge circulation, which manifested itself through countersigns like silence, doubt and refusal. When it comes to the specimens of plants Montin collected during his journey, several of them were found in nodes of knowledge after Montin’s return, such as the Botanic Garden in Uppsala and Montin’s herbarium. Their accumulation likely contributed to Montin’s later career as a Natural Historian. All in all, Montin’s journey brought to light how local knowledge and flora can be transformed when introduced into nodes in a scientific, geographical landscape.

    Abstract [en]

Standards of botanical practice in Sweden between 1850 and 1950 were set, not only in schools and universities, but also in naturalist societies and botanical exchange clubs, and were articulated in handbooks and manuals produced for schoolboys. These standards were maintained among volunteer naturalists in the environmental movement in the 1970s, long after the decline and disappearance of collecting from the curriculum. School science provides a link between the laboratory, the classroom, and the norms and practices of everyday life: between the various "insides" and "outsides" of educational and research settings.

    Abstract [en]

The paper examines the prizes and publications of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences as part of a transnational system of scientific communication. Nationally and internationally, prizes and publications served as currency in systems of recognition and benchmarking, and could be converted into international reputations as well as honours and positions in national systems of research, education, and administration. The institutional and linguistic conditions for this exchange changed significantly during the nineteenth century. For Swedish scientists, the symbolic translation of scientific capital depended on the literal translation of texts, from Swedish as well as into Swedish. I focus on two cases that highlight the complex and changing relations between prizes and publications in Swedish science, approaching them from the perspective of language and translation: the judgements delivered by the chemist Berzelius in his journal Annual Survey of Progress in the Sciences (1821–1848), and the Letterstedt Prizes of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (1862–).

The publication strategies of Jons Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848): negotiating national and linguistic boundaries in chemistry2016In: Annals of Science, ISSN 0003-3790, E-ISSN 1464-505X, Vol. 73, no 2, p. 195-207Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article follows the publication strategies of the Swedish chemist Jons Jacob Berzelius (1779-1848). It focuses on the role of language and translation in Berzelius' efforts to strengthen his own reputation, and that of Swedish science. As an author and editor, Berzelius encouraged the translation of his own works into several languages, while endeavouring to preserve the status of Swedish as a language of scientific publication in the face of French, and increasingly German and English, dominance. Reforming the Transactions of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and launching several new scientific periodicals, Berzelius also attempted to influence the publication practices in other countries. Recent scholarship on the history of scientific publication has drawn attention to the practical difficulties of determining and getting hold of the relevant publications in one's field, the 'malleability' of the journal medium, and the common practice of reprinting and summarising papers published elsewhere. Berzelius' publication strategies highlight translation - time-consuming, unreliable and problematic in terms of authorisation and ownership - as one aspect of the wider problem of communicating across national and linguistic boundaries. Berzelius' struggles with the practicalities of communicating across borders in times of war, the choice of language and its consequences, and national standards of publication, demonstrate the importance of a transnational perspective on the history of scientific publication.

Shadows in the Cave: Revisiting Rosengren's Doxology2022Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Caves, images, and symbols are recurring topics in the work of Mats Rosengren, from his reading of Plato in his dissertation Psychagōgia – Konsten att leda själar, to his investigation of the world of paleolithic cave art in Cave Art, Perception and Knowledge. While other philosophers might have descended into the cave with the aim of guiding visitors back up into the blinding light of eternal truths, Rosengren seems to be at home in the underworld. Instead of dismissing the paintings that adorn its walls as merely shadowy copies or distorted images, or claiming that the truth of these pictures is readily available to us, Mats Rosengren invites any traveler joining him to understand them as different forms of sensemaking, forms which at first might appear foreign, but that, upon closer inspection, reveal themselves in all their complexity. In this volume, the contributors take on some of the key themes found in Rosengren’s work, mirroring the stylistic, generic, and topical range that characterizes it. The volume is titled “Shadows in the Cave”, signaling a focus not on eternal truth, but – alluding to Plato – on the shadowplay of our human caves.
