    Abstract [en]

    Background: Home care are a very common form of care and many prefer this form of care in front of hospitalized care. The home care service is therefore in need of a planning system in order to plan its work as efficiently as possible. Many of these implementations fail.

    Purpose: Many implementations in the home care service fail. The purpose of this paper is therefore to investigate what critical success factors project managers should focus on to achieve a successfull implementation.

    Method: This study has been conducted with a qualitative study as research method. A literature study was carried out by finding previous research in the field, which was then used as a theoretical framework. This was then compared with the empirical evidence acquired through semi-structured interviews with people with experience of implementations in the home care industry.

    Result: The result shows that the CSF’s that appeared in the literature study should also be used in practice. In addition, three new factors were identified

    Conclusion: All of the CSF’s presented in the literature study were reinforced by the interviews conducted with the informants in this study. References to how these should be used have also been developed. For example, the focus on the factor resources should primarily be put on the resource time.This study also concludes that depending on the type of organization it is about, such as small private companies, private medium-sized companies or municipal-owned businesses, focus should be on different CSF’s.

    Envisioning a Future Decision Support System for Requirements Engineering: A Holistic and Human-centred Perspective2008Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Complex decision-making is a prominent aspect of requirements engineering (RE) and the need for improved decision support for RE decision-makers has been identified by a number of authors in the research literature. The fundamental viewpoint that permeates this thesis is that RE decision-making can be substantially improved by RE decision support systems (REDSS) based on the actual needs of RE decision-makers as well as the actual generic human decision-making activities that take place in the RE decision processes. Thus, a first step toward better decision support in requirements engineering is to understand complex decision situations of decision-makers. In order to gain a holistic view of the decision situation from a decision-maker’s perspective, a decision situation framework has been created. The framework evolved through an analysis of decision support systems literature and decision-making theories. The decision situation of RE decision-makers has been studied at a systems engineering company and is depicted in this thesis. These situations are described in terms of, for example, RE decision matters, RE decision-making activities, and RE decision processes. Factors that affect RE decision-makers are also identified. Each factor consists of problems and difficulties. Based on the empirical findings, a number of desirable characteristics of a visionary REDSS are suggested. Examples of characteristics are to reduce the cognitive load, to support creativity and idea generation, and to support decision communication. One or more guiding principles are proposed for each characteristic and available techniques are described. The purpose of the principles and techniques is to direct further efforts concerning how to find a solution that can fulfil the characteristic. Our contributions are intended to serve as a road map that can direct the efforts of researchers addressing RE decision-making and RE decision support problems. Our intention is to widen the scope and provide new lines of thought about how decision-making in RE can be supported and improved.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – There is no standardized approach for how to managing Customer Requirements, while there are significant challenges in managing them. Thus, the aim of this study is:

    To define a framework for the managing of Customer Requirements in Graphic Communication.

    In order to find the purpose of the study, a research question was developed and used as basis for the study.

    How can Requirements Engineering, Social Relationships and Communication improve the managing of Customer Requirements in Graphic Communication?

    Method – The study worked is based on one data collection method, semi-structured interviews, in order to answer the research question. The interviews were conducted to obtain the primary data. The method were selected to ensure a qualitative approach in the study. The study has also literature studies conducted as an important element in order to provide a background on existing theories, methods and tools.

    Findings – The study is of an interdisciplinary nature and its results concern areas such as: Requirements Engineering, Graphic Communication, Social Relationships and Communication. These areas have been studied to see how they can interact and ensure a higher and uniformed level of project results, as advertising agencies, consultants in communication and advertising industry delivers. The study resulted in a framework for managing Customer Requirements in Graphic Communications. A framework consisting of two different categories that can affect both practical processes and a social communicative dimension linked to the handling of requirements. The study’s result describes the elements that should be in an iterative design process and how the framework can be used in conjunction with such development.

    Implications – The study is considered to contribute to the research world, since its results have opened up new doors for additional areas for applying the Requirements Engineering. For business and everyday-work in the advertising and communication industry, the result demonstrated that the framework for managing Customer Requirements in Graphic Communications should help to support operations work process, and ensuring a more consistent level of quality. Development processes and its final result would have greater opportunity to be successful, while the use of project resources with high probability could be improved and more efficient through the structure framework brings.

    Sjuksköterskornas omvårdnadsdokumentation skall fungera som stöd, arbetsverktyg och arbetsunderlag i vårdarbetet. Utvecklingen av informationsteknologi (IT) i vården har inneburit en möjliggörande faktor som har medfört nya arbetssätt, organisationsformer och arbetsprocesser. Utvecklingen och användningen av informationssystem (IS) i vården är det mest centrala informations- och kommunikationsverktyget för sjuksköterskorna i den dagliga patientbehandlingen. Det är viktigt att sjuksköterskor skaffar sig en utbildning inom IT, vilket innebär kunskap och skicklighet och stödjer dem i deras praktik, administration och forskning. Betydelsen av att sjuksköterskorna innehar en IT-kompetens i vården idag kan inte nog understrykas. Syftet med undersökningen var att hitta olika tillvägagångssätt som gör att sjuksköterskans IT-kompetens kan höjas. Intervjuer och observationer genomfördes för att undersöka problemområdet. Resultatet visade att det är av stor vikt att organisationerna för de olika verksamheterna inom Hälso- och Sjukvården utvecklar en strategi angående sjuksköterskans IT-kompetens för att precisera vilka IT-kunskaper som krävs för att kunna hantera den stora mängden av informationsflöde i vården

    Abstract [en]

    Today a large number of patient records are produced and these records contain valuable information, often in free text, about the medical treatment of patients. Since these records contain information that can reveal the identity of patients, known as protected health information (PHI), the records cannot easily be made available for the research community. In this research we have used a PHI annotated clinical corpora, written in Swedish, that we have pseudonymised. Pseudonymisation means to replace the sensitive information with fictive information for example real personal names are replaced with fictive personal names based on the gender of the real names and family relations. We have evaluated our results and our five respondents of who three were clinicians found that the clinical text looks real and is readable. We have also added pseudonymisation for telephone numbers, locations, health care units, dates and ages. In this paper we also present the entire de-identification and pseudonymisation process of a sample clinical text.

    Abstract [en]

    A set of standard answers facilitates answering emails at customer care centers. Matching the text of user emails to the standard answers may not be productive because they do not necessarily have the same wording. Therefore we examine archived email-answer pairs and establish query-answer term co-occurrences. When a new user email arrives, we replace query words with most co-occurring answer words and obtain a “shadow answer”, which is a new query to retrieve standard answers. As a measure of term co-occurrence strength we test raw term co-occurrences and Pointwise Mutual Information.

    Abstract [en]

    Approaches to determining the factuality of diagnoses and findings in clinical text tend to rely on dictionaries of marker words for uncertainty and negation. Here, a method for semi-automatically expanding a dictionary of marker words using distributional semantics is presented and evaluated. It is shown that ranking candidates for inclusion according to their proximity to cluster centroids of semantically similar seed words is more successful than ranking them according to proximity to each individual seed word.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to identify information logistical problems and needs in work of change. This within the following work of change areas, strategy, organization and IT. And thereby show what kind of problem and needs information logistics can solve. The reason of choosing these work of change areas is because that information logistics is a multidisciplinary subject. That include informatics, logistics and economy/management.

    The research within information logistics show how IT can be used for a user – demand information supply. In summary the research area expresses how information can be stored in data warehouse and can be processed with business intelligence. The underlying approach of how different IT solutions can give the right information to the right person at the right time is logistics. The research area show different perspectives of information logistic and what the word refer to. The question is of there is any relevance and use for organizations to handle information logistic.

    The method of this study is based on Grounded Theory. Whose purpose is to let the collected empirics navigate the studies theoretical framework of references. Which in the context are most suitable. The approach of this study is hermeneutic with a qualitative method. The empirical groundwork has been collected through telephone interviews with special advisers such as consultants. Within scope of consulting services as strategy, organization and IT.  Through the analysis it has been identified that it within a work of change exist three types of information flows.

    • Structured information flow.
    • Restructured information flow.
    • Unstructured information flow.

    Besides above information flow it has also been identified situations where the information is dynamic respective stable. The analysis has therefore made a difference between the flow of information and the information as such. The following terms will show problems that are regarded as information logistics

    • Develop business plan.
    • The information is seperated from the users demand.
    • Cannot reach out with the information that is on paper.
    • Management wants information in one way and the co-worker on another.
    • Consultants take over information management.
    • Organization of process and people
    • The information is kept separated and affect process execution.

    Icke-kommersiella organisationer har fått en ökad betydelse för samhället vilket har medfört samhällsgranskning och kritik mot dessa organisationer. Utvecklingen kan leda till förändrade attityder för organisationerna med minskad kredibilitet som följd. Detta har en avgörande betydelse för deras utveckling och fortlevnad eftersom de interagerar med och är beroende av samhället. Ett alternativ för att bemöta den bristande kredibiliteten är Internet som via webbplatser tillhandahåller kommunikation med samhället både enkelt och ekonomiskt. Det har dock visat sig att icke-kommersiella organisationer ofta brister i uppdatering av dessa. Det finns således ett behov för dem att finna enkla och lätthanterliga verktyg för att administrera sina webbplatser. Ett möjligt sådant verktyg är det webbaserade redigeringsverktyget phpwiki. Denna studie undersöker hur detta verktyg kan integreras på en icke-kommersiell organisations webbplats för att underlätta administration. Undersökningen genomförs som en aktionsforskningsstudie baserat på ett antal cykler av observation, reflektion och analys dels ur ett praktiskt, dels ur ett teoretiskt perspektiv.

    Det praktiska resultatet från studien är dels en integrerad version av phpwiki på webbplatsen, dels en manual för hur det webbaserade redigeringsverktyget phpwiki kan integreras på en icke-kommersiell organisations webbplats. Studien påvisar att phpwiki är ett alternativ för att bemöta bristande kredibilitet i form av dåligt uppdaterade webbplatser. Den bekräftar även kritik som riktats mot aktionsforskning men påvisar samtidigt att bra modeller, tekniker, ramverk och kunskap kan förebygga detta.

    Abstract [en]

    There are technical trends and operational needs within the aviation domain towards adaptive behavior. This study focus on adaptive interaction criteria for future remotely piloted aircraft. Criteria that could be used to guide and evaluate design as well as to create a model for adaptive interaction used by autonomous functions and decision support. A scenario and guidelines from the literature, used as example criteria, was presented in a questionnaire to participants from academia/researchers, end users, and aircraft development engineers. Several guidelines had a wide acceptance among the participants, but there was also aspects missing for the application of supporting adaptive interaction for remotely piloted aircraft. The various groups of participants contributed by different aspects supports the idea of having various stakeholders contributing with complementary views. Aspects that the participants found missing includes, predictability, aviation domain specifics, risk analysis, complexity and how people perceive autonomy and attribute intentions.

    Abstract [en]

    XML was designed to be a new standard for marking up data on the web. However, as a result of its extensible and flexible properties, XML is now being used more and more for other purposes than was originally intended. Today XML is prompting an approach more focused on data exchange, between different applications inside companies or even between cooperating businesses.

    Businesses are showing interest in using XML as an integral part of their work. Ericsson Microwave Systems (EMW) is a company that sees XML as a conceivable solution to problems in the work with radar communications. An approach towards a solution based on a relational database system has earlier been analysed.

    In this project we present an investigation of the work at EMW, and identification and documentation of the problems in the radar communication work. Also, the requirements and expectations that EMW has on XML are presented. Moreover, an analysis has been made to decide to what extent XML could be used to solve the problems of EMW. The analysis was conducted by elucidating the problems and possibilities of XML compared to the previous approach for solving the problems at EMW, which was based on using a relational database management system.

    The analysis shows that XML has good features for representing hierarchically structured data, as in the EMW case. It is also shown that XML is good for data integration purposes. Furthermore, the analysis shows that XML, due to its self-describing and weak typing nature, is inappropriate to use in the data semantics and integrity problem context of EMW. However, it also shows that the new XML Schema standard could be used as a complement to the core XML standard, to partially solve the semantics problems.

    Abstract [en]

    Information systems (IS) are nowadays extensively used to support all kinds of activities in healthcare organisations. Enterprise modelling can help to make the use of IS in healthcare more effective by providing process and domain models reflecting a particular healthcare unit. This paper proposes a model of the ward round process in a healthcare unit. The proposed model identifies the roles of medical professionals, tasks that can be performed according to the personnel’s competences, and activities that are carried out as part of the tasks to achieve goals of the ward round process. A formal approach has been used to implement the modelling results in the form of an ontology. Such formal ontologies can support improvement and development of IS in healthcare. We learned that modelling workshops are important for development of models that can be formalized in a machine-readable form.

    The main purpose of designing the Stream Control Protocol (SCTP) was tooffer a robust transfer of traffic between the hosts over the networks. For this reasonSCTP multi-homing feature was designed, in which an SCTP sender can access destinationhost with multiple IP addresses in the same session. If the primary path between the sourceand the destination is down, the traffic may still be sent to the destination by utilizingredundant path. And SCTP multi-homing also supports for the concurrent multipathtransfer of traffic. This paper introduces the effect of different network factors likeconcurrent cross traffic, congestion control algorithms and SACK timers on multi -homingfeature of SCTP. Throughput and end-to-end packet delay were used as performancemetrics to introduce the effect of these factors. From the study it was introduced thatconcurrent cross traffic in the network behaves same on multi -homed interfaces and bothinterfaces were affected almost same. It was concluded that congestion control algorithmsalso affects on multi-homing, the RED congestion control algorithm reduced delay andimproved throughput of the SCTP multi-homing. In RFC4960 recommended SACK timeris 200ms, but when 100ms SACK timer was used with concurrent multipath transfer inSCTP (CMT-SCTP) multi-homing, the high throughput and low delay was achieved ascompared with 200ms and 300ms, which indicated that different SACK timers affects onmulti-homing feature of SCTP. All the simulation works have been conducted in NS2network simulator.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis examines the nature and effects of current public information about food production, purchasing and sustainability that is available in Sweden. The thesis follows a two part structure based on the Action Research Cycle; it focuses predominantly on the initial diagnostic stage, using document review, questionnaires and Cultural Probes to examine what information is currently available to Swedish consumers, as well as how they respond to this information. The thesis then moves towards the action planning stage of the Action Research Cycle, using current academic literature in IS with the findings of my diagnostic research to suggest ways in which information-communication technology can be used to improve upon the current situation, and paving the way for future research in the area of public information and food sustainability.

    Bridging the Semantic Gap between Sensor Data and Ontological Knowledge2015Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    The rapid growth of sensor data can potentially enable a better awareness of the environment for humans. In this regard, interpretation of data needs to be human-understandable. For this, data interpretation may include semantic annotations that hold the meaning of numeric data. This thesis is about bridging the gap between quantitative data and qualitative knowledge to enrich the interpretation of data. There are a number of challenges which make the automation of the interpretation process non-trivial. Challenges include the complexity of sensor data, the amount of available structured knowledge and the inherent uncertainty in data. Under the premise that high level knowledge is contained in ontologies, this thesis investigates the use of current techniques in ontological knowledge representation and reasoning to confront these challenges. Our research is divided into three phases, where the focus of the first phase is on the interpretation of data for domains which are semantically poor in terms of available structured knowledge. During the second phase, we studied publicly available ontological knowledge for the task of annotating multivariate data. Our contribution in this phase is about applying a diagnostic reasoning algorithm to available ontologies. Our studies during the last phase have been focused on the design and development of a domain-independent ontological representation model equipped with a non-monotonic reasoning approach with the purpose of annotating time-series data. Our last contribution is related to coupling the OWL-DL ontology with a non-monotonic reasoner. The experimental platforms used for validation consist of a network of sensors which include gas sensors whose generated data is complex. A secondary data set includes time series medical signals representing physiological data, as well as a number of publicly available ontologies such as NCBO Bioportal repository.

    PREDICTION OF PROTEIN SECONDARY STRUCTURE by Incorporating Biophysical Information into Artificial Neural Networks1998Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    This project applied artificial neural networks to the field of secondary structure prediction of proteins. A NETtalk architecture with a window size 13 was used. Over-fitting was avoided by the use of 3 real numbers to represent amino acids, reducing the number of adjustable weights to 840. Two alternative representations of amino acids that incorporated biophysical data were created and tested. They were tested both separately and in combination on a standard 7-fold cross-validation set of 126 proteins. The best performance was achieved using an average result from two predictions. This was then filtered and gave the following results. Accuracy levels for core structures were: Q3total accuracy of 61.3% consisting of Q3 accuracy’s of 54.0%, 38.1% & 77.0% for Helix, Strand and Coil respectively with Matthew’s correlation’s Ca = 0.34, Cb = 0.26 , Cc = 0.31. The average lengths of structures predicted were 9.8, 4.9 and 11.0, for helix, sheet and coil respectively. These results are lower than those of other methods using single sequences and localist representations. The most likely reason for this is over generalisation caused by using a small number of units.

    Abstract [en]

    Information security is one of the most essential concerns in today’s organizations. IT departments in larger organizations are tasked to implement security, by both ensuring to have pertinent hardware and software, and likewise enlighten, teach and educate organization’s employees about security issues. The aim of this research is to focus on the human factor of the organization, which impacts the security of the information, since technological solutions of technical problems become incomprehensible without human recognition about security. If the security is not addressed in firms, this might lead to essential data of the organization to be compromised. This study explores ways to enhance information security and improve the human factor by integrating the crucial information security elements in organizations. Social constructivist worldview is adopted throughout the study, and an inductive based - qualitative approach, a single case study design and hermeneutical analysis for analyzing the observations and interviews are utilized. The research setting for this study is Växjö Municipality in Sweden. The empirical investigation suggests that human factor plays an essential role in maintaining information security, and organizations can improve employees’ role by keeping their security policies up to date and find the best ways to disseminate that information. As a result, this research comes up with “information security human management model” for organizations.

    Sociala medier ger oss en möjlighet att kommunicera med varandra och sprida information till tusentals människor samtidigt. Idag använder båda privatpersoner och organisationer sig av sociala medier, även kommuner finns idag på sociala medier för bland annat sprida information och kommunicera med medborgarna. Syftet med denna uppsats är att ta reda på medborgarnas önskemål om vad kommunen bör använda Facebook till/hur. Men även ta reda om det stämmer överrens med vad kommunen publicerar idag eller inte. Detta ger kommunen en bild av vad medborgaren är intresserade av att se på deras Facebooksida.Studien baseras på två metoder, den ena metoden är en webbaserad enkätundersökning där 32 deltagare från Karlstads universitet besvarar frågorna med egna ord. Frågorna i enkäten är fördefinerade och hjälper med att besvara uppsatsens syfte. Den andra metoden är en liten dataanalys av Karlstads och Grums kommuns Facebook sida för att kartlägga vad kommunerna publicerar idag. Undersökningen visar att medborgaren är intresserade av att se mer information om vad som händer i kommunen, om olika event och hur kommunen jobbar. Medborgaren vill också ta del av de olika besluten som tas i kommunen. Kommunen publicerar idag till vis del det medborgaren är intresserad av men medborgaren vill att kommunen visar mer delaktighet, att svara och delta aktivt i kommentarerna som medborgaren ger på kommunens inlägg.

    Enligt vissa kontroversiella forskare, som kallar sig kognitiva etologer, så kan antropomorfism användas i forskningssyfte inom djurkognition. Syftet med den här rapporten är att analysera antropomorfism och dess grundläggande beståndsdelar, samt utföra en undersökning för att ta reda på vilka faktorer som påverkar människors tolkningar av djurs beteende. Tre personer fick kommentera några videosekvenser, innehållande djur. De skulle låtas att de var ett av djuren och efter varje videosekvens blev de utfrågade om hur de hade resonerat under "agerandet". Den kvalitativa analysen av materialet visade att flera faktorer tillsammans inverkade på deltagarnas tolkningar och att överdriven antropomorfism kan undvikas till viss del, beroende på individuella faktorer.

    Facilitation matters: A framework for instructor-led serious gaming2014Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This thesis explores the use of serious games from an instructor perspective. More specifically, it aims to study the roles of instructors and how they can be facilitated within an instructor-led game-based training environment. Research within the field of serious games has mostly focused on the learners' perspective, but little attention has been paid to what the instructors do and what challenges that entails. In this thesis, I argue that serious games, as artefacts used for learning and training, cannot fully replace the instructors' tasks, but must rather be designed to facilitate the various activities of the instructors. Thus, instructors form an important target audience in serious game development – not just as subject matter experts, but also as users and players of the game – with a different set of needs than the learners. Moreover, serious gaming (the actualisation of a serious game) involves more than in-game activities, it also involves actions and events that occur off-game. These activities must also be considered when designing and utilising games for learning and training.

    Using a qualitative approach, instructor-led serious gaming has been explored from a range of contexts, from rehabilitation to incident commander training and military training. Several different instructor roles have been identified and characterised, including in-game facilitator, puckster, debriefer, technical support and subject matter expert. Based on empirical and theoretical material, a framework for instructor-led serious gaming has been developed. It involves best practices in different phases of game-based training, such as scenario authoring, coaching-by-gaming, assessing in-game and off-game performance, giving feedback, and conducting a debriefing or after-action review. Furthermore, specific needs and challenges for instructors have been identified and reformulated into guidelines for instructor-led serious gaming. The guidelines highlight the importance of usability and visualisation, as well as the need for carefully designed support tools for instructors' situation awareness, assessment and debriefing. Lastly, a number of success factors pertaining to both the development and actualisation of serious games are presented. Since serious games aim to be both productive and engaging, it is advantageous to work with interdisciplinary teams when developing serious games. This includes subject matter experts well versed in serious gaming practices. Furthermore, a successful serious game should adhere to sound pedagogical theories, be easy to use and maintain, and include system support for instructors' tasks. Successful serious gaming practices also involve having an organisational culture that fosters knowledge sharing among practitioners.

    Background: Free text is helpful for entering information into electronic health records, but reusing it is a challenge. The need for language technology for processing Finnish and Swedish healthcare text is therefore evident; however, Finnish and Swedish are linguistically very dissimilar. In this paper we present a comparison of characteristics in Finnish and Swedish free-text nursing narratives from intensive care. This creates a framework for characterising and comparing clinical text and lays the groundwork for developing clinical language technologies. Methods: Our material included daily nursing narratives from one intensive care unit in Finland and one in Sweden. Inclusion criteria for patients were an inpatient period of least five days and an age of at least 16 years. We performed a comparative analysis as part of a collaborative effort between Finnish- and Swedish-speaking healthcare and language technology professionals that included both qualitative and quantitative aspects. The qualitative analysis addressed the content and structure of three average- sized health records from each country. In the quantitative analysis 514 Finnish and 379 Swedish health records were studied using various language technology tools. Results: Although the two languages are not closely related, nursing narratives in Finland and Sweden had many properties in common. Both made use of specialised jargon and their content was very similar. However, many of these characteristics were challenging regarding development of language technology to support producing and using clinical documentation. Conclusions: The way Finnish and Swedish intensive care nursing was documented, was not country or language dependent, but shared a common context, principles and structural features and even similar vocabulary elements. Technology solutions are therefore likely to be applicable to a wider range of natural languages, but they need linguistic tailoring.     Abstract [en]

    This paper describes past, ongoing and planned work on the collection and transcription of spoken language samples for all the South African official languages and as part of this the training of researchers in corpus linguistic research skills. More specifically the work has involved (and still involves) establishing an international corpus linguistic network linked to a network hub at a UNISA website and the development of research tools, a corpus research guide and workbook for multimodal communication and spoken language corpus research. As an example of the work we are doing and hope to do more of in the future, we present a small pilot study of the influence of English and Afrikaans on the 100 most frequent words in spoken Xhosa as this is evidenced in the corpus of spoken interaction we have gathered so far. Other planned work, besides work on spoken language phenomena, involves comparison of spoken and written language and work on communicative body movements (gestures) and their relation to speech.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper concerns the different ways in which hesitation, and hesitation related phenomena like uncertainty, doubt and other phenomena where lack of knowledge is involved are expressed in different cultures. The paper focuses especially on shoulder shrugging as a signal of hesitation or uncertainty, and starts from the observation that shoulder shrugging has different interpretations depending on the interlocutor’s cultural background. It is not commonly used in Eastern cultures while in Western cultures it is a sign of uncertainty and ignorance. The paper reports a small study on the differences in interpretation of a particular video tape gesture, and draws some preliminary conclusions of how this affects intercultural communication between human interlocutors and between humans and conversational agents.

    In this paper we examine some pragmatic concepts that we believe have a potential in relation to three core activities of the IS-field; 1) description and understanding, 2) evaluation, and 3) design. The concepts that we will examine are “social activity”, “communicative act”, “sequences of communicative acts” or “exchange types”, “communicative feedback” and “turn management”. We describe the concepts and then exemplify how they can be used to analyze web services by examining e-mail and Wikipedia as two activities currently on the web. Our analysis leads to a  partly new description of both phenomena. It also leads to a number of open questions concerning the functionalities of both phenomena.

    This paper is presenting a case study of Scandinavian Airlines Systems (SAS) showing how improvements of service quality aspects with Avatars can be managed with a Co-design research approach. The Co-design practices are carried out in different fields of studies. Some of the key advocates of Co-design originate from business. In this study the four steps of Co-design approach is applied. From the first step of Co-design, through interviews, log analysis and a channel survey, findings show that the failed dialogues with Avatar Eva are mainly concerned with five factors: interactivity; dialogue capability; consistency; knowledge; and synonyms. In the second step, carrying out customer workshops, we suggested ten ideal scenarios for Avatar Eva to perform better. In the third step, SAS decision makers decided to implement the first three scenarios: Eva's synonyms; knowledge and Eva's consistency. In the fourth step, another channel survey was carried out as well as a new log analysis to know the impact of the redevelopment above three scenarios. An important result of the study was that the company adopted a continuous use of Co-design as an approach of continuous improvement of the service quality performed by the Avatar Eva. It also opens a new set of questions framing the relation and transformation between Co-design as a research approach for knowledge creation and Co-design as a method for innovation and service quality improvements. The study presents an Extended Co-design Model, which illustrates how the Co-design inspires staff to use it for other functions within and without the SAS.

    Att säkerställa kvalitet i den service som en kommun erbjuder sina medborgare är en komplicerad uppgift. Olika analysinstrument och arbetsformer behöver tillämpas för att säkerställa tillräckligt tydligt medborgarfokus. I detta arbete har en metod utvecklats för att analysera kvalitet i det elektroniska servicemötet. Denna metod bygger på att betrakta organisationens ambitioner och de instrument som tillhandahålls för medborgarna i kontrast till den livssituation som medborgaren befinner sig i. Olika analysinstrument har tillämpats där resultaten pekar på att de tjänster som Marks kommun idag tillhandahåller för elektronisk kontakt inte i tillräckligt grad motsvarar medborgarnas förväntningar. I och med att arbetet i detta inledningsskede bara fokuserat på den elektroniska kontakten så är nästa steg att 1) bredda analysen till att också innefatta övriga sätt att ha kontakt med medborgaren och 2) studera samspelet mellan olika kontaktsätt samt 3) analysera processer och intern koordination hos Marks kommun för att säkerställa kvalitet i kontaktverksamheten.

    Abstract [en]

    Modelling the dynamics of socio-biological complex systems is no trivial task. The dynamics of the spread of influenza in a population constitutes such a system. There are various tools for modelling influenza spread. These methods have shortcomings that one would like to resolve, for example, lack of insight into the patterns of geographic spreading or incongruence with observed epidemiological patterns of spread. We suggest that the epidemiological characteristics reflect an informational systemic structure at a fundamental level. ‘Information’ here refers to David Bohm’s conception of ‘active information’, a kind of information that is intrinsically part of nature, without the need of a ‘knower’ or observer of the information.

    Analogies can be used in most areas of human communication to highlight points of special interest. The creation of specific, specialised patterns, examples, or analogies for facilitating communication is resource consuming. We therefore hypothesize that there are universal patterns that can be used and reused more economically, compared to specialised patterns, for indexing and communicating knowledge. We have conducted empirical tests with altogether 204 students that each one was given 20 minutes to solve problems from six different scientific areas. The results of our tests show clearly an improvement of their problem solving skill when universal patterns were employed as cognitive aids. The average result of the test group that used universal patterns was 81 per cent higher than that of the control group.

    På bara ett par år har elektronisk handel potential att radikalt förändra de ekonomiska och sociala förhållanden i samhället. Internets snabba tillväxt kopplar samman individer och organisationer till ett stort globalt nätverk som representerar enorma möjligheter. Det talas om ett nätverkssamhälle och en nätverksekonomi.

    Elektronisk handel driver företag mot att bedriva affärer på ett fundamentalt nytt sätt. Behovet av att dela information i realtid ökar tillsammans med förändringarna i värdekedjan.

    Syftet med studien är att kartlägga elektronisk handel i allmänhet. Studien fokuseras på hur elektronisk handel används för att länka samman företag, stora som små, från råmaterial till konsumenten. Arbetet belyser hinder och krav i samband med elektronisk handel och det sätt de hanteras på.

    Företagen i undersökningen visar ingen tydlig strävan mot att uppnå en totalt integrerad värdekedja. Grundliga affärsprocesser flyttas mot Internet för att utnyttja nätverkets fördelar. Främst används EDI och online-tjänster som Internetbutiker för elektronisk handel.

    E-handeln ökar stadigt enligt flera gjorda undersökningar, och fler och fler företag ansluter sig till elektronisk handel och framförallt webbhandel. Att införa e-handel kan ge många positiva effekter på företag genom en ökad kundkrets, minskade kostnader för lagerhållning och administrativt arbete. Vi har valt att undersöka olika faktorer som kan påverka en lyckad Implementation av e-handel, och detta har gjorts dels genom att söka i litteratur och artiklar samt att vi genomfört en fallstudie på fyra olika företag i Värmland. Vår studie bygger på en teoretisk och en empirisk del och vi har funnit flera framgångsfaktorer och fallgropar, som kan påverka implementationen av e-handel. Vi har genom fallstudierna identifierat att tre av de fyra företagen redan innan implementationen av webbhandel haft en befintlig kundkrets, vilket de ansåg vara en framgångsfaktor, något som vi däremot inte funnit i teorin. Det finns också tydliga fördelar med ett färdigintegrerat affärssystem, men som vi heller inte identifierat i de studerade källorna. En av de identifierade fallgroparna är att om kommunikationen med sin systemleverantör är undermålig kan det leda till längre utvecklingstid och missförstånd.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this thesis is to show the company the importance and the necessity of the maintenance, trough highlighting its role and impact on company’s profitability and competitiveness, and that’s happened within the analysing of the plant to figure out the failures and short stoppages, find out the causes behind them, convert them into money and the last step is to find out the most suitable and cost effective maintenance strategy based on some important factors such as economy, and quality to probably eliminate or reduce the number of failures and short stoppages. According to the analysis, capacity verifying data collection which the company has done during a random working daily shift and a technical faults list about the possibly failures and short stoppages which occur during the operation, it shows that there are some downtime due to management, operation and logistic, but the main focus was on the technical faults which has correlation with maintenance. In the result it shows which technical and mechanical problems the machines usually faces, the causes behind them, how much it cost the company when they breaks down and finally some suggestions and recommendations about how these problems can probably be solved based on economy and quality.
