The concept of historical consciousness as an interpretive frame for historical media2013Ingår i: Papers & abstracts: Kritiska perspektiv på historiedidaktiken, 2013, nr 1, s. 188-202Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents an outline for how the concept of historical consciousness can be understood regarding (i) its definition, application, and qualitiative character, (ii) its relation to other history didactical concepts (i.e. ‘historical culture’ and ‘historical use’), (iii) its development, (iv) its significance, and, finally, how an aggregated understanding of the concept can be used as an interpretive frame for historical media. The paper will not present any new ideas on how to understand or approach the concept, but rather a selection of theoretical approaches that can be found in history didactical research. Given the rather limited space in this paper, some of the presentations will be shorter than others.

The Concept of Historical Consciousness in Swedish History Didactical Research2013Ingår i: Cultural and Religious Diversity and Its Implications for History Education / [ed] Joanna Wojdon, Schwalbach: Wochenshau Verlag , 2013, 1, s. 207-224Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents a study of how the concept of historical consciousness is defined, applied and justified in Swedish history didactical research. The study finds that there is a common ground for understanding what  a historical consciousness is, but that the concept is applied in a variety of ways. It is suggested that this variation is one reason why the concept is generally believed to be difficult to define and apply, since the application of the concept influences how a historical consciousness is interpreted. It is also suggested that the concept could be rendered more versatile by further theoretical investigation into how the concept’s definition and applications are connected.

    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the concept of historical consciousness. It argues that a focus on the epistemological problems of the concept can be a way of constructing a theory of the concept that both incorporates the diverse perspectives that exist in research about the concept and specifies how a historical consciousness can be developed in an individual.

Uses of history in history education2016Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This compilation thesis contains an introductory chapter and four original articles. The studies comprising this thesis all concern aspects of how historical culture is constituted in historical media and history teachers’ narratives and teaching. It is argued that the teaching of history is a complex matter due to an internal tension resulting from the fact that history is both a product and a process at the same time. While historical facts, and knowledge thereof, are an important aspect of history, history is also a product of careful interpretation and reconstruction. This study analyses and discusses how history is constituted in history textbooks and popular history magazines, i.e. two common historical media, and in teachers’ narratives and teaching of history. The study finds that the historical media studied generally tend to present history as void of perspective, interpretation and representation, suggesting this to be the culturally warranted form of historical exposition. Moreover, the teachers studied also tend to approach history as if it were not contingent on interpretation and reconstruction. These results indicate that the history disseminated in historical media and history classrooms presents history in a factual way and disregards the procedural aspects of history. Applying the history didactical concepts of historical consciousness, historical culture and uses of history, this thesis argues that an essential aspect of historical understanding is an appreciation of the contextual contingency that characterises history. All history is conceived within a particular context that is pertinent to why and how a certain version of history is constructed. Furthermore, all history is also received within a particular context by people with particular preconceptions of history that are contextually contingent, in the sense that they are situated in a certain historical culture. Readers of historical media are members of societies and are thus affected by how history is perceived and discussed in these contexts. This thesis argues that an awareness of these aspects of history is an important factor for furthering a complex understanding of history that encompasses the tension highlighted above.

Historieundervisningens existentialiserande potential2017Ingår i: Nordidactica: Journal of Humanities and Social Science Education, ISSN 2000-9879, nr 2, s. 59-74Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents a study of how history education can be understood as a practice directed towards existentialisation. Through classroom observation, teacher interviews and focus group interviews with students in grade 9 in Swedish lower secondary school, a complex teaching practice is uncovered where history teachers have to deal with matters pertaining to disseminating a meaningful narrative of the past, a critical approach to these narratives and an awareness of historicity and its implications for how we approach and understand the past. These results are then discussed from the perspectives of how history education can promote existentialisation among students, and what challenges and opportunities this may present to history teachers.

Young children's historical consciousness: A Swedish case study2017Ingår i: Yearbook (of the International Society for History Didactics), ISSN 1608-8751, Vol. 38, s. 215-234Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents a study of how groups of 7-year-old pupils in Swedish primary school with little or no experience of history education expressed historical consciousness. The results of the study show that a perception of linear time where the past is seen as distinct and separated from the present is a key characteristic among the children that showed indication of historical consciousness. These results suggest a view of historical consciousness as something individuals may develop, rather than something that is innately human and anthropologically universal, and that a focus on the fostering of a perception of linear time and the epistemological challenges this poses, may be key in enabling and developing children’s historical consciousness.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to unfold and explain the historical Swedish view upon the Samic people. The fundamental question asked is: ”In which manner, or manners, are the Samic people in the so called Lappmarkerna portrayed by Swedish missionaries during the 17th century?

The study makes use of five Swedish missionaries’ written accounts of their travels in Lappmarkerna during the 17th century. The primary sources are examined through a hermeneutic method and the results are analyzed from a postcolonial theoretical framework based mostly on Edward Said’s Orientalism and Ania Loomba’s Colonialism/postcolonialism.

The results unfold a view of the Samic people as indeed something other than the rest of the Swedes. The Samic people were described as cowardly, lazy, small in stature, not particularly strong, vigorous, fairly intelligent, disgraceful in the context of trade and very skilled with a bow and at hunting in general, but lacking any inclination towards war.

The view of the Samic people as the other is however mostly not based on a suggestion that there were any ontological differences between the Samic people and the Swedes. On the contrary, the described differences were mostly ascribed to historical and cultural causes. It’s plausible that the explanation for the limited claims about any fundamental differences is found in the Swedish missionaries’ purpose of producing accounts of their travels. The Swedish missionaries were probably inclined to emphasize the basic similiarities in order to establish that the Samic people were possible to convert to Christianity as well as foster into becoming proper Swedish subjects.

    Abstract [en]

The presence of digital games are growing in the minds of young people. Since the 80´s the gaming industry has come to grow past both the music industry and the movie industry. In present time teachers face students who in at least some way are influenced by games. Therefore it’s vital to understand what potential games have for educational purposes. This study will therefore examine in what manners history is represented in Bethesda Software’s Fallout 4. Furthermore the purpose of the essay is to grasp the role history plays in Fallout 4 and in what manner history interplay with the historical counsciousness of the person playing it.

The fundamental question asked is: In what ways, if any, is history used in Fallout 4 and what are the implications for the historical counsciousness of the person playing? To answer the question I examined the representation of history within the game’s interactive dialogues, environment and story.

Following the analyze of the results the conclusion can be made that the players historical counsciousness is mobilized as an effect of primarily the clash between contrafactual history and factual history. The players critical thinking is triggered within the forementioned context and certain parts of the game can therefore be said to stimulate and assist the player in learning to think about history.

    Abstract

Linking Sweden to the war - Insurgents of the Norwegian resistance movement 1942-1945

The main aim of this paper is to illuminate the activity of the Norwegian resistance movement during 1942-1945 in the area of Finnskogen in northern Värmland (Sweden) to the eastern parts of Hedmark in Norway. The theoretical perspective being that of a movement orientated view on the Norwegian resistance. In order to achieve this I will focus on two main questions:

    1. How did they administrate the activity of couriers and refugees?
    2. How did people get involved and what kind of people did the resistance movement involve?

The method used to illuminate the activity of the Norwegian resistance movement will focus on sampling and processing data linked with the specific area. A field study based on interviews with former members of the resistance movement will be conducted.

My conclusion is that people in this area crossed the border during the war and the main reason for doing so was to get away from the everyday boredom and instead find a life of excitement and purpose.

The common traits of the members were that they were passionate youngsters, unmarried and willing to take risks.

The drive of the resistance movement was a perceived sense of powerlessness and anger towards the occupying force that practiced a total control of symbols, radio, newspapers, schools and the implementation of the German language in the Norwegian society.

    Abstract [en]

This doctoral dissertation studies the relationship between customary tenants (landbor) and landlords in Sweden during the 17th and 18th centuries. This was a basic relationship within Swedish society and thus fundamental to economic, social, juridical and political life. A detailed study of this relationship can thus provide knowledge concerning the function of and changes within society. The study concentrates on the frequent contacts between the owners and users of the land, a topic previous research has largely ignored. The form and content of these contacts is accordingly something quite unknown. Consequently, the point of departure of this study is three elementary questions:

What was the relationship between tenants and landlords?

How did the relation between tenants and landlords change?

Why did this change take place?

To be able to study the actors that were the backbone of this relation, and to answer the questions, I have chosen to study the estate of Uppsala University, and the relationship between the university peasants and Uppsala University as landlords during the period 1650-1790. The reason for choosing this particular estate is the nature and extent of the source material, which makes it possible to conduct a very detailed study over a long span of time.

    Abstract [en]

The current field of research concerning the impact of railroads in Sweden beside from the State main-line network is relatively narrow. Including cultural impact to the area narrows the results even further. The purpose of this study is to open the field even more into the local societies and to what extent the impact of the introduction of railroad might have had on smaller county villages. Sweden holds a unique position concerning “station towns” or “railways towns” in terms of railway policy and the industrial development in towns that were affected by the railway, as the affected towns continued development were based on a hybrid between direct democracy and adaptations of city-law policies.

This study takes place in Kisa, a small town in southern Östergötland that during the beginning of the 20th century turned into a municipal community due to the building of Östra centralbanan (roughly translated Eastern central-line). The aim has been to apply and compare earlier results concerning station towns in general research with local research on the town of Kisa. The tools for investigating the impact of the railroad in Kisa include demographical, industrial and criminal development of the town. Local letters sent to the district moot, in Swedish termed as kommunalstämma, as well as an insight to the local newspaper are also presented in this study. The conclusions of this study approves in many forms to the results of earlier research, but also opens questions for further research regarding the interacting relationship between sociology, voluntary sector and cultural differences in the early industrial station towns.

    Abstract [sv]

Change and absence of change in historical narration: The Pentecostal Filadelfia Church in Stockholm telling its story2012Ingår i: Narration and Narratives as an Interdisciplinary Field of Study, 2012Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the paper is to discuss the ability of the narrative perspective to explain change, and especially absence of change, in a group’s way of telling its story. The empirical case is the Filadelfia Church in Stockholm. In the discussion, I will particularly emphasize the need to interpret the story in relation to context but also in relation to the group’s norms and goals.

En framgångsrik främling: Filadelfiaförsamlingen i Stockholm - självbild i historieskrivning och verksamhet 1910-19802014Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis is to examine how a group’s self-image is created, sustained and if necessary changed during the revolutionary 20th century. The study takes its point of  eparture in the idea that a self-image is essential for an organisation’s cohesion and collective identity. The study object is the Pentecostal Philadelphia church in, Sweden, established in 1910. In concrete terms, the thesis examines the self-image of the church as it is expressed in its narratives and activities from 1910 to 1980. The lf-image is analysed with the aid of the concepts ‘boundaries’ and ‘symbols’ and in relation to social and organisational change processes. In the main the empirical material  onsists of official documents such as jubilee publications, annual reports and the weekly newspaper Evangelii Härold.

The main contribution of the thesis is an analysis of the church’s historical narrative. In this narrative the overall theme appears to be the small and faithful group that due to God’s influence and despite opposition became a major  nd significant church -- a success story. The theme also remains the same when the circumstances change. Narrative theory emphasises that the narrative has to be changeable order to be serviceable. However, my study shows that the narration, at least at the level highlighted in the thesis, is inert. The self-image seems to be difficult to change but is not necessarily static. The narrative is shown to include strategies for dealing with internal change processes and changes in society.

Pingströrelsens rumslighet: Filadelfiaförsamlingens rumslighet i Stockholm 1907-19602011Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

The Pentecostal congregation’s place within the City: The Philadelphia Church in Stockholm2012Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Studies of the Christian movements’ spatiality in terms of premises and buildings seems mainly to be focus upon architectural history surveys or analyses of layout of rooms and the interior decoration. Historical and sociological as well as theological reasons are primarily highlighted in these studies. However, they seem to lack the agents’ perspectives on the premises.

The paper focuses on how the agents used and described their own premises and other places (the city's physical dimension) and how they were made a part of the agents’ group identity. This perspective is partly inspired by the theoretical discussion about place that exists in Human geography. Within that discipline place is discussed as an on-‐ going creation through conjunction of the physical space with human practices, ideas, strategies and emotions.

The aim of the paper is to shed light on the above-‐mentioned topic by studying the emerging Swedish Pentecostal revival and especially the Filadelfia Church’s in Stockholm premises and use of place during the early 1900s. The study is based on annual reports, the congregation’s weekly and jubilee publications.

    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on the poor regulation in year 1871 and 1918, in Sweden. By examining the regulation texts with help by Carol Bacchis method the study is easy to overview. With theories about gender, class and citizenship as the theoretical framework the study provides an analysis that the gender equality was poor and in booth class topics and the citizenship topics the equality and the love for the week and poor, subtle.

The empirical data illustrate that the law text speaks directly to the man, and thereby leaves the women out of the text, naming her only by the word ”wife” and once as women in the 1871 regulation. The gender equality was low and the man hade all the official power. The citizenship ideal was a hard working and sober man that took good care of himself hand his family. If the man did not succeed in this, his citizenship was not fulfilled.

If you received money by the state as a poor subsidy, you lost your right to vote in national elections. This, and the fact that, if you hade family with money, they should take care of you instead of the state, by law, increased the class society.

The synthesis argues that the thoughts about the less fortunate is not so very different, then as of today.

False Self-Employment and Other Precarious Forms of Employment in the ‘Grey Area’ of the Labour Market2015Ingår i: International Journal of Comparative Labour Law and Industrial Relations, ISSN 0952-617X, E-ISSN 1875-838X, Vol. 31, nr 4, s. 411-429Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to discuss the problem of false (bogus) self-employment and other precarious forms of employment in the ‘grey area’ between genuine self-employment and subordinate employment in Sweden. Why has this area developed in a longer and shorter perspective? How does the use of disguised and ambiguous forms of employment affect workers, industrial relations and regular labour standards? Examples are given from the construction, road haulage and cleaning industries. The article indicates that work in the grey area has become more and more common in recent years, not only in the context of east-west labour migration, but also among Swedish workers. The author also discusses this development.

A conversation on milk: Exploring Swedish milk history on Arla's milk panels2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 40 poäng / 60 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Sweden is one of the heaviest milk consuming countries in the world. The milk- and dairy ‘giant’ Arla, is the largest distributing company of milk- and dairy in Sweden. Since, 1975 Arla began to use the back of their own milk packages as a channel for advertisement, facts, and information. These milk panels have since, been distributed to generations of Swedes. In this thesis I explore the conversations Arla have been mediating through these panels and further how historical and contemporary debates have influenced and altered the conversations conveyed. Inspired by social semiotic theory, I approach the panels to analyse how language and societal debates changes have shaped discourses on the panels, but also how the panel's comments on and reshapes societal debates. The study has been confined study to five years, 1976, 1986, 1996, 2006 and 2016. In order to retrieve and analyse the empirical material I used discourse analysis (or as I prefer to call conversation analysis). The theoretical framework builds on ideas of modernisation using three key theories, Social semiotics, propaganda theory and also theories on nationalism. In the empirical findings of my study, I have distinguished key conversations which I think represent the material as well as societal and contemporary debates. The material shows that Arla on the on hand continue on a tradition of milk marketing in terms of subjects and themes appearing on the panels. On the other hand, Arla is also constantly reinventing themselves in their marketing adjusting to the debates and trends in society.

'Favoritim is the Secret of Efficiency!' Admiral Sir John Fisher as the First Sea Lord, 1904-19102016Ingår i: Management & Organizational History, ISSN 1744-9359, E-ISSN 1744-9367, Vol. 11, nr 3, s. 253-275Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Favoritism in the organizational context is often regarded as dysfunctional and detrimental to organizational performance. On the other hand, it could function as a tacit-knowledge-based mechanism for making sure that the right people are in right positions in an organization, especially under conditions of rapid and forceful change. This study focuses on the leadership of the controversial Admiral Sir John ‘Jacky’ Fisher (1841–1920). Fisher, as the First Sea Lord of the British Admiralty, led the Royal Navy through a signi cant but disputed technological and organizational turnaround during the pre- World War I (pre-WWI) naval arms race between Britain and Germany. Fisher saw that he would achieve his aims essentially by appointing his favorites and cronies to key positions throughout the naval organization. The aim in this study is to highlight the most important facets of the phenomenon from a strategic-leadership perspective.
