    Abstract [en]

This article is based on interviews with five Swedish artists, Ann Edholm, Maya Eizin, Marianne Lindberg de Geer, Eva Löfdahl and Sophie Tottie. Since these artists show a consciousness of gender and of the production of meaning in the visual arts, we found it interesting to connect their experience with the production of knowledge, which is one of the concerns of feminist art historians. The interviewed were not feminists in any determined sense. They represent divrese career stages as well as diverse artistic expressions. In the interviews various topics were touched upon - such as what it means to be inscribed within the "feminine"; their relationship to the concept and identity of the artists, whether visual representations may carry an essential femininity, and being a woman artists in today's art world. None of them was willing to identify anything essentially feminine in art. Instead, aspects of gender differentiation were discussed regard to positionings and strategies in the context of education, recieveing grants, sharing studios, participating in all-women shows, stating opinions in conferences and debates, and so on. A common view was that art critics and other interpreters often have a narrow outlook and lack an independent attitude in relation to the dominant ways of description and valuation of art. We take this as an urgent appeal request from artists to the feminist art historian who do research within contemporary art today.

En rumslig GIS-analys avgrönområden i Stockholm: Tillgång och konsekvenser av en pågåendeurbanisering2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: Animation, 3D, manus, manusutveckling, film, dramaturgi, karaktärer

Displacement of the equilibrium in lipase catalysed transesterification in ethyl octanoate by continous evaporation of ethanol1992In: Biotechnology letters, ISSN 0141-5492, E-ISSN 1573-6776, Vol. 14, no 4, p. 263-268Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A simple method to overcome low equilibrium conversion in lipase catalysed resolution of alcohols by transesterification was developed. Ethyl octanoate was used as acyl donor as well as solvent and the reaction equilibrium was shifted by applying reduced pressure, forcing the co-product ethanol to evaporate during the reaction. Using a lipase from Candida antarctica 2-octanol, 1-phenyl ethanol, 1-cyclohexyl ethanol and trans-2-methylcyclohexanol were resolved in good optical and chemical yields.

Tertiary Alcohol- or β-Hydroxy γ-Lactam-Based HIV-1 Protease Inhibitors: Microwave Applications in Batch and Continuous Flow Organic Synthesis2011Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Since the outbreak of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the 1980s, the disease has cost the lives of over 30 million people, and a further 33 million are currently living with the HIV infection. With the appropriate treatment, HIV/AIDS can today be regarded as a chronic but manageable disease. However, treatment is not available globally and UNAIDS still estimates that there are currently 5000 AIDS-related deaths worldwide per day.

HIV protease inhibitors (PIs) constitute one of the fundaments of HIV treatment, and are commonly used in so-called highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), together with reverse transcriptase inhibitors. Although there are ten PIs on the market, there is still a need for novel structures. The rapid development of resistant strains, due to the high frequency of mutations, together with the commonly observed adverse effects of the drugs available, illustrate the need to develop new potent structures.

Two novel scaffolds were investigated in this work. A tertiary alcohol-containing scaffold comprising a three-carbon tether, and a β-hydroxy γ-lactam-based scaffold were designed, synthesized and evaluated using enzyme- and cell-based assays. X-ray analyses of inhibitors from each class provided information on inhibitor–protease interactions. The inhibitors containing the tertiary alcohol provided at best an enzymatic inhibition (Ki) of 2.3 nM, and an inhibition in the cell-based assay (EC50) of 0.17 µM. The γ-lactam-based inhibitors exhibited better inhibition than the first series; the best values being Ki = 0.7 nM and EC50 = 0.04 µM.

The second part of these studies involved the evaluation of a novel non-resonance continuous-flow microwave instrument. The instrument was validated regarding heating capacity, temperature stability and temperature homogeneity. A number of model reactions were performed with low- and high-microwave-absorbing solvents. It was found that the microwave heating source allowed rapid temperature adjustment, together with easily regulated, flow-dependent reaction times, providing an efficient tool for reaction optimisation.

Evaluation of a Nonresonant Microwave Applicator for Continuous-Flow Chemistry Applications2012In: Organic Process Research & Development, ISSN 1083-6160, E-ISSN 1520-586X, Vol. 16, no 5, p. 1053-1063Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The concept of a nonresonant microwave applicator for continuous-flow organic chemistry is introduced and evaluated. The frequency of the incident microwave radiation can be adjusted between 2.4 and 2.5 GHz to optimize the energy absorbance. The temperature of the reaction is monitored by five IR sensors, and their signals can be used to automatically adjust the power output from the microwave generator. The heating of several different solvents up to 20 degrees C above the standard boiling point has been explored. Several different organic reactions have been successfully carried out using a 200 mm X (sic) 3 mm tubular borosilicate reactor and a flow between 47 and 2120 mu L/min. The microwave heating pattern was visualized with an IR camera. The transformations include palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions (oxidative Heck and Suzuki reactions), heterocyclic chemistry (oxathiazolone and Fischer indole synthesis), rearrangement (Claisen), and a Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction. A scale-out to 57 mmol/h was performed with the Fischer indole reaction.

    Hiv-1 Protease Inhibitors with a Tertiary Alcohol Containing a Transition-State Mimic and Various P2/P1´ Substituents2011In: MedChemComm, ISSN 2040-2503, E-ISSN 2040-2511, Vol. 2, no 8, p. 701-709Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Two series, including in total 18 novel HIV-1 protease inhibitors, comprising a tertiary alcohol as thetransition-state mimic have been synthesised and evaluated. Replacement of the previously used, butmetabolically unstable, indanol amide group with amino acid derived aliphatic P2–P3 moietiesprovided potent inhibitors with low Ki- and EC50-values (2.7 nM and 2.0 mM, respectively). The P10subunit was varied using 10 different aromatic and heteroaromatic substituents furnishing thecorresponding inhibitors with retained activity. Permeability and stability studies showed examples inthe same range as Atazanavir. X-Ray crystallographic analysis of two selected inhibitor enzyme cocomplexes(9a and 9d) supplied detailed structural information. The binding modes were compared tothose of Atazanavir and a previously reported indanol amide containing inhibitor (14). The novelinhibitors with an elongated P1' side chain enabled a previously unexploited edge-on interaction withPhe53/153. Exchange of the previously used indanol amide P2 moiety, with a tert-leucine derived P2–P3side chain, furnished small main chain displacements in the S2–S3 pocket. The methyl amide in the P3 position caused a 2 Å shift of the Arg8/108 in comparison to 14, indicating the flexibility of the proteaseactive site.

Värdepappershandel för egen räkning i aktiebolag: Rörelse eller kapitalförvaltning?2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Approaches to learning and perceived stress among first-semester psychology students2015In: EARLI 2015 Book of Abstracts, 2015, p. 728-729Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Previous research suggests an interplay between students’ well-being, learning activities, and learning outcomes. This study explores the linkages between students’ approaches to learning, perceived stress, as well as expected and final grades within a sample of first-semester psychology students at a Swedish university. The results suggest that students adopting surface approaches to learning perceive higher levels of stress, while strategic approaches seem associated with lower levels of perceived stress. There was no association between deep approaches to learning and perceived stress. Students adopting surface approaches or reporting high levels of perceived stress expected lower course grades than students adopting deep or strategic approaches to learning. Students adopting surface approaches or perceiving high levels of stress typically overestimated their final course grades. The highest levels of perceived stress were reported by students who achieved quite good, but not excellent grades. The discussion relates these findings to the potential influence of various factors such as perceived demands and feelings of control. Possible practical applications of the findings are also discussed.

Diversity in students’ approaches to learning in parallel psychology courses2015In: NoFa5 Book of Abstracts, 2015, p. 153-153Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The SAL (Student Approaches to Learning) tradition focuses on mapping and assessing students’ approaches to learning in the learning context of higher education. Previous research suggests that approaches to learning are indeed sensitive to modifications in the learning context, and influence the quality of student learning. However, the knowledge regarding variations in student approaches relating to learning flexibility is still limited.

This study investigates whether a natural learning context, providing parallel and resembling courses, involves different approaches to learning. Second semester psychology students were asked to describe their approaches to learning separately for two parallel courses. The analyses suggest that even though individual students seem to exhibit a consistent core regarding their approaches to learning, alternations between similar learning contexts can bring about large changes in both surface and deep approaches to learning. Strategic approaches to learning seem less flexible, but not unaffected.

The findings add to the theoretical idea of considering approaches to learning as a flexible construct, which is sensitive to smaller transitions in learning contexts. From a practical view, the results support the idea that there are ways of designing powerful learning environments.

Högskolestudenters lärande: Ett lärstrategiskt perspektiv på studier i psykologi2017Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

University students’ approaches to learning influence academic achievement and qualities in learning outcomes. Approaches to learning develop in a process where student factors interact with factors of the learning context. Students’ subjective perceptions of their learning environment seem to be crucial.

This thesis draws on an established research stand in aiming to contribute to a deeper understanding of how students adapt their approaches to learning to perceived contextual factors in a specific learning context. In three studies, conceptions for development and variation of approaches to learning among psychology students at a Swedish university are examined.

Study I examined how approaches to learning vary with expected and final course grades, and student abilities to predict academic achievement (N = 189). Overall, students had low self-assessment skills, with students adopting surface approach to learning having the poorest skills. Students adopting a strategic approach to learning achieved high grades, while students adopting a surface approach to learning had poorer performances. Students adopting a deep approach to learning expected high grades but the exam did not favour a deep approach.

Study II aimed at describing similarities in factors that psychology students themselves, despite them adopting different approaches to learning, considered influenced their studying activities. A selective student sample described their studying activities in repeated interviews (N = 11, N = 7). The development of approaches to learning was described as a negotiation where different aspects of learning were related to each other. The students described a common set of reference points: 1) previous studying activities, 2) course recommendations, 3) learning outcomes, 4) assessment demands, and 5) estimated effort. Despite great variation in students’ tendencies to adapt approaches to learning, the adaption process resulted in a gradual homogenization of studying activities.

Study III examined whether minor variations in parallel learning contexts would give rise to differences in students’ regulation of approaches to learning and whether tendencies to vary differed between students with different approaches to learning (N = 195). All approaches to learning varied between learning contexts, but the strategic approach to learning varied less than surface and deep approaches. Students with a low surface, a high deep or a high strategic approach to learning varied most, while students with a high surface, a low deep or a low strategic approach to learning were more stable.

The results show that approaches to learning among psychology students seem to develop in a process of negotiation where different aspects of learning are interrelated. For strategic reasons, examinations seem to drive students towards a surface approach to learning. Students’ shared interpretations of factors of the learning context seem to result in a gradual homogenisation of studying activities, despite different students showing different tendencies to adapt their approaches to learning to a specific learning context. A strategic approach seems optimal for academic achievement. In summary, this thesis shows how fine-grained studies can contribute to a deeper understanding of the context specific development of students’ approaches to learning.

Självskattad stress och prestation i experimentella minnestest2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Studieapproach, stress, studieresultat och förmåga att bedöma egen prestation2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

First-semester students’ capacity to predict academic achievement as related to approaches to learning2018In: Journal of Further and Higher Education, ISSN 0309-877X, E-ISSN 0013-1326Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

While expecting high grades is important for achieving high grades, previous research suggests that students’ ways of approaching their studies relate to academic outcomes. Focusing on first-semester students being new to a discipline, this study investigated how approaches to learning and expectations were related to expected and final academic outcomes within an educational setting. Before a written examination, psychology students (N = 189) completed the 52-item version of ASSIST and estimated course grades. Later, final grades were added. Results showed that 18 per cent of the students provided perfect ratings of their final grades while most underestimated their grades. A surface approach was associated with expecting lower grades while the strategic and deep approaches were associated with expecting better grades. Both surface and high strategic approaches were associated with better final grades while there was no statistically significant association for the deep approach. Taken together, students being new to a discipline have difficulties estimating their grades. Overall students reporting either a surface or strategic approach achieved the grades they expected. For the deep approach, there was no such association. To conclude, the variations between approaches probably relate to the discipline being new and to the examination favoring a strategic approach.

Linkages between approaches to learning, perceived stress and expected and actual academic outcomes among first-semester psychology students2018In: Journal of Further and Higher Education, ISSN 0309-877X, E-ISSN 0013-1326, Vol. 42, no 1, p. 116-129Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Previous research indicates that higher educational students’ perceptions of stress are in part related to the teaching and learning context, and influence academic outcomes. This study intends to deepen our understanding of these processes by examining the linkages between approaches to learning, perceived stress and expected and actual academic outcomes within a specific educational setting. First-semester psychology students (N = 191) completed a questionnaire, including short versions of ASSIST and PSS, and estimated their course grade before a written examination. Later, actual grades were added. The results suggest that surface approach to learning is positively associated with high levels of perceived stress, and reflected in lower levels of expected grades. The relationships between deep and strategic approaches to learning and perceived stress seem to be more ambivalent, despite positive associations with expected grades. Coping and motivational aspects of the concepts of surface and strategic approaches to learning seem to be crucial to understanding the linkages between the examined factors. Also, the significance of a strategic approach in relation to actual academic outcomes is highlighted.

Students' adoption of course-specific approaches to learning in two parallel courses2016In: European Journal of Psychology of Education, ISSN 0256-2928, E-ISSN 1878-5174, Vol. 31, no 2, p. 209-223Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research on students' adoption of course-specific approaches to learning in parallel courses is limited and inconsistent. This study investigated second-semester psychology students' levels of deep, surface and strategic approaches in two courses running in parallel within a real-life university setting. The results showed significant differences in course-specific adoption regardless of approach. However, the strategic approach seemed more stable. Sub-groups of students exhibited substantial variation: more than half of the students adopted similar approaches in both courses while large minorities showed great variability. Students scoring low on the surface approach, high on the deep approach or high on the strategic approach to learning were flexible in adopting different parallel approaches. However, students scoring high on the surface approach, low on the deep approach or low on the strategic approach seemed stable across contexts. This suggests that even smaller variations in teaching and learning environments can influence students' approaches to learning.

Psychology students’ perceptions of the correspondence between approaches to learning and outcomes2015In: EARLI 2015 Book of Abstracts, 2015Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Psychology students' perceptions of the correspondence between approaches to learning and academic outcome were mapped and compared with actual influence. Both quantitative and qualitative data were analysed. Preliminary results suggest a successive homogenization of student activities related to coursework. The perception of applying more "efficient" ways of dealing with coursework, corresponding better to examination demands, was identified as an important driver. Although the development towards perceived efficacy could be described as students successively adopting higher levels of surface approaches to learning, students in general judged such approaches as resulting in poorer examination grades, compared to deep approaches. However, surface approaches to learning were negatively correlated to examination grades, but to a lesser extent than students thought, while deep approaches turned out to be less influential. Strategic approaches to learning stood out as having the most positive impact on course grades, both as judged by the students and in actual fact.

Targeting efficient studying – first-semester psychology students’ experiences2018In: Educational research (Windsor. Print), ISSN 0013-1881, E-ISSN 1469-5847, Vol. 60, no 1, p. 80-96Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Previous research indicates that critical student features, such as approaches to learning and decisions of how to organise studying activities, develops in bi-directional interactions between personal and learning environmental factors. However, attempts to influence students’ studying activities in certain directions by manipulating the learning environment often prove unsuccessful. A deeper analysis of the student perspective is needed, since students’ subjective perceptions of the learning environment to a great extent will influence their individual ways of going about studying and learning.  In particular, we need to clarify which aspects steer students’ towards focusing on certain studying activities in a particular course context.

Purpose: This study aimed at elaborating the student perspective of the process of selection of studying activities by searching for similarities in references to factors perceived as guiding this process among students representing very different combinations of approaches to learning.

Sample, design and methods: Students’ approaches to learning were evaluated with the Approaches and Study Skills Inventory for Students (ASSIST) in two successive psychology introductory courses (N=261). A random (N=5) and a purposive (N=6) student sample was then selected and interviewed. Seven of the students also took part in follow-up interviews six months later. The qualitative analysis aimed at mapping and extracting similarities in students’ perceptions of and dealing with the selection of studying activities.

Results: Despite great differences in students’ approaches to learning and reported actual studying activities, all students interviewed referred to a common set of reference points perceived as guiding their ways of studying, i.e. their perception of 1) previous studying experiences, 2) course recommendations, 3) learning outcomes, 4) assessment demands, and 5) time and effort spent on studying.

Conclusions: Students’ selections of studying activities are suggested to be seen as a process of negotiation based on input from certain reference points. In the course context under study the targeting process resulted in a general homogenization of studying activities and permitted students to feel they were studying efficiently. Although possible generalization of the results remains to be investigated, it is suggested that understanding students’ perceptions of reference points and general understanding of the targeting process could contribute to a better grasp of how student factors, course contexts, and students’ perceptions of these, interact.

ASSESSMENT OF LARGE-SCALE ENERGY STORAGE FOR GRID-CONNECTED SOLAR PARKS IN NAMIBIA2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the impact and feasibility of implementing large scale energy storage systems for the purpose of energy shifting at grid connected solar parks in Namibia. The country, which receives a large amount of solar irradiance, is ideal for the construction of solar parks. However, as solar parks are an intermittent energy source, energy storage systems are becoming an increasingly attractive option in order to decrease losses and secure the supply of electricity. For this purpose, a model in Matlab was created to simulate different storage types. The input data was simulated with site-specific information for Windhoek in PVsyst and then evaluated in an economic analysis where electricity tariff pricing, battery investment costs and exchange rates were the main variables.

This report is structured through starting with an introduction where the background of the Namibian electricity market and essential terms are presented. This is followed by a detailed description of the Matlab model construction and a literature review of battery types and storage systems. The simulation models and results are then evaluated both from an economical and technical perspective and the main findings are presented.

Through this project, it was concluded that energy storage is not feasible today with current market conditions. Even with favorable electricity tariffs and Namibian exchange rates, storage technologies are currently too expensive today in order for it to be economically defensible. The forecast is however promising, where decreasing investment prices and an increased of R&D in the technology is expected. From the constructed model, it was however concluded that sodium-sulfur is by far the best option today. The reason for this is the low initial cost and relatively high round-trip efficiency of the technology. The model also proved the potential of increased electricity security from using energy shifting. With energy storage, the delivered energy from solar parks now coincide better with the demand since the intermittency is decreased. However, for future studies a detailed analysis of energy storage effects on the grid is recommended.

    Abstract [en]

Tanum, is situated in the north part of Bohuslän in Sweden and is the most famouse area of Rock Art of the world. It´s now a World Heritige since 1994. More than 100 000 images are carved on the rocks near by the sea. Archaeologists believe that carved feet and cupmarks can date from mesoliticom and neoliticum. During bronze age the sealevel was 15-20 meters higher. Carvings of humans can date from the beginning of bronze age around 1800, period I, but during late bronze age 1000-300 bc, period III-V, motives of humans became more common. Of all the 4154 carvings of human figures, only a few of them, aboute 45 figures, can be identifide as woman.  This study will try to answere why there are so few carvings of woman, what the carvings of female figures shows on the rocks and in what context are the they carved? Is the female figures an image of a godess, a woman or a priestess? Can the carvings tell us something aboute the womans life during the the bronze age?

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

To provide additional knowledge on the long term effects of railway and road traffic noise socio-acoustic surveys were performed in two residential areas exposed to road traffic noise (highway and major roads) and two areas exposed to railway noise (124 trains per day). Results were obtained for 974 individuals exposed to comparative sound levels ranging from LAeq,24h 45 to 65 dB. Road traffic caused significantly more noise annoyance than railway traffic, however, the difference decreased somewhat at higher sound levels above LAeq,24h 60 dB. For Lden the difference in annoyance between the two noise sources was larger and the difference increased at higher sound levels. At all sound levels, road traffic noise caused more disturbances of rest/relaxation (LAeq,24h) and sleep quality (Lnight) but less disturbance of conversation than railway noise. It was concluded that noise from railway traffic overall causes less adverse health effects than road traffic noise, in cases with a relatively moderate number of trains per day.
