Creating space for students' concerns: Embodied feedback practices in hairdressing education2017In: Learning, Culture and Social Interaction, ISSN 2210-6561, E-ISSN 2210-657X, Vol. 14, p. 79-93Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore feedback practices in situated activities and how such actions of assessment emerge from embodied participation in classroom interactions between teachers and students. Using video recordings of teacher and student interactions in hairdressing education, we investigate through conversation analysis how feedback practices such as making loops are initiated and enabled between the participants in situated activities. Feedback in the practice of loops is contingent upon an embodied moment-to-moment monitoring and collaboration between the teacher and student, and is initiated with a concern from the student that is responded to by the teacher, enabling feedback to become a common exploration of professional knowledge. Overall, the findings show how feedback is mutually produced, making visible that salient aspects of the education are emanating from the student’s own concern.

Föräldrars möjlighet till inflytande i förskolan: Vad vill föräldrar ha inflytande över och vilka möjligheter till inflytande anser pedagogerna att förskolan ger2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Changing Epidemiology of Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome: Results of a National Swedish Cohort Study2019In: Journal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, ISSN 2047-9980, E-ISSN 2047-9980, Vol. 8, no 2, article id e010893Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background Norwood surgery provides a palliative surgical option for hypoplastic left heart syndrome and has been available in Sweden since 1993. The practice of prenatal ultrasound screening was gradually implemented in the same era, resulting in an increased prenatal detection rate. Our primary aims were to study changes in the incidence of live births, prenatal detection rate, and the termination of pregnancies over time. The secondary aims were to study the proportion of live-borns undergoing surgery and to identify factors that influenced whether surgery was or was not performed. Methods and Results Neonates with hypoplastic left heart syndrome with aortic atresia born 1990-2010 were identified through national databases, surgical files, and medical records. The fetal incidence was estimated from the period when prenatal screening was rudimentary. The study period was divided into the presurgical, early surgical, and late surgical periods. The incidence was calculated as the overall yearly incidence for each time period and sex separately. Factors influencing whether surgery was performed were analyzed using Cox-logistic regression. The incidence at live birth decreased from 15.4 to 8.4 per 100 000. The prenatal detection rate increased from 27% to 63%, and terminations increased from 19% to 56%. The odds of having surgery was higher in the late period and higher in the group with prenatal diagnosis. Conclusions We observed a decrease in incidence of live-borns with hypoplastic left heart syndrome aortic atresia. There was in increase in prenatal detection rate and an increase in termination of pregnancy. The proportion of live-borns who underwent surgery increased between time periods.

Awareness through interaction in everyday occupations: experiences of people with Alzheimer's disease2008In: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy, ISSN 1103-8128, E-ISSN 1651-2014, Vol. 15, no 1, p. 43-51Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore and describe the characteristics of awareness of the consequences of having Alzheimer's disease on everyday life occupations. Six community-dwelling participants with Alzheimer's disease were interviewed on repeated occasions about their lived experiences of everyday occupations. A phenomenological method was adopted for the analysis. The findings show that the participants discovered and explored the changes in how they performed everyday occupations in the context of their social relations and through immediate reflections on their forgetfulness. They attempted to handle the changes by adapting their behaviour. Awareness of the changes in their lives was evident in their reflections, as they tried to make sense of what was happening to them. This seemed to be related to an elusive perception of change in situations that they found impossible to influence. The participants reflected on the impact their condition had on other people near them. Their reflections also involved emotional reactions to the shortcomings they experienced. In conclusion, the findings show how these people with Alzheimer's disease were able to express awareness of the consequences of their illness through their reflections on their experiences of interaction with the occupations and the social environment.Read More: http://informahealthcare.com/doi/abs/10.1080/11038120701441080

Meanings and motives for for engagement in self-chosen daily life occupations among individuals with Alzheimer's disease.2005In: OTJR (Thorofare, N.J.), ISSN 1539-4492, E-ISSN 1938-2383, Vol. 25, no 3, p. 89-97Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to uncover and describe the meanings and motives for engagement in self-chosen daily life occupations for elderly individuals with Alzheimer's disease dwelling in the community. Six participants with Alzheimer's disease were included. Data were collected through repeated interviews and observations focusing on their motives for their self-chosen occupational engagement and the significance of the daily occupations. The analysis used a qualitative comparative and interpretative method. The findings show that the participants' occupations supported their ordinary pattern of everyday life and provided them with an opportunity to be in a coherent context. The occupations also allowed them to experience and communicate autonomy and certain characteristics of their identity and provided them with a private sphere. The findings revealed certain crucial but double-edged environmental keys to occupation. By identifying and supporting everyday occupations with personal meaning and value, therapists and caregivers may contribute to the well-being of individuals with Alzheimer's disease living in their own homes.

The vocational situation in cases of memory deficits and younger-onset dementia.2001In: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 15, no 1, p. 34-43Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to describe how persons with memory deficits or younger-onset dementia perceived and met their problems, with particular reference to their present and future vocational situation, including describing the parallel observations and attitudes of other significant persons in the vocational context. Data were collected through 16 interviews, one with each of nine subjects and seven respondents from the subjects' work-places. All interviews were analysed with a comparative method, searching for themes. In addition, subjects' IADL (instrumental activities of daily living) ability and cognition were assessed. The findings demonstrated that the subjects themselves experienced extensive difficulties before their predicament was defined. The difficulties were met by spontaneous and planned strategies on the part of the subjects and by adaptations at the workplaces, but with limited success. The situation also profoundly affected fellow workers. Overall, both the subjects and the work-place respondents had a positive attitude to continued work as long as the subjects made useful contributions. The possibility of remaining in work seemed to depend on multiple factors, including the individual's apprehension of his or her own ability and the length of the sick-leave.

Occupational performance and awareness of disability in mild cognitive impairment or dementia.2011In: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy, ISSN 1103-8128, E-ISSN 1651-2014, Vol. 18, no 2, p. 133-142Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Limited awareness of disabilities is common in mild cognitive impairment and dementia. In order to get a broader base in planning interventions, it is important to consider a person's awareness of his/her disability encountered in performance. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between occupational performance and awareness of disability in older adults with mild cognitive impairment or dementia. Thirty-five older adults were evaluated with the AMPS (Assessment of Motor and Process Skills) and with the AAD (Assessment of Awareness of Disability). Many-faceted Rasch models generated individual measures of ADL performance and awareness of disability. Non-parametric correlation statistics were used to analyse the relationships. The findings showed that there was an overall positive relationship between occupational performance and awareness of disability. However, individual variations in the sample implied that limitations in performance were not equivalent to a limited awareness of disability. In conclusion, awareness of disability should be individually evaluated when planning interventions together with clients and their families.Read More: http://informahealthcare.com/doi/abs/10.3109/11038121003645993

Music Production; from idea to complete record2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This examination paper investigates how the producer assignment works focused on which musical questions that appears and how you make decisions for those. For several years I have tried to convince Kjell Öhman to make a Christmas record, and together we developed the idea of me producing one.

I want to investigate which musical questions will arise in a music production project. Which musical decisions will be made in the process? What controls the decisions? In this report the following questions will be discussed; the genre of music, language, choice of songs, keys, arrangements, instruments and the organisation of songs.

I have read literature about music psychology and musical processes while I have got practical experience by planning and implementing a music production. The result is a Christmas record with some Swedish jazz musicians.

Music psychology could shortly be described as experiences related to music. Music is a living work of art and a communication process is appearing when we are involved with music. Music could be a symbol of emotion because it often symbolises feelings and affects our emotions. The structure of music is important to our emotion experience and there are many factors in music which affects our music experience.

In January 2006 I contacted the contributory and they did all give me positive feedback. I searched for and brought song material while the arrangements were written by Kjell Öhman. We recorded in May 2006 and the musicians were all easy to co - operate with. It is important daring to make decisions when questions come up. This can be a challenge for someone who is a young and inexperienced producer but the communication between me, the sound engineer and the musicians were never a problem.

I decided to make a Christmas record with in the genre of music called jazz, which could be identified as notes combined with improvisation – playing by ear. When deciding which musicians will be a part of the recording project, the contacts matters. Which instruments that will be used, is decided by the arrangements. The American range of Christmas songs decided the question of language and the choice of songs resulted into a mixture of known as well as unknown material. Arrangements were written to all the songs, keys are decided by the register of the instruments. An important establishment is the organisation of in which order the songs will sound on the record.

One question is how much a producer shall let herself/himself be affected by others opinions.  There are thin lines between being sure of an answer and being open for others advice. To dare to stand up for a decision was no hard for me thanks to professional and helpful musicians. It is important to be clear in a leadership, otherwise the leader may not be taken  seriously. The most important question is how you make good and “right” decisions to people that already are professional. I have tried and this is the result, the record we have done is called “Walking in a Winter Wonderland”.

    Abstract [en]

According to everyday experience, fear seems to be part of ideosyncratic contexts, and to take such diverse forms as to defy simple classification. Torgerson (1979) asked subjects to rate their fear of many types of situations, and subjected the ratings to factor analysis. In this way, he isolated five clusters of feared situations: separation fears, social fears, animal fears, mutilation fears, and nature fears. Similar, albeit not identical, factors have been identified in many investigations (see Ohman, Dimberg, & Ost, 1985, for a review).

    Abstract [en]

Participants searched for discrepant fear-relevant pictures (snakes or spiders) in grid-pattern arrays of fear-irrelevant pictures belonging to the same category (flowers or mushrooms) and vice versa. Fear-relevant pictures were found more quickly than fear-irrelevant ones. Fear-relevant, but not fear-irrelevant, search was unaffected by the location of the target in the display and by the number of distractors, which suggests parallel search for fear-relevant targets and serial search for fear-irrelevant targets. Participants specifically fearful of snakes but not spiders (or vice versa) showed facilitated search for the feared objects but did not differ from controls in search for nonfeared fear-relevant or fear-irrelevant, targets. Thus, evolutionary relevant threatening stimuli were effective in capturing attention, and this effect was further facilitated if the stimulus was emotionally provocative.

    Abstract [en]

Schematic threatening, friendly, and neutral faces were used to test the hypothesis that humans preferentially orient their attention toward threat. Using a visual search paradigm, participants searched for discrepant faces in matrices of otherwise identical faces. Across 5 experiments, results consistently showed faster and more accurate detection of threatening than friendly targets. The threat advantage was obvious regardless of whether the conditions favored parallel or serial search (i.e., involved neutral or emotional distractors), and it was valid for inverted faces. Threatening angry faces were more quickly and accurately detected than were other negative faces (sad or "scheming"), which suggests that the threat advantage can be attributed to threat rather than to the negative valence or the uniqueness of the target display.

    Abstract [en]

The role of conscious awareness in human Pavlovian conditioning was examined in 2 experiments using masked fear-relevant (snakes and spiders; Experiments 1 and 2) and fear-irrelevant (flowers and mushrooms; Experiment 1) pictures as conditioned stimuli, a mild electric shock as the unconditioned stimulus, and skin conductance responses as the primary dependent variable. The conditioned stimuli were presented briefly (30 ms) and were effectively masked by an immediately following masking stimulus. Experiment 1 demonstrated nonconscious conditioning to fear-relevant but not to fear-irrelevant stimuli. Even though the participants could not recognize the stimuli in Experiment 2, they differentiated between masked stimuli predicting and not predicting shocks in expectancy ratings. However, expectancy ratings were not related to the conditioned autonomic response.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper we present an evolutionary analysis of attention to stimuli that are threatening from an evolutionary perspective, such as angry faces and snakes. We review data showing that angry, photographically depicted angry faces are more rapidly detected than happy faces in a visual search setting provided that they are male and that distractors are redundant in the sense that they are drawn from a small set of faces. Following Isbell's (2009) novel Snake Detection Theory, we predicted that snakes, as the prototypical predators, should be more rapidly detected than spiders, given that spiders have provided less of a predatory threat for primates. We review a series of experiments from our laboratory showing that snakes indeed are more rapidly detected than spiders provided that the target stimuli are presented in a demanding visual context, such as many distractor stimuli, or in peripheral vision. Furthermore, they are more distracting than spiders on the performance of a primary attention task. Because snakes were not affected by perceptual load, whereas spiders followed the usual rule of better detection with low perceptual load, we concluded that attending to snakes might constitute an evolutionary adaptation.

Opportunities for the Jatuwa community biogas plant: An energy demand survey and a field site examinationMinor Field Study2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As climate change becomes an ever-bigger issue for countries in the south-Himalayan region, policy makers become more aware of the problems associated with increasing temperatures. As countries consume more energy extracted from fossil fuels the climate becomes warmer, affecting ecosystems and increasing the risk of natural disasters. Nepal is one of the countries seeing the effects of global warming from close range and the country is now seriously aiming to develop its energy sector through the implementation of sustainable energies. One of the more successful stories of the Nepali energy sector is the implementation of biogas technology. As of today, more than 350 000 small scale biogas systems for single household use are operating all over Nepal. The Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC), the focal governmental agency for the promotion of sustainable and clean energy, is now aiming to develop the large-scale biogas sector. This would increase the amount of domestic sustainable energy as well as the country’s energy security.

The Shree Krishna Gau Sewa Sadan (SKGSS) is a Hindu trust located in south-eastern Nepal with the purpose of taking in and serving cows. It now aims to become economically self-sufficient by selling biogas and slurry produced from a newly constructed large-scale biogas plant to the nearby community households. The biogas will be produced from cow dung collected on the property and distributed to the households through a gas grid that is yet to be designed and built. The purpose of study was to investigate the opportunities for the trust to successfully operate the biogas plant and was focused on two areas of interest to the AEPC, which is the key sponsor of the community biogas project. The first was to primarily calculate the energy cooking demand of the nearby households, their current cost of cooking and their attitude towards a switch to biogas usage which would assist the planning of the future gas grid. The second was to localize and identify potential areas of improvements within the biogas system and based on that offer suggestions of improvements focused on technical aspects that would help the SKGSS to successfully operate the biogas plant. The study was conducted using a literature study, semi-constructed interviews, household surveys and on-site inspections of the biogas plant.

The household survey showed that the nearby households’ interest in switching to biogas is high. Most of the households also showed to be willing to pay extra money to be connected to the biogas grid. The positive attitude towards biogas partly stems from a raised awareness about climate issues as well as increased security in energy security. The survey also showed that the nearby urban and semi-urban community is not a viable market for the produced slurry. However, Nepal is a big and growing market for organic high value fertilizer so the potential of a successful sale of slurry is still high. The primary calculations show that with the feedstock available, the community biogas plant cannot suffice more than 50 households’ energy demand for cooking. When designing the gas grid, proper calculations based on actual measurements of the biogas system need to be done. This study also recommends various improvements of the biogas system that will help the SKGSS biogas plant to operate successfully.

Barn som väcker funderingar: Att ge känslomässigt stöd till barn i förskola och förskoleklass2018Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Samtliga intervjuer spelades in och antecknades.

Energy efficiency investments in the commercial real estate business: A study of decision drivers on the Swedish market2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The International Energy Agency has stated that it is more sustainable to improve the energy efficiency of already existing buildings than increasing the national energy production to provide inefficient buildings with even more energy, which would result in that an increased amount of resources required to power the existing energy inefficient building stock. Taken into consideration that buildings in Sweden consume about 40% of Sweden’s final energy consumption and count for about 36% of the total greenhouse gas emissions it becomes evident that in order to decrease Sweden’s carbon foot print, it is important to understand real estate investors decision-making process. The aspiration is to provide stakeholders both on a micro and macro level with a better understanding of the real estate investors decision making process. This will enable companies (micro level) in the field to better customize their value propositions and there by enable companies to contribute to decreasing the primary energy consumption of buildings in Sweden. The macro level, referring to governmental institutions, will be provided with a better understanding of what kind of measures can be taken, to increase investments into buildings energy efficiency. It could be found from the literature reviewed for the study that there is a gap in research what comes to the Swedish market. Majority of the existing literature covers bigger markets e.g. the USA and UK but very little or if at all the Swedish market. During the literature study an existing framework on decision drivers for real estate investors was developed. The study uses mixed method consisting of qualitative and quantitative methods to answer the research questions. The study showed that the most prominent drivers on the Swedish market were the customers strategic decisions, environmental and energy certificates, reporting protocols, investment horizon, rental agreements, internal investment policies decreased property costs and building specific characteristics. It was found that the Swedish real estate investors experience very little pressure from the government to increase the energy efficiency of their buildings. It was also found that governmental subsidies are more considered a gamble than an encouragement to invest in energy efficiency due to long processing times and heavy bureaucracy.

Synliggöra språket: Dynamisk självreglerande korrigerande (DSK) återkoppling - en aspekt av lärande bedömning i gymnasieämnet svenska som andraspråk2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The management of water resources and waste water varies between the countries of the EU. For many years, a large part of the water in Europe has been contaminated by, among other things, insufficiently treated waste water and emissions from agriculture. The EU Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC and the Urban Waste Water Directive 91/271/EEC are intended to harmonize fresh-water management and waste water management within the whole EU, aiming at safeguarding drinking water of good quality and a high quality of all water within the EU today and in the future. There are however some problems concerning the waste-water directive. One problem is the huge investment needed in Slovakia to fulfil the demands of the waste-water directive for waste-water management in larger communities (with more than 2000 inhabitants). Many waste-water treatment plants need to be upgraded or built, and in addition a large part of the households in eastern Slovakia are not yet connected to a municipal water-supply and waste-water collecting system (including waste-water treatment). Subsidies from the EU’s structural funds are needed for Slovakia to fulfil the requirements of the waste-water directive. Because this directive only applies to larger communities, smaller communities and private sewage are not affected by the directive and therefore, in general, not eligible for financial funding from EU. Financial funding, however, is needed for addressing inadequate sewage in small communities with poor socioeconomic and municipal financial resources. For water protection to be effective, it is important to take also private sewage emissions into consideration, even though they might appear insignificant. Point emissions from insufficient private sewage (private sewage systems with insufficient waste-water treatment or emission of untreated waste water), primarily in small, tightly clustered communities in Slovakia or for example in Sweden in areas where weekend houses are being converted into permanent dwellings, are potential sources of pollution that can cause health or/and environmental problems. Inadequate private sewage can thus reduce the quality of both surface and ground water and have a negative impact on aquatic ecosystems, which in turn makes it more difficult to reach the quality standards of the Water Framework Directive and its daughter directives. This applies to both Slovakia and Sweden. The private sewage solutions that are recommended today are often satisfactory but not without problems. To give an example, miniature waste water treatment plants are expensive to put in place, require technological knowledge on the part of the property owner and they also require a daily flow of waste water to function properly. Improper handling of the miniature water treatment plant may cause inefficient or no water treatment at all, in some cases the bacterial content of the waste water may increase instead of being reduced. To address the problem concerning private sewage it is important that (1) waste-water solutions are adapted to local circumstances and financial funding are given to economically week municipalities (2) the property owner (owner of the private sewage) regularly controls the quality of the out-going treated wastewater (if it is possible) and (3) that efficient inspections with injunctions (from authorities) are carried out to discover faulty private sewage. Unfortunately financial funding, in general, is not given to small municipalities and/or inappropriate private sewage and inspections, both in Slovakia and Sweden, are generally slow.

Sports Facility Statistics: Overview of built sports facilities and analysis of sports hall costs in Norway2016Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The current statistics on sports facilities suggests that 4 billion NOK (divided on 700 facilities) are planned to be used annually for new sports facility projects and renovation projects of old sports facilities. These statistics are based on planned projects and not on realized projects. In addition, it is not distinguished between new facility projects and facility renovation projects. The current statistics is based on applications for so-called gaming funds, which are all registered in a sports facilities information system. The information system is complicated to use, and the data in the register is not perfect: it is inconsistent and sometimes incorrect or incomplete. This thesis provides an overview of the number of built sports facilities in Norway between 1996 and 2016. Further, it provides cost statistics for sports halls, based on extracted data from the information system, which was preprocessed and then analyzed using regression models and ANOVA. This work shows that, in average, 560 sports facilities have been built each year between 1996 and 2015 (1 000 facilities if one includes so-called local activity facilities). In average 24 sports halls have been built each year, with an average cost of 36 million NOK. Sports halls built in Oslo have in average costed 14 to 23 million NOK more to build than sports halls in the rest of Norway.

    Abstract [en]

Phase variation and expression mechanisms of the sialic acid binding adhesin SabA in Helicobacter pyloriManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Bacterial attachment to host epithelial surfaces by means of bacterial adhesion proteins is a key event in colonization. Phase variation is a mechanism used by bacteria that mediates frequent and reversible gains and losses in expression of proteins. In the inflamed stomach, H. pylori adherence to sialyl Lewis antigens (sLex) is mediated by the sialic acid binding adhesin (SabA). Instability in sLex-binding was previously reported and here we show that this is caused by the high frequency of ON/OFF switching in SabA expression. Our data shows that SabA phase variation is due to slippages in the number of CT repeat sequences in the 5’ end of the sabA gene (i.e. slipped strand mispairing). The sabA operon was defined and the sabA transcriptional start site was determined. Changes in the number of thymine bases present in a mononucleotide stretch upstream of the sabA gene and in close proximity to a -35-like promoter element did not affect the ON/OFF phase variation. Instead, we show that changes in intrinsic DNA properties are likely to influence SabA expression. The effect of growth phase on sLex-binding properties and SabA expression was also analyzed. SabA expression and sLex-binding increased as H. pylori entered late logarithmic phase. Our data show the ability of H. pylori to cycle between an adherent and non-adherent phenotype by phase variation mechanisms and adjustment of receptor binding activity. These data increase our understanding of how H. pylori adjust adherence properties during persistent infection.

Porosity prediction of calcium phosphate cements based on chemical composition2015In: Journal of materials science. Materials in medicine, ISSN 0957-4530, E-ISSN 1573-4838, Vol. 26, no 7, article id 210Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The porosity of calcium phosphate cements has an impact on several important parameters, such as strength, resorbability and bioactivity. A model to predict the porosity for biomedical cements would hence be a useful tool. At the moment such a model only exists for Portland cements. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a first porosity prediction model for calcium phosphate cements. On the basis of chemical reaction, molar weight and density of components, a volume-based model was developed and validated using calcium phosphate cement as model material. 60 mol% beta-tricalcium phosphate and 40 mol% monocalcium phosphate monohydrate were mixed with deionized water, at different liquid-to-powder ratios. Samples were set for 24 h at 37 degrees C and 100 % relative humidity. Thereafter, samples were dried either under vacuum at room temperature for 24 h or in air at 37 degrees C for 7 days. Porosity and phase composition were determined. It was found that the two drying protocols led to the formation of brushite and monetite, respectively. The model was found to predict well the experimental values and also data reported in the literature for apatite cements, as deduced from the small absolute average residual errors (<2.0 %). In conclusion, a theoretical model for porosity prediction was developed and validated for brushite, monetite and apatite cements. The model gives a good estimate of the final porosity and has the potential to be used as a porosity prediction tool in the biomedical cement field.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to assess the perceptions and experiences among pre-school teachers, regarding working with recycling and re-use in their work, related to the science of chemistry in the field of sustainable development, which is included as a goal to aim for in the Lpfö 98 (curriculum) of all preschools. The survey was conducted through a qualitative approach, the choice of method was using semi-structured interviews, to provide as much interview material as possible. The interviews were conducted with six different pre-school teachers from two different pre-schools in a smaller municipality in central Sweden. The questions in the interviews had been constructed to meet the preschool teachers' perceptions and experiences of chemistry, sustainable development and more specifically on the recycling and re-use of different materials, which were used within the educational activities. The results showed several similarities but also differences. All preschool teachers felt comfortable with the concept and meaning of re-use, compared to the other concepts. They were actively working with the re-use of materials, however, they were not only doing this from an environmental or natural point of view, but also in terms of design and working with a creative purpose in the educational activities. All pre-school teachers agreed that they did not work with re-use as much as working out of a perspective of design. However, there was a variety of views on why working with re-use and recycling did not meet the intended expectations of the work in the pre-schools. All pre-school teachers agreed with the fact that the link between sustainable development, recycling and re-use, and the science of chemistry has to become stronger in their work, partly due to the fact that the level of knowledge the children need to achieve by every certain age stated in the curriculum, must be met. All agreed that the process of recycling and re-use should be emphasized more, here the fact was also mentioned that it was a difficult task to work with recycling and re-use, and that this to a great extent depended on their own experiences and their lack of knowledge of the subject.
