Konceptstudie av kombinerad nödgenerator-trädgårdsredskap: Concept Study of a Combined Emergency Generator-Garden tool2005Student paper second termStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present study concerns a concept development of a product idea that Bengt Magnuson, associate professor, had when a heavy storm caused a widespread power failure of long duration. With a basic power-producing unit one should be able to get through a power loss. The product could also be useful for other tasks if different modules are connected, e g grass mower or snow-blower.

According to the product idea the basic unit will be able to produce electric power enough for a fridge, freezer, TV, and a few electric lamps. Normally the basic unit can be used e g as a mower, when such a module is attached. An increased number of tasks would make the contraption useful and tempting for those who do not own an electrical power set in reserve. The study was limited, not involving the construction and characteristics of the power set, as such systems already exist. Power sets will be discussed according to size, weight, and effect to estimate there suitability in the base unit. Also was a consumers investigation not Per-formed, as the study is supposed to produce a basis for such an enquiry.

During the concept development, five ideas were compared in order to reach the best solution. This solution was compared to the alternative solutions which were brought forward at the critical scrutinisation of the product idea.

The result that was reached implied that the product would deflect buyers due to the considerable weight. Even if the weight would be reduced by making the generator unit lighter, two alternative solutions were considered better. One of them would use an alternator and put it on a modified mower with an extra shaft-coupling. The other one would be to add an alternator generator to a system already on the market, where the same motor could be moved between different products.

In conclusion: One should not continue further development of the original product idea but instead use one of the alternative solutions and perform a consumer’s investigation on that one. It is important as a need for an electricity supply in reserve seems to exist for many people outside the central urban areas.

Hammarby sjöstad - Sprickor i den hållbara fasaden?: En studie om hållbar utveckling i miljöprofilsområden2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Analysis and Optimisation of Communication Links for Signal Processing Applications2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There are lots of communication links and standards currently being employed to build systems today. These methods are in many way standardised, but far from everyone of them are. The trick is to select the communication method that best suit your needs. Also there is currently a trend that things have to be cheaper and have shorter time to market. That leads to more Component Off The Shelf (COTS) systems being build using commodity components.

As one part of this work, Gigabit Ethernet is evaluated as a COTS-solution to building large, high-end systems. The computers used are running Windows and the protocol used over Ethernet will be both TCP and UDP. In this work an attempt is also made to evaluate one of the non-standard protocols, the Link Port protocol for the TigerSHARC 20X-series, which is a narrow-bus, doubledata- rate protocol, able to provide multi-gigabit-per-second performance.

The studies have shown lots of interesting things, e.g. that using a standard desktop computer and network card, the theoretical throughput of TCP over Gigabit Ethernet can almost be met, reaching well over 900 Mbps. UDP performance gives on the other hand birth to a series of new questions about how to achieve good performance in a Windows environment, since it is constantly outperformed by the TCP connections.

For the Link Port assessment a custom built IP block is made that is able to support the protocol in full speed, using a Xilinx Virtex 6 FPGA. The IP block is verified through simulation against a model of the Link Port protocol. It is also shown that the transmitter of the IP block is able to send successfully to the receiver IP block. The IP block that is created, is evaluated against some competing multi-gigabit protocols to show it in comparison, and it is a rather small IP block, capable of handling all transactions on the bus as long as data is provided by its host.

Insourcing after outsourcing, A study of the opportunities and challenges in the insourcing process2017Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Outsourcing has been a common topic in relation to business strategy for many decades. It is when an organization transfer some activities to an external vendor. In order to achieve a competitive advantage organizations use external vendors to perform the activities more efficiently and effectively. The global competitive environment has increased the use of outsourcing worldwide, concequently the use of outsourcing has changed the boundaries of todays firms. Lately, backsourcing has gained more attention, which is when an organization has outsourced an activity that was previously executed in house, and then bring it back into the organization again. Insourcing on the other hand, has been given less attention. It is when an outsourced activity that has not been executed within the organization previously, is internalized. The reason for choosing this research topic was that we wanted to write about something that could be applied to the “real world” and the decisions that business leaders face in their occupation. Therefore, when we were offered the chance to write our degree project for Alfa Sweden we accepted their proposal.

We identified two main research gaps in the existing research regarding insourcing, there is no study that covers the insourcing process and the steps inherent in it. Additionally, how the organization’s capabilities are linked to the opportunities and challenges organizations face during insourcing, has not been examined before. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to build a model of the insourcing process and the steps included in each phase of the process. Additionally, to explore the opportunities and challenges that can arise when organizations go through the insourcing process. These opportunities and challenges will be connected to the company’s capabilities, meaning its resources and competences.

In order to fulfill this purpose and gain a deeper understanding of this relatively unexplored field, a qualitative study was conducted. Eight semi-structured interviews were pursued where seven interviewees represented different companies belonging to the same group and one interviewee represented the perspective of an accountant firm.

From the results of the interviews, we derived four themes, namely design of the sourcing solution, the insourcing process, resources and competences. Through analyzing the results of our study we have been able to create a model for what the insourcing process looks like and the steps included in the planning, implementation and control phase. This model can contribute and guide companies who are planning to insource certain activities in the future. Furthermore, our results revealed several opportunities and challenges and their connection to the company’s resources and competences. In addition to these theoretical contributions and practical implications we also provide practical recommendations for Alfa Sweden.

A metaheuristic for vehicle routing problems based on reinforcement learning2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The vehicle routing problem is an old and well-studied problem that arise in last mile logistics. The rapid increase of e-commerce, in particular with an increasing the demand for time scheduled home deliveries on the customer’s terms, is making the problem ever more relevant. By minimizing the cost and environmental impact, we have the setting for mathematical problem called the vehicle routing problem with time windows.

Since the problem is NP-Hard, heuristic methods are often used. In practice, they work very well and typically offer a good tradeoff between speed and quality. However, since the heuristics are often tailormade to fit the needs of the underlying problem, no known algorithm dominates the other on all problems.

One way to overcome the need for specialization is to produce heuristics that are adaptive. In this thesis, an offline learning method is proposed to generate an adaptive heuristic using local search heuristics and reinforcement learning.

The reinforcement learning agents explored in this thesis are situated in both discrete and continuous state representations. Common to all state spaces are that they are inspired by human-crafted reference models where the last action and the result of that action define the state. Four different reinforcement learning models are evaluated in the various environments.

By evaluating the models on a subset of the Solomon benchmark instances, we find that all models but one improve upon a random baseline. The average learner from each of the successful models was slightly worse than the human crafted baseline. However, the best among the generated models was an actor-critic based model which outperformed the best human baseline model.

Due to the scalar objective function, the results are not directly comparable to the Solomon benchmark results with hierarchal objectives. None the less, the results are encouraging as a proof of principle with results in line with the human crafted baseline. The results indicate two clear paths for further work. First, applying the formulation to more complex environments with more actions and more powerful state spaces. Secondly, investigate models based on stochastic policies and recurrent neural networks to cope with the inherently partially observed environment.

Factorisation of Latent Variables in Word Space Models: Studying redistribution of weight on latent variables2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The ultimate goal of any DSM is a scalable and accurate representation of lexical semantics.

Recent developments due to Bullinaria & Levy (2012) and Caron (2001) indicate that the accuracy of such models can be improved by redistribution of weight on the principal components. However, this method is poorly understood and barely replicated due to the computational expensive dimension reduction and the puzzling nature of the results. This thesis aims to explore the nature of these results. Beginning by reproducing the results in Bullinaria & Levy (2012) we move onto deepen the understanding of these results, quantitatively as well as qualitatively, using various forms of the BLESS test and juxtapose these with previous results.

The main result of this thesis is the verification of the 100% score on the TOEFL test and 91.5% on a paradigmatic version of the BLESS test. Our qualitative tests indicate that the redistribution of weight away from the first principal components is slightly different between word categories and hence the improvement in the TOEFL and BLESS results. While we do not find any significant relation between word frequencies and weight distribution, we find an empirical relation for the optimal weight distribution.

Based on these results, we suggest a range of further studies to better understand these phenomena.

    Abstract [en]

Objective: To establish a statistical model for determination of protamine dose in conjunction with cardiopulmonary bypass. Design: Prospective.

    Setting: University hospital.

Participants: Ninety consecutive cardiac surgical patients.

    Interventions: None.

Measurements and Main Results: A series of clinically oriented variables were introduced into a statistical model for projection of the protamine dose after cardiopulmonary bypass. The following significant predictors were identified using multivariable regression analysis: The patient's body surface area, the administered dose of heparin, heparin clearance, and the preoperative platelet count. The statistical model projected the protamine dose within 3 +/- 23 mg of the point-of-care test used as reference.

Conclusion: Protamine dosing based on statistical modeling represents an alternative to point-of-care tests.

    Abstract [en]

Title: Experiences of stigma in health care among people affected by HIV- A literature review Background: HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) has been associated with stigmatization for a long time because of ignorance and uncertainty still exists regarding the transmission routes and infectivity. Aim: The aim for the study was to highlight experiences of stigma in health care among people affected by HIV. Method: A literature study was conducted with ten qualitative articles from eight different countries. The articles were examined, analyzed and compiled. Results: The result generated two categories and five subcategories. The categories are: To be treated with a lack of care actions and experiences of integrity violation. The sub-categories are: excessive security measures, ignorant attitudes, lack of secrecy, offensive body language and abusive verbal communication.                                                                   Conclusion: Lack of knowledge about HIV can be seen internationally seen as a contributing factor to the patients still experiencing varying stigmatized treatment by health professionals. To counteract the stigma requires research that can generate knowledge on how health professionals can provide better treatment and that this information is disseminated to the medical staff. Keywords: HIV, stigmatization, patient-experience, discrimination.

Professional caregivers’ experiences of caring for women with breast cancer on a surgical ward2004Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of the thesis was to describe caregivers’ experiences of caring for women with breast cancer on a surgical ward. The study was based on interviews with narrative parts and tape-recorded clinical supervision sessions. The interviews and clinical supervision sessions were transcribed verbatim, and analysed by content analysis.

Nurses (n=10) described life for women with breast cancer as either having freedom or not having freedom, with both physical and existential suffering. Dying occurred either naturally in patients’ own home or unnaturally in hospital. The nurses felt that it is possible to alleviate suffering during dying through providing adequate pain relief but also, through listening, providing information and changing the caring atmosphere (I).

Breast cancer as an illness was described from a dark point of view by caregivers (n=37). The descriptions focused on loss of breasts and control, progression of the illness and annihilation. The illness seemed, in the caregivers’ mind, to often end with a painful death. Caregivers who had the opportunity to follow the total care process described a lighter viewpoint (II).

According to nurses (=31) the most important needs among women, their relatives and nurses themselves were the needs to talk and receive information. There was a discrepancy between what was described as important needs and the descriptions of how these needs were provided for. Nurses, whose own needs for support were sometimes unsatisfactorily met (III), seemed almost to be unaware of the needs among women and their relatives.

In the clinical supervision sessions caregivers reflected on difficult care situations related to women’s, relatives’, and most often caregivers’ feelings (n=38). The care situations were described as evoking feelings of discomfort, powerlessness and reduced self-esteem. These feelings were described by caregivers as arising in connection with caring for especially women with advanced breast cancer in a changing organisation (IV).

Caregivers’ descriptions of caring for women with breast cancer show a lot of negative experiences of powerlessness and frustration. They met women and their relatives who suffered in various ways and had considerable need for support. Caregivers often found themselves unable to meet these needs due to organisational obstacles e.g. lack of time and lack of knowledge about other caregivers’ responsibility in the care.

    Abstract [en]

Caring for women with breast cancer has potential for increasing care giver distress and anxiety. Knowledge of the threats implicit in the disease and treatment as well as overidentification with the patient form the basis for this outcome. In order to describe perceptions of breast cancer as an illness, semistructured interviews were carried out with 37 care givers at a surgical department. The interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim. An analysis was then carried out of the stories told by the care givers about breast cancer as an illness. The results indicated that breast cancer as an illness gave rise to predominantly negative and dark associations among the care givers. Their experiences of caring for women in critical stages of the illness over many years appear to have had a negative influence on them. Death itself, and even more so the process leading to the end, were very tangible in their stories. The article concludes that care givers on a surgical ward have a fragmented picture of the patients and need to be given opportunities to follow the total care process. Those care givers who were able to follow the women's stages of illness throughout more often had a positive picture.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to describe the content of caregivers' (health care professionals') presentation of care situations as told at supervision sessions. For 1 year, 21 caregivers in a surgical ward of a county hospital in the middle of Sweden participated in a clinical supervision session 2 hours every third week. The participants in the supervision sessions were divided so as to form three mixed groups composed of registered nurses, practical nurses, physiotherapists, and physicians. The purpose of the supervision sessions was to give caregivers the opportunity to reflect on different care situations in a way that contributed to the development of patient care. The 38 supervision sessions were tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim. The transcripts were analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. The caregivers described difficult care situations focusing on the feelings of patients, relatives, and caregivers, with an emphasis on the caregivers' being dominant. Difficult care situations were described as giving caregivers feelings of discomfort, powerlessness, and reduced self-esteem. These feelings were described as arising in connection with caring for women with advanced breast cancer and other seriously ill patients in an organization lacking clear goals and rules. This study found that supervision sessions offering an opportunity to reflect on the difficult care situations are important for caregivers. These sessions seem therefore to be of vital importance for the future development of cancer care on the surgical ward.

    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: In Sweden women with newly diagnosed breast cancer are admitted to surgical wards in order to undergo surgery and receive postoperative care. On these wards, nursing staff take care of women both with newly diagnosed breast cancer and those with cancer in advanced stages. Nurses have to meet the varying needs of patients and their relatives. AIM: To describe nurses' opinions of the need for care and support for women and their relatives in connection with surgery for breast cancer, as well as their own need for support on a surgical ward. METHODS: Thirty-one nurses from a surgical ward participated in semi-structured interviews. The interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Thereafter a step-by-step, qualitative content analysis was carried out. RESULTS: The nurses described the need to talk and receive information as being the most important among women and their relatives, as well as among themselves. Only a few nurses mentioned the need for physical care among the women. Contact with relatives was described as being almost nonexistent. There was a discrepancy between what nurses described as important needs and how these needs were provided for. CONCLUSION: This study shows that what the nurses described as being the most important needs, and the way how these needs were provided for, was more often seen from a theoretical point of view with few examples of self-experienced situations in the daily care. Needs among women and their relatives seemed to be not fully known to nurses and therefore, possibly, were not met. Nurses themselves had a pronounced need for support, which was sometimes unsatisfactorily met.
