    Abstract [sv]

    Syftet med studien är att belysa några behandlares uppfattningar om faktorer som motverkar negativ ungdomskultur på institutioner för ungdomar med sociala problem. Studien lyfter fram upplevelser samt erfarenheter därmed användes ett kvalitativt närmandesätt, med hermeneutisk utgångspunkt. Fem semistrukturerade intervjuer tillämpades vid insamlingen av mjukdata. Med hjälp av latent innehållsanalys analyserades materialet för bättre överblick.

    Resultatet belyser faktorer som bidrar till att det blir negativt bland ungdomar på institutioner. Dessa faktorer kan exempelvis vara att ungdomarna inte känner av personalens närvaro, blir sedda samt hörda. Resultatet lyfter även fram att ungdomarna Influeras av varandra och är lojala mot varandra för att ungdomarna upplever att de har samma historik eller gemensamma drag samt att ungdomarna upplever att personal är på institutionen för att enbart tjäna pengar. Omotiverade ungdomar ska inte sättas inom samma grupp för då blir rehabiliteringsarbetet lidande konstateras i resultatet. Respondenterna upplever att oenighet bland personal angående rutiner och regler bidrar till negativ ungdomskultur. Delaktiga ungdomar som får stöd, som motiveras och förstärks av behandlare samt får återanknytning till sociala sammanhang i form av föreningsliv kan bidra till att främja en positiv ungdomskultur.

    Abstract [en]

    ABSTRACT

    Background: Most cases of lumbar disc herniation are asymptomatic. When symptomatic, LDH may cause a significant physical and mental distress. Initially, most patients are treated conservative but sometimes operations may be required.

    Aim: The aim of this study was to provide a review of the scientific basis of physiotherapy, including behavioural therapy, as a treatment to lumbar disc herniation regarding pain, function and the size of disc herniation in people suffering from lumbar disc herniation.

    Method: Four databases were used in the searches of literature. Assessment of the validity of the studies was done with the PEDro-scale and valuation of evidence rate was made according to guidelines made by the Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment (SBU).

    Result: Nine RCT-studies were included with a total of 713 participants. The scientific basis is moderate to support a pain reduction and limited regarding improvement of physical function when it comes to physical exercises, including MDT. There is also a limited scientific basis supporting a reduction of pain from manipulation. Laser, on the other hand, showed a limited scientific basis to have no effect on pain. Traction and acupuncture had an insufficient scientific basis. Overall there were an insufficient scientific basis on the size of disc herniation.There was no study found examining the efficacy on behavioural therapy.

    Conclusion: The scientific basis is moderate to support a pain reduction when it comes to physical exercises, including MDT. There were few studies of high evidential rate and the scientific basis is difficult to determine due to heterogeneous studies. Additional science is required to determine which physiotherapy methods are the most effective for patients with lumbar disc herniation.

    Abstract [en]

    In this thesis, the main objective was to access improvement suggestions that will allow the SKA International Group to produce smoothed throughput at Mogadishu's airport. SKA International Group is a logistics company which took over responsibility at the airport three years ago. The company’s mission was to build the airport, and make it one of the best in the region. After three years, air traffic at the airport has increased significantly, which meant that the baggage handling became a major problem. The company has not applied for a newer and more modern equipment to cope with the pressure of the baggage that increases in number with each passing day. The work consisted of a theoretical part with a literature study based on contemporary research and also a qualitative study by interviewing a number of people at the company. There is also a survey of the company's process flow using a tool called value stream mapping. With the help of the analysis, it identified what is value-adding and non-value adding time for baggage handling. The analysis identified also areas for improvement that were critical in order to reduce the lead time. At the end of this project, it mentions a number of suggestions for improvement that can create the conditions for a successful change for the better. One of the main improvement suggestions there is how the company can achieve lead time reduction at the airport

    BIM stands for Building Information Modeling. This means that you have a common buildingmodel that contains information relevant to all members of the building process . Thedifference between a 3D and BIM model is in addition to visualization that you have access tomore dimensions such as time and cost. This leads to greater clarity for all members during abuilding's life cycle. IFC for mat is a neutral file format that facilitates information exchangebetween different BIM tools. IFC format has been developed by the construction industry andis not owned by any supplier.

    VDC, which stands for Virtual Design Construction, is NCC's way ofworking on projectslinked to BIM. VDC provides the opportunity to provide the user with updated information tounderstand the customer's wishes and how to impleme nt it. A part of this work includesinvestigating new methods of quantity takeoff and comparing them.

    The purpose of the thesis work was to compare 4 different methods ofquantity takeoff basedon time and quality. The 4 different methods were Vico Office, Solibri, Bluebeam and thetraditional quantity takeoff by hand (manual) manual). The quantity take off was limited only to theamount of non bearing inner walls in the project.

    Vico Office, Solibri, Bluebeam andquantity takeoff by hand are the 4 methods reviewed. Thebasis for the quantity take off has been an IFC file and 2D drawings. From the IFC file, takeoffwas made in Vico Office and Solibri. The 2D drawings were used to obtain quantities fromBluebeam and by hand. The quantity take off results in a comparison of the quantities that wasreceived . Summary of quantities has been carried out in Excel.

    Thequantities has been collected from Kvarteret Pedagogen which is a new construction ofmulti family houses in Karslundsskogen . It consists of 3 houses with 55 apartments on 5floors. Building start was 2015 an d today the project is complete.

    The result showed significant differences between the four meth ods. The results showed thatSolibri Model Checker is the software that is best suited for quantity takeoff when consideringtime and quantity. It was also the most user friendly of the 4 methods.

    Abstract [en]

    Context: In recent years, more and more people have started showing an increasing interest in distance or web-based education. Some of the reasons for this are the improvement in information and communication technology, as well as advancement in computer networking infrastructures. However, although computer technology has played an important role for the development of distance learning management systems, the underlying goal of such systems is the delivery of competitive and qualitative education via the distance learning environment. There have been a number of research studies and investigations in the field of Computer supported collaborative learning. This particular study is focused on the challenges associated with task execution in a distance learning environment as perceived by graduate students at a university.

    Objectives: The main focus or rationale behind this study is to investigate the importance of computer mediated communication tools in a virtual learning environment, as well as the problems facing the teachers or facilitators in their attempt to help learners (students) in the process of task execution, and towards achieving the learning goals in a web-based learning system.

    Methods: The author has adopted a qualitative case study approach. Questionnaires were sent out to some of the graduate students of BTH that participated in the online course under investigation, “Work integrated e-learning”, and some of these students were interviewed as well. Interviews were also conducted with two professors of Informatics and active researchers in distributed or e-learning in a University in Sweden that has had many years of experience in providing distance learning education. The empirical material was then analyzed, using cultural historical activity theory (CHAT) as a theoretical framework

    Results: The results indicate that more communication and collaborative interaction is needed in the context of the studied e-learning management system. The students expected the provision of more video communication through the learning platform. Furthermore, the results show that the learning in the studied web-based environment is centered on the students. 

    Conclusions: The author concludes that in order to diminish the gap that exists between face-to-face learning/teaching and an e-learning environment, there is a need for the designers and facilitators of the e-learning management system to make this platform more interactive. Additionally, the author concludes that the concept of Open start free pace (OSFP) or strict deadlines may need to be introduced into distance learning education in order to solve the challenges facing the teachers and facilitators.

    There have been remarkable growths in wireless communication networks in

    recent years; this is because of its merits over the wired networks such as

    Mobility and convenience. Wireless networks transmit the signal over the

    open air via radio waves of different frequencies, this makes it to be

    vulnerable to several attacks and anybody on the street can easily intercept the

    wireless data or inject new data into the entire network. There has been

    existence of wired equivalent privacy (WEP) protocol (IEEE 802.11i), which

    was designed for wireless network security. There were concerns of security

    vulnerabilities in WEP; this made it necessary for the implementation of

    another solution to overcome the weaknesses of the previous wireless

    network security. The IEEE 802.1X (port-based network admission control)

    which is defined on Extensible Authentication protocol (EAP) provides

    effective and efficient admission control to wireless and other networks

    devices [8].

    Our thesis investigates the efficiency of NAC (IEEE 802.1X) as a security

    solution, access different vendor solutions, protocols supported and look into

    the inter-operability of these various vendors. In as much as we support the

    premise of NAC being an excellent solution, we will also make brilliant

    recommendations in this thesis to be considered for future refinements of this

    security solution as well as deployment scenarios for the university network.

    Abstract [en]

    A new assessment criterion for docking poses is proposed in which experimental electron density is taken into account when evaluating the ability of docking programs to reproduce experimentally observed binding modes. Three docking programs (Gold, Glide, and Fred) were used to generate poses for a set of 88 protein-ligand complexes for which the crystal structure is known. The new criterion is based on the real space R-factor (RSR), which measures how well a group of atoms-in our case the ligand-fits the experimental electron density by comparing that density to the expected density, calculated from the model (i.e., the predicted ligand pose). The RSR-based measure is compared to the traditional criterion, the root-mean-square distance (RMSD) between the docking pose and the binding configuration in the crystallographic model. The results highlight several shortcomings of the RMSD criterion that do not affect the RSR-based measure. Examples illustrate that the RSR-derived approach allows a more meaningful a posteriori assessment of docking methods and results. Practical implications for docking evaluations and for methodological development work in this field are discussed.

    The factors behind the success of Swedish entrepreneurs: A quantitative approach of Swedish entrepreneurs, with an international comparison of the years 1800-2012.2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    The entrepreneur as an economic agent is highlighted as being important by several researchers, mainly through their contribution to innovation and economic development. Yet there is no universal definition of what is characterized as being an entrepreneur. The elements affecting success of entrepreneurs has previously not been outlined extensively, the aim of this study is therefore to determine the factors of entrepreneurial success in Sweden. This is made possible by adopting a statistical prosopography and reproducing the method used by Nuvolari, Toninelli & Vasta (2015). The method involves collecting qualitative information found in the Dictionary of Swedish National Biography and from a list of the most prominent entrepreneurs in Sweden, published by the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet. The qualitative information is then rewritten into quantitative data, which enables the use of factor analysis along with ordinary least square regressions. The standardized research allows for comparison of other studies involving entrepreneurs active in different countries. In addition, the model is expanded using a cluster analysis, allowing for identifying structures and patterns within the sample of entrepreneurs.

    The study concludes that entrepreneurial success appears to be a multi-dimensional phenomenon, also shown in other case studies adopting similar method. The level of innovation intensity proves to enhance success of all dimensions. While an entrepreneur’s educational level is shown to have a positive relationship with the economic success, it appeared to be negatively related to the aspect of social mobility. Moreover, involvement in politics is also shown to have a negative impact on economic success. Finally, the cluster analysis proved the existence of six different types of entrepreneurs within the sample.

    The study aims to gain a better understanding and explore how a selected group (receivers) perceive two elected advertising images from Indiska and Vila and then compare their opinions to what Indiska and Vila themselves want to communicate. We base the study on theories of encoding / decoding, which deals with how the companies charge their advertising images with values and how recipients decodes these values.

    A qualitative study was carried out based on analytical induction (planning, collection and analysis). Through the analytical method of induction, we created categories based on the collected data and put them in relation to each other. The result showed that the overall impression of the images' and the context are of great importance for how our respondents perceive the advertising images. The overall impressions convey emotion that reinforces the expression and the message. The respondents partially perceived the transmitters' message in the pictures, but some elements did not match the transmitters' intention.

    We also made a reception analysis to find out whether the nursery place of our respondents made a difference in how they interpreted the advertising images. Although we could not reveal any significant difference between these groups, we still believe that social, cultural and economic background matters when it comes to interpretation.

    The use of direct mould concrete as material for the surfacing on bridges is an increasingly used coating option. But in order to implement this option at a larger scale, a change in the formula according to “bridge code 2004 part 62.323” for direct mould concrete has to be made. This is because the present formula gives too high volumes of steel fiber. Thus this report will be a part of improving the said formula.In this report the author makes an inventory in which, among others things, the amount of bridges that have been directly molded with concrete as surfacing. The inventory shows in what intervals in both runway length and the area of the surface that is direct moulded as well as where and when these bridges were built. There is also an inventory made of what kind of damage these bridges have been suffering. This is then presented in graphical format in order to get a grip on its scope.Another part of the research made in this report is to study the temperature and relative humidity’s effects on concrete shrinkage. This is done to simulate the concrete moulding in different seasons and locations in the country.The goal is to acquire an understanding on the extent of direct mould concrete usage in Sweden, as well as to find a favorable moulding-environment. If the shrinkage process is slow the grip between the main concrete construction and the surface coating is better, which in turn results into a smaller amount of required steel fibers in the concrete. It also leads to easier processing when moulding, and minimizes the surface roughness of the bridge way.

    Denna uppsats ämnar att undersöka de kommunikativa processer för blockedjeteknologi startups som ska lansera en så kallad “initial coin offering” och således mynta sin egna kryptovaluta, såsom till exempel bitcoin. Vi avser att undersöka det strategiska kommunikation processerna detta involverar.

    Från ena perspektivet är ett decentraliserat blockkedjesystem högt värderat på grund av det faktum att det jämställer samtliga medverkande och på så vis skapar en “perfekt demokrati”, å andra sidan argumenterar många att centralisering behövs för att bibehålla tillit. Tillit till organisationer skapas genom vetandet att det finns konsekvenser till dess handlingar som kan införas av högre auktoriteter ifall dessa handlingar faller utanför ramarna av vad som anses accepterat (De Fillipe & Wright, 2015). Utan en högre auktoritet som kan implementera detta blir tillit svårare att upprätthålla. Dock verkar blockkedjeteknologi motbevisa detta koncept. Hur är det möjligt för organisationer utan någon reglering från centrala myndigheter att skapa legitimitet och tillit för att på så sätt kunna få investeringar? Resultaten vi fann ställdes i jämförelse sig till våra tre legitimitets teorier som var kognitiv legitimitet, moral legitimitet och pragmatisk legitimitet, samt centrala teman och nyckelord. Att etablera en levande närvaro på sociala medier som till exempel Twitter, LinkedIn och framför allt Telegram grupper var mycket relevant. I telegram grupper sågs en grupp med många aktiva medlemmar och snabb svarsfrekvens från organisationen som mycket betydelsefullt, samt att ha botar som städar upp irrelevant material utan att deltagarna upplever detta som automatiserat och genuint. Att delta på event och etablera relationer med andra individer inom området och även närliggande områden som till exempel banksektorn var centralt, målet med detta var i många fall att kunna få betydelsefulla individer i sin styrelse av rådgivare vilket ökar legitimiteten. Att kunna ställa organisationens implementering av decentraliserad blockkedjeteknologi i jämförelse med den nuvarande centraliserade lösningen var essentiellt för att locka investerare som var villiga att riskera kapital för en ny modernare lösning.

    Abstract

    This study aimed to investigate the applicability of three different information theoretic similarity measures in image matching, mutual information (MI), cross-cumulative residual entropy (CCRE) and sum of conditional variances (SCV). An experiment was conducted to assess the impact on the performances of the similarity measures when dealing with multimodality, in this case in the context of infrared and visible light. This was achieved by running simulations of four different scenarios using images taken in infrared and visible light, and additionally with variations in amount of details to create different experimental setups. Namely experimental setup A: unimodal data sets with more and less details and experimental setup B: multimodal datasets with more and less details.

    The result showed that the concept of multimodality gives a statistically significant effect on the performances of all similarity measures. Observations were made that the similarity measures performances also, when trying to match images with different amount of details, differed from each other. This provided a basis for judgement on what measure to use as to give as clear and sound results as possible depending on the variation of detail amount in the data. With this study, it was concluded that the similarity measure CCRE gave the most clear and sound results in the context of multimodality concerning infrared and visible light for both cases of more or less details. Even though the other similarity measures performed well in some cases, CCRE would be to recommend as observed by this study.

    Abstract [en]

    During heart surgeries it is necessary to direct the blood away from the heart and connect the patient to an extra corporeal circulation (ECC) with an associated reservoir (cardiotomy-reservoir). In the open wound a continuous flow of carbon dioxide is insufflated. This is to de-air the wound so that no air enters the heart and large vessels during surgery. An exchange of gases occurs between the tissue of the wound and the applied carbon dioxide. Throughout the surgery the wound will bleed and that blood will be evacuated in to the cardiotomy-reservoir. This can increase the total carbon dioxide level of the patient.

    The subject that was studied in this report was how to decrease the carbon dioxide levels in the blood. The method used was to fill the cardiotomy-reservoir with chosen volumes of water and simultaneously insufflate carbon dioxide and air. This was to measure the effectiveness of the evacuation of carbon dioxide. The results were that, despite water levels and carbon dioxide supply, one was able to ventilate the reservoir. The conclusion is that the higher air supply that is used the better ventilation will be achieved.

    Fokus i denna antologi kommer att ligga på individens engagemang inom fyra olika organisationer i en mellanstor stad i Sverige. Vi kommer att undersöka drivkraften bakom individernas engagemang. Ämnet för denna antologi har vi valt på grund av att vi besitter en fascination för den drivkraft som engagerade individer tycks besitta. Våra gemensamma teoretiska utgångspunkter rör identitetsprocesser och socialt kapital. För att samla empiri har vi använt oss av kvalitativa intervjuer samt observationer. Vårt material har transkriberats, kodats och analyserats i enlighet med Grundad Teori. Vi inleder med en gemensam introduktion kring syftet och övergripande tillvägagångssätt. Thirése Berg inleder med den första av tre studier med Det ideella engagemanget ger livet ett nytt innehåll för både samhället, frivilligarbetaren och dem insatsen avser där hon undersöker varför hennes informanter valt att engagera sig inom BRIS. I den andra studien ”Jag älskar att få folk att trivas tillsammans – Engagemang inom Norrköpings Kulturhus undersöker Natalie Bertling varför individer väljer att söka sig och engagera sig inom Norrköpings Kulturhus. Kadir Yusuf avslutar studien med ”Jag vill få andra att må bra” – Frivilligarbetares syn på sitt engagemang. Han undersöker den bakomliggande tanken med individers frivilliga engagemang i två organisationer som båda syftar till att hjälpa individer i olika livsfaser på olika sätt. Vi sammanfattar antologin med att jämföra våra resultat från våra individuella delar.

    SAMMANFATTNING

    När Sovjet lämnade Baltikum återfick samtliga länder sin suveränitet. Men i Estland och Lettland uppkom frågan vad man skulle göra med alla inflyttade ryssar som blev kvar i länderna efter Sovjets upplösning. Båda länderna återskapade sina gamla medborgarskapslagar för att klargöra vilka som var deras medborgare. Många av de ryssar som inte fick medborgarskap automatiskt fick till slut status som ”icke-medborgare”. Syftet med uppsatsen var att undersöka om Estlands och Lettlands lagar överensstämmer med internationell rätt när det gäller baltryssarnas status, möjlighet till medborgarskap, rättigheter samt skydd mot diskriminering.

    I internationella termer skulle ”icke-medborgare” endast kunna klassas som statslösa. I inhemsk lag innebär ”icke-medborgare” att de har något bättre rättigheter än t.ex. statslösa och flyktingar men att de har det sämre än vanliga medborgare då de saknar vissa medborgerliga rättigheter.

    Enligt internationell rätt är rätten till medborgarskap en mänsklig rättighet. Men statens suveränitet och statens rätt att själv välja sina egna medborgare är starkare än individens rätt till medborgarskap. Därför bröt inte Estland och Lettland mot internationella regler när de inte gav ”icke-medborgarna” medborgarskap automatiskt efter självständigheten. Länderna har dock efter internationell press infört lagar som gör att barn som föds i länderna har rätt till medborgarskap. Ryssarna har möjlighet i båda länderna att naturaliseras för att kunna få medborgarskap. Till en början var naturaliseringskraven väldigt tuffa, men lättades något när Estland och Lettland fick internationell kritik. Fortfarande finns det många ”icke-medborgare” kvar eftersom naturalisationskraven för många upplevs som svåra och förnedrande.

    Ryssarna i Estland och Lettland kan inte anses vara utsatta för systematisk diskriminering men många bestämmelser och lagar har en diskriminerande effekt. ”Icke-medborgarna” saknar rätten att söka vissa jobb, då de endast är reserverade för medborgare. Dessutom har många yrken språkkrav. Under Sovjettiden försvagades estniskan och lettiskan till förmån för det ryska språket. Båda länderna har därför haft behov av att stärka sina inhemska språk och skapat språklagar som har diskriminerande effekt för den ryska minoritetsgruppen och det har också bidragit till segregationen som existerar i hög grad i både Estland och Lettland.

    Background: Patients participation is important for good care and treatment. One of the nurses' statutory responsibilities in their profession is to enable patients to participate in their own care. Previous research shows how patients experience participation in health care. Participation can promote recovery and lead to increased motivation for treatment in patients. Aim: To describe nurses experiences of patients participation in health care. Method: A systematic literature study based on ten qualitative scientific articles with qualitative approaches, analyzed according to Evans descriptive synthesis.

    Result: Nurses experiences presented in the results were divided into two different themes. The first theme identified was: the prerequisites for the creation of the patients participation and consists of three subthemes: creating a good caring relationship, the importance of information for patients participation and the importance of shared decision making. The second theme was: Obstacles for the creation of the patients participation and consists of three subtemes: Inadequate working environment, nurse's approach and circumstances that affect patients participation. Conclusion: Patients participation depends on both nurses efforts and patients willingness to participate. By highlighting nurses experiences of patient participation, can professionals as well as future nurses gain more knowledge, understanding and better conditions to increase patients participation.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose with this study aims to identify the most important and critical factors for small-sized companies to make way for a successful transition to ISO 9001:2015. Because of the new structure, it is difficult for companies to interpret the standard and what is required to achieve a certification. This study has therefore been carried out at the manufacturing company FIG Metall in Gnosjö. 

    The study is based on qualitative research. Observation, interviews and document views were made at FIG Metall. Interviews were also carried out with the auditing company Qvalify and the Swedish Standards Institute to receive their views on which the important factors are as well as the general difficulties for companies when transitioning.  The interviews were semi-structured which resulted in an open discussion where the respondents were free to answer based on how they perceived the questions.

    The results of the empirical data were the basis of the analysis and the conclusion. The different methods used in the report can be seen in figure 10 which shows the triangular approach of the study. Qvalify and SIS agreed upon the same areas companies need to focus on when transitioning to ISO 9001:2015.

    The result of this study shows that the most important areas smaller companies need to focus on when transitioning are Leadership, Context of the organization, Risk based thinking and Process approach. The study concluded that ISO 9001:2015 is closely related to total quality management (TQM), organizational development and organizational psychology and can be used as complementary tools to the standard.

    Abstract [en]

    The regression of the ECG signs of myocardial infarction has been studied in 101 patients. A significant increase in R wave amplitude and decrease in Q wave depth on the standard ECG was observed over three months. In 21% of the patients, Q waves disappeared completely. In inferior infarction, these changes were more apparent in the lateral V leads than in the inferior limb leads. Patients with intraventricular conduction defects were excluded. Two factors associated with the Q and R wave changes have been identified. Lower heart rates appeared to facilitate the recovery of R waves, and smaller infarcts, as assessed by peak LDH, showed greater ECG recovery. This study raises the interesting possibility that modification of the heart rate may affect favourably the healing process after an acute myocardial infarction.

    Abstract [en]

    BACKGROUND Elevated blood pressure and elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Lowering both should reduce the risk of cardiovascular events substantially.

    METHODS In a trial with 2-by-2 factorial design, we randomly assigned 12,705 participants at intermediate risk who did not have cardiovascular disease to rosuvastatin (10 mg per day) or placebo and to candesartan (16 mg per day) plus hydrochlorothiazide (12.5 mg per day) or placebo. In the analyses reported here, we compared the 3180 participants assigned to combined therapy (with rosuvastatin and the two antihypertensive agents) with the 3168 participants assigned to dual placebo. The first coprimary outcome was the composite of death from cardiovascular causes, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke, and the second coprimary outcome additionally included heart failure, cardiac arrest, or revascularization. The median follow-up was 5.6 years.

    RESULTS The decrease in the LDL cholesterol level was 33.7 mg per deciliter (0.87 mmol per liter) greater in the combined-therapy group than in the dual-placebo group, and the decrease in systolic blood pressure was 6.2 mm Hg greater with combined therapy than with dual placebo. The first coprimary outcome occurred in 113 participants (3.6%) in the combined-therapy group and in 157 (5.0%) in the dual-placebo group (hazard ratio, 0.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.56 to 0.90; P=0.005). The second coprimary outcome occurred in 136 participants (4.3%) and 187 participants (5.9%), respectively (hazard ratio, 0.72; 95% CI, 0.57 to 0.89; P=0.003). Muscle weakness and dizziness were more common in the combined-therapy group than in the dual-placebo group, but the overall rate of discontinuation of the trial regimen was similar in the two groups.

    CONCLUSIONS The combination of rosuvastatin (10 mg per day), candesartan (16 mg per day), and hydrochlorothiazide (12.5 mg per day) was associated with a significantly lower rate of cardiovascular events than dual placebo among persons at intermediate risk who did not have cardiovascular disease.     BACKGROUND: The combined use of anticoagulants, antiplatelet agents, and invasive coronary procedures reduces ischemic coronary events but also increases bleeding in patients with acute coronary syndromes. We therefore assessed whether fondaparinux would preserve the anti-ischemic benefits of enoxaparin while reducing bleeding. METHODS: We randomly assigned 20,078 patients with acute coronary syndromes to receive either fondaparinux (2.5 mg daily) or enoxaparin (1 mg per kilogram of body weight twice daily) for a mean of six days and evaluated death, myocardial infarction, or refractory ischemia at nine days (the primary outcome); major bleeding; and their combination. Patients were followed for up to six months. RESULTS: The number of patients with primary-outcome events was similar in the two groups (579 with fondaparinux [5.8 percent] vs. 573 with enoxaparin [5.7 percent]; hazard ratio in the fondaparinux group, 1.01; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.90 to 1.13), satisfying the noninferiority criteria. The number of events meeting this combined outcome showed a nonsignificant trend toward a lower value in the fondaparinux group at 30 days (805 vs. 864, P=0.13) and at the end of the study (1222 vs. 1308, P=0.06). The rate of major bleeding at nine days was markedly lower with fondaparinux than with enoxaparin (217 events [2.2 percent] vs. 412 events [4.1 percent]; hazard ratio, 0.52; P<0.001). The composite of the primary outcome and major bleeding at nine days favored fondaparinux (737 events [7.3 percent] vs. 905 events [9.0 percent]; hazard ratio, 0.81; P<0.001). Fondaparinux was associated with a significantly reduced number of deaths at 30 days (295 vs. 352, P=0.02) and at 180 days (574 vs. 638, P=0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Fondaparinux is similar to enoxaparin in reducing the risk of ischemic events at nine days, but it substantially reduces major bleeding and improves long term mortality and morbidity.     CONTEXT: Despite many therapeutic advances, mortality in patients with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) remains high. The role of additional antithrombotic agents is unclear, especially among patients not receiving reperfusion therapy. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of fondaparinux, a factor Xa inhibitor, when initiated early and given for up to 8 days vs usual care (placebo in those in whom unfractionated heparin [UFH] is not indicated [stratum 1] or unfractionated heparin for up to 48 hours followed by placebo for up to 8 days [stratum 2]) in patients with STEMI. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Randomized double-blind comparison of fondaparinux 2.5 mg once daily or control for up to 8 days in 12,092 patients with STEMI from 447 hospitals in 41 countries (September 2003-January 2006). From day 3 through day 9, all patients received either fondaparinux or placebo according to the original randomized assignment. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Composite of death or reinfarction at 30 days (primary) with secondary assessments at 9 days and at final follow-up (3 or 6 months). RESULTS: Death or reinfarction at 30 days was significantly reduced from 677 (11.2%) of 6056 patients in the control group to 585 (9.7%) of 6036 patients in the fondaparinux group (hazard ratio [HR], 0.86; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.77-0.96; P = .008); absolute risk reduction, 1.5%; 95% CI, 0.4%-2.6%). These benefits were observed at 9 days (537 [8.9%] placebo vs 444 [7.4%] fondaparinux; HR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.73-0.94; P = .003, and at study end (857 [14.8%] placebo vs 756 [13.4%] fondaparinux; HR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.79-0.97; P = .008). Mortality was significantly reduced throughout the study. There was no heterogeneity of the effects of fondaparinux in the 2 strata by planned heparin use. However, there was no benefit in those undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention. In other patients in stratum 2, fondaparinux was superior to unfractionated heparin in preventing death or reinfarction at 30 days (HR, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.66-1.02; P = .08) and at study end (HR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.64-0.93; P = .008). Significant benefits were observed in those receiving thrombolytic therapy (HR, 0.79; P = .003) and those not receiving any reperfusion therapy (HR, 0.80; P = .03). There was a tendency to fewer severe bleeds (79 for placebo vs 61 for fondaparinux; P = .13), with significantly fewer cardiac tamponade (48 vs 28; P = .02) with fondaparinux at 9 days. CONCLUSION: In patients with STEMI, particularly those not undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention, fondaparinux significantly reduces mortality and reinfarction without increasing bleeding and strokes.     Det är numera vanligt att skolor upprättar åtgärdsprogram för elever i behov av särskilt stöd då

    kravet på att utarbeta ett sådant program omfattar alla skolformer utom förskoleklassen (Skolverket

    2003). Denna studie strävar efter att med hjälp av enkäter försöka ta reda på hur åtgärdsprogram tas

    fram, vad de innehåller, hur de används samt vilka inställningar lärare har till dem. Undersökningen

    genomfördes både på friskolor och kommunala skolor och urvalet bestod av samtliga lärare i skolår

    F-9. Enkäten delades ut till lärare som är delaktiga i eller har erfarenhet av arbete med

    åtgärdsprogram. Totalt fördelades 100 enkäter på fem olika grundskolor och 72 personer besvarade

    enkäten. Undersökningens resultat visar att det mestadels är klasslärare och mentorer som tar

    initiativet till och aktivt deltar i upprättandet av åtgärdsprogram och att elever och föräldrar har

    Bakgrund: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) är en ätstörning som kännetecknas av upprätthållandet av en signifikant låg kroppsvikt. AN är av de allvarligaste psykiska störningarna som kan drabba en människa, med högre mortalitet än andra psykiska störningar. Störningen orsakar stort lidande hos den drabbade.

    Syfte: Syftet med denna litteraturstudie var att undersöka patienters upplevelser av att leva med AN.

    Metod: Författaren gjorde en litteraturöversikt i enlighet med Fridberg (2017). Tio kvalitativa vetenskapliga artiklar analyserades. Artiklarna hämtades från CINAHL complete, PsycINFO och Nursing & Allied Health Database.

    Resultat: Resultatet genererade tre huvudteman med tolv underteman. Det första huvudtemat var livslidande med fyran underteman: nedstämdhet och att vara ledsen, svårigheter att identifiera och uttrycka känslor, dömd, avvisad och påverkad av omgivningen och starka känslomässiga reaktioner. Det andra huvudtemat var sjukdomslidande med fyra underteman: kroppsuppfattning, att vara isolerad, att vara fånge i sin egen sjukdom - den anorektiska sjukdomsrösten och rädsla för att inte vara anorektisk längre. Det tredje och sista huvudtemat är vårdlidande med fyra underteman: dålig emotionell respons hos sjukvårdspersonal, otillräcklig kunskap om Anorexia Nervosa hos sjukvårdspersonalen, kontrollerande sjukvårdspersonal och behov av förutsägbarhet och delaktighet.

    Diskussion: Författaren har valt att resonera kring vårdlidande eftersom det är ett av sjuksköterskans ansvarsområden att förhindra och eliminera vårdlidande. För att förhindra vårdlidande hos patienter krävs det att sjuksköterskan är empatisk, har adekvat kunskap om patientens tillstånd, gör patienten delaktig i sin egen vård samt främjar självbestämmande.

    Using panel data from 1960-2000 for 28 countries, this paper explores the relationship between inequality and economic growth.To mitigate the problem of endogeneity, dynamic panel data estimation technique such as difference GMM was used. Estimated results showed positive significant relationship in short to medium term between income inequality and economic growth. The results are robust to sensitivity analysis when the estimation was carried out by running the regression on sub samples to check if the sample selection influnces the results. The results obtained in this study oppose the common belief that growthwill increase by bringing down inequality.

    Polymer-based composites are of high interest in the field of thermoelectric (TE) materials because of their properties: abundance, low thermal conductivity, and nontoxicity. In applications, like TE for wearable energy harvesting, where low operating temperatures are required, polymer composites demonstrate compatible with the targeted specifications. The main challenge is reaching high TE efficiency. Fillers and chemical treatments can be used to enhance TE performance of the polymer matrix. The combined application of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes forest (VA-CNTF) is demonstrated as fillers and chemical post-treatment to obtain high-efficiency TE composites, by dispersing VA-CNTF into a poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate matrix. The VA-CNTF keeps the functional properties even in flexible substrates. The morphology, structure, composition, and functional features of the composites are thoroughly investigated. A dramatic increase of power factor is observed at the lowest operating temperature difference ever reported. The highest Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity are 58.7 μV K-1 and 1131 S cm-1, respectively. The highest power factor after treatment is twice as high in untreated samples. The results demonstrate the potential for the combined application of VA-CNTF and chemical post-treatment, in boosting the TE properties of composite polymers toward the development of high efficiency, low-temperature, flexible TEs.

    Abstract [en]

    Thermoelectric (TE) materials are highly important due to their ability to convert wasted heat energy into electricity. Among the different TE materials, organic-based or polymer-based TE systems are among the most promising due to their sustainability, non-toxicity and good electrical properties. In our research, we have investigated for the first time the application of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes forest (VA-CNTF) as a filler for TE composite; compared to unconnected carbon nanotubes (CNT), which are typically used in polymer/CNT composites, dry pulled VA-CNTF sheets have more ordered structure, which is supposed to improve the TE efficiency of the material. VA-CNTF and short unoriented multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were used as fillers of a polymeric matrix, to prepare TE composites. Various stacking configurations were explored by using CNTF. All the samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), micro-Raman spectroscopy, and four-point probe electrical measurements; MWCNT-based samples were used as benchmarking systems.

    The results revealed a dramatic increase of the Seebeck coefficient up to 46 μV/K for the VA-CNTF-based sample, while the best MWCNTs-based sample (MWCNT concentration 50 wt%) provided only 21.49, which is roughly the Seebeck coefficient of pure polymer. This research represents the first application of VA-CNTF as a promising material for TE systems and demonstrates that oriented nanoforests and related CNT sheets are a very perspective material for promising developments in the field.

        Testing is an important part of software development. It ensures that the developed product is of high standard and quality. Tieto frequently develops large complex systems which require comprehensive testing. Testing employs manually designed test cases. According to recent development within software testing it has been shown that design of test cases can be simplified with domain specific test languages (DSTL).

        The thesis project is a research and development study in the field of software testing and has been performed at Tieto office in Karlstad. The project concerns the development of a DSTL and a suitable development environment based on the Eclipse Platform. The project evaluates the development of a domain specific test language using the tools Eclipse JDT, developed by Eclipse Foundation, and Xtext, developed by itemis AG. The experiment was evaluated by its functionality and integrability.

        The project has shown promise in using a domain specific test language with a suitable development environment. The result and evaluation have shown that the subject shows promise, but needs further development if it is to be adapted within Tieto´s organization.

    In this thesis, we mainly investigate the influence of using unsupervised morphological segmentation as features on the dependency parsing of morphologically rich languages such as Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian, Turkish, Uyghur, and Kazakh. Studying the morphology of these languages is of great importance for the dependency parsing of morphologically rich languages since dependency relations in a sentence of these languages mostly rely on morphemes rather than word order. In order to investigate our research questions, we have conducted a large number of parsing experiments both on MaltParser and UDPipe. We have generated the supervised morphology and the predicted POS tags from UDPipe, and obtained the unsupervised morphological segmentation from Morfessor, and have converted the unsupervised morphological segmentation into features and added them to the UD treebanks of each language. We have also investigated the different ways of converting the unsupervised segmentation into features and studied the result of each method. We have reported the Labeled Attachment Score (LAS) for all of our experimental results.

    The main finding of this study is that dependency parsing of some languages can be improved simply by providing unsupervised morphology during parsing if there is no manually annotated or supervised morphology available for such languages. After adding unsupervised morphological information with predicted POS tags, we get improvement of 4.9%, 6.0%, 8.7%, 3.3%, 3.7%, and 12.0% on the test set of Turkish, Uyghur, Kazakh, Finnish, Estonian, and Hungarian respectively on MaltParser, and the parsing accuracies have been improved by 2.7%, 4.1%, 8.2%, 2.4%, 1.6%, and 2.6% on the test set of Turkish, Uyghur, Kazakh, Finnish, Estonian, and Hungarian respectively on UDPipe when comparing the results from the models which do not use any morphological information during parsing.

    Background: Analysis of metagenomic sequences has become the principal approach for the study of the diversity of viruses. Many recent, extensive metagenomic studies on several classes of viruses have dramatically expanded the visible part of the virosphere, showing that previously undetected viruses, or those that have been considered rare, actually are important components of the global virome.

    Results: We investigated the provenance of viruses related to tail-less bacteriophages of the family Tectiviridae by searching genomic and metagenomics sequence databases for distant homologs of the tectivirus-like Double JellyRoll major capsid proteins (DJR MCP). These searches resulted in the identification of numerous genomes of viruslike elements that are similar in size to tectiviruses (10-15 kilobases) and have diverse gene compositions. By comparison of the gene repertoires, the DJR MCP-encoding genomes were classified into 6 distinct groups that can be predicted to differ in reproduction strategies and host ranges. Only the DJR MCP gene that is present by design is shared by all these genomes, and most also encode a predicted DNA-packaging ATPase; the rest of the genes are present only in subgroups of this unexpectedly diverse collection of DJR MCP-encoding genomes. Only a minority encode a DNA polymerase which is a hallmark of the family Tectiviridae and the putative family "Autolykiviridae". Notably, one of the identified putative DJR MCP viruses encodes a homolog of Cas1 endonuclease, the integrase involved in CRISPR-Cas adaptation and integration of transposon-like elements called casposons. This is the first detected occurrence of Cas1 in a virus. Many of the identified elements are individual contigs flanked by inverted or direct repeats and appear to represent complete, extrachromosomal viral genomes, whereas others are flanked by bacterial genes and thus can be considered as proviruses. These contigs come from metagenomes of widely different environments, some dominated by archaea and others by bacteria, suggesting that collectively, the DJR MCP-encoding elements have a broad host range among prokaryotes.

    Conclusions: The findings reported here greatly expand the known host range of (putative) viruses of bacteria and archaea that encode a DJR MCP. They also demonstrate the extreme diversity of genome architectures in these viruses that encode no universal proteins other than the capsid protein that was used as the marker for their identification. From a supposedly minor group of bacterial and archaeal viruses, these viruses are emerging as a substantial component of the prokaryotic virome.

    Viscosity and thermal conductivity are key transport properties in the design of plate-fin multi-stream heat exchanger in CO2 cryogenic processes. It is necessary to evaluate the reliabilities of viscosity and thermal conductivity models. In addition, the differences in design of multi-stream heat exchanger by using different property models need to be studied as well. In this paper, viscosity models and thermal conductivity models of CO2 mixtures with non-condensable gas impurities were evaluated separately by comparison with existing experimental data. Recommendations were given on model selections and their impact on the design of plate-finmulti-stream heat exchanger were analyzed.

    The results show that for viscosity, the uncertainty range of Wilke’s model is the smallest with a maximum absolute deviation of 6.1%. This model is therefore recommended to be used. For thermal conductivity, GERG model, with a maximum absolute deviation of 8.7% is preferred. The choice of thermal conductivity model has a noticeabl eimpact on the plate-fin multi-stream heat exchanger design, and the maximum deviation by using different thermal conductivity models is 7.5%

    Saving energy is considered about by much more people nowadays. The energy use of industrial drying occupies a large part of total energy usage. Not only the governments, but also the industry owners are trying to find ways to cut down the usage of energy. The aim of this work is to find suitable technologies for industrial drying of berries which can be energy-efficient at the same time. More specifically, to find suitable dryers for drying aronia berry in Sweden. The research is based on secondary data collected by literature review. Good options for other circumstances like fluidized bed drying, freeze drying and solar drying were not discussed in detail. After the study, a continuous hot air dryer with explosion puffing system and heat pumping system seems to be the best solution for drying aronia berry in Sweden. It is easy to be controlled, cost acceptable (both capital and operational costs), environmental friendly and has high drying rate and high product quality. The extra means for improve drying process such as combined with dielectric or conductive dryer, adding pre-treatment such as osmotic drying were also discussed. Combined dryers can reduce the drying time and osmotic drying can cut the operation cost. Careful experiments shall be done before large amount of investment due to the complexity of dehydration.

    The major objective of present study is to find out the sources which cause higher Work in Process (WIP) in the production line. In which a detailed analysis is performed in the area of inventory, reorder point, Takt time, and Kanban. All the analyses are based on the data obtained from the company’s ERP system and have been used to run some scenarios during the analysis.Lots of problems are responsible to cause higher WIP. But current report only focuses and concentrates in leveling the work load, implementing pull system, suggesting reorder point and Takt time.The current situation is described through Value-stream Map (VSM) and the impact cost matrix is used to show the impact of each problem in the production line in terms of costs. In the analysis chapter, root cause method has been used in order to show the cause and effect of higher WIP. Detailed analyses together with explanations are listed by orders. Therefore, three major suggestions are proposed and the future VSM is plotted to show the effect and change of the suggestions which helps to improve the current situation by eliminating the waste.

    Occupational stress among Thai emergency department nurses: Development and validation of an instrument for measuring stressors in emergency departments2017Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Working at an emergency department has some characteristics, which may generate stress. In this thesis, the stressors for emergency nurses were evaluated and an instrument was developed for measuring their impact. In order to gain a deeper understanding regarding the occupational stress among emergency nurses, a descriptive qualitative design with semi-structured interviews were used in two studies (I, II), one at a private and the other at a public hospital in Thailand. Three main categories of stressors were identified, related to the activity at the emergency departments, to human factors and to perceived consequences of these factors. Nurses in both private and public hospitals frequently experienced occupational stress, which influenced their psychophysiological health, and resulted in incomplete nursing care. Since no validated instrument had been published for measuring stressors in emergency nurses’ workplace, a scoping literature review was performed and a questionnaire for this purpose was developed, based on the review and the results from the interviews (I and II). The questionnaire was validated (III) and the influence of socio-economic factors were evaluated (IV). Four-hundred and five emergency nurses in Thailand completed a questionnaire containing 59 items. The responses were analyzed using 1) item generation, 2) content and face validity and test-retest reliability and 3) evaluation of the internal consistency and construct validity of the instrument. An exploratory factor analysis was performed on 200 of these responses and a confirmatory factor analysis on the remaining 205. The analysis provided a final four-factor solution with 25 items distributed among the factors Life and death situations, Patients’ and families’ actions and reactions, Technical and formal support, and Conflicts. The statistical evaluation (Cronbach’s alpha and intra-class correlation coefficient) indicated good homogeneity and stability. The type of organization, educational level and average income were associated with stressor related to Life and Death situations. Stressor related to Patients’ and families’ actions and reactions was predicted by educational level. While sociodemographic variables had no influence on stressor related to Technical and formal support and Conflicts. Future research regarding patient safety should focus on both emergency nurses’ and patients’ perspectives regarding consequences of occupational stress related to patient safety. Different perspectives may create a knowledge-base which can be used to develop guidelines or protocols aiming at reducing nurses’ stress and prevent its consequence, such as poor patient safety.

    Introduction: Emergency department nurses are exposed to specific stressors and report higher stress levels than nurses in other hospital departments. This study aimed to develop and test the psychometric properties of a questionnaire-based instrument for identifying stressors for emergency department nurses. Methods: The instrument's content and face validities were examined by five experts and nurses in emergency nursing field. The test-retest reliability was examined on 30 emergency department nurses. The construct validity, including an exploratory and a confirmatory factor analysis, was tested on 405 emergency department nurses. Cronbach's alpha values and intra-class coefficients were calculated. Results: The instrument's content and face validities were satisfactory. The exploratory factor analysis provided a five-factor solution, whereas the confirmatory factor analysis provided a final four-factor solution with 25 items distributed among the factors Life and death situations, Patients' and families' actions and reactions, Technical and formal support, and Conflicts. The Cronbach's alpha values ranged from 0.89 to 0.93 per factor, and the intra-class correlation coefficient was 0.89, indicating good homogeneity and stability. Conclusions: The instrument's content, face, and construct validities were satisfactory, and the internal consistency and test-retest reliability were good. This instrument can be useful in the management of emergency departments.

    Abstract [en]

    Around the globe the number of older adults is increasing as the life expectancy tends to be longer. Although many nursing programs provide education related to caring for older adults, the connection to and utilization of gerontological knowledge within nursing is vague and still not well understood. The Double Degree Bilingual Nursing Program (DDBNP) is a collaboration between two universities, one in Thailand and one in Sweden, where the nursing students from the Thai University, study their fourth and final year of the program at the university in Sweden. Some of these DDBNP students may become the future leaders of health care in Thailand. While in Sweden, the DDBNP students study a course in gerontology and the fundamentals of nursing care for older adults together with other international students. Within the gerontology course, lecturers/doctoral students in nursing from the Thai University were invited to participate as co-teachers in the course, thus the Eastern and Western cultural views on aging as well as on pedagogy were combined. The first batch of students attending DDBNP have graduated and have now been working as registered nurses (RNs) for more than a year. By interviewing these RNs from the DDBNP, we will be able to explore their utilization of the gerontological knowledge that they gained from the course, and see how they are applying this knowledge in their work as nurses. The study thus aims to explore the Double Degree nurses’ experiences with implementing gerontological knowledge within nursing care. Research designs: A narrative qualitative inquiry will be applied in this study. This inquiry is able to explore what the gerontology course have meant to the nursing students and how have they had use of the gerontological knowledge in their nursing careers. Data collection:In-depth interviews will be performed with 10 general nurses in Thailand. The participants graduated from the Double Degree Bilingual Nursing Program and had participated in a gerontology course at a Swedish university. Data analysis:Transcribed interviews will be analyzed using content analysis.

    Objective 1: After attending this activity, participants will be able to discuss how gerontological knowledge is being utilized by the Double Degree Bilingual Nursing Program graduates within their work in general nursing environments.

    Objective 2: The participants will also be able to discuss and share experiences about challenges and opportunities implementing gerontological knowledge within nursing care.

    BACKGROUND: Occupational stress has been a health-related issue among nurses for many decades. Emergency department nurses are frequently confronted with occupational stress in their workplace; in particular, they encounter stressful situations and unpredictable events. These encounters could make them feel more stressed than nurses in other departments. Research considering occupational stress from the perspective of Thai emergency department nurses is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore nurses' perceptions of occupational stress in an emergency department. METHODS: A qualitative approach was used to gain an understanding of nurses' experiences and perceptions regarding stress in their workplace. Semi-structured interviews were used for data collection. Twenty-one emergency department nurses working in a public hospital in Thailand were interviewed, and the data were analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS: The findings comprised three themes: (1) perceived stress, (2) consequences of stress, and (3) stress management. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study can be used by hospital management to help them adopt effective strategies, such as support programs involving co-workers/supervisors, to decrease occupational stress among emergency department nurses. Future research that explores each of the themes found in this study could offer a more comprehensive understanding of nurses' occupational stress in the emergency department.

    Abstract [en]

    Absorption cooling system driven by district heating network is relized as a smart strategy in Sweden. During summer time when the heating demand is low, the excessive hot water can be directly sold to drive absorption chillers instead of decreasing its production. In addition, this is also one answer to satisfy the cooling demand in more environmentally way since currently only around 26% of cooling demand in Sweden is satisfied by district cooling, the rest is fulfilled by individual air conditioning. Realizing this potential, the purpose of this study is to examine the returning hot water temperature in the district heating network with supply temperature of 70°C and also the effect to the absorption chiller’s COP. Through the simulation result, it is found out that the lowest possible returning water temperature is 55 °C at COP 0,69 with heat rejection (re-cooling) temperature water at 22 °C. This implies that the desired returning hot water temperature of 47 °C cannot be achieved. The lower returning hot water temperature is preferable since it gives the district heating network benefit in term of less distribution pump work, and energy recovery for the condensation process at central heating plant.

    This work concerns a study on the effects of fiber types and content of cellulose nanofiber on mechanical, thermal, and optical properties polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composites. Two different types of cellulose nanofibers, which are nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and bacterial cellulose (BC), were prepared under various mechanical treatment times and then incorporated into the PVA prior to the fabrication of composite films. It was found that tensile modulus of the PVA film increased with nanofibers content at the expense of its percentage elongation value. DSC thermograms indicate that percentage crystallinity of PVA increased after adding 2-4 wt% of the fibers. This contributed to the better mechanical properties of the composites. Tensile toughness values of the PVA/BC nanocomposite films were also superior to those of the PVA/NFC system containing the same fiber loading. SEM images of the composite films reveal that tensile fractured surface of PVA/BC experienced more ductile deformation than the PVA/NFC analogue. The above discrepancies were discussed in the light of differences between the two types of fibers in terms of diameter and their intrinsic properties. Lastly, percentage total visible light transmittance values of the PVA composite films were greater than 90%, regardless of the fiber type and content.

    Abstract [en]

    Solar cell encapsulating film based on ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) was modified by using bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibres. Bacterial cellulose was chemically modified with propionic anhydride prior to compounding with EVA in a twin screw extruder. The effects of fibre content on the mechanical, thermal, optical and barrier properties of the EVA composite films were investigated. Better mechanical and barrier properties of the EVA films were obtained when the modified BC nanofibres were used. The results were ascribed to the different chemical functional groups on the fibre surface, as verified by FTIR spectra. Deacetylation of the EVA was delayed and visible light transparency of the EVA films above 75% was retained. Overall, our study showed that it was possible to improve the barrier properties of EVA film without sacrificing much transparency by using a suitable type and content of cellulose nanofibres.

    This research work aims to investigate the effects of types and concentration of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) prepared from bacterial cellulose (BC) and nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) on structure properties of polyurethane (PU) composites. Feasibility of applying the polymer composite for encapsulation of dye sensitized solar cells was of interest. Both CNCs were pretreated via esterification before mixing with the polyurethane by a solution process. Tensile strength and thermal stability of the PU/esterified CNCs were found to be superior to those of the systems reinforced with untreated CNCs. With the introduction of both untreated and esterified CNCs, water vapor transmission rates through the PU composite films were lowered while their visible light transmittance values were maintained to be above 80%. Also, better efficiency and stability of the solar cell were obtained when the PU was reinforced with CNCs, indicating its longer lifetime usage. The most suitable cell, described in terms of durability, was obtained when the PU was mixed with 2 wt % of esterified CNCs obtained from BC. Overall, this study shows that the surface modification of the CNCs is an important factor, affecting the reinforcing efficacy.
