    Abstract [sv]

Clinical Utility of the Worker Role Interview - A Survey Study among Swedish Users2015In: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy, ISSN 1103-8128, E-ISSN 1651-2014, Vol. 22, no 6, p. 417-423Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Work ability assessments are used to guide interventions designed to reduce or eliminate work disability and facilitate work participation. The clinical utility of assessments concerns the extent to which the assessment results support clinical decision-making. Aim: The aim was to investigate how users perceive the clinical utility of the Swedish version of the Worker Role Interview (WRI-S). An additional aim was to investigate differences in clinical utility related to the users’ level of WRI-S experience, attendance at courses on WRI-S application, and knowledge of the Model of Human Occupation. Material and methods: Data are based on 187 respondents’ answers to a web-based questionnaire and analysed through descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: In total, the respondents performed 12 000 WRI-S assessments. The respondents were mainly satisfied with the clinical utility of the WRI-S and experienced the assessment as supporting clinical practice. The main hindrance affecting clinical utility was the amount of time needed for conducting a WRI-S assessment. Experienced users and users with very good knowledge of MOHO conduct WRI-S assessments in a more time-effective manner. Conclusion: This study contributes to further development of the clinical utility of the Swedish version of the WRI-S, mainly focusing on time consumption.

Which students need accommodations the most, and to what extent are their needs met by regular upper secondary school? A cross-sectional study among students with special educational needs2019In: European Journal of Special Needs Education, ISSN 0885-6257, E-ISSN 1469-591X, Vol. 34, no 3, p. 327-341Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was twofold: (1) to identify factors associated with a high level of accommodation needs in school activities among students with special educational needs (SEN) in regular upper secondary education; and (2) to investigate the extent to which schools have met students’perceived accommodation needs. Accommodation needs and their provision in school activ- ities were assessed with the School Setting Interview for 484 students with SEN. Students’mean age was 17.3 years and 50% did not have a diagnosis. A logistic regression analysis revealed that a high level of school absence, studying a vocational pro- gramme, and a neuropsychiatric disorder were associated with a high level of accommodation needs. In the majority of school activities, about 50% of students had not received any accommo- dation despite an experienced need for support. About 30% of students perceived a need for support even though they had been provided with accommodations, and around 25% stated they were satisfied with received accommodations. Regular upper secondary school students with SEN are insufficiently provided with accom- modations to satisfactorily participate in education. Specific stu- dent characteristics, e.g. high level of school absence, should receive special attention when investigating and accommodating students’needs for support in school activities.

Validity of the school setting interview for students with special educational needs in regular high school - a Rasch analysis2018In: Health and Quality of Life Outcomes, ISSN 1477-7525, E-ISSN 1477-7525, Vol. 16, article id 12Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Participation in education is a vital component of adolescents everyday life and a determinant of health and future opportunities in adult life. The School Setting Interview (SSI) is an instrument which assesses student-environment fit and reflects the potential needs for adjustments to enhance students participation in school activities. The aim of the study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the SSI for students with special educational needs in regular high school. Methods: A sample of 509 students with special educational needs was assessed with the SSI. The polytomous unrestricted Rasch model was used to analyze the psychometric properties of the SSI regarding targeting, model fit, differential item functioning (DIF), response category functioning and unidimensionality. Results: The SSI generally confirmed fit to assumptions of the Rasch model. Reliability was acceptable (0.73) and the SSI scale was able to separate students into three different levels of student-environment fit. DIF among gender was detected in item "Remember things" and in item "Homework" DIF was detected among students with or without diagnosis. All items had disordered thresholds. The SSI demonstrated unidimensionality and no response dependence was present among items. Conclusion: The results suggest that the SSI is valid for use among students with special educational needs in order to provide and evaluate environmental adjustments. However, the items with the detected DIF and the SSI rating scale with its disordered thresholds needs to be further scrutinized.

Optimization of PCR Sensitivity for Detection of Bacterial Species in Blood of Patients with Suspected Sepsis2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sepsis is commonly caused by bacteria, fungi or both present in the blood stream during inflammation. In response, inflammatory cascades are released in multiple organ systems which if prolonged causes sepsis and can eventually lead to organ failure and death. The major diagnostic technique of sepsis is blood culturing. However, the technique is time consuming and lacks sensitivity; especially in patients under antimicrobial therapy. Molecular techniques particularly PCR could possibly become implemented in sepsis diagnostics in the future. The aim of the thesis was to compare the effect on PCR sensitivity by different PCR kits, with optimized PCR conditions to find an ideal Real-time PCR applicable for direct detection of rRNA or rDNA in whole blood, using the 16S rDNA gene. The study also surveyed the overall background flora of bacterial species circulating in the blood. During the optimization Haemophillus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae were added to whole blood, rRNA or rDNA was isolated and extracted and subsequently processed by Real-time PCR. Four commercially available PCR kits were compared. Attempts using rRNA did not significantly increase the PCR sensitivity. LightCycler FastStart DNA Master SYBR Green I kit (Roche Diagnostics) used for rDNA, generated low cp-values, the cleanest sequences and the finest separation between amplification curves. Twenty whole blood and pre-cultured patient samples were processed by the optimized PCR. The effect on PCR sensitivity by pre-culturing patient blood samples was studied and no statistical difference was noted. Increased PCR sensitivity is essential for implementation of PCR techniques in sepsis diagnostics.

Evolutionär algoritm för schemaläggning av kontinuerligt skiftarbete: Schemaläggning med ergonomiska riktlinjer2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Labelling of various macromolecules using positron emitting 76Br and 68Ga: Synthesis and characterisation2001Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Different prosthetic groups containing a trialkylstannyl- and an electrophilic group have been synthesised and labelled with the accelerator produced 76Br (T1/2=16 h) through oxidative bromination. The labelled prosthetic groups were conjugated to amino-containing macromolecules such as proteins and 5´-modified oligonucleotides.

N-Succinimidyl 4-[76Br]bromobenzoate 14 was synthesised in 65 % radio-chemical yield and was conjugated to 5´-hexylamino-modified phosphodiester and phosphorothioate oligonucleotides in 12-19 % isolated radiochemical yield. The stability of the 76Br-oligonucleotide-conjugates in vivo in rats was investigated. No degradation from the 5´-end, resulting in labelled, low molecular weight compounds was detected. Compound 14 has also been used for labelling of different proteins in 23-61% radiochemical yield.

N-Succinimidyl-5-[76Br]bromo-3-pyridinecarboxylate 17 and methyl-4-[76Br]bromo-benzimidate 15 were synthesised from the corresponding trimethylstannyl-compound in 25% and 40 % yield respectively. Compounds 14 and 17 were conjugated to ε-Boc-octreotide in 55 and 50% isolated radiochemical yield respectively after microwave heating. Compound 15 did not react with octreotide under the conditions investigated. The two 76Br-labelled octreotide derivatives showed different lipophilicity and different binding-properties to tissue from meningiomas.

Hyaluronic acid, a polysaccharide, was modified with tyramine and labelled by oxidative bromination using 76Br in 10% radiochemical yield.

The generator produced 68Ga (T1/2=68 min) was used to label octreotide and oligonucleotides modified with the metal chelating group 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclo-dodecane-1,4,7,10-tetraacetic acid (DOTA). 68Ga-DOTA-octreotide was isolated in 65% radiochemical yield and a phosphorothioated 68Ga-DOTA-oligonucleotide was isolated in 35% radio-chemical yield after 30 min synthesis time.

Compound 14 was reacted with 3-aminomethylbenzylamine to give compound 18. The specific radioactivity of 18 was determined to be 36 GBq/µmol by measuring the ratio between the mass-peaks for the 76Br and 79Br-compounds using packed-capillary LC-MS.

    Abstract [en]

A method for labelling the octapeptide octreotide (D-Phe-Cys-Phe-D-TrpLys-Thr-Cys-Thr(ol)) with the positron emitting Br-76 (T-1/2 = 16 h) is presented. epsilon -Boc-protected octreotide was conjugated to N-succinimidyl 4-[Br-76]bromobenzoate 1 and N-succinimidyl 5-[Br-76]bromo-3-pyridinecarboxylate 3 using microwave heating. The conjugates 4 and 5 were isolated in 50-55% radiochemical yield after the removal of the protecting Boc-group. Compound 3 was synthesised from the corresponding trimethylstannyl-precursor in 25% radiochemical yield. The synthesis of methyl-4-[Br-76] bromobenzimidate 8 in 40% radiochemical yield from the precursor methyl -4-trimethylstannylbenzimidate is also described. Experiments were performed to react 8 with Boc-octreotide but no product was obtained. The binding-properties of Br-76-conjugates 4 and 5 to meningiomas were investigated using frozen section autoradiography. Compound 5 showed better binding properties than 4.

    Abstract [sv]

Background: Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a chronic disease which increased in many countries and is rated as a threat to the public health. In order to be able to handle the disease and prevent severe complications or even death, the person affected with diabetes mellitus type 2 should gather knowledge about the disease and take on great responsibility for proper treatment.

Aim: The aim of this study was to describe persons' experience of living with diabetes mellitus type 2.

Method: The method used was a literature study based on qualitative research. The articles were analysed according to Friberg (2017) five step model and resulted in three themes and eight subthemes.

Results: The themes were The importance of culture, Self-management and Participation in care. The theme The importance of culture described how religion and culture could affect the persons' choice of food and the ways they managed their disease under religious celebrations such as Ramadan. The theme Self-management described the obstacles they could face with their disease, such as medication and how they could manage to control it. The theme Participation in care described different obstacles in health care such as language, culture and lack of insight into the disease.

Conclusion: One of the most important parts in self-managing diabetes mellitus type 2 was that the persons should realize they suffered from a chronic disease and that they had to change their lifestyles in order to prevent complications related to the disease.

    Summary

Patients with burn injuries involving more than 20 percent of the total body surface area lose a lot of fluid and are in the risk of developing a severe hypovolemia. Fluid resuscitation is a corner stone in burn care and is important for preventingfurthercomplications. The most common resuscitation formula is the Parkland Formula. Hourly urine output is a measure used to evaluate if the fluid given is sufficient enough to maintain a sustainable tissue perfusion. Inhalation injury, abuse of alcohol and drugs are some of the factors that may increase the amountoffluid needed. The purposefor this study is to study thecompliance to fluid resuscitation guidelines at a burn unit and which factors lead to deviation from the guidelines.

Patient charts for 38 patients with burn injury >20%, > 18 years of age with a length of stay >48 hours, were reviewed regarding size of burn injury, hourly amount of fluid given, hourly urine output and presence of inhalation injury.Statistic significancewas found between the mean values of the differences in percentage between actual and calculated fluid amount for the first 24 hours. The differences in percentage between actual and calculated hourly urine output did not reach statistic significance.

The result shows complianceto the fluid resuscitation guidelines. A larger sample would be required in order to investigate which factors causing deviations from the guidelines.

    Abstract [en]

Unusual mutation patterns in lung tumors among underground miners have been indicated, suggesting radon-specific alterations in the genome, but the data are not consistent. To investigate the association between residential radon exposure and p53 mutations in lung tumors, we performed a study on cases from a nation-wide population-based investigation in Sweden. Our study included 83 nonsmoking lung cancer cases and 250 smoking lung cancer cases, diagnosed 1980-1984, with a time-weighted average radon exposure over 140 Bq/m3 or up to 50 Bq/m3. Radon was measured in dwellings occupied by the study subjects at some time since 1947. Information on smoking habits and other risk factors was obtained from questionnaires. After exclusions because of the initiation of treatment or insufficient material, the p53-status of 243 tumors was determined using PCR-single-stranded conformation polymorphism analysis and sequencing determination of exons 5-8. The overall mutation prevalence was 23.9%. An increased mutation prevalence was suggested among those with high exposure to residential radon [odds ratio (OR), 1.4; 95% CI, 0.7-2.6], especially among nonsmokers (OR, 3.2; 95% CI, 0.7-15.5), but no specific mutational pattern was indicated. Furthermore, the mutation prevalence seemed to be higher among smoking lung cancer cases than among nonsmoking cases (OR, 2.1; 95% CI, 0.9-5.0), and particularly among those smoking less than 10 cigarettes per day. It may be concluded that residential exposure to radon seems to contribute to a higher mutation prevalence of the p53 gene in lung tumors.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

On October 22, 2015, a masked man entered the primary school Kronan in Trollhättan and stabbed three people to death with a knife and a sword. Shortly after the attack the perpetrator was shot to death by the police. The event received a great deal of spatial attention in Swedish media and has been called the worst school attack in Swedish history. The twenty-one-year-old perpetrator had grown up in Trollhättan and it is his origin that is of interest in this study. The aim of this study is to examine how a perpetrator of native origin is portrayed in a Swedish medium. Previous research, which shows that there is a difference between how a perpetrator of native origin is portrayed compared to a foreign one, is used as background. According to these studies media often focuses on the perpetrator’s ethnicity and descent if the person is of foreign origin. Through a qualitative framing analysis we examine how the perpetrator in Trollhättan is portrayed in Sweden’s largest news website, namely aftonbladet.se. We explore how the perpetrator's ethnicity and origin are expressed and which of the perpetrator's characteristics are focused on by Aftonbladet. Through framing analysis we also explore how the perpetrator is portrayed from an us-and-them perspective, and how ideas and concepts are personalized through him. The results of this study show that the male perpetrator who is of native origin in the case Trollhättan is portrayed as a lone maniac who committed an act of evil and that Aftonbladet focused on his personal circumstances, for example that he had issues socializing.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The archipelago of Svalbard just south of the North pole is the unlikely home to the largest collection of seeds in the world, stored in a vault located deep within the mountains. Having seen a great increase in tourism and scientifical research the past years, it is a telling image of the regions future, once a coal mining society at the end of the world.

How can the importance of the vault and its contents be mediated to the public in a tangible and atmospheric fashion? Striving to be in a dialogue with regional architecture of the past, this project proposes a building telling the important story of seed diversity and the Svalbard Seed Vault.

Experimental Design and Optimization of Hydrolysis of Paper for Biogas Production2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The waste production in Sweden and Europe is increasing each year. Swedish households throw away 2.7 million tonnes material annually and because of though waste legislations, most of this is recycled as material or energy. The Swedish goal to increase the amount of biologically treated food waste and also to increase the biogas production requires not only investments but research in this area. Increased biogas yield from anaerobically treated waste materials will be beneficial to reach the goals. About 45 % of the biological waste consists of lignocellulosic material. Lignocellulose is also the most abundant renewable material in the world which makes it very interesting for biogas production. Sweden is also a country were over 10 % of its total export value is generated from the forest industry. An industry which produces large amounts of waste streams. In this thesis work the author investigates how hydrolysis can increase the digestibility of industrial waste paper. The scope was to find an efficient pretreatment method of paper and determine which affecting factors levels are the most successful ones. A literature study was followed by a series of experiments in order to find the optimal parameters for pretreatment of an industrial waste paper with the goal to increase its digestibility for anaerobic biogas production. From the study three pretreatment methods for hydrolysis of paper were chosen and an experimental design was conducted. The methods were hot water, alkali and wet oxidation. The result of the treatment was evaluated by measuring the soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) in the supernatant of each treated samples and then analyse the results using a statistical software program. The highest levels of dissolved organic materials was found in samples treated at 250 °C for 30 minutes and with 2 % additive concentration of NaOH. The result was 42 g/l from a suspension of dry milled paper tubes of 50 g/l. By using the results in an analysis of variance it was possible to determine that sodium hydroxide was the most significant factor for hydrolysation of paper, followed by temperature and then addition of hydrogen peroxide. The results also revealed that there are no interaction effects between the examined factors in any of the tested methods.

Residential Electrostatic Precipitator: Performance at efficient and poor combustion conditions2012Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The performance of a pilot residential electrostatic precipitator R_ESP (Applied Plasma Physics AS), was investigated at laboratory. Measurements of TSP (Total Suspended Particles), content of organic and elemental carbon, and mass size distribution of particles upstream and downstream of ESP were performed. Values for PM1 (particles < 1 µm) were calculated from the particle size distributions. Concentrations and size distributions with respect to particle numbers were measured in separate tests. Gas concentrations, temperatures and boiler parameters were also measured. The TSP concentrations upstream of the R_ESP were varied in range of 15-390 mg/mN3. Up to concentrations of about 300 mg/mN3, the TSP-concentrations out from the ESP were less than 20 mg/mN3, which is well below the German emission limit for wood stoves. The removal efficiencies with respect to mass were about 87% at efficient combustion and 93% at poor combustion. Corresponding values with respect to number concentrations were about 97% at efficient combustion and almost 99% at poor combustion. The better performance at poor combustion may be explained by lower flue gas temperature, leading to longer residence time in the ESP. High removal efficiencies were also found with respect to particulate organic and elemental carbon.

”FRIHET TILL VAD?”: Tankar kring nationell identitet hos tre generationer västberlinare2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The impact of scale when using models of daylight analysis2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study examines the issue of scale regarding models when analyzing daylight, which scale is the most representative of a real space. There have been previous studies done regarding scale model and daylight, however, they do not look at how the scale itself can affect the experience of daylight. The use of the architects’ already built scale model can be seen as valuable for light designers when evaluations and visualizing daylight in a real space. However, the use of the architect's scale model depends on its scale, hence why this study is being conducted. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects the scale has on daylight visualization with scale models.

This study began with conducting a small literature study regarding daylight, scale models, visual perception and practical consideration when using scale models. The method was designed thereafter. By choosing a real room to base the scale models on, three scales were chosen, 1:50, 1:20 and 1:10. Thereafter the questionnaire was designed by using the analyzing method PERCIFAL as a base.

The result of the study showed the subject's answers regarding; light level, shadows, light distribution and specular reflections. As well as a question regarding which scale model the found most representative of the real room and why. The compiled data showed which scale model was the most representative of the real room. The results show a difference between the different scale models and a correlation to the real room is seen. In conclusion, the scale model can be used to estimate and visualize the daylight within a space. However, the scale must be regarded and looked at so the chosen scale can represent the real space, which allows for an easy view of the model.

"Vi behöver göra mer": En diskursanalys av svensk nyhetsrapportering om klimatet under en vårvecka 20192019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The society is changing faster than ever and more and more business is actively seeking help with their organisation. The theory in business management of our time is making man and nature more and more distinct from each other, it celebrates the intellect and logical thinking but forgets about our biological legacy. This paper is arguments for a more natural way of management and compares mankind’s communication with other developed species communication with emphasis on business management. For a durable and long-term development of the society it takes a whole new way of thinking; If everyone is selfish, no one gets anything but if everyone gives everyone gets – to give is to receive.

In order to connect the theory with the reality interviews and an exercise was carried out on a company in Mälardalen. The interviews were analyzed with the aid of concentrating sentences in to categories in order to survey the activity in the corporation. The exercises were carried out as a statement of the positive effect of cooperation and a giving instead of an egoistic way of acting.

This paper is to be seen as a wake up call and inspiration for further research than as a psychological or scientific thesis.

RFID for a higher value in a process flow2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Today, effective flow is of great importance in companies in heavier industries to get the maximum capacity out of their resources. Automating their flows can prove extremely important to get the maximum capacity you capable of. RFID is a smart technology for achieving an automated flow built for the future. Importance of logistics is becoming increasingly important for competitive companies that want to create the greatest possible profitability. More developed processes in flow can be a way for companies to move towards becoming more efficient and competitive. RFID can be a way of working as technology to quickly and efficiently simplify processes while ensuring that information is read managed faster.Purpose: The purpose of the study is to create a broader knowledge of RFID as a technology and its opportunity to create value for and to improve the flow and processes of companies that choose to apply this tool within their business.Method: To achieve the objectives of the study and answer the purpose of this thesis project, observations have been made at a case company and interviews with carefully chosen personnel at the case company were made. This has since been critically reviewed against data collected in the theoretical reference framework. Theory has been critically reviewed in most databases and compared with several sources to ensure credibility. Interviews that belong to the qualitative data collection consist of varying interview questions that are available in the study. This is a general approach the authors have used to achieve the purpose of the study.Result: The result of this study was conducted through the qualitative survey conducted through the case company, where it was founded that the case company is manual in its processes and way of working. Based on data and previous research investigated it has been suggested that a more automated approach would be more optimal and create a higher value for a larger company in heavier industry. Conclusion: The study identifies and detects the challenges that manual a flow and processes have in comparison to more automated flow and processes when it comes to eliminate wastes that arise. RFID is a good and useful technology when it comes to reading different amounts of data in a fast and efficient way.
