Vänta! Vart tog alla idioter vägen?!: En kvantitativ studie av beteendemönster för politiskt åsiktsutbyte hos Facebook-, Twitter- och Reddit-användare2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Social Media Supporting Democratic Dialogue2013Inngår i: Ambiguous Technologies: Philosophical Issues, Practical Solutions, Human Nature, Lisbon: Autónoma University , 2013, s. 36-43Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The term of “social media” appears in newspapers and magazines everyday and the huge number of people use social media actively in daily life. Nowadays, in the highly Information and Communication Technology (ICT) developed country Japan, Japanese people enroll in social media and evolve a new way of communicating with others based on the “virtual” social distance between them. Among social media, Twitter has been focusing on its strong power as the tool for political change recent years. While Twitter has of-expressed problems as well as the “traditional” social media, it is characterized by the limited number of characters, strong propagation and optional reciprocity. Those characteristics stimulate people’s communication online and bring about opportunities for social interaction and democratic dialogue. On the other hand, in the deluge of information, we need to nurture skills to utilize critical and rational way of thinking through dialogue not only between others also between themselves internally. This study explores characteristics of social media and differences between “traditional” social media and Twitter, and how the difference affects people’s information behavior in Japan.

Facebookgrupper och delade dokument: En kvalitativ studie om hur studenter använder sociala medier i sitt skolarbete2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to identify what different types of social media students use and how they actually use these different social medias in their school work.

Social media is nowdays a natural part of our lives and our society. We interact and communicate with people close to us as well as people on the other side of the world. We use social media to seek information, receive news, share our thoughts, our lives and our opinions. Social media has gained a prominent place in our society and beginning to be used more and more in schools and education. The qualities of social media has been said to stimulate learning and in some cases improve efficiency and facilitate school work.

We have chosen to look at how students in higher education are using social media in their studies. The selection group we focused on is the first-year students who take the program Digitala Medie at University West. We selected these students based on our own experience of the program, and we know that these students have a fundamental interest in social media and the use of these.

The results show that Facebook is the social media most used by students, both in their individual work and group work. It is primarily the Facebook function "groups" that is used, where students created two groups for the whole class as well as small groups for each team project. Combined with Facebook groups students use Google docs as a place to collaboratively write texts and presentations. In the individual schoolwork Facebook is primarily used as a communication channel, both with teachers, classmates and team members. The students use the joint groups to contact the teacher by "tagging" them, to get help with problems and answers to questions, to get the support and motivation from classmates and to share essential information.

In group projects, then current Facebook group works as an extension of the project, this is where most communication, decision-making and cooperation takes place. Even though the students indicate flaws and minor problems with both Google drive and Facebook in context with their school work, none of the participants search for new alternatives. The results of our study may be of interest for other students and teachers as it can inspire to new ways to apply social media in education.

In our study, we present a variety of tools and services that students use in their schoolwork. We also present distinct examples of how students use different services and platforms. For teachers, this may be interesting to take note of when it can help them to understand students' needs regarding learning tool. It also provides an insight into how students communicate and interact outside the classroom

Communicating Climate Science: A Matter of Credibility: Swedish Farmers' Perceptions of Climate-Change Information2018Inngår i: The International Journal of Climate Change, ISSN 1835-7156, Vol. 10, nr 1, s. 23-28Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In the climate change communication literature, the concept of framing is increasingly used to discuss various understandings of climate change. This paper addresses the under-researched question of how specific audiences perceive the adequacy of various climate change frames, by exploring how Swedish farmers make sense of climate change information. Based on focus group discussions with farmers, the paper explores what communicators, or frame articulators, Swedish farmers perceive as central and how farmers judge the credibility of potential frame articulators in climate change communication. The paper discusses 1) the credibility of frame articulators as a matter of perceived independence and impartiality, 2) empirical credibility—whether farmers were able to verify the claims underlying climate change frames—as a matter of practical experience versus analytical reasoning, and 3) frame consistency, i.e. whether climate change frames correspond to audience beliefs and claims.

“Do you believe in climate change?” Swedish farmers’ joint construction of climate perceptions2014Manuskript (preprint) (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Climate change has shifted from being regarded as an exclusively physical phenomenon to being a social phenomenon as well, entailing many interpretations and multidimensional frames. This shift calls for an understanding of how various audiences and segments of the public understand climate change. This paper analyses how Swedish farmers perceive climate change and how they jointly shape and construct their understandings. The agricultural sector is of special interest because it both contributes to and is directly affected by climate change impact. Through focus group discussions with Swedish farmers, this study finds that: 1) farmers relate to and understand climate change through their own experience, and 2) climate change is understood either as a natural process subject to little or no human influence or as anthropogenic. The article ends by discussing frame resonance and frame clash in public understandings of climate change, and by comparing potential similarities and differences in how various segments of the public make sense of climate change.

Framings and coverage of climate change in Swedish specialized farming magazines2013Inngår i: Climatic Change, ISSN 0165-0009, E-ISSN 1573-1480, Vol. 117, nr 1-2, s. 197-209Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Climate change is a fundamental challenge for which agriculture is sensitive and   vulnerable. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has identified relevant information as key to enabling appropriate climate adaptation and mitigation action. Information specifically directed to farmers can be found, for example, in specialized farming magazines.

While recent studies examine how national news media frame climate change, less —if any —studies have addressed climate framings and coverage in specialized media. Media framings are storylines that provide meaning by communicating how and why an issue should be seen as a problem, how it should be handled, and who is responsible for it. This paper analyses the framings and coverage of climate change in two Swedish specialized farming magazines from 2000 to 2009. It examines the extent of the climate change coverage, the content of the media items, and the dominant framings underlying their climate change coverage. The study identifies: increased coverage of climate change starting in 2007; frequent coverage of agriculture 's contribution to climate change, climate change impacts on agriculture, and consequences of climate politics for agriculture; and four prominent frames: conflict, scientific certainty, economic burden, and action. The paper concludes that climate change communicators addressing farmers and agricultural extension officers should pay attention to how these frames may be interpreted by different target audiences. Research is needed on how specialized media reports on climate-related issues and how science-based climate information is understood  by different groups of farmers and which other factors influence farmers’ engagement in climate mitigation and adaptation.

‘Collaborative Competition’: Stance-taking and Positioning in the European Parliament2017Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The European Parliament (EP) is the scene where certain issues concerning over 500 million ‘Europeans’ are publicly debated and where politically relevant groupings are discursively coconstructed. While the Members of the Parliament (MEPs) pursue their political agendas, intergroup boundaries are drawn, reinforced, and/or transgressed. Speakers constantly take stances on behalf of groupings in relation to some presupposed other groupings and argue what differentiates ‘Self’ from ‘Others’. This study examines patterns of language use by the MEPs as they engage in the contextually and historically situated dialogical processes of intergroup positioning and stance-taking. It further focuses on the strategic and competitive activities of grouping, grounding, and alignment in order to reveal the dynamic construction of intergroup boundaries.

The study is based on a collection of Blue-card question-answer sequences from the plenary debates held at the EP in 2011, when the Sovereign Debt Crisis had been stabilized to some degree but still evoked plenty of controversy.

Theoretically the study builds on Stance Theory (Du Bois, 2007), Positioning Theory (Davies & Harré, 1990), and several broadly social constructivist approaches to discourse analysis (Fairclough, 1995).

The analysis shows that intergroup positioning in the EP emerges as what I call a ‘collaborative competition’ between contradictory ideologies and political agendas. The MEPs strategically manipulate their opponents' prior or projected utterances in order to set up positions for self, a grouping he or she stands for, and thereby its adversaries. All participants engage in the maintenance and negotiation of intergroup boundaries, even though the boundaries hardly ever coincide between the different speakers. They discursively fence off some imaginary territories, leaving their adversaries with vague positions.

When asking Blue-card questions, the MEPs use a particular turn organization, which involves routine forms of interactional units, namely addressing, question framing and question forms, each of which is shown to contribute to stance-taking. A dynamic model of stance-taking is suggested, allowing for a fluid transformation of the stance object as well as the discursively constructed stance-takers.

While Blue-card questions are meant to serve as a structured procedure for eliciting information from a speaker, the analysis demonstrates that the MEPs accomplish various divergent actions that serve intergroup positioning. The dissertation thus contributes to the understanding of the discursive games played in the EP as the MEPs strive to construct social realities that fit their political ends.

Hjältarna vi ser: Hur barn blir påverkade av media2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Tweets Win Votes: A Persuasive Communication Perspective on Donald Trump’s Twitter Use During the 2016 US Presidential Election Campaign2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Twitter, a microblogging platform, has been increasingly used as a tool for political election campaigns. In an attempt to persuade people to vote for them, candidates and political parties worldwide have begun to incorporate Twitter in their campaigns to disseminate campaign information, promote themselves, and mobilize voters. In the 2016 U.S presidential election, Donald Trump had actively utilized Twitter to promote his campaign and convince voters to support him, which helped him earn a strong presence and huge popularity on Twitter. Eventually Trump even successfully got elected as the 45th US president. Although the rise of Twitter in political campaigns has been studied by researches from different disciplines, there have been very few studies focusing on Donald Trump or his communication performance on social media in the 2016 US presidential campaign. Besides, it is found that there is a lack of studying candidates’ social media use from the perspective of persuasive communication. In order to reveal how Donald Trump was making use of Twitter to influence audiences’ attitudes, this paper will present a content analysis of Donald Trump’s Twitter use from the perspective of persuasive communication. Specifically, the study will investigate the characteristics of messages demonstrated from Donald Trump’s tweets, and examine whether his messages placed an emphasis on certain aspects. The aim of this study is to offer insights into Donald Trump’s Twitter use, particularly about his persuasive communication on Twitter during the political election campaign.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Hacked and leaked content has become a major source of information for the mainstream news, particularly in the years since Donald Trump snatched the official Republican presidential nomination in 2016. This chapter seeks to identify some salient policies and practices the news media have adopted in their coverage of the rise of Trump to power. Indeed, there is a plethora of literature on the role hackers and leakers as well as news fakers play in today’s journalism (Eggen, 2006; Gunkel, 2005; Jaworski, Fitzgerald, & Morris, 2004; Lievrouw, 2011; Roberts, 2012; Son, 2002; Vegh, 2003). We even have a new theory with a set of principles designed to test, interpret, and predict the phenomenon. Called “haktology,” the theory examines the processes of gaining illegal and unauthorized access to information, its subsequent disclosure to reporters and activists, its transmutation into news reports, and the impact such reports leave on public opinion.

Critical Discourse Analysis dwells at length with news stylebooks which mainly advise journalists on how certain words are to be written, policies on confused spelling or transliterating [c.f. Richardson, J. (2007). Analyzing newspapers: An approach from critical discourse analysis. Basingstoke: Palgrave], things with little bearing on issues of ideology, power, and dialogism. And if the ideological effects of the internal guidelines are acknowledged [c.f. van Dijk, T.A. (1988). News analysis: Case studies of international and national newsin the press. Hillsdale: Erlbaum and Cameron, D. (1996). Style policy and style politics: A neglected aspect of the language of the news. Media, Culture and Society, 18(2), 315–333], it is seldom backed by textual or ethnographic evidence. The paper attempts to fill in this gap in the literature by highlighting the role internal guidelines play in structuring and patterning the news discourse. It investigates, textually and ethnographically, the part internal guidelines assume in shaping the Middle East narratives of the BBC and Al-Jazeera English (AJE). In the investigation of their role, the paper relies heavily on interviews, observations and access to large portions of the contents of BBC and AJE's internal guidelines. The paper's ethnographic angle helps illustrate how the two news giants use their organizational power for the sake of disseminating and inculcating their ideology and viewpoints vis-à-vis the Middle East conflict. It shows that the way voices in news are represented is not wholly the work of the reporter in the field. Finally, the paper reveals that news institutions have different ways of interfering in how ideas and viewpoints are to be expressed both socially and discursively and how voices are to be ‘tamed’, with the internal guidelines as their main discursive and social tool.

Mourning on VKontakte: An exploratory study of the process of mourning in the context of national culture and global digitalization2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The digital age has changed the way we live and die. A large variety of social networking services (SNS) have become our everyday context. Profiles on SNS register all important moments of a user’s life. Death, one of the most essential concepts of human existence, is also reflected on SNS in different ways. The digital era offers a wide variety of options for online mourning. The bereaved can create an online memorial, put a candle for the deceased’s soul in a virtual church, or even arrange funerals.

Current research is focused on the role of communication in the process of online mourning on SNS: it examines how members of an online community communicate with a dead user and with each other, how this communication differs before and after death, and how offline death culture corresponds with online mourning rituals. Almost all of the studies on online death culture published so far have referred to the Western mourning tradition and analyzed online mourning in an English-speaking environment. This work suggests that the process of online mourning differs in different cultural contexts, depending on local mentality, culture, and traditions and intended to be the first study on death in an online environment conducted on Russian material (social networking service VKontakte).

Methodologically this study follows a mixed-methods approach. The results from content analysis conducted on the groups of commemoration on VKontakte have shown to whom these groups are dedicated and how members of commemoration groups communicate with the deceased and with each other. Discourse analysis complement the results of content analysis by showing how communication in online communities differs before and after death. The results of the research were discussed in connection to Russian death culture, the meaning of death and dying in Russian society.

The study is relevant on several levels. It is meant as a contribution to a conceptualization of online mourning, which is clearly based on the social and cultural norms and therefore should be examined through the prism of different cultures. It brings together national culture and global digitalization and can be relevant not only for digital death studies but also for understanding contemporary Russian death culture.

    Abstract [en]

Photographs of non-professionals taking pictures are a common feature of contemporary journalism. Drawing on theories of photography as performance and ritual, this article addresses what it means when professionals include these photographing “others” in their images ofnews events. It argues that the image of the amateur, performing photography in the news, shifts and destabilizes journalistic discourse. Using examples from the daily press, the article accounts for these “meta-pictures” as a manifestation of participatory visual culture dating from 9/11, examines specific ways they challenge the authority of the professional andconsiders how they alter the significance of the media event.

Watching Football in the Fan Park: Mediatization, Spectatorship and Fan Identity2014Inngår i: The Ashgate Research Companion to Fan Cultures / [ed] Linda Duits, Koos Zwaan, Stijn Reijnders, Burlington VT: Ashgate, 2014, s. 275-288Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The football fan park, originally a surrogate stadium for fans without tickets, has now become a live venue in its own right, and a new arena in the culture of football fandom. In these sites of exceptionally high media density, football fan identities become increasingly flexible and mobile as participants in these venues interact with an increasingly mediatized social environment. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork carried out in FIFA Fan Parks during the 2010 World Cup, we argue that the fan park, as a mediatized space, has become a site where fan identities are constructed in new ways, facilitating a cosmopolitan understanding of football.

    Abstract [en]

How may the practice of photography shift ways of looking at oneself and at one's community? Can creating visual narratives also support reexamining the past, whereby old pictures and other objects gain new significance? This article addresses these questions in a study of several workshops on transmedial storytelling in the town of St. Ana Zegache, Oaxaca, Mexico. We chose photography as the primary medium for the workshops, based on our interest in the visual vernacular and the relative ease of using simple cameras to acquire first-person accounts of everyday experience. We did not anticipate that participants would seize the opportunity to work across media, to include other objects and images, weaving alternative histories into their stories.

We found that telling stories through photographs opened possibilities for some participants to reinterpret experiences of the self in relation to place, community and beliefs. This became ‘empowering’ in the moment when each person presented his or her story, sharing this reinterpretation with other workshop participants, simultaneously re-enacting his or her place within the community. Examples included experiences of migration, familial relations, and their own creative practice.

Old photographs and objects, as repositories of histories and memories, acquired new dimensions when incorporated into contemporary stories.  Participants also reflected on the value of their narratives beyond the immediate community, to people elsewhere who would be interested in the culture of Zegache, and ‘how we live here.’ They saw the digital interface as a network offering the possibility of sharing their stories with an audience from afar. The reflexive power of photography in this context revealed the image as multidimensional, beyond visual representation, encompassing both individual and collective experience.

Outdoor Advertising and Gender Differences: Factors Influencing Perception and Attitudes2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The thesis examines attitudes towards outdoor advertising, with strong emphasis on gender-based differences. The research intends to reveal the most influencing factors, including gender, format, different images and recall. Earlier researchers have argued that females are inclined to rate advertisements more positively than men. Five different, but interconnected studies, one content analysis and four surveys, were implicated in order to measure the responses to advertising. It is further suggested that positive attitude towards outdoor advertising affects the purchase intent. The theme of sexualised advertising is also discussed within this research. After detailed examination of the advertisements in the centre of St. Petersburg it was concluded that females’ rating is considerably more positive compared to males in the situation of high processing opportunity. However, men were more positive when respondents were asked about more general attitudes to outdoor advertising. Recall of advertising was studied within the field settings and showed that women indeed demonstrate better visual memory. Such factors as format, content were proved to have influence on the recall. In addition, different visual preferences were tested within one study. The findings prove that gender differences in perception of outdoor advertising do exist and should be taken into consideration by advertisers in order to raise the effectiveness of advertising campaigns.

Responsiv Webbdesign: En studie av två responsiva gränssnitt2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The market for new devices is expanding, while older devices and browsers still remains. This makes it problematic for designers and developers to know what screen size and device that is used by the visitor. Previously , this has often been handled by creating a separate mobile site , but since we are no longer limited to a few screen sizes , this becomes untenable. The designer / developer then would have to create different web pages for all devices. One popular solution to this is responsive web design, which is based on a flexible and dynamic interface that automatically adapts to the visitor's screen size. Although responsive web design has had a major impact on the web , it is still a new area which is reflected in the lack of research on the subject. The rapid development of the area has also led to that the designers and developers have had to quickly adapt interfaces and techniques as they no longer work for all user situations.

The purpose of our study was to increase the understanding about responsive web design, and how this can be adapted to improve the usability and user experience . We have chosen to evaluate different, responsive interface to find guidelines that can be the basis for future, responsive web pages. Our research question is therefore :

"How can responsive design be optimized for an improved user experience and greater usability?"

The main findings in our study is partly that it is very important that the user perceives the website as consistent and recognize both the design of aesthetic elements and the interface, regardless of platform. We were also able to say that it is important for the designer / developer to prioritize the content and maintain margins and distance even on the smaller screens, allowing users to create a good overview and therefore get a better user experience

    Abstract [sv]

The Cambodian Curse: A field study on the role of journalists in modern Cambodia2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The title enlightens the difficulties of democratic transition that Cambodia experiences post Khmer Rouge. Media in transitional democracies is often described as a forced compromise between what is ideal and what is actually possible. This thesis aims to understand how political agency and technological advances have affected journalistic agency in a transitional democracy. Three research questions were decided upon: How do journalists in Cambodia perceive their role in a democratic transition? What restrictions and limitations do journalistic practices face in Cambodia? And how do journalists in Cambodia perceive the impact of social media on democratic development?

A field study was conducted in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. For ten weeks, eight editors and journalists currently active in Cambodia were interviewed and observed in their working environment. Normative media theory and developmental democracy theory have been used to analyze and understand the material that was generated through a combination of unstructured observations and semi-structured qualitative research interviews.

Important findings were that the complicated structures of transitional democracies make journalists take on different roles, from very collaborative to extremely radical. Their different stand on journalistic practices is a mixture of their own choice and the force of historical, political and social constraints. Political power players treat them differently, which further separates them and has led to a segregated journalistic community. Even though they seem to share the same fundamental ideal of what journalism should be journalists are therefor unlikely to cooperate.

Social media has been a catalyst for change in democratic development in Cambodia. By offering a place for uncensored conversations it has given the opposition access to media. Social media has brought along many new dilemmas though and is probably more beneficial to journalistic development than to democratic development. There is a lack of tolerance of diversity in Cambodia due to the fragile state of democratic transition. Therefor the immediate and unrestricted ways of expression in social media partially works against creating the social capital necessary for consolidation – fully completed democratization.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

In Swedish shops today there are a lot of magazines aimed at teenagers, which fight for young girls’ attention. These teenage-magazines are one of the most important sources for young girls to get information about sex and love-relationships; therefor it’s important how these magazines portray it.

We have examined how the magazine Frida has portrayed sex and love-relationships from 1991 until today. The way sex and love-relationships are portrayed in Frida’s articles affect the young readers in their process of building an identity.

Using a combined rhetoric- and discourse analysis we found that the main focus in Frida is for the reader to have a love-relationship with a guy, instead of a physical sex-relationship. Frida uses all the rhetorical tools to convince their readers that what they are telling them is the right way to think and behave.

    Abstract [en]

This article aims to understand the distinctive mechanisms of digital media use, seen in relation to cultural practices at large. The empirical material is a survey study of university students at the Business Administration, Media and Communication Stud-ies, Political Science and Philosophy departments at Södertörn University, Sweden. The empirical analysis deals with the students’ digital media use and preferences, and how these are related to their broader cultural practices and preferences. Spe-cific attention is paid to the webpages the students mention in the survey, and how these are distributed among the groups. By showing detailed information on these areas, the mechanisms of difference of digital media use are revealed.

    Abstract [en]

Title: From inspectors to guides: how citizen journalism and participatory culture

affect the professional identity of Swedish journalists (Swedish title: Från granskare

    journalisters professionella identitet).

Number of pages: 44 (48 including enclosures).

Authors: Towe Bengtsson and Matilda Källén.

    Tutor: Amelie Hössjer.

Course: Media and Communication Studies C.

    Period: Fall 2011.

University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Informatics and

    Media, Uppsala University.

Purpose/Aim: The goal of this paper was to answer how citizen journalism and

participatory journalism as well as an increasing range of information today have

affected the professional identity and professional lives of journalists. In addition to

this, study how journalists today respond to these changes.

Material/Method: The study is based on Deuze’s theories about journalistic ideals,

Jenkins’ theories about convergence culture, and on theories about professionalization

and de-professionalization based on Nygren, Wiik and Torstendahl’s theories. The

study is based on eight interviews with professional journalists, four employed

journalists and four freelance journalists. The results are analysed based on a broad

    theoretical framework.

Main results: The results of this survey show that the role of the professional

journalist is extremely complex, with a strong ideological basis that fundamentally

influences the journalist's view of the profession and of him- or herself. The survey

shows that the journalist role is changing and how important the identification as a

journalist still is. Furthermore, the survey shows that the role is being redefined. The

role consists of two levels, an ideological level and a more practical level. The survey

shows how these two levels are in harmony, but also on a collision course, and how

journalists seek to clarify their ideology to distinguish themselves from others, but

also how they actually adapt the ideals on a more practical level.

In summary, despite a de-professionalization of the profession, the journalists keep

the journalistic ideals very high, although they constantly redefine their role, as well

as the ideals. They see their role as an aid to guide the readers, rather than a traditional

journalist, although they still cling to a traditional perception of the ideal journalist.

    Abstract [en]

Based on semi-structured interviews with journalists in six European countries, this article examines the extent to which the findings of recent literature about the representation of migrants in European media content are reflected in the perceptions of journalists themselves about the way in which migrants are represented in the media discourses produced by their outlets. It finds that the four key findings of the literature were by and large confirmed, namely inaccurate group labelling and designation, negative or victimised representation, underrepresentation of migrants in quotations, and the scarce reference to a wider European context. Finally, the article discusses media professionals’ self-reported awareness about general professional ethics versus diversity-specific ethics, and about the way in which their outlets cover news involving ‘‘new’’ immigrants, i.e. nationals of non-European Union countries residing in the European Union, and examines the differences between media practices and perceptions in ‘‘old’’ and ‘‘new’’ immigration countries.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how a children's book is suggested to be prepared in order to be accepted for publication by a publishing house in Sweden today.

My questions was first to clarify the concept of a "children's book". Secondly, to understand if there are any guidelines to follow regarding the design and illustration of a children´s book, and how to proceed with the best chances of getting a mauscript published.

To answer the question, I have chosen to use a qualitative method containing questionnaire items involving eleven Swedish publishers of children's literature.

My results show that children's books includes all literature that has an target audience of people between 0-18 years of age. The most important thing is that the book's material is appropriate to the target group's level of mental perceptions and emotional competence. The material which then is submitted to the publisher will need to be of the highest quality and the author must investigate a consistent niche in order to submit the material to a publisher.

Recent instances of global crisis reporting on climate change and the financial crisis are early embryos of a new form of journalism that is increasingly needed in global times: global journalism. Instead of associating global journalism with national comparisons of media systems or defining it as an ethically «corrective» form of journalism, Peter Berglez sets out to develop the idea of global journalism as an epistemological updating of everyday mainstream news media. He theoretically understands and explains global journalism as a concrete practice, which can be applied in research, training, and reporting. He argues that the future of professional news journalism is about leaving behind the dominant national outlook for the sake of a more integrated(global) outlook on society. Emerging examples of global journalism are analyzed throughout the book alongside the historical background and the challenges it faces.

Smileys Without Borders: A Critique of Transboundary Interaction Between Politicians, Journalists and PR practitioners on Social Media2018Inngår i: TripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique, E-ISSN 1726-670X, Vol. 16, nr 1, s. 18-34Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to contribute a critical theoretical understanding of cross-professional relations on social media, focusing on politicians, journalists and PR practitioners. It is well known that these professional groups establish personal and close relations in offline contexts, but more attention needs to be paid to the role of social media. Here, it is argued that in the context of digital media use, semi-private chatting, humour, and mutual acknowledgment, including the use of likes, smileys, heart symbols, etc., are evidence of a ‘neoliberalisation’ of cross-professional relations. The underlying idea is that the common practice of self-branding undermines representations of professional belonging and exacerbates the blurring of professional boundaries. The critical conceptualisation of such ‘transboundary’ interaction between politicians, journalists and PR practitioners, which is guided by a culturalmaterialist approach, includes the presentation of examples deriving from the Swedish Twittersphere, and suggestions for empirical research.

Foreign, domestic, and cultural factors in climate change reporting: Swedish media's coverage of wildfires in three continents2017Inngår i: Environmental Communication: A Journal of Nature and Culture, ISSN 1752-4032, E-ISSN 1752-4040Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines domestic media’s coverage of foreign wildfires from a climate change perspective. It explores Swedish newspapers’ coverage of wildfires in Australia, the Mediterranean region and the USA during a three-year period (February 2013–March 2016), focusing on how and to what extent climate change is viewed as an underlying cause. A central result is that climate change is mentioned far more often in the case of Australian wildfires than of fires in the other two regions. Another finding is that the climate change issue became more prominent after a severe domestic wildfire in 2014. These observations are also examined qualitatively through a combined frame and discourse study where the importance of foreign news values, the use of foreign sources, cultural proximity/distance, and domestication procedures are analyzed. In conclusion, foreign, domestic, and cultural factors in climate change reporting in relation to extreme events are further discussed.
