    Abstract [en]

    Currently there exists a multitude of views of service creating problems for designers and users of models with respect to reasoning, description and classification of services. The diversity of conflicting views and definitions suggest that a multi-perspective approach is required to explicate the notion of service. The purpose of this paper is to introduce an integrated view of the service notion based on a literature survey. Our approach is to start with an analysis of service-as-a-resource and argue that this view will benefit from being complemented with a service-as-a-process view. These views are then integrated and represented in a conceptual model.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – Organizations of today are becoming ever more focused on their business processes. This has resulted in an increasing interest in using best practices for business process re-engineering. Two problems arise in connection to using best practices: how to find a best practice that suits particular purposes, and how to ensure that the process from the best practice has the same nature as the process under re-engineering. The purpose of this paper is to address these issues.

    Design/methodology/approach – The paper suggests using business process patterns, i.e. relatively high level business process models, for making near formal comparison of business processes. The paper analyzes widespread modeling techniques to find out which of them suits the task of building patterns for comparison. Based on this analysis, the state-flow modeling technique is chosen and first steps towards formal definition of business process patterns based on this technique are suggested.

    Findings – A pattern is defined based on the notions of state space, goal, as a surface in the state space, and valid movements towards the goal. A thinkable procedure of constructing patterns is demonstrated on two real-life examples. A hypothetical procedure for comparing process is suggested but it still needs to be verified in practice.

    Originality/value – The originality of the paper is the way the patterns are formulated and the underlying model, the state-flow view of processes, upon which the patterns are founded.

    Abstract [en]

    One of the major factors behind the less successful implementations of computerized knowledge management systems (KMS) is lack of motivation to use such a system on behalf of the end-users. The authors argue that to create such a motivation, i.e., achieve usability, a computerized KMS should be integrated with a business process support (BPS) system and provide three main functionalities: (1) provision of context, (2) automatic gathering of experience-based knowledge, and (3) an active generalized knowledge base. For creating such an integrated KMS/BPS, the authors suggest to use a state-oriented view on business processes. The paper describes a version of a system built according to this view. The system fully implements the first two functionalities, the third one being under development. The system was operationally tested internally, and it is currently installed at a pilot site. Research work in progress includes creating a formal language for representing an active generalized knowledge base, and investigating the impact of the introduction of an integrated KMS/BPS on the pilot organization.

    For knowledge management to be of use in an organization, it should be seamlessly incorporated in everyday business activities. Large parts of an organizations activities, especially on the operational level, are structured around business processes. Therefore, knowledge management needs to be integrated with these processes, which means that a computerized system that supports business processes should also support knowledge management. This paper reports on the experiences of implementing an integrated business process support system and knowledge management system into an organization. The implementation is the subject of a research project. The projects objective is to work out techniques for developing integrated process and knowledge management systems, and investigate effects of introducing such a system in operational practice, e.g., effects on productivity, internal cooperation, and democracy in organizational life.

    Abstract [en]

    The analysis of value, value ascription mechanisms, and their motivating and influencing factors is useful for decision making processes of both customers and providers. In particular, enterprise modeling can greatly benefit from a proper understanding of value-related notions. Nonetheless, existing value models mainly focus on the value exchange between subjects, disregarding the understanding of “what” value is and of “why” something is valuable. In order to exploit the benefits of value analysis, a precise and rigorous conceptualization, based on foundational ontologies, is needed. To this aim, we present and discuss here a preliminary core ontology of value ascription and we discuss the main issues.

    Abstract [en]

    E-services are used as the cornerstones for modelling interaction points of cooperating IT systems, within and between enterprises. So far, research and development of e-services have mainly focused on an operational perspective, such as the development of standards for message exchanges and service coordination. However, on a strategic level, the success of e-services depends on its ability to work as a medium for exchange of business values. In this paper, we present an approach that utilizes goal and business models as the foundation for designing e-services. The approach can be used to ensure that the developed e-services support the desired goals and business values of involved actors. A case st3dy from the Swedish health sector is used to ground and apply the presented approach.

    This paper discusses a follow-up study aimed at investigating the extraction of word relations from a medical parallel corpus in the field of Psychology. Word relations are extracted in order to create a bilingual lexicon for cross lingual question answering between Swedish and English on a medical portal. Six different variants of the corpus were utilized: word inflections with and without POS tagging, syntactically parsed word inflections, lemmas with and without POS tagging, syntactically parsed lemmas. The purpose of the study was to analyze the quality of the word relations obtained from the different versions of the corpus and to understand which version of the corpus was more suitable for extracting a bilingual lexicon in the field of psychology. The word alignments were evaluated with the help of reference data (gold standard) and with measures such as precision and recall.

    Few studies have been performed within cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) in the field of psychology and psychotherapy. The aim of this paper is to to analyze and assess the quality of available query translation methods for CLIR on a health portal for psychology. A test base of 100 user queries, 50 Multi Word Units (WUs) and 50 Single WUs, was used. Swedish was the source language and English the target language. Query translation methods based on machine translation (MT) and dictionary look-up were utilized in order to submit query translations to two search engines: Google Site Search and Quick Ask. Standard IR evaluation measures and a qualitative analysis were utilized to assess the results. The lexicon extracted with word alignment of the portal's parallel corpus provided better statistical results among dictionary look-ups. Google Translate provided more linguistically correct translations overall and also delivered better retrieval results in MT.

    Decisions for IT outsourcing are very complex and needs to be supported by considerations based on many (multiple) criteria. In order to facilitate the use of a specific tool by a decision-maker in IT outsourcing, we need to find out whether such a tool for this purpose will be accepted or rejected or what improvements must be added to this tool to be accepted by some IT decision makers in large companies from Sweden.

    The role and relevance of experimentation in informatics2013Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Informatics is a relatively young field within science and engineering. Its research and development methodologies build on the scientific and design methodologies in the classical areas, often with new elements to it. We take an in-depth look at one of the less well-understood methodologies in informatics, namely experimentation. What does it mean to do experiments in informatics? Does it make sense to ‘import’ traditional principles of experimentation from classical disciplines into the field of computing and information processing? How should experiments be documented? These are some of the questions that are treated. The report argues for the key role of empirical research and experimentation in contemporary Informatics. Many IT systems, large and small, can only be designed sensibly with the help of experiments. We recommend that professionals and students alike are well-educated in the principles of sound experimentation in Informatics. We also recommend that experimentation protocols are used and standardized as part of the experimental method in Informatics.

    The proliferation of mobile communication and computing devices, in particular smart mobile phones, is almost paralleled with the increasing number of mobile device forensics tools in the market. Each mobile forensics tool vendor, on one hand claims to have a tool that is best in terms of performance, while on the other hand each tool vendor seems to be using different standards for testing their tools and thereby defining what support means differently. To overcome this problem, a testing framework based on a series of tests ranging from basic forensics tasks such as file system reconstruction up to more complex ones countering anti-forensic techniques is proposed. The framework, which is an extension of an existing effort done in 2010, prescribes a method to clearly circumscribe the term support into precise levels. It also gives an idea of the standard to be developed and accepted by the forensic community that will make it easier for forensics investigators to quickly select the most appropriate tool for a particular mobile device.

    We elaborate on hierarchical credal sets, which are sets of probability mass functions paired with second-order distributions. A new criterion to make decisions based on these models is proposed. This is achieved by sampling from the set of mass functions and considering the Kullback-Leibler divergence from the weighted center of mass of the set. We evaluate this criterion in a simple classification scenario: the results show performance improvements when compared to a credal classifier where the second-order distribution is not taken into account.

    Web 2.0 has provided organizations remarkable opportunities to improve productivity, gain competitive advantage, and increase participation by engaging crowds to accomplish tasks at scale. However, establishing and integrating crowd-based systems into organizations is still an open question. The systems and the collaborative processes they enable appear diametrically in dissonance with the norms and culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing in traditional organizations. They require mechanisms for articulation of work, coordination, cooperation, and knowledge co-creation that are fundamentally different from those in current groupwork systems and processes. This workshop will bring together researchers investigating issues related to social computing and collaborative technologies, organizational science, crowdsourcing, and workplace research, work in industry, government and voluntary sectors, to discuss the future of groupwork systems in the era of crowdwork. Building on two workshops hosted at ACM CSCW 2014, we will explore questions such as: How does the shift in organizational work from a closed system with known individuals, to an open and crowd model that requires engagement with an undefined network of people, affect how we conceptualize groupwork? What are the implications for the design of groupwork systems? What can the crowdsourcing research community learn from groupwork systems, or conversely what can groupwork researchers learn from crowdsourcing? How do cultures, motivations, ownership and representation fit into these systems? The workshop will advance our understanding of this area, through presentations, discussion, and activities to articulate an agenda for future research.

    To be competitive, the goal for manufacturing companies is to deliver the right products at the right time with good quality. This requires good planning, optimized purchases and well functioning distribution channels. It also requires an efficient information flow in the company. One of the problems in Business Informatics is to coordinate the information flow between the manufacturing company, its customers, and its suppliers. For example, coordinating the information flow needed in a manufacturing company to fulfil their order stock. In the production process, a major issue is the double directed information flows, one from customers to company and another from company to its suppliers. This information can be about orders, requirements and production plans. Information coordination between the actors can speed up the information exchange and, hence, optimize the production cost. However, this requires a technology that can search, combine and deliver the information needed by the manufacturing company. Our approach is to combine theories from Multi Agent Systems (MAS), meta-agents and Information Logistics (IL) in order to coordinate and deliver information at the right time and to the right place at an acceptable cost.

    One-to-one computing has been proposed as one solution for improving primary school education around the world. Ukombozi School is a public primary school in Mkimbizi village, Tanzania, and the school has performed outstandingly on the district, regional, and national levels. Ukombozi school has 100 XO-1 "children’s laptops", and, in collaboration with a local university, the school is using those computers for teaching pupils basic computer literacy. The school, however, has ambitious plans for the computers. This paper analyses the necessary steps for developing the current research and design collaboration into a fully-fledged living lab, which can be used to studying, further developing, and replicating Ukombozi School’s success.

    One of the most debated areas of computer science education is how to arrange programming courses. One of the debates is concerned with the amount of guidance a learning environment should grant to the learner. This research study reports on development and testing of a model where students work on their homework under guidance, facilitated by active student-teacher collaboration, continuous feedback, and student support. While qualitative results, observations, and student feedback about the intervention were exclusively positive, controlled experiment showed no significant advantage over the control group. This paper reports the results of the experiment described above, and suggests ten hypotheses for further research.

    One-to-one computing is an active and widely researched topic in educational technology. Its benefits include, for instance, easily updatable material base, anywhere-anytime learning, adaptability, and simulated experiments in science. The use of one-to-one computing in a developing country context has recently become an active research topic. However, the materialization of the educational benefits requires proper contextualization regarding the necessary pedagogical, organizational, institutional, and other types of adaptation. This paper presents preliminary results from an action research study in a primary school in rural Tanzania. In that study, the utilization of one- to-one computing in a combination with modern pedagogical approaches to teach ICT and health care topics was studied.

    In the past two decades computers have become a standard educational tool in the industrialized countries. Recently, equipping each student with a personal device (one-to-one computing, OLPC) has been enthusiastically advocated for developing countries, too. However, despite a number of pioneering research studies, broader analyses of pedagogical, technical, and organizational aspects of one-to-one computing in developing countries are largely missing. In this participatory action research in a rural Tanzanian primary school, we identified a number of pedagogical elements that were beneficial for teaching and utilizing ICT in the classroom. We pinpointed exploratory and self-regulated learning, group problem solving, and constructive principles as facilitators of learning within the one-to-one computing paradigm in this context. Our results show that the introduction of children's computers also triggered a number of changes in dynamics both within the school but also outside the school.

    It has been shown that deep approaches to learning, intrinsic motivation, and self-regulated learning have strong positive effects on learning. How those pedagogical theories can be integrated in computing curricula is, however, still lacking empirically grounded analyses. This study integrated, in a robotics-based programming class, a method of learning-by-inventing, and studied its qualitative effects on students’ learning through 144 interviews. Five findings were related with learning theories: changes in students’ problem management cycle, problem-rich learning environment, conceptions of the nature of computing, extension of deep and surface approaches to problem solving and management, and the use of robotics to facilitate deep learning strategies. Our analysis suggests that a combination of an open learning environment, robotics as the learning tool, and learning-by-inventing provides a conducive environment for deep learning strategies, intrinsic motivation, and self-regulated learning, which are prerequisite conditions for creativity and inventing.

    Programming education is a widely researched and intensely discussed topic. The literature proposes a broad variety of pedagogical viewpoints, practical approaches, learning theories, motivational vehicles, and other elements of the learning situation. However, little effort has been put on understanding cultural and contextual differences in pedagogy of programming. Pedagogical literature shows that educational design should account for differences in the ways of learning and teaching between industrialized and developing countries. However, the nature and implications of those differences are hitherto unclear. Using group interviews and quantitative surveys, we identified several crucial elements for contextualizing programming education. Our results reveal that students are facing many similar challenges to students in the west: they often lack deep level learning skills and problem-solving skills, which are required for learning computer programming, and, secondly, that from the students’ viewpoint the standard learning environment does not offer enough support for gaining the requisite development. With inadequate support students may resort to surface learning and may adopt extrinsic sources of motivation. Learning is also hindered by many contextually unique factors, such as unfamiliar pedagogical approaches, language problems, and cultural differences. Our analysis suggests that challenges can be minimized by increasing the number of practical exercises, by carefully selecting between guided and minimally guided environments, by rigorously monitoring student progress, and by providing students timely help, repetitive exercises, clear guidelines, and emotional support.

    This paper focuses on understanding and develop- ing learning environments for computer science education. We present two models that we have successfully used in European and African contexts. The first model, Computer Science Learning Environments (CSLE), presents seven dimensions of computer science courses, which should be considered in learning environment design for computer science. The second model, Investigative Learning Environment (ILE), presents an action plan model, inspired by action research, for combining educational research and computer science teaching. In the empirical section we outline two case studies where these models were used to design and implement computer science learning environments in two different learning contexts. In the first case in University of Helsinki, Finland, we developed and studied a method of learning-by-inventing in a robotics programming course. That course was designed around problem discovery and inventing, and it employed LEGO (R) Mindstorms robots. In the second case in Tumaini University, Tanzania, we designed an environment for studying and improving introductory programming courses. Both models showed to be useful for designing, implementing, developing, and analyzing the courses in both learning contexts.

    This study investigates the reliability of three originality check systems from the university teacher's perspective. It also describes a method for evaluating this type of systems. The three systems are examined with respect to the time used for the search, the ability to find plagiarism and the layout of the similarity report. The study was conducted in conjunction with the national procurement of a new national agreement for originality check systems and a Swedish higher education institution choice of a new system. The background is the teachers' use of the originality check system as part of the pedagogical efforts to prevent plagiarism and detect suspected fraud. The study does not discuss the whole plagiarism issue in higher education. Instead it focuses on the method used for the evaluation of and comparison between systems. Over 68,000 words from 167 plagiarized references, from different sources and subject areas were used to test the systems. The results show that systems can find only a portion of the plagiarized texts that were sent in to the systems for control and that there are major differences between the capabilities of the systems. 20, 63 and respectively 84 of the 167 references were indicated as plagiarism. Turnitin conducted searches of up to five minutes while the other two systems sometimes took considerably more time for the analysis. The investigation of the originality reports´ interface revealed that factors the evaluators considered differed between these systems. This disclosed that the reports can be more or less difficult to interpret. We can therefore not solely rely on the originality check system´s reliability. Consequently this leads to the conclusion that other educational activities should be emphasized as a much needed complement in the work of preventing and detecting fraud in the form of plagiarism

    Background Assessment of risk of future violence has developed from reliance on static indicators towards a more dynamic approach. In the latter context, however, the offender is seldom confronted with real life situations. Aims The aim of this study is to evaluate a computer-based system Reactions on Display, which presents human interactions based on real-life situations for its effectiveness in distinguishing between potentially violent offenders with mental disorder and a healthy comparison group. Methods Male offenders with autism spectrum disorders or psychosis were recruited from specialist forensic psychiatric units in Sweden and healthy participants from the local communities. Each consenting participant was presented with film clips of a man in neutral and violent situations, which at critical moments stopped the story to ask him to predict the thoughts, feelings and actions of the actor. Results Offender patients, irrespective of diagnosis, detected fewer emotional reactions in the actor in the non-violent sequence compared with controls. When asked to choose one of four violent actions, the offender patients chose more violent actions than did the controls. They also reported fewer physical reactions in the actors when actors were being violent. There were also some examples of incongruent or deviant responses by some individual patients. Conclusions and implications for practice The use of interactive computer simulation techniques is not only generally acceptable to offender patients, but it also helps to differentiate their current response style to particular circumstances from that of healthy controls in a way that does not rely on their verbal abilities and may tap more effectively into their emotional reactions than standard verbal questions and answer approaches. This may pave the way for Reactions on Display providing a useful complement to traditional risk assessment, and a training route with respect to learning more empathic responding, thus having a role in aiding risk management.

    Information Retrieval (IR) deals with finding and presenting information from a collection of documents/data that are relevant to an information need (a query) expressed by a user. Cross Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) is a subfield of IR where queries are posed in a different language than that of the document collection. Computational linguistic tools and resources are essential to accomplish the tasks in CLIR and to date, CLIR research is dominated by a very limited number of languages for which such tools and resources are available. In order to facilitate global information sharing, it is important to enable access to information using as many languages as possible. This requires an investigation into the feasibility of CLIR for languages with a limited set of computational linguistic resources.

    Amharic is a well-studied language with a rich history and culture, but has very limited computational linguistic tools and resources. This dissertation provides an in depth investigation into a CLIR system for Amharic (against English and French document collections). Scalable techniques were developed to accomplish Amharic CLIR tasks and each task was evaluated individually as a stand alone experiment. Large scale IR experiments were then conducted in order to evaluate the effect of three parameters, namely, transliteration, word sense discrimination, and term selection based on part of speech tags, on the overall IR performance. The effects were measured by individually tuning each of these parameters through a series of benchmarking experiments, geared towards optimizing retrieval precision as well as recall. The results give an insight into the performance of the chosen approaches, the challenges, and their impact on the overall IR performance.

    Abstract [en]

    The question of what constitutes effective flight training and education is complex and can be approached in different ways. The research project "Effective fighter pilot training and education" (2015-2017) has scientifically and methodically worked on integrating pedagogical models and practical experience in flight training, taking into account organizational structures. Furthermore, systematic design work of visual support for debriefings has been conducted. This report integrates project activities, research questions and project results in a coherent description. Additional support (both tools and methods) is needed to analyze complex scenarios and measures that can pinpoint the performance of the pilot or group of pilots. Based on complex measures, two visualizations that provide an overview of the pilot's shooting moment and threat picture have been developed. Both visualizations, Missile launch and Threat range, have been evaluated in conjunction with Swedish air force fighter pilots and are presented in the report. Furthermore, the project have successfully used machine learning to categorize pilots' communication with the aim of assessing efficiency, and to identify any deficiencies through visualizations of the results. Educational models, visualizations, as well as empirical studies of simulator facilities also provide a basis for a discussion of what characterizes efficient simulator facilities and effective simulation training. Studies of the LVC (Live, Virtual & Constructive) concept, which means that training in one and the same scenario is done with real aircraft and pilots, pilots in flight simulators and artificial agents, have been conducted. Additionally, the project has introduced the concept of "LVC in everyday training", a vision of seamless integration of real aircraft and pilots in simulated aircraft. The activities of the project have largely been carried out in cooperation and in relation to the IMTR II (International Mission Training Research II) cooperation agreement with U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). Within the collaboration, the project has contributed to a demonstration of LVC capabilities where FLSC were the only European participant. The project intends to continue this collaboration and focus on LVC to further approach the vision of LVC as an integral part of regular training. The report recommends a future research agenda.

    Project-based education allows students to explore real-world problems and challenges. It can also bemore cost-effective than traditional teaching and individual tutoring. However, projects are sometimes messy, need a long takeoff roll and risk being difficult to monitor by teachers. There is a need to better understand and support students’ creative design processes. We propose the ‘interactionary’ format as providing one way forward to meet these needs. An ‘interactionary’ is a highly time-constrained collaborative design assignment which forces students to complete a design task live on stage (Berkun, 2001). We present findings from three separate case studies in which the format has been tested. The studies involved students of interaction design (Ramberg, Artman, Karlgren, 2013) and chemical engineering (Artman, House, Hultén 2014) as well as multidisciplinary student teams (Artman, House, Hultén, Ramberg, Unpublished).

    Our results show that the interactionary as a didactic format engages students and allows them to explore a messy design space. Furthermore, three phases of the design process were identified in all studies: ideation, sketching and reflection/evaluation. The groups displayed differences in their multimodal approach to design. For example, the engineering students mainly made use of ephemeral communication strategies (gestures and speech) rather than sketching with physical materials, while the two other student groups employed physical materials (clay, lego, paper sketching) to a higher degree. Furthermore, there was a tendency for the design objective to override the specific competences of the participating individuals whereby the design process became a collaborative team effort. Students mainly made use of their everyday knowledge, indicating a need to better address domain knowledge (in interaction design, chemical engineering or other domains respectively). Nevertheless, all thirteen groups in the three studies articulated and produced prototypes and basic use-scenarios within the time-limit which shows that the format engages the students and enables a short project takeoff. There remains, however, the need for research into how teachers can instruct, coach and intervene in the design process as well as in the use of disciplined domain knowledge.
